Atlantis Yacht Club

Atlantis Yacht Club was chartered in 1961, and moved to its present location in 1969, located on the scenic Shrewsbury River in Monmouth Beach, New Jersey. Atlantis Yacht Club is happy to welcome members of accredited yacht clubs, especially reciprocating clubs. Their clubhouse offers excellent facilities, and our grounds include a pool, tennis court, basketball court, and shuffleboard, as well as sitting areas and barbeque grills. The Club is situated two blocks from the beach, and within walking distance of several excellent restaurants and shops. They can accommodate yachts up to 70 feet.

Overall rating

Have been visiting Atlantis for past 4 years as a transient from another yacht club. Has become one of my favorite destinations. Truly a hidden gem. Facility is wonderful. Members & staff are friendly. Beach is about a block away. Taxi to Pier Village (boardwalk area with restaurants & shops) for a family of 4-8 about $15. Only negatives are fixed docks & shoaling.

When entering through Raritan Bay and around the inside of Sandy Hook, follow the main channel through the Highlands of New Jersey.

The Highlands Bridge has a clearance consistent with intracoastal waterway specifications. Proceed south past the branch of the Navesink River to the west towards the Sea Bright bridge. The bridge will need to be opened for boats over 15 feet clearance. The bridge tender can be raised on Ch. 13. After the bridge, continue south and follow the eastern channel, rather than the charted western channel, which tends to shoal. The Atlantis Yacht Club, and the adjacent Channel Club Marina will be obvious after several turns of the channel.

Tradition alive and well at Atlantis Yacht Club

Who knew Monmouth Beach, a relatively quiet Jersey Shore town, was home to such pomp and ceremony?

It was certainly in evidence last Sunday morning when the Atlantis Yacht Club, amid cannon fire and salutes, held its 55th Annual Commissioning Day, signaling the start of the summer boating season.

With club officers and members all attired in dress black yacht club uniforms and white captains hats, the day began with a review of the club's fleet by members of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, United States Power Squadron and Club Commodore Kent Hairston.

Commander Richard Pfaff, his wife, Executive Officer Elaine Pfaff of the USPS and Commander John Abreau of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 014-04-05 toured the club's docks as members' boats reflected the bright morning sunshine.

Many boats had hoisted multi-colored strings of flags, in a display called "dress ship" for the occasion.

The Atlantis Yacht Club was founded in 1961 when five men who shared a love of boating decided to form a club for other like-minded individuals. When 25 people showed up for the initial meeting to which 15 were invited, they knew they were off to a good start.

After three years of meeting on the water at prearranged locations along the Jersey Shore, the group decided it was time to establish a home port.

The first Atlantis Yacht Club marina was established on the Shrewsbury River in Sea Bright at the current location of the Covesail Marina. The club house at the time was an apartment in an old Victorian home.

By 1966, the growing membership — and their boats — required more room so the land for the present location was purchased in Monmouth Beach. At the time, it was flooded marsh, home to all sorts of creatures.

Over the next two years, the marina was dredged and bulkheaded, and the docks were constructed. Now the Clubhouse offers a swimming pool and tennis courts as well as slips for 54 boats. There are currently 60 member families.

Flag Lieutenant and Past Commodore Dr. Leonard Steiner said the Club has both sailing and powerboat members. The powerboat class makes up about 90 percent of the membership.

Following the fleet review, the members lined the walk to the clubhouse for the commissioning ceremony, which included an invocation from Chaplain Laura Borelli, the singing of the Star Spangled Banner, The Pledge of Allegiance and God Bless America, sung by all in attendance.

As the flags were raised, the U.S. Ensign, the Atlantis Club Burgee, the club flag, and the Dress Ship flags, a cannon sounded. Despite its small size, the cannon issued a boom that reverberated across the Shrewsbury River.

Steiner said the commissioning ceremony had been taking place every year since the club was founded.

"Everything at the club is rooted in the maritime traditions," said Dr.Steiner. "Yacht clubs are tradition."

Unlike a marina, where people just hop in their boats and go fishing, Steiner said, the Atlantis Yacht Club is like a family. "When something happens, members help out one another."

A clear example of that was the presence of Sid Stein, a club member who fell from his boat and was seriously injured several months earlier. Stein, who is still recovering, spoke movingly at the ceremony and thanked the members for all of their kindness and assistance.
