Discover a smooth ride on the great lakes with a power catamaran.
Published: Saturday, September 29, 2012 7:00 am By: Great Lakes Powercats
In the rough waters off Australia and South Africa, all rescue boats, police boats, and close to half of recreational boats are power catamarans. Along the east coast of the United States, power catamarans are fast becoming popular among fishing and cruising boaters who often venture out in rough conditions. Closer to home here in the Great Lakes, the Arnold Ferry service to Mackinac Island runs cats, and the Lake Michigan ferry is a catamaran, too.
Why? Because cats are safe, stable, fast, fuel efficient, and draw very little water. But the biggest reason Aussies, South Africans and offshore anglers choose cats is they provide the smoothest ride on rough waters. When the waters are rough, smart boaters are turning to the catamaran’s stable ride and seaworthy safety. The ride and protection afforded by cats is so extraordinary, they can add an extra month of boating time to the Great Lakes boating season in the spring and the fall.
In the US, 85% of the power catamarans are built by the PowerCat Group under the Glacier Bay, World Cat, Carolina Cat and Livingston brands. They are all powered by quiet and efficient four-stroke outboard engines, and just one ride on a cat in rough water makes a believer out of boating enthusiasts.
Now, here is the great news: these cats are finally getting to the Great Lakes. Dave Gray and Joe Kostrzewa, from Traverse City, Michigan, have been partners in various ventures spanning over 40 years. They owned Power Cat Group cats in Florida for years and could not understand why the boats were not in the Great Lakes. To introduce cats to the Great Lakes, they teamed up with Brad Koster, the owner of EJ Mertaugh’s Boat Works in Hessel, Michigan, and working with Andrew Brown, President of the Power Cat Group, and formulated their latest venture: Great Lakes Power Cats, LLC.
Great Lakes Power Cats, LLC is now the exclusive Midwest distributor (including all of the Great Lakes and Canada) for the world’s largest power catamaran builder, the Power Cat Group. Great Lakes Power Cats represents four brands and 25 models of Glacier Bay, World Cat, Carolina Cat and Livingston catamarans ranging from 8’ to 34’.
The main goal of Great Lakes Power Cats is to develop the territory with quality dealers and representatives who can enthusiastically demonstrate the unique performance of these special vessels. The first dealer on board was Mertaugh’s in Hessel, Michigan. The next large dealer group to join was Jefferson Beach Marina, with locations in St. Clair Shores, Grand Haven and Charlevoix, Michigan, as well as Toledo, Ohio and Chicago, Illinois. In addition, Bay Breeze Yacht Charters out of Traverse City has become a representative and has a Glacier Bay 2770 available for demonstration and charter. As the dealer network has grown, catamaran boats have sold well as Great Lakes boaters discover the ride and comfort that Joe and Dave experienced with their own boats on Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Joe and Dave know that the catamaran ride is key to making boaters into “believers.” Accordingly, Great Lakes Power Cats and its dealers have demo boats of various sizes available in the Michigan ports of Traverse City, Hessel, Grand Haven and St. Clair Shores. The group is continuing to expand the dealer and representative network, looking for top dealers in Northern Wisconsin, the East shore of Michigan, Canada, and Lakes Erie and Ontario.
You can reach Great Lakes Power Cats at 1-877-292-6543. Visit them at www.greatlakespowercats.com or www.powercatgroup.com to learn more about the cats or to schedule a sea trial.

Understanding the Lake Michigan Ferry Routes Map: A Comprehensive Guide
If you’re planning to travel across Lake Michigan, then understanding the ferry routes map is crucial. Being the second-largest of the Great Lakes and one of the most beautiful in North America, Lake Michigan offers an array of options for tourists, travelers, and locals alike when it comes to crossing its waters. However, it can be challenging to understand the various ferry routes if you’re unfamiliar with them.
Don’t worry – in this comprehensive guide, we’ll break down each ferry route and help you navigate your way around Lake Michigan.
First, let’s understand what a ferry route map is. A ferry route map shows all the possible routes that ferries take across any given water body or lake . These maps are particularly helpful in giving passengers an overview of how they can reach their destinations by boat.
Now onto our guide:
1. Ludington to Manitowoc This route operates daily from May through September and takes between 2-3 hours depending on weather conditions . The S.S Badger carferry takes passengers across a picturesque route that’s sure to provide stunning views of both shores as you cross from Michigan to Wisconsin or vice versa.
2. Chicago to Muskegon The Lake Express Catamaran runs this route during summer months offering an efficient 2-hour connecting service between two vibrant cities overlooking Lake Michigan. Both end points are rich with culture so hop on board and experience more than just the comfort of your ride!
3. Milwaukee to Muskegon Another connectivity option between these two iconic places is offered by another catamaran known as the “Lake Express”. With this trip taking approximately 2½hrs for a cost-efficient ticket price compared with other alternatives; it’s become much easier now for visitors who prefer traveling via ship over roadways sacrificing breathtaking views while enroute.
4.Chicago Shoreline Sightseeing For those not in need of transportation but who want to see Chicago from a different angle, a riverboat cruise offers a great option. These tours are offered from April through November and showcase some of the city’s most iconic buildings and landmarks .
5. Manitowoc/Algoma to Washington Island This route might not be on every tourist ‘s list, but it is worth considering. The ferry ride takes passengers to the remote Washington Island located between Michigan Bay and Green Bay – home to Whitefish Dunes State Park, Schoolhouse Beach. Algoma serves as an alternative port for some organizations or major civic events during peak traveling season when Manitowoc pier becomes congested.
In conclusion to all five routes on this comprehensive guide are provided by trusted ferry operators providing comfortable, safe sailing with experienced crew members who strive their utmost best for catering your every need while en-route so that you can sit back, relax and take in all that Lake Michigan has to offer. Happy travels!

But before we dive into how to navigate this map like a pro, let’s take a quick look at what it is. This map showcases all of the ferry routes available for traveling across Lake Michigan – offering travelers an exciting way to explore new places while enjoying the stunning views of one of America’s largest freshwater lakes. There are several ferry companies that operate on Lake Michigan, each with its own unique route and schedule.
So now, let’s get into some tips on how to navigate this map like a true professional.
1. Determine your starting point: The first step in navigating the Lake Michigan Ferry Routes Map is determining where your journey will begin. Are you starting from Wisconsin or Michigan? Knowing your starting location will help narrow down which ferries are best suited for you.
2. Choose Your Destination: Once you have identified your starting point, it’s time to choose your destination(s). If you’re looking for adventure-packed destinations like Mackinac Island or Door County – the ferry operators already market these as excellent ways seeing these locations up from water perspective.
3. Check Schedules No travel plan would be complete without checking schedules beforehand – unless freedom and flexibility are what travelers after!
4. Purchase Tickets/ Make Reservations Once everything lines up with schedules, it’s time to purchase tickets/reserve spots for the desired sailings– usually done through online booking or by calling ahead.
5. Arrive Early It goes without saying- arrive early! Especially during peak season demand runs high on varying routes- showing up last minute would limit chances if any availability left over (unless freestyle traveler mindset likes resetting plans at the whim of chance availability). It’s always better to be early than late and getting stuck waiting for another available slot.
6. Gather Information on Amenities Different ferries have different amenities, so make sure to gather information about things like food availability or pet-friendly accommodations if needed. Some ferries offer specific seating arrangements (for example, large comfy seats in the cabin that would cost extra) also make some inquiries how crowded it might get during peak travel times offering a more comfortable experience earlier purchase might offer additional value.
7. Enjoy Lake Michigan’s beauty Finally, once you’ve navigated your way through the Lake Michigan Ferry Routes Map and boarded your chosen ferry route- start enjoying some of America’s most beautiful lake views! Kick back with an enjoyable book, chat with friends (if travelling in numbers), and take in all that nature has to offer along the way.
In conclusion, there are plenty of ways travelers can make their trip a success when travelling on Lake Michigan’s ferry routes. Whether you’re looking for adventure-packed destinations or simply a new way of seeing familiar sights- utilizing ferry service offers spectacular experiences throughout summer months! By following these tips above – navigating this lake map like a pro will guarantee cruising success during this upcoming summer!
