Sailing lessons on a catamaran

We truly love our jobs, but we take our sailing seriously so you will be safe on the water. Our teaching philosophy is simple, fun, entertaining, and engaging, focused on safety, and providing the knowledge to set you confidently on your path for sailing.

The American Sailing Association (ASA) program has structured levels of sailing standards, which are examined at progressive certification levels at our sailing schools. Students who learn to sail with Sail Away Catamarans receive a Logbook that lists the standards, certification, and records of sailing experience. All courses and examinations are run by ASA-qualified instructors. When a certification level is successfully completed, your logbook is signed and stamped so that any charter or rental fleet operator can see your level of competency.

Whether you add ASA courses to your charter or desire to take classes as a part of a group of students, Sail Away Sailing School has you covered.

We are passionate about sailing, catamarans, and the care of our pristine local waters. It is our pleasure to give you a top-notch education aboard immaculate vessels while cruising these coveted waters and having a great time!

Sailing Seminars / Live-Aboard Lessons

Catamarans are the boat of choice for many as they offer spaciousness, comfort, and they don’t heel over. If you are new to catamarans or have never been on one, we offer 6 hour sailing seminars. These seminars are taught completely on the water aboard one of our sailing catamarans. The seminars provide an open forum that introduces you to terminology and hardware specific to cats, and identifies the differences between anchoring and docking a catamaran. You will also have ample opportunity to hoist the sails or take the wheel if you like. If you are considering living aboard, we will also discuss lessons learned and handy tips discovered by our staff while living aboard as well as discussion on how to find the right boat for you if you want to live the cruising lifestyle. These seminars are scheduled several times a sailing season and are generally held with no more than 10 “students” – contact us for available dates . These seminars cost $400/person - feel free to bring your own food and refreshments.

ASA Sailing School for Catamaran Cruisers & Liveaboards

Build sailing techniques & prepare for the sailing lifestyle.

catamaran sailing school and liveaboard training

ASA sailing school & Live-Aboard Instructors

A catamaran sailing school was unheard of years ago. In the early days of Catamaran Guru, catamaran experts, Stephen & Estelle Cockcroft kept their cruising kitty going by teaching American Sailing Association courses and offered liveaboard orientation experiences aboard their monohull and later their catamarans. They know by experience that a liveaboard seaschool is the best way to learn to sail.

Though no longer offering instruction or liveaboard orientation experiences themselves, their passion to help others follow their nautical dreams of yacht ownership has kept them involved in sail training and hands-on cruising lifestyle experiences.

Why catamaran sailing school is important

The ASA sail training courses provide a good grounding for all new sailors and advanced courses increase competency and confidence. While learning to sail monohulls will provide many useful basics of sailing knowledge, instruction aboard a catamaran, and even better aboard your catamaran or a similar model is the best possible scenario.

Getting yacht insurance , especially a policy you can afford, requires proven related boating experience. The only way to get that experience safely is with a catamaran sailing school that offers liveaboard hands-on experiences.

Another vital role sea school plays for cruisers is getting the enthusiasm and confidence of the first mate up. While not always the case, often one partner in a sailing duo is the driving force of the cruising life dream while the other is often reluctant. Here are our tips on overcoming the reluctance of a catamaran cruising partner .

The top tip is to participate in a liveaboard experience with a seaschool even before you buy a boat.

couples are living their sailing dreams

Weeklong liveaboard sailing school is invaluable for anyone who plans to own their own boat, but especially those who plan to be full-time cruisers. During these hands-on sailing experiences, your seaschool instructor combines our real-life practical methods with the most up-to-date sailing theory courses. These experiences set you up to enjoy a stress-free cruising lifestyle. Especially when you can train aboard your own boat, you can become comfortable with your equipment and configurations for operation and safety.

You not only learn how to be a team as you sail, anchor, trim sails, and navigate safely from point A to point B, you also get your questions answered by experienced liveaboard sailors about how to downsize, provision for long cruises, and mostly, how to enjoy watching the sunset in a gorgeous anchorage with your favorite beverage in hand.

Our Seaschool Students Excel As Sailors & Cruisers

We are very proud of our former seaschool students. Most of them have embraced yachting, sailing, and cruising in some way or another. Many of our graduates have successfully own their own boats. Some are long-term cruisers or charter boat owners and some have even done successful circumnavigations. Others have done long-term sabbaticals and several liveaboard school graduates have even moved on to successful careers in the marine industry as yacht brokers, charter yacht operators, and charter management.

Your next step will be to sail around the world on your own boat…

We actually went somewhere (Key Largo), rather than returning to the dock each evening. The course was made to be an adventure, as well as simply instructional. The weather was “made to order” — sun and gentle breeze Saturday through Wednesday, then Force 8 for our ‘foul weather instruction’ on Thursday.

I thought it was an excellent, challenging course. It definitely wasn’t a “cruise.” The instructor expected a lot from the students. I like that.

I have nothing but the utmost praise for your entire operation and the quality of the instruction that I received. Al Hatch is a consummate instructor and brings to this activity a love and a passion that is genuine and expansive. I hope to be able to return to Blue Water to experience some of the higher-level courses of instruction, and I certainly would have no trouble at all recommending your company to anyone.

When are We Open?

After closing for the season at the end of October 2023, we will open again from April 2024 through October 2024.

Where are We?

Take a breath of fresh air at one of Northern Virginia’s most popular parks while cruising in the sunshine!  While you are here,

map

be sure to take a walk down Leesylvania State Park’s path along the shore to read about the park history and understand why our sailing school has such an iconic and historical significance here on the Potomac River.

Northern Virginia Sailing School is nestled at the marina in Leesylvania State Park, directly on the lower Potomac River in Woodbridge, Virginia.  We are less than an hour from Washington, DC, easily accessible from I-95.

What Do We Offer?

The sailing school has been operating at this location since 2010, graduating countless sailors in American Sailing certifications . There are sailboats available to rent for certified sailors, captains available to take out your group, and specialized classes for all levels of sailing expertise.  We even offer classes for new sailboat owners on their own vessels.  All sails are scheduled by appointment, using an online scheduler which is fast, flexible, and convenient.

What Do We Sail?

Our most popular sailboat, used for introductory lessons and rentals, are Catalina 22s with outboard motors.  Catalina 22s have tough fiberglass hulls, masthead sloop (with a main and head sail), and swing keels.  Considered a “Daysailer,” they are resilient and safe teaching boats requiring lots of hands-on rigging and steering.  In 1995, Catalina 22s were even entered into the American Sailing Hall of Fame. It continues in popularity to this day as the first boat of many new sailors.  Once the Catalina 22 is mastered, it is more intuitive to make the jump to bigger, live-aboard sailboats. We also have other similar-style popular sailboats brands that we use interchangeably for a varied sailing education, such as the Hunter and the San Juan.

Our more advanced courses are held on a much larger Hunter 31 with full navigation equipment, inboard diesel motor, and all the gear needed to experience cruising on a live-aboard sailboat.

Who Are We?

We have a small crew of top-notch instructors with varied experience all over the world.  Our focus in education is quality, as we limit class sizes for optimum teaching.  Each of our instructors are committed to safety.  Click here to meet them!

What Sets Us Apart?

At Northern Virginia Sailing School, you can expect your American Sailing classes to be entirely on the water.  You can expect to have more time sailing, with a very quick motor past the breakers to the river.  You can expect to learn at your own pace and schedule, with classes available throughout the week and weekend for you to sign up as you are able.

How to get started?

If you cannot wait to get started and are new to sailing, you can sign up for a Try Sail class , book a Cruise , or sign up for the American Sailing 101 course, Basic Keel Boat .  If you have sailed before and are certified, we offer Rentals on our Catalina 22s and advanced American Sailing certification courses such as:

ASA 102: Basic Keel Boat 2 coming soon ASA 103: Basic Coastal Cruising ASA 104: Bareboat Cruising

We simply offer quality sailing with fantastic instruction.   Check out our reviews and facebook page – they speak for themselves:

ABSOLUTELY PERFECT ADVENTURE!

I had an amazing week of sailing and exploring the US Virgin Islands with Go Sail Virgin Islands and Captain Genevieve Evans. First and foremost, Captain G is a wonderful and knowledgeable teacher. She thoroughly explained concepts and maneuvers, demonstrating them as well, and then gave us the opportunity to practice throughout the week. She was extremely patient and helped to build my confidence behind the helm tremendously. Additionally, she knows the best spots on each island and made the trip not just about learning and growing as a sailor, but also enjoying time away. I will never forget this trip- if you have the opportunity to learn with Go Sail and Captain G, you won’t regret it. Thanks again Captain G for an absolutely perfect adventure!

The whole experience did not disappoint

The whole experience did not disappoint—truly a wonderful life memory. The boat was in nice condition and served us well. Captain J T Quinn was absolutely fantastic at teaching us and was so easy to have around. And doubled as a tour guide. We would recommend it to anyone.

Sail VI premium ASA course!

We took the week live aboard sailing lessons for ASA 101,103,104,114 and it was awesome. Sailed around USVI. Our instructor JT was thorough and a pleasure to be with. Thank you for an awesome experience. Already booked our next sailing excursion as a skipper!

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Just spent a week with Capt. Genevieve navigating around the USVI, a thoroughly enjoyable learning experience. Her teaching style a perfect mix of coaching and hands-on, building my ability and confidence with each passing day. Completed ASA Sailing Certifications 101 103 104 114, such that I’ll look forward to returning next season to charter a boat with my family. We also visited their favorite moorages, snorkeling sites, and places to go ashore for food and fun. Even better, they both provide great hospitality with tasty food, a comfortable boat, and good company.

EXCELLENT INSTRUCTION!

My family and I sailed with Captain JT Quinn, who provided excellent instruction and is just an all-around good guy. While I went through the hands-on ASA instructions for 101, 103, 104, and 114, my family was able to enjoy cruising around the USVI and BVI. Every afternoon, we would anchor or moor in a bay where we would swim, snorkel, paddle board, and relax for the evening. I was nervous after reading the 4 books and preparing but JT made it really comfortable and easy to learn. He's very knowledgeable and answered every question I had. We shared stories and a lot of laughs. He and Go Sail VI aren't just teaching people to sail, they are cultivating a community of sailors. That's what it's all about in the end — knowing how to

SO REWARDING!

I can’t believe how much we learned while sailing with Captain G and Trevon! They explained everything so well and really helped us understand the art of sailing. We now feel confident to bareboat our own charter soon! This was definitely the way to earn our sailing experience.

Phenomenal Experience!

Our week-long catamaran sailing instruction for ASA 106, 114 and 118 certifications was phenomenal! We chartered a week-long monohull instruction for our ASA 101, 103 and 104 certifications in Florida a year prior. There was no comparison with our Go Sail Virgin Islands live aboard experience far exceeding our expectations. Sweet & Salty, the 44' cat, was spacious, clean and well provisioned. Trevon is an exceptional instructor. He has a depth of knowledge and experience, was patient and tailored his coaching to our individual needs. Thanks for the learnings, experience and memories!
