The most boats ever will compete in the 100th Bayview Yacht Club race to Mackinac Island

B illed on its website as the “world’s longest continuously run long-distance freshwater yacht race,” the 100th Bayview Mackinac Race is set to start Saturday.

A record-setting 334 boats have registered for the 100th year of the race, shattering the record of 316 in 1985 and a huge contrast compared with the 200 boats that raced last year, said David Stoyka, spokesman for the Bayview Yacht Club, which puts on the race.

Bayview Yacht Club says boats start leaving the Black River in Port Huron around 8 a.m. on race day and will continue leaving until around noon. From the Black River, they will proceed up the St. Clair River, under the Blue Water Bridge, into Lake Huron.

The first scheduled start time in Lake Huron is 11:30 a.m., with starts every 10 minutes until approximately 1:30 p.m. The starts may be delayed due to weather conditions.

This year, for the 100th running, the race will follow the original 1925 route and span 204 nautical miles. From the starting point, the boats will head north along the Michigan shoreline, passing south of Bois Blanc Island, sailing west to east at the finish line between Round Island and Mackinac Island, organizers said.

The range of boats are expected to finish in between 30 and 60 hours.

The sailors

Teams at all skill levels have entered the race, which draws competitors from around the world.  The highly skilled racers know they will cross the bow of competitors within inches. Still, there's always risk of a crash with the slightest miscalculation.

"Everybody recognizes this is super intense," said champion sailor  Tim Prophit , 65, of St. Clair Shores, past commodore of Bayview Yacht Club and owner of Fast Tango, a North American 40 sailboat.

The teams are vying for trophies and flags to show their accomplishments.

The J.L. Hudson Trophy is awarded to the boat with the best corrected time in Division I, and the Canadian Club Classic Trophy is awarded to the boat with the best corrected time in Division II.

How can spectators follow the race?

Spectators can go to bycmack.com during the race and click on “RaceTracking” link to watch real-time GPS positioning of all the race boats, or, on your mobile device, download the free app YB Races and select the current race.

Boats will start arriving at Mackinac Island on Sunday afternoon and continue until Monday evening, all dependent upon the wind.

Finishes can be seen from Windermere Point on Mackinac Island at the south end of Main Street.

Sailors who have completed 25 Bayview Mackinac races are called “Old Goats,” according to the club, while those who have completed 50 are called “Grand Rams.” 

"Double Goats" are sailors who have completed 25 Bayview Mackinac races and 25 Chicago Yacht Club race to Mackinac races. This year’s Chicago to Mackinac race encountered strong winds in Lake Michigan , snapping some boats’ masts and tossing one sailor overboard. No one was hurt.

Volunteers who have served for 15 years on the Race Committee are honored with the title “Old Forts,” as designated by the Race Committee.

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI - The waters off Mackinac Island serve as the finish line for two big sailboat races each summer. But this weekend, Mackinac also gets to morph into a hometown cheering section for an all-island crew that’s competing in the Bayview Mackinac Race.

In an inspired move by the island’s fire chief, Jason St. Onge, he worked with several islanders to rally a team to join the record number of boats competing in the 100th running of this iconic race.

And because this is an island story, of course there’s a neat historic twist or two. This year, the Bayview Mackinac Race will be running on the original 1925 course. And the all-island crew will be skippered by Bart Huthwaite Jr. Race lovers know that Huthwaite’s late father is the man who helped find and restore the Bernida - the sleek wooden sloop that won the very first Bayview Mackinac Race in 1925. After the 32-foot boat faded from view for decades, the elder Huthwaite bought the Bernida and hired out the deep restoration work. In 2012, the resurrected Bernida again won the race.

So there could be all kinds of kismet going on later today when the all-Mackinac crew starts the race aboard Rascal, a Catalina 34 MKII.

Huthwaite Jr. is treasurer of the Mackinac Island Yacht Club (MIYC). His son, Chaz, and St. Onge will be joined on Rascal by the island’s grocery store owner, Andrew Doud, as well as past MIYC Commodore Mike Gidley and current Rear Commodore Mike Hegarty.

St. Onge said islanders are typically so busy prepping to welcome all the Bayview Mackinac and Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac crews each summer that they typically don’t have time to even think about tossing their own hats into the racing pool.

“I owned a sailboat for many years, but due to the busy nature of the island during the races, I was never able to race big races,” St. Onge said. “However, a few years ago when I realized the 100th was on the horizon, the idea came to organize an all-island crew to come up the big lake. Not sure what we’ll place, I know we’ll have one heck of a cheering section on the island!”

Gidley, who has been part of the island community for more than three decades, said getting the crew assembled took some work. “Heck yes, the thought of an all-island-crewed boat in the 100th race, that was a no-brainer, but a lot of folks here do not race sailboats. They take care of everyone once the boats arrive.”

Huthwaite said this race aboard Rascal has a particularly deep meaning for him, as his son is part of the crew. He said he’s glad St. Onge “twisted our arms” to get the boat entered in the race as an all-island team.

“Our Team Mackinac crew is based on the island and while we don’t believe we can muster a win like the crew on Bernida did, we are going to be a part of history nonetheless.”

The Bayview Mackinac Race has 332 boats registered in this weekend’s event - a record number that’s fitting for a race celebrating its century mark. It’s considered one of the longest annual freshwater yacht racing events in the world.

As a nod to the race’s impressive history, boat crews will be competing on the original course mapped out for the first Bayview Mackinac Race in 1925. It stretches 235 miles up the Lake Huron coast.

This means all the racing yachts will start in southern Lake Huron, then head north and west before making the turn toward Mackinac. The boats will pass south of Bois Blanc Island before crossing the finish line that sits between Round Island and Mackinac Island.

And once the Rascal’s crew rounds that curve for home, there’s no doubt there will be a huge hometown crowd cheering it to the finish line, said Liz Ware, vice president of sales and marking for her family’s Mission Point Resort, which hosts all the racing teams for the awards ceremony on the resort’s Great Lawn.

“When Mike Hegarty told me there was going to be an all-island entry in the race, I simply said, how can we help support?,” Ware said. “We love hosting the awards party on the Great Lawn, the friends and comraderies of the sailing community, and of course, we love the island. Supporting Team Mackinac in the 100th Bayview Yacht Club’s Race to Mackinac is icing on the cake.”

Hegarty said St. Onge’s idea of an all-island crew for the race’s big anniversary was something he couldn’t pass up.

“We’ve all known each other for a long time and that is what is so special about sailing: the friends and memories you make along the way. This trip is going to be epic for all of us on Rascal, epic.”

Boats from 17 states and Canada are set to participate in what is one of the longest-running freshwater yacht races in the world. The first group of boats is set to hit the starting line at 11:30 a.m.

“Anyone up the Thumb coast of Lake Huron should be in for quite a show as the entire fleet sails up to Mackinac, and if there is a downwind blowing and spinnakers unfurled it will be a spectacular view from the shore,” said Charlie Trost, race chair for the 2024 Bayview Mackinac.

Once the boats reach Mackinac Island, it’s party time.

The Bayview Mackinac Race follows exactly a week behind the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, which this year saw a fast course, heavy storms on Lake Michigan, a man overboard rescue , and a new record set.

St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club sails into new renovations and expansions

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club is transforming and building back.

“We have completely demolished the entire club building that burned,” said Michael Wynn, Commodore of the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club. “We have prepared the site to start the rebuilding process.”

The yacht club caught on fire in November 2023. The building was deemed a total loss. Since then the building has been demolished . In the meantime, club members still have a place to go, the sailing center.

“The building was demolished in May of this year,” said Wynn. “Then following that, you have a lot of site prep and clean up.”

The sailing center is across the parking lot from where the yacht club sat, it was expanded and renovated in April.

“We’ve expanded the deck, we’ve expanded the downstairs,” said Wynn. “We’ve put the beach sand in. Having somewhere for our entire yacht club family to come immediately after was one of the most important things we could have done.”

NewsChannel 7 is told work is beginning on rebuilding the yacht club.

“We are proud to be able to unveil some preliminary floor plans and site plans to our membership this month at our all-member meeting,” said Wynn. “We’re excited to unveil it to our members for the first time. The site plan and the initial floor plans for the new building.”

There is no definitive word on when the building will be finished.

“We know that the rebuild process could take somewhere between 12 to 18 months,” said Wynn. “We hope to be open within the next 18 to 24 months,”

The yacht club’s commodore tells News Channel Seven despite the fire they are continuing to bring in new members every month. They are also continuing to expand the amenities.

Review: stefani, morissette spark a 'hella good' start to minnesota yacht club festival.

Experience matters. Even in rock 'n' roll — and especially at rock 'n' roll festivals.

After eight months of cutesy marketing and ample media coverage, St. Paul's Minnesota Yacht Club festival finally set sail Friday on Harriet Island Regional Park and got off to a remarkably swift and smooth start for an inaugural music fest. Credit for its success should largely go to its seasoned crew.

The music lineup in the fest is heavily loaded with old pros, and that proved not to be a bad thing Friday. Opening day's feminist rock trifecta of Alanis Morissette, Gwen Stefani and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts all skillfully strutted their stuff and showed the kids how to get it done. Never mind that there were very few kids among the crowd of 34,000 fans.

As much as those venerable performers deserve props, though, so do the operators of Minnesota's first new major music fest in more than a decade.

The event was launched by C3 Presents, the Texas-founded company behind Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and a couple dozen more festivals. These folks truly know the music fest business. About time Twin Cities fans benefitted from it.

Yacht Club's electronic wristbands and well-trained security staff made for smooth entrances. The stage production and sound were primo. The layout and flow between the two stages was well-organized. The music ran nearly nonstop and on time. And all the assorted VIP and "platinum" areas offered added comfort for those willing to pay at least a few hundred bucks more more than the relatively good-value $215-$255 general-admission two-day passes.

One noticeable snag: Food and drink lines got long as the crowd swelled in the late afternoon. Good thing many Minnesotans are too cheap to down $15 beers, or things could've been worse.

Seriously, though, the crowd on opening day was discernibly devoid of youth and almost exclusively middle-aged. MYC's lack of musical and generational diversity could be considered a shortcoming for what was billed as a hip, modern festival.

All those teens and college kids buying up throwback Chili Peppers and No Doubt T-shirts at Urban Outfitters and Kohl's are apparently more into cheap fashion ware than they are those bands' music, because none of them showed up to Yacht Club on opening day. If they had to move the festival to September for any reason, falling on a school day probably wouldn't hurt attendance much.

There's plenty to learn and apply to future years. In the meantime, here are some general takeaways from Friday's festival:

Women obviously ruled the day. It was a nostalgic lineup, sure, but this one trait about Friday's lineup could be seen as a hip, modern element. Aside from specifically targeted events like Lilith Fair, you never would have seen a festival with that many female singers atop the poster card in the 1990s, when Morissette and Stefani's old band No Doubt were in their heyday; certainly not in the '80s, when Jett dominated.

Losing the Black Crowes on the lineup due to illness was a real disappointment, but that just emphasized the women headliners all the more. What's more, the day also saw electrifying sets by a couple other women-led acts, too: Country rocker Morgan Wade and the punky hometown band who kicked off the day in hard-throttling style, Gully Boys.

Stefani seemed to be having the most fun. Her husband, Blake Shelton, may have wisely picked up on the strong feminine vibe when he showed up to sing one song with her — and only one! — their new single "Purple Irises," compared with the three she sang with him in town at his TC Summer Jam gig in 2022 . That bit seemed to delight her a lot, but so did the crowd's excited reaction throughout her 75-minute performance, from "Sunday Morning" at the start to the mid-set groover "Hella Good" to her firebrand penultimate song, "Just a Girl."

"Think about how many years I've been loving you guys!" she cheered before the finale, adding, "This song means even more nowadays." Especially on this day.

The elder stateswoman rocked the hardest . This was the best and most bombastic of Jett's many gigs here in recent years. Of course, the 65-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's main hits went over in a big way at a big, summery music fest, including "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," "Bad Reputation" and the Runaways' "Cherry Bomb." She also dropped in a cool batch of edgier, deeper cuts with inclusive messaging, including "Different" and a cover of the Minnesota classic "Androgynous," which she introduced by saying, "I'm a big fan of this band and its songwriter, Paul Westerberg and the Replacements."

Morissette hasn't changed much (and that's a good thing). With an orange-ish moon adding dramatic ambience overhead, the Canadian record-maker/breaker put on a rather gutsy, in-your-face, 90-minute performance predictably filled with her big hits, including "One Hand in My Pocket" as the opener and "You Oughta Know" near the end. But she made the set way better than just a nostalgic singalong by delivering some similarly emphatic-sounding, inner-tumultuous newer songs, including the epic piano ballad "Rest" and the rockier "Smiling," the latter written for her hit Broadway musical, "Jagged Little Pill." Her voice was as strong as ever, her band was versatile, and she clearly deserved being the headliner.

There was one new element to the show we didn't see in the '90s, though: Morissette brought out her daughter Onyx, age 8, and another young friend to sing "Ironic." How ironic to hear it sung with such sweetness.

Even the younger acts sang the Gen-X hits. Wade earned loud cheers for her semi-ironic cover of Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl." Nerdy but impactful Kalamazoo indie-rocker Michigander sang part of "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." The U2 song fit his own lost-wanderer, soul-searching vibe, evidenced by his unreleased tune that followed, "Giving Up." And after their own hit "Who's Laughing Now," local rockers Durry ended their set with a rousing take on Jimmyeatworld's "The Middle" (technically a millennials hit, but close enough).

The day's breakout performer was… . Sporting a Jett T-shirt and playing under a blazing midafternoon sun — things would soon cool down nicely with cloud cover — Wade coolly delivered an ultra-impressive set of musically refined, ruggedly poetic twang-rock that greatly contrasted her choice of covers. The Virginia singer came off like a tattooed Stevie Nicks in down-and-out rockers like "The Night" and "2 AM in London," each fueled by her smoky but sweet voice. A genuine wow.

What about Day Two? The bro factor should be much higher on Saturday, with the Red Hot Chili Peppers headlining, preceded by the Offspring, Gary Clark Jr., the Hold Steady, Soul Asylum and Hippo Campus. Tickets are sold-out except for some higher-end platinum and VIP options.

Chicago Yacht Club's Race to Mackinac continues Saturday

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Hundreds of boats are sailing from Chicago towards Mackinac Island on Saturday.

The cruising division took off Friday and the racing division began Saturday.

The Race to Mackinac is the world's longest freshwater race. The length of the race is 333 miles from Navy Pier to the Round Island Channel, just off of Mackinac Island, Michigan.

There are more than 250 boats and 2,100 racers from around the world participating.

The first Race to Mackinac took place in 1898.

Surprise Guest Wows Crowd At Yacht Fest [PHOTOS]

The first-ever Minnesota Yacht Club Festival took place on Friday at Harriet Island in St. Paul. A massive crowd was on hand to see Durry, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, The Head and the Heart, Gwen Stefani, and Alanis Morisette.

The day started off on a down note when the festival announced The Black Crowes had to cancel due to an illness in the band. Festival organizers adjusted the band lineup on the fly and Durry and The Head and the Heart had to adjust their start times. The highlight of the day was when Gwen Stefani started to sing her latest song "Purple Irises," and her husband, country music star, Blake Shelton came out on stage to join her for the number.

The weather was a little humid by the end of the night but overall is was a great day to be outdoors taking in a ton of fabulous music and great food. Day 2 is Saturday and features local favorite Soul Asylum, The Offspring, and is highlighted by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Check out the day one photo gallery below.

Modern lines, sporty look, guaranteed comfort on and below deck

All these characteristics are easily recognizable in the sporty and modern design of all Pyxis Yachts’ creations, including the brand-new P-30 WA. The latter is a multi-purpose boat, comfortable both outside and in the cabin, safe in all conditions and suitable for both fishing trips and fast cruising.  ” The lines are sleek and modern; the semi-vertical bow descends into a variable V-shaped hull resting on four powerful running chines –  explains Alessandro Chessa (Akes Design) , the Italian long-experienced yacht designer who designed the P-30WA.

The hull, developed with the use of the latest CAD technologies, is longer and wider than a conventional 30-footer’s one and guarantees great lateral and longitudinal stability, rolling and pitching resistance, quick planing and exceptional seaworthiness. Powered by twin outboards, the P-30WA is an extremely fast, dynamic and comfortable yacht, perfect for both fishing and fast cruising.

Interior design: a special focus on spaces and furnishing

Pyxis Yacht 30 WA Fishing, the cabin-cruiser for sport fishing

The new Pyxis Yachts brand is launching its first cabin-cruiser model with a walkaround deck layout. This 9.40 m model is also available in a Fishing version for fishermen looking for comfort.

Fishing version for the Pyxis Yacht P-30 WA

The Pyxis Yacht P-30 WA is a versatile boat for short cruising, designed by Italian designers Alessandro Chessa and Carlo Galeazzi. Inside, there are two cabins - a U-shaped saloon convertible into a double berth and a mid-cabin at the stern as well as a separate shower room. Eager to create a fishing version of its daycruiser, Pyxis Yachts has worked in collaboration with leading fishing specialists, including top sports fishermen, taking inspiration from well-known American fishing brands.

A stable, high-performance boat

The shipyard has therefore based itself on the marine qualities of its boat to optimize its fishing version. To increase the fishing comfort, the Pyxis 30 WA Fishing is a very stable boat, due to a deep V hull with a 20° angle on the stern. This is an advantage when hauling the catch on board. We also find the characteristics of the cruising version, i.e. performance and safety, in particular thanks to a good freeboard height.

A deck plan for easy movement

The walkaround deck plan also allows easy movement around the boat , from bow to stern, via the gangways. In addition, the foredeck will be shortened to facilitate the fishing action.

The hard-top previously fixed on the freeboards will be placed on the kitchen cabinet, always in order not to hinder the fishing action and to make the passage of the fishing rod more fluid. It will also be possible to install custom made rod holders and spinnaker poles which allow the rods to be spread out on the outside when sailing.

A cockpit designed for fishing

In this fishing version, the cockpit has been freed from the fixed starboard bench seat and replaced by a rod storage area integrated into the bulwark. To port and aft, the bench seats are also replaced by folding seats in the bulwarks, to offer maximum fishing space. The port bench seat now gives way to a fishing station at the stern, which will be equipped with a live-well tank to keep the fish alive with seawater circulation. There will also be a cutting station, as well as survival, battery and storage space. Just in front of the engines, another refrigerated storage area will be used to keep the catch.

High-end Smith rod holders with seawater evacuation will be installed throughout the boat: 3 at 0° on the stern module and two at 30° on the port and starboard gunwales.

An adapted motorization

The aft bathing decks have been reduced to 40 cm to allow the installation of Yamaha High Trust engines, with a strong propeller reduction to facilitate low-speed trolling. The fuel tank has been increased to 600 L to offer more autonomy. The Pyxis Yacht 30 WA Fishing can receive from 2x150 HP up to 2x350 HP but the shipyard recommends a power of 400 HP. As an option, it is also possible to opt for flaps.

As an option, the cockpit can be fitted with a 12-inch Garmin multifunction sounder with a 1 kW transducer (transducer).

Fishing and comfort

The rest of the boat will remain the same, as we will find the foredeck with its large sundeck and its kitchen equipped with a fridge, sink and stove. For if the Pyxis 30 WA Fishing is a top-of-the-range sports fishing boat , it does not forget all the comfort necessary for family cruising.

This model will be available in early 2021 and can already be pre-ordered.

Namely thanks to the extensive development of the hull through 3D modeling, and by prototyping with 5-axis mills and CAM technology to obtain the perfect mix between performance and comfort.

A large and inviting 1.8 meter chaise longue sunbed on the fore-deck is one of many highlights of the P-30wa. Easily reachable thanks to the broad walk-around passages, which ensure optimum fruition and added safety. To aft, behind the backseat, two descents embedded at the transom wrap around the outboard engines. For easy and obstacle-free access to the water.

An L-shaped sofa, with another juxtaposed, in the cockpit offer a great chill-out zone for the full enjoyment of up to eight passengers. Which may also be quickly converted to a cooking and dining setup, or as an extended sunbed. Side deck lockers readily provide all the necessary stowage. A small kitchenette is placed just behind the driver’s seat, complete with encased stove, sink and fridge. Greatly improving socialbility on board, and sharply reducing nuisance traffic between decks during meals.

The P-30 wa’s wide helm console hosts a 12 inch gps-plotter, sonar, compass, vhf, flow-meter, radio, radar, joysticks, and virtually any type of instrument to fully personalize the nav-station. All being readily accessible, and interfaced with the captain’s smart-phone or i-pad. An ample T-top provides great protection from sun and wind. Also supporting navigation lights, solar panel, antennas, up to eight rod holders, and addition custom gear.

A sliding hatch door left of the pilot’s station gives way to the cabin. Below deck the P-30 WA’s stylish tinted portholes provide pleasant and efficient natural lighting, with lots of privacy. While the forward hatch guarantees plenty of ventiliation. The large master forecabin is roomy, elegant, and comfortable.

On starboard the layout includes a spacious and completely enclosed restroom with full-height bulkhead. While on portside there’s a closet area with a useful settee for changing. Plus, a second French-style double berth may also be installed amidship.

Sailboat Slips available on Lake Simcoe

Lagoon City Yacht Club has some slips for use this year (2024). We can accommodate boats up to 32 feet and a 5-foot draft.

We would like to see that all sailors who wish to be out on the water have that opportunity.

Our club is quite small, with 28 slips. Every slip has access to the land and a narrow side tie dock of about 25 feet. Our clubhouse has a beautiful kitchen and newly renovated washrooms. All of our members know each other and extend assistance for many different circumstances - advice, sailing tips, and help with repairs. We have an active social calendar, and casual racing takes place on Fridays, followed by a burger and beer supper. You can view some of the pertinent details on our website, www.lcyc.com.

In addition to the club's amenities, we have access to a beautiful sand beach within walking distance. There are several restaurants in the immediate area, and of course, Orillia is just a 20-minute drive away.

Our fees are reasonable - $1,300 slip fee (pro-rated for the partial season) , senior membership fee of $440, and club initiation fee (which can be made in installments).

Many of our members store their boats at the local marina within walking distance of the club.
