The Incredible Features Of Conor McGregor's $3.6 Million Lamborghini Superyacht

mcgregor in monaco

When superstar UFC fighter Conor McGregor announced to the world that his "Lamborghini yacht is ready" on Instagram, many fans couldn't wait to get the first glimpse of him testing out his lavish new ride on the waters. McGregor, who was the highest-paid athlete in 2021 (via  Forbes ), shelled out $3.6 million for the Lamborghini 63 last year, as first reported by TMZ back in 2020. He has since published many images and videos of the yacht on his Instagram account.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Conor McGregor Official (@thenotoriousmma)

The Lamborghini 63 was built in partnership with the Italian Sea Group Tecnomar, and the model's sleek and futuristic design was inspired by the Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 and older Countach and Miura supercars from the '60s and '70s, according to  Lamborghini . This yacht is a limited edition and only 63 of them were put up for sale. Even though the upscale model has every feature a champion can ever wish for, McGregor reportedly had his yacht specially customized by the Italian sports car manufacturer.

It's known as the Super Car of the Seas

The Lamborghini 63 features a pair of V12 2,000 horsepower engines; it boasts a top speed of 60 knots and a cruising speed of 40 to 45 knots, making it one of the fastest yachts in its class. Usually, a vessel that's capable of reaching these speeds might mean a bumpy ride, but test trials of this super yacht have reportedly shown the opposite. Despite its high speed, cruising on this luxury yacht was described as a smooth experience with almost no vibration by  Robb Report  following a special invitation to check out the ride.

Lamborghini designed this yacht to be the super boat version of its trademark car. The outside of the limited-edition model has a distinctive angular design with Y-shaped lights and the official Lamborghini logo. The companies also used carbon fiber (the same material used to make the cars) and a fiberglass hull to help keep it as light as possible. Carbon fiber is an ideal material to make the yacht as it's reported to be five times stronger than steel , yet still lightweight at the same time. By using it, designers were able to create a boat that is 63 feet in length with a weight of just 24 tons.

The interior is stunning

Whether he's out taking it for a spin in Monaco or cruising with his fiancé Dee Devlin and his children on the French Riviera, this yacht is ideal for a leisurely cruise. One can browse through various photos posted online showing the MMA icon living his best life on his high-class cruiser while showing off the yacht's tricked-out interior. There is a sun pad on deck where McGregor and his fiancé are often pictured relaxing on both of their Instagram accounts, as well as a dinette and galley station on board, as Robb Report had revealed.

One of the Lamborghini 63's coolest features is its dashboard. Unlike other luxury yacht dashboards, the 63's dashboard is a Lambo owner's dream: it's a close replica of the Sian FKP 37, a mid-engine hybrid supercar that was released in 2021. For an avid Lamborghini collector like McGregor, he gets to feel the same luxury while out on the water, too.

It isn't McGregor's only yacht

The Lamborghini isn't the only seafaring vessel Conor McGregor has in his fleet. The notorious MMA star also owns a 150-foot-long superyacht with an incredible number of facilities. According to his tweets , McGregor's superyacht features a bar, lounge area, child-safe sea pool, a climbing wall, and a giant inflatable slide. If the climbing wall and slide weren't outlandish enough, the vessel also has a driving range and "jousting platform."

As far as adding another vessel goes, McGregor might stick to the smaller options. When a fan pointed out a "giga-yacht" may be a bit more than the former UFC champion could afford, McGregor suggested he might be able to buy a giga-yacht one day, but didn't actually want one. He tweeted: "For now, sure. But not forever. That said I rolled into fight island on the giga yacht, there are pros and cons to them. They're almost too big. Marinas can't house them so they are kept at anchor. I like the marina vibe so I think i will go to 70-80 metre max and chill then lol"

McGregor spent a significant amount of time on his larger yacht when he was recovering from a serious leg break at UFC 264. The Irishman hasn't fought since, but he could make a return to the octagon at the end of the year, according to UFC boss Dana White. There have also been rumors of a second fight against boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, or a match against YouTuber Jake Paul.

Conor McGregor just took delivery of one of Tecnomar's Lamborghini 63 yachts

Conor McGregor has a long recuperation period of ahead of him after breaking his leg in his last fight with Dustin Poirier. Luckily for him, he’ll be able to do some of that onboard his lightning-fast new superboat.

The boisterous UFC star showed off his latest luxury toy on social media on Tuesday— Tecnomar’s new Lamborghini 63 motoryacht . The high-performance dayboat doesn’t just bear the name of the famous Italian automaker; it’s been specifically designed to live up to the exacting standards set by its storied supercars.

“My Lamborghini yacht is ready,” McGregor wrote as the caption to a photo of his green Lam-boat being rolled out of the shipyard.

The Lamborghini 63 is a true beast of a motoryacht. It measures 63 feet in length—its name is a reference to this, as well as the year Lamborghini was founded—and is powered by a pair of MAN V-12 diesel engines that produce 2,000 horsepower apiece. Thanks to this, the boat can reach a top speed of 60 knots, making it one of the fastest 63-footers in its class. At the cruising speed of 40 to 45 knots, the yacht burns 100 gallons of fuel per hour, giving it a range of 360 nautical miles.

But there’s more to a supercar than its powertrain, and the same goes for the Italian Sea Group subsidiary’s latest watercraft. The Lamborghini 63 looks just as bold and fierce as the automaker’s current crop of vehicles. Cutting a relatively low profile, it’s got a carbon-fiber superstructure that’s adorned with angular side windows that help create the front and rear hexagonal shape found on almost all of Lamborghini’s cars. The visual references don’t stop there, either. The boat is also painted the same verde gea green as the Sián and features two pilot seats like those found in the Huracán Evo, while the helm is based on the Aventador’s steering wheel. One big difference between the boat and supercars: The 63’s interior is surprisingly spacious, featuring two discrete bedrooms.

Anyone whose ever crossed paths with McGregor’s Instagram account will likely have noticed the fighter’s ravenous appetite for the finer things in life. So it should come as no surprise that he dropped $3.5 million on his new seafaring Lambo. Of course, when you’re getting paid as much as $85 million for a fight, that’s just a drop in the bucket seat.

What do you buy when you’re one of the highest paid combat sports athletes in the world? A 63-foot Lamborghini Technomar super yacht worth more than $3 million, apparently.

Conor McGregor has had a pretty good weekend. He spent his Saturday night watching his friend, Katie Taylor, win a thrilling boxing match against Amanda Serrano, and got a couple of solid potshots off at Jake Paul’s expense in the process. And then on Sunday his limited-edition Lamborghini “ supercar of the sea ” arrived.

Follow along as McGregor takes his new boat for a spin:

The Lamborghini Technomar carries two 4000 horsepower V12 engines that can take the vessel up to 70 miles per hour. It’s also posh as all hell, featuring a fully kitted out kitchen, dining room, bedrooms and bathrooms.

McGregor’s has several custom features — out of the 63 Technomars built, McGregor owns No. 12, a little tribute to his Proper 12 whiskey that largely paid for the thing . It’s also green like the bottles his booze is served in.

McGregor is still recovering from a bad leg break suffered in his third fight against Dustin Poirier in July 2021 ( see it ). While “The Notorious” has staked out a fall 2022 return date and a goal of winning a third UFC title at Welterweight, details are still very shaky until doctors clear him to train fully.

Conor McGregor has been making a splash with his new toy - finally a personalised $4million (£2.91m) Lamborghini ‘super-yacht’.

The former dual-weight UFC champion, whose net worth is believed to be $180million, made the extravagant purchase in July 2021 but has been unable to get behind the wheel of the ‘supercar of the sea' until now.

McGregor has been waiting to take ownership of the yacht for almost a year

After almost a year of waiting, McGregor took to social media over the weekend to let his fans know that his vessel is finally ready and then posted a series of images.

Writing on Instagram, he said: “Today is the day!! We officially take ownership of our brand new Lamborghini Sport Yacht!"

The Irishman then began to flood his account with a series of photos of the yacht and even posted a video of him taking his new toy for a spin during a family trip to Monaco in the south of France.

He then took it for a spin again on Tuesday, posting more pictures.

Introduced in the summer of 2020, the Lamborghini Tecnomar 63 was built by Tecnomar at the Italian Sea Group HQ in Italy, with prices starting at $3.5m (£2.55m).

McGregor is believed to have packed out his yacht with up to $500,000 (£364,230) worth of customisation – mostly featuring his  Proper Twelve branding.

McGregor is loving life behind the wheel of his new toy

The 33-year-old has not competed inside the octagon since he  suffered a fractured tibia and fibula at UFC 264  in July 2021.

McGregor has been healing up ever since and has recently been back in the gym working on his fitness ahead of his eagerly anticipated return to action.

‘Mystic Mac’ has announced his intention to return at welterweight and he  thinks an immediate crack at UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is what awaits  when makes his comeback later this year.

However, that fight seems unlikely with ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ set to defend his 170lb strap against long-time contender Leon Edwards in the summer.

McGregor has previously expressed an interest in fighting for the lightweight title which will be on the line when Charles Oliveira takes on Justin Gaethje at UFC 274 this weekend.

Although, it is currently unclear if the UFC would be willing to grant their biggest star an immediate title shot despite the fact he is currently riding a two-fight losing streak and hasn't won a fight at 155lbs since 2016.

Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is a very special limited edition of yachts. The number ’63’ is attached to the name to honour the company’s foundation in 1963. Only 63 editions of this particular model were made available for the public to buy.

As per a report , McGregor apparently spent $4 million to buy the yacht. He also spent an additional $500,000 to customize it to his taste.

Being able to afford such expensive items is not much of a problem for Conor McGregor. He is reportedly worth $200 million according to CelebrityNetWorth . He also became the highest-paid athlete of 2021 over the likes of Canelo Alvarez, Cristiano Ronaldo and Leonel Messi. McGregor often posts pictures of his yacht and he loves spending time in the sea.

However, this is not the only ridiculously expensive item under his name. Following his loss to Dustin Poirier in UFC 257, Conor bought a watch from UAE that was worth $ 1 million. He also owns many supercars that he often takes out on the roads of Dublin.

Conor McGregor’s rise to the top of the UFC

Conor McGregor is the richest Mixed Martial Artist of all time. Hailing from Crumlin, Dublin, The Notorious made his MMA debut in 2008. He became a two-division champion in Cage Warriors. It perfectly laid out the foundation for him to join the UFC in 2013. He defeated Marcus Brimage on his UFC debut via TKO in the very first round.

It did not take him much time to start climbing the ladder to the top of the division. McGregor went on to beat Dustin Poirier, Max Holloway, Chad Mendes and Jose Aldo amongst others in his 7-fight win streak in the UFC. But more than his impeccable record, Conor’s brash personality and his smooth mic skills swept the audience off their feet. It resulted in more and more revenue for the UFC as well. As a result, a Conor McGregor fight card became the most sought after event in the UFC.

Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather

Needless to say, the more the audiences bought Pay Per Views (PPVs) featuring him in the headline, the richer he became. Conor’s foray into the Octagon against Jose Aldo reportedly sold 1.4 million PPVs. He soon became a crossover star as McGregor became the very first MMA fighter to fight Floyd Mayweather in the boxing ring. It became the biggest payday of his career. McGregor reportedly made $130 million for his boxing debut. The event also became the second highest-selling PPV of all time with a reported 4.3 million PPV sales. The same report stated that the event generated a revenue of $600 million.

Following that mega event in 2017, Conor McGregor created another UFC record in 2018. His feud with former UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov generated 2.4 million PPV buys. It is the highest-selling UFC/MMA PPV to date. McGregor has sold 9 PPVs exceeding 1 million buys in his career so far.

Conor McGregor vs Khabib Nurmagomedov

Conor has always excelled in the business side of things as well. During his press tour in 2018, McGregor launched his own brand of whiskey called ‘Proper 12’ ahead of his fight against Khabib at UFC 229. It was a monster success and he sold the brand in 2021 for a reported amount of $600 million.

When will Conor McGregor fight next?

Earlier, reports suggested that Conor McGregor may very well fight in the summer of 2022. Conor himself was eyeing a return for the international fight week. But UFC president Dana White later clarified that the 33-year-old will not make his comeback until the last quarter of the year. Conor suffered a horrific injury during his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. Hence, Dana White’s concerns regarding Conor’s full fitness are justified.

As for an opponent for his comeback fight, Conor McGregor is not lacking in options. During UFC 274, both Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler expressed their wish to fight him. McGregor previously stated interest in fighting the UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman as well. On top of that, he has the option to fight Nate Diaz and Dustin Poirier whenever he wants to due to their pre-existing history.

Who do you think Conor McGregor will fight upon his return? Will he face Charles Oliveira for the vacant 155lbs championship? Or a bout against Michale Chandler seems the most logical next step for him? Let us know your pick in the comments down below.

Conor McGregor and his yacht.

Conor McGregor’s yacht caught our eye recently and we’ve been keen to get a closer look – and the not-at-all shy MMA legend has delivered.

McGregor has been hanging out in glitzy Monaco for the Formula 1 Grand Prix .

And he’s been blasting around on his $4 million Lamborghini yacht because… that’s the kind of things celebrities do in Monaco.

McGregor posted a video on Tuesday aboard the Lamborghini Tecnomar 63 yacht as it skims over the calm blue waters off Monte Carlo.

The video shows McGregor sitting in the center console with his thumb on the throttle and the other hand on the Lamborghini steering wheel.

It gives us a closer look at the angular dashboard that could easily belong inside a Lamborghini .

And you can just catch a glimpse of the unmistakable “start & stop” button. The yacht has one for each of its 2000HP engines.

They are exactly the same ones that you would find in a Lamborghini.

The cockpit of the Lamborghini Tecnomar yacht.

What we know about Conor McGregor’s yacht

The Tecnomar 63 is inspired by the Lamborghini Sián FKP 37, the hybrid super sports car (check out our video with the Sián a bit further down this page).

The hardtop roof is made to look like those on Lamborghini’s roadster models and not only gives you some shade from the sun, but also adds aerodynamic performance.

McGregor calls his yacht “the supercar of the sea” and he waited about a year after ordering for it to be ready with his custom features.

CHECK THIS OUT!

It’s got about $500,000 of bespoke options on it.

Built in Italy by Tecnomar, the Lambo yacht starts at an already pricey $3.5 million.

Here are the key specs:

  • Two V12 bi-turbo 2000HP engines
  • Top speed of 60 knots (111km/h, 69mph)
  • Can travel 389km (210 nautical miles) at a speed of 40 knots (75km/h)
  • Length – 20m (63ft)

The Conor Mcgregor yacht on the water.

Stefano Domenicali, chairman and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, said the Tecnomar yacht was “the essence of both organizations’ style and expertise”.

“If I had to imagine a Lamborghini on water, this would be my vision. I’m delighted to celebrate this successful collaboration,” he said.

How can Conor McGregor afford a Lamborghini yacht?

The former UFC champ is not shy of a few bucks.

Forbes says he was the 35th highest-paid athlete for 2022 with an income of $43 million.

It’s actually a big drop year-on-year because in 2021,  McGregor was number one on that list after raking in $180 million .

That was mainly from his sale of whiskey brand Proper No. Twelve.

So that’s how McGregor can buy a Lamborghini yacht.

Lamborghini lm002: looking back at the ‘rambo lambo’.

You’ve probably already seen some of the coolest cars from the 2024 New York Auto Show , but there’s one celebrity-owned machine that deserves some extra attention: Michael Strahan’s 1990 Lamborghini LM002. In a world mad for SUVs and at a show a little light on exotica, the V-12 powered truck best known as the “Rambo Lambo” would stand out even if it weren’t fire engine red. For many show goers, it’ll be the first time they’ve ever seen one.

Michael Strahan's 1990 Lamborghini LM002 is one of three he's owned. The chrome bumpers and huge OZ ... [+] Racing wheels mark it out as an LM/American-spec trim.

The LM002 is a mysterious beast, and it illustrates how truly exotic Lamborghinis were when it was new. Just 301 were made in eight years, which is less than a month of Urus production today. The people who owned them new were often equally exotic. What do Malcolm Forbes, Tina Turner, Keke Rosberg, Sylvester Stallone and Muammar Gadaffi have in common? They all bought LM002s.

NFL star-turned-TV-personality Strahan is just slightly too young to have bought one brand new (he was in college when production wound down), but he’s a serious car connoisseur. In addition to a host of obscure exotics like a De Tomaso Guara, he’s owned three LM002s.

Strahan’s trio of display cars (the others a La Ferrari and a Tedson Daydream, an electrified Porsche 911) also happened to be exactly where Lamborghini’s own stand was at the Javits Center back in 1990. That being the case, it seemed like a good time to re-tell just how the Italian company came to build this bonkers SUV in the first place.

The Lamborghini Cheetah (foreground), is the original prototype that later spawned the production ... [+] LM002 (behind). In 1977, it could off-road at 105 mph.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, the cheetah and bankruptcy.

The LM002’s “Rambo Lambo” nickname, derived in part from its association with Stallone, is well-deserved. Its unmistakable shape is a visual of brute force; it has all the ingredients of off-road invincibility including tires designed for sand running. That’s all thanks to the fact that this machine sprang from repeated attempts to build a military off-roader.

The story begins in 1977 with a vehicle called the Cheetah, a collaboration between U.S.-based Mobile Technology International (MTI) and Lamborghini, then owned by Swiss businessmen Georges-Henri Rossetti and René Leimer. At first, it was an idea for a new U.S. Army all-purpose off-roader. At the time, the U.S. Army’s vehicles were fairly dated, and in 1979 the Army announced an RFP for a proper new all-purpose truck to replace its collection of aging Jeeps.

In the end, that vehicle became AM General’s HMMWV (Humvee). But before that could happen, MTI was one of many prospective companies bidding to impress the Department of Defense (DoD). Rodney Pharis, MTI’s American boss, designed the Cheetah, powered by a mid-mounted Chrysler V8, which was to be produced by Lamborghini.

At the time, Lamborghini was struggling. After Italy’s economy began a long contraction, his tractor business floundered, and OPEC destroyed sales of fuel-hungry sports cars, founder Ferruccio Lamborghini sold off his businesses one by one. Rossetti and Leimer were left with empty factory space and financial coffers, and building the Cheetah could help fill both. Automobili Lamborghini’s need for cash led to a similar deal with BMW to build its M1 supercar.

If the company could get these products into production, it could then get more government funding to tide it over. There was still plenty of interest in Lamborghini’s cars at the time, but it didn’t have the funds to build them in large numbers or necessarily certify them for sale in the U.S., the largest market for such vehicles.

The Cheetah had many flaws, however. Its mid-mounted Chrysler V8 made for poor balance, and one of the other RFP participants sued the company, alleging that the Cheetah had copied its design. But its biggest problems were the Italian factory and a lack of capital. The DoD required U.S. manufacture and Lamborghini just didn’t have the resources to put the Cheetah into production. Both projects went nowhere and, after BMW refused a request for a loan, the company went bankrupt in 1978.

Lamborghini Mimran, Lamborghini Militare

Since nobody wanted to preside over the end of the company, the Italian Government, Rossetti and Leimer worked hard to find new owners. They found them in 1980, in the unlikely form of French brothers Jean-Claude and Patrick Mimran, who invested $3 Million and arrived at the factory in 1981.

The brothers, both under 40 with no car experience, were heirs to a Franco-African sugar cane fortune. The two would run Lamborghini for a probationary period of three years, and only then would they buy the firm. Fortunately, the Mimrans proved highly adept managers, launching the Jalpa, modernizing the Countach, increasing sales and salvaging what they could from the Cheetah.

Largely shepherded by younger brother Patrick, the Cheetah was redesigned into the LM001 prototype in 1981, now with a rear-mounted American Motors V8. The rear-engine idea didn’t handle any better, so it was redesigned again into the LM002 prototype, with a front-mounted Countach V12 and a new tube-frame chassis. All of these prototypes were four-wheel drive, and they were all meant for the kind of desert dune bashing one might associate with a Humvee or today’s Ford F-150 Raptor .

When the LM002 prototype broke cover at the 1982 Geneva show, there were rumors of a Saudi military order, but no Army ever did end up taking delivery. Instead, the truck went through another round of major engineering changes and bowed as a high-end exotic SUV at the 1986 Brussels show.

The LM002 went into production in 1986, packing a 455-horsepower V12. It's seen here at the 1989 ... [+] Toronto Motor Show. (Photo by Rick Eglinton/Toronto Star via Getty Images)

Building The Lamborghini LM002

While no military buyers were ever serious about it, in the LM002 the company had created a wild PR machine. It had the heart of a Countach, the capability of a Humvee, and was arguably more exotic than either. Even today, it’s quite disconcerting to hear one running. SUVs usually make deep bass sounds from torquey engines, and the Giotto Bizzarini-designed Lamborghini V12 is a comparatively high-pitched symphony.

It could supposedly run over just about any terrain, and its specially-designed Pirelli Scorpion tires could be deflated and handle desert conditions. Lamborghini’s 700-horsepower marine-spec V12 (often seen in exotic Riva powerboats) was an option if the regular 455-horsepower version didn’t have enough power for prospective buyers, and it came with a 45-gallon gas tank. Its interior was functional, but buyers could have any ultra-luxe fittings they wanted.

LM002s were popular in the Middle East (the very first was delivered to King Hassan II of Morocco), but exceedingly rare almost everywhere else, which only contributed to their mystique. By the time volume production had begun, the Mimrans had sold Lamborghini to Lee Iacocca’s Chrysler in 1987. Since the LM002 was a slow-selling, virtually hand-built machine, the new owners didn’t change it very much over time.

The truck (most LM002s are pickups with very short beds, though some wagon-bodied versions were built to special order) continued in production until 1993.

Technically speaking, almost all LM002s are pickup trucks with a tiny little bed and jump seats in ... [+] back, but a few were made with custom SUV wagon bodies.

Whatever Happened To The LM002?

By 1992 Chrysler was actively seeking to offload Lamborghini. A global recession and a bit too much absentee landlording had seen its value shrink despite launching the Diablo supercar in 1990.

The LM002 was out of the picture by the time Chrysler found a buyer, a Bermudan company named Megatech that acted as a front for Indonesian buyer Tommy Suharto (son of former President Suharto). The company struggled on until 1998, when it was finally bought by Audi (and, by extension, the Volkswagen Group).

VW’s management turned Lamborghini into a highly profitable seller of volume-production exotics, but it did not build another SUV until 2018’s Urus, which is a horse of a very different color than the LM002.

Meanwhile, Strahan became an NFL Hall of Famer and bought his first LM002 while he was still playing. He soon sold it, a move he instantly regretted, and later replaced it with the two he owns today.

Perhaps appropriately, he grew up partly on European military bases just around the time the Humvee was coming into service and learned to drive on Germany’s Autobahns. He’s been into unusual enthusiast machinery ever since and has often remarked on what a unique experience the LM002 is, a big four-wheel drive, five-speed truck with that high-strung engine.

Today, LM002s can fetch half a million dollars at auction, and given their extreme rarity it’s unlikely you’ll ever see one in traffic. But you can catch Strahan’s at the Jacob Javits Convention Center until April 7.

The unspoken rules about how to behave on a superyacht

  • The superyachting world is very small, with only 5,800 yachts longer than 30 meters at sea.
  • That insularity has bred a specific etiquette, which is often hard for outsiders to know about.
  • These are the de facto rules of the most expensive billionaire toys, superyachts .

Insider Today

For the owners of superyachts , privacy is often the most valuable thing money can buy. It's one reason centimillionaires and billionaires pay eight or nine figures for a palace at sea, far from the prying eyes of land dwellers.

Even the most gossipy crew members should stay tight-lipped about the name of a former owner or charter guest, and many brokers shy away from answering benign questions.

That means that, aside from basic safety guidelines, most of the rules of superyachting are unwritten. The very few who need to know them — there are only about 5,800 yachts longer than 30 meters at sea, according to SuperYacht Times — already know them.

But if you do happen to be a lucky guest at a party on a billionaire's $500 million ship or find yourself included in a $1 million-a-week vacation, there are a few things you need to know.

After four days of touring superyachts that sell for as much as $75 million and chatting with the people who buy, sell, and work on them at the Palm Beach International Boat Show , Business Insider gleaned a few key edicts. Given the discreet nature of the industry, almost all the people we spoke with requested anonymity to protect their working relationships, but here's what they had to say.

Take off your shoes

While it's a basic rule for anyone in boating, it may come as a surprise to an outsider that no matter how rich you are or how expensive your heels are, in the vast majority of cases, you can't wear shoes on board.

It's partly for safety — you don't want anyone slipping on a wet deck — but partly to keep the yacht clean. So expect to see barefoot billionaires, and if you forgot to get a pedicure, bring a set of special boat shoes.

Don't make any assumptions about money — but know the signs

In the superyacht world, it's safe to assume almost everyone you meet is very, very rich, and many brokers and builders say you can't judge a book by its cover when it comes to prospective clients.

"It has nothing to do with how they're dressed," one broker told BI. "It's the biggest mistake you can make because a complete slobby-looking guy or couple could be a multibillionaire."

There are, however, a few clues. Watches are one; new footwear is another.

"Rich people always have new shoes," a superyacht expert said. But because of the shoe rule mentioned above, this tip probably applies only when they're on land.

Book your massage early

Wellness areas, including spa rooms with a massage bed or two and a professional-grade facial machine, are becoming must-haves on superyachts . Most have a customized spa menu and a crew member who doubles as a trained masseuse or beautician — and they're usually in high demand.

One captain said he'd implemented a booking system to ensure people weren't fighting for the same spots. A broker said sometimes masseuses would be so busy they wouldn't leave the small spa cabin for hours on end.

Related stories

So if you want to make the most of your relaxing time on board, reserve your pampering slot as soon as you get your welcome cocktail.

Pirates are more real than you'd think, and many superyachts have hidden safe rooms

While you might dress up as a fake pirate for an onboard theme party, there are very real ones — and other dangers — on the high seas.

In certain areas, including parts of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, pirates are a cause of concern . In the Red Sea, owners are concerned about the Houthis .

Superyachts can come equipped with sonic weaponry, lockdown systems, and anti-drone protection. Builders are even designing safe rooms — which are apparently just as plush as the rest of the ship.

The longer the boat, the closer to $1 billion

While you can't judge a buyer based on appearances, you can judge them on the length of their boat.

One rule of thumb: If someone has a brand-new 50-meter vessel, chances are they have $1 billion to their name. If it's over 100 meters, expect the owner to have at least $2 billion. And for a boat bigger than that — like Jeff Bezos' 127-meter megayacht Koru — it takes many, many billions.

Money can't buy you everything

The world's biggest, most expensive yachts are custom-built by shipyards that produce only a handful of boats a year.

But no matter how many tens of millions of dollars clients are spending, there are things to which builders will refuse to say yes.

"In the end, the boat has our name," an executive from one of the world's biggest shipyards told BI.

They recalled a client who requested a yellow hull to match his Lamborghini . The shipyard declined, steering the client in another direction.

"If I don't like it, I don't build it. I finalize two or three contracts a year," another builder said. "If somebody can say your vessel is ugly, my reputation is bad."

Yacht crews are trained to make the impossible possible. A guest requests fresh caviar flown into the middle of the Caribbean? No problem. Fresh flowers every day while at sea? It'll cost you, but it can be done.

But they can't time travel, and captains and crew members say the thing that causes the most friction is when a client or owner wants to go from point A to point B — right now.

"The hardest request is when they want the boat in a place — yesterday," one captain said.

The best person to know? A friend with a superyacht

Superyachts are expensive to build and expensive to maintain . According to the industry standard, owning a superyacht will cost 10% of its new-build price annually. For a $100 million yacht, that's at least $10 million yearly going to crew, regular maintenance, insurance, fuel, and dockage.

Chartering, too, is costly . Beyond the list price, which can be hundreds of thousands a week, guests must pay for provisions, which are pegged at 35% of the charter fee, and are expected to tip between 10% and 20%.

So the most important unspoken rule of superyachting is actually that the only thing better than owning a superyacht is knowing someone else who does — and invites you along, of course.
