About The Pelican Yacht Club - Fort Pierce, Florida

We just celebrated our 75th year of outstanding tradition.

You can enjoy all that, and more - Dancing, Entertainment, Bridge, Swimming, Health and Fitness Center and, of course, boating and fishing - at the Pelican Yacht Club.

Founded in 1946 by Frank Rowell and Robert Gladwin, with land and buildings purchased from the U.S. Navy, and with generous donations of labor and materials from members and local businesses, the Club caters to the boating and fishing interests of its members.

A swimming pool, new dining room, and other facilities were added over the next two decades. Then, after a devastating fire in 1988, the club was completely rebuilt. In January, 1993, Pelican became an equity ownership club.

Today it offers an elegant, world-class Clubhouse in an unrivaled location on the Fort Pierce Inlet from the Atlantic Ocean. From a dining perspective, enjoy excellent cuisine in a beautiful and spacious dining room that affords a view of spectacular sunsets over the Indian River Lagoon. Of course, the desirable inlet location allows the club a superb Marina and boating facilities. Swimming, Health & Fitness facilities and many social events and entertainment are also available.

Sailfish Records Torched At Pelican Yacht Club Event

A wild and woolly week for fishing!

What a wild, wet and woolly week it was for the fleet fishing the Pelican Yacht Club Invitational Billfish Tournament out of Fort Pierce, Fla. Jan. 9-12.

First, the fleet of 30 fishing teams crushed all the records for the 39th annual tournament, and for the 65-year history of sailfish tournaments fished in eastern Florida waters.

The final tally was 969 sailfish caught and released.

The tournament’s second day of action wound up being the single best day in sailfish tournament history for any event fished north of Palm Beach County in waters of the Atlantic Ocean. A total of 712 sailfish were caught and released by the 27 boats on the water that day. The top three boats that day accounted for 121 sailfish by themselves — JT, led by Capt. Mark McDevitt, had 41 sailfish; Cowpoke, led by Capt. Mike Brady, had 40 sailfish; Alikai, led by Capt. Patrick Price, had 40 sailfish. The 41 by JT, owned by David Johnson of Beach Haven, N.J., stands as the new record for the tournament for a boat in a single day.

Consider also that tournament rules stipulate fishing time as 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. But since the boat departed Fort Pierce Inlet each day, and the sailfish were concentrated in an area north of Patrick Air Force Base and south of Port Canaveral’s main channel some 45-50 miles north, tournament boats were forced to sacrifice up to 1:45 of fishing time each day just to reach the best fishing.

But when they did, they were rewarded, at least for two days.

The event began Jan. 9 when Grand Slam, led by Capt. David Grubbs of New Smyrna Beach, sat down on an area so packed with hungry sailfish that it looked like a feeding frenzy under his boat. Grubbs felt it was going to yield some fish, and ran there because he knew it would produce bites. Few, if any, in the fleet knew his plan. By noon, the cat was out of the bag. Big time.

He wound up with a Treasure Coast area then single-day record 38 sailfish catches that day and a substantial lead on his competitors, known to be some of the best sailfish skippers in the western hemisphere.

Teams racked up catches of an incredible 86 double-headers, 45 triples and 15 quads.

It was truly staggering.

Jan. 10, the fleet followed the leader, Grubbs and crew, to the fertile fishing grounds off the Space Coast and helped him achieve something many experienced sailfish specialists thought could only be accomplished in Mexico or Costa Rica.

The captains called it epic and incredible, unbelievable and amazing.

But it wouldn’t last. Jan. 11, the fish had either scattered a bit, moved back north out of range, or simply quit biting, like fish of any species do. The fleet of 27 fishing that day picked up “just” 93 releases. Saturday, with a smaller fleet fishing because of lay days mandated by tournament rules, those numbers dwindled more. The final day anglers tallied only 29 releases, reminiscent of the season’s start in December when sailfish bites were very hard to come by.

Florida’s Record-Breaking Sailfish Bite

  • By Marlin Staff
  • Updated: February 26, 2019

Once again, the planet’s best winter sailfish bite has come out of the Sunshine State. In May 2018, Marathon, Florida, racked up ridiculous release numbers when a series of hydrometeorological and biological events created a come-one-come-all sailfish scenario in the Florida Keys for the few boats who were lucky enough to read the signs. A similar situation must have occurred off the coast of Cape Canaveral during the 39th annual Pelican Yacht Club Invitational Billfish Tournament this past January when a total of 969 sails were released in just four days — 712 of them on the second day — breaking records by the handful. Capt. David Grubbs’s 73-fish tournament broke Capt. Scott Fawcett’s 2012 record of 57. Grubbs and the commercial kingfish fleet were credited for locating the biomass. This is the story of that incredible event.

Capt. David Grubbs, Grand Slam

First Place — 73 releases

We had been to Fort Pierce a few days prior to the tournament to pre-fish, but it was slow. My boss had some guests in, so knowing there were some fish around home, we took the boat back up to New Smyrna to catch his friends a few.

We fished north of where the fish should have been, but we saw nothing. On the day of the captain’s meeting, we ran the boat back to Fort Pierce, looking around the Cape where some other boats had been seeing them. I saw a few free jumpers, so I marked the area on my machine, figuring that would be a good place to start on Day One. I thought the fish laid up there, but I never expected what was to come.

There were no tournament boundaries and everyone was scattered. It was rough, so I ran north, tight to the beach and then another 20 miles offshore to get a tolerable angle on my waypoint from the day before. There is a lot of area to cover up here, and the fish can be anywhere.

I got to the mark and made my first down-sea tack; I saw nothing and turned up sea. Still nothing. On the second turn down sea, we raised and caught one, so I stayed there. I was so far from the fleet I couldn’t hear anything on the radio, but at 11:30 a.m. I got a call from Mike Brady on the Cowpoke .

I knew if I broadcasted my position I’d eventually be converged on, and it was a tournament, so I told him: “We are where you and I fished together last time.” Over the course of the next few hours, five or six other boats showed up and the fishing remained good.

The next day I went back to the same spot. We stayed on the southern end of that 5-mile area and caught 33. That was the same day JT got their daily record-breaking 41. It was so rough that even though we were raising them, keeping them tight was tough.

Day Three was like a light switch had been turned off. Goose managed 21 for the daily — inshore of the previous day and even possibly further north. We got two releases to end the tournament, having to lay the last day. This was the best sailfishing I had ever seen in this area, and we ended up winning with 73 releases — beating my personal best of 41 for 60 on my old charter boat in the early 2000s.

Capt. Mike Brady, Cowpoke

Second Place — 66 releases

There had been a lot of coverage Fort Pierce to Miami in the weeks before the tournament. We wanted to fish Day One, and were hoping someone in the fleet would find fish.

Grubbs got a report from the king mackerel fishermen, saying they were hooking sails on their drone spoons. He didn’t tell anyone about the reports he received, but I knew on our way out the first day that he wasn’t going up there for nothing.

I followed Grand Slam , setting up 12 miles south of them. We picked up and ran toward him when we heard he was catching, setting up a mile and a half below. A little after noon, I was on an up-sea tack when we got a sail bite on the prospect. When I turned down sea, I took a look at my right dredge and saw eight or 10 fish in it; I glanced at my left dredge and saw the exact same thing. The only words I could muster were: “I think we found ’em, boys.” We raised an additional 35 fish, releasing 24 for 45 with only four anglers, leaving many hungry fish behind the boat.

On Day Two, everyone went north, because the bite was some 45 miles east of Pelican Flats off Canaveral in the deep water. It was rougher than the day before, blowing northwest more than 20 knots, so many boats didn’t get there until well after 10:30 a.m. We were off to a slow start, but got above everyone else and were marking lots of fish. We stayed out of the fleet, on a stretch of water all to ourselves, going 40 for 65 bites, even with all our sancochos.

We laid on Day Three, but the Viking 72 Goose found some fish even more north in 90 feet and ended up with the daily. The body of fish had moved down, but no one made it offshore, getting sucked into the shallow Goose report. By Day Four, we only needed nine fish to win. Grand Slam was fished out, but unfortunately everything slowed down. We did end up seeing six or seven fish, although they were very lethargic and not eating. How does it go from JT catching 41 to none? Just crazy fishing, I guess. We ended up with 66 releases for the tournament.

Capt. Josh Chaney, Champagne Lady

Third Place — 58 releases

After the Gold Cup’s slow fishing, I wasn’t expecting anything to change. On the first day I started at the 500 line, but didn’t see a single fish. I could barely hear Grubbs on the VHF, so I call Brady and he said he thought he had Grand Slam on the radar. After we hear them catch a quad, we immediately stopped fishing and charged directly into the 7-foot north head sea for an hour and a half. They were there.

By the time I turned around on a flopper at 12:54 p.m., we hooked a quad and we didn’t even have the second rigger laid out. Out of 30 bites that afternoon, we caught 18 — every encounter being a multiple. You would hook four, look behind you and there would be at least 25 fish in the turn, with four or five on each dredge. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

The entire fleet lined up on Day Two waiting for the cannon to go off, arriving at least an hour after lines in. No one cared because we all knew the fish would be there.

First flat line out and there he is. We caught 36 that day. It was the best fishing I’d seen since Bone Shaker won the Stuart Light Tackle tournament in 1997. Twenty-seven boats fishing the same stretch of water, fish jumping everywhere, every boat hooked up. There were so many fish and we were fishing so close together; if you got cut off, it didn’t matter. It was awesome.

On the third day we ended up another 10 miles north, going four for 16. Anyone could have caught up to us, but we held at 58. Fifty-eight sails and you get third, that’s nuts. The Pelican was a great end to our season, placing in every tournament we fished. Brady and Grubbs are my heroes. I’m lucky to be able to compete with, and fish beside them. —By Capts. David Grubbs, Mike Brady and Josh Chaney, as told to Capt. Jen Copeland

Wrapped Up's 8 sailfish leads after first day of Pelican Yacht Club Invitational

pelican yacht club sailfish

Sometimes, when everyone is going left, it pays to go right.

Wednesday, on the first day of fishing during the Pelican Yacht Club Billfish Invitational, the conventional wisdom among many in the competing fleet was that sailfish were to the north.

Here it was early January, and until now in the 2019-2020 sailfish season, no boat had really enjoyed great sailfish action. Perhaps the migratory body of sailfish had not yet moved south into the Treasure Coast?

So as the boats departed Fort Pierce Inlet early Wednesday morning, they turned north one by one to make the long run to find the schools of sailfish.

Except one.

Wrapped Up, a 61-foot Spencer owned by Chris Lazarra of Palm Beach and skippered by Capt. Patrick Price of Jensen Beach, turned south after clearing the rocky jetties. Price pointed the big boat in the opposite direction, knowing his gutsy move could very well result in him being a hero, or a zero.

Right stuff

Turning right, as it turned out, was the right stuff.

Wrapped Up wound up with a fleet-high eight sailfish catches, giving the team its first daily award in six days of Treasure Coast sailfish tournament fishing this season.

Lazarra's angling teammates Lach Chestham, John Caz and Eric Walden reeled in the catches on a day where the fish did not come up in multiples. Crew men Marshall Busha and Dave Dalfo kept lines clear and hooks baited.

The fleet of 22 boats combined to catch and release 53 sailfish. North winds buffeted the teams as the day went on, indicating rough seas are on the way Thursday and possibly through the remainder of the tournament.

Kateric led by Capt. Don Cartwright and fished by anglers Nick Tanionos, Brian Demille and William Dotter stands second with seven sailfish releases. Lo Que Sea (6), Cowpoke (5) and InTents (4) are next in the standings.

The tournament fishes through Saturday, but teams must choose one day as a lay day.

Some will probably try to sit out the week's roughest weather day, but the way the forecast is shaping up, it may be difficult to tell which one that is. Seas up to 8 and 9 feet are likely each day.

More: Get Grubbs! Record-setting sailfish tournament fleet will try to thwart one captain's five-peat

Gone Grubbs

The rough seas already have been blamed for a smaller fleet this week than was anticipated. Grand Slam owned by Wallis Higginbotham of New Smyrna Beach and skippered by Capt. David Grubbs pulled out Tuesday after evaluating the weather forecast.

The move ended the team's chance to record an unheard of five-peat in this tournament, having won the past four consecutive years.

Price said the decision to not follow the crowd was based on recent reports.

"We've been charter fishing and we've been seeing a decent number of sailfish," said Price, owner and operator of DayMaker charters out of Sailfish Marina in Stuart.

"Yesterday, I heard V.J. (Bell, another Stuart charter captain) and another boat both did pretty well fishing just off Stuart."

Headin' south

Price had heard some of the Fort Pierce boats had caught a few sailfish to the north while practicing, but he knew of others that came up empty.

"To me, it sounded like running north was kind of a crap shoot," Price said.

Lazarra was glad Price did what he did.

"We made a right when everybody else made a left," Lazarra said. "We had a slow morning, but about 10:30 it turned on and we started picking away. We had a couple of singles, a double and grinded it out. It worked well for us."

As for strategy and lay days, Price said he came into the tournament planning to fish the first three days straight.

"Right now, we're sticking with that plan," he said.

Most of Price's action was between the St. Lucie Inlet and the Loran Tower Ledge in 130 feet of water.

"We had a little bit of action, and I'm glad to have it," he said.

Showtime! Capt. Jon Meade said his team's three sailfish were caught out in front of Fort Pierce Inlet.

"We had six bites and saw two more, but they were fickle fish," Meade said. "They wouldn't stay behind the dredge very long. Pat had a great day. It might get interesting down there, though, Thursday. The Silver Sailfish Derby (out of Palm Beach) is fishing its first day and they have like 50 boats. They might be in there where Pat was."

Scoring can be followed in real time on the Pelican Yacht Club Billfish Invitational app available for Apple or Android.
