The all-new Princess X80 will be the second member of the X Class ‘Superfly’ family. She has a ‘super flybridge’ which offers over 30% more useful interior space on board than a traditional flybridge yacht of its length. Available with an optional master stateroom on the main deck with a privately owned sundeck, the X80’s adventure capabilities offer the opportunity to explore cruising areas further afield with the option of a large 8,800 liter tank.

The Princess X80 brings the outside in through the maximization of glazing that flows the entire length of the main deck and envelops the saloon, galley and forward dining area. The use of a light and innovative design continues below deck where 8 guests are accommodated in 4 en-suite staterooms, a main beam master stateroom amidships, a forward guest stateroom, a starboard double guest cabin and a port double cabin. Behind the main accommodation is the crew quarters which can accommodate 3 crew members with the standard layout. Life aboard the X80 is really different from other boats of its size.

Princess Yachts’ Superpowered X80

Superheroes come in all shapes and sizes, and with different powers, such as super speed and teleportation. While the Princess X80 can’t turn back time by reversing the planet’s rotation, it does have some superpowers of its own. The newest and second entry in the X Class is characterized by what the British builder calls a “super flybridge.” That, combined with a reported 31-knot top hop and an optional 2,324-gallon fuel tank, means the X80 can actually teleport its owner and guests to another world.

Atop the “super flybridge”—which Princess says has more than 30 percent more space compared with other flybridge yachts of this length—there are four gathering spaces. Aft, there are two stern-facing L-shaped settees with two coffee tables (the portside sofa can also face forward). Forward in the portside corner, there is another L-shaped settee accompanied by four free-standing chairs surrounding a dining table. A wet bar is to starboard.

Moving inside, there is a sofa to starboard and a single centerline helm seat forward, with companion seating to port. Forward on the flybridge, there are two sun pads that can hold three guests each.

The main deck is dedicated to socializing, with a forward-facing C-shaped settee and a folding teak dining table in the cockpit. In the salon, an L-shaped settee and a coffee table are to port. An additional, smaller sofa is to starboard, with a 55-inch TV abaft it.

The galley is forward and to starboard. Here, there are Miele appliances, including a four-burner cooktop, a microwave/convection oven and grill, a full-height fridge, a freezer, a dishwasher and an ice maker atop wood soles. An additional dining space can be found forward of the galley, along with an L-shaped settee and free-standing chairs. There is also a day head on the main deck, located to port and across from the galley.

Accommodations belowdecks are for eight guests in four en suite staterooms. The master stateroom is amidships and full-beam, with a vanity to port and a sofa to starboard. Its head and the closet are abaft a double berth, mitigating noise from the engine room. Forward of the master are a twin-berth guest stateroom to port, a double-berth  guest stateroom to starboard and a forepeak VIP. An optional main-deck master comes with a private sun deck.

Princess X80 review: What we learned from our exclusive sea trial test

When the Princess X95 first hit the water in 2020, it certainly wasn’t quiet about it. With its confrontational elevation, fulsome forward superstructure and full-length ‘super flybridge’, it didn’t just feel like a radical tangent from the gentlemanly motor yachts of the Princess Y Class.

It felt like a radical tangent from the rest of the players in its sector. But while the upright trawler-cum-expedition aesthetic was challenging for some, the fact that it delivered around 30% more volume than most boats of a comparable length won it a lot of fans.

Couple that with the fact that it was able to integrate some authentic superyacht -style luxuries into a sub-100ft platform and a couple of things became inevitable. Firstly, it would go on to sell extremely well, shifting more than 30 units in just three years. And secondly, Princess Yachts would attempt to transfer that same winning concept onto a more compact X Class model.

The smaller boat’s approach to the X Class ethos differs markedly from that of its big sister. In spite of the fact that it measures 13ft shorter and 2ft narrower, it replaces the full-beam superstructure with a more conventional walkaround main deck layout.

That of course narrows the main deck accommodation but it still employs an extraordinarily long superstructure with an inverted screen for maximum volume. More to the point, it makes best possible use of that volume by side-stepping a main deck helm station and using the space instead for a forward dining area, that can also be specified as a second master cabin , in addition to a permanent port day heads and a versatile starboard galley.

The impact of all that is not to be underestimated. The fact that you have a proper main deck day heads enables every one of the four lower deck cabins to retain its own private ensuite facilities for the sole use of those guests.

The galley meanwhile can be integrated with the main saloon space by means of a set of stools at the bar; or it can be cordoned off for extra guest privacy thanks to a push-button screen, while still retaining easy access to the starboard side deck through a pantograph door.

And ahead of all this, the fact that you get the option of a main deck forward cabin with vast sea views and private access to the bow dinette feels like an item from the aspirational wishlist of a much larger custom superyacht.

Over recent years there has been a quiet revolution in the methods used to design a Princess hull. Years of experience building fast and seaworthy hulls are now complemented by cutting edge simulation techniques. For the X80, this approach has led to efficiencies across the speed range whilst ensuring the highest levels of seakeeping and predictable handling. Fitted with twin MAN V12 1900’s the X80 will reach speeds up to 30 knots.

The stature of the X80 profile is defined through the increased height of the bulwarks, topsides and enclosed wheelhouse. Her ‘S’ shaped canopy flows into the flybridge deck to balance the visual weight and disguise the volume of the expansive sky lounge. The first hull of the all-new Princess X80 is now in the water and was just featured at the recent shipyard event. Similar to the larger X95 Super Flybridge, the X80 has unique lines for a Princess as the upper and main decks stretch the length of the yacht. The "Super Flybridge" name is well-deserved as it features three separate socializing areas on the X-80: a forward flybridge seating area, an enclosed, climate-controlled bridge, and the aft flybridge lounge area. This change comes as more yacht owners have asked for more entertainment space on the flybridge since this is where the best views are and where guests tend to want to spend their time.
