Royal Huisman

Overview of all Huisman yachts and craft built since 1884:

p_019_Jacob en Jan

1961 – present day

The last steel yachts were built in the early 1960s. Once again, Huisman wanted something new, aluminium. From the 1960’s a large number of aluminium yachts has been built; from 1999 the chosen material was Alustar aluminium. For reasons unknown, the shipyard build numbers start with the number 209.

The first was an Avenir. It was built speculatively with a view to achieving a sale at the Boat show in Friedrichshafen but, as no sale was secured, the yacht had to be transported back to the yard by train. Eventually the first Avenir was sold, the first of many aluminium yachts to come …

1951 – 1960

In the post-war years, the yard slowly re-established itself and the workforce grew to eight or ten men by 1960. Around 1954 the last two wooden Vollenhovense Bollen were delivered, the “Njord” and the “Zween.” When Wolter Huisman came back from military service he was determined to build in steel. First, he built a press to bend frames to reduce costs. He then started a course in electric welding in Meppel.

The first steel yacht was a little motorboat designed by Henk Tingen and built speculatively; it was eventually sold to a cigar merchant from Kampen who named it Guido II. A few years ago it was renovated completely and, once again, it sails like new. Several more steel yachts followed including the “Najade”, three steel “Beulakkermeer” cruisers for the Marine Yacht Club, a motoryacht “Tempora te Tempori”, and a number of yachts from designers such as Van de Stadt, Robert Clark, Baron van der Heuvel and Buchanen.

p_025_54a_Ronduite

1941 – 1950

During the war few ships were built or delivered. The “Goedzee” was finished and delivered and the preparation of previously-ordered Beulakkermeer cruisers continued as far as possible. In addition, several punters and other working craft were built and repaired. Due to the war, demand for pleasure cruisers collapsed and, with it, the size of the workforce which fell from fifteen to twenty men to as few as three. It is unknown exactly how many craft, and of what types, were built during this period.

p_014_Wolter Huisman 1873-1945_big

1931 – 1940

With an increasing contribution from brothers Jan and Jacob, the yard constructed four Dekenpunters, twenty-three Giethoornse punters, one Jagerspunter, four Kaarpunters, seventeen Bootjes, three 8-spanterpunters, one Paling Ligger, ten Motorboats, two Staverse Jollen, one Schouw, two small ferries, three small yachts, two Grundel yachts, thirteen BM yachts, one Sailing yacht, three Pampers, two Scarpies, two Libel yachts, two Vogeljachtjes, two Cruisers type Pal, thirty Beulakkermeer cruisers, thirty Beulakkermeer type 2 cruisers, one Lark and one Junior Jol: a total of 141 craft.

The trend that began in the 1920s accelerated into the 1930s with the construction of fifty-five fishing and work boats compared with eighty-six pleasure cruising yachts. In this period several Bakdeckcruiser motor yachts were built and a growing number of sailing boats. The most well-known is the “Beulakkermeer” cruiser.

p_226_1932 motorkruisertje Myrra

1921 – 1930

Expansion increased with the production of two Dekenpunters, seventy-eight Giethoornse punters, two punters “Dorts Model”, eight Jagerspunters, fifteen Kaarpunters, forty-seven Bootjes, one Drogepunter, four Vlotten, twenty-nine 8-spanterpunters, one Paling Ligger, four Scheepjes / Vollenhovense Bollen, six Motorboats and one Staverse Jol: a total of 198 craft

At the end of the 1920s orders for fishing boats increasingly gave way to those for pleasure cruisers. In 1927 the first Vollenhovense Bol was built completely as a pleasure cruising boat for Mr. van de Berg from Bussum. He owned her for only a couple of years before circumstances necessitated her sale. She is still in commission and in very good order…

p_226_zwart wit onder zeil c Vrouwe Lucia 1927

1911 – 1920

The yard constructed five Dekenpunters, sixty-three Giethoornse punters, three Jagerspunters, twenty-seven Kaarpunters, twenty-nine Bootjes, one Vlot, nineteen 8-spanterpunters, three Paling Liggers, one “little houseboat” seven Scheepjes / Vollenhovense Bollen, one Botter, one Motorboat and one Schouw: a total of 161 craft.

In 1914 the first “Vollenhovense Bol” was delivered as a fishing boat for a fisherman from Kuinre – all seven of those delivered in this period were built for fishing. In 1919 the first boat for pleasure cruising was built: a sailing punter for a doctor in Scheveningen. It was 18 ft in length by 37 inches in beam. The yard’s old ledgers reveal that this boat was delivered including rudder, two boards, mast and a sprit. Unlike the working examples, it had to be neatly planed and finished, resulting in almost double the price of the commercial version.

p_015_Jan_and_Jacob_1920

1901 – 1910

Huisman built the following: fourteen Dekenpunters, twenty-seven Giethoornse punters, twenty-one Kaarpunters, eight Bootjes, two Vlotten, four Visserssloepen, twenty-six 8-spanterpunters and one Melkpunter: a total of 103 craft.

Production increased rapidly during this period, but payment did not always follow suit. Many punters were paid for in two, three or even four stage payments, so the yard might have to wait from two to four years for full payment. The craft mainly operated in the direct neighbourhood, but some orders came from further away: one to Urk, fifteen to Vollenhove, fourteen to Zwartsluis, one to Wolvega, one to Kalenberg, three to Zwolle, one to Hindeloopen, fourteen to Grafhorst, thirty-six to Belt-Schultsloot, three to Wilsum, three stayed on the “Ronduite,” one to Oldemarkt, three to Kampen, one to Wanneperveen, two to Kuinre, one to Dalfsen, three to Genemuiden, one to Giethoorn.

p_013_laatste punter 1942

1896 – 1900

The yard is known to have built three Dekenpunters, one Giethoornse punter, five Bokken, three Kaarpunters, three Bootjes, two Drogepunters, three 8-spanterpunters: a total of twenty craft.

Jan Jans Huisman started working for himself on the “Ronduite” in 1884. During the first years he did not register everything he built – or, at least, no documents survive that cover the whole period. After his son Wolter joined the business in 1896, things became more organised: all craft were registered, a new shed of 12 meters by 6 meters was constructed and a ramp was planned and built. In the early years many large repairs and refits were also undertaken for peat ships (Tjalken, Bokken, etc.) Because of their large size, these ships were limited in navigability, but the Huisman yard at the “Ronduite” was easy for them to access.

1884 – 1896

No precise records exist for this period; the yard appears to have started registration of its ships in 1896.

By Nina Done   31 March 2023

Royal Huisman has released a collection of stunning new images of the elegant 81m (266ft) sailing yacht SEA EAGLE II , currently the largest aluminum sailing yacht in the world, following her global voyage covering over 45,000 nautical miles.

Showcasing never seen before images since her low-key delivery under the shadow of the pandemic in 2020, pictures reveal her dramatic lines, plumb bow and majestic Panamax rig under power, courtesy of Dykstra Naval Architects and Mark Whitely Design.

Her vast rigging encompasses three mainsails that can be hoisted simultaneously for ultra-efficient post-lunch getaways, while her aluminum hull ensures a lightness, acceleration, strength and fuel efficiency, giving her the edge over other heavy, sail-assisted yachts.

Charter sailing yacht SEA EAGLE II

As well as being an aesthetically alluring yacht, one with real presence on the water, this is a yacht that regularly sails at double-digit speeds and takes a matter of minutes to go from anchored to sailing.

Commissioned by an experienced owner, the brief was clear: to create an extremely comfortable and spacious sailing yacht with good sea keeping and exceptional amenities for both guests and crew, alongside the important functional aspects of performance, reliability and power under sail.

Charter sailing yacht SEA EAGLE II

Supersized sailing yachts like this are no longer an impossible dream, Royal Huisman’s CEO Jan Timmerman points out: “Continual innovation, accumulated expertise and rigorous self-challenge have come together through our highly skilled and dedicated team to produce Athena, SEA EAGLE II and, currently in-build, the world’s largest sloop, the 85 m (280ft) New World Sloop aka Project 410."

Royal Huisman unveils new 100-metre sailing yacht concept

by Mariska Buitendijk | Aug 10, 2023 | News , Ship design , Yachts

royal huisman sailing yachts

Dutch yacht builder Royal Huisman, Dykstra Naval Architects and Mark Whiteley Design say that with the Wing 100 concept, they have developed an entirely new megayacht category. This 100-metre concept focuses on the highest standards of environmental sustainability with proven technology for worldwide reliability.

Its advanced systems platform easily accommodates future technological advances and regulatory requirements.

The innovative, aluminum-hulled Wing 100 is a true sailing yacht – not a heavy sail assisted motor yacht – yet one with an important difference. It can be easily and securely handled and quickly deployed. Wing 100 has been conceived to provide the perfect cross-over for motor yacht owners who want to minimise their environmental footprint by reducing the weight of their yacht, but retain the highest standards of amenity and comfort.

Advanced rig

These benefits arise because Wing 100 has a highly advanced rig by Rondal. The wing masts have airfoil profiles, are free standing, and rotate to provide very powerful, integrated airfoils with the sails. The shape of the airfoil can easily and remotely be adjusted to maximise or reduce power.

Being free-standing, the wing masts have no standing rigging or associated deck clutter, maximising safe, clean amenity space on deck. The wing masts are easily and safely remote-controlled to ensure fast, energy-efficient sailing.

To put the Wing 100 concept in perspective: it is a true sailing yacht that will earn its ranking among the world’s top ten sailing yachts, states Royal Huisman , along with the yacht builder’s other builds Athena and Sea Eagle II; soon to be joined by the new 85-metre New World Sloop, Project 410, currently under construction in Vollenhove.

Royal Huisman supersized sailing yachts: Sea Eagle II (81 m/266 ft), Project 410 (85 m/280 ft) and Athena (90 m/295 ft).

Technologies for wind-assisted cargo ships

The range of new technologies applied by the shipyard are to maximise the energy efficiency of Wing 100 and include pioneering board systems next to the advanced wing mast rig. Royal Huisman expects these technologies to also be embraced by wind-assisted cargo sailing ships.

‘The emergence of sailing yachts on this scale, with the level of energy efficiency and ecoresponsibility offered by Wing 100, would have been unthinkable just a decade ago,’ comments Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman. ‘The team is incredibly excited to be at the forefront of this conceptual revolution. We look forward to applying our renowned innovation and engineering skills to the realisation of this highly ambitious project – creating the fourth and largest Royal Huisman build yet in the global top 10 of supersized sailing yachts.’

The owner is an experienced yachtsman who drew up his Sea Eagle II wish list while sailing aboard his previous 142-foot sloop (also named Sea Eagle ). His next yacht had to be bigger—much bigger, in fact, at almost twice the length and five times more interior volume.

Royal Huisman's 266-foot "Sea Eagle II" sailing superyacht has made a successful return to Europe from a four-year trip around the world.

At the same time, the owner demanded outstanding sailing performance. (The owner and captain both declined interviews about the voyage, but Royal Huisman provided extensive notes about the yacht after it traveled thousands of miles.)

That kind of new technology required extensive planning. Before the build commenced, a virtual model of the yacht was built, tested, refined and re-tested for over six months. It was a smart move, considering the yacht’s technical specs, both above and below the waterline. Beneath the hull, Sea Eagle II ‘s 16-foot-long, massive rudder—the largest carbon-composite rudder ever produced—is fitted with fiber-optic sensors laminated into the blade to provide real-time performance data, such as torque and deflection. That level of data not only helps while racing but also optimizes the vessel’s efficiency for long-distance cruising.

Above the vessel, the sail plan is over 37,600 square feet. That outsized volume of sail across three masts is controlled by 34 winches using a remote sail-management system developed by Dykstra Naval Architects, Rondal, Carbo-Link and Doyle Sails.

Royal Huisman's 266-foot "Sea Eagle II" sailing superyacht has made a successful return to Europe from a four-year trip around the world.

“Despite her size, Sea Eagle II gets moving quickly,” said the captain in the notes. “From a skipper’s perspective, especially when racing, this means you can always be confident of performance.”

The hull, painted in flag blue, is built from aluminum, chosen for its lightness and strength. It served the owner’s preference for simplicity and reliability, but also proved challenging when joining the long, low superstructure, much of which is made from laminated glass.

“Despite her size, Sea Eagle II gets moving quickly,” said the captain in the notes. “From a skipper’s perspective, especially when racing, this means you can always be confident of performance.”

The shipyard glued the two materials together using a technique developed in the aerospace industry. It allows for up to 8 inches of flex between the deck and structure, yet provides a secure, weathertight bond. And the curved, forward windshield provides a stunning panoramic view for everyone on board.

The exterior design was by two renowned design firms, Netherlands-based Dykstra and UK-based Mark Whiteley Design, which also did the interior. One of the advantages of a joint design approach is the extra set of eyes on both internal and external areas. For example, the hull chine sweeping beneath the crew portholes to meet the waterline gives the superstructure “a curved tension,” according to Whiteley, yet also maximizes interior space.

For Dykstra, the focus was on speed and handling. “The modern styling allows a beamy transom and almost full-length waterline, providing better sail-keeping capabilities and promising faster crossings in greater comfort,” said Dykstra’s Erik Wassen. “The yacht can sail with less heel, greatly improving the comfort on board.”

Both the owner’s suite and five other staterooms for 10 guests are located on the lower deck. One guest cabin can be converted into a gym. True to form, the owner’s desire for transatlantic sailing drove many of the layout decisions, including a large hatch on the aft deck where a stern platform with concealed steps, a 26-foot tender, a crane, water-scooter and dive gear are stored.

Sea Eagle II may have returned from its globetrotting adventure, but judging by the owner’s lust for travel, it won’t be in the nest for long.
