Sea Ranger MMS 55 first look: This British-built explorer is a true trawler yacht

  • Top stories

Using the term trawler yacht to describe the latest generation of luxury navetta-style GRP liveaboards can feel a bit jarring.

So the new Sea Ranger MMS 55 provides the perfect antidote for serious cruisers. A trawler yacht in the true sense of the word, it borrows not just its looks and hull shape from a genuine North Sea trawler but also its bulletproof build quality and heavy-weather seakeeping.

Built at a commercial shipyard in Hull from 7mm thick plate steel and weighing a mighty 60 tonnes, it has the kind of offshore integrity which most GRP craft can only dream of.

Twin 180hp heavy duty cycle John Deere diesels designed to run for 5,000 hours a year and a Category A-rated hull with a towering bow and decks littered with scuppers, should allow it to push through seas which would send most craft running for home. And thanks to a fuel capacity of 6,400 litres it will keep on plodding at 8 knots for over 1,500nm.

Deep bilge keels combined with fin stabilisers keep roll under control, while bow and stern thrusters help with low speed manoeuvring.

In true trawler style a relatively compact main deck saloon leads to a raised wheelhouse with side doors to port and starboard.

The stainless steel galley and dinette are below decks with a water-tight door giving access to the three cabins; a double owner’s cabin and two guest cabins with traditional bunks and a shared bathroom.

The large engineroom has been fitted out to full commercial spec with twin 21kW generators and a fresh water maker serving twin 500 litre tanks.

One thousand litres of grey and 500 litres of black water capacity further enhance its offshore cruising capability. A six-person Zodiac with 15hp outboard is housed on the foredeck next to a launch crane and liferaft.

The MMS 55 is the brainchild of company owner Rob Langton, who has long dreamt of building a leisure boat with the cruising legs and robust build of the yard’s famously sturdy commercial craft.

SEA RANGER Yacht – Extraordinaire $50M Superyacht

The SEA RANGER yacht is not the typical sleekly opulent yacht; she is a converted ocean-going ice-class tug boat that towed oil platforms and salvaged distressed tankers.

She was first built in 1973 by German shipbuilders Schichau Unterweser, with the interior styled by Heinz Rollers.

Yachting enthusiast Jack Setton later bought her. He had her converted into a luxurious yacht with a rugged exterior capable of visiting the polar ice caps just as easily as the Caribbean.

The fascinating history of the 77.7m ocean-going yacht includes time as an oceanographic research boat.

SEA RANGER yacht interior

The exterior of the SEA RANGER yacht may appear rugged and utilitarian, but the interior is entirely luxurious. The interior was originally styled by Heinz Vollers and delivered in 1973.

SEA RANGER’s conversion from an ocean-going tug boat to a yacht was in 1994 by Malta Drydock Company, which made her a comfortable and luxurious boat capable of taking trips to every corner of the globe in style.

sea ranger superyacht images

There is accommodation for ten guests in 5 suites and 19 crew members for a luxury experience.

The low-key luxury of the yacht is stated through wide and comfortable decks that provide lots of space to lounge and dine.

There is a jacuzzi, a basketball court, swimming pools, a helicopter pad, a garage full of tenders with a 40ft cabin cruiser, a seaplane, and numerous small boats.

SEA RANGER yacht exterior

The SEA RANGER yacht was built by Schichau Unterweser at their Bremerhaven shipyard. She appears utilitarian with her rugged exterior and her aft crane. In 1994, the exterior was re-conceptualized by Kusch Yachts for a French owner.

The rugged exterior displays her past life as an ocean-going vessel ice-class tug boat with a steel hull and superstructure.

She was originally built to be a tug for towing oil platforms across the ocean and salvaging distressed tankers. Now, she is the best platform to explore every corner of the world with family.

Her black hull and large crane are a part of her ability to traverse every part of the world safely and securely, all while in the lap of low-key luxury.

She was later resold to an American businessman who renamed her Lone Ranger and refitted with a wide range of tenders ready to carry families across the world.

After 15 years in service, the American businessman donated her to an oceanographic institute that used her as a marine research ship for three years.

He is worth $500 million and owns a Romanian Company called GSP( Grup Servicii Petroliere ) that provides offshore services for oil, gas, and wind energies.

Barstool owner rescued by Coast Guard after losing control of boat off Nantucket

The owner and founder of Barstool Sports lost control of a boat off Massachusetts before being rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Dave Portnoy, 47, said in a TikTok video that the harrowing Monday rescue off Nantucket happened after he unhooked his boat from buoys. Heavy winds then caused him to drift out to sea, and his engine was dead, he said.

Portnoy said another boater saw that he was in distress and radioed the Coast Guard.

Coast Guard rescuers towed the boat back to mooring, Portnoy said. He said he appreciated the work of the “four burly dudes” who rescued him, and that he might be finished with boating for a while.

“Captain Dave lives to tell another tale. Third time as captain, already lost at sea. It’s a dangerous game, the sea’s angry my friends,” Portnoy said via TikTok.

Portnoy, who maintains a robust online presence and has millions of followers, used another social media channel, X, to thank the Coast Guard on Monday. The Coast Guard responded with a message for Miss Peaches, Portnoy's pit bull.

“Any time, Dave,” the Coast Guard posted, with a pair of smiling emoji. “Tell Miss Peaches we love her.”

Portnoy founded Barstool Sports in 2003 in the Boston area. The sports and pop culture website has more than 16 million followers on Instagram.

In an image taken from Monday, July 15, 2024, video, provided by Dave Portnoy, Portnoy speaks about his rescue at sea by the U.S. Coast Guard off the coast of the island of Nantucket, Mass. The Coast Guard confirms it rescued the founder of the Barstool Sports website after a boating accident off of Nantucket. (Dave Portnoy via AP)

Dave Portnoy rescued by Coast Guard after drifting out to sea: 'Almost lost Captain Dave'

"captain dave may never go on the boat again," said portnoy..

Barstool Sports' owner and founder Dave Portnoy was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard after losing control of his boat off the Massachusetts' coast.

"You boys almost lost Captain Dave today," said Portnoy in a TikTok video he posted explaining what happened. "Captain Dave almost was lost to the ocean."

On Monday, Portnoy took his mother out on a boat ride off the coast of Nantucket, he said. Portnoy did not try to turn on the boat before unhooking it from the from the buoys. He drifted out and attempted to turn on the boat only to find that the boat had no power.

Content warning: Video below contains language that is not suitable for all audiences .

The boat had no power, radio or anchor and there were heavy winds which caused him to drift out to sea, Portnoy explained.

"Next thing you know, Captain Dave is lost at sea," said Portnoy.

The Barstool founder began screaming for help as he sailed, and shot a distress signal from a flare gun he kept onboard the boat.

Coast Guard rescues Portnoy

According to Portnoy, a woman "in what looks like a rowboat," boarded his boat and asked if they can make a TikTok together, said Portnoy. He declined her request and then used her radio to contact the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard made it to Portnoy's location where they tied up his boat and towed it back.

This was Portnoy's third, and possibly last time captaining a boat.

"Captain Dave may never go on the boat again," he said.

USA TODAY reached out to the Coast Guard for comment.

feadship project 1012 yacht launched

92m hybrid electric Feadship Drizzle delivered to owner

The 91.8-metre Feadship superyacht Drizzle has now been delivered following successful sea trials in June. According to BOATPro , her final destination is Malta, an archipelago in the central Mediterranean.

The superyacht was last seen departing from the shipyard's facilities in Amsterdam (13 June). Built for a repeat Feadship owner who came to the project with "informed requests based on his long experience of yachting", Drizzle 's design is by Dutch studio Sinot and the owner's related design office.

Characterised by chamfered exterior contours and a more traditional flared bow, the yacht has a modern-classic style with naval architecture by Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects . Notably, she is the first Feadship to carry full Hybrid Electric Class notation.

Drizzle 's interior is designed to reflect an "understated family home" with natural materials and finishes throughout. Accommodation is found on the main deck, along with the large pool and open-air lounge shaded by the deckhead overhang.

Meanwhile, the owner's suite, family lounge and wellness area are situated on the upper decks. Up top, the sundeck serves as an observation vantage point with a forward-facing sofa and sun loungers, while the aft deck is used for storing two rescue tenders.

One of the owner's key requirements in building the yacht was to house a more spacious beach club in the stern, which occupies one-quarter of the total length of the lower deck. The large, fixed stern platform combines with two fold-down platforms to create 165 square metres of water-level lounging space. Sweeping staircases on either side of the stern platform lead to the main deck aft.

Between the engine room and the beach club is a side-loading garage with room for two 10-metre tenders, a ski boat and various water toys. Forward is the crew area, comprising the galley, crew mess and crew accommodation.

Drizzle carries full Hybrid Electric Class notation, the power package comprising two main engines and shaft-driven fixed pitch propellers, coupled with electric motors of 560kW each and 1MW of Li-ion batteries. The e-motors work as shaft generators to produce electricity to serve the hotel load or recharge the battery bank, as well as for low-speed navigation while the generators or batteries generate the required electrical power.

Albert Abma, Feadship project manager, commented on the launch in April: "Working with the experienced owner, designers and owner's team has been a professional pleasure. Gathering the operational experience of the owner's team with the yard’s building experience has resulted in this modern-classic, state-of-art and full-custom new Feadship".

The news comes closely after the first proper sighting of Project 713 , Feadship's first solar powered superyacht. She is now preparing for sea trials.

New Sea Ranger MMS 55: A Bulletproof Cruiser

' src=

Spoiler alert: Keep reading only if you’re interested in bulletproof expedition-type cruising boats made to tackle rough sea conditions anywhere in the world.

The new Sea Ranger MMS 55, made by a commercial yard in northern England, isn’t meant to stay at the dock. I don’t know how many people it can hold for cocktails or a sunset cruise around the harbor.

The Sea Ranger has a sturdy steel-plate hull; it weighs almost 60 tons. It comes with the looks and the performance of a North Sea trawler, with a high bow and decks lined with scuppers.

Powered by twin 180-hp John Deere diesels, the Sea Ranger MMS 55 has a range of 1,500 nm at 8 knots. Top speed: 10 knots.

The new trawler carries a Category A offshore rating, so it should handle punishing sea conditions. It has a deep bilge keel and fin stabilizers to control roll, and bow and stern thrusters to make low-speed maneuvering easy.

The salon on the main deck opens up to the pilothouse, with doors leading to the port and starboard side decks. The galley and dinette are below, with three cabins – a double for the master and two guest cabins with bunk beds. There’s one head and shower.

sea ranger yacht owner

The foredeck carries a six-person Zodiac with a 15-hp outboard for exploring, plus a crane for launching and a liferaft for the worst-case scenario.

The boat was made by Rob Langton, the managing director of the MMS shipyard on the Humber. It also comes in a workboat version.

Specs.: LOA: 59’1”; Beam: 17’9”; Draft: NA; Disp.: 60 tons; Fuel: 1,690 gals.; Water: 264 gals.; Power: 2×180-hp John Deere diesels. Read more:

Alongside these features, the vessel’s deep keel, longitudinal I-beam, and thick fibreglass layup ensure a smooth and comfortable cruising experience. The newly installed fibreglass decks in 2012 by Blackline Marine not only eliminate worries about teak decks but also contribute to the overall ease of upkeep that “Lone Ranger” offers.

Her meticulous owners have invested significantly in upgrades over the past 11 years, resulting in a vessel that exudes a brand new feeling. Both the hull and house have undergone professional repainting using a high quality 2-part Alexseal paint system. Due to a change of plans, completion of the flybridge has been postponed, although it has been prepped and is ready for painting (Alexseal paint from the same lot number as the hull and bridge provided with vessel as well as brushes, rollers, and tape – additional pictures available on request ).

Access to the flybridge can be found either through a vertical ladder in the aft cockpit or via a convenient stairway from the pilothouse. A sunbrella bimini top is included (not pictured), as well as a flybridge cover for protection when not in use.

The salon welcomes you with a delightful ambiance, characterized by its light, cozy, and comfortable atmosphere. Every detail of the interior has been enhanced and cared for, from the beautifully refinished teak and holly sole to the bulkheads and carpeting. The soft furnishings have also received updates, ensuring a calm, and inviting space.

The gourmet galley, equipped with all the comforts of home, boasts a burl wood accent wall. The countertop in the galley is customizable and can be conveniently removed from the vessel, creating extra space in the salon area as needed. Ample stowage is found aboard, especially by means of the additional sideboard/bar area with sink.

Moving up two steps into the raised pilothouse, you’ll immediately notice the natural light and fantastic sightliness of the foredeck and surrounding water. Any Arima Boat Owners?

  • Add to quote

Howdy... I'm looking into a new boat and I like the looks of the arima... so the question to you owners.. What size is your boat? what engine do you have pushing it? how's it perform? and What kind of ride do you get in rough water? A dry ride? wet ride? thanks.. dave

I faced the same dillema... Shopped for 5 years to finally get my boat.... Climbed all over many boats and finally decided between an Arima and a C-Dory. I bought the Sea Lion, a 22' C-Dory Angler. Check out www.c-brats.com For me I know I made the right choice. I love my boat ang always get complememnts on it. There are very few boats that would not want to trade me fuel bills after a long offshore trip. I am not saying there is anything at all wrong with Arima boats but I was in your shoes and wanted to offer you my experience. Feel free to PM me if you would like more info about my boat or my quest...

To answer your questions... What size is your boat? 22 foot what engine do you have pushing it? Started with a 75, now I have a 90HP Suzuki 4 stroke how's it perform? Awsome! 36mph WOT and a very nice cruise at 20-22 at about 4800 RPM 5600 RPM red line. What kind of ride do you get in rough water? Incredible. I was caught in 14' seas and at that speed I was one of the fastest boats returning to port. The hull planes at just over 9mph so rough water is not a big deal on the fuel consumption. It does pound a bit in a chop but you can either slow down or trim the bow down to take advantage of the V entry. A dry ride? wet ride? With a hard top cabin it is nice and dry. With the windows and door open there is a nice breeze. I love my boat, ask anyone

I have the 16' Sea Explorer it has a 4 cycle 75 HP. Yamaha on it now with a 8 HP Suzski kicker, I bought it new in 1997 and have had the boat in a lot of different conditions all of which the boat handled better then me. One summer my wife and I took the summer off and did the inside passage all the way to Alaska. We had the time and were able to choose our days and had a wonderful time ! Arima makes a great boat and I sure enjoy mine ! Big Dave.

thank you all for the reply's so far... a little bit more about me.. i'm looking at either the 19' sea chaser or the 21 sea ranger. both basically have the same amount of fishign room.. Looking at putting a honda 135 on which ever one I go with. So far the replies I am reading are pretty much what everyone says about their arima and that is they love them.. I do know it sure is hard to find a used one.... anyone else have an arima they want to tell me about? d

A 19' just went on the ifish classifieds today for $18500.

I've got a 17' Sea Ranger. My first boat, after years of doing Alaskan aluminum boats.... Has a Merc 115 on it. I get on plane as soon as I dump the throttle. It jumps out of the water. For a 17' you could go less HP - I definately suck the gas with a inline 6 in the back. Check out the arima microsoft groups - search for arima boat owners, and it will come up... It rides rough because it's light in choppy water, but the tradeoff is a heck of a safe boat - check out their pics of filling it with lead and it still stays above the water (although gas mileage probably is not too good ;-). You can put tabs or a doelfin on it to help smooth the ride... I'm in Beaverton if you ever need a close-up view of one..it's a 87, but in really good condition..

Don't own one but I've admired Arima's for a long time. One design feature I really like is how the motor is recessed into the transom, providing planing surface and bouyancy behind (or at least next to) the motor. This looks like it should provide excellent protection from getting hit in the a$$ with a big wave. My slightly off-topic question is; with the recessed transom, is there enough room for a twin outboard setup, - using motors strong enough to plane the boat individually? Just something I would want to know if I were going to buy one. -SF

silverfly.. they list dual motors as an option on afew of the boats.. I have seen the 19' with dual 45's on it.. but they are a tight fit.... If I get one mine will have the hydrolyc kicker motor bracket.... and probably an auto pilot... d

Lepper, I've owned two Arimas. I just sold my 17' Sea Chaser 1984. I then bought a 2003 21 Sea Ranger Hard Top with the Honda 120 HP. That boat is a dream. It has the best length to width ratio of all of Arimas boats. I get a lot less chop than I did with my 17' at high speeds becuase it's heavier and longer with the same width. I'm a long time Arima Boat Owners Group Member under the name Calvin. I have a photo of my boat on this site under "My Limit". I bought it with like 8 hours on it from a guy in San Diego who set it up for tuna. By all means if you can afford the 21 get it over the 19. You won't be sorry. The 22 is two wide to park most places. (9 foot beam) You need a wide load flag to trailer it. As far as engines I top out at about 31 mph at 5500-5800 RPM with my 120. If you can get one size bigger it would not hurt, but 31 mph is fast enough for me. These boats are not built for speed, they are built for stability. I've been out in some crazy stuff and these Arima boats are incredible. They are legendary for their abilities in rough water and they are designed with one thing in mind, fishing!! That's why they are so great in the Northwest. You won't find many 21 HT for sale used. You will have to shop around. A new 21 HT will run you about 33-34k with the basic options. I looked at C-Dory's also as they are good boats. They appear to be more expensive for what you get. Their boat that would compare with my 21HT is their 22 Angler. Those go for around 40k. Their 19 Angler goes for the same as an Arima 21 HT and it is not as much boat as the Arima. It had about the same fishing space as my 17 Chaser. Many of the C-Dorys have stoves, heaters etc. If I had the cash and was going to live in my boat or go in the San Juans I would go C-Dory. If I wanted to do hard core fishing on a modest budget without living on the boat I would go Arima. Both are excellent rough water fishing boats. It's just a matter of what suits your needs and budget. The C-Dory has been compared to the Volkswagen Bus and the Arima to an SUV either way they both get it done rough water and are econimical. Go to arimaboatownersgroup.com for more information. Let me know if you want some help finding one I just bought mine this winter so I have a lot of connections and have done research. Before I forget to tell you Arima has the best customer service of any company I've ever dealt with. If anything breaks or you need anything just give them a call and you will talk to person not machine who will send you whatever you want within a day or so. When I was restoring my old 1984 Sea Chaser, I could call up and ask the owner and engineers questions whenever. They are AWESOME!!! You can't beat a company that stands by their product!! Give me PM if you need anything! My Limit

Sorry ray but as I told my buddy interested in a C-Dory. If they would allow it I would ram and sink them all day long throw my head back and laugh. They are skinny and lightweight. 21' Edwing Ocean BULLETPROOF. Keep your small fuel bills.

Jon, Jon, Jon.... If you do manage to sink my boat or make it unfishable I will have to fish on your tank and it will list to one side. At least the company will be good but you will need a bigger fish box....

I had a 15' SeaHunter and it was excellent. I bought one because a friend had a 17' SeaChaser that was great. Since then, he has traded up to a NEW 21' That boat rocks. Arima rules. Try to sink one. :yay:

Hi Lepper... I have a '97 19-ft Sea Ranger, softop, with a 90 Honda. Great boat, like others have said, so I'll try not to repeat, except to say the availability and advice from Arima Co. is truly outstanding!!! I believe the difference between and Sea Chaser and a Sea Ranger is the size of the Cuddy Cabin versus open fishing space, the Ranger cabin being about 6-ft, and the Chaser 1 & 1/2 ft shorter (but the fishing space is that much larger). The 6-ft cabin is great for storing rods, tackle, PFD, etc. I never sleep in it, but know of full-sized adults who have. Not sure if I that I would go with the shorter cabin were I to buy again. The fishing area of my 19-ft is very adequate for 3 adults in the ocean under any fishable conditions, and I've used up to 12 crabs traps/pots on the deck (must admit it is a bit crowded with 4-5 people on board, until the traps are in the water). If I intended to spend a majority of time in the ocean or the Columbia, I would consider the 21-ft, but my 19-ft handles more than my head and stomach can, and works well for the places I use it. The few times I've been out there when it just was not fishable, for all practical purposes, I've never felt the boat could not handle the conditions. The 19-ft is very serviceable for small lakes and water (e.g. Suttle Lake) The Skip Tower feature is something I would give very serious consideration were I to buy again (I prefer an open feeling, and for me, a hard top is out of the question). My softop Arima is too tall, and too wide to fit into any garage I've had, so a Skip Tower would allow antenna's to be mounted on top, and GPS, VHF and/or FF screens on the underside, plus it would offer something solid to hang onto while getting the the bow (Arima's cuddy's are wide, and there is realtively little walking room to the bow, but then I do not go there often). Storage on Arima's is very good, with a built in fish box, and lots of other, both open and protected. There is a 14 gallon fresh water tank with a pump at the stern. Arima's take waves on the stern very well, which can include backing rapidly into the current (seems like the stern lifts up, rather than being pushed down). Drawbacks are (1) the 48 gallon fuel tank is located entirely at the stern (although I seldom carry or need more than 20 gallons there); (2) and the "plastic" tank has become discoloration to the point I can no longer tell how much fuel is in there (I now use a stick to check quanity of fuel). I believe the discoloration is from fuel stablizer; (3) the reverse transom can require the use of a shim get the trolling motor vertical (depending on the make of the bracket and your kicker), and (4) they make a pretty good wake at slow speeds, requiring you to either go very slow, or fast to avoid waking others (but boy, do they come up on plane quickly, then there is little wake). I've had to replace the steering cable twice due to hardened grease. Others have not had that problem, so it may be the way I fish, which gets a lot of saltwater on the steering rod. Re: 90 hp Honda - works great for me. When water is right, can go 31 mph, but the conditions are seldom right for that. I have great torque, and the 90 is just right for ocean Coho trolling (but usually a little fast for Chinook). If you buy new, I would get a trailer with SS disc brakes, and a winch tower that you can step on, which makes loading very easy by yourself (and Arima's are very easy to drive onto the trailer). My trailer has roller mid-ship and bunks at the stern - a very good and stable combination. If you want to buy used, I would do my research and be prepared to move quickly - 19-ft SR are not on the market very often, and when they are, they go quickly. Let me know if you want more info. ... I still can't find that bullet proof boat he was talking about. Is it on line? I could not find it with a google search.

Puffin sank it.

anyone else have an arima out there? d

sea ranger yacht owner

Just sold mine, when it left my driveway I felt that twinge like I just lost my best dog or something. Great boat, especially for the money. Served me very well for several years. Handles rough seas fairly well for such a small boat. Arima has a very wide beam to length ratio that makes a stable fishing platform. I had the 17 and the only real problem was range and room. I'm upgrading to the bulletproof one mentioned earlier.

Well, I didn't want to say anything before this because the ink isn't yet dry on my deal, and I don't want to jinx it, but I just agreed to buy a 17' Sea Ranger. I looked around for a couple months before I found one to my liking, but I think it was worthwhile waiting. This one is CHERRY.

I might consider one of those tin cans that sink fast.. if I could find someone to give me a ride in one to see how they handle... The 21fter arima I road in was a very smooth ride. and that was in 2-4 wind waves on the bay.. was very impressed.. add that to the 68gallon gas capacity the 21ft has and you can go a LONG WAYS!! d

Lepper, Good choice on your boat purchase. I own a Arima 16ft Sea Explorer. I have a Mercury 80 2-stroke with a Mercury 9.9 4 stroke. I purchased my Arima in 1994. It is a 1990 model. I have used this boat from lakes, rivers and the ocean. I have had alot of different boats and this is the best boat I have ever owned. Most of my fishing now has been in the ocean and she handles very well. My best buddy has a 19ft Sea Ranger. I was on board with my wife when we took the biggest wave I have ever faced while in the ocean. All I saw was a wall of water coming from the starboard side. He turned the bow into the wave and the Arima handled it just fine. All my fishing buddies feel confident when they go aboard an Arima. Arima's are only as good as the skipper who is at the helm. Enjou your boat!

haven't ordered it yet.. but I am strongly leaning to the arima 21'.. I am going to look at bayliners (isn't that a bad word?) here next week.. the real only thing that grabbed my attention is that I can get a cummins diesel in one for power.... can you say 80 gallons and 500 mile range?? d

Lepper, Go have Kurt at Y Marina in Coos show you a Striper. They are available in diesel and are a better boat. JMHO David
