New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

Once you confirm your reservation, your broker will process your payment.

• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is confirmed more than 7 days in advance, a deposit of either $1,000 USD or 50% of the total cost of the reservation (whichever is greater) is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 7 days away, the remainder of the amount due is processed.
• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is made 7 days or less in advance, the total price of your reservation is processed immediately.
• If you are booking for a multi-day charter and your reservation is confirmed more than 30 days in advance, a deposit of 50% of the cost of the yacht is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.

Little Venice : Regarded as one of the most romantic places in all of Mykonos, Little Venice is the meeting point of the magical and the majestic; painting an elegant picture of modern-day Greece with its gorgeous seafront homes, inherent charm, whitewashed buildings, sapphire blue waters, and interesting local fare. Windmills : A mainstay in the landscape of Mykonos, the windmills can be seen from any spot on the island. Located in and around Chora and Alevkantra, they are white in color and made of high-quality wood – used historically as a tool to grind the agricultural produce exported to other islands and neighboring countries. More than 100 years old, these windmills do not work today; however, they still stand as a symbol of Mykonos ’ agricultural and productive past. Many of them have since been renovated and turned into museums, like Bonis Windmill, the most well-known of all.

The Church of Panagia Paraportiani : Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the lovely church of Panagia Paraportiani is situated right near the beginning of the neighborhood of Kastro. Mykonos Island has a long and deep cultural history. Mykonos Town, the capital of Mykonos is where those who want a cultural fix will gravitate. You will enjoy wandering the streets of Little Venice - arguably the prettiest part of the whole island and from where you can see some of the best sunsets in Greece. The famous windmills above Mykonos town have recently been restored and are the best place to enjoy the view over the bay and island.

Of particular interest to those taking time to explore Mykonos is the Panagia Paraportiani church - actually five churches that have been built together over the centuries since the first one was built in the 1300s. This is said to be one of the most photographed churches in the world, thanks to its Cycladic vernacular architecture that is a sight to behold.

Mykonos is a lot more famous among the younger crowd though! Streets of boutiques to suit all tastes and budgets (perhaps on luxurious yacht charter holidays), restaurants that serve the best of Greek and Mediterranean cuisine. Nightclubs with top international DJs rocking the island until dawn.

It is a Mecca for beach holiday goers with a beautiful beaches like Platis Gialos Beach and Super Paradise Beach to relax and absorb the rays on, paddling in clean, shallow waters.

Explore Mykonos By Renting A Yacht

Thanks to its central position in the Cyclades islands, a Mykonos yacht charter is one of those where you are spoiled for choice where to go.

The Cyclades islands sit just off the Athenian Peninsula and as such you can sail both around the islands themselves or choose to head for the Saronic Gulf and its own islands. You can tailor your Greek yachting holiday according to your tastes as well. Partying all night isn't everyone's cup of tea - a luxury yacht charter can enable you to enjoy the pleasures of the day as much as those of the evening.

Human history has swept through the Cyclades for thousands of years and those in search of ancient ruins will not be disappointed. Relics of the Athenians, Ottomans and even Minoans can be found in different places. You can also avoid the loud crowd as you choose to anchor or moor your charter yacht in places that suit you more than they such as nearby Skiathos.

Younger generations will enjoy a boat rental too in your own way. Party islands such as Ios, Paros and Lefkada are big draws to that crowd, who can explore the different fun to be had sailing from island to island.

You don't need to stay in the Cyclades on a Mykonos sailing holiday. The Saronic Islands are a couple of days' island hopping away, as are the Dodecanese islands - both of which have quite different sub-cultures to those of the Cyclades.

How To Get To Mykonos

There are broadly three airports serving Mykonos - the island's airport itself as well as Athens and Santorini, both of which will require a ferry trip to get to the island.

Mykonos Airport

Just 4km from Mykonos Town, the airport is served by a number of European and international airlines. There are regular shuttle buses from there across the island or you can take a taxi.

Athens Airport

This major international airport has flights from all over the world, and is around five hours by bus and ferry from Mykonos

Santorini Airport

Several European and international airlines fly into this airport, and you can take a ferry onto Mykonos from there.

Marinas In Mykonos

There are two marinas in Mykonos - Tourlos Marina is the larger of the two that handles vessels of up to 25 metres. Mikonos Marina has only 30 berths but has the capacity to take a mega yacht of up to 40 metres.

Tourlos Marina:

This is the main yacht charter marina with boats for rent including catamaran , monohull sailing boat, motor yacht and RIBs on a bareboat or crewed yacht charter basis.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Mykonos

With its central location in the Cyclades islands, a Mykonos yacht charter (bareboat yacht charters or crewed yachtcharter) can allow you to island hop near and far.

7 days - the Cyclades: What do you want from a Greek yacht charter? The next island south in the chain is Naxos where Dionysus, the god of wine is meant to have been married. Over to Paros to the west, a party island at least as good as Mykonos. Over the ensuing days you can hit Ios (an island famed for its beach parties), and Sifnos as you explore these jewels of the Aegean Sea. For those who want to escape the busier areas, Serifos hasn't been tainted by tourism so you will find something quite authentic once you have climbed the steep hill into the main cliff top town.

14 days - Island chain hopping: With 14 days you can stretch your sea legs a bit and sail well beyond the Cyclades themselves. In the first couple of days you can sail through the Cyclades and then head off west to the Peloponese and then the Saronic Islands before heading north into Athens and then back to the Cyclades and to your marina. This is an opportunity to get out and explore the different sub-cultures of Greek island life, as well as get a taste for the capital city Athens as you go.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Mykonos

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht rental. The sea is cooler - often quite chilly - at the beginning of the sailing season but there is rainfall in Spring.

As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too. Combined with the crowds being smaller, this suggests that May to early June are the sweet spot for an Mykonos yacht charter.

Come September and October the seas are still like a warm bath.

Sailing Weather In Mykonos

April to mid-June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degree C range. There are sometimes gentle southerly winds, through these are replaced by ever stronger N-NW Meltemi winds that are rarely hazardous but make for exciting sailing at times.

Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat! Temperatures are from the 30s with recent hot days exceeding 40.

September-October: The seas remain warm and the Meltemi eases. These months can be the best time of year to sail as the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid-20s.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

The main marina is Tourlos Marina that serves smaller vessels of up to 25m while Mikonos Marina has just 30 berths but can take yachts of up to 40m.

Given the large crowds, fierce heat and often feisty Meltemi winds in July and August, there are better times to do a yacht charter. We would suggest late May when the land is green, water is plentiful and the winds lighter. You also shouldn't struggle to get a berth in a marina!

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.
