TESTIMONIALS

What our crew say.

TYS Recruitment are fantastic, I had the pleasure of working with Ciara and she is without a doubt the friendliest, most attentive agent I’ve worked with she put time into finding me my perfect position and was consistent with her messages so I never felt out of the loop, she is just an all round lovely person to speak with. Ciara still continues to follow up with me even after she found me my perfect position, keeping it professional but with a personal touch. I cannot recommend TYS and Ciara enough so thank you

Taryn has been exceptional in every step of the process from the initial reach out to the phone interview and to my placement in my current position. She was extremely informative about the position and the boat and continued to check in with me throughout the final interview and even as I am still on board. She really did find the perfect “home” for me with the boat, crew, Captian and owners. You have an amazing lady working for you and I can’t thank her enough for making this such an awesome experience!

I got in contact with Eloise at TYS Recruitment regarding a temp job. The communication with Eloise was outstanding. She quickly picked up my contact and she gave me a good overview of what the job implied. She made sure that both parties were happy with each other. I would highly recommend her as she has a very friendly and positive approach. She doesn’t hold you on the line and she cuts to the chase, which is very appreciated in this industry.

What Our Clients Say

The Yacht Stew Recruitment is the best recruitment agency I have worked with, I can highly recommend them. I recently needed to recruit a stewardess for a third interior in my team and was looking for a very specific person to fit our boat. Gemma and her team made this process so easy and left no stone unturned. They immediately knew what I was looking for and they really narrowed it down to great quality candidates. They checked in with me continuously following up on the stewardess they have placed for us.

My experience with TYS Recruitment has been absolutely amazing. The amount of CV’s that came through, the way everything was laid out was highly efficient. Eloise constantly stayed on top of everything and even helped the green stews to understand their joining contract and SEA. Just amazing! TYS Recruitment most definitely stands out as my preferred agent.

I asked TYS Recruitment to assist me in the hiring of a new stew. The team didn’t waste anytime diving in and asking me what kind of Stew I’m looking for and about the program of the vessel. The detail and time spent ensuring the candidates put forward were a complete match was evident. I gained a wonderful new Stew who fitted in very well. They were professional at all times and ensured I was comfortable and happy throughout the whole process. I will not hesitate to use The Yacht Stew again in the future!

We are looking for a Chef with an excellent background in private cheffing who wishes to be land-based. With an opportunity to create balance between your work and social life, this role is perfect for someone who wishes to bring their skillset shore-side, whilst still working for UHNW clients within a luxury environment.

– Food wise, they are looking for Ottolenghi style food and service will normally be plated or buffet. The Principal's are very health orientated so dishes such as big colourful salads would be desired.

They are looking for a candidate who is ready to take on more responsibility.

– Service style will depend, if it is just the principals in residence, there will be a nice mix of more relaxed service as well as a need to provide a more formal setting for events.

– This is an exciting time to join with lots of opportunities as the property moves into the operational phase. The role will start ideally asap to allow time for things to fully be set up before the summer season.

– Lovely, creative principals who have a balanced life, mixing some exciting events and hosting as well as more peaceful periods.

– There is a wider team onsite, made up of various different departments – with other staff also coming from a yachting background.

– Salary will be discussed at interview stage and is depending on experience, but is a good package.

– The work schedule will most likely be Thursday to Monday with some flexibility required.

– Staff will be given the UK standard leave package of 28 days off a year as well as the additional 2 days off during each week.

– Longevity will be rewarded, with an additional day of leave added for each year of employment. There is also a pension scheme and training is offered.

Careers in the superyacht industry

A superyacht is defined as any leisure yacht over 24 metres (79 feet) in length. There are many hundreds of superyachts sailing the seas and oceans today – motor or sail, and they employ thousands of crew members from around the world.

Owning or chartering a multi-million-pound superyacht is an exclusive hobby, but behind the glamorous, façade, there is a whole team of skilled workers keeping everything ship-shape. The number of superyachts being built is increasing each year, and there is now a shortage of skilled workers to crew them. Working on a superyacht is certainly not a holiday, but the rewards can be generous and it’s a great way to see the world in style.

Read on to find out all you need to know about what careers are available, the training and certification you will need and more.

Superyacht UK 2019 AGM St Katharine Dock London

Training and qualifications

We outline likely requirements in the job descriptions below, or follow the link here to learn about key areas of superyacht training and certification that you can consider.

The Captain of any yacht (large or small) has one primary duty, which is the safe manning and operation of the yacht. This includes taking full responsibility for the crew, the tenders  and toys, and the guests. Every crew member falls under the ultimate command of the Captain.

Captain on superyacht bridge

Chief Engineer

The Chief Engineer is in charge of the engineering department and is responsible for its safe and efficient operation. He or she reports directly to the Captain. As well as managing the Engineers, Electricians and ETOs (Electronic Technical Officers), the Chief Engineer has overall responsibility for the engineering department.

First & Second Officer

All superyachts generally have a First Officer on board, but larger yachts would employ a Second Officer as well. The roles are quite similar, but specific duties are likely to vary from one yacht to another.

Superyacht first officer at outside bridge

Chief Steward/Stewardess

A Chief Steward or Stewardess is most likely an experienced crew member who has progressed to this higher-ranking role. They are in charge of the interior of the yacht and manages and recruits the interior staff (such as Stewards and Housekeepers). They report directly to the Captain.

Chief Stewardess on a superyacht

On a superyacht, regardless of the size, the food is one thing that a charter guest or an owner will always remember. The Chef plays an incredibly important role and is one of the key figures on board.

Engineer/Assistant Engineer

The main function of the Engineer is to maintain the mechanical and electrical operations of the yacht.  This position will entail very large, complicated jobs, and it can, at the same time, incorporate something as small as fixing a remote control for guests, or fixing a toilet.

Superyacht engineer

Technical Officer/Electrician

Electronic Technical Officers (ETOs) and/or Electricians are generally employed on larger superyachts where the Engineering department comprises around four or five crew. In some instances one person may fulfil both roles, or there may be different individuals for each. If there is no ETO or Electrician on board, their responsibilities would fall to the Engineer. ETOs and Electricians usually report to the Chief Engineer.

Steward / Stewardess

The most important aspect of the Steward/ess role is his/her attention to detail.  This type of position requires the ability to think ahead, provide a service before the guest makes the request and to anticipate events before they happen. Most importantly, you must exhibit the ability to discreetly serve guests in a luxury 6-star manner.

Superyacht stewardess

Second Chef/Sous Chef

On larger yachts, you will often find a Second Cook/Sous Chef who works along side a Chef.  This person will normally bear all responsibilities in cooking for the crew, side work for meal preparation, and assisting the Chef in any variety of ways.  A new-to-industry individual who aspires to be a professional yacht chef will greatly benefit from holding an assistant position.

The Bosun, sometimes known as the Leading Hand or Senior Deckhand, is likely to be an experienced Deckhand who is able to take on extra responsibilities. The Bosun is responsible for maintaining the exterior of the yacht immaculately and is in charge of the Deckhands.

Superyacht bosun

A deckhand is the entry level for almost all professional crew jobs on superyachts. The deckhand position will encompass many responsibilities, but most importantly, he/she will maintain the exterior of the yacht and keep it in pristine condition at all times. You could be the only deckhand on board, but on larger superyachts there may be as many as five or more deckhands working.

SALARY ADVICE

superyacht industry jobs

Wanting to get a job in the superyacht industry?

Let us guide you in how to get started..

You’ve binged on ‘Below Deck’ in lockdown and now you want to get a job on a yacht.

Does this sound familiar?

If you’re serious about trying to get a job in the superyacht industry, then read on.

When asked about how to go about getting into the yachting industry, the advice is as follows.

Working in yachting can be lucrative , and offer a potentially long-term career , but it can also be a difficult industry to break into – and that’s where Cara Lees Yacht Crew Ltd comes in. Securing a job on a superyacht is the objective, but if you’re unsure where to begin , it’s important to know what sort of yacht jobs are out there and which positions would be a good match for your skills, abilities, and personality. Have you experience in hospitality? Perhaps worked in Spa and beauty? Or maybe you’re a keen weekend sailor who works in an office.

Do your research

For example, not everyone is suited to a much larger crew size, say 35+, some prefer and thrive better in a more familial environment, whereby your crew do become “your family” so chasing after working on a 95m + may not be the ideal. Bigger is not always best!

Apart from having the necessary certificates to ‘break in’ to the industry you need to be a ‘people person’. Hard work, stamina, a good team spirit, great attitude, the willing to learn and a “no drama” approach will get you far. Do your research. Are you cut out for the lifestyle? It’s long hours and generally hard work but it can offer great rewards.

Job on a yacht

You then need to know what you can do to increase your chances of being taken on and we have the knowledge, experience, and expertise to help you do just that. There are lots of yacht jobs available out there, and it’s our job at Cara Lees Yacht Crew Ltd to help you find and secure the ideal job for you. We provide the expert help, you provide the enthusiasm and determination, and together we can achieve your goal.

Your journey into the super yacht industry starts here…

Prepare! Make sure you have the right training.

Taking the global pandemic and travel restrictions out of the equation for now, it can be a difficult task trying to break into the yachting industry at the best of times, but before looking at flights to jet off to the Cote d’Azur, Palma, Fort Lauderdale or further afield with your keen intentions to dock walk and get that job, your time and money must be spent in obtaining the relevant certificates.

It is imperative to have first completed the basic STCW safety training and obtain a Seafarers medical certificate, the most popular being the ENG1 which is issued by an MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) professional medic.

If your CV doesn’t list the STCW safety training and a Seafarers medical certificate, your chances of getting a job on a yacht are nil. A yacht crew recruiter cannot represent or consider you for any positions onboard without these certificates.

Cara Lees Yacht Crew

What is STCW?

STCW stands for Standards of Training, certification and Watchkeeping. STCW certification was created to promote safety of life and property at sea and to protect the marine environment. It establishes internationally accepted standards of training and certification of seafarers, ensuring that crew are qualified and fit for duties at sea.

It is a five-day course, and costs £1,050 and includes.

Personal Survival Techniques

Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting

Elementary First Aid

Personal Safety and Social Responsibility

Proficiency in Security Awareness

Prepare! Make sure you have the right training.

There are many training providers in various locations throughout the UK and overseas.

Cara Lees Yacht Crew Ltd are pleased to say that we are working in association with SALT Services , an MCA accredited STCW training provider based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

SALT Services delivers maritime education and practical training, providing up to date equipment and expert training to the highest industry standards compliant with all STCW training for professionals already working in or looking for a career in the maritime or super yacht industry.

The Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG 1)

You can get your Seafarers Medical Certificate from a doctor approved by the appropriate board – the most popular of these accreditations is the ENG 1 certificate , which is the British Seafarers Medical Certificate, and it must be obtained from a Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) approved medical professional.

The ENG 1 is a simple medical that involves the following.

It takes around 45 minutes to complete. You will need to take a form of ID (passport or driving licence) and any glasses you use for reading with you. The Doctor will measure your height, weight, blood pressure and ask for a urine sample, to check for diabetes. The medical is non-invasive.

Cara Lees Yacht Crew

The list of approved doctors in the UK and overseas can be found below.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/mca-approved-doctors-uk-based

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/mca-approved-doctors-overseas

Alternative Yacht Certificates of Medical Fitness

In addition to the popular ENG1 Seafarer Medical Certificate are several alternative yacht qualifications that are accepted. When mentioning crew medical certificates, it is easy to forget that the ENG1 is not the only accepted certificate of medical fitness for seafarers to secure a job on a yacht. This can be somewhat misleading, making it seem more difficult than necessary to secure the required yacht crew certificates.

Depending on the flag state of the yacht you intend to work on, there will be several alternative countries that you can get your bill of health from, with the ENG1 seafarer medical certificate simply signifying that the assessment is from a British-government-approved practitioner.

Yacht Training Courses for Yacht Chefs

In order to work as a yacht Chef , you will very likely already have an impressive array of culinary qualifications and experience gained from working on land

While we don’t recommend any specific culinary yacht training courses for yacht chefs, there is a certificate that is now required.

Cara Lees Yacht Crew

What is the Ship’s Cook Assessment?

The Ship’s Cook Certificate Assessment verifies that a candidate has been assessed by an accredited organisation and proves competency in the learning outcomes in Annexes 1 and 2 of  MCA MSN 1846 .

– It replaces the Merchant Shipping (Certificate of Ship’s Cooks) Regulations 1981, which have been revoked.

– It sets out the minimum training requirements for all ship’s cooks and catering staff. – New training prerequisites take religious requirements and practices into account as they pertain to food as well as duration and nature of the voyage. – The requirements relating to ship’s cooks do not apply to ships which: – only operate within 60 miles of a safe haven and, – ordinarily operate with fewer than 10 seafarers on board.

Who needs a Ship’s Cook Certificate?

Any Commercial Vessel that operates more than 60 miles from a safe haven and has 10 or more seafarers on-board  must  have at least one Ship’s Cook Certificate of Competency holding chef.

How do I get a Ship’s Cook Certificate?

If you want your Ship’s Cook Certificate of Competency, you will need to:

– undergo the Ship’s Cook Assessment an MCA-approved training organisation. – be 18 years old, or more. – have completed a minimum of one-month sea going service. – have completed the Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Firefighting, Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety as well as the Social Responsibility and Security Awareness STCW courses. – hold a current Seafarer Medical Fitness Certificate (ENG 1) or equivalent.

After completing all the above, you can apply for your certificate of competency from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

Level II Food Safety Certificate

More recently, yachts are also requesting and /or require interior crew, that being chefs, cooks, steward/stewardess, deck/stew etc who handle food and beverage on commercial (charter) yachts to have the Food Hygiene safety Level 2 certificate . While this is not mandatory on privately used yachts, it is certainly beneficial to have and may open some more opportunities for you.

Prior to the global pandemic, online food safety courses were not recognised by the MCA. However, they have confirmed recently that they do now recognise certain online courses that are accredited with the exam being invigilated remotely.

This ensures that you have completed the course and not someone on your behalf.

Make sure you choose wisely.

see the link below for the amendment

I’ve Got My Essential Yacht Certificates, What’s next?

Register with Crew agencies. There is a plethora of crew agencies out there but be sure to register with an MCA accredited agency. The full list of UK agencies can be viewed below

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/recruitment-and-placement-agencies-approved-by-the-mca

Let’s take the global pandemic out of the equation for now and the travel restrictions it brings. In a non-disrupted world, get yourself to the yachting hotspots .

Antibes and Monaco are the main hubs in the south of France, hop on the train and travel the short distance along the coast to San Remo in Italy. Palma de Mallorca also a very popular destination to ‘dock walk’.

“What is dock walking?” I hear you ask.

Dock walking is the process of walking the marina docks, going up to a yacht, politely requesting to speak with the crew on-board if the moment is suitable, (keep in mind the crew are at work) with the aim of trying to secure any of the following: day work, permanent work or to leave them with one of your CVs. Remember that this is your time to shine and create that first impression. Arriving by skateboard or longboard will probably not be received well. And certainly, do not smoke.

Make sure your appearance is smart. Polo shirt and shorts/trousers and clean shaven for the blokes and a polo shirt/ blouse and shorts or skirt is perfectly acceptable for the girls. Have your hair neatly tied back if it’s long and go easy on the make-up. It can be a difficult task to have to present yourself this way, but it is remarkable how many crew are hired ‘off the dock’.

It also gets you out there with other ‘yachtie hopefuls’ and although you are essentially competing against one another for jobs, a great element of camaraderie usually does ensue and chat amongst the dock walkers can give you leads to possible jobs to pursue.

Further Courses to Perhaps Consider

Once you have your essential yacht crew certificates, then there are a wide range of further yacht training courses that you could look at to help you to get that first break in your yachting career.

Training Courses for Deck Crew

Yacht Crew Jobs

Deck crew positions are highly competitive in the superyacht industry, as they are typically one of only two entry-level positions making this a department where additional yacht training courses will really help you to stand out from the crowd. Many captains want to see that you bring additional skills to the role, such as being able to drive a tender, operate Jet Skis, or being able to dive.

Some additional yacht training courses to consider include:

The RYA Powerboat Level II

The RYA Tender Operator

The RYA Yacht master Certificate

The RYA Competent Crew

PWC Personal Watercraft Proficiency

General GRP and Carpentry Repairs

If you are an entry level deckhand, I would strongly recommend that you complete the PWC watercraft, VHF radio and the RYA powerboat level II to give you further chance of gaining employment on deck. Of course, these courses are not restricted just to those wishing to work on deck. Often those working on a smaller yacht where there is a lot of cross over in the ‘department roles’ would be of great benefit to have the above courses completed also. Click on the following link to view other course options.

RYA Training Courses

Yacht training courses for yacht engineers.

In addition to the mandatory yacht training courses, yacht Engineers will also need to have completed the Approved Engine Course 1, or the AEC. The AEC is a 5-day course that will give you the theoretical knowledge, in addition to hands-on experience of diesel engines. This course is the first step towards a rewarding yacht engineer career , which will enable you to work in the dual role of Deckhand/Engineer. Once you have completed this yacht training course you can move onto the Approved Engine Course 2 , which builds on the knowledge learnt in the AEC 1 course and includes more practical experience. More advanced yacht training courses for those seeking to pursue a yacht Engineer crew include the MCA Engineering Officer of the Watch.

From advanced STCW training courses to department-specific courses, such as the GUEST or WSET courses for Stewards and Stewardesses to PADI Divemaster courses for the deck crew, there is sure to be a course that will help you to stand out above the crowd of other candidates.

I hope this has been of benefit in giving an insight as to where to start. If I can be of further assistance, please don’t hesitate to email, text, or call as I would be delighted to have a chat and expand more upon the above subject/s should you have any questions.

All the very best and good luck!

Find Out How To Stand Out From The Crowd

Meeting the Minimum Standards vs Being Prepared to Build a Successful Career

A successful career begins with more than meeting the training requirements and getting hired. Building a fruitful career requires planning, commitment and hands on experience. Although "learning on the job" is a common approach to building a career, it takes time, it involves a lot of mistakes and comes with a series of risks (to you and your vessel). It is no secret that there is a currently a massive skills shortage in the yachting industry which is contributing to a high crew turnover. We find the reason behind this clear: crew are entering the industry, largely unprepared.

This skills shortage provides an amazing opportunity for those who are willing to invest in themselves to stand out from the crowd. Savvy Maritime Academy is here for those who are willing to do so. Our training is geared towards fostering a successful and fulfilling career that gives you an edge by being able to hit the ground running.  By equipping individuals with the necessary skills, knowledge, and hands on experience, we ensure that graduates are properly prepared to excel in the industry.

Interior Crew IN Yacht Bridge

The Benefits of a Superyachting Career

Working on a superyacht can be an exciting and rewarding career choice, offering many benefits to crew members. However, it's important to be prepared for the demanding lifestyle and high expectations that come with working on a superyacht. A few key benefits of working in the industry can be found below:

  • Exciting Career paths that encourage progression for those who show commitment and are able to take on more responsibility.
  • Travel opportunities: Superyachts travel to some of the world's most beautiful and exotic locations, providing crew members with opportunities to explore new cultures and destinations.
  • Being part of a team: Superyacht crew members come from all over the world, creating a diverse and multicultural work environment.
  • No living expenses: Once you are employed and live onboard, your food accommodation (on board) is all paid for. This makes it a great opportunity to save money while working.
  • Build a strong work ethic: Working on a superyacht can be demanding and challenging, but it can also build a strong work ethic and valuable skills, such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.
  • Good salaries: Salaries for superyacht crew members are typically higher than those in the mainstream hospitality and maritime industries.

The Challenges of a Superyachting Career

While a career in yachting may seem glamorous, it does come with challenges. One of the main challenges can be the demanding nature of the job, with long hours and little time off during peak seasons on busy yachts.

Limited space and different personality types means that individuals need to be mindful of others, living and working in the same spaces for extended periods of time.

Job stability can be uncertain when compared to other industries, as the unique characteristics and demands of vessel owners can have an impact. No two yachts are the same and it is important to understand that certain yachts and positions are suited to different personality types. In addition to this, the industry can be competitive and difficult to break into, with many aspiring crew members vying for limited job opportunities.

It is essential to be both physically and emotionally prepared before entering the industry, not only to make a success of it, but more importantly to enjoy it!

How To Start a Superyachting Career

Be prepared.

The superyachting industry has some unique characteristics. Having a solid understanding of how  the industry works from a crew, owner, and business perspective, helps build a solid foundation upon which a career can be built upon. Valuable information will help you identify where you fit in and how you can make the most of this exciting opportunity.

Foresight and mental preparation are key to taking the right steps. We help build this solid foundation and are here to help guide you every step of the way.

Gain Relevant Experience

Gaining relevant experience prior to employment can be difficult. Practical skills and exposure take time and while learning "on the job" is a popular option, it slows down not only how quickly you can adapt but also progress.

At Savvy, our practical skills academy gives you enough time and exposure to important aspects of your job so that you can be proficient prior to joining. This means that you can hit the ground running and progress at a much faster rate. By learning from highly experienced crew, you are assured that you are a few steps ahead.

Depending on the position you want to apply for, you may need to obtain specific qualifications or certifications. All crew members are required to complete their STCW Basic training certification and hold a valid seafarer medical certificate . In addition to this, entry level deckhands are generally required to hold a powerboat license while interior crew are required to hold a Food Safety Level II certificate.

Qualifications required depend on the type of yacht (whether it is commercial or private, it's size, its flag state authorities etc.). We are here to ensure that you choose the best option.

Networking is crucial in the superyacht industry. Your communication skills and ability to form relationships is key. You never know when an opportunity will present itself. Always be ready to take advantage of them when they do come around. Stay composed, well presented and professional.

With Savvy, your networking starts with your training. We connect you to real industry professionals and key individuals.

Find Available Jobs

Once you have the necessary qualifications and experience, start applying for jobs. You can find job openings through recruitment agencies, job boards, and word of mouth (your networking is key here). Be prepared to go through in depth interview processes, as yacht owners and captains typically have high standards for their crew.

At Savvy we not only prepare you for your interviews but we also connect our students with job opportunities and often place students ourselves.

Progress Your Career

Being mentally prepared, having a plan and using the skills that you have built are essential. With the above, you will be able to learn from those above you at a faster rate and take on more responsibility before those who are less prepared. Investing in your skills from the start result in higher salaries in the future. It is up to you to decide whether you want to be a passenger in the team or a crew member that is able to step up to the opportunities when they present themselves. We have designed our courses with this in mind and have an abundance of knowledge to share with you.
