He’s got 699,000 followers in Instagram and has turned his passion for superyachts and social media into a full-time business. We meet TheYachtGuy, also known as Alex.

You’d think the person with arguably the biggest social following in the superyacht industry would have had a game plan in place from the very beginning. But, as the man himself tells me, “ @theyachtguy was created by accident”. When Instagram came along in 2010, this superyacht fanatic found a place to upload all the photos of superyachts he’d saved off the internet. “Once I realised I was gaining a following, I changed my name from an email address to ‘theyachtguy’. It was a great way to talk to and meet people with like interests.”

It wasn’t until TheYachtGuy met @watchanish (Anish) @thebillionaresclub (Ian and Alehandro) and @luxuryworldtraveler (Gil) and was given advice on how to turn a hobby into a business that TheYachtGuy took the steps to transform into what we see today.

And while TheYachtGuy has other social media channels, Instagram is the clear favourite. “I don’t know if Instagram is the platform, but it’s definitely the most popular social media platform to be on now, and it’s obvious the superyacht industry is starting to catch on. I see brokers and other industry professionals starting yacht feeds to push their products – everything from yachts to anchors.

“Instagram, for me, is where it all started. Sharing posts and seeing the interaction between followers keeps it interesting. The other platforms have tuned their sites to try and keep up bit it’s not the same.”

"Choosing photos is fun and it definitely takes some work."

But there’s still a long way to go. “When I first started using social media, it was a big joke, but now it’s taken a lot more seriously. But the industry still has the tables turned, spending more on print than on social media. If done correctly, social media will attract more than three times the readership.”

We all follow TheYachtGuy (and if you don’t, you should be), but what really makes a good photo? In the words of the man himself: “Clarity, colour and perspective are what I look for when I finally choose. Choosing photos is fun and it definitely takes some work. Making sure there’s a name that goes with the photos is the first thing. I’ll post an occasional generic shot but I prefer to use amateur photos.”

And one final word of advice from TheYachtGuy: “It seems like it’s been a mad dash to the front [of social media] from everyone. Which is good. If you want to survive in any industry, being able to adapt to the times is key.”

TheYachtGuy

Favourite yachts : “ Esther III , Cakewalk and the new Kometa , launching February 2016. But if I had to choose just one it would have to be High Power III (ex- Numptia ). She’s the perfect size and though she’s a few years old I still love her design both in and out.”

Funniest thing someone’s asked you to promote on Instagram? “A news feed that focused on women’s backsides. I had to decline.”

How Did Alex Jimenez Become “The Yacht Guy”

the yacht guy instagram

We met him, you’ve heard of him, and now it’s everyone’s chance to get to know him… Alex Jimenez, Aka The Yacht Guy , has created quite the following in the superyacht industry. From living the normal life to networking with UHNW individuals and travelling the world, Alex has created a lifestyle for himself that many dream of, and it’s time to find out how:

You’re very respected in the world of yachting, have you always worked as an influencer?

AJ: No, I wasn’t always an influencer though I wish I had been. Life’s a lot more fun as one (laughs). I became an influencer full-time back in 2014. Prior to TheYachtGuy, I held a regular job as a brain surgeon…I wish!!! Nope, just a regular guy, not that I’m not now, but you know what I mean. Becoming an influencer has allowed me some great experiences I would have probably never had.

How did you end up becoming a public figure in such a niche industry? And, have you made any friends in particular that have inspired you throughout your journey?

AJ: I have achieved this through Instagram and many years of making connections, networking and meeting some fantastic people. I’ve been fortunate with what I have been able to do .

What would you say is the hardest part of your day-to-day life?

AJ: Staying focused on goals can be tough with everything else that’s going on around you. Family, friends, bills, etc. In the end, I’m just a regular guy trying to make my way.

You’ve successfully achieved recognition as the No.1 yacht influencer globally. Do you have any further aspirations within yachting that you’d like to achieve? If so, what do they entail?

AJ: Thank you! Well, it has become more challenging over the years with so many people now turning their yacht profession into yacht influencers, from brokers to yachties; it’s great to see everyone’s perspective. As for aspirations, the biggest one is to own a yacht big enough to allow me to travel the world but small enough that I don’t need a crew. Then head out and enjoy cruising.

If this was to happen, what would you name it?

I’d name it “POEME” after my daughter ❤️

What’s the most memorable experience that you’ve had, courtesy of being an influencer?

AJ: It’s funny because at some moments not only was I not allowed to take pictures, but I was kindly asked to not even mention yachts for both safety and privacy to the owner, which I was totally okay with. But let’s say having a private jet pick you up in your small hometown and being flown out onto one of the world’s largest yachts to hang with what turned out to be some of the coolest laid-back people I’ve ever met was one for my record books.

Could you share your top tips for anyone aspiring to become a social media influencer?

AJ: I’d say do something you absolutely love because it shows in you. When people meet you, and you’re doing something for money or to be Insta-famous, it’ll show through…

The Lonely Life of a Yacht Influencer

Alex Jimenez (aka TheYachtGuy) might look like he’s comfortably residing in the lap of luxury on Instagram, but the truth is, he’s kinda lost at sea

While chasing a 2017 story about medical tourism and Slovakian stem cells that had already taken me to hospital facilities in Bratislava and Vienna, I wound up partying on a 283-foot yacht floating in the French Riviera. As I watched intoxicated rich people having expensive fun in their cheap white shower slippers — first rule of yacht club is there are no shoes on the yacht, which are instead piled in a big heap at the yacht’s entrance — I began to wonder, “How could anyone spend their whole life doing this?”

Then, almost on cue, seated at a table on the rear deck with Lindsay Lohan and her entourage, I spotted a dude who had, in fact, spent his entire life doing this. Alex Jimenez was a professional yacht influencer, and he was hard at work.

I didn’t know that at the time, of course. I just saw an open chair next to a lanky guy wearing a loose polo shirt and a flat-brimmed Yankees hat, and sat down in it. As everyone else gradually made their way toward the raucous festivities taking place on the foredeck, Jimenez struck up a conversation with me. He remarked that I seemed both thoughtful and decidedly out of place.

the yacht guy instagram

“I’m working,” I said. “I never stop working. All I can think about is work.”

“Hey, me too,” he replied. “I’m working right now.”

“I used to feel all messed up about my career,” he continued. “I was a short-haul truck driver in the Bronx, and I guess I caught the yacht bug. I’d go to a bookstore, grab a table and read everything I could about yachts. Then, on the very first weekend after I downloaded the Instagram app, right after Instagram became a thing you could download, I went to a luxury boat show and took some of pictures of the yachts. I added some hashtags, and pretty soon I had 800,000 followers. But the quantity doesn’t really matter to the folks who pay me, it’s the quality. Influential people follow me, Gulf state princes and Russian moguls who might actually be able to buy these yachts.”

Wait, what?

When Jimenez said that he was working, I assumed he was “working” the same way Lindsay Lohan was — that is, “working the crowd.” He looked important enough, wearing an expensive, custom-made watch with all of the wheels, ratchets and levers exposed.

“Nah, I’m nobody you’d know,” he assured me. “I’m here to take some pictures and post some video stories of the yacht, which a brokerage group is trying to sell. The watch is a loaner from a friend. I wear it, take a picture of my wrist and tag his company on my Instagram account. It’s just a small part of the hustle.”

The yacht hustle, I soon learned, was the all-consuming passion of Jimenez’s life. He went from a guy who took Instagram pictures, always head-on yacht shots run through one of the generic filters, to a guy that yacht brokers paid to stay on their yachts in order to mention that said yachts were docked in a port and available for sale or charter. He was helicoptered from yacht to yacht, and slept in the smallest guest cabins.

“The yacht we’re on right now used to be a cruise ship that they retrofitted,” he told me. “You can sleep a dozen or more people on here, and the decks can fit a bunch more, but it’s all kind of crowded.”

I mentioned that the bathrooms were both tiny, and with a hundred or so people aboard the yacht, already rather foul.

“Yeah, that’s just how it goes,” he said. “It’s an endless party, especially on the yachts that are 200 feet and up, the so-called ‘superyachts.’ Conditions are cramped, everyone’s out of their mind on some substance, and the bathrooms are being used for who knows what. There’s a kitchen and a big dining area, but good luck getting food out of there when you really want it. You’re not on here to eat a sit-down meal, even though they usually have nice dining rooms. The bars on each level are the focal points of these things.”

We took a walk around the yacht while people boozed and bumped into each other, their words slurring together and distorted further by the deep bass thump of the music playing from the upper and lower decks. Jimenez’s own cabin was indeed tiny, very nearly a capsule hotel. He showed me the heavy-duty metal suitcase where he secured his borrowed valuables, a collection of watches on loan from various business acquaintances.

“The watches are heavy on the wrist,” he said. “They’re great to look at, but their bands often cut into the wrist. And yeah, the room is small, but with my nocturnal schedule, it’s not like I sleep very much. I take maybe one picture a day and post a few Instagram stories, but I’m expected to be up on the deck, mingling with partygoers and selling the mystique of the yacht.”

Jimenez leveled with me — once upon a time, he had been excited by the idea of partying on a yacht. After all, who wouldn’t be? But now he was basically just a working stiff. He too had a home and a family, with kids he didn’t see as much as he could because his “feet were never on dry land.”

He had considerable yacht expertise and knew all the major players in the yacht world, buyers and sellers and their glorious boats. He had been on the 100-foot yachts and the 500-foot yachts, and seen yacht-related activities he assured me exceeded any fantasies, dark or light, that I could ever imagine. Yet all that meant he was now just another yacht worker, someone who punched the clock — or the pearl-faced wristwatch, in his case — the same as the kitchen staff, the bartenders and the yacht’s crew.

View this post on Instagram Here's me and Lindsey Lohan A post shared by Ralph Moffettone (@ralphmoffettone) on May 20, 2017 at 12:13pm PDT

“You’ve seen the crew,” he told me. “It’s about 30 people on this yacht, and they’re Greek and serious as a heart attack. Nine times out of ten, the crews on these yachts are either Greek or Russian. The rich people that staff these yachts talk at length about whether it’s better to go with one or the other. They can make pretty decent money, and on a 500-footer with a 60 or 70 person crew, you’re probably talking $5,000 or $6,000 a month plus room and board.”

After years of yacht influence, the true appeal of high-class maritime life had become clear to Jimenez. “You have to be really rich to own one of these,” he said. “I mean, you have to be so rich to own a yacht that’s 300 feet or more. You can’t be rich like LeBron James, because that’s nothing. You can’t be rich like Tiger Woods or Johnny Depp. They’re not rich in super-yacht terms. We’re talking 10 percent or more of the purchase cost of the yacht paid out in upkeep every month. The brokerages and buying groups can swing it because there’s a bunch of investors, and because they charter the yachts to offset costs.

“But for the guy who owns the Eclipse [ Roman Abramovich , a Russian oligarch], that’s not the point. He’s not chartering that thing out. It has a submarine and a missile detection system. See, the power of owning a magnificent yacht like that is in how you’re telling the world that you’re beyond buying and selling. You have more money than there is money to have. You’ve transcended. There are no frontiers left for you on dry land. I mean, true peace is only at sea .”

Jimenez, a poor Puerto Rican kid, grew up hustling. He worked 50- and 60-hour shifts at whatever job he had; he considered overtime to be a necessary part of his base pay and counts himself among those annoying grinders who dismiss 40 hours of work per week as a “ part-time job .” He now made a “comfortable middle-class living,” but sitting there with me in the cabin, fretted that it could go away at any time. “This is me working a little network I’ve built using someone else’s social media platform,” he said. “If Instagram changes its algorithm slightly, there goes a bit of my business. If Instagram disconnects some of the tools I use to build and monitor my account, there goes a bit of my business. And if Instagram goes away and is replaced by something newer and better, I need to get there first, just like I did with this account. If I don’t, I’m done. I’m totally dependent on a platform that’s completely out-of-control.”

For Jimenez, Instagram is essentially a money tree that must be fertilized and harvested as much as possible before its popularity wanes. As another side hustle, he “plants” subsidiary yacht accounts, accounts with soundalike names and images, and uses cross-promotion from his primary account to grow them until they’re large enough to sell to yacht brokers or manufacturers. “I build them up and then sell them off, and my client gets a ready-made account that has real followers and legitimate engagement,” he told me. “I started focusing on that when I realized that this wasn’t just a ‘life of the party’ job, that pushing social media is something you do all day and all night long.

“I fire off these posts while I’m sitting around on the yacht, when things are very slow. I’m not in this for the fun of it, I’m not posting silly stuff. I basically do sponsored advertisements that follow a set format. I watch Instagram like a hawk to see if anything is hampering the growth of these other accounts, and to see if I’m continuing to get the activity I need on my primary posts.”

After surveying his cabin, Jimenez and I walked to the side deck and slouched over the railing. The sun had set, and we studied the well-lit coastline of Cannes . “If you could have anything at all, anything in the world, what would you want?” he asked me.

“I guess I’d want to keep writing and keep getting paid for it,” I responded.

“Well, I want to own a yacht,” Jimenez said. “I used to just want to be on yachts, because I thought the parties were cool and the technology was awesome, but now that I’ve spent a good portion of my life partying on them, I actually want to own a yacht. Owning a yacht, really owning it in full and being able to pay for its upkeep, means that you’ve somehow freed yourself from work and want. If you own the yacht that way, you’re a free man. The hustle and grind are things of the past.”

I asked him if he had plans to leave the yacht while we were in the French Riviera.

“No, I’m going to hang back here, because I’m scheduled to be on another one of these yachts tomorrow,” he said. “I know pretty much every boat in this harbor — owners, captains, specifications. People say, ‘Alex, you’re on yachts all day — that’s the life.’ Well, for me, it’s not the life, it’s my life. It’s not some permanent summer or year-long vacation. It’s my living. I help rich people and rich companies advertise their yachts. I’ve got all this knowledge that I gained when I loved yachts so much that I’d spend all weekend studying them for free, and now, I sell my knowledge to people. I sell that know-how all day long, and everything I know is worth something. I’m always on the clock, always tracking my time on these expensive wristwatches with the big clock faces. And so, I’m sure to never set foot on dry land when I’m working.”

The extravagant life of Gianluca Vacchi, the Italian millionaire with an 11 million-strong Instagram following who now has his sights set on acting

50-year-old multimillionaire entrepreneur Gianluca Vacchi is not your average Instagram star — he's certainly done things his own way.

Having retired from a career in business, the silver-haired, tattooed Italian took social media by a storm last year when a video he posted of himself dancing on holiday with his partner at the time went viral.

He has since gained a huge Instagram following — over 11 million — with whom he shares his outrageously lavish lifestyle aboard private jets, yachts, and fast cars.

Business Insider spoke to Vacchi after he'd just touched down in Italy to wish his mother a Merry Christmas.

Scroll down for a sneak peek inside the extravagant world of Gianluca Vacchi.

This is 50-year-old Gianluca Vacchi, the multimillionaire entrepreneur known to most people because of the lavish lifestyle he shares with his 11 million-strong Instagram following.

Business Insider caught up with Vacchi just after he'd just touched down in Italy to wish his mother a Merry Christmas before he jetted back to Miami to spend Christmas Day and New Year's Eve in the sunshine.

Vacchi shot to social media fame about a year and a half ago when he shared this video of himself dancing to Ricky Martin with his partner at the time Italian model Giorgia Gabriele while on holiday. It went viral.

The couple posted a series of videos in which they performed synchronised dances during the summer of 2016. They were viewed millions of times.

Vacchi told Business Insider his life so far can be be divided "very clearly" into two parts: the first one being his life "under the working point of view" which lasted until he was 45.

Vacchi said he went into the "family businesses" at the age of 25 after finishing his studies in economics. Along with his cousin, he took on some of his family's companies which were in need of deep restructuring and then once he'd turned them around, listed them on the stock exchange.

At 29, he said he decided to become a shareholder instead, and went into private equity, buying and selling companies in different sectors. And at one point had his fingers in pies across 12 or 13 different sectors.

"At 45 I realised that the world didn't have anything to give me anymore," he told BI. "I'm not interested in accumulating money at all any more, I'm only interested in what's moving my curiosity."

Vacchi said that while he no longer manages companies he still considers himself to be an entrepreneur as a shareholder. For example, he still owns a stake in his family's Bologna-based conglomerate IMA, which manufactures machines for the processing and packaging of pharmaceuticals and other products.

What really piqued his interest was the world of social media. Now, his Instagram account is a platform where he shows off his flamboyant personality through an array of brightly-coloured tailored suits, velvet slippers, and impressive pyjama collection.

"I wasn’t old enough not to be interested in the ways of dialogue between young people, and the ways of being entertained by young people," he said. He set his sights on understanding the way social media works and says it became "clear" that it was something he could be a part of.

Now, he likes to think of himself as a "global entertainer and celebrity."

"It used to be that the first thing people did was look at the newspaper, now they wake up and go on Instagram," he said. "People are more interested in other peoples' lives than their own. It is very strange, but it's like that."

Vacchi trains for over an hour each day, no matter where he is in the world, and often shares his workouts with his followers.

In the book, which came out in 2016, he writes about his decision to retire at 45, after his 20-year career.

His ostentatious lifestyle — known by the hashtag #gvlifestyle — certainly divides opinion, but one thing's for sure — a scroll through his feed is hugely entertaining.

The endless glamorous settings and parties — where you might catch him spinning vinyl with an anklet-adorned foot or doing a back flip off a yacht — make for compulsive viewing.

Dancing is a big part of his life, though he says he has never taken a dance class. "It's in my blood," he said.

Vacchi's dancing posts, often performed to Brazilian Baile Funk or Latino music, are still popular with his followers — and it's fair to say some are pretty infectious.

Dancing, he said, reflects just another portion of the philosophy on which he bases his lavish lifestyle and attracts people.

"You can do serious stuff even if you have an ironic or funny take on life," he said. "I do it spontaneously, if I listen to music it's just natural to me wherever I am, whoever I'm with."

Vacchi's Instagram is peppered with shots of him posing on private jets, of which he said: "I’m not scared of showing myself on a jet — if I do it's because I deserve to do it."

Breakfast..towards Zurich #gvlifestyle A post shared by Gianluca Vacchi (@gianlucavacchi) on Nov 24, 2017 at 12:01am PST Nov 24, 2017 at 12:01am PST

He told Business Insider that he likes to ride on private jets because they offer "more flexibility, more speed, and more comfort."

Asked about the obsession with the private jet lifestyle made popular by the likes of "Rich Kids of Instagram" and celebrities, he responded: "People are aiming [to have a] better quality of lifestyle, but what people often don't understand is that a picture [of someone] on a private jet is usually the result of something that you have done many years earlier."

Vacchi said while people out there project a different life online than their reality, that's not him. It's important to him and his young following that he is "coherent, with no mask or filter. I just show myself as I am."

"I never stay more than one week in the same place," he said. "For me being one week in the same place is already something strange, in the past it was different but now I'm constantly travelling."

And he always travels with plenty of Louis Vuitton and Mulberry luggage.

While he is often on the go, his two main bases are in Italy and Miami.

He told Business Insider: "All of my houses are different, depending on where they're located."

And this also applies to his outfit choices. "I have no one style, it all depends on my mood that day. It's the same with music [I play]."

Above, he's pictured in his "red passion suite" at his base in Milan.

Miami has also served as a base for him to launch his DJ career, and this year Vacchi released his first ever single, 'Viento.'

"I enjoy all kinds of music, deep house, Brazilian music," he told Business Insider — though you won't catch him playing techno as that doesn't match his "joyful" mood. "I don't want [to play] very flat boom boom boom music, I prefer strong drops."

Above he's pictured DJing at Mia Club. He'll play at Wall nightclub on Miami Beach on New Year's Eve, after which he'll probably fly to Colombia, then possibly the Bahamas.

In August 2017, Vacchi made headlines under less desirable circumstances. There were reports that he had had some of his assets seized to service debts.

The Independent cited reports from Italian tabloid Quotidiano which said Vacchi had had assets and shares seized over a £9.5 million (€10.5 million) debt.

The reports prompted some to react with delight on social media, mocking his flaunted life of luxury.

Yet he continues to show off a hedonistic lifestyle.

Vacchi averages hundreds of thousands of likes per photo on Instagram and millions of views of his videos, but the comments he receives are mixed.

Some are awestruck fans who post endless congratulatory emojis asking for more context on where he is, what he's doing, and who he's with, while others appear outraged at the extent of the extravagance lifestyle that he projects.

Either way, Vacchi doesn't appear to respond to many of them, good or bad.

So what's next for this 50-year-old retired entrepreneur, DJ, and Instagram star?

Vacchi told Business Insider he now has his sights set on acting.

"Why not? It would be very interesting in this second part of my life as a celebrity, DJ, producer, designer, why not even acting?" he said. "I’m already doing commercials now where I’m acting, I know that a movie is different but it's not so difficult when you're comfortable in front of the camera."

Ask Amy: I feel weird about all the texts my wife is getting from a guy in her running group

Dear Amy: My wife is an avid runner and usually runs on the weekends with a group of regulars.

Recently a man entered the group, and he seems to be reaching out to her a lot. This started with questions about running, but seems to have morphed into other areas. He always initiates texts, and she responds politely by answering his questions.

She is completely open, shows me everything, and often brings up to him that she has plans with her husband and kids. He then glosses right over this information and basically seems to be pretending that we don’t exist.

I am not at all concerned about my wife’s behavior but I’m a guy, she’s amazing, and I have a weird sense about this.

I’m not sure how to approach this weirdness. Do you have a suggestion?

– Hapless Husband

Dear Hapless: Talk to your wife about this, and ask her how she feels about this texting contact. Is it annoying or intrusive?

And then tell her, honestly, that it bothers you . Don’t make a big deal about it, and don’t insist that she needs to block him, but tell her: “I’m a guy, you’re amazing, and I think he’s into you. This concerns me because I’m a guy, you’re amazing, and I’m definitely into you.”

Dear Amy: I admire you so much when responding to people who disagree with your answers and who criticize you for stating something you didn’t say. I often wonder if you really want to say, “Listen &#@**, did you even read my answer?”

You are always so polite that I wonder if you are actually an AI, and not human. LOL!

Dear Fan : Lately, I’ve received many queries – some praising and others criticizing – all wondering if I am an AI bot.

I understand that the specter of artificial intelligence covers all bases, and that these comments are sardonic, but it is starting to creep me out. (LOL!)

Dear Amy, I am a 62-year-old man, needing advice regarding my daughter and 11-year-old granddaughter, who live across the country.

Eighteen months ago, I flew out to visit.

My granddaughter wanted a “yes” day where I would take her for a fun-filled day.

We had a fantastic time. I tried to shower her with love and attention.

Feeling a reconnection, with my daughter’s blessing, I purchased her a cellphone so we could stay in touch.

After the trip, I tried to reach out, only to be ghosted by my granddaughter.

I brought this up with my daughter, who cynically informed me that my granddaughter is quite busy and perhaps we could arrange for a monthly Zoom meeting. But I really had visions of talking one-on-one with this child, as I felt a growing bond which I wanted to nurture.

My daughter obviously wanted to supervise her phone calls, which I thought was controlling. She mailed me the phone back with a nasty letter. This upset me greatly.

It has been 18 months with no contact.

A Christmas or birthday present is always acknowledged with a short, curt text from my daughter – never my granddaughter.

My relationship has always been strained due to my divorce 25 years ago, but it was a fantastic visit and we got along quite well, so I am at a loss, Amy.

I go with the flow and am not a curmudgeon in any way.

Any advice on how to proceed?

– Distant Grandpa

Dear Distant : This visit went very well. But you live across the country. To your granddaughter, you are a nice old man whom she doesn’t know very well.

I don’t know of many adolescents who would be able to forge a one-on-one relationship with a distant grandfather over the phone. Kids generally prefer texting. Texting photos and funny memes back and forth from your phone to hers would have been a good way to establish a connection.

Your daughter’s suggestion for a regular Zoom meeting was a great one.

Your immediate assumption that she wants to “monitor” your contact is off-base. Most parents know that kids this age don’t easily dive into relationship-building; the parent’s presence on the video chat helps to move things along because they can prompt both the child and the elder into topics of mutual interest.

You have put a ton of pressure on this single visit to build one relationship and heal another, but even close and functioning families go through rough patches and miscommunications.

I hope you’ll keep trying to connect, and not take things so personally as you go.

O.J. Simpson, NFL star whose murder trial gripped the nation, dies of cancer at 76

O.J. Simpson , the former NFL star who was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife and her friend in a televised trial that gripped the nation, has died of cancer, according to his family.

"He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren," the family said in a statement posted on X . "During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace."

Reports circulated in February that Simpson had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and was in hospice care as he underwent chemotherapy. He denied that he was in hospice in a video posted on X, but did not address whether he'd been diagnosed with cancer.

“Hospice? Hospice? You talking ‘bout hospice?” he said in the video with a laugh, adding that he doesn’t know who started the rumors.

Orenthal James Simpson played 11 seasons in the National Football League and was known as "The Juice" to his fans, but his sports legacy was tarnished forever in the 1990s after his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman were killed.

O.J. Simpson of the Buffalo Bills breaks away from Steeler tacklers in 1975.

Brown Simpson, 35, and Goldman, 25, were found stabbed to death outside her Los Angeles home in 1994.

On June 13, 1994, Goldman was returning sunglasses that the mother of Brown Simpson had left at a restaurant where he worked. The two were stabbed and slashed dozens of times, and their bodies were found the next day.

When Los Angeles police officers went to Simpson's home to speak to him about the slayings, Simpson did not answer the door but officers noticed a trail of blood leading to his car, as well as blood on his car.

Once a revered athlete, Simpson went from a Hall of Fame icon to a murder suspect.

Days later, officials charged Simpson with the murders and he attempted to evade arrest, resulting in an infamous hourslong police chase along Southern California's highways in his white Ford Bronco .

Simpson's case went to trial in 1995 and was broadcast to millions of viewers across the nation. The court case was dubbed the "trial of the century" as it dragged on for months and transformed into a public spectacle.

Feelings over the trial have remained mixed over the years, with many accusing the Los Angeles Police Department of racism in its handling of the case. Others believe that Simpson's ability to retain high-powered attorneys allowed him to get away with murder.

A white Ford Bronco, driven by Al Cowlings and carrying O.J. Simpson, is trailed by police cars as it travels on a southern California freeway in Los Angeles on June 17, 1994.

The trial made prosecutors Christopher Darden and Marcia Clark household names, in addition to Simpson's defense attorneys Johnnie Cochran, Alan Dershowitz and Robert Kardashian.

He was acquitted of both murders in a controversial verdict. Two years later, he was found civilly liable for wrongful death in the double homicide case.

Despite his acquittal in the criminal trial, many still believed Simpson was guilty, a belief bolstered by a jury ordering him to pay $33 million to Goldman's family in the civil case — damages that were never paid in full.

O.J. Simpson holds up his hands before the jury after putting on a new pair of gloves similar to the infamous bloody gloves during his double-murder trial in Los Angeles on June 21, 1995.

Goldman's father, Fred Goldman, spoke to NBC News by phone Thursday and described Simpson's death as "no great loss."

“The only thing I have to say is it’s just further reminder of Ron being gone all these years," he said. "It’s no great loss to the world. It’s a further reminder of Ron’s being gone.”

Bob Costas, the sports broadcaster who worked with Simpson for years at NBC Sports covering the NFL, said Simpson leaves behind “a complicated legacy, to put it mildly.”

“I can’t think of anyone historical or someone that we may have known where the first chapter and the second chapter of their lives are such a stark contrast … revered and then reviled,” Costas said on NBC’s “TODAY” show Friday.

In 2007, Simpson led an armed robbery attempt of a sports memorabilia dealer in Las Vegas. He argued in court that he was recovering his own stolen items, but his defense failed to sway the jury.

O.J. Simpson sits during a break on the second day of an evidentiary hearing in Clark County District Court in Las Vegas on May 14, 2013.

He was convicted and sentenced to 33 years in prison, of which he served only nine before he was released on parole .

Simpson spoke to The Associated Press by phone in 2019 , telling them that he was healthy and happy living in Las Vegas. He maintained that he believed his robbery conviction was unfair, but said: “I believe in the legal system and I honored it. I served my time.”

The Simpson murder trial was re-enacted and relitigated decades later in FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” an installment of the network’s popular “American Crime Story” series in 2016. Released that same year was the Academy Award-winning documentary "O.J.: Made in America," detailing Simpson's rise and fall.

Simpson was born in San Francisco and raised in public housing, going to a local community college before transferring to the University of Southern California. He was part of the school's national championship in 1967 and earned the Heisman Trophy the next year.

He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 1969 as a No. 1 overall pick.

According to NBC Sports , Simpson was the first player in the league to rush for 2,000 or more yards in a season and is considered the best running back of his era.

Simpson had three children from his first marriage to Marguerite Whitley, one of whom died in a drowning accident as a toddler.

He also shared two children with Brown Simpson.

Following her murder and his acquittal, Simpson won custody of their shared children and moved to Miami with them. His custody fight with his former-in-laws also drew headlines as the children's grandparents took him to court in a bitter legal battle.

Ryan Gosling Is Making These $20 Hats a Whole Thing

By Evan Malachosky

Ryan Gosling in his favorite Caterpillar hat.

All products are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission.

These days, everything Ryan Gosling wears turns to menswear gold (or, in the case of Ken, maybe a light shade of spray-tan orange). The bomber jacket he wore in Drive is a now-infamous grail . The high-end running sunglasses he wore on a recent press blitz sold out faster than you can say “on your marks”. And his obsession with King & Tuckfield’s polos helped turn the brand into one of Hollywood’s premier knit whisperers .

So when Gosling appeared in a promo video for last week’s episode of Saturday Night Live , which he hosted alongside musical guest Chris Stapleton , we figured his bright blue trucker cap, curiously emblazoned with the logo of the American construction company Caterpillar, was long gone, or a one-off vintage find. Luckily for you, we were woefully mistaken—and it’s not the first time Gosling fooled us.

Trademark Cap

As it happens, the actor’s SNL cap is part of a vintage-inspired collection CAT dreamed up for The Fall Guy, the silly-goose action flick starring Gosling and Emily Blunt, set to hit theaters in May. Gosling is a reliably good sport when it comes to singing for his projects, but his commitment to CAT’s retro truckers extends far beyond the usual promotional duties.

We first clocked him wearing one way back in November, but were too distracted eyeballing his boots to think much of it. Then we noticed him wearing another CAT hat to this year’s Oscars rehearsal , and our interest was piqued. The guy clearly loves ‘em, an only slightly-odd penchant for an A-lister who’s probably never stepped foot on a construction site when you consider his peers’ infatuation with double-knees and work jackets .

The Director Hat

Outside of the retro-leaning caps CAT designed for The Fall Guy, the brand’s hats are a little hit and miss. A few skew micro-brewery-esque (and not in a cool way), and we’d steer clear of any that feature the American flag. But plenty of others are just as ruggedly no-nonsense as you’d expect, an authenticity that’s made the brand a surprisingly frequent fashion world presence via collaborations with the likes of Heron Preston and John Elliott.

If Ryan Gosling’s track record is any indication, The Fall Guy might just inspire the “ He is literally me ” crowd to swap their Yankees caps for CAT truckers—and for once, you could do a lot worse than following their lead.

Yacht Charters in Greece Report Unusually High Number of Bookings

Summer 2024 is busier than usual in the Mediterranean, especially with the limited offer of crewed yacht charters. First-choice motor yachts report a 65% booking rate, while catamarans are up to 73% booked. The remaining dates are being snapped up fast.

United States - April 12, 2024 —

the yacht guy instagram

The team at MyGreekCharter is raising an alarm—if planning to wait until the last minute to book a charter, it might be too late.

“Unlike vacation rentals, the supply is virtually unlimited, and yachts are limited by available docking space in marinas. Having a yacht in a summer hotspot with docking space and charter rights is becoming increasingly more difficult,” says Daniel Asmus, owner of DMA Yachting.

For those yearning for a lavish summer getaway, the advice is to plan without delay, as the prime booking window is swiftly closing.

Key Market Trends for the 2024 Greek Yacht Charter Market

  • The development of new marinas is progressing slowly, restricting the overall yacht capacity.
  • Summer season kicks off almost 3 weeks earlier and ends 3 weeks later (April-October)
  • Luxury tourism has grown 87% since Covid.
  • The charter season is extending, starting in April this year, marking an earlier onset than in previous years.

Winter 2024/25 is filling up as well in the Caribbean

6 months earlier than in previous years, Caribbean charters are reporting 40% complete. The Caribbean, particularly the British Virgin Islands (BVI), is witnessing an uptrend similar to Greece. Mo Pristas from CharterGuru has reported unusually high bookings in the BVI, while Bahamas Motor Yachts reports a noticeably prolonged 2024 summer charter season.

The Average Value of Crewed Charters Has Been Growing

Motor yachts are at the forefront of this growth, with this yacht category experiencing a 30% increase in the average expenditure per charter since 2021. This increase reflects a robust demand and a shift in consumer preferences towards more luxurious and extended yacht charters.

An additional factor to the increase of the charter amount is simply the increased size and value of the available yachts, which have grown from a 70’ average to a 98’ average since 2021.

The Increasing Number of New Yachts Entering the Market Is Causing Concern About Industry Overload

The rate at which new yachts are being introduced into the market is accelerating. While older yachts aren’t being replaced but refurbished to extend service life, the overall number of yachts is rapidly increasing. This growth puts pressure on an already strained infrastructure, sparking debate among industry experts about the potential for overcrowding and its limits.

The available docking space nevertheless limits this increase in supply. Greece is reporting huge issues with marina availability as new developments are being delayed.

Charterers Are Looking for Less Crowded Charter Areas

The iconic Cyclades Islands continue attracting visitors for their historical and aesthetic appeal, but the hype has consequences, and tourists are looking to less crowded alternatives. Lesser-known destinations like Antiparos , Anafi , Ikaria , Kythira , and Nisiros are gaining traction as travelers seek quieter, more unique experiences away from mainstream tourist hotspots. Greece's diverse coastline, sailing conditions, and enormous charter fleet offer many charter options. A little research goes a long way, with an opportunity to explore more authentic and unspoiled destinations in Greece.

Keanu reeves kisses girlfriend alexandra grant with eyes open again, keanu reeves kisses girlfriend with eyes open ... let me get a look at ya.

Keanu Reeves sure is a one-of-a-kind guy -- and that goes for his relationships ... just ask his girlfriend, who receives eyes-wide-open smooches from him ... in public too, no less.

The actor hit up a fancy-schmancy event over the weekend with his significant other, Alexandra Grant , where they were dressed to the nines for an art gala in L.A. ... and while they were posing for camera together, Keanu and Alexandra shared a little PDA.

They gave each other a little peck of a kiss on the lips ... but what caught everyone by surprise was the fact that KR was wide-eyed and looking right at AG's up-close face.

Alexandra, for her part, kept her eyes closed during the kiss ... y'know, like most people do

No word on why Keanu kept his peepers open for the intimate moment -- but here's the funniest part ... this ain't even the first time he's done this! Indeed, the dude has been seen kissing Alexandra with eyelids peeled back before ... notably, about a year ago to the day.

Maybe there's just something about Spring that gets Keanu on high alert and wanting to see the world around him ... or, maybe there's just something about Keanu. Probably the latter.

Remember, this is the same guy who always has his arms extended when he poses for photos with women who aren't his honey ... ever the gentleman, eccentric as he may be.

Gotta love the guy! And you gotta see him too. 😅
