My new IOM design.

I have started IOM with Craig Smith wide beam TS2 and really loved it and race it for 3 or 4 years before I switched. What a boat that TS2 - not the fastest but god what a cracking boat to helm and in good hand can still do well against newer design as long as the wind was strong enough to heel the boat a little. My last IOM was a Ian Vicker's design the V6 built by Pepe Vanixia and it was bullet proof and like the TS2 a very dry boat. Again what a cracking boat with which I built about 7 rigs altogether to play with tuning and eventually found a good one. I very quickly found a good setup for B rig and she was dam fast in B-rig conditions but I always suffered in the really light stuff. Surprising really as she was designed to do well in light wind. But really struggled to get her going in the light stuff. Eventually managed to get her going and did well here locally and went on to win the Paisley open last year against newer chined designed like the pikanto, MX14, MMX etc... But it was time to change and I got in touch with Frank Russell through my friend Brian from Northern Ireland who also sails a Frank Russell design the MX14. So one of our friend built one of Frank latest design the Goth XP in wood. From this year the Goth XP will be the boat I will campaign in IOM class. Now I also sail with Frank Russell sails Still learning to tune her as there is no tuning guide but with my first top rig, using what I learned from the V6 I managed to win the last race of the Ulster's championships in November up in Northern Ireland. It was in light wind so the boat performance is promising but it is still early days and I still to race her in more testing conditions. Today I finished her C rig with Frank Russell sails. they sure look good.

Monday I race against Britpop and V9 so we shall see.

Hi Claudio, Thank you - I wish I could take the credit for building this Frank Russell Design XP but it was a friend of mine Neill Suitor from Northern Ireland who built it for me. He a real magician with his hand when it comes to building. He's done his V8 in wood, my XP and one of our friend's V9 and now he's buidling an alternative from Brad's plans. I still want to get sail my first built boat but not there yet. Better at sailing than building... So far she's as competitive as any of the other fiberglass build boats like BP, v8 and v9 or cheinz... I am sure giving them boys a good run for their money.  

It remains a very nice construction, congratulations to Neill ClaudioD

Click the picture to get to the boat's page The IOM Class The International One Metre class was created by Jan Dejmo, with the support of Graham Bantock and the Permanent Committee of the ISAF-Radio Sailing Division, and adopted by ISAF-RSD in 1988. The intent was to pull together a variety of "One metre" class rules from different countries, and provide for a common, restricted, inexpensive international class of stable, easily-built designs. The result is the most popular RC racing yacht class in the world. The class has enjoyed such success because competitive IOMs can be built by an ordinary modeller at home, and due to the class restrictions competitive boats remain competitive for a number of years. IOM rules The performance of a RC yacht depends on hull lenght, beam, displacement, sail area, bulb draft, ballast ratio and rig plan. The only parameter than can be freely changed is the beam, all others are restricted by the IOM class rules. Therefore it is primarily differing beams and positions of maximum beam, which distinguish the different IOM designs. In addition to performance factors, the class rules explicitly restrict certain materials and construction methods in order to keep the class inexpensive and able to be built by an amateur builder. Radio control is restricted to two channels. Appendages and sails can be made of any material. A competitive boat can be built at home.

NSW Radio Yachting Association Inc

The New South Wales Radio Yachting Association Inc (NSWRYA) is the State Authority for Radio Yachting in NSW. The Association fosters competitive radio yachting at all levels.

Twenty four Clubs within NSW are affiliated with the NSWRYA. These Clubs sail an individual class or a mixture of classes determined by the wishes of the club's members.

The classes raced within NSW are the four International radio yacht classes; IOM, Marblehead, 10Rater and A Class the Nationally Recognised RC Laser, as well as the DF65, DF95, Soling One Meter and EC12.

Mini Review: Planet TS2+2 2.4GHz Stick Radio Combo, Used

Introduction

 I can't get on at all with steerwheel transmitters so I'm always going to be an advocate of old fashioned stick units - and usually I go for the cheaper, multi-channel 2.4Ghz flight setups, even though they do need internal fiddling and/or DIY shift gates.

One such radio set I was extremely impressed with was the Planet T5 TX / R6M RX combo. Sadly, it’s no longer available, but it had a high-quality feel considering its 50 GBP price point.

Released in November 2018 and still available at around 45 GBP, I bought a "used once" Planet TS2+2 transmitter & receiver combo on eBay for 25GBP (posted) back in November 2019.

There's not much to say here really, it arrived in a heavily brown-taped, 2nd hand box, and inside there was the transmitter and "Quick Start" guide, layered in amongst lots of large nodule bubble wrap. The receiver wasn't initially apparent, but was quickly found in the battery compartment, unrestrained*.

The TX was not in great cosmetic condition.* "Used Once" seems a real stretch, unless it was short for " used once then chucked in a box full of similar units & left to fret in the back of a damp van for long enough to collect some unpleasant looking dust and even more unpleasant sticky stuff ". Ahem.

A once-over with a baby wipe and a quick spray of Novus "Plastic Clean & Shine" soon had it looking like something I wasn't going to catch Tetanus off - but did nothing for the damage on the back.

The “correct” box you’ll get with a new combo is full colour printed with a white background, which is a change from moodily lit graphics on a black background of its predecessor. I’m not in the market for any more radio gear at the moment, and as such I’ve been unwilling to buy a new set just to find out how the TS2+2 is secured in the box. The T5 came in an effective and environmentally sound paper pulp clamshell, hopefully it’s something similar.

First impressions are that the ends of the gimbal sticks look and feel positively injurious. There seems to be a fashion for making the ends quite sharp on most stick transmitters that I've handled recently. Presumably, this is a "design feature" to stop your thumbs slipping off, but I find it uncomfortable & often file them back a little. Here though a new benchmark has been set, and I don’t mean that in a good way.

Let's start with the sticks. The left hand one only goes up and down, the right only left and right, just like a 2-channel set (rather than a 4/5/6 + channel TX). This is the reason it's called a "2+2" unit, the other two channel controls being of a more auxiliary nature.

Above the left stick is a small rotary knob, and above the right there's a long handled 3-position switch. On the face of it these extra controls are ideal for functions like lights and changing gear on a Tamiya 3-speed truck, but they're not perfect - lights would be better controlled with a simple on/off button, and I know from experience that small, metal handled switches can be a bit fragile in the field.

Trim buttons are adjacent to each stick, there appear to be 12 steps in each direction. Button presses (with the power on) are accompanied by a bleep that varies in pitch across the full range of steps (somewhat helpful) and volume (not very helpful, especially if you're in a noisy area, outdoors, or have any sort of hearing issue).

The same buttons can be used to reverse the servo direction - with the power off, hold the "Up" or "right" button as appropriate, turn the power on & wait for the green LED to come on.

The two points above are noteworthy - to do the same on the Flysky combos I've been buying recently requires connecting the TX to a PC.

The TS2+2 transmitter also features dual rate control on channels 1 & 2 (the sticks) - which is the ability to limit servo travel. Small switches next to the auxiliary controls turn the feature on or off, and the extent of servo travel can be adjusted through two small holes in the lower front panel.

This is a feature that can be nice to have under some circumstances, e.g. reducing steering servo throw if it goes further than it needs to & buzzes and strains at full lock, or limiting speed, but there are usually better/more reliable ways of doing this. I could live without it to be honest.

Other points of note are the folding antenna, a charging port on the side, a point to tie a lanyard (posh phrase for a bit of string ;) ) to, a "pair" button on the lower panel, and an on/off slider.

The rear panel is very plain, just having a slide out panel to access the battery compartment. There are 8 slots for AA batteries, but only the middle 4 have contacts.

Look & Feel

The bulk of the case is a black (or possibly very, very dark grey) plastic, with chrome-plated, non-ferrous metal on the small switches, and adjustable aluminium collars on the sticks. I've already mentioned the spiky ends (which can be filed down, or reversed), these are a little bit too long for my stubby digits at even their minimum length.

The decals are thin & don't seem to be adhering that well - certainly not a patch on the thin metal panels seen on much more expensive (or older) sets, or even the metalised foil decals seen on other modern units.

The transmitter feels fairly solid and of a good weight in the hand, but I can't help feeling it manages to look a bit bland _and_ toylike at the same time. To be honest, it’s not a patch on the previous T5 model.

The Receiver

To be honest as long as a receiver works correctly I don't really care about it, most of my builds now being of a size that placement is not a worry.

The "Proteus" 6-channel RX is positively tiny at 35mm long by 25mm wide by 13mm high (though more like 28mm high by the time you've plugged anything in) with a 132mm long wire antenna.

It features a bind button, LED indicator and 6 sets of 3 pins (signal innermost, earth/ground outermost). They are labelled "STR 1" and "THR 2", (steering and throttle) "CHN 3" & "CHN 4" (the auxiliary knob & long switch), "CHN 5" (which does nothing when paired with the TS2+2 TX), and "BATT 6".

In common with most (if not all) modern radio gear there's no battery eliminator circuitry (BEC) on the RX - the assumption being that you'll use an electronic speed control (ESC) with a friendly 4.8 or 6v output - and not full battery voltage (like the Tamiya TEU101BK).

There's been no attempt to make it the least bit water resistant, however the injection moulded case is going to be more robust than the folded plastic sleeve of the previous R6M unit.

Price vs The Competition

At 45 GBP new, the Planet TS2+2 combo is towards the upper end of the price range for out of the box ready, 2-channel, stick radio sets. For example, the Absima (formerly Ansmann) SRS2 2- channel set retails at around 35 GBP, and the C707131 Carson Reflex Pro 2 channel set also retailing at around 45 GBP. It doesn't fare so well again 2-channel steerwheel sets, with a wide range available under 30 GBP.

4, 5, and 6 channel stick sets are also available in the 25 to 35 GBP range.

However, the Planet combo scores in three key areas:

• - it doesn't require you to open the transmitter up to make the throttle stick work in the correct manner for RC cars (as the 4/5/6 channel sets do);
• - it has extra channels (compared to straight 2 channel sets);
• - steering is via stick (admittedly, this is purely personal preference).

Although it doesn't look or feel anywhere as near as nice the Planet T5 combo, the Planet TS2+2 combo is a good value and fiddle-free alternative to other 2.4ghz radio sets. The best thing about it is probably the fact that you can use the extra channels to control the gear shift on a Tamiya 3-speed truck, and basic light control straight out of the box (albeit in a slightly flawed way).

Like its predecessor, it doesn’t have any sort of model memory – but that’s not usually an option at this price point anyway.

The worst thing must be those medieval weapon inspired stick ends.

Overall, for the price, and considering the many plus points against just a few small negatives, 5 out of 6: recommended.

Who is alexander mashkevitch.

Mashkevich was born in Frunze, Kyrgyz SSR, Soviet Union, in 1954. His father Anton, a doctor born in Lithuania, and his mother, Rakhel Yoffe, a lawyer born in Vitebsk, were evacuated to Kyrgyzstan in 1941. His family background is Lithuanian Jewish.

He is a graduate of Kyrgyz State University where he studied philology. Mashkevich started out an academic career but became a businessman during perestroika. Mashkevich, Patokh Chodiev, and Alijan Ibragimov form “the Trio,” a group of Kazakh businessmen who became billionaires. The Trio gained control of the recently privatized chromium, alumina, and gas operations in Kazakhstan (some of the largest ones in the world).

Mashkevich is one of the owners of Alferon Management. Based in London, Alferon Management has acquired mining operations in different places: Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Kosovo, Russia, and other countries.

In 2010 he was on the Forbes list of billionaires at #287. In 2017, he was on the list at #1098, with a worth of $1.9 billions. Now his worth is 3 billion dollars.

Built in 2015, Lady Lara is designed for exquisite indoor/outdoor living and boasts voluminous interior and exterior spaces across several decks: ideal for bronzing, lounging or entertaining. The incredibly designed LADY LARA yacht features an interior style from Reymond Langton Design .

She has accommodations for 18 guests and 19 crew members on board. The VIP suites have fold-down balconies that add to the grandeur.

The onboard atmosphere is bright and inviting with subtle finishes. The entertainment areas are open to provide more sheltered and intimate formal spaces.

The yacht has an extensive health and beauty center with a spa and an expansive beach club.

The beach club creates the perfect area for guests to enjoy indoor/outdoor living. There is also a swimming platform where guests can leap into the water below.

She has an on-deck jacuzzi to soak up the bubbles and the views. The yacht also has an elevator for convenient access to her different decks and a comprehensive gym onboard. The tender garage is brimming with towable toys and tenders.

Reymond Langton Design also contributed to the exterior design of the LADY LARA yacht. She was built by Lürssen and delivered from their Rendsburg shipyard in 2015. The exterior has sweeping curves and elegant but masculine features.

LADY LARA was code-named project Orchid when she was launched from the Lürssen Shipyard in 2015 and later renamed. She has a full displacement hull which gives her exceptional speeds in the water.

She has a white aluminum superstructure and teak decks throughout. The exterior is accented by underwater lights, which illuminate her at the night.

The LADY LARA yacht is a 91m superyacht with a beam of 14.82m and a draft of 4m. The vessel reaches a maximum speed of 18 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots.

She is powered by 2 MTU engines and has a displacement of 2,945 gross tons.

She features an advanced stabilization system that provides guests with the best comfort levels on board by minimizing the rolling motion of the vessel. The $180 million yacht has a $14 – $15 million annual running cost.

She is an award-winning yacht that holds an award from the Asia Boating competition in 2016. LADY LARA has a Lloyd’s Register classification.

A $1.4 Million-Per-Week Yacht Charter Experience

Y.CO has just welcomed the 298-foot Lürssen Lady Lara to the charter fleet. The lowest weekly base rate is $1.4 million for bookings this winter in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

The yacht is also listed for sale—at more than $254 million—for the first time since the German shipyard delivered it in 2015. Y.CO’s Max Bulley and Gary Wright, along with Merle Wood of Merle Wood & Associates, represented the yacht at the recent Monaco Yacht Show.

“With Lürssen quality and stunning Reymond Langton design, Lady Lara is an exceptional yacht that was conceived with family living in mind,” Wright stated in a press release. “Her adaptable spaces, variety and flexibility, in addition to all the amazing features like the breathtaking spa area, the beach club and two pools, are ideal for multigenerational groups and put Lady Lara into a league of her own.”

Accommodations are for 12 guests in their choice of eight staterooms (for private use, the yacht is built to accommodate 16 guests). Six of the guest staterooms are on the main deck, with one on the lower deck. The master suite has its own private deck with an exterior terrace, outdoor hot tub, and indoor library. The aft-deck space in the owner’s area is called a “winter garden,” with sliding glass panels that can be closed to shelter diners from the elements.

There also are two cabins for owner’s staff or supernumeraries, in addition to the yacht’s quarters for 27 crew.

Onboard amenities include an aft-deck pool whose floor can be raised to create a dance floor. A sound system on this deck helps to create a discotheque-style environment for parties. There’s another pool up on the sundeck, this one with a swim-up bar.

On the bridge deck, guests have access to the spa, which includes a hammam, massage room, treatment room, beauty salon and gymnasium. Guests who prefer to get their exercise outdoors can do so from the beach club at water level, which has a steam room and a sauna along with a sunbathing area.

For rainy days and relaxing nights, the lower deck aboard Lady Lara includes a cinema. There’s also a touch-and-go helipad on board, if guests want to escape to a different spot up the coast.

How fast can Lady Lara cruise? According to Y.CO, the yacht has a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots, which is plenty fast for exploring the islands.

Rosatom Starts Production of Rare-Earth Magnets for Wind Power Generation

TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom has started gradual localization of rare-earth magnets manufacturing for wind power plants generators. The first sets of magnets have been manufactured and shipped to the customer.

In total, the contract between Elemash Magnit LLC (an enterprise of TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom in Elektrostal, Moscow region) and Red Wind B.V. (a joint venture of NovaWind JSC and the Dutch company Lagerwey) foresees manufacturing and supply over 200 sets of magnets. One set is designed to produce one power generator.

“The project includes gradual localization of magnets manufacturing in Russia, decreasing dependence on imports. We consider production of magnets as a promising sector for TVEL’s metallurgical business development. In this regard, our company does have the relevant research and technological expertise for creation of Russia’s first large-scale full cycle production of permanent rare-earth magnets,” commented Natalia Nikipelova, President of TVEL JSC.

“NovaWind, as the nuclear industry integrator for wind power projects, not only made-up an efficient supply chain, but also contributed to the development of inter-divisional cooperation and new expertise of Rosatom enterprises. TVEL has mastered a unique technology for the production of magnets for wind turbine generators. These technologies will be undoubtedly in demand in other areas as well,” noted Alexander Korchagin, Director General of NovaWind JSC.
