A predawn operation has rescued 77 migrants from a crippled yacht off Greece’s Aegean Sea islands

A group of 77 migrants were rescued off a crippled sailing yacht after a large overnight operation in the southern Aegean Sea, Greek authorities said Monday.

Nobody was reported missing or injured following the rescue between the islands of Amorgos and Astypalaia, Greece’s coast guard said.

Three coast guard vessels, four merchant ships in the area and two smaller private boats took part in the rescue after passengers on the yacht phoned emergency services for assistance.

The nationalities of the migrants were not immediately known. All were taken to Naxos in the Cyclades island group, where they were given temporary shelter.

It was unclear where the migrants had departed from. They were rescued on a route typically used by smuggling gangs to ferry migrants from Turkey to Italy, avoiding tightly patrolled waters around Greece’s eastern Aegean islands.

Such trips are more common in the summer when the weather is milder and when the smugglers’ yachts are likelier to pass by undetected amid the large numbers of yachts chartered by tourists visiting popular Greek islands.

Greece is a key entry point for thousands of people from the Middle East, Africa and Asia seeking a better life in the affluent European Union.

Heat wave sizzles parts of the country as floods and severe weather force people from their homes

Updated on: June 23, 2024 / 7:42 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Little relief appears on the forecast for millions across the United States enduring record-setting heat or widespread flooding this weekend.

The National Weather Service said Sunday that the heat wave will shift from the mid-Atlantic to portions of the southeast and southern Plains by Monday. Meanwhile, widespread storms will bring the threat of flash flooding, damaging winds and tornadoes for a second day in New England.

Elsewhere, severe storms and rainfall are on the forecast. Here is what we know:

Heatwave shifts its focus

The record-setting heat wave that has kept roughly 15 million people under a heat warning – the highest level of alert by the National Weather Service – will shift from the mid-Atlantic to portions of the southeast and Lower Mississippi Valley on Sunday. Temperatures are expected to remain in the upper 90s with stifling humidity helping to push the heat index into the low 100s. There will be little relief overnight as low temperatures will remain in the mid-70s.

"Numerous record-tying/breaking highs are possible," the National Weather Service said Sunday.

APTOPIX Severe Weather New York

"It's more important for people who are going to be outside to stay hydrated, because heat, humidity and low winds, even if you're in good shape and not really acclimated to it, it could be a danger, " said Bruce Thoren, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Oklahoma. "It happens quickly."

The cities of Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia all saw record heat on Saturday, with more high temperatures expected Sunday.

In the west, temperatures will push past 100 over northern Utah and parts of central and southern California.

"We still have this prolonged heat wave across portions of the Ohio Valley and into the Northeast," weather service meteorologist Marc Chenard said. "We get a little bit of relief by early in the week, at least in the eastern U.S., the Northeast, but in general above-normal temperatures are going to cover a large portion of the country even into next week."

Last year the U.S. experienced the most heat waves since 1936, experts said. An  AP analysis  of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that excessive heat contributed to more than 2,300 deaths, the highest in 45 years of records.

Chance for heavy rain continues

A system pushing eastward will bring possible heavy rainfall from New England southeastward through the mid-Atlantic into the Upper Ohio and Tennessee Valleys on Sunday. The National Weather Service said the storms could lead to downpours upwards of 2 inches of rain per hour and a threat of flash flooding in some areas.

Forecasters said the conditions over New England are "favorable for the threat of damaging winds and a few tornados."

Marvin Boyd, meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Burlington, Vermont, said a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for parts of northern New York as a storm with wind gusts exceeding 60 mph (95 kph) and the threat of tornadoes heads toward Vermont near Lake Champlain. It is one of several expected to pass through the region on Sunday afternoon.

"It's an unusual alignment of ingredients for Vermont and northern New York to produce a threat of tornadoes," Boyd said.

Meanwhile, in the Upper Midwest, the National Weather Service predicted there is a chance for severe storms with damaging winds and large hail on Monday.

The region is still reeling from severe storms and flooding that forced the evacuation of thousands of people in Iowa and South Dakota.

Flooding in Rock Valley, Iowa

Rock Valley, Iowa, Mayor Kevin Van Otterloo said Saturday that a state helicopter was dispatched to help residents who were stranded but was called off after boats were able to reach them.

"We've had so much rain here," he said. "We had 4 inches last night in an hour and a half time. Our ground just cannot take anymore."

Gov. Kim Reynolds declared a disaster for 21 counties in northern Iowa, including Sioux County, which includes Rock Valley. In  drone video  posted by the local sheriff, no streets were visible, just roofs and treetops poking above the water.

Severe Weather Iowa

In South Dakota, Gov. Kristi Noem declared an emergency after the southeastern part of the state received heavy rainfall. The town of Canton, 30 miles southeast of Sioux Falls, has received 18 inches of rain.

During a news conference on Sunday, Noem confirmed that at least one person had died in the flooding. She did not give out any information about the victim.

"I want to remind everybody to remember the power of water and the flow of water and to stay away from flooded areas," she said. "We've got a few days in front of us here that'll be a little rough," she added, "but we'll get through it together and do the very best to protect infrastructure, homes and families as we possibly can."

Flooding also closed state highways and county roads in southern Minnesota. Windom, a town of about 4,800 people, received 1.25 inches of rain on top of earlier heavy downpours, and the Des Moines River there had a record crest.

Moisture remains in the Southwest

Meanwhile, monsoon-like conditions will persist through at least Monday with daily shower and thunderstorm chances in the Four Corners region.

In New Mexico, heavy rain and flash flood warnings prompted officials to order some evacuations, with shelters set up for displaced residents.

In Ruidoso, a mountain village in New Mexico, full-time residents will be allowed to return Monday after they were forced out by wildfires, though everyday life won't return to normal.

"You're going to need to bring a week's worth of food, you're going to need to bring drinking water," Mayor Lynn Crawford said on Facebook.

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham told "Face the Nation" host Margaret Brennan on Sunday that it has been "a hell of a week" in her home state.

"Between dust, heat, flooding, these are not the only evacuations," he said. "We've got flooding evacuations in the north, where the largest wildfire in the history of the United States, one of the largest wildfires in the history of the U.S., it's been really tough on New Mexicans. And I'm grateful to every first responder who puts them first and stands up to make sure they're as safe as we can make them."

Sweltering heat wave puts 44 million under warnings as the Midwest reels from floods

More than 44 million people across the United States were under some form of heat warning or advisory Monday, with daily temperature records set to be smashed while the Midwest reels from dangerous storms and flash flooding , with more rain to come.

The number of those affected has reduced since the weekend but this prolonged and intense blast of heat , which has come earlier than usual in the season, still poses a real health risk to those who spend prolonged periods outdoors or who have no access to cool spaces, authorities warned.

The National Weather Service issued heat warnings for the Southeast, the mid-South, and central/southern Plains, from South Dakota down to Texas, as well as the South and parts of Southern California.

Temperatures could reach well into the upper-90s in these areas, the weather service said, while cities including Wichita, Kansas, Little Rock, Arkansas, and Dallas should all see temperatures at or above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

In New Orleans, it could feel as hot as 110 when humidity is taken into account. Overnight temperatures will drop to the mid- to lower-70s, making sleep uncomfortable for some.

Excessive heat is expected to linger in the South through Friday, NBC News meteorologist Michelle Grossman said Monday morning.

Most of the United States will experience hotter than normal weather throughout the summer, from July to September, a US government agency predicted June 20, as a large part of the country sizzled in the first heat wave of the year.

"The arrival of this more intense heat early in the Summer season leads to a higher level of heat-related stress, especially for those outdoors and without reliable air conditioning available," the weather service said.

The Associated Press calculated that the U.S. experienced more heat waves in 2023 than in any year since 1936. Excessive heat contributed to more than 2,300 deaths, the highest in 45 years, its study found.

“It’s more important for people who are going to be outside to stay hydrated, because heat, humidity and low winds, even if you’re in good shape and not really acclimated to it, it could be a danger,” said Bruce Thoren, a weather service meteorologist in Oklahoma. “It happens quickly.”

Midwest floods

The heat wave comes after rising floodwaters in the Midwest caused chaos, killing at least one person in South Dakota, amid forced evacuations and rescues. A state of disaster was declared in 21 counties across Iowa, and entire towns and cities were cut off from surrounding areas.

Some 15 inches of rain caused at least 13 rivers to flood the area around the borders of Iowa, South Dakota and Minnesota, Eric Tigges of Clay County Emergency Management said. Some areas received eight times their normal daily rainfall.

Flooding in Iowa

"When the flood gauge is underwater, it’s really high," Tigges said at a news conference.

And there is more rain to come: the weather service forecast that a new weather front will move northward to the upper Midwest on Monday, bringing "plentiful moisture" and a slight risk of storms, which could bring very large hail and tornadoes.

This weather system will then move east Tuesday toward the Midwest and the Great Lakes regions, with storms and a chance of flash flooding.

Four Seasons 1, the all suite yacht due to launch in 2026.

Travelers accustomed to Four Seasons style in design and service will have a chance to experience both at sea when Four Seasons Yachts sets sail in 2026. Earlier this year, the company announced its first 10 itineraries; earlier this week, it announced 13 more. All offer the land option of pre or post trips at the company’s resorts.

As Timothy Littley, VP of Itinerary and Planning at Marc-Henry Cruise Holdings LTD and co-owner/operator of Four Seasons Yachts explains, his intention was to design experiences that resonate deeply and truly express the spirit of adventure and discovery. "In our debut year, we're set to explore over 130 distinct destinations across more than 33 countries and territories,” he says. “My professional journey, alongside years of personal exploration, has been dedicated to understanding the nuances of these locales—their culture, their people, and the unique experiences they offer—to ensure we curate something truly extraordinary for our guests.”

The first sailings are set for January,2026 heading to Croatia, Gibraltar, Montenegro, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Türkiye. The Mediterranean itinerary will also highlight Greek islands with stops in Athens, Ios, Santorini and Milos but not always in the usual way: arriving in the tourist favorite island of Santorini, for example, at 5 PM when the other cruise ships are leaving, allowing passengers to enjoy a less crowded island in the evening. Under the radar but islands also worth visiting such as Hydra and Naxos are also included. Caribbean sailings are also among the first itineraries traveling to Saint Barthélemy (St Barths), Nevis, the Grenadines, St Lucia, Barbados, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Curaçao and Aruba. While there, passengers disembark to experience the nightlife of St Barths, Martinique’s volcanic coral reefs and lush rainforest landscapes and a sail in St Lucia’s Tobago Cays among other experiences.

Among the itineraries announced this week are five-, seven- and nine-night voyages that include legendary ports of call such as Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Monte Carlo, Capri, Positano, Taormina, Palma de Mallorca and Valencia plus lesser-known gems including Italy’s Portovenere, France’s Fréjus and Mandelieu-la-Napoule, Spain’s Ciutadella de Menorca and Malta’s Gozo. Offshore activities to truly experience the destination are being selected ranging from exploring the esteemed rosé vineyards in Bandol, France to truffle hunting in Viareggio, Italy.

The four level Funnel Suite.

The yacht, Four Seasons 1, is being constructed by renowned Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri in Ancona, Italy and will contain 95 suites with modular walls that will allow 100 different connection options including reserving one side of a deck for a large family or group of friends traveling together. The largest accommodations are seven signature suites ranging from 2,981 to 9,975 square feet of indoor and outdoor living space offering two to three bedrooms, separate living rooms, indoor and outdoor dining space, splash pools, outdoor showers, and the option to connect to additional suites. The largest, the 9,975 square foot Funnel Suite, includes four levels of living space and floor to ceiling wraparound windows. All feature a design described by Fredrik Johannson, partner and executive director of Tillberg Design of Sweden as welcoming in the same way that the group’s resorts are but unique to the yacht. “It had to have this incredibly elegant aura to it without being over-the-top opulent,” he says. “To this end, we strove for a beautiful simplicity with the interiors.”

Elsewhere on the yacht are 11 dining options, spa and wellness offerings and a 65 foot long stern pool. Taking care of all are staff members on a 1:1 guest to staff ratio, along the lines of what Four Seasons regulars experience on land. And there will be at least 41 opportunities to experience it; that number of sailings at this point is planned for the first year; more may be added.

Wave of Ukrainian Drone Attacks on Russia Kills 1

wave yacht service

Updated with Ukrainian army statement.

Russia's Defense Ministery said Friday that its air defense forces downed 114 drones launched overnight by Ukraine, with at least one person killed in the mass wave of attacks.

"Russian anti-aerial defense systems intercepted and destroyed 70 drones over Crimea and the Black Sea, 43 drones over the Krasnodar region and one drone over Volgograd," the defense ministry said in a statement.

In the southern Krasnodar region, a worker at a heating station was killed when a drone struck the facility near the Yuzhny train station , Governor Venyamin Kondratyev said on Telegram.

Several administrative buildings at an oil refinery were also damaged in the Severski district, he said.

Ukraine's armed forces later claimed responsibility for the strikes on Friday, saying it launched drones against "the Afipskiy, Ilskiy, Krasnodar and Astrakhan oil refineries," as well as a radio and intelligence center in southern Russia.

The Ukrainian military added that one of its drones targeted a "preparation and storage area" in the Krasnodar region, resulting in a "series of explosions and a fire with subsequent detonation."

Since the beginning of the year, Ukraine has ramped up its attacks on Russia's energy infrastructure, including strikes on oil depots and refineries, as it tries to hit the Kremlin's wallet and reduce the availability of fuel for Moscow's war machine.

Meanwhile, Russian missile and drone strikes aimed at Ukraine's energy infrastructure have crippled the country's electricity generation capacity and have forced Kyiv to impose rolling blackouts and import electricity from the EU.
