How to Become a Yacht Captain - Certifications & Experience

Just like any other highly paid and highly specialized position, becoming a yacht captain is a long grind. Nothing is given to you. You have to start from the bottom and work your way up. It is a process that takes many years of sea time, education, and experience.

Assuming that you are relatively new to the industry, it’s best to start from the very beginning. In the following chapters we will go through a detailed breakdown of the certifications and qualifications you need, and show you how to become a yacht captain.

how to become a yacht captain

Before you get your first job onboard of any yacht, there are a few courses you need to take. These are mandatory for everyone who wishes to work onboard, and are commonly known as basic training for seaman:

  • STCW 2010 Basic Safety Training (BST) - This training consists of first-aid practices, response to emergencies, personal safety, social responsibility, and best practices for sea survival. The duration of this course is 5 days and pricing starts at $1012.
  • Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) course) - This course teaches basic seamanship, rope and wirework, painting and maintenance routines, as well as other safe working practices aboard. Much like the BST, this course is 5 days long and pricing starts at $964).

At this point, what you want to do is get your Royal Yachting Association (RYA) certificate. The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is a recognized organization that issues your Powerboat Handling Level 2 (basic course),  Yachtmaster™ Offshore , and Yachtmaster™ Ocean .

Note that the costs associated with the RYA certificate can vary, as you need to find an associated training center, purchase all the necessary materials, and abide by all the entry requirements. So you might need to do some research at this point.

Once you successfully complete the courses mentioned above, you will need to put your CV together. There are many templates you can use for this purpose. You can start by using this one .

Once your CV is created, you will need to seek out the best yacht crew agencies and start applying to all of them. This page gives a good overview of the most popular options.

Keep in mind that there are many options when it comes to resume templates and yacht crew agencies. It might be a good idea to use Google to find more options.

how to become a yacht captain

To increase your odds of getting a job onboard, you will now need to get to one of the yachting capitals. This is, by far, one of the best tips for ambitious young sailors that want to know how to become a yacht captain.

Don’t get fooled by those who tell you of their single best yachting capital of the world. Depending on your current location and budget, you will have several options. Check this article to start your research.

“Earning” your first job

As soon as you arrive at your yachting capital of preference, you will need to get a job. Similar to any other industry, this usually happens by actively seeking out open positions. For yachting work, this is done through “dock walking”, a term that refers to the process of going from boat to boat, searching for opportunities.

What you want to do here is be pleasant, hand out your CV, grow your network, and offering any kind of service. There might be owners that need help with buffing, sanding, polishing, scrubbing decks… you name it! Take any job that you can because each hour you spend onboard improves your resume.

After a while, you will hopefully manage to get a job aboard a (super)yacht. This is where you want to be. It is important to manage your expectations and prepare to work very hard. Your first job will not be glamorous and it will certainly not be a “working holiday”. You will be living in a cramped scape, away from home, doing chores most hours of the day.

Don’t let the day-to-day tasks discourage you. Everything you do at this point helps you build character and shows that your position is “earned”. You will have many opportunities to gain experience, overdeliver, and start climbing the ladder.

Gain experience & continue your education

As you become more experienced and collect enough hours onboard, you will qualify for a few more courses, which are issued by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

  • Officer Of the Watch (OOW) - This course allows you to become an officer on board a vessel up to 3000gt. In order to apply for this course, you will need to meet several requirements, including >250 days onboard, holding an RYA certificate for at least 36 months, and having completed an MCA training record book . The latest is a list of tasks that you need to complete while serving onboard a vessel that exceeds 15 meters in length. Anything smaller is not qualified as valid experience according to the MCA. The modules of OOW include:
  • General Ship Knowledge (GSK) - Price between $1000 - $1100
  • Navigation & Radar (ARPA operation) - Price upon request
  • Global communications training (GMDSS GOC) - Price starting at $1625
  • HELM Training Operational Level - Price upon request
  • Proficiency in survival cross & rescue boats - Price between $860 - $900
  • Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS) Training - Price between $1300 - $1800

Each of the modules, once completed, requires a written exam. This means that you need to find a partner organization where you can go and write the exam. If you pass, the certificate will be sent to your location (including a digital copy that you can add to your resume).

You need to pass all of the modules in order for the MCA to issue your certificate of competence (COC). And as soon as all that is done, you are officially qualified to perform your oral exam for the OOW. Here is a video that shows you the steps you need to follow:

The exam itself consists of a discussion with a qualified instructor, where you go through all the modules through a series of questions. Upon passing the exam, and given that you hold all the aforementioned certificates, you will receive the MCA Yachts OOW certificate and are officially qualified to be a deck officer.

Keep in mind that the certificate itself doesn’t automatically guarantee you a promotion. You might move slightly up the ranks (lead deckhand) but you will still need to gain more experience in the form of additional sea time.

More specifically, you can continue with higher-level education once you gain even more experience on board.

The course you want to do is known as MCA Master 500 yachts . You can do this once your certificate of competence has been issued for OOW and 12 months have passed. You will also need to have an additional 120 days of verified sea service.

The course consists of several master modules, which include:

  • Ship Stability - Price: $1500
  • Business and Law - Price: $1500
  • Navigation, ARPA, and radar simulator - Price: $3350
  • Seamanship & Meteorology - Price: $1500

The course also includes some ancillary course modules, as well as the requirements you need to abide by in further detail. Similar to the OOW, you will need to pass a written certificate for each of the modules, in order to proceed to an oral exam to receive your Master 500 certificate of competence (COC).

You now have all the necessary qualifications - there are no more modules. However, you still need to perform an additional 12 months of sea time, and 120 days of sea service.

The final step is getting your MCA Master 3000 certification, a process that consists of an oral exam only. You can find more information about the requirements and components here . The oral prep course for this exam is highly recommended, takes 5 days, and costs between $890 and $1160, depending on the number of students that choose to participate.

Those who have little to no experience tend to think that a captain’s only responsibility is to command the ship. The truth is much “broader”. A yacht captain’s responsibilities are divided into three areas:

  • To ensure the safety of life of everyone onboard
  • To ensure the safety of the vessel (paperwork, unforeseen circumstances, etc.)
  • To ensure the safety of the marine environment

This may sound rather simple, but remember that there are many subcategories that fall under these responsibilities:

  • Ensuring the crew is well-trained, rested, and qualified to do their job, all while remaining safe. This requires strong (cross-cultural) people skills and is probably the hardest part of the job.
  • Make sure that all your personal certificates, as well as the vessel documentation, is in order.
  • Staying up to date with yacht inspection, maintenance, and logging all the necessary information. You can completely automate this responsibility by using our software, PlanM8 .
  • Make sure that the vessel is compliant with the International Safety Management code
  • Navigation of the vessel
  • Make sure the yacht owner (or guests) are satisfied.

The salary of a yacht captain depends on several factors, including the years of experience, the size of the vessel, and the duration of the contract. Generally speaking, the low end of the salary is approximately $5000 per month and the high end exceeds $18.000 per month. For more information, check this resource .

After reading all of the above you should have a better idea of how to become a yacht captain. There are many courses you need to complete and lots of personal sacrifice in the form of sea time. This is why only the most passionate ones - those willing to go the extra mile - will manage to get a hold of the helm.

Remember that in between each of your certifications it is important to get as much sea time as possible, doing everything in your power to learn from the master on board. Much like any traineeship, your primary concern should involve gaining lots of experience.

The discipline and character you build along your former years will help you understand the importance of continuous education. You will naturally want to familiarize yourself with the latest industry practices and improving your abilities.

Understand the Role of a Yacht Captain:

How to Become a Yacht Captain

What are the primary responsibilities of a yacht captain?

The primary responsibilities of a yacht captain involve the overall operation and management of a yacht. Here are some key areas of responsibility:

  • Vessel Navigation: The captain is responsible for safely navigating the yacht, ensuring it follows maritime regulations and adheres to navigation rules. This includes charting courses, monitoring weather conditions, and operating navigation equipment.
  • Crew Management: The captain oversees the crew and is responsible for their training, supervision, and performance. They assign duties and delegate responsibilities to ensure smooth operations on board. Effective crew management involves fostering teamwork, promoting a positive work environment, and addressing any issues that may arise.
  • Guest Safety: The safety of passengers and guests is a top priority for a yacht captain. They ensure that all safety protocols and procedures are in place and followed diligently. This includes conducting safety briefings, maintaining emergency equipment, and implementing appropriate security measures.
  • Maintenance Oversight: The captain is responsible for the overall maintenance and upkeep of the yacht. They oversee routine maintenance tasks, coordinate repairs and inspections, and ensure that the vessel meets all safety and regulatory requirements. This includes managing budgets, inventory, and working closely with engineers and technical staff.

Effective Communication, Leadership, and Problem-Solving Skills:

Being a yacht captain requires strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills due to the nature of the role:

  • Communication: The captain must effectively communicate with the crew, guests, and other stakeholders. Clear communication ensures smooth operations, fosters teamwork, and promotes safety on board.
  • Leadership: A captain is expected to lead by example, inspire the crew, and make informed decisions in high-pressure situations. They must possess strong leadership skills to guide the team and manage various challenges that may arise.
  • Problem-Solving: Yacht captains often face unexpected situations or emergencies. They need to think critically, make quick decisions, and find solutions to ensure the safety of everyone on board. Problem-solving skills are crucial for handling unforeseen circumstances effectively.

Necessary licenses and certifications required to become a yacht captain

To become a yacht captain, individuals must acquire the necessary licenses and certifications. The specific requirements may vary depending on the country and the type of vessel. Here is a general overview:

  • OUPV (Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels) License: This license, also known as a six-pack license, is required for operating uninspected vessels carrying up to six paying passengers. It allows captains to operate charter boats, fishing boats, and small passenger vessels.
  • Master License: The Master License allows captains to operate larger vessels that carry more passengers. There are different levels of Master licenses, such as Master 25, 50, 100, 200, and 500. The number denotes the maximum gross tonnage of the vessel.

Eligibility criteria for these licenses typically include:

Meeting the minimum age requirement (usually 18 years or older).

  • Accumulating a specific number of sea service days, which may vary based on the license level.
  • Passing a written examination that tests knowledge of navigation, safety, and other relevant topics.
  • Meeting medical fitness requirements.
  • Providing character references and completing an application process.

It’s important to note that these requirements can vary between countries and regions. It’s recommended to consult the maritime authority or governing body in the relevant jurisdiction to get accurate and up-to-date information on licensing and certification requirements for yacht captains.

Gain Experience and Build a Skill Set:

How to Become a Yacht Captain

  • Understanding Navigation Rules: Familiarize yourself with the rules of navigation, including buoyage systems, right of way, and international maritime regulations. This knowledge ensures safe navigation and promotes responsible boating practices.
  • Weather Patterns and Conditions: Learn about weather patterns, tides, and their impact on boating. Understanding weather forecasts and how to interpret them is crucial for planning safe voyages and avoiding hazardous conditions.
  • Basic Boat Handling: Acquire basic boat handling skills, including steering, docking, and maneuvering in different environments. This knowledge forms the foundation for operating and controlling a vessel effectively.

There are various resources and courses available to help gain this knowledge. Consider taking boating safety courses offered by organizations such as the United States Power Squadrons (USPS), the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, or local boating associations. Additionally, introductory sailing lessons or basic boating courses can provide valuable insights into navigation and boat handling.

Value of gaining hands-on experience by working as a deckhand or crew member on a yacht

Gaining hands-on experience by working as a deckhand or crew member on a yacht is invaluable for aspiring yacht captains. This experience provides insights into yacht operations, teamwork, and the daily responsibilities involved. Here are a few benefits:

  • Exposure to Yacht Operations: Working on a yacht allows you to observe and participate in various tasks related to vessel maintenance, navigation, safety protocols, and guest services. You’ll gain practical knowledge and understand the dynamics of running a yacht.

  • Preparatory Courses and Study Materials: Consider enrolling in preparatory courses offered by recognized training centers or maritime academies. These courses are designed to help you prepare for the licensing examinations and cover the necessary topics in depth. Additionally, study materials such as textbooks, online resources, and practice exams can aid your preparation.

Practice solving sample questions and scenarios to familiarize yourself with the format and structure of the licensing examinations.

Becoming a boat captain can be a time-consuming but rewarding process. A captain’s license isn’t necessary if you just want to take your own boat out for pleasure cruises, but it is required if you receive any compensation for your boat services. With the right education, experience, and test scores, you will be on your way to becoming a licensed boat captain.

Step 1 Earn your high school diploma or GED.

  • Learn communication skills through English classes and other language classes.
  • Also consider taking computer classes and mechanical drawing classes.

Step 2 Get a bachelor's degree.

  • Get a degree in the field of marine transportation, marine engineering, maritime operations and technology, or shipyard management.

Step 3 Study relevant topics.

  • Even if you can’t afford a full 4-year education, try to audit some maritime-related classes at your local university or community college.
  • Look for classes offered by local organizations like the yacht club or sailing club.

Step 4 Enroll in a captain’s license class.

  • If you live near a coast, look for local businesses that specialize in these classes. If there's nothing near where you live, you can take an online course.
  • These courses end in a written exam that can often stand in for the official exam. Check the Coast Guard website to find approved courses. [4] X Research source

Step 1 Log at least 360 days of sea-time.

  • If this sea-time is spent under another captain's command, you will need to have this captain sign your license application when the time comes.
  • Any time spent on a boat counts. So include hours working in positions such as a maid or deckhand on a cruise ship.

Step 2 Spend additional time training on a boat.

  • Some positions to aim for are deckhand, third mate, second mate, chief mate, or engineer.

Nitzan Levy

  • Look for positions like tour guide, dockhand, sanitation officer, or boat mechanic.

Step 4 Work as a deck officer.

  • If it's not necessary, simply provide a statement with your application that says you don't need it.
  • If a TWIC card is necessary for you, you can apply for it through the TSA.

Step 2 Choose between the “Six-Pack” or the Master license.

  • The Master license involves far more sea-time hours, but there’s no need to get the six-pack license first. Jump right to the Master if that’s the one you want.

Step 3 Satisfy all of the physical and legal fine print.

  • Additional identification will be required, such as a social security card or an I-551 alien registration card.

Step 4 Submit an application.

  • You can submit your application and any supporting documents in person at a local Regional Exam Center (REC) or send it to the REC through the mail.
  • If you're outside the U.S., you'll need to apply for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) through the Royal Yacht Academy.

Step 5 Present three character references.

  • References from licensed captains, commercial fishermen, or others who own and operate their own boats are generally best.
  • These character reference letters should also be notarized.

Step 6 Pay the fees.

  • This exam will usually consist of multiple choice questions about deck and safety procedures, general navigation, and rules associated with operating a boat in shared waters. [17] X Research source

Step 8 Receive your credentials.

  • If your application is approved, your license and credentials will be printed and mailed to you.

Step 1 Network through your professional contacts.

  • Join your local yacht club or sailing club to make more contacts there.
  • Go mingle with other captains at local docks and start up conversations with them. They may know of more job openings.

Step 2 Look for online job ads.

9 Steps to Help You Become a Yacht Captain Today

9 Steps to Help You Become a Yacht Captain Today

If you’ve always had a super and related to the sea, then getting behind the helm of a yacht might be a dream come true. But how do you go from reading about yachting to actually becoming a yacht captain? It’s not as daunting as it sounds! With a few years of experience, the right qualifications, and the drive to improve yourself, you can find yourself climbing the ranks and acquiring the necessary skills to become a qualified and experienced yacht captain.

First things first, you need to understand what qualifications are required to become a yacht captain. Typically, you will need to complete a series of training modules and acquire a nautical license. Having a Mate and Yachtmaster certification from the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is a vital step in the process. These certifications ensure that you have the necessary navigational and leadership skills to be responsible for the safety of everyone on board.

Once you have the right qualifications, it’s time to get some hands-on experience. Many yacht captains have spent years working their way up through the ranks, starting out as deckhands or skippers. This not only gives you the necessary knowledge and expertise, but it also shows potential employers that you are committed to a career in the maritime world.

When it comes to acquiring experience, there are a few routes you can take. One option is to join a yacht crew and work your way up from a deckhand to a mate and eventually a captain. Another option is to go through a formal training program where you can gain experience and complete the required courses at the same time.

If you’ve got the drive and determination, becoming a yacht captain can be a rewarding career choice. Just remember to start small, stay focused, and never stop learning. So, what’s stopping you? Get out there and set sail on your journey to becoming a yacht captain!

Choose the Right Training Program

When it comes to becoming a yacht captain, choosing the right training program is crucial. There are many courses available, but not all of them will qualify you for the positions you are looking to climb up to. It is important to care and take the time to research the different training programs to ensure that you are enrolling in the most suitable one for your career goals.

One organization that is well-known in the yachting industry is the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). They offer a wide range of certifications and training courses that cover various subjects related to yacht navigation and safety. The RYA courses are internationally recognized, ensuring that you gain the competence and skills needed to qualify for higher positions.

In addition to the RYA courses, there are also other training programs available that focus on specific areas such as leadership, medical care, and radar operation. Being well-rounded and having a diverse skillset will give you an edge in the competitive yachting industry.

Remember that training doesn’t stop once you have completed the necessary courses. Yachting is an ever-changing industry, and it is important to stay up to date with the latest changes and improvements. Continuing to improve your skills and knowledge will not only make you a better captain but also open doors to further career opportunities.

Networking and building contacts within the yachting industry is also crucial. Dockwalking, which involves personally visiting yachts and handing out your CV, is a common practice to get yourself noticed and gain entry-level positions. It’s a hands-on approach that can demonstrate your commitment and perseverance to potential employers.

Your training should also include gaining experience on board. Spending time as a deckhand and working your way up the ranks will give you valuable firsthand experience and help you understand the dynamics of being part of a yacht’s crew. The more miles you have under your belt, the more it will count towards earning your captain’s license.

When researching training programs, consider the pricing, the organization offering the courses, and the modules or chapters covered in the program. Look for courses that offer practical hands-on experience and interactive learning. Having experienced instructors can also make a significant difference in your training. They can provide valuable insights and guidance based on their years of experience in the industry.

Getting the right training and certifications is just the beginning. As a yacht captain, you are responsible for the safety and well-being of everyone on board. You must be prepared to handle any eventuality. Remember to complete any necessary medical and first aid training. On top of that, leadership skills are essential for managing a crew and ensuring smooth operations on board.

So, if you are looking to become a yacht captain, start by choosing the right training program that aligns with your career goals. Take the time to research different programs, gain practical experience, and continue to improve yourself both on and off the deck. With perseverance, hard work, and the right training, you can make your way up the ranks and be ready to take on the challenges of being a yacht captain.

Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Certification

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is a renowned organization that offers a comprehensive certification program for aspiring yacht captains. Acquiring RYA certification is a crucial step in your journey towards becoming a qualified and competent yacht captain.

Why RYA Certification?

Earning RYA certification shows your dedication and commitment to the maritime industry. It demonstrates that you have the necessary skills, knowledge, and competence to handle the responsibilities of a yacht captain. RYA certification is recognized worldwide and opens up opportunities for better job prospects and higher salary.

RYA certification is typically divided into different levels, allowing you to progress from basic skills to advanced navigational techniques. The organization offers a wide range of courses and subjects that cover every aspect of yacht captaincy, ensuring you gain a well-rounded knowledge and understanding of the role.

What Does RYA Certification Involve?

RYA certification is a structured program that covers various subjects such as navigation, boat handling, safety, and leadership. The courses are designed to improve your skills and knowledge in these areas, making you a more efficient and competent multitasker. You’ll also learn how to ensure the well-being and safety of the crew and passengers aboard the vessel.

One of the key certifications offered by the RYA is the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore certification. This certification is highly regarded and validates your skills and competence as a yacht captain. To earn this certification, you’ll need to have at least 2,500 nautical miles, including a minimum of 1,250 nautical miles as a skipper. You’ll also need to pass a practical examination that tests your navigational and boat handling abilities.

RYA certification also includes additional courses such as radar training, which can further enhance your skills and make you a more well-rounded captain. These courses cover topics such as radar theory, radar plotting, and the effective use of radar for navigation and collision avoidance.

How to Obtain RYA Certification

To obtain RYA certification, you’ll need to follow a series of steps:

  • Begin by deciding the level of certification you want to achieve. This will depend on your experience and career goals.
  • Find an RYA training center in your location that offers the desired certification courses.
  • Take the necessary courses and gain practical experience on the water.
  • Once you meet the required criteria, you can apply for the RYA certification.
  • Prepare for and successfully pass any practical examinations that are part of the certification process.
  • Network with professionals in the industry to gain valuable contacts and opportunities.
  • Continue improving your skills and knowledge through further training and experience.
  • Build a strong resume showcasing your RYA certification and practical experience.
  • Apply for yacht captain jobs, showcasing your RYA certification and demonstrating your competence and leadership abilities.

Obtaining RYA certification is a significant milestone in your journey towards becoming a yacht captain. It shows your dedication, competence, and willingness to go above and beyond the basic requirements. Whether you’re just beginning your career or have already been working in the marine industry for years, RYA certification can help you take your skills and career to the next level.

Gain Sailing Experience

Gaining sailing experience is an essential step towards becoming a yacht captain. This hands-on experience will not only give you valuable skills but also help you assess whether a career as a yacht captain is right for you.

There are several ways to gain sailing experience:

  • Start by reading books or taking online courses on sailing to get a basic understanding of the principles and techniques involved.
  • Take part in sailing trips or join sailing clubs to get practical experience on different types of boats and in various weather conditions.
  • Consider becoming a crew member on a yacht or working as a deckhand. This will allow you to learn from experienced captains and gain hands-on experience in yacht operations.
  • Obtain relevant certifications, such as the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) qualifications. These certifications are recognized worldwide and will demonstrate your competency and commitment to the field.

Remember that gaining sailing experience is not just about accumulating miles on the water. It’s also about learning how to navigate, make decisions, and be a leader. Yacht captains are responsible for the safety of their crew and passengers, ensuring that the yacht is properly maintained, and managing the overall operation of the vessel.

If you’re willing to persevere and put in the effort, gaining sailing experience will be worth it. It will not only qualify you for higher-ranking positions within the marine industry but also increase your chances of becoming a yacht captain.

Keep in mind that gaining sailing experience is typically a step-by-step process. Besides gaining sailing experience, you may also need to take additional courses or training to meet the requirements for officer positions within the industry.

One such course is the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) course. This course covers modules on basic safety, firefighting, first aid, and more. It is an internationally recognized certification that is required for many positions within the maritime industry.

Lastly, dockwalking can also be a valuable way to gain sailing experience. Dockwalking involves visiting marinas and talking to yacht crews, captains, and owners to find opportunities for work or gain valuable insights into the industry.

Overall, gaining sailing experience is an important step towards becoming a yacht captain. It shows your dedication to the profession and helps you acquire the necessary skills and knowledge needed to excel in this role.

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) offers certifications that are highly regarded in the yachting industry. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or just starting out, obtaining RYA certification can help you kick-start your career as a yacht captain.

RYA certification accounts for both the theoretical and practical aspects of sailing. You’ll need to nurture your navigation skills and understand various safety protocols. The RYA courses also cover topics like leadership and teamwork, which are essential for skippers.

One of the first RYA certifications you should consider is the “Day Skipper” qualification. This certification demonstrates your competency as a skipper for typical cruising boats. It covers navigation, boat handling, safety procedures, and more.

If you’re already an experienced sailor and looking to step up, the “Yachtmaster” certifications are more suitable. These certifications are issued by the RYA and are recognized worldwide. They come in three levels – Coastal, Offshore, and Ocean – and each level requires additional experience and competence.

Now, while RYA certifications are highly respected, keep in mind that they are just one aspect of becoming a yacht captain. Networking and gaining practical experience are also crucial for breaking into the industry and enhancing your resume.

Working as a yacht captain requires you to be a skilled multitasker. You’ll manage the finances, oversee the well-being of your crew, and ensure the safety of everyone aboard. Top-notch navigation skills and the ability to make critical decisions quickly are a must.

Remember that earning your RYA certifications will only get you so far. It’s important to continually improve your skills and knowledge, as well as persevere through challenging situations that may arise at sea. Reading books and articles, attending seminars, and participating in surveys related to the yachting world will help you stay up to date with the latest trends and best practices.

Finally, don’t underestimate the power of building relationships within the industry. Creating a strong network of contacts can open doors to better opportunities and allow you to learn from experienced captains and officers. Many yacht captain roles are often filled through word-of-mouth and recommendations.

Take Required Courses

One of the first certifications you should obtain is the Officer of the Watch (OOW) certificate. This certificate is issued by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and is a stepping stone towards becoming a yacht captain. It requires you to complete various modules, including navigation, meteorology, ship handling, and more.

Furthermore, you will need to take the Master 200 and Master 500 courses, which are required for those who wish to become super yacht captains. These courses delve deeper into marine navigation and management principles, preparing you for the challenges you may face as a captain.

In addition to these courses, you should also consider taking courses in first aid and medical care, as well as firefighting and safety training. These skills are essential and will demonstrate your ability to respond effectively in emergency situations.

While gaining the necessary education and certifications is crucial, it is also important to gain actual experience on the water. Look for opportunities to work as a skipper or crew member on different types of vessels. This will provide you with valuable hands-on experience and further enhance your understanding of yacht operations.

Networking and building contacts within the yachting industry is also key. Attend yacht shows, join sailing clubs, and engage with industry professionals. These connections can provide you with insights, job opportunities, and mentorship that will greatly contribute to your career progression.

Finally, keep in mind that becoming a yacht captain requires perseverance and dedication. It may take several years of experience and hard work before you can take on the role of a captain. But with the right qualifications, experience, and a well-crafted CV, you can now begin your journey towards becoming a yacht captain and start earning a salary of up to $3000 per month or more.

Royal Yachting Association RYA Certification

If you’re looking to become a yacht captain, achieving Royal Yachting Association (RYA) certification is a vital step in your journey. The RYA is an internationally recognized organization that provides comprehensive training and certification for individuals seeking to build a career in the yachting industry.

The RYA offers a range of certifications that cater to different levels of experience and skill sets. The most common RYA certificate is the Day Skipper certificate, which is typically taken by beginners who are looking to gain their first level of competence in navigation and sailing. This certification allows you to skipper a yacht in familiar waters during daylight hours.

If you’re more experienced and looking to further enhance your skills and qualifications, the RYA also offers certifications like the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean certificates. These certifications assess your ability to handle a yacht in more challenging conditions and navigate across larger bodies of water.

Having an RYA certification not only demonstrates your competence as a yacht captain but also gives you access to a wealth of information and resources. RYA-certified captains are often highly regarded by yacht owners and are more likely to find well-paying positions aboard prestigious vessels.

It’s worth noting that the RYA certification is slightly different from the Marine and Coastguard Agency (MCA) certifications, which are the internationally recognized certifications for professional yacht crew. However, the RYA certificates are still highly regarded and are widely accepted by yacht owners and charter companies.

A day on sea is classified as 4 hours of non-stoppable sailing; within 5 years, the 360 days will have to be completed. Since you started sailing at age seven, you may not have logged in 360 days cumulatively. You need new experiences that the required paperwork can confirm.

To run boats, two certificates are needed: the Merchant Marine Credential (MMC), issued by the Coast Guard of the United States, and the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), issued by the Department of Homeland Security of the United States.

As a condition of issuance, the MMC requires passing an exam and is, in essence, the captain’s license. Obtaining the MMC at a merchant marine academy could be a requirement for graduation. The TWIC is effectively a U.S. government safety clearance that needs a background check.

6. Submit an Application with the material required

A license from a captain is officially referred to as a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC). There is some other paperwork and completing the application form that you must send to fulfill your packet.

  • Log of time at sea
  • Three notarized letters of recommendation from operators of licensed boats

You can send any of these documents to the Regional Exam Center in person or by mail once you have received them (REC). You must undergo a physical exam and background check after obtaining and processing your paperwork.

You then take the written test upon satisfactory completion and pay the submission and testing fees. All of your documentation will be obtained and checked by the National Maritime Center, after which your license will be sent to you.

How to Become a Yacht Captain [Complete Career Guide]

7. Take the test

When your request has been reviewed, an approval letter will be sent to you for testing. You must then visit the Coast Guard website to register for your exam at the nearby REC.

When you apply for your captain’s license, there is no driving test but a written test. Typically, this review will comprise multiple-choice questions about deck and safety procedures, basic navigation, and rules relating to boat activity in shared waters.

8. Obtain your certificates

Once you submit your fees and application and pass the exam, the REC will process the application and send it for evaluation to the National Maritime Center (NMC).

They will assess your technical credentials, medical background, and overall suitability and safety. Your license and credentials will be printed and mailed to you if your application is approved.

9. Look for a job

As in several different careers, you can work your way up the ladder. Personal relationships are one of the best ways to secure a job on a ship. In addition, you can check online or contact maritime companies.

10. Continue your education

You must consider taking continuing education courses through a maritime academy if you want to increase your chances of finding work or holding your job. These courses may help you learn new industry-related skills and new technologies.

Local News | Late ‘Wicked Tuna’ captain’s family, friends request support for jetty project instead of flowers

Capt. Charlie "Griff" Griffin of "Wicked Tuna" fame died in a boating accident on the Outer Banks on March 4, 2024.

NAGS HEAD — Following the recent loss of two local fishermen around the dangerous Oregon Inlet, grassroots efforts are underway to revitalize the controversial jetty project that the federal government shut down over two decades ago.

“In lieu of flowers, the family requests your support in establishing a jetty project for Oregon Inlet,” states the online obituary for Charles “Charlie” Marshall Griffin , also known as “Grif.”

The 62-year-old, famed boat captain from Nags Head appeared on “Wicked Tuna: Outer Banks,” a National Geographic reality TV series.

Griffin died March 4 “due to a tragic boating accident in the Outer Banks’ Oregon Inlet,” according to his online obituary.

Chad Dunn, 36, of Wanchese, remains missing after being onboard during the same voyage, and the U.S. Coast Guard suspended the search for him the evening of March 5.

A combined celebration of Griffin’s and Dunn’s lives will take place April 28, according to Griffin’s obituary.

“Grif and Chad passing — there’s no legit reason other than that’s how dangerous this inlet is,” Sierra Smallwood said over the phone Monday.

The 33-year-old Wanchese resident started a petition on March 6 to press legislators and elected officials to support the Oregon Inlet jetty project.

The Change.org petition titled, “Navigating Oregon Inlet: The dire need to save our community” garnered over 5,500 signatures in just two days. It had nearly 8,600 signatures by the afternoon of March 12.

She said it has the full backing of “older gentlemen in the fishing industry” and of Griffin’s former wife, Sandy.

“This is what he would have wanted as well — make it safer,” Smallwood said Sandy Griffin told her.

While her family isn’t in the fishing industry, Smallwood said she’s friends with the Griffins’ son, Jake, and that Dunn was a mutual acquaintance.

She hopes to reach 100,000 petition signatures, and there will be a signing station set up at the joint celebration of life.

Both Griffin and Dunn were well-respected watermen who had crossed the inlet countless times, their peers told state legislators as they shared frustration with the lack of dredging due to permitting red tape at a meeting in Manteo last Wednesday.

Oregon Inlet is “the most dangerous inlet on the East Coast,” which cost over 21 people’s lives and 26 boats from the 1960s through 2017, according to a 2017 CURRENTtv documentary on the inlet.

Because Griffin’s death reverberated with so many people due to his “Wicked Tuna” fame, Smallwood said it made sense to “ride that wave of support and ride that wave of acknowledgement” to press for the jetties.

“When will the lives lost trying to cross the bar matter? When will it become important to protect our watermen, community, businesses and families that have lost our loved ones?,” Smallwood wrote in her petition.

“The need for urgent action is underscored by the fact that this vital waterway has been subject to battles for over 40 years, with the proposed twin jetties being the solution to prevent sand buildup and ensure safe navigation,” she wrote.

The history of the jetty project

Ever since “a violent storm” created Oregon Inlet on Sept. 7, 1846, the state’s northernmost inlet that connects the Albemarle and Pamlico sounds and the Atlantic Ocean has been “unstable, treacherous” and steadily moving southward, according to the CURRENTtv documentary.

Congress authorized a dredging project in 1950, but it took a decade to achieve the project specifications through “extensive” dredging — and even then, those conditions were “only maintained sporadically,” according to the documentary.

Still, the deeper channel brought larger fishing vessels and a boon to the fishing industry.

“We lost a lot of people off Oregon Inlet, being trapped offshore, not being able to get in through the inlet in a storm,” Alvah Ward, Jr., a retired Department of Business & Industry director with the state’s Department of Commerce, said in the documentary.

In 1970, Congress authorized jetties and the deepening of the channel from 14 to 20 feet.

“In August of 1981, the U.S. Department of the Interior decided to oppose the project” and asked the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to examine ways to maintain the channel without jetties, according to the documentary.

Bob Peele, director of Wanchese Marine Industrial Park, said the park was North Carolina’s investment in the jetty project, as the federal government asked the state to have an investment.

“In the 1970s the plan was to build a commercial fishing hub, really for the entire Eastern Seaboard of the United States,” Peele said in the documentary. “While this component of the project was built, the jetties never were, so we never got a sustainable, safe, dependable inlet like we were told by the federal government we were going to get.”

The White House Council on Environmental Quality announced in a May 1, 2003, press release that federal agencies had reached consensus, officially ending the “development of the Oregon Inlet jetty proposal.”

That decision concluded “North Carolina’s longest-running environmental battle,” according to a May 3, 2003, article in The Virginian-Pilot . “For only the third time in its 30 years, the White House Council on Environmental Quality mediated a formal standoff between federal agencies.”

While USACE touted the jetties as “the cheapest way to keep the inlet open, the National Marine Fisheries Service worried that it would hurt fish stocks,” according to The Pilot article.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration “opposed the project during formal consultations with the Corps because of a potentially significant impact on the area’s already diminished fisheries,” which depend on the inlet for habitat, according to the White House release.

Two Department of the Interior agencies — the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service — manage the land on either side of Oregon Inlet, and they “expressed concern over potential erosion of national park and national wildlife refuge lands,” according to the release.

The National Park Service manages Cape Hatteras National Seashore on Hatteras Island, south of the inlet, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manages Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge on Bodie Island, to the north.

“In reaching the consensus agreement not to proceed with the project, the agencies found that the available economic data contained uncertainties that raised questions as to whether the project would generate even modest net benefits to the local economy,” according to the release.

Economic studies completed since, one that Dare County commissioned in July 2006 and one in May 2014 by Moffatt & Nichol, rebut that claim.

The Moffatt & Nichol study found that the five commercial sectors tied to Oregon Inlet — commercial fishing; seafood packing and processing; boat building and support services; recreational fishing and tourism; and tournament fishing — provided an economic impact of 4,348 jobs and $548.4 million to the state, according to the documentary.

If the inlet were dependable, its economic impact to the state could exceed $1 billion, according to reports on the study.

“The county certainly supports the jetties,” Dare County Manager Bobby Outten said in a phone call Tuesday. “It has always supported it.”

He noted that locals like Harry Schiffman, who is vice chair of the Oregon Inlet Task Force, have been working on the issue for 40 years.

Outten and two county commissioners will visit Washington, D.C., later this month, and he said he expects the jetties to be a topic of conversation, as always.

“I can’t remember ever going to D.C. without talking about the jetties,” he said. “We’ve always had the support of our congressional delegation. That’s who we’re going to meet with.”

Former Congressman Walter B. Jones in 1968 supported the jetties and other means of improving navigation through the inlet, as did former North Carolina Gov. Robert Scott, according to the CURRENTtv documentary.

More recently, Congressman Greg Murphy (NC-03) introduced legislation in August 2022 to conduct a feasibility study of building two jetties at Oregon Inlet, but the bill never moved out of committee.

A fiscal 2024 community project funding request for $500,000 for “Oregon Inlet Dual Jetty Feasibility Study” is currently listed on his website.

U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis indicated in a statement emailed to The Pilot on Monday that he also backs the project.

“I join the people of Dare County and the fishing community in mourning the tragic loss of life in Oregon Inlet last week,” Tillis said. “Since the news broke of the accident, my office has been in regular communication with both Dare County and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers about the ongoing needs to improve safety and navigation in Oregon Inlet. I will continue to work with local officials and advocate for the federal funds needed to address Oregon Inlet’s unique challenges.”

Neither Murphy nor U.S. Sen. Ted Budd responded to requests for comment by press deadline.

“The community frustration isn’t going to go away,” Smallwood said. “People getting hurt isn’t going to go away.”

How does an NBA team build culture? For the Wizards, it starts with the last man.

yacht captain education

In February 2020, Anthony Gill was in the middle of a game in Moscow, standing in the corner near the basket and waiting, hands in front of his chest, legs coiled, for a teammate to pass him the ball. Gill had never experienced anything like what happened next: A thought struck him, suddenly and with the same brute force as an elbow to the ribs.

“There has to be more to life than this,” he thought.

By that moment in his young life, Gill had already struck gold. A shaky start to his post-college playing days had become a lucrative pro basketball career overseas that took him and his high school sweetheart, Jenna, whom he married shortly before graduating from Virginia in 2016, to Turkey and then Russia.

They learned new cultures and had their first child as Gill made a name for himself on the court. Khimki Moscow gave him an extension in 2018 that Gill says made him one of the highest-paid players in Europe at the time.

Behind the scenes with the Wizards and all that dirty laundry

Yet Gill describes that time in his life as chasing paychecks, and a gnawing sense of dissatisfaction had begun its creep. Maybe it was the base layer of financial security and familial stability that made him want to pursue a dream just then, in that gym in Moscow. Maybe he had just had enough of waiting in the corner.

Finding fulfillment looked like this: At 28, he made a leap and became an NBA rookie, taking a pay cut to sign with the Washington Wizards in December 2020. He has since averaged just 9.8 minutes per game over three seasons but has filled an indelible role.

Gill is the Wizards’ culture guy.

He is the first player to pop up off the sideline to high-five haggard teammates during timeouts. He is the one who asks players and staff members personal questions when they least expect it, who knows his teammates’ middle names and who picks up his own trash in the locker room rather than leaving it for the equipment managers. He hates having microphones and cameras at his charity events, and when told microphones and cameras could help whatever his charitable organization is, he says, “There is no organization; it’s just me and Jenna.”

“If you’re around him or you’ve been his teammate, everybody could probably say the same thing: He is just one of the best people that you’ll ever be around,” said Brooklyn Nets guard Joe Harris, Gill’s college teammate.

“You need a balance of personalities in an NBA locker room. Sometimes there’s a veteran presence: They’ve been around the block, they’ve played for however long, they’re not too concerned with making more money. They’re there for the team; they want to help out, do their part. That’s a different person than a young guy trying to establish himself, trying to get a contract. I feel like AG, regardless of where he is in his NBA tenure, he’s the same way that he was in college. He’s just about the team. He’s about the right stuff.”

‘It’s not normal’

One of an NBA team’s most tried and true bonding tools is dinner on the road. Postgame meals on interminable road trips can foster trust and build chemistry. Letting off steam after a loss or celebrating a win with teammates is crucial for a healthy work environment in which, from October at least until April, players spend more time with their co-workers than they do their loved ones.

Gill took it upon himself to open up the practice this year. Players usually eat among themselves on trips, but the forward began making dinner reservations on the road with a handful of players and an entire department. They broke bread with the training and weight staff in Salt Lake City, with the coaching staff in Milwaukee, with the security team in Portland. At the end of every night, Gill picks up the tab himself or, more often, splits it with another player. It’s a purposeful gesture, a rare moment that inverts the typical player-first NBA model.

“We’re trending in that right direction, getting more connected with the staff,” Kristaps Porzingis said of the outings. “That’s a normal thing in Europe, where everybody is together always. On other teams I’ve seen here, it’s not like that.”

A healthy Bradley Beal is ready to ‘ride it out’ and make playoff push

Gill has always pushed back against basketball norms.

At Virginia, assistant coach Ritchie McKay — Gill’s longtime mentor who’s now the head coach at Liberty — remembers Gill as doing whatever it took to win.

“He usually makes his decisions based on his convictions, not just his opportunities,” McKay said. “He was willing to take on whatever role was necessary for the team in order to get the desired result.”

Often, the results Gill desired had to do with quality of life as an NCAA athlete. He played his freshman year at South Carolina and was one of Virginia Coach Tony Bennett’s first transfers from another Division I program when he arrived in 2012. He brought with him tricks he had learned from the Gamecocks about getting the absolute most out of NCAA rules that governed how much food a program can provide players. Harris said he got the team extra meals and other various benefits.

“This was before Shabazz Napier said he didn’t have enough to eat and the NCAA relaxed all these regulations,” McKay said.

Some of the ideas Gill had for Ronnie Wideman, Virginia’s director of basketball operations, are things the program still implements today.

“It’s not normal. There aren’t many that have come with that perspective,” Wideman said. “He was never afraid to speak his mind. He always was trying to figure out things to better the experience — and it wasn’t just for himself. Kudos to him for having a voice.”

If his purpose in Charlottesville was bettering the college athlete’s experience, his purpose in the NBA is to challenge the notion that the league is just a business. Gill knows that he could be traded in the offseason and that money governs all. But while he’s with the Wizards, he wants to throw himself into creating deep relationships.

“My main goal is to break down barriers between people. I want people to know that we can care about each other and love each other and it’s not taboo,” Gill said. “I know I can play basketball — 100 percent I give every single thing to the Washington Wizards every day. But for me, I’d rather be known as a better person than a basketball player. The basketball window is so short. But the person aspect of it, people will remember. I have a lot of life to live after this.”

Rejecting the hierarchy

The Wizards’ coaching staff started a cultural initiative of its own this year. Each player received a surprise personalized shirt made for him, and coaches revealed them at practice — one day, everyone donned a Bradley Beal St. Louis-themed tee, and Daniel Gafford’s featured one of his favorite anime characters.

Gill’s featured four pictures of himself, each with a word bubble: “I love basketball,” “My bad guys,” “You’re a great player,” and, because Gill doesn’t curse (or smoke or drink, for that matter), “Freak you!”

The North Carolinian isn’t just the Wizards’ culture guy. He’s also the nicest, most polite guy on the team, so much so that when Porzingis arrived in a trade from Dallas, he thought Gill was performing. Nope. “He’s just that super, over-the-top nice guy all the time,” Porzingis said.

Gill is aware that this could get annoying. He doesn’t care. He has won over the locker room anyway.

“He’s a perfect blend,” Beal said. “He helps me all the time if I’m frustrated or the team isn’t getting energy or something. He’s like, ‘Yo, B, it’s time.’ That helps me. I may not even be frustrated; I may just have a blank face. And he’ll be like: ‘B, you all right? I want to make sure you’re good because if you’re good, we’re good.’ I’ll be like: ‘You know what, AG? You right. I’m good.’ He’s probably one of the best teammates I’ve ever had.”

Gill doesn’t subscribe to the assumed NBA hierarchy that places players above everyone else, and he tries to resist falling prey to the spoils of the job.

He gets teased every time he asks the equipment manager for a new pair of shoes because he averages somewhere between four and six pairs per season — insanely low for a professional basketball player. He frequently asks Daniel Villarreal for his opinion on Gill’s game after they work out even though Villarreal is one of the team’s video coordinators, generally considered a low-level position on a coaching staff.

“In my mind, I’m the lowest person on the totem pole. But for him, status is not a thing. He wants to hear what I think,” Villarreal said. “He’s helped me break down some of my own mental barriers because he’s willing to have those conversations — I’ll tell him, ‘If you think I’m helping you, you’re helping me just as much.’ ”

When the offseason comes, Gill plans to do what he did last year and alternate spending two weeks in Washington with two weeks at home in his native Charlotte, surrounded by his extended family, his wife and their three young children. He spends half of the time in Washington in case there’s another player in town so they’ll have someone to work out with and, if need be, another Wizards player as a touchstone.

“I get more out of coming here every day and being the last guy on the roster with no chance to move up — it seems like just working against this brick wall every day — than collecting checks and not playing at the highest level,” Gill said. “So, yes, I like to show up in the summer.”

Gill’s family and his faith ground him more than anything. They are the driving forces behind his unrelenting good-guy personality. Between his family and his role with the Wizards, Gill feels he’s fulfilling his purpose.

McKay, the former Virginia assistant who officiated Gill and Jenna’s wedding nearly seven years ago, knows as much from their conversations.

“God broke the mold,” McKay said. “The motive being so authentic I think is a rarity. I think it’s uncommon. And to some, Anthony is invisible because they judge the outcome or they judge his contribution by his stat line. But when you genuinely invest in someone else’s life — that’s real for him. That’s why I say he’s got to be as good of a teammate or the best teammate in the NBA. Because that’s a profession that can seduce you into thinking you’re more important than others. And AG, he just won’t bite that apple.”
