Find out more about how Crew Solutions mentoring could work for you, your boat and your crew.

Yacht Industry talent development planning

On our watch.

Let’s be honest, sexism, ageism, racism, abuse, gender, pay disparity and mental health issues are endemic in the yacht industry, which still lags behind land-based hospitality providers in adopting best practice in diversity, equality and safeguarding procedures. However, with a growing awareness of the scale of the challenge and a new generation at the helm, this is changing.

There are also strong economic and legal factors – from unenforced liabilities to the direct and indirect cost of high crew churn – that are driving the uptake of better working policies and practices. For employers looking at how the yacht industry employment transformation will affect them, the question is can I afford to take a business-as-usual approach? Our focus on awareness and communication makes Crew Solutions part of the answer and the perfect talent management and crew retention strategy partner.

Building positive and supportive work environments

Yacht crew mental health awareness & communication, crew  wellness.

Unsurprisingly given both the environment and the nature of the work, mental health is an issue in the yacht industry with one-in-three crew members admitting to suffering from stress, anxiety or loneliness.

By combining an understanding of the regulations, onboard policies and mental health training that should be in place to safeguard crew well-being, proactive mentoring with Crew Solutions will aim to improve the culture onboard and increase the personal resilience and capacity and mind set of the crew.

I have had the pleasure and good fortune to work with the founder of Crew Solutions and can state that I gained so much from her depth of knowledge in regards to handling the many, varied and often perceived unpredictable HR issues that appeared onboard. It allowed me to develop both personally and in a capacity as a leading Crew member and I have gained not only insight into a whole new way of leading a crew but it has altered me in that my own confidence was elevated. This was a life altering time in my life.

I have managed the impossible! Without this woman I would not be where I am today. This industry is not for everybody but suddenly I am somebody that it is absolutely right for.

I spent one of the most growthful times of my life in the presence of the Crew Solutions Founder.  It was a deeply difficult time for me where my experience and personal confidence did not allow me to competently deal with situations to which I was bound.  She not only gave me some very great truisms to consider, which I might add where uncomfortable at the time but she was a rock that I could run to when all else seemed to be getting away from me.  She had my back and she allowed me to find my route to a much better existence onboard.  I moved Yachts and continued to work with her when there were moments of uncertainty in my work and career.  I can honestly say that I have grown both personally and in my career having used her very open knowledge and professionalism.  It rubs off on you.

Superyacht training and certification

Superyacht UK 2019 AGM St Katharine Dock London

Read on to learn about the key areas of superyacht training and certification that you might need to consider and click on the button below to access Superyacht UK\’s members that specialise in superyacht training and recruitment.

Note you should include on your CV full details of what you have achieved and an outline of what skills you have learnt (for example a brief syllabus).  This will help potential employers to understand exactly what training you have received, even if they are not personally familiar with every course.

MCA certification

MCA stands for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. It is the organisation responsible for maritime safety in the UK.  This role encompasses setting the standard for training and certification for seafarers, including the minimum requirements for certification of superyacht crew.  The MCA is an agency of the Department for Transport of the British Government.

Even if you have completed similar courses, unless they are approved by the MCA they will not be recognised for use in the superyacht industry.

Courses include:

  • MCA STCW Basic Safety Training Certificates
  • MCA Yacht Rating Certificate
  • MCA Deck Officer Certificates (Officer of the Watch (OOW), Chief Mate and Master)
  • MCA Engineering Officer Certificates (Chief Engineer)

If you have any previous maritime experience, or wish to talk to someone in more detail about which level of certification is right for you, please contact the MCA directly on 023 8032 9231.  Or visit the MCA site for further information.

RYA Qualifications

RYA stands for the Royal Yachting Association, which is the UK’s national association for all forms of recreational and competitive boating.  RYA’s training schemes for powered and sailing craft provide qualifications for skippers, instructors and water sports professionals worldwide.

RYA Yachtmaster and Yachtmaster Ocean

The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence is gained by taking an exam in either a sailing or motor yacht – your certificate will be endorsed accordingly.  There is no formal training course leading up to the exam, but those who have not previously taken RYA courses often find it useful to book themselves in for some informal training prior to taking an exam.  You will need to get your Certificate commercially endorsed for it to be valid for working on board superyachts.

The Yachtmaster Ocean exam is an oral and written test of your knowledge of ocean passage making including planning, navigation, worldwide meteorology, crew management, yacht preparation, maintenance and repairs.  You will also be questioned on your sights taken at sea during an ocean passage.  Again, you will need to get your Certificate commercially endorsed.

IYT (International Yacht Training) is a US-based organisation and its equivalent courses are also recognised by the MCA.

Degrees and Foundation Degrees

A Foundation Degree has been developed for the Superyacht sector. Known as the FdSc Operational Yacht Science, it is usually delivered over a period of three years in conjunction with other training or a ‘cadetship’.  Some training providers are now offering a full programme of training to provide you with a broad overview of all superyacht operations including deck duties, engineering and hotel services, and a ‘fast-track’ route to Deck Officer OOW certification.

There is often the opportunity to ‘upgrade’ your Foundation Degree to a full degree with further study to achieve a BSc (Hons) Marine Studies (Ocean Yachting), for example.

There are benefits with both the foundation degree route, and the more traditional on-the-job certification route and you should consider these carefully before making your decision.  Find out as much information as you can about your chosen route before embarking on it.

Stewarding and Hospitality

Marine and non-marine training providers offer training courses for stewarding and catering skills such as:

  • Silver service
  • Wine appreciation
  • Table management
  • Bar management

Courses also exist covering an overview of all of these types of skills, sometimes including certifications such as STCW Basic Safety Training or RYA qualifications.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY

Amazing experience with both the STCW and GUEST interior training. The biggest plus with Seascope compared to other maritime schools is the amount of hands on training. The instructors want for you to thoroughly understand and master the course objectives and truly want the best for you. Erin Hill
A thoroughly professional and enjoyable experience doing my STCW refresher course with Seascope last week, with enthusiastic and diligent instructors, hence it was mine and the entire crews second time doing our refresher courses with them. William Broderick
I can not recommend Sophie and the team at Seascope highly enough. They went out of their way to accommodate myself last minute and the course was of the highest standard. I will definitely return! Alan Vermeulen
Went to SEASCOPE Antibes for the STCW. It was an amazing week, Ged and Paul were really kind and helpful. I 100% recommend doing a training with them! Alicia Soreau

Cambridge do the double in 2024 Boat Race

The victorious Cambridge Men and Women’s Blue Boat crews

Cambridge have done the double in the Boat Race, winning both the Men’s and Women’s races in a thrilling day of action on the Thames.

Despite both the Cambridge Men and Women’s Blue Boats starting as underdogs, Cambridge emerged victorious in both races.

In the 78th Women’s Race, despite Oxford taking an early lead, Cambridge caught up and then overtook Oxford. Oxford cox Joe Gellett raised an appeal at the end of the race, arguing that the Cambridge boat had crossed their path, but after a discussion with umpire Richard Phelps the appeal was dismissed.

In the 169th Men’s Race, Cambridge took an early lead but slowed towards the end with stroke Matt Edge struggling, but with his teammates digging in they held on for what was in the end a comfortable victory.

All in all it was a fantastic weekend for Cambridge, with the Light Blues dominating the results, with Goldie winning the Men’s Reserve race, and the Cambridge Men’s Lightweight and Women’s Lightweight Crews winning on Friday.

“This Boat Race just means so much, this Club just means so much” said victorious Men’s President Seb Benzecry.

“This season has been the most amazing season, it’s been challenging, we’ve pushed ourselves harder than any team I’ve been a part of before. We knew Oxford would pose a huge challenge this year to us, we knew we had to step on. I couldn’t be prouder of the ways the guys responded to that challenge, in a year when basically every single boat was an underdog.”

Women’s President Jenna Armstrong said she was almost pinching herself at the result.

“I almost can’t believe it. This year we were slated as the underdogs going in to the race. Our race plan was to go out and row our best race, go as fast as possible and hang on and wait for an opportunity to pop up - and that’s what we did.”

Cambridge University Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice, who was watching her first Boat Race after joining in July last year, said it had been a fantastic weekend.

“It was brilliant, utterly brilliant – everything I expected and more,” she said. “This is my first time at the Boat Race obviously and I heard Oxford started as favourites so I didn’t expect Cambridge to come out ahead like this.

“I went out to see the Women’s Blue Boat training earlier this year and today I could see the fruits of the labour that they put in, going out every day at 5.30 in the morning – it’s incredible.”

Oxford rower says Boat Race crew suffered 'E. coli outbreak' before defeat and complains of 'poo in the water'

High levels of E. coli, which can cause a range of serious infections and other side-effects, were found earlier this week along the River Thames course taken by Oxford and Cambridge, but, despite warnings, some rowers became ill.

A rower on the Oxford team which lost the Boat Race on Saturday has complained about "poo in the water" and claimed that sickness caused by an outbreak of E. coli played a part in their defeat.

There were warnings this week before the Boat Race about pollution levels in the River Thames and the possible risk to competitors.

But the historic race went ahead, and both the men's and women's races were won by the University of Cambridge on Saturday afternoon.

Afterwards, the University of Oxford's Leonard Jenkins told the BBC his team "had a few guys go down pretty badly with E. coli, this morning, I was throwing up, I was not sure there would be a chance for me to be in the boat".

He added: "But I kept that quiet and that is on my shoulders. I'm not sure if it was the right choice because I don't feel I had much to give.

"It would be a lot nicer if there wasn't as much poo in the water.

"It's not to take away from Cambridge, as we may not have beaten them even if we were all on top form."

However, Mr Jenkins' team-mate Will Denegri was more reluctant to blame team illnesses and water conditions for their loss.

He said: "This week we've had three people who have had to miss sessions because they've had stomach bugs, essentially.

"Whether that's related to E. coli in the river I don't know, but it's certainly not helped our campaign, and it's a poor excuse.

"It's not an excuse, but it definitely hasn't helped our preparation."

In a statement, organisers of the Boat Race said: "The Boat Race is aware of Leonard Jenkins' comments about a sickness bug affecting their preparations this week.

"We're not in a position to speculate about the causes of this sickness bug but we have contacted Oxford University Boat Club to seek further clarity."

'National disgrace'

Earlier this week, it was revealed that high levels of E. coli, which can cause a range of serious infections and other side-effects, had been found along the Boat Race course.

Oxford's coach Sean Bowden called it a "national disgrace".

Campaigning group River Action said its testing suggested the source of pollution is from Thames Water discharging sewage directly into the river and its tributaries.

Rowers were told not to enter or swallow the water, as well as to take other preventative measures, such as covering up scrapes with waterproof plasters.

Heeding the warnings, the winning Cambridge women's team lifted their cox Hannah Murphy up inside the boat, rather than throwing her into the water, as is traditional.
