Record your race and sail smarter

The raceQs’ tracker app records sailing data with your phone and creates a 3D replay of your race online. The 3D replay will show your boat and any other boats who were recording in your area. Select anyone in the replay to learn from the top performers in your fleet. Watch the replay with your crew and evaluate your race in the club, and at home online.

You can choose to upload your recorded tracks immediately over cell phone signal, or save them to upload over Wi-Fi. Turn on “Live Broadcast” and your friends can watch your race "live", on your raceQs’ journal page.

The raceQs’ app is more than just a tracking device. It also records the motion of your boat using the accelerometer and gyroscope in your phone. Watch your race replay to evaluate your tacking patterns, boat handling, heel angle, and more. It will change the way you race.

Will other boats show up in my replay?

All boats recording in the same geographic area, at the same time, will automatically show up in your race replay.

Do I need cell phone coverage for the phone app to work?

No cell phone or internet coverage is required for regatta tracking, although you need it for a live broadcast. Just record your race with the phone app, and upload it later.

Will the app work down below?

Yes. Your phone GPS will still work through most sailboat decks.

Do I need to stop and start the app between the races?

No, unless you want to save battery life. You can segment the races afterward, here’s a tutorial.

Will the app track me all the way home and publish my location online?

If you forget to shut off your app, we designed a failsafe that will shut off tracking once you reach a certain speed in your car.

1. Setup your Event

Enter your name, select Club, Race and Division. Alternatively select Personal Tracking. Personal tracks are stored for 2 days then incrementally deleted.

GPS Tracking via YB Tracking

Each boat racing is equipped with a YB Tracking satellite tracker that sends boat GPS information (location, speed, and direction) every 15 minutes and displays the location and track on the race course.  

There are two ways to see the live tracking:

From Your Computer

Tracking for this year’s race will be available on the web.

Ensure that your computer has a relatively recent browser installed.

Download the free app for the best experience on your mobile device (iOS or Android).

"Buy" the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac in the YB Tracking app. The Race will be available to download the race on Thursday of race week.  The race will be available at no charge to our fans and friends; the Mac is covering the cost of it.

Our YB trackers have very large battery capacities, and are designed to work for long durations. When the trackers arrive with you, they just need to be attached to the stern rail of the boat using our quick velcro-mount, and then turned on by pressing a button.

Yacht race tracking.

Yacht racing and rally organises now have a very cost effective way to provide a public race map. The Blue Water Tracks service is provided free of charge to yacht racing organisations. The service is funded by the philanthropy of the Dunoon Family Trust to ensure the highest level of infrastructure and service quality. Significant resource has been made available in the development of this service, ensuring that every race organiser has the tools needed for an effortless race tracking experience that enhances safety for all competitors.

Grant Dunoon

Grant Dunoon founded Blue Water Tracks to deliver a service to yacht racing organisation and at the same time make safety affordable for every competitor.

In 2012 Grant was the skipper who rescued 6 crew when their yacht sank suddenly after the loss of their liferaft just before midnight during a devastating storm that wiped out the Melbourne to Port Fairy yacht race. Read more about it here .

The YB Tracking iPhone/iPad app allows you to follow live race tracking on your mobile - updated to feature everything we track including yacht races, car rallies, adventure racing and more. Information in the race viewer is also controlled by the race organisers - not YB Tracking. For instance, if a race organiser has not provided pictures for the teams, then pictures will not appear in this app or on our web-based viewer. Ratings and Reviews

Kinda functional, poor user interface design.

I appreciate this is a free app and by and large it works ok. However there’s no obvious way to remove races you’re no longer interested in, which reflects a generally poor user experience. I’ve also noticed that I will sometimes have to launch the app three or four times before it actually works.

Very unstable app

This app is gradually getting less stable. Lack of development and updates is showing with various usability issues being encountered. For example (using the RORC Myth of Malham race) the app has frozen 3 times during zoom. It now only loads with a blank page or displays the map but is locked. Yellow Brick you need to do more work on this as it won’t cope with the Fastnet 2023.

Looks good but doesn’t update

Just downloaded the app to follow the GGR2022. Worked the first few days of the race - now no longer updating positions. This requires setting up laptop and looking at the website. It will be extremely frustrating if this is the best it can do as the race will be over nine months!

Technology is evolving. Gone are the days when sailors relied purely on the basic equipment on board their boat — a chartplotter, GPS navigation and a pilot of the region. Nowadays, almost every modern sailor has a bunch of apps installed on their smartphone. So, we've asked our skippers which are their favourite apps they use the most. Here is our list of the top 10 sailing  apps  tried and tested over hundreds of logged miles.

1. Navionics: Boating Marine & Lakes

In our opinion, this is the best app for navigating your boat (but also for diving, fishing or other water sports). You'll find an incredible amount of information in it, from conventional GPS navigation to bay depths, harbour data, and contacts . Plus, it allows you to share your live location so your friends or family can follow your route online. We at yachting.com consider Navionics to be a basic part of any smartphone sailing kit ! The only downside is that it is a paid app, but it's worth every penny.

2. Windy.com app

The Windy app and the windy.com website are one of the most well-known sources for boaters to check the weather forecast. In addition to wind direction and strength, you can find forecasts for temperature, waves, rain and cloud cover. Just like with any forecast model, it can't be relied upon 100%, so you should always pay attention to the actual conditions around you as well. Windy Premium, the paid version provides a more accurate forecast and more regular updates without ads.

YACHTING.COM TIP :  Clouds  have been a source of fascination since the dawn of time. However, you don't need to be an expert meteorologist to know what to expect from looking at the clouds. 3. Anchor Watch / Alarm

An anchor drag alarm  or anchor watch basically does exactly what the name suggests — it emits a signal (alarm) when your boat drifts outside your designated security zone when at anchor . There are many apps available with this function, but Anchor Alarm is the one that works best for us. When you drop anchor, simply press the position button and adjust the perimeter you don't want to leave — for example, after taking into account the surrounding rocks and your proximity to shore, you might decide that you want to set the perimeter so that your anchor won't drag more than 15 metres. The app will remember where your anchor is located and will keep an eye on your position throughout the night. Should your boat move outside the set boundaries, it will trigger an alarm on your phone.

Every skipper should have a masterful knowledge of sailing knots for every situation and should ideally be able to teach the crew. But, at the very least, you could install an app on their phones and get them to learn themselves. MySea is a free interactive guide to marinas, harbours, jetties, buoy fields and restaurants in Croatia, Greece and Turkey . For each marina, it provides information on the type of mooring, safety regarding the direction of winds, services (showers, toilets, petrol pumps, supermarkets, etc.), entertainment and dining options on-site. There is also a current weather forecast for the area with a bird's eye view. The app includes thousands of user reviews on individual marinas and berths can be booked directly via the app. Even admission to Croatian national parks can be paid for via MySea.

8. Marine Traffic

Marine Traffic comes in especially useful if you are sailing in areas where there are a lot of cargo ships. This platform provides real-time information on marine traffic, live port arrivals and departures, as well as gross tonnage and registration number of the cargo ships moving in your area. If you are heading to the English Channel, the Baltic Sea or are planning a voyage further offshore, the risk of collision with a cargo ship is much higher. Bear in mind that the captain of a large tanker cannot see small sailing vessels, so it is best to give them a wide berth.

Similar to Marine Traffic, VesselFinder provides a live map, on their website and app, of the network ships using the AIS system — over 200,000 ships a day! In addition, it allows you to search for a specific ship and find its current location and more information on the vessel itself. View the ships and their position on the map in real-time or look at their previous routes, sailing history and, where applicable, marina reservations. It is also possible to create your own fleet of friends and track the individual boats of the whole group.

2000-2024   •   The most boats ever will compete in the 100th Bayview Yacht Club race to Mackinac Island Billed on its website as the “world’s longest continuously run long-distance freshwater yacht race,” the 100th Bayview Mackinac Race is set to start Saturday. A record-setting 334 boats have registered for the 100th year of the race, shattering the record of 316 in 1985 and a huge contrast compared with the 200 boats that raced last year, said David Stoyka, spokesman for the Bayview Yacht Club, which puts on the race. Bayview Yacht Club says boats start leaving the Black River in Port Huron around 8 a.m. on race day and will continue leaving until around noon. From the Black River, they will proceed up the St. Clair River, under the Blue Water Bridge, into Lake Huron. The first scheduled start time in Lake Huron is 11:30 a.m., with starts every 10 minutes until approximately 1:30 p.m. The starts may be delayed due to weather conditions. This year, for the 100th running, the race will follow the original 1925 route and span 204 nautical miles. From the starting point, the boats will head north along the Michigan shoreline, passing south of Bois Blanc Island, sailing west to east at the finish line between Round Island and Mackinac Island, organizers said. The range of boats are expected to finish in between 30 and 60 hours. The sailors Teams at all skill levels have entered the race, which draws competitors from around the world.  The highly skilled racers know they will cross the bow of competitors within inches. Still, there's always risk of a crash with the slightest miscalculation. "Everybody recognizes this is super intense," said champion sailor  Tim Prophit , 65, of St. Clair Shores, past commodore of Bayview Yacht Club and owner of Fast Tango, a North American 40 sailboat. The teams are vying for trophies and flags to show their accomplishments. The J.L. Hudson Trophy is awarded to the boat with the best corrected time in Division I, and the Canadian Club Classic Trophy is awarded to the boat with the best corrected time in Division II. Here’s what we know about the passengers. Mike Lynch and his family Mr. Lynch, 59, is a British software entrepreneur who had once been described as his country’s Bill Gates. He founded the software firm Autonomy, which analyzed clients’ unorganized data, and turned it into one of the most prominent British technology companies of its time. He became a widely known corporate leader, who advised David Cameron, the British prime minister at the time, and joined the board of the BBC. In 2011, Mr. Lynch sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion, which was far above its market value, earning him hundreds of millions. But HP investors almost immediately soured on the transaction, and the American tech giant quickly fired its chief executive — and then Mr. Lynch. HP later accused Mr. Lynch of misleading it about the state of Autonomy’s business, setting off a decade-long legal ordeal for the British executive, who denied the accusations. U.S. prosecutors charged him and other executives with fraud, and Autonomy’s chief financial officer was convicted in 2018. Despite appeals to the British government, Mr. Lynch was extradited to the United States last year and was confined to a townhouse in San Francisco ahead of his criminal trial, which began in March. Facing the possibility of decades in prison if convicted, Mr. Lynch and another colleague were instead acquitted of all charges. An official in Palermo, Sicily’s capital, said on Thursday that Mr. Lynch’s body had been recovered. His wife, Angela Bacares, 57, accompanied him on the yacht, and she was rescued on Monday when it sank. She was a consistent presence at his trial in the United States. Records show that she controlled Revtom, the company listed as the owner of the Bayesian. The body of Hannah Lynch , Mr. Lynch and Ms. Bacares’s 18-year-old daughter, was thought to be recovered on Friday. The other guests Jonathan Bloomer, 70, chair of Morgan Stanley’s international arm and the chairman of Hiscox, an insurance provider that trades on the London Stock Exchange, was on the yacht when it sank, along with his wife, Judy Bloomer, 71. Their bodies are thought to be among those recovered, but Italian authorities have not identified them. Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a New York-based partner at the international law firm Clifford Chance, was also on the yacht.
