Offshore sailor Henry Bomby shares his top iPad yacht apps for racing and cruising

Yachting World

  • April 7, 2015

Solo sailor Henry Bomby uses an iPad for everything from navigation and AIS to weather forecasts and routeing. We asked him to choose his favourite apps

yacht race tracker app

Henry Bomby, 23, is one of Britain's top young offshore sailors. Photo: Brian Carlin

Few new products have changed the way I navigate at sea so much as the tablet computer. In my case that means the iPad, although most of the sailing apps I mention here are also available for Android tablets.

Although iPads should only be used as a back-up or as an aid to a standalone navigation set-up, their high GPS speeds and accurate charting applications make them really useful as chartplotters. Only the 3G iPad has a built-in GPS aerial (lower spec models use wi-fi). This will pinpoint your location regardless of whether or not you have a mobile phone signal.

It just connects via bluetooth so you can mount it anywhere in the boat. I use the GNS 2000 MFI, which costs £89.50. Although it is a bit of a bulky set-up, it has a super-fast GPS speed and is a cheaper option than upgrading to a new iPad 3G.

There are two ways to use an iPad, or other tablet device, on board: as a standalone computer using apps or as a remote display link to another computer (or as both). All of the best boating apps can be downloaded from the likes of iTunes or Google Play and manufacturers’ websites are provided for more information.

Best iPad apps for navigation

Navigation iSailor

Transas iSailor

This is my favourite navigation app. iSailor has one of the largest chart databases worldwide. Its charts are generated from official vector charts and I have found them to be very reliable. It’s a useful tool when you’re racing as far inshore as you dare off coasts such as Brittany. The charts are continually updated and the updates are free. However, charts per zone are among the most expensive, the UK South Coast charts cost £17.49. Price: app free, average chart price £17.49. www.isailor.us

Navigation Time Zero 2

TimeZero is a part of MaxSea, the renowned routeing software company. An appealing part of this app is that you can opt to use raster charts, which are scanned copies of paper charts, for many areas – a comfortable transition to electronic navigation for anyone used to paper charts. You can also download areas to your iPad, so chart loading while zooming in and out is extremely fast. TimeZero provides a 3D perspective, which is great for entering unfamiliar ports. I use this app more and more. Price: app free, average chart price £34.99. www.maxsea.com/maxsea_timezero_ipad_app

Navigation Navionics

The most popular charting app, Navionics has similar tools and functions to TimeZero. I don’t use it because I have the routeing program Adrena for more complex tasks. However, it is a very sound bet and its charts for numerous sailing areas are cheaper than those of iSailor. For example, high-definition charts covering the whole of UK and the Netherlands cost just £39.99. Price: app free, average chart price £34.99. www.navionics.com/en/mobile-pc-app

Best iPad apps for race starts

Race starts iRegatta

This is packed with features, including GPS, AIS and an NMEA input for displaying boat instrument data (available as additional in-app purchases). I primarily use this for the start line feature. It calculates line bias and has a metre countdown for distance to the line. Price: iRegatta Basic £6.99. www.zifigo.com

Race starts TacTic

This app has impressive starting features, including time and distance to the line, and it works well as a big and easily viewable COG and SOG display, freeing up your other instruments to display other useful information. Better still, it’s free.

Price: free. www.itactic.it

Best iPad apps for weather forecasting

Weather sailgrib

This app demonstrates the potential of tablet navigation. It is only available on Android for now, but there are plans for a release in the Apple app store soon. It lets you download and view weather models from a variety of sources, including Great Circle, Saildocs and NOAA. You can run routeing information through the app. A growing catalogue of polars helps make the routeing calculations more accurate. GRIB files, polars, routes and routeings are all saved in standard formats and are transferable. Impressive. Price: standard app free, Pro £3.99, WR routeing £20. www.sailgrib.com

Weather Weather4D

The iPad equivalent to SailGrib, though also available as an Android app, Weather4D is less powerful, but is still packed with some great features. It has a good GRIB viewer, including a 3D view of the world, which I really like. As with SailGrib, a subscription allows you to download different weather models such as GFS, CMC and the French WRF model, down to a resolution of 0.04°. Weather4D Pro can run routeing in a similar way to SailGrib. However, the operation for this is more complicated. Good, but not quite the complete package yet. Price: standard £7.49, Pro £23.99. www.weather4d.com/en

Best apps for wind tracking

Wind tracking iRegatta

iRegatta has a great, user-friendly interface to track the wind. You can set the wind angle on each tack and can shoot head-to-wind just before the start by taking a photo directly into the wind. The app then helps to keep track of windshifts and easily illustrates the timings of an oscillating breeze with a neat diagram in the bottom right of the screen.

Price: iRegatta Basic £6.99. www.zifigo.com

Best apps for tides

Tides planner

Tides Planner

This is my favourite app to keep track of tides and currents. You simply scroll through its list of destinations to find the tidal height at different times at 8,000 world locations, including all US, Europe and Australasia stations. Tidal stream data is provided for UK, Ireland, Belgium, Holland and parts of Germany and Denmark. The app also has useful information such as tidal coefficients and the times of sunrise and sunset. It is free, but it’s worth buying its tidal atlases of the UK coast and the Bay of Biscay for only £2.49. You can easily flick through this to get an understanding of what the tide is doing.

Price: free, UK/Bay of Biscay tidal atlas £2.49.

www.tucabo.com/products/tides-planner

My iPad set-up

my ipad setup

I use my iPad on deck all the time, so I need a fixed point on deck where it can be left on charge and can be detached easily if I need to move around. I have mounted it near the companionway, on the starboard side using 3M Dual Lock, the very strong Velcro-style fastenting strips.

Secured by this, my iPad is easy to view from the helming position on both sides and is well protected, so I can use it when starting a race as easily as when I head offshore and switch it to charting and navigation, using software to display AIS data and position myself within a fleet. I also have a 12V charging port just inside the companionway, so that the iPad is charging when it is in its dock.

Short-handed offshore racing is all about making life as easy as possible and the iPad is a great tool for supplying all the information I need, and more.

Henry Bomby, 23, is one of Britain’s most promising young offshore solo sailors. As part of the Artemis Offshore Academy Scholarship scheme, he completed a fully funded season in the solo one-design Figaro class. He sailed in this circuit for a further year and is currently competing for his third year on the Figaro circuit. See www.henrybomby.com

This is an extract from an article from Yachting World July 2014

  • The 10 best smartphone apps for sailors: proven through experience

Technology is evolving. Gone are the days when sailors relied purely on the basic equipment on board their boat — a chartplotter, GPS navigation and a pilot of the region. Nowadays, almost every modern sailor has a bunch of apps installed on their smartphone. So, we've asked our skippers which are their favourite apps they use the most. Here is our list of the top 10 sailing  apps  tried and tested over hundreds of logged miles.

Navionics app logo

1. Navionics: Boating Marine & Lakes

In our opinion, this is the best app for navigating your boat (but also for diving, fishing or other water sports). You'll find an incredible amount of information in it, from conventional GPS navigation to bay depths, harbour data, and contacts . Plus, it allows you to share your live location so your friends or family can follow your route online. We at yachting.com consider Navionics to be a basic part of any smartphone sailing kit ! The only downside is that it is a paid app, but it's worth every penny.

  • Purchase Navionics at  www.navionics.com

Windy app logo

2. Windy.com app

The Windy app and the windy.com website are one of the most well-known sources for boaters to check the weather forecast. In addition to wind direction and strength, you can find forecasts for temperature, waves, rain and cloud cover. Just like with any forecast model, it can't be relied upon 100%, so you should always pay attention to the actual conditions around you as well. Windy Premium, the paid version provides a more accurate forecast and more regular updates without ads.

  • Download the Windy app at  windy.app
YACHTING.COM TIP :  Clouds  have been a source of fascination since the dawn of time. However, you don't need to be an expert meteorologist to know what to expect from looking at the clouds. In fact, this knowledge is practically essential for sailors. So, how do you read the clouds? Check out our article to find out —  Sailing: how to predict the weather by reading the clouds .

Anchor alarm logo

3. Anchor Watch / Alarm

An anchor drag alarm  or anchor watch basically does exactly what the name suggests — it emits a signal (alarm) when your boat drifts outside your designated security zone when at anchor . There are many apps available with this function, but Anchor Alarm is the one that works best for us. When you drop anchor, simply press the position button and adjust the perimeter you don't want to leave — for example, after taking into account the surrounding rocks and your proximity to shore, you might decide that you want to set the perimeter so that your anchor won't drag more than 15 metres. The app will remember where your anchor is located and will keep an eye on your position throughout the night. Should your boat move outside the set boundaries, it will trigger an alarm on your phone.

  • Get the app on the App Store or Google Play.
YACHTING.COM TIP:  Review the basic rules of anchoring in our  complete guide to anchoring and moorings . We've covered two specific scenarios where you might need a little extra help. The first is on  how to prepare your boat for a stormy night at anchor and the second one is a guide to the Mediterranean Mooring technique, a combination of anchor and mooring lines often used in Greece —  How to moor stern-to: a step-by-step guide .

Navily app logo

Navily is more of an app for recreational sailors where you'll find more than 14,000 anchorages and 6,000 marinas with photos and reviews from the community. There are also more than 700 partner marinas where you can book a berth directly via the app. The premiums version unlocks core features, such as automatic itineraries and distance calculation at sea. Navily claims to be the most innovative cruising guide.

  • The app is available at navily.com

5. How to Tie Knots

Every skipper should have a masterful knowledge of sailing knots for every situation and should ideally be able to teach the crew. But, at the very least, you could install an app on their phones and get them to learn themselves. For this, we recommend the app How to Tie Knots which uses 3D animation to provide a realistic experience of tying knots using a virtual rope. There are countless apps out there for learning to tie knots so if you find something more suited to you, there are plenty of options. After all, they all have the same goal: to teach you how to tie knots.

  • Find this app and similar ones on the App Store or Google Play.

Seahelp app logo

This is one of the best-known  breakdown assistance services for sailors. SeaHelp is a 24/7 rescue service that includes insurance and reliable assistance at sea should you break down or have an emergency. There are three types of membership available online and the app can then help you with things like towing your boat, starting, bringing fuel, fetching parts, freeing lines from the propeller and weather advice. The SOS button  can also be used by non-members  of this service and sends out a distress SMS with your current location and mobile number. After receiving the message, SeaHelp immediately calls back to verify there is a problem and if there is a real emergency, sends a rescue boat. If you sail frequently or are planning a more challenging voyage, we highly recommend setting up this service.

  • Find the app and purchase a membership at sea-help.eu .

MySea app logo

MySea is a free interactive guide to marinas, harbours, jetties, buoy fields and restaurants in Croatia, Greece and Turkey . For each marina, it provides information on the type of mooring, safety regarding the direction of winds, services (showers, toilets, petrol pumps, supermarkets, etc.), entertainment and dining options on-site. There is also a current weather forecast for the area with a bird's eye view. The app includes thousands of user reviews on individual marinas and berths can be booked directly via the app. Even admission to Croatian national parks can be paid for via MySea.

Marine Traffic app logo

8. Marine Traffic

Marine Traffic comes in especially useful if you are sailing in areas where there are a lot of cargo ships. This platform provides real-time information on marine traffic, live port arrivals and departures, as well as gross tonnage and registration number of the cargo ships moving in your area. If you are heading to the English Channel, the Baltic Sea or are planning a voyage further offshore, the risk of collision with a cargo ship is much higher. Bear in mind that the captain of a large tanker cannot see small sailing vessels, so it is best to give them a wide berth.

  • Take a look at the live map of cargo ships at www.marinetraffic.com

VesselFinder logo

9. VesselFinder

Similar to Marine Traffic, VesselFinder provides a live map, on their website and app, of the network ships using the AIS system — over 200,000 ships a day! In addition, it allows you to search for a specific ship and find its current location and more information on the vessel itself. View the ships and their position on the map in real-time or look at their previous routes, sailing history and, where applicable, marina reservations. It is also possible to create your own fleet of friends and track the individual boats of the whole group.

  • Find out more about the app at www.vesselfinder.com

Map of Vesselfinder

The VesselFinder app displays current marine traffic on a map, but you can also search for a specific ship, and view its current location and sailing history

Tide Alert app logo

10. Tide Alert (NOAA)

Recommended for all those who sail in tidal waters (France, the Baltic, Scotland...), it provides all the information you need so you don't get caught out by the tide, such as predicted tide height, the moon phase, etc. The whole Tide Alert (NOAA) environment is user-friendly, intuitive and easy to use. Plus, there is an alarm feature to alert you to a low or high tide. And best of all, the app even works offline if your signal drops out.

  • Download it on the App Store or Google Play.

Why the 2024 Belmont Stakes is at Saratoga Race Course and not at Belmont Park

yacht race tracker app

Those tuning into the 2024 Belmont Stakes on Saturday will notice a few different things about this year's race, other than there will be no Triple Crown winner for the sixth straight year.

Also, it's not being held at Belmont Park, in Elmont, New York, where the "Third Jewel of the Triple Crown" has been mostly held in this current location since 1905, when the race moved from Morris Park Racecourse in Westchester County, New York.

The Belmont Stakes is in its second year on FOX Sports after the network signed an eight-year deal to broadcast the race. Veteran broadcaster Frank Mirahmadi will call the race.

Why the 2024 Belmont Stakes was moved

In December 2023, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said the 2024 Belmont Stakes would be at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York, some three hours north of Belmont Park because the racetrack was undergoing a major renovation.

The last time the Belmont Stakes was not held at Belmont Park was in 1967 because of another renovation at the venue. The races from 1963 to 1967 took place at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, New York.

The renovation, which will cost nearly half a billion dollars, is expected to last through 2025 and be ready for the race in 2026. It includes demolishing the current Belmont Park grandstand and clubhouse, replacing fencing throughout the backstretch, and modernizing the barn area.

The Belmont Stakes purse will increase from $1.5 million to $2 million, and the track length will be shortened from 1 1/2 miles to 1 1/4 miles because of the track shape. In past years, the Belmont Stakes crowd has topped out at over 100,000 spectators. Saturday's race at Saratoga is expected to entertain approximately 50,000.

Trump maintains big lead over Biden and RFK Jr. despite felony conviction, Iowa Poll shows

yacht race tracker app

  • Trump leads Biden 50% to 32% among likely Iowa voters.
  • Biden's approval rating among all Iowans has remained low at 28%.
  • Iowans overwhelmingly believe the country is headed in the wrong direction.

Two weeks after he was convicted in a New York courtroom of multiple felony counts, former Republican president Donald Trump still holds a double-digit lead over Democratic incumbent Joe Biden in Iowa.

A new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll shows Trump leads Biden 50% to 32% among likely voters.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who says he has qualified for Iowa’s presidential ballot , earns 9%. Another 2% of likely Iowa voters pick Libertarian presidential candidate Chase Oliver, 3% say they would vote for someone else, 1% would not vote and 3% are not sure.

The results come less than five months out from Election Day and before either candidate formally accepts his party’s nomination at their respective national conventions this summer.

They also come just weeks after Trump was found guilty on 34 felony counts related to hush money payments he made to porn star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election.

But the horse race numbers are largely unchanged from a February Iowa Poll, when Trump led Biden 48% to 33% among likely voters. Another 15% said they would vote for someone else.

Donald Share, a 63-year-old Waterloo resident and poll respondent, said he became a Republican because of Trump and plans to vote for him in November.

“I like (that) he doesn't take any guff from anybody, that he puts America first,” Share said. “You know, we need to take care of our own before we worry about everybody else.”

He said Trump’s criminal conviction has only solidified his resolve in voting for him.

“His convictions on these charges are part of the reason my mind is made up,” Share said. “The more they try to get him out of the picture, the stronger they make him. I, for one, believe that the charges are bogus.”

Among likely voters who name a first-choice candidate, 67% say their minds are made up, while 29% say they can still be persuaded and 3% do not name a first-choice candidate.

Among Trump supporters, 76% say their minds are made up. Another 24% say they could still be persuaded.

Biden’s supporters are slightly more locked in, with 81% saying they are firm in their choice and 19% saying they could be persuaded.

Although the sample sizes are small, the number of supporters of other candidates who are not locked in is significant. Among Kennedy’s supporters, 82% say they could be persuaded. It’s 87% of Oliver’s supporters and 60% of those supporting someone else.

The poll of 806 Iowa adults was conducted June 9-14 by Selzer & Co. of Des Moines, and it has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. The questions of 632 likely voters have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.

Biden approval rating continues ‘consistent decline’

As the candidates move into the general election season, Biden’s approval rating among all Iowans remains low at 28%. Another 67% disapprove of his performance as president, and 5% are not sure.

That’s down a tick from the 29% approval he earned in February 2024 and his 30% showing in March 2023.

Pollster J. Ann Selzer, president of Selzer & Co., said the numbers are important symbolically because they represent a “consistent decline” over time.

“It's not that that's a lot of change,” she said. “It's just that the direction is consistently downward.”

Seventy-seven percent of Democrats approve of Biden’s performance, and 97% of Republicans disapprove.

Independents tilt toward disapproval more than 2 to 1, with 69% disapproving and 24% approving of the president’s performance.

Biden performs best with those 65 years old or older, although a greater share disapproves than approves. Among that group, 46% say they approve and 52% say they disapprove.

That’s in contrast with those younger than 35, who are Biden’s worst demographic group. Just 15% of those younger than 35 approve of Biden’s job performance, while 76% disapprove. That’s slightly worse than February, when 21% approved and 76% disapproved.

Biden’s approval ratings are also low across a range of issues facing the country.

Iowans rate the president highest for his handling of abortion, with 32% saying they approve and another 52% disapproving.

Danielle Goedken, a 23-year-old Cedar Falls resident and poll respondent, said she plans to vote for Biden this fall — reluctantly.

“I kind of picked my lesser of two evils, in a sense,” said Goedken, who has a bachelor’s degree in political science. “It wasn't an easy decision to come to, but I felt that (Biden) was the most closely aligned with my values.”

In particular, she approves of how he is handling issues around abortion.

“President Biden, I think, really does align himself well with the Democratic Party (and) that he has made his position very well known,” Goedken said .

She is among the 68% of Iowans who disapprove of how Biden is handling immigration. Another 24% approve.

“Trump and Biden — despite what Biden had campaigned on —their policies are very similar,” she said.

Biden continued work on “the wall that Trump had started and couldn't complete. Biden has reversed executive orders from Trump regarding immigration, but (Biden) has also recently been creating new executive orders and new policies that are pretty much the same things he tried to get rid of.”

When it comes to inflation, 25% of Iowans say they approve of the job Biden is doing, while 69% disapprove.

And 23% approve of the way he’s handled the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, while 64% disapprove.

Overall, Biden is viewed favorably by 33% of Iowans and unfavorably by 66%.

Among members of his own party, he’s held steady from 87% in February to 86% today.

More: How is the Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll conducted? Let us explain.

Trump maintains favorability numbers but struggles with independent women

Biden performs substantially lower than Trump, who is viewed favorably by 51% and unfavorably by 47%.

The former president has maintained his popularity among Republicans, 86% of whom view him favorably, which is unchanged from February.

Among independents, 48% view him favorably and 50% view him unfavorably. That’s an improvement from February when it was 42% to 53%.

But there are stark differences in the way independent women and independent men view the former president.

Among men who say they are independent, 54% have a favorable view of Trump and 43% have an unfavorable view.

That’s reversed for independent women, just 41% of whom say they have a favorable view of Trump compared with 58% who have an unfavorable view.

‘Double haters’ in Iowa prefer third-party candidates over Biden, Trump

Biden and Trump each have large shares of Iowans who view them unfavorably.

Biden has the highest unfavorable rating of any politician tested in the Iowa Poll at 66%. That includes 50% of Iowans who say they have a very unfavorable view of him.

Trump has the highest unfavorable rating of any Republican politician tested in the poll at 47%. That includes 37% who say they have a very unfavorable view.

Thirteen percent of likely voters say they have an unfavorable view of both candidates. Pundits and analysts have focused on this group of so-called “double haters” who are turned off by both candidates.

According to the poll, Iowa’s double haters tilt toward Biden over Trump, 26% to 16%.

But 26% go for Kennedy, 11% for Oliver and 14% for someone else.

Iowans believe nation is headed in the wrong direction

Iowans overwhelmingly believe the country is headed in the wrong direction.

Seventy-seven percent say things in the country have gotten off on the wrong track, while just 17% say things are headed in the right direction.

That includes 96% of Republicans who believe the country is headed in the wrong direction and 45% of Democrats.

It continues a string of historically low ratings under Biden’s presidency.

In July 2022 , just 10% of Iowans said they thought things were headed in the right direction — the lowest point in the Iowa Poll’s history.  The previous record had been 18% during the Great Recession in 2008.

Since July 2022, no more than 20% have said they believe the country is headed in the right direction.

About the Iowa Poll

The Iowa Poll, conducted June 9-14, 2024, for The Des Moines Register and Mediacom by Selzer & Co. of Des Moines, is based on telephone interviews with 806 Iowans ages 18 or older. Interviewers with Quantel Research contacted households with randomly selected landline and cell phone numbers supplied by Dynata. Interviews were administered in English. Responses were adjusted by age, sex and congressional district to reflect the general population based on recent American Community Survey estimates.

Questions based on the sample of 806 Iowa adults have a maximum margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. This means that if this survey were repeated using the same questions and the same methodology, 19 times out of 20, the findings would not vary from the true population value by more than plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. Results based on smaller samples of respondents — such as by gender or age — have a larger margin of error.
