Yacht crew salary guide

A Nurse on board a superyacht is responsible for providing routine and emergency medical care to owners, guests and crew. The role is typically split between the nurse and Interior Department duties, namely housekeeping and laundry.

A yacht Nurse is a position typically found on superyachts over 50m in size. Generally speaking, the bigger the yacht, the bigger the medical department. For example, some yachts might have a dedicated SOLAS-approved hospital onboard and are equipped with an X-ray machine and a hyperbaric chamber. However, most yachts don’t have the luxury of a dedicated medical professional and positions such as a stewardess-nurse are far more common.

This means that the position often involves assistance from the housekeeping or service teams. Depending on the yacht owners’ health, you may be required to do certain medical duties, but otherwise, the role requires you to be on standby awaiting the need for medical attention.

Working onboard a superyacht as a Nurse requires a complete Nursing License. Usually, there are two Nurses working together onboard and sometimes a Doctor will be present on larger vessels. On average, medical facilities onboard a yacht are equipped with oxygen tanks, defibrillators, specialized medications and intravenous fluids.

What does a yacht Nurse do? | Yacht Nurse Job Description

A Nurse onboard a superyacht is primarily responsible for providing routine and emergency medical care, teaching CPR classes and performing fire and lifeboat drills. They also oversee and maintain the cleanliness of the medical facilities, keep all injury logs, and order and stock all of the medical inventory.

As a yacht Nurse, there may be instances where the yacht is miles away from the shore and a guest develops appendicitis or another condition. In this situation, it is up the Nurse to care for them until other help is available.

The responsibilities of a yacht Nurse include:

Doing physical exams

Assessing, observing, and speaking to patients

Providing emergency medical care

Administering medications and treatments, then monitoring patients for side effects and reactions

Teach CPR classes

Maintaining first-aid supplies and other inventory

Maintaining the cleanliness of the medical facilities

Keeping all injury logs

Regular refresher training and drills

Depending on the size of the yacht, you will also help the Interior Department with housekeeping and service

Soft and hard skills required to be a yacht Nurse

The role of a yacht Nurse is suited to someone who can successfully assess a medical situation by conducting a limited physical examination. As a guest-facing role, yacht Nurses converse regularly with owners and guests. Due to this, confidence and excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

Occasionally, the role may require you to be adaptable and care for an owner or guest with a specific medical condition, so someone who understands specific needs and can provide adequate care to the owner is also important.

The skills of a successful yacht Nurse include:

Knowledge to perform and evaluate diagnostic tests

Experience diagnosing illnesses and prescribing medications

Knowledge of preventive care strategies

Knowledge and experience of emergency medicine and care

Good interpersonal and communication skills

Critical thinking

Empathy

Ability to work independently

Ability to stay calm and collected in stressful situations

Mandatory certificates needed to work on board a yacht

All crew members regardless of position and seniority need to have a valid STCW Basic Safety Training certificate, along with a recognised Seafarers medical certificate, the most popular being the ENG1 which is issued by an MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) professional medic.

Without these two certificates, it is not possible for crew to work on board a yacht and a Recruiter will not be able to assist you in finding work onboard a yacht. For more information about mandatory certificates please visit our Mandatory Certificates Guide .

I'm On A Boat: The Life Of A Yacht Nurse

Amazing Ports of Call

Nursing Duties

Job outlook, are you ready for a job change.

I'm On A Boat: The Life Of A Yacht Nurse

Exotic ports of call with crystal blue waters and white sandy beaches could be your everyday workplace as a yacht nurse. Though the hours can be long and some of the work menial, the travel, adventure, and money can make it all worthwhile.

One yacht nurse from Seattle, Cindy Fadden sat down with Nurse.org to talk about the 3 years she served as a registered nurse on a private mega yacht.

“I sold my car and got rid of all my stuff,” she says. “I knew this was what I wanted to do, even though I had never been on a yacht before.”

She has never regretted the decision that has allowed her to pay off her student loans, develop life-long relationships, and visit some of the most breathtaking spots in the world.

Entering the World of Yacht Nursing

Fadden had been working the night shift at Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami for over a year. The night shift can be rough for any nurse, but one of her coworkers absolutely hated it. In her colleague’s search for a new job, she ran across a listing for a yacht nurse.

“I laughed at her. Yeah, right. That can’t be a real thing,” Fadden told her.

But it actually was. When Fadden did her own research, she realized it couldn’t hurt to explore the opportunity herself. After several applications and interviews, she landed her first yachtie job on a 420-foot vessel. It carried up to 70 crew and 25 high-profile guests.

The yacht was in the middle of a guest cruise when she got the call, so she flew to Tahiti to join her new team.

Those first days were rough.

“I came in the middle of a guest trip, so everyone was so busy and not talking to me. I didn’t know anybody, and I was on my hands and knees cleaning most of the time,” she says.

Not every cruise requires medical care, so most yacht nurses perform double duties as a steward(ess), deckhand, or even engineer. Fadden doubled as a stewardess. “When I signed up, I understood that the majority of my job would be housekeeping,” she says.

In addition to the menial work, she shared a small room with two of her crewmates. It was only equipped with bunk beds and one tiny bathroom. Still, she felt the opportunity was worth it.

“It was a hard adjustment, but I really did learn to love the job,” says Fadden.

One of the best parts of being a yacht nurse is exploring incredible places. “When you get to a port, there are no guests aboard, so you only work 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The rest of the time you have off to explore and tour,” she explains.

In those 3 years, Fadden visited New Zealand, Mozambique, Madagascar, Maldives, Seychelles Island, Thailand, and Indonesia.

“Indonesia was really neat. I feel like most of the places were great,” she says. “You experience things you wouldn’t get to experience on your own. On one charter, we had paddle boats on the yacht so we’d go to the little islands on our days off.”

The long workdays and fun experiences on their nights off resulted in several lifelong friendships. Despite leaving the boat 12 years ago, she still sees some of her former crewmates. “I’ve seen 12 people from the boat since I left. Some have come to stay with me, and others, I have visited.”

How to Become a Yacht Nurse

If you’re a nurse interested in taking your career to the high seas, there are a few things to keep in mind. According to Michelle Thornton, Interior Recruiter at Wilson Halligan Yacht Recruiter company, anyone with a nursing qualification can work on a yacht. However, what will set you apart will be any additional skills that would be useful on the boat, such as food service, party-planning, or even engineering.

To get started, you must first earn your STCW10, which is a Basic Safety Training course to working at sea onboard a vessel. Fadden paid $1,200 for this training. Despite the steep price, it got her the job.

Yacht nurses also need an ENG1 Medical Certificate, which shows that you are physically sound to perform certain duties onboard. This has to be completed by an MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) approved doctor.

yacht rn jobs

If you’re interested in pursuing this career, you should fill out an application at many of the yacht recruiting companies. Interviews will follow along with sending copies of all the required documentation and getting all the required safety courses completed.

Here are a few of the yacht recruitment agencies with current openings for nurses:

  • All Cruise Jobs
  • Wilson Halligan Yacht Recruitment
  • Bluewater Yachting

Fadden was often the only medical professional on board. She taught CPR classes and performed fire and lifeboat drills. She also oversaw and maintained cleanliness of the medical center, kept all injury logs, and ordered/stocked all the medical inventory.

Being the sole medical provider onboard, Fadden also cared for more critical patients. On one charter, a guest developed appendicitis, but they were too far from land to helicopter or boat him out. Even though the yacht was equipped with an X-ray machine and a Hyperbaric chamber, it was still inadequate for a patient who required advanced medical care and surgery.

For two days, Fadden cared for him in the medical room with antibiotics and pain medication before they got close enough to shore to get him help.

Yacht Nurse Salary and Benefits

The salary for yacht nurses can vary greatly. Fadden was hired for $60,000 a year. With room and board covered, she basically had no bills except her excursions on shore for food and drink.

“I was from America, so I had to pay U.S. taxes on my income. But for the first time in my life, I paid all my credit cards off and my student loans. For once, I was on top of my bills, and I had a savings account,” she says.

The starting salary is generally around $3,000 to $4,500 a month depending on yachting experience and the size of the yacht. Most staff are on a rotation of four months on and two months off.

Fadden’s contract allowed her one month off for every five she worked. The rotation is to allow nurses’ to maintain their qualifications and registration, and more often than not, they are paid half-time for those months off, if not full.

Most yachts also provide a 13th-month bonus. Charter yachts also have another huge bonus in the way of tips.

Nurses are more in demand than ever as yachts increase in size. When the yacht travels, it can be hard to get people medical attention if needed. “There, isn’t, however, much progression for nurses onboard, unless they take the career path of a stewardess,” says Thornton.

“Life at sea is tough due to sharing cabins and generally living in small quarters with other people,” Thornton says. “However, this is also the fun of it and having such a social living environment creates friends for life.”

How To Become A Nurse Stewardess On A Private Yacht

As the yachts get bigger, the demand for a vast skill set for Yacht Stewardess Jobs is increasing. One such skill set is that of a Nurse, but what does it take to be a Nurse on-board a Super Yacht and how do you apply? Read on to find out how to become a Nurse Stewardess on a private yacht.

The general response from a variety of our candidates is that friends of friends, internet searches, knowledge of Cruise Ships needing nurses and general word of mouth pointed them in the direction of yachting.

What qualifications do you need to become a Nurse on a yacht?

Predominantly a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, is what yachts are looking for. Additional experience within an Emergency Ward setting and Cardiac Rehabilitation modules are furthermore attractive to prospective employers. In contrast, however, there are some yachts that would be happy with a Paramedic Qualification. Again this depends on the yacht, but imagine being at sea without any speedy responsive emergency services – it is in the yacht’s best interest to cover all bases and have someone prepared and adept in all situations, from giving crew members a band aid to performing CPR.

What requirements are preferred for nurse stewardesses?

You would also need your basic safety courses of Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) and hold a current Medical Fitness Certificate (ENG 1), plus B1B2 Visa if travelling further afield than Europe, these are a must.

Additionally it could aid your job search to have some form of hospitality experience on your CV, since your Nurse role will almost always be paired with being a Stewardess on-board. We are aware as a Nurse you usually need to maintain your department’s level of cleanliness and that you provide excellent customer service to the patients you treat, however please include it in your CV if you have done any cleaning, waitressing, bar tending or food service jobs, as this will add to your hospitality skill set and help you to stand out.

What to expect as a Nurse Stewardess

Working on-board a Yacht is a job like no other, from waking up in a different country each week to staring out at the beautiful ocean on your tea break. As a Nurse/Stewardess you will be expected to maintain the on-board Medical Ward and Nursing Stations. This would include stock take, ordering supplies and recording inventories. Depending on the Yacht Owners health you may be required for certain medical duties; otherwise your role will be on standby awaiting the need for Medical Attention. There may be another Nurse to work with and sometimes even an on-board Doctor on some of the much larger vessels.

As part of the interior team, a large part of your role is to assist in maintaining the succinctly high standards of the interior, predominantly in the housekeeping department. This will involve beds and heads, polishing, cleaning, laundry and generally ensuring the yacht is immaculate at all times. You may also be required to assist with service. Most Nurse / Stewardess positions will be rotational or at least have adequate leave provided to ensure your hours banked can be maintained via freelance work, as part of the Bank Staff within the NHS for example, so that your qualifications can be maintained.

The Benefits of Being a Nurse Stewardess

Although long working hours are required, the benefits are tremendous with salaries often being remarkably higher than shore based positions. Yachting is not for the faint hearted though and working for the world’s richest individuals requires a high level of commitment, consistency and impeccable customer service, plus a sense of adventure, an urge to travel and a desire to do something different than the day to day norm.

On asking a few of our Nurse candidates about their experiences, here is what they had to say…

“I started out as a Registered Nurse specialising in the Emergency Department of a busy metropolitan hospital in Melbourne which I absolutely loved. Unfortunately, the shift work hours didn’t love me so I decided to pursue my other loves, the ocean and travel. I’d known about the yachting profession since my teenage years thanks to family friends who were loosely involved in the industry in Auckland and I had always hoped I’d get a chance to try it for myself. So my first yacht position (Stewardess/Nurse) came along in 2010, over the next 2 1/2 years we travelled from Barcelona to the Caribbean, Panama, Costa Rica, U.S.A and Greenland. I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction really! Following on I’ve worked on yachts between 45-76m, always with the title of ‘stewardess/ships nurse’. Put concisely, yachting is a warped yet exciting mix of long-hours, laughs, dress-ups, long-hours, fun, new experiences, life-long friendships and long hours. Did I mention the long hours?! I couldn’t recommend this industry highly enough to any professional RN’s out there thinking about taking the plunge. The work may be hard at times but the pay offs are limitless.” – Australian candidate

“A patient I treated mentioned how her husband was a Captain on-board Private Yachts and that I should give it a go as an on-board Nurse. From that off chance meeting and swapping of contact details I was informed of the qualifications needed and have not looked back. I am due to start my first Nurse / Stewardess role next week and cannot wait, knowing I am young enough to try something different, pay off my student debt and still have my solid Nursing Degree behind me should I change my mind.” – British candidate

“After almost 10years on-board Cruise Ships I chose to swap to Yachts. The wages are higher and I enjoy the dynamics on-board plus the variety of tasks given. It takes the desire to want to do different jobs from laundry or service to looking after the Crew or Owners when they are sick. Most of the time it is a Stewardess role but when it is Nursing the responsibility is high due to the lack of a complete medical team on-board, you need to be confident in your ability as a Nurse.” – Austrian candidate

“A lot of my friends applied to be Nurses in the Middle East and I wanted to do something different. I used Google and came across Yacht Nurse’s, it all started from there. Working on a Billionaire’s Super Yacht is challenging but rewarding, you have to be tough yet caring. I went through a lot of rejections and hardships before gaining a Super Yacht position but I never gave up. For many it is a dream job. If I can do it, why can’t you?” – Filipina candidate

As you can see candidates come from all over the world and we try to help as many as possible here at wilsonhalligan. No day is the same on-board, you will make great friends, have wonderful experiences and perhaps find yourself hooked on a new and exciting career at sea.

An Ocean-Lover’s Dream: Working as a Nurse at Sea

Cruise ship nurse, yacht nurse, responsibilities of nurses working on boats and ships, qualifications of a nurse at sea, how to become a nurse at sea.

An Ocean-Lover’s Dream: Working as a Nurse at Sea

For nurses who love to travel, a nursing job on a cruise ship or yacht may be the perfect job. Working with a typically small medical staff, nurses often have the opportunity to provide one-on-one medical care for the guests or team members on board the ship.

Many cruise lines, such as Princess Cruises , have facilities ranging from a walk-in clinic for non-urgent matters to a fully-equipped medical facility to care for emergent or trauma injuries that might occur on the ship. Nurses who wish to work for Princess Cruises must have at least 3 years’ experience in either emergency or acute care settings; ‘acute care' typically refers to a hospital setting as opposed to an outpatient or urgent-care facility. Nurses must also possess certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and have an active RN license. Qualified nurses who speak multiple languages such as Mandarin or Japanese are in high demand on cruise lines.

On the Royal Caribbean cruise line, nurses are required to have at least 3 years’ experience in an emergency or intensive care unit (ICU) setting. An active nursing license in any state is also required as well as current ACLS and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications. Smaller cruise lines, such as Viking River Cruises , require only 2 years of nursing experience, yet hospitality and yachting experience is valued for the position. A work Visa will also be required when working as a nurse outside of the U.S.

Yacht nursing is a lesser-known specialty that you may not be aware of but may be pleased to know exists. These nurses can travel almost anywhere, from the South Pacific to Hawaii, to the Caribbean. Because yachts are smaller and have less staff than cruise ships, in addition to providing medical care yacht nurses may also be asked to assist with other tasks such as service and maintenance. Because medical care and monitoring are not needed the whole time, assisting the other crew is another job duty. Moreover, in case of evacuation, a yacht nurse may need to assist with getting passengers to lifeboats or other vessels.

Those interested in yacht nursing should remember that they are considered staff, i.e. part of the crew. This means they may need to share small living quarters with other crew members and work beyond what is considered " nursing duties ". However, the ability to travel, experience new places, and meet new people is enough to attract nurses into the field of yacht nursing.

Both cruise ship and yacht nurses perform basic first aid skills, administer medications, and occasionally handle emergency medical care. They must be able to assess situations and triage, and also educate passengers on any medical issues or concerns. Occasionally, medical emergencies arise and it's difficult for rescue boats or helicopters to arrive quickly, so the nurse must be able to manage a patient until help arrives.

The working life of a nurse onboard a yacht or cruise ship is very different than most healthcare settings. Shifts can be anywhere from 4-12 hours along with the expectation of taking calls for emergencies after hours. The medical personnel, although typically considered professional staff, are not "allowed" to mingle or fraternize with the guests onboard the ship. Most cruise lines offer nurses their own cabin and meals as part of the position.

Nurses who routinely work assignments on yachts and cruise lines find the work fun and adventurous. While this day-on-stay-on work may not be for all nurses, those with wanderlust and experience in emergency nursing or ICU nursing may find this an exciting career path.

We’ve addressed some cruise line-specific qualifications above, but generally speaking, you’ll need to have most of the following regardless of the nurse at sea position you’re applying to:

  • Registered Nurse (RN) Licensure : Obtaining licensure as a registered nurse is essential. This typically requires completing an accredited nursing program and passing the NCLEX-RN exam .
  • Clinical Experience : Prior experience in clinical settings, such as hospitals or healthcare facilities, is highly beneficial. It helps in developing critical skills and familiarity with medical procedures.
  • Specialized Training : Additional certifications or training in areas relevant to maritime healthcare can be advantageous. Courses in emergency medicine, trauma care, and maritime medicine enhance readiness for the challenges of providing healthcare at sea.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification : These certifications are often required and demonstrate proficiency in managing cardiac emergencies, which are crucial skills in any healthcare setting.
  • Emergency Response Training : Familiarity with emergency response protocols and procedures is essential for nurses at sea. This includes training in managing medical emergencies in remote or maritime environments.
  • Good Physical Health and Stamina : Working at sea can be physically demanding. Nurses should be in good health and capable of handling the rigors of maritime work, including long hours and potentially rough sea conditions.
  • Excellent Communication Skills : Effective communication is vital when working in a maritime setting where collaboration with crew members and other healthcare professionals is necessary. Nurses must be able to convey information clearly and confidently. As mentioned, if traveling outside of the US, you’ll want to brush up on your Spanish or French if traveling to the Caribbean, or any other language that may apply in the area you’re serving in.

If you meet the basic requirements of a nurse at sea and you’re ready to start applying, you’ll need to do the following.

Seek Specialized Training: Pursuing additional training or certifications in maritime healthcare is essential for nurses aspiring to work at sea. Courses in emergency medicine, trauma care, or maritime medicine provide valuable knowledge and skills necessary to address the unique challenges encountered in maritime environments. These certifications not only enhance your qualifications but also increase your readiness to handle medical emergencies, adapt to remote settings, and collaborate effectively with diverse teams aboard ships or vessels.

Apply for Positions: To secure a position as a nurse at sea, it’s crucial to actively seek job openings with maritime companies, cruise lines, research vessels, or government agencies. Regularly checking online job boards, company websites, and industry-specific platforms can help you identify relevant opportunities. Networking within the maritime industry, attending maritime conferences, or joining professional associations can also provide valuable connections and insights into available positions. By proactively pursuing these avenues and showcasing your qualifications, you increase your chances of landing a fulfilling role in maritime nursing.

Prepare for Interviews: Preparation is key when it comes to interviews for nursing positions at sea. Be ready to discuss your nursing experience, highlighting any relevant clinical expertise and specialized training you’ve undergone. Emphasize your ability to adapt to the unique challenges of working in a maritime environment, such as managing medical emergencies in remote locations or providing care amidst sea-related hazards. Showcase your communication skills, teamwork abilities, and commitment to maintaining high standards of patient care. By demonstrating your readiness and enthusiasm for the role during interviews, you can leave a positive impression on potential employers and increase your likelihood of success.

Job of Moscow

Our father among the saints Job ( + 1607) was the first Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. He is commemorated by the Church on June 19 and April 5 .

  • 1 Early life
  • 3 Patriarchate
  • 6 External link

St Job was born into the family of pious tradesmen in Staritsa near Tver in the 1530s. His baptismal name was John. As a teenager, John knew most of the biblical texts by heart and strove to become a monk . His father, however, insisted on his marriage . Once, John asked his father's permission to see his confessor in the Uspensky Monastery in their native town of Staritsa (Tver Oblast). Upon his arrival, John immediately took monastic vows and assumed the name of Job. He spent fifteen years in the cloister and finally became its abbot in 1566 with the help of Ivan the Terrible , who had made Staritsa his residence in times of the Oprichnina (secret police).

In 1571, Job was transferred to Moscow and appointed abbot of the Simonov Monastery . In 1575, he became the abbot of the Novospassky Monastery. In 1581, Job was appointed bishop of Kolomna.

Known as a person of mediocre mental abilities, he, nevertheless, managed to draw attention of Boris Godunov by his talent for reading the longest of prayers by heart in a very expressive manner. During the reign of Feodor I (whose government was controlled by Boris Godunov), Job was appointed archbishop of Rostov and Metropolitan of Moscow and All Russia in 1587.

Realizing the necessity of strengthening the ecclesiastic authority in Russia , Godunov managed to persuade the Patriarch of Constantinople Jeremias II to establish a patriarchate in Russia. On January 26 , 1589, Job was elected the first Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. He exercised all his influence and played a major part in Boris Godunov's ascending to the Russian throne.

Patriarchate

Job did not approve, however, Godunov's proposal to open a university in Moscow with foreign professors because he believed their influence and non- Orthodox faith would cause "heterodoxy" and endanger the authority of the Russian Church. Under Job's supervision, the Russians corrected books for divine service and prepared them for publishing.

He assisted in glorification of some of the Russian saints , ordering the celebration of the memory of Basil Fool for Christ in 1588, as well as that of Joseph Volotsky and others. Job also favored the construction of new cathedrals and monasteries and Christian missionary activities in the recently conquered Astrakhan Khanate and Siberia. After the mysterious death of tsarevich Dmitry Ivanovich in 1591, Jove accepted the noncriminal version of his demise, supporting Boris Godunov every step of the way.

After the invasion of False Dmitriy I and sudden death of Boris Godunov on June 1 , 1605, there was an uprising in Moscow.

Job was known as a harsh critic of False Dmitriy I, and he tried to persuade the people of Moscow to remain loyal to the deceased tsar. The armed supporters of the impostor burst into the Cathedral of the Dormition, and a boyar named P.F. Basmanov declared Job a traitor. Job was sent into exile to his monastery in Staritsa, where he went completely blind and finally died a very sick man in 1607.

In 1652, Job's relics were transferred to the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Moscow Kremlin, where they remain to this day. Patriarch Job was glorified as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1989.
