Peter Norlin´s Masterpiece

On this page you may find all information about my latest project, the new build of the  Peter Norlin classic, the OMEGA 42 sailboat. I started to think about this boat back on 2018 when I first visited a small Northern German shipyard, Müritz Bootsservice , where the original hull mould by Swedish yard Vindö is located and the guys reissue the legendary sailboat.  Here´s a great 6-page review and sailing test by German yachting magazine “SEGELN” – Klick here

With the Omega 42 I return to the classy sailing style that my first boat, the King´s Cruiser 33 OLIVIA, was already giving off so nicely. After I decided not to go for the First 36, this boat, I am sure, will best connect my demand for a family cruiser and my drive to sail quickly.

omega sailboats

The Omega 42 was designed in 1979 by legendary Swedish designer Peter Norlin . At the height of the IOR-boats , he made a boat free from all rules. The Omega 42 at her time was resumed to be one of the quickest serial production boats available at that time. Norlin gave her a large ballast-displacement-ratio, a tall rigging and low draft: Perfect for “catching the wind” up high between the thousands of islands of the Swedish Archipelago.

From 1979 to 1998 some 160 units have been built in total. Mine will be hull #2 by of the Omega 42 evo -boats shipyard Mueritz Bootsservice , hull #162 in total.

omega sailboats

The reasons for me to go for the Omega 42 in the end are multiple and very personal. As for every decision for a boat (or against another one), this comes mostly from the heart and the belly. Rational thinking is widely disenganged when it comes to boats, but I will try to map out the main drivers in my decision to not buy a modern sailboat but to invest in reviving an “old” classic ship:

  • Beauty: The Omega 42 is well known to be one of the most beautiful yachts ever designed. There are classics and there are immortals. It is like with cars: There are many, many nice classic cars but there are much less immortals. Like the Mercedes 300 SL or the Jaguar E-Type. The Omega 42 is among those, a boat that needs no explanation. There are very few boats as beautifully designed as this marvel.
  • Size: As I am sailing with my family, my boys and friends, I am seeking a boat size that can fit this demands. After 2 years of sailing the First 27 SE with my family , I want to go for a “real” cruiser: A proper bathroom, a proper galley, proper berths and so on. 42 feet is a pretty huge length, but with only 3.10 meters width (and far less in the back and bow) the interior volume is more comparable to a35-footer. I find this is sufficient for my demands, but far more than micro-cruising.
  • Individuality: The Omega 42 will be built as a one-off in a semi-custom process. In this, I can decide what to go for and which things I don´t want to have on board. There is no chance whatsoever to have this freedom of choices in a serial production boat. My aim is a “no frills”-yacht as easy as possible.

How much the Omega 42 is enchanting people, you can read in this 8-page article from German sailing magazine “SEGELN”, in which this boat also made it to the front page cover : Klick here for PDF

omega sailboats

The original Omega 42 as conceived by Peter Norlin was a boat of the Seventies. Her interior layout was quickly outdated, mostly the arrangement of the head in the front and as such an MK 2-version was released. This boat came with a proper bathroom at starboard side right next to the entryway moving the WC aft. The German-built Omega 42, let´s call it the Omega 42 evo , adheres to this layout.

In this, some more, mostly hidden, improvements, had been made: The hull is laminated with foam core and will thus be lighter as the original boat, a newly designed rigging by Seldén with 2 spreaders eliminates the old weak spot of the construction.

Omega 42 evo: The boat´s data

Gathering the data of Norlin´s masterpiece, you should be aware that these are the original data of the boat. Especially rigging and weight of the Omega 42 evo made in Germany will deviate to a certain point and as soon as my boat is finished or the data are available I will put in the corrected numbers:

Length over all (Loa)                      41.99 ft . / 12.80 metres

Beam                                                 10.17 ft / 3.10 metres

Draft                                                  5.48 / 1.67 metres

P (max hoist mainsail)                  50.85 / 15.50 metres

This boat has a construction displacement of 7.4 tons, although most of serial boats floated around 8 tons. The Omega 42 evo will have some 7.5 tons again. Her a very stable weight/ballast ratio of nearly 51 % makes for an exceptionally a strong righting moment and allows her to carry her maximum sails area of some 73 square meters even in a stronger breeze. The ballast weight is 3.750 kilograms in a lead fin keel that is very low drafted, allowing this big boats to sail comfortably even in shallow waters.

omega sailboats

Sailplan. The Omega 42 has been conceived from the start as a single-handed sailing capable yacht. In this, Norlin envisioned the boat with a self-tacking jib and a full-battened pin-head mainsail. Some later configurations added an overlapping Genoa to have more power in low-wind situations. I am not sure as of now wether I go for the original sailplan or fit a Genoa right away.

As the original boat featured a Spinnaker, there is no bow sprit intended and it would kill the design to fit one. Nevertheless, I need a solution to sail Code 0 and Gennaker on the Omega 42 in lighter wind conditions, which is a premise to have the self-tacking jib. We will see. For now, here are the sails-data of the original Omega 42 boat:

Mainsail                             417 sq.ft. / 39 sq.metres

Jib                                        364 sq.ft. / 34 sq.meters

That makes it to a combined total max. upwind sail area of 781 sq.ft. / 73 sq.metres

SA/D ratio                           19.5

Yardstick Handicap          94

As classy as she is, I will most likely opt against laminate sails for the Omega 42 evo. First talks with Quantum sails have been very fruitful and I think I will decide to choose Dacron as the prime sail cloth, but go for a very elaborate tri-radial cut with an emphasize on form. I am sure this is the best way to pay homage to the Norlin-classic.

omega sailboats

Engine. For the engine part many, many of you guys will surely think of fitting a “green” electric engine or alternative technology. I must say that I am for the most part done with electric propulsion on sailboats . At first, after 2 years sailing an all-electric boat I can say that this technology from my personal point of view is not safe and reliable enough to go offshore. Blue screen, error-codes and simply no chance to being repaired. Evereything is encapsulated and all is digital. The range of the batteries is more than limited.

In this I will surely fit the good old reliable and stable Diesel. For the Omega, Diesel engines from 25 to 24 horsepower have been fitted over the decades. I will opt for the Volvo-Penta D1-30 powerhouse to be mounted into my boat. Reliable technology, high quality and a great after sales network all around the world.

omega sailboats

Building Quality & Construction:  The hulls #001 and #002 (my boat) had been laminated by a Swedish boatbuilding manufacture in Dingle back in 2017. The hulls got transported by truck to Mueritz Bootsservice in Germany where they had been finished. Mueritz Bootsservice owns the mould for hull, deck and some GRP parts (floor of the bathroom for example) and starting with hull #003 those will be made in Germany. Mueritz Bootsservice owns the muld: Out of this single mould each and every Omega 42 was “born”.

The hull is laminated thoroughly in hand lay-up with synthatic rigid-foam core. The construction, thickness and layup of the garments is 1:1 Peter Norlin´s  concept. An exemption is the base of the keel-stepped mast which turned out to be a bit weak for the completely new constructed Seldén rigging . A more rigid and safe base has been conceived and retrofitted to hull #001, in #002 it is installed from the start.

The boat does not need an inner and outer hull as the monolithic design and layup combinded with a few stringers and the bulkheads give more than enough stiffness to the construction.

In the course of the project during its progress, I will complete this dedicated site, especially the sections on:

Omega 42 Charisma, SWE 301

Start: 2000

Case story: The dream-come-true project started the moment I realized that a boat builder was going to start building the classical yacht Omega 42 again. It was introduced in the 1970's, by the legendary yacht designer Peter Norlin.

I convinced the builder to re-think, and forced them to sell me the first one under the condition that I could re-design the interior into a modern design version, instead of the classical dark brown 1970 standard-ish format. They agreed eventually...

A new bright and white interior

The standard boat interior design has been based on "brown wood only" for too long. For natural reasons of course. But it was certainly about time to look at it from a new perspective – what is the purpose, what do we want from our life in a boat after a Millennium, what are we in fact doing in there when sailing and when not sailing, how much time do we spend indoor, what do we really need and what old-school stuff and habits can we exchange for new ones?

The hull was totally empty when I stepped into it the first time. My imagination went wild. I talked to Peter Norlin, I discussed with the boat builders, I doodled tons of drawings. I was curious about how a professional industry designer, not coming from the traditional boating industry, would approach such a golden opportunity. I met with renown designer Björn Dahlström and his team. After an hour together with them and their 3D CAM/CAD modelling computers, I realised that the point of no return was already behind me. I swallowed at least twice and then we made a deal to team up and challenge the boat interior status quo. Here is what our ideas and thoughts, and their talents, turned into:

omega sailboats

After comprehensive measuring of all angles, curves and proportions (since there was no reliable drawings available) the 3D software did its work. The idea was to open up, get the light in, re-think the purposes of a sailing life, introduce new materials and plan for the idea that scaling down on stuff onboard would bring joy to the overall experience and freedom.

omega sailboats

Another ambition evolved from a sailing project and food event we were dealing with at the time – Food Onboard with the Chef Of The Year – meaning that designing a galley, we should strive for making more room for cooking and less room for navigation. It felt logical as plotters and smartphones made navigation work easier outside by the tiller. Cooking and enjoying nice meals together should move up on the list of sailing lifestyle priorities in my mind. The meals are an as important part of sailing, as the sailing itself nowadays.

omega sailboats

I was in heaven. Suddenly I found myself discussing new bold ideas with legends like Peter Norlin and Mange Olsson, with extremely talented boat builders, professional chefs and awarded industry designers. I also had the opportunity to experience how the ideas materialize with the help of rocket science CAD/CAM-modulation software at Björn Dahlström Design Studio.

omega sailboats

One year later...this is the final result by the boat builders: White surfaces and lots of light, no doors between cabins (how private is it anyway?), a see-through ladder, more "space" and less storage room (how much stuff do you need anyway?) and a generous galley and "dining room" for great cooking opportunities and socializing moments.

Press event in Stockholm, May 2001

To celebrate the re-birth of a new classical yacht, we arranged an event for media and other guests. We named the new design version "Omega 42 Charisma" and on May 8th the press release and invitation was sent out. Only a few days later we gathered on the pier of Riddarholmen in Stockholm city center, with the waters of Riddarfjärden and the City Hall – the Nobel Dinner palace – as our backdrop. It was truly a sunny day. Read or download the Press Release.

Legendary yacht designer Peter Norlin and other members of the team guided the media and sailed with them under the sun. The team in front of the sculpture "Solbåten" (the Sun Boat): Boat builders Niklas Lindell and Håkan Benghtsson, Chef of the Year 1999 Karl Ljung, yacht designer Peter Norlin and industry designer Björn Dahlström.

bertoft_omega42_logo.png

While at it... we introduced a redesigned Omega 42 logo.

A sleek yacht and classical archipelago cruiser

The Omega 42 was the undisputed queen of yachts in Sweden back in the 1970-ies. A 42-footer was considered a big yacht at the time and the sleek lines were loved by the owners and admired by other sailors. It had some constructions flaws being a single layer hull and slightly to weak construction for its size back then. Read the full story (in Swedish) on the Omega 42 Sällskapet website

The production went down eventually, but luckily the shipyard Lidköpings Båtsnickeri bought the rights to start again in 2000. They initiated a tight collaboration with the Omega 42 yacht designer Peter Norlin and the multi-experienced skipper and sail racing icon Mange Olsson, and a new stronger hull and and rigg construction was designed.

S/Y Johanna was the first in a new series of Omega 42s. The white, open interior created lots of buzz at the boat expos we participated in that summer of 2001. Young visitors entering the boat loved the design. But the conservative boat market was not yet ready for anything else but a classical brown wooden interior and the good old conservative solutions.

The Omega 42 Charisma version became a one-off. Our ideas in 2001 were 10-20 years too early for the market. But, in 2015 my phone started ringing again, people from Germany, Norway, Denmark, Luxembourg and France had spotted the "le classic beautyfyl lady with the white charismatic interieur". She was not mine when they called, my once in a lifetime experience and treasure was sold and owned by other sailors.

We caught the new exterior on video for the press...

The Omega 42 Charisma became a one-off. But hey...rumours told me some years ago that a shipyard in Germany was planning for a new production again. Maybe time has catched up and they will pick up some of our design ideas?

Unusual media coverage

We did get some, but very slim, coverage from the boat magazines in Sweden. They were for some reason hard to get at the time. But the largest interior design magazine was quite exited. They were non-sailors and curios for other reasons. Is that ironic or what? Anyway, they came and enjoyed a good Swedish fika, loved the ideas, the materials, the details, the light and the open space and published a seven page article about the new ideas and designs...

The interior design magazine Sköna Hem covered the story on seven pages. Read the article and translated English version here.

Swedish daily news papers showed enthusiasm about the re-borned classic and its bold interior design ideas.

Charter sailing during 2001-2003

Having a yacht measuring 42 feet and an archipelago offering 40.000 islands close at hand, opens up opportunities for hosting guests on sailing adventures. So, a side business was registered and officially launched. Smaller groups were invited.

We had great days out on the water and the journeys were much appreciated. Making people happy by sailing in the Stockholm archipelago is an easy fix. Valuable team building experiences within the groups comes as a bonus. Here are a few memory lane references:

Happy sailing, happy cooking... happy drinking?

Serving catered food was as joyful as the sailing in itself. We served home made sandwiches along the ride and we stopped at random islands for prepared picnics and barbeques. We used good recipes and trix from our Food Onboard project.   What about drinks, one might ask? For a skipper on duty it is of course a no-no. But serving the guests some chilled white wine for lunch or sharing a drink after the boat is tied up in a marina should not be a big deal. Well, in Sweden it is.

Here is a story I laugh about today: To serve alcohol on a charter event requires a permit. Fine with me. However, I had to be at least a certified "bartender" to just be able to apply for such a permit.

So I attended a bar tender admin education and 1500 Euros later I did complete the exam. But did the Swedish Authorities approve my application? Nope. Instead they unveiled the requirements I would need to fulfil onboard, in order to be allowed serve food and alcohol: A separate fridge for the guest's food, a separat dish washing area, active ventilation and a separate bathroom for staff etc. Thanks mate:-)

But I was also informed that if the sailing was not a public event but with a "closed group", and if the members of the group brought their own alcohol, I would not need a permit. Nor a bar tender certificate.

Hahaha... looking back I can not stop laughing about how insanely bureaucratic we are in this country. Or about how naive I was. But on the other hand I am still a certified bartender...

Bye bye...always a sad moment to leave the guests after a great day onboard.

Topaz & Topper Sailboats

Topaz by Topper

Build & design.

Topaz sailboats are the result of  Topper Internationals unique understanding of manufacturing plastic that began over 30 years ago with the production of the original Topper sailboat.   This unparalleled expertise in this field has meant that the very latest rapid advances in material technology have been harnessed to produce a  uniquely strong, lightweight, stiff and durable hull.

omega sailboats

All Topaz sailboats are designed with 4 basic concepts in mind: speed, durability, versatility and quality.

  • Roto-molded in tri-lam polyethylene
  • Speed- Fast planning stable hulls that are spacious and comfortable
  • Durability – Utra-tough, maintenance free, tri-lam construction, ensuring toughness and strength without increasing hull weight
  • Versatility – Delivers versatility without compromise, available with multiple rig options providing a variety of sailing choices
  • Quality – Built to the highest specification with both materials and fittings

The end result is boat range that is geared to bringing fast, exciting sailboats within everyone’s reach.

Unique Hull Construction

The success behind the Topaz Range is in the remarkable sophistication and ruggedness of the manufacturing process.  The entire Topaz Range is rota-molded of polyethylene with incredible precision producing a uniquely strong, lightweight, stiff and durable hull. Using a patented TRILAM 3-ply sandwich construction process, the Topaz hull ensures toughness without increasing hull weight –  Read more …

Three layer System:

  • Light weight extra strength honeycomb core
  • Surrounded by a hard seal inner skin
  • Exceptionally strong, high quality Metalicene outer skin provides strongest possible attachment for fittings via brass inserts molded into the hull

Built-In Buoyancy

Masses of buoyancy are built into the ultra stiff hull – vital for responsive performance. This precision molded TRILAM process is unique to the Topaz and guarantees that no other rota-molded sailboat rivals The Topaz in terms of strength, rigidity and durability. The result is an amazing hull that is:

  • Lightweight
  • Low maintenance
  • Covered by a 3-year hull warranty

Simple Rigging & Sail Plans

Simplicity is key with Topaz sailboats.  All the Topaz Sailboats are easily rigged and arrive with all lines labeled and all spars are made from anodized aluminum material.

All boats have a jib option to cater to single and double handed sailing.

Most models share the same 2-part free standing mast and boom with the ARGO, OMEGA, and Cat having a 1-piece stayed rig.

Unique to the Topaz Sailing System Race X, ARGO, and OMEGA is a single-line launch spinnaker system which launches/retrieves the spinnaker pole and spinnaker simultaneously using use one single line.

The TAZ and Topaz Sailing System boats also come complete with a shock absorbent hull plate as standard.  The hull plate system protects the hull and dagger board should you run aground.  The rudder system for all boats will also kick-up to protect the blade in the event of impact.

Using a standard design, across the entire Taz and Sailing Systems Range, the boats are equipped with a polyethylene molded dagger board and rudder blades. Unique to the Topaz Range is a simple rope less rudder stock system for easy launching. The ARGO, OMEGA, and Catamarans use a epoxy blade.

All boats come equipped with a main sheet ratchet block as standard and the hardware is either Ronstadt, Holt or Allen, depending on usage requirements.  In addition all boats come with hiking straps, carry handles,  inspection hatches and righting lines  as standard.

All load bearing fittings are attached to the hull with brass inserts that are  molded into the boat during the manufacturing process.

The mast gate system is a simple yet unique design allowing the mast to be easily stepped by a solo sailor. All boats have the ability to have the mast stepped single highhandedly.

The New Pete Rose Documentary Is the Documentary Pete Rose Deserves

Charlie Hustle is a great series that gives the octogenarian ex-ballplayer time to shine. He doesn’t.

a man wearing a white helmet

“You do what you gotta do,” Pete told me about his long-distance family situation. Hand to God, the guy didn’t even know his kids’ pet’s names.

Eighty-three years old now, Rose is still MLB ’s career leader in a few categories, including hits—4,256. He is still the Hit King, and being the Hit King is still Pete’s alpha and omega. Finally—and, yeah, tragically—Pete Rose is still ineligible for election to Baseball’s Hall of Fame.

Charlie Hustle and the Matter of Pete Rose , HBO’s new four-part sports doc , is worth your time, especially if you love baseball history as I do. It does not plead Rose’s case, and in truth, no case can be made. The rule he violated is baseball’s most sacrosanct and has been since eight of Chicago’s Black Sox were banned for life from the majors for taking bribes to tank the 1919 World Series. Rule 21, Section D, Number 2: A player or official involved in a game who bets on that game “shall be declared permanently ineligible.”

original caption rose got his revenge on the shea stadium fans by homering with one out in the 12th inning to give the reds a 2 1 victory over the mets and square their national league championship series at two games apiece rose had been the object of abuse 108 following an altercation with mets shortstop bud harrelson

Pete Rose bet on the Cincinnati Reds while he was a player and manager. He bet on them scores of times, always to win, and left a telephone trail that made it an open-and-shut case despite Rose’s years of lying and denying ever violating Rule 21. He got railroaded in the sense that he was never found guilty in a court of law; one man, MLB’s commissioner, was his judge and jury and banned him for life in 1989. He finally confessed the truth but only to juice his 2004 autobiography, following up by peddling signed balls inscribed with “I’m sorry I bet on baseball—Pete Rose.”

In lieu of presenting character witnesses in any traditional sense, Charlie Hustle features a parade of Rose’s off-field crew of steroid-crazed enablers, drug dealers, and bookmakers, including a rat who tried to blackmail Rose. Pete wound up doing a five-month bit at USP Marion for income-tax fraud. He did not come out of jail a changed man, and age has only hardened him. He’s as bilious as a reflux burp and as likable as lice.

With his white-on-white Hit King cap clamped to his pelt and an HK monogram sewn on his shirt’s collar, a sneering, scowling, sad clown, Rose comes off cruel, bitter, and deeply, profoundly hurt. He’s on camera in close-up for most of each episode, profane, outraged by how it all turned out, and accountable for nothing.

Over and over in Charlie Hustle , Pete Rose reveals who hurt him: Harry Rose, his dad, a bank clerk and local sports legend who played semipro football into his forties and was determined to sire a pro athlete.

“People always told me, ‘If you’re half the man your dad was, you’ll be a helluva man,’” Rose says 13 minutes into the first episode. Speaking of the play that first earned him national notoriety—Rose plated the winning run in 1970’s All-Star Game by trucking a rookie catcher, dislocating and breaking the catcher’s shoulder—Pete says, “If my father’d seen me come in like a little sissy, he woulda kicked the hell outta me. He woulda whipped my ass.”

Harry made Pete into a switch-hitter at age ten and taught him that winning is everything and that losing is hurt and humiliation. Harry died in late 1970, when Pete was 29 and Pete’s first son, Pete Rose Jr., was a year old. Pete didn’t turn Junior into a switch-hitter; he made him a Reds batboy instead, and a baseball lifer. Junior appears for a couple minutes in one Charlie Hustle episode, a chubby, wistful 54-year-old kid in a White Sox hoodie. Junior toiled for 13 seasons in the minors and came to bat in the bigs 14 times when he was 27 years old. He has two career MLB hits.

“He got over 2,000 hits in the minors,” Pete Sr. snarls. “He got fucked because of me.”

Actually, Junior is officially credited with 1,879 hits over his 21 seasons in the sticks, including a few he picked up along the way in Mexican leagues.

“I’m a Rose,” says Junior, with no evident irony or regret. “My idol is number 14.” That’s the number—the only number—his big-league dad wore.

Charlie Hustle barely mentions the monstrous human centipede that MLB, the NFL, and the NBA have now assembled with online bookmakers to drain every last drop of blood money from fans dumb enough to flush their cash down a crapper jammed with an estimated $25 billion in the U.S. this year alone.

Some fraction of those bettors—an estimated 20 million Americans have gambling problems now— will grow addicted to the action. And week after week, all the major American pro sports are now suspending an increasing number players for gambling on games. Rule 21 isn’t going anywhere—and number 14 is never going to be on a plaque in Cooperstown. Pete Rose is a loser, a truth that can’t be covered by a ball cap.

Incredible Footage of Whale 'Toppling' Boat in New England Is Legitimately Almost Unbelievable

The first time I ever went on a whale-watching expedition, I was amazed by how close the boats were able to get us to the feeding humpbacks. I had bought tickets for the trip expecting to see a few spouts and fins through a pair of binoculars, but no, they got right up close to the giant, breaching animals. I felt whale snot sprayed on my face.

Yet it’s good to remember that the large, whale-watching boats of the tourist trade are piloted by professionals who know exactly how to mange these experiences safely. For the private person, especially on a smaller boat, it does not pay to be in the path of a feeding whale, as these boaters recently discovered off the coast of New Hampshire.

Wild video shows a whale rising out of the water in New Hampshire and smashing a boat https://t.co/FwvmhRZLTx pic.twitter.com/Ptj8NOauU2 — philip lewis (@Phil_Lewis_) July 23, 2024

Yesterday, a pair of boaters found themselves in literally deep water after a breaching whale toppled their boat and dumped them both into the ocean. Incredibly, this footage was captured by two teenagers who were on a similarly tiny craft only a few yards away. The video is pretty incredible—as is the fact that no one was injured after this shocking incident.

Related: Whale Feeding in the Water Nearly Swallows Kayaker in Harrowing Video

In the clip, you can see a breaching whale tip over a nearby boat, dumping two passengers into the water in Portsmouth Harbor.

An Accidental Collision

For Colin and Wyatt Yager, a simple fishing trip turned into a rescue mission after the nearby boat capsized. They said one man managed to jump overboard as the whale collided with the craft but that the other man was pushed under the boat as it came down.

Thankfully, no one was seriously injured.

One of the fishermen from the boat, Ryland Kenney, said that they had seen the whale feeding and were attempting to keep their distance, but apparently hadn’t gone far enough away.

“He went under, he disappeared for a few minutes, and then the next thing we know, he just popped right up on our transom,” he told a local news station .

Though the Coast Guard reported the incident to the appropriate wildlife authorities, it is not thought that the whale itself was injured by this collision. In fact, it’s possible that the giant creature never even noticed that the boat was there.

“If you look at the video really carefully, you can see that the whale has its mouth open,” Sara Morris of the University of New Hampshire Shoals Marine Laboratory told the press . “It looks like it’s lunge feeding and actually trying to catch fish.”

Yes, You Can Be Swallowed By a Whale

Though orcas attacking yachts have been much in the news lately, this incident appears to be entirely accidental, and it’s not the first of its kind, either. Many whales swim with their mouths opening when filter feeding or trying to catch fish, as this whale was doing. A pair of kayakers in California were capsized by a feeding humpback in 2020, and a diver in Cape Cod found himself actually inside the mouth of a filter feeding humpback in 2021 (he, too, survived to tell the tale).

From the whale’s perspective, these incidents are the equivalent of stepping on an anthill or swallowing a fly. They don’t mean to do it, but it can cause quite the commotion when they do.
