Hire a Boat in Tenerife

Named the “Fortune Islands”, the Canary Islands are fantastic mountains, a picturesque landscape of volcanoes, dense green forests, desert areas, interesting ports, and hospitable people. The largest island of the Canary Archipelago — Tenerife — fascinates with its variety of fauna and flora. The sun shines here for more than 300 days a year, and the wind is always favorable. A yacht charter is an event without which a holiday in Tenerife would not be complete. It guarantees an unforgettable adventure and priceless memories.

Rent Boat Tenerife provides hourly rental services for boats from 2 to 25 people and yachts for groups from 25 to 150 people. You can rent a boat with a captain and/or crew. Most of the routes are boat trips along the coast. The minimum order is 3 hours. But at the client’s request, longer walks to neighboring islands are also possible, which is ordered separately in each case.

Popular boat rental locations in Tenerife

  • Costa Adeje is a coast that stretches from San Eugenio to Playa Paraiso. It consists of many picturesque beaches. A beautiful promenade stretches along most of the coastline. It is in the south of Tenerife that the port of Puerto Colon, popular among water sports enthusiasts, is located. Here you can rent boats for fishing, whale watching and dolphin watching.
  • Los Gigantes is a famous tourist resort consisting of three interconnected settlements in the west of Tenerife: Varadero, Playa de la Arena, and Puerto Santiago. This is one of the most beautiful places in Tenerife. The majestic rocks, which can be seen from a small but cozy bay, are breathtaking.
  • Las Galletas is a very beautiful port town with clean pebble beaches. In the morning you can buy freshly caught fish here.
  • Playa de las Américas is the perfect place to rent a boat in Tenerife for evening walks and romantic dinners. The Avenida de Las Americas promenade is visible during the day as a series of colorful pubs with live music, palm trees, charming illuminations, and fountains. At night, it turns into a great place for carnivals and parties in an exclusive bohemian style.
  • Puerto de Santiago is a unique area nestled between the wild cliffs of Los Gigantes. Its highlight is the huge beach of Playa la Arena, covered with black volcanic sand.

Prices and types of boats for rent in Tenerife

Catamarans for rent in Tenerife

The main advantages of a catamaran for rent:

  • lots of space inside and out;
  • there are cabins for privacy;
  • stability on the water due to minimal roll;
  • comfortable and safe movement on the deck;
  • minimum immersion in water.

You can rent small catamarans — up to 11, medium — up to 23, and large — from 50 to 150 people. Rental prices vary from 110 to 1200 euros per hour. The larger and newer the catamaran, the more expensive the boat rental services will be.

Motor yachts for rent in Tenerife

Booking a motorboat is preferred by those who love speed, excitement, luxury, and comfort. It allows you to visit many places in a short time. Their shallow draft allows you to reach some areas inaccessible to other types of boats.

Motorboats are equipped with the latest communication and navigation systems. There is plenty of space on board, a spacious flybridge below deck, a cozy cockpit lounge, and comfortable cabins. The capacity of most motor yachts is up to 12 people. Rental prices from 165 to 670 euros per hour.

Sailing yachts for rent in Tenerife

Sailboats are suitable for family, friends, corporate holidays, and dynamic and sporty sailing. The engine of a sailboat is weaker and is used much less compared to a motorboat. This reduces maintenance and fuel costs. Sailing yachts look more beautiful in photographs, so they are suitable for photo shoots, video filming, and romantic dates. The capacity of most sailing yachts is up to 11 people. Rental price from 65 to 250 euros per hour.

Speed boats for rent in Tenerife

Choosing a speed boat is worth making if you want to travel in the fresh air, with a pleasant breeze, and admire the picturesque views. On a rented boat, you can hold any event — from a birthday or a noisy friendly party to a business meeting. Renting a boat in Tenerife allows you to choose options suitable for any wallet — from budget to luxury models. The capacity of most yachts is up to 15 people. Rental price from 90 to 300 euros per hour.

Private boat and yacht rental in Tenerife

A yacht charter in Tenerife is the best way to explore this area in any month of the year.

The main advantages of this holiday option:

  • many options for rent — from sailboats and boats for sport fishing and water activities, catamarans to luxury yachts. The choice depends on the number of your passengers, individual needs, wishes, and budget;
  • individual approach to the wishes of each client — the choice of food, excursions, and entertainment;
  • avoidance of crowded places. No queues, no tedious waiting to get on and off the ship;
  • limitless possibilities. Where you go when you rent a boat is entirely up to you. If you want to sit on the water for a few hours and sunbathe or head to the neighboring island for a more secluded getaway, barbecue on the beach;
  • entertainment on the water: water-skiing, jet-skiing, scuba diving, flyboarding, windsurfing, fishing;
  • flexibility with times and directions. You create your schedule during the charter;
  • variety of places to visit. Unlike a cruise ship that follows a pre-planned itinerary, a charter yacht gives you the freedom to explore as many destinations as you wish;
  • a yacht charter in Tenerife is more affordable than owning a boat. No need to spend a lot of money on parking the vessel in the port and fuel. These costs are included in the rental price. Maintenance and repair of the ship are carried out by crew members.

Popular Yacht Experiences and Events

You can rent a boat in Tenerife for any private events:

  • Boat trips along the coast of Tenerife
  • Romantic date
  • Yacht management master class
  • Birthday or anniversary
  • Bachelorette or bachelor party
  • Wedding walk
  • Meeting the sunset
  • Whale and Dolphin Watching
  • Diving or snorkeling
  • Private party

In addition to the yacht rental service, you can order catering, and invite a DJ, photographer, animators, etc.

Charter a private yacht in tenerife with scansail.

Located in the Canary Islands, Tenerife is a mighty island within the Atlantic Ocean waiting to be explored. This idyllic island is filled with gorgeous beaches, secret coves, and lush greenery. Moreover, the climate allows for pleasant temperatures all year round. There is no wonder Tenerife is one of the top destinations around the world for a private yacht charter!

How much does it cost to charter a private yacht in Tenerife?

There are many components that influence the price of a private yacht charter. This includes but is not limited to the type of boat, the duration of the trip, the seasonality, and the size of the vessel. Below is a list of average prices according to boat type.

€4,000 per week

€2,765 per week

€3,542 per week

€3,003 per week

What is the best time to visit Tenerife?

Tenerife has a subtropical oceanic climate, meaning that the island experiences warm temperatures and sunshine throughout the year. If you go during the summer months, the temperature can reach 30 degrees Celsius every day, so a private yacht charter will be perfect for picking up a breeze and cooling off in the Atlantic Ocean.

Should I charter a private yacht with or without a skipper?

As you search through Scansail for your ideal private yacht charter, you will find that there are many boats that come with the option of a skipper. While it is possible to charter a yacht without a skipper, there are many advantages to having one on board with you. For instance, a professional skipper will bring you extra comfort and safety, as they will handle all the sailing, docking, and anchoring. Moreover, a skipper will be a local, so they can be sure to guide you around Tenerife and show you more of what you like and less of what you don’t.

What to do in Tenerife?

Tenerife is the largest island in the Canary Islands, making it one of the most exciting and diverse islands to explore. We have a few recommendations on what you can do during your private yacht charter in Tenerife to help inspire your holiday.

The first suggestion is to visit the beautiful beaches around the island. If you want to sink your feet into silky white sands, we recommend you head to Las Teresitas near the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Because of the northeast trade winds, the northern part of the island has stronger winds. This makes the beaches in the area perfect for water sports such as windsurfing and kite surfing. If you’d rather take advantage of your yacht charter, then you can also always navigate into the lively waters of the Atlantic and sail around the island’s hidden coves. When you’re out in the open waters, be sure to keep an eye out for the amazing marine life. If you go during the sunrise and sunset, you might catch a glimpse of whales and dolphins!

Thanks to the natural volcanic landscape, there are plenty of black sand beaches completely unique to the archipelago. If you find yourself near the town of San Andrés, then make sure to visit Las Gaviotas beach to witness the astounding shores for yourself! The striking contrast between the dark sands, the deep blue waters, and the bright sky is an unforgettable experience. If you are searching for a more secluded black sand beach, another recommendation is Playa El Bollullo. This hidden gem is harder to reach by land, so a private yacht charter is an ideal way to reach this remote beach.

If you want to get to know the natural landscape of Tenerife, there are also many activities you can do on land. One of the best ways to get to know a location is simply to walk around the towns and take in the ambience. Of course, we recommend you wander around the streets of the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This is a coastal city, making it perfect to moor your yacht and walk around during the day. We also suggest you head to Puerto de la Cruz on the northern coast of the island where you can dock in the old harbour with 17th-century architecture. Finally, we also highly recommend that you visit the astounding El Teide volcano. This is the third-highest volcano in the world and Tenerife’s highest peak. For an action-packed holiday, there are several hiking trails and guided tours around the peak that are a must-see. Once up high enough, you can get a beautiful panoramic view of the island, making for an unforgettable holiday.

Explore nearby destinations on your private yacht charter

If you have the time and want to explore beyond the borders of Tenerife, you can take your private yacht charter island hopping around the Canary Islands. The other three islands in the archipelago are La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. Each of these has its own unique character and a wide range of hidden coves that are waiting to be seen.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Tenerife

Sailing in the beautiful waters of Tenerife offers an experience like no other. Whether you’re an adventurous soul looking to conquer the waves or seeking a relaxing escape amidst stunning vistas, the choice between sailing a boat or catamaran can shape your journey. Allow us to guide you through these two unique options, each providing its charm and features, ensuring you make the right choice for your nautical adventure in Tenerife.

Sailing Boat

A sailing boat is an epitome of grace and classic elegance on the sea. Ideal for the true sailing enthusiasts, sailing boats provide an authentic and intimate connection with the ocean. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Maneuverability : Sailing boats offer excellent control and responsiveness, allowing you to navigate even the tightest corners of Tenerife’s diverse coastline.
  • Intimate Experience : Generally smaller than catamarans, sailing boats offer a more personal experience, perfect for romantic getaways or small gatherings of friends and family.
  • Performance : For those seeking the thrill of traditional sailing, a monohull sailing boat delivers an exciting ride, leaning into the wind and cutting through waves.
  • Fuel Efficiency : Sailing boats tend to consume less fuel when under engine power, making them a more eco-friendly option.
  • Accessibility : With a variety of sizes and configurations, sailing boats can access secluded bays and hidden beaches, providing a chance to explore Tenerife’s lesser-known treasures.

Catamarans, with their twin hulls and broad decks, are known for stability and space. They offer a distinctive sailing experience that appeals to both novices and experienced sailors. Here’s what sets catamarans apart:

  • Stability : Catamarans provide a stable and smooth ride, minimizing the risk of seasickness. This makes them suitable for families with children or those new to sailing.
  • Space and Comfort : With expansive lounging areas, catamarans offer more room for relaxation and entertainment, great for larger groups or those wanting extra comfort.
  • Shallow Draft : The shallow draft of a catamaran allows access to shallow waters, opening up more exploration opportunities along Tenerife’s coast.
  • Speed : Under certain wind conditions, catamarans can achieve impressive speeds, adding an exhilarating touch to your journey.
  • Visibility : The elevated helm position and wide deck design offer excellent visibility, enhancing safety and navigation.

Whether to sail a sailing boat or catamaran in Tenerife depends on your preferences, group size, and the kind of experience you seek. For the purists who enjoy the thrill of traditional sailing, a sailing boat is the way to go. For those looking for stability, space, and comfort, a catamaran offers an unmatched experience.

At Yachting.Rent, we provide both options, all meticulously maintained and equipped with modern amenities. Our knowledgeable staff will be more than happy to assist you in selecting the perfect vessel for your unforgettable adventure in Tenerife. Let the winds guide you, and set sail into the mesmerizing beauty of the island with the confidence that you’ve made the right choice.

At The Yacht Engine we're on a mission to make boating more accessible and to make it easier for you to get on the water. We believe boating should be available to everyone, and we can help the boating industry, boat owners, marinas, and everyone who wants to go boating by providing a 21st-century boating marketplace. The Yacht Engine is the best place to find and rent boats of all sorts, from a canal and riverboat across Europe to a sailing boat, motor boat, catamaran across North America, the Mediterranean, Caribbean and further afield, along with some of the world's most impressive superyachts and luxury yacht charters.

Boats or Yachts Available For Rent Or Charter In Tenerife

Where it comes to chartering or renting boats in Tenerife below is a list of the typical types of boats that you can hire on The Yacht Engine with a description of the boat type. If you can't find the individual boat charter you are looking for when you do a search in Tenerife it's worthwhile searching nearby locations as your chosen boat type might be available nearby.

When searching a geographical area on The Yacht Engine you can filter by the below boat types. There is also the option to further filter your searches by price, the number of guests, cabins or bathrooms, what year the boat or sailing yacht was launched, the boat length and the boat manufacturer.

Sailing Yacht (Sailboat): From €120/£100/$135 a day up to whatever you can afford, monohull sailing yachts are fun to sail at all points of the wind and an affordable way to get around if your island hopping or finding your own secluded coves or sandy beaches along with longer cruises. Sizes range from those for a couple or small family to a full sized luxury charter yacht.

Catamaran: Luxury catamarans are stable and spacious, with quick sailing performance, and and have been gaining in popularity in recent years. Better for larger groups, they have lots of room for water toys, and are big enough for a little privacy. A catamaran charter is easy and comfortable for novices not used to heeling and are loved by families due to their extra space when compared to a monohull. Typically far more luxurious than a sailboat the larger catamarans have en suite toilets and showers in the staterooms as well as ample entertaining space in the saloon and on deck.

Power Catamaran: These types of boats are relatively new but have also been gaining in popularity as the two hulls keep the boat more stable when compared to a monohull. The wider beam also means more deck space and as they don't have sails or a mast, they have a lot more space on deck than a sailing catamaran rental or monohull. For a luxury catamaran charter, consider taking a crewed catamaran charter sailing vacation with an experienced skipper.

Luxury Yacht: Luxury yacht charters are available for either a sailing yacht (sailboat), catamaran or motorboat and will have a crew and host/hostess on hand to cater for whatever your needs are along with a skipper who will have a detailed knowledge of your cruising area. On a crewed yacht charter of this kind you get to create your own personal itinerary and will have far greater range than on other boats which allows for lots of variety in how you travel and what you do.

Superyacht: A superyacht or sometimes called mega yacht are boats which are least 24 metres (79 feet) in length up to 180 metres (590 feet) and can either be sailing yachts (sailboats) or motorboats. These types of boats are most frequently found in the Med of Caribbean and due to their size they will have a large chartering area and can typically pick you up from whatever location you require rather than you being required to get to a set marina to start your charter. They are fully crewed with professional staff who will cater for your every need along with a skipper who will have extensive knowledge of your chosen cruising areas.

Motorboat: This covers a wide variety of boats from a motor yacht with cabins to a private boat trip for a fishing trip but all of the these are comfortable seagoing boats with a kick of speed should you want to cover a bigger distance on the day.

RIB: Very much day boats for fishing and day cruising, RIBs are a lot of fun for a day afloat. They can be very quick and are great should you be in a town on holiday and fancy seeing the coast or finding secluded sandy beaches to get away from it all.

Skippered Yacht Charter or Bareboat

When it comes to boat hire or yacht charter in Tenerife you typically have two choices - bareboat yacht hire or skippered yacht charter.

When using The Yacht Engine you can filter all boat searches to be with or without skipper depending on what you are looking for and below we cover some of the main points to consider for your boat hire.

Skippered Charter: A skippered yacht charter gives you the advantage of being able to get afloat without having to invest in getting sailing qualifications before hand. For a monohull sailing yacht you will pay €120/£100/$135 plus a day extra for the skipper, as well as their food and a tip at the end.

When you get to a luxury yacht or superyacht charter with crew these prices will increase and costs also depend on where you plan to sail to along with the size and type of boat rental on your sailing holiday.

In some cases skippers will also be the yacht or boat owners (typically day trips) which means they will know all the best secluded beaches to show you the best that the area has to offer with their local knowledge.

For day trips you will often be able to use a skipper as well and prices will vary depending on the type of boat.

Bareboat Yacht Charter: For skilled sailors, a bareboat charter is cheaper and gives more privacy for you and your charter guests. Many sailors prefer to be helming the boat while choosing their own course, and provided you have the knowledge and relevant qualifications you can skipper these boats (typically up to 54 feet/16.5 metres in length) yourself.

Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Yacht In Tenerife

If you are on a gulet or skippered yacht charter you do not need a license to sail a yacht out of Tenerife. This is also the case where you are renting a small motorboat without a cabin for a day trip around the local islands or beaches.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat yacht charter, here are some examples of sailing qualifications:

International Certificate of Competence: This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

RYA Qualifications: If you have the following qualifications you will be able to take a bareboat charter out of Tenerife, these include Day Skipper (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster.

American Sailing Association (ASA): The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted.

US Sailing: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

Frequently asked questions

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Cost of boat rental in tenerife.

The prices for yacht charters in Tenerife are closely tied to the weather and sailing conditions throughout the year. They tend to be at their lowest in January, corresponding to the low season, and reach their peak in October when demand is high and sailing conditions are optimal.

Tenerife, one of the most beautiful of the Spanish Canary Islands, offers everything vacationers need to enjoy a West African escape. The lush volcanic rocks and year-round picturesque skies make Tenerife one of the most sought-after sailing destinations in the world. While not as well-known as the Mediterranean and Carribean, these beaches attract serious skippers for many reasons. It is the perfect place for stargazing on the beach, experiencing Canary Island wildlife, and enjoying some incredible international attractions such as Mount Teide and The Masca Walk.

12 Knots wants to help every sailor make the most of their Tenerife yacht, sailboat, or catamaran charter. Before you book a sailboat rental in Tenerife, here is what you should know:

Sailing Conditions in Tenerife

The winds in Tenerife blow consistently throughout the year, influenced by the north-east trade winds. These trade winds are strongest in the spring and summer, especially July. The tides in Tenerife are also very consistent, with the greatest tidal range averaging around 2.8 meters. While winds in the Canary Islands may be strong for beginner sailors, the benevolent weather and calm seas can provide a pleasurable sailing season.

Best Time to Vacation in Tenerife

The best time to visit Tenerife and the Canary Islands is the spring and early fall. The island becomes crowded with tourists during the summer months, making it less pleasurable for sailors. Entertainment, dining, and island excursions will also be more expensive during the summer. March, April, May, and September offer the best weather and fewer tourists on land, which is when 12 Knots recommends our clients book their trips.

Sailing Difficulty Level

Sailing in Tenerife is very enjoyable for experienced sailors, and can provide a great first challenge for beginners. All seven main islands of the Canaries are within a day’s sail of each other, offering plenty of opportunities to sightsee and enjoy your West African trip to the fullest. Between the islands, however, are more challenging sailing trips that could pose difficulty for novice skippers.

Wind speeds change more quickly near Tenerife than in other seas. It is not unusual to experience a calm 10 knots, only for the winds to kick up to 30 knots within a short distance. You must be vigilant for white caps, and be ready to reef when wind speeds kick up. Therefore, those with little sailing experience may fare better with a crewed charter due to the sailing challenges that can be more complex than Caribbean sailing.

Main Charter Bases

Tenerife is one of 12 Knots' most popular sailing charter destinations. We offer a variety of sailboat options for bareboat and crewed operations. Some of our primary bases in Tenerife include:

  • Marina San Miguel
  • Puerto Deportivo Radazul
  • Marina del Sur
  • And many more!

Boat Types for Charters

12 Knots offers both crewed and bareboat charters in Tenerife. In order to fully enjoy your trip to the Canary Islands, you want to choose a vessel that meets your needs. We have over 79 boats from which to choose that are available in Tenerife. Some of your options may include:

  • Sailing yacht

Other Information

Before booking your Tenerife sailing vacation, you should know the basic travel requirements for the Canary Islands:

  • Official currency: Euro (EU)
  • Entry Requirements: Non-European citizens are required to have a visa and a passport that is valid at least three months after their trip. European citizens typically only have to have a passport valid until their departure date.
  • Best months to visit: March, April, May, September, October, November
  • Average daily cost to visit Tenerife:  $65 - $115; €60- €100
  • Medical information: There are typically no vaccine requirements for Tenerife unless your country is at risk for certain diseases. Most European citizens can receive reimbursements on medical costs using EHIC resources.

Yacht Charter & Boat Rental in Tenerife

Home | Travel | Europe | Spain | Canary Islands | Tenerife | Yacht Charter & Boat Rental in Tenerife

Renting a boat in Tenerife can be an absolute blast, especially if you’re traveling with friends or a group. While there are plenty of boat excursions from Tenerife , I assure you that nothing beats having your own boat and exploring the stunning coast of Tenerife and the other Canary Islands.

A few years back, during a trip to Tenerife with some friends, we seized the opportunity to find a boat rental in Tenerife , thanks to our friend Jorge, who had the necessary license and experience. However, we decided to go with a skipper because we were on vacation and Jorge wanted the freedom to enjoy a drink or two. Nonetheless, we had a great time exploring the island’s coastline, and we were lucky enough to spot a group of pilot whales in the distance.

If you’re thinking of doing something similar and need information on how to hire a boat in Tenerife , you’ve come to the right place. I’ll walk you through it all.

Why hire a boat in Tenerife?

Hiring a boat in Tenerife offers an incredible range of options to suit different group sizes and budgets. Moreover, you can choose to rent a boat in Tenerife with or without a skipper and opt for hourly rentals or full-day adventures. The best part is that a boat charter in Tenerife allows you to plan your own itinerary and access places that might be otherwise inaccessible. It’s a dream come true for water sports enthusiasts, whether you’re into diving, snorkeling, or just want to enjoy the tranquility of the open sea.

What do you need to rent a boat in Tenerife?

To have a boat rental in Tenerife with a skipper, you won’t need any specific license or permit. However, if you choose to hire a boat in Tenerife without a skipper, you may require a license depending on the boat’s size and power.

Keep in mind that there are different types of licenses, similar to a driver’s license. Each type of license only allows you to rent certain types of boats.

Rent a boat in Tenerife without a license

If you don’t hold a boat license, your options for finding boat rentals in Tenerife are a bit limited. You can either rent a boat with a skipper or opt for boats with a maximum of 20 ft in length and engines with a maximum power of 15 HP.

Sailboat in the ocean, boat rental in tenerife

Choosing a boat charter in Tenerife with a skipper allows you to select any type of boat you want, regardless of its size or power. The skipper will take charge of all the navigation responsibilities. On the other hand, if you prefer to go without a skipper, you’ll be limited to RIBs and smaller boats. However, keep in mind that not all inflatables and boats meet the size and power criteria, so make sure to check this in advance.

Rent a boat in Tenerife with a license

If you do possess a valid boating license, you’ll have a wider range of options for hiring a boat rental in Tenerife . You can choose to rent a boat with or without a skipper.

Having a rental boat without a skipper gives you full control over navigation. However, it’s crucial to match your license to the type of boat you wish to operate. Here’s a breakdown of the boating license categories in Spain and what they allow you to do:

  • Navigation License : This is the most basic license, allowing you to operate boats up to 20 ft in length with no engine power limit. However, navigation is limited to daytime and within a maximum distance of 2 miles from the coast.
  • Basic Navigation Pattern : With this license, you can handle motor boats up to 26 ft in length with no engine power limit. You can sail both day and night, but you cannot go more than 5 miles from the coast.

Motorboat rental, boat hire in tenerife

  • Recreational Boat Pattern (PER) : This license allows you to operate boats up to 50 ft in length with no engine power restrictions. You can navigate both day and night and travel a maximum of 12 miles from the coast.
  • Yacht Skipper License : With this license, you can operate boats up to 78 ft in length, without any power restrictions, and navigate both day and night. You can venture up to 150 miles from the coast.
  • Yacht Captain License : This is the most comprehensive license, enabling you to handle any type of boat, regardless of length or power. You are allowed to sail during both day and night, without limitations on the distance from the coast.

Keep in mind that these are the boating licenses issued by Spain. If you’re from a different European country, you can probably apply for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) to accompany your existing boating license. If you’re from the United States, you can get an International Sailing License and Credentials (SLC) certificate.

Of course, make sure that your chosen boat rental in Tenerife falls within the restrictions set by your license.

Types of boat hires in Tenerife

You will find various types of rental boats in Tenerife , each suited to different types of trips and group sizes. However, if you’re considering renting without a skipper, remember that you’ll need the appropriate license that matches the boat’s characteristics.

Here are some of the types of boats you can rent in Tenerife:

Sailboat rentals in Tenerife, the best option for a boat trip

For a fantastic boat trip near the coast with a group of up to 6 or 8 people, I highly recommend renting a sailboat in Tenerife . You can find smaller sailboats that don’t require a license. Still, you’ll need basic experience and navigation knowledge. Larger sailboats with more power may require a license unless you rent them with a skipper.

Sailboat ride, boat hire tenerife south

Sailing a sailboat isn’t a walk in the park, so you’ll need some basic navigation skills and the ability to use the wind’s power to move the boat. Additionally, you need to keep an eye on weather conditions, although Tenerife usually has excellent weather.

You can find a sailboat rental in Tenerife to bask in the sun, go on coastal excursions, spot whales , or enjoy water activities like diving and snorkeling.

Catamaran boat hire in Tenerife, a fun option for groups and families

If you want to rent a catamaran in Tenerife , you’ll need the PER or Recreational Boat Pattern license and some sailing experience. Alternatively, you can rent a catamaran with a skipper, in which case neither a license nor experience is required.

Catamaran in Tenerife, boat hire tenerife costa adeje

Catamarans are perfect for family or group outings since they can accommodate up to 12 people. They are quite stable, making them ideal for families with children. Moreover, catamaran rentals in Tenerife are available year-round, as the weather conditions are generally favorable.

The best thing about catamaran trips in Tenerife is that you can access areas with shallow water levels. So, if you want to sunbathe near one of the best beaches in Tenerife or enjoy snorkeling, this boat is an excellent choice.

Yacht rentals in Tenerife, the ideal option for parties

If you’re looking for a luxurious and comfortable experience, renting a yacht in Tenerife is the way to go. However, it’s crucial to note that operating a yacht requires a license, which might vary depending on the boat’s size and your previous experience.

Yacht rentals, private boat hire tenerife

If you lack a license or experience, you can search for yachts for rent in Tenerife with a skipper, so you don’t have to worry about anything. In some cases, yachts are available with extra crew members, so if you’re seeking a private experience, make sure to check this option.

There’s a wide range of yachts available, and you can even choose to include extra services such as a hostess on board. Undoubtedly, yachts in Tenerife are one of the best choices if you want to surround yourself with luxury and comfort while cruising the beautiful coast of the Island.

Motorboat rental in Tenerife, a small and practical option

Renting a motorboat in Tenerife is a fantastic choice, especially if you don’t have a license. If the boat is under 20 ft in length and has a power output of less than 15 HP, you can handle it without any prior navigation experience, since they are incredibly easy to operate.

RIB inflatable boat, catamaran trips tenerife

If you want a larger and more powerful boat but you don’t have a license, your best option is to find a motorboat rental in Tenerife with a skipper. Some of these boats even come equipped with small cabins for overnight stays. The capacity of these motorboats varies based on their size; some of them can even accommodate up to 12 people.

If you want to enjoy your favorite activities without limitations, hiring a motorboat rental in Tenerife is your best bet. You can engage in various water sports and easily disembark at almost any point along the coast of Tenerife. However, it’s worth noting that these boats may not be the best choice for whale or dolphin watching, as their engine noise tends to scare away these marine animals.

RIB boat hire in Tenerife, an inflatable option for quick trips

Another great option for boat rentals in Tenerife is to go for an inflatable boat, also known as a semi-rigid or RIBs. Similar to regular boats, you can operate these without a license as long as they don’t exceed 20 ft in length and have a power output of less than 15 HP. Otherwise, you will need a license, or you can rent one with a skipper.

RIB boat, boat rental tenerife south

Inflatable boats in Tenerife offer an experience very similar to a speedboat, so you can enjoy water sports, such as snorkeling. Plus, you can disembark at various points along Tenerife’s coastline, including remote areas. Here again, you should keep in mind that if you want to observe pilot whales and dolphins, these boats may not be the best choice due to the engine noise, which can frighten these marine mammals.

RIB boat rentals in Tenerife are an excellent option if you’re looking for an easy-to-handle boat for enjoying the sun and the beauty of Tenerife’s ocean.

Other types of boat rentals in Tenerife

As mentioned before, when considering boat rentals in Tenerife , understanding the different options will help you make the right choice based on your needs and circumstances. Let’s explore three ways you can hire a boat in Tenerife :

Hire a boat in Tenerife without a skipper

Opting for a boat rental in Tenerife without a skipper means you become the captain of the boat. You take on the responsibility of managing the vessel and deciding the entire itinerary. In other words, only you and your companions will be on board.

Motorboat in the ocean, boat charter tenerife

Remember that if you decide to rent a boat in Tenerife without a skipper , you’ll need a license for boats that are 20 ft or longer and have a power output greater than 15 HP. Plus, to operate some boats you need sailing experience, particularly sailboats and catamarans.

So, make sure you have the appropriate license for the boat you want to rent, or consider smaller boats or inflatables if you don’t have the required license.

Rent a boat in Tenerife with a skipper

When you choose to rent a boat in Tenerife with a skipper , you’ll be accompanied by a licensed navigation expert. In this case, you have the freedom to select the rental boat without limitations because the skipper who has the necessary permits will be the sole person responsible for navigation and handling the boat.

Sailboat in Tenerife, self drive boat hire tenerife

One of the advantages of having a professional skipper on board is that you can relax and let them recommend routes and itineraries. They typically have excellent knowledge of the area, so if you ask, they might recommend remote and lesser-known locations that don’t appear in tourist guides and can only be accessed by sea.

Another option is to rent a boat in Tenerife with a guide . In this case, the boat’s owner will be on board, but you will be in charge of operating the boat, just like renting a boat without a skipper. So, you still need to have the appropriate license to operate certain boats. This can be a great choice if you have the required license but lack sufficient experience and prefer to have someone accompany you on the journey.

Tenerife boat rental prices

The price of a private boat hire in Tenerife can vary depending on a range of factors including the dates of your trip, the type of boat, its size, power, characteristics, and whether you rent with or without a skipper. Price for a motorboat rental in Tenerife

You can rent a boat in Tenerife with or without a skipper, with the latter being the cheapest option. Prices may increase depending on various factors, including the boat’s size and power.

Motorboat tour, tenerife boat rental

For smaller motorboats suitable for around 4-5 people, available for rent without a skipper and a license, prices typically start at approximately €600. Boats longer than 20 ft and with more than 15 HP of power begin at around €1,100. If you don’t have a license, you’ll need to rent these with a skipper, which makes these rentals more expensive. The larger boats can accommodate up to 12 people, making them an ideal choice for larger groups.

Keep in mind that these prices may vary depending on your travel dates, as well as the specific size and features of the boat you choose.

Tenerife RIB boat rental prices

Inflatable boat rentals in Tenerife are often priced a bit lower compared to regular boats, making them a fantastic choice if you’re looking for an affordable rental option.

RIB inflatable boat rentals, boat hire tenerife south

For smaller RIB boats, less than 20 ft in length and with less than 15 HP of power, you can find rentals starting at around €500. However, for more powerful or larger inflatables, which require a license or a skipper, prices can go up to around €1,000. Smaller inflatables can accommodate up to 8 people, while the larger ones can fit up to 12.

Please note that the prices provided for RIB boat rentals in Tenerife are just examples and may vary depending on your travel dates and other factors.

Price for sailboat rentals in Tenerife

Renting a sailboat is a great choice in terms of quality-price ratio, especially if you have the required license and experience to operate it, as you don’t have to pay for a skipper. You can even find very affordable sailboats that are not far from the price of regular boats or inflatables.

Sailboat ride, rent a yacht in tenerife with skipper

The best thing about renting a sailboat in Tenerife is that you’ll have a higher chance of spotting whales and dolphins . Since these boats can be operated without a motor, marine mammals are less likely to be scared away.

You can usually find sailboats designed for up to 6 people starting at around €600 without a skipper and €1,200 with a skipper. If you need a sailboat for a larger group (some can accommodate up to 12 passengers), the price will naturally be higher. Additionally, prices may vary based on your travel dates.

Tenerife catamaran rental prices

Renting a catamaran in Tenerife is another excellent option, especially if you’re looking for a larger boat. Similar to sailboats, if you don’t have the necessary license and experience, you will need to rent a catamaran with a skipper.

Motorized RIB boat, boat rental tenerife south

Catamarans designed for approximately 6-8 people typically start at around €1,300 without a skipper and €1,500 with a skipper. The price difference, in this case, is not substantial, so, it’s worth it to have a navigation expert who is also familiar with the area.

As with any other boat, catamaran rental prices can vary depending on factors such as your travel dates and the size of the catamaran.

Price to rent a yacht in Tenerife

Renting a yacht in Tenerife is the most luxurious and the most expensive option. Yachts offer a spacious and comfortable experience, with some even equipped with amenities like a small dining area, galley, and cabins. In fact, you can stay on board as if you are in a hotel.

As you can see in the table, the price of the most affordable yachts starts at around €2,400 without a skipper, and €3,200 with a skipper. However, the price range for yachts is quite extensive and can go beyond €50,000 or even €100,000 for 4 days, depending on the boat’s capacity and facilities.

Yacht rentals in Tenerife are ideal for groups. Smaller yachts can accommodate up to 12 people, while the larger ones can host as many as 36.

Hourly boat hires in Tenerife

The best thing about hiring a boat in Tenerife is the flexibility in terms of duration. SamBoat offers options for both half-day (which is usually the minimum) and full-day rentals.

If your goal is a multi-day adventure around Tenerife, full-day rentals are a suitable choice. However, if you simply want to embark on a whale and dolphin-watching excursion, go snorkeling, or enjoy a sunset cruise on the ocean, you can rent the boat for half a day.

Important ports in Tenerife with boat rentals

There are several ports from where you can rent a boat in Tenerife . To find the perfect boat, it’s a good idea to check out various departure points, so you can have a wider selection of options to choose from.

Boat rentals in Los Gigantes, Tenerife

Los Gigantes is one of the most popular places to find boat rentals in Tenerife South . It’s renowned not only for its diverse range of boat options but also for its proximity to one of the island’s natural wonders, the Los Gigantes Cliffs , which are even more impressive when you view them from the sea.

Los Gigantes, tenerife catamaran

From Los Gigantes, you can reach some beautiful beaches, including Los Guíos Beach and Playa Chica, ideal for water activities. This area is also a great starting point for excursions to see dolphins and pilot whales.

I recommend booking your boat rental in Los Gigantes, Tenerife well in advance, as it is one of the most popular ports on the island. Prices can vary depending on the season, but you can find boats starting at around €180 per day, with an average additional cost of approximately €200 per day for a skipper if needed.

Boat hires in Costa Adeje, Tenerife (Club Nautico Puerto Colón)

Another great place for boat hires in Tenerife Costa Adeje , specifically at the Puerto Colón Nautical Club . However, your options here are more limited compared to Los Gigantes, so if you plan to depart from Costa Adeje , I recommend making the reservation well in advance. Most of the boats available here are small, such as motor boats, inflatables, or sailboats, many of which can be operated without a license.

Costa Adeje, catamaran trips tenerife

Although prices may vary depending on the season, you could find boats starting at around €270 per day. Additionally, if a skipper is required, the extra cost is approximately €200 per day on average. Despite its smaller collection of boats, Costa Adeje is an excellent choice for boat rentals in southern Tenerife as it offers incredibly affordable prices.

Boat rentals in Tenerife South (Marina Las Galletas)

Marina Las Galletas is another great place to find boat rentals in Tenerife South . This charming marina is located in Las Galletas, a town with a long fishing tradition. You’ll also be near El Médano , one of the most beautiful places to visit in Tenerife South , which is accessible by sea.

El Medano beach, hire a boat in tenerife

While the marina itself is relatively small, you can still find a selection of boats, including motor boats, sailboats, catamarans, and inflatables. Still, it’s a good idea to make an advance reservation to ensure you can find the perfect boat for your trip. One notable advantage here is that you can find some of the best prices for boat hires in Tenerife South , starting from €50 per day without a skipper.

Tenerife boat hires in San Miguel de Abona (Marina San Miguel)

San Miguel de Abona has become one of the most popular destinations for travelers looking to rent boat charters in Tenerife . To operate these types of boats, you’ll need a proper license and sailing experience. Otherwise, you must go with a skipper.

Playa de la Pelada, boat hire tenerife south

When you rent a boat in this town, you have the opportunity to explore El Médano, the Costa del Silencio, and even venture along the coast toward Los Cristianos and the Cliffs of Los Gigantes. The area is full of beautiful coves and beaches that are well worth a visit.

You can find rental boats in Marina San Miguel in Tenerife South starting at around €90 per day. If you also need a skipper to accompany you, the average additional cost is approximately €200 per day.

Boat rentals in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

For those looking for boat rentals in Santa Cruz de Tenerife , this city offers a wide range of options, including luxury yachts.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, rental boats tenerife

From Santa Cruz de Tenerife, you can explore the island’s northern coast, venture even toward Teno Rural Park and its famous lighthouse, and visit the Cliffs of Los Gigantes. A boat hire in Santa Cruz de Tenerife allows you to access areas that are often difficult to reach.

Keep in mind that the prices of rental boats in Santa Cruz de Tenerife are somewhat higher compared to other locations. Depending on your choice of boat, you can expect prices ranging from €200 to €650 per day. If you’re interested in renting a sailboat with a skipper, you’ll end up spending at least €3,500 per day.

Places to sail with your Tenerife boat rental

With a boat rental in Tenerife , you can easily explore the entire coast. It’s important to adhere to the maximum distance limits allowed by your license or your skipper. However, if your main goal is to explore Tenerife, you shouldn’t worry much since almost any boat and license will permit this. The island does not have areas restricted to navigation, but the size of your boat will determine which destinations you can access.

I recommend adding to your itinerary some of the places that are more accessible by sea or are only reachable by boat, such as Masca Beach . While it can be reached by hiking through the Masca Ravine , the trail is not suitable for everyone, so a rental boat can be an excellent alternative.

I also recommend visiting Ocadilla Beach , located near Punta de Hidalgo, which is accessible only by kayak or a small boat. And don’t miss the opportunity to visit Montaña Pelada Beach and Ancón Beach , both of which are hidden gems.

Masca Beach, tenerife party boats

If you want a boat rental in Tenerife South for excursions to other Canary Islands, you should keep in mind that not all boats are suited for this purpose, and not all licenses permit it. The closest neighboring island, Gran Canaria, is situated 43 nautical miles from the coast of Tenerife. To make this journey, you’ll require, at least the Yacht Skipper’s card. With this same license, you can venture to Lanzarote and Fuerteventura from Tenerife, located 148 and 100 miles away, respectively.

If you have a chance to visit Gran Canaria , I recommend exploring Maspalomas Beach, Melenera Beach, or Puertillo, all of which are easily accessible by boat. If you’re lucky, you might even spot whales and dolphins in Gran Canaria , as they are commonly seen along the coast.

From Lanzarote , you can visit Playa Blanca , journey along the coast to the west and see Timanfaya National Park , or head east to explore Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise .

Finally, in Fuerteventura , you can sail to Puerto del Rosario , explore Cofete Beach , or make your way to Isla de Lobos .

Things to do on a Tenerife rental boat

Before renting a boat in Tenerife , you must understand what activities are permitted on board. While general guidelines apply, each boat owner may have their own specific rules and regulations, so it’s essential to clarify these details. For instance, if you’re considering a boat hire in Tenerife for a party, you should confirm with the boat owner whether such activities are allowed on their vessel.

Permitted activities on Tenerife rental boats

You can have a great time with your boat rental in Tenerife , whether you want to explore the coast or visit other Canary Islands. You can relax, snorkel, participate in water sports, or even reach remote and inaccessible places that are hard to reach by land. And don’t forget to keep your eyes open for spotting whales and dolphins as well.

Dolphin-watching in Tenerife, boat rental tenerife south

Some boats are fully equipped for a comfortable experience, offering cabins, galleys, saloons, heads (toilets), and more.

Holding parties and events on board is allowed only if the boat owner permits, and on the condition that these activities do not endanger passengers, the boat, or the environment. It is crucial to adhere to navigation regulations and follow the skipper’s instructions at all times.

Prohibited activities on Tenerife rental boats

Certain rental boats in Tenerife may not allow parties or events. You can only throw parties when the boat has sufficient space and is equipped for such gatherings, provided that the owner has given you permission.

You cannot engage in any illegal activities or actions that could harm the environment, impact local flora and fauna, or cause excessive noise. Operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited.

Furthermore, you should always follow the navigation rules and listen to the skipper’s instructions.

When is the best time to hire a boat in Tenerife?

You can opt for a boat rental in Tenerife pretty much any time of the year, due to the island’s favorable weather conditions. However, the best months to enjoy smooth sailing are typically between April and October. During this period, you can enjoy relatively stable weather and sea conditions.

Boat dock, private boat hire tenerife

From November to March, winds tend to be more unpredictable, requiring more sailing experience, especially if you’re planning for a catamaran trip in Tenerife . In such cases, it’s a good idea to have an experienced skipper onboard to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Other tips for renting a boat in Tenerife

Now, here are some pro tips to ensure you have a fantastic time while renting a boat in Tenerife :

  • Don’t forget to pack sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun’s rays since you’ll be exposed for long hours.
  • If you plan to spend the night on the open sea, bring warm clothing as temperatures can drop during the night.
  • While onboard, only wear comfortable rubber shoes or go barefoot , as high heels or hard-soled shoes can damage the boat. In fact, some skippers may request that you go barefoot on deck.
  • It’s always a good idea to book your boat rental in Tenerife in advance .
  • Set some extra money aside for potential additional costs like hiring a skipper, covering fuel expenses, or paying any required deposits.
  • Carefully read all the features and characteristics of each boat before making a reservation . If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to the boat owner or search the SamBoat website.
  • Do not touch any equipment on the boat without the skipper’s permission, and always follow their instructions .
  • Avoid jumping into the water while the boat is moving or maneuvering, or if the swim ladder is not properly secured .
  • Keep all personal items stowed away and avoid leaving anything on deck , as it might fall into the water.
  • When renting a boat in Tenerife, choose your fellow passengers carefully . Given the limited space on board, it’s essential to have a compatible and enjoyable atmosphere with those you share the experience with.

Most importantly, don’t forget to enjoy every moment of the adventure! Tenerife is a stunning island, and exploring it by boat, while docking at various ports, will be a unique and unforgettable trip.

What is the best season for a boat trip in Tenerife?

The best time of year for a boating holiday is during the summer months, between June and September . The weather is warm, sunny and relatively dry. During this time, the winds and the waters are calm, making for smooth sailing conditions, perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

However, it is important to note that Tenerife's weather can be quite unpredictable, and sudden storms and high winds can occur at any time of the year. Therefore, checking the weather forecast and sea conditions before embarking on a sailing trip is recommended.

In addition to the summer months, the shoulder seasons of April to May and October to November can also be a good time to go yachting in Tenerife. During these months, the weather is still warm and sunny, and the crowds are thinner, allowing for a more peaceful and relaxing sailing experience.

Where can I rent a boat in Tenerife?

Tenerife is home to several ports, each with its own unique charm and attractions. Here are some of the main ports you can visit on the island:

  • Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port:  This is the main commercial port on the island, located in the capital city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It is one of the Canary Islands' busiest ports, handling cargo and passenger traffic.
  • Los Cristianos Port:  Located on the island's southern coast, Los Cristianos port is a popular destination for ferries and catamarans, with regular services to the neighbouring nearby islands.
  • Puerto de la Cruz Port: Located on the island's northern coast, this port is mainly used by small fishing boats and pleasure crafts and offers various water sports activities.

Where to sail in Tenerife?

Sailing around Tenerife and the Canary Islands offers a diverse range of landscapes, from volcanic terrain to lush greenery, along with vibrant marine life and charming coastal towns. Here's a suggested sailing route to explore the highlights of these beautiful islands:

Day 1: Tenerife - La Gomera

Depart from Tenerife, sailing southwest towards La Gomera, a journey of around 40 nautical miles. Anchor in San Sebastián de La Gomera, the island's capital, and explore its historic center and charming harbor.

Day 2: La Gomera - La Palma

Sail northwest from La Gomera to La Palma, covering a distance of approximately 50 nautical miles. Arrive at Santa Cruz de La Palma, a picturesque town with colorful colonial architecture. Spend the day exploring the town's narrow streets, local markets, and historic sites.

Day 3: La Palma - El Hierro

Continue your journey southwest to El Hierro, the smallest and least-visited Canary Island, located around 35 nautical miles from La Palma. Anchor in the port of La Restinga or La Estaca and take the opportunity to discover the island's rugged coastline and natural beauty.

Day 4: El Hierro - Tenerife

Sail northeast back to Tenerife, completing the loop around the Canary Islands. Depending on your starting point in El Hierro, the distance can vary, but it's approximately 100 nautical miles. Return to Tenerife and spend your final evening enjoying the vibrant nightlife or relaxing on the beach.

Should I rent a boat in Tenerife with or without a skipper?

If you’ve got a licence to sail, whether you choose to have a skipper on board your boat charter in Tenerife is up to you; however, it is always recommended for safe and smooth sailing. Skippered vessels tend to be more expensive than bareboat charters. However, the extra cost is well worth it. The cost of a skippered vessel will depend on the type of boat, but on average, it is around €200. You can often add a skipper to your vessel at an additional cost.

There are many benefits to having a skipper present for both avid and novice sailors alike. Skippers are nautical professionals that can help you hone your sailing technique, or if you’re unlicensed, dock, anchor and sail the vessel for you so that you don’t have to worry about anything throughout your boat trip. Perhaps the best thing about choosing a skippered yacht rental in Tenerife is that skippers are usually locals of the area, so they can show you everything on your sailing itinerary and more. See the best of the island and some hidden gems you might not have known about otherwise.

Tenerife — the corner of Paradise on Earth, a stable mild climate, comfortable air temperature, a small amount of rain, and a wide range of tourist services allow you to go out to sea all the year round.

This island shows a rich culture and history. Its capital, San Sebastian, is the old port from which Christopher Columbus set off on a journey. In local churches, he prayed before the trek, and, according to legend, the city played an important role in the discovery of America.

The island is divided by sheer rocks into two parts: on the north coast is the valley of El Golfo, as if pressed by the finger of some crazy giant.

A small piece of land in the middle of the ocean, created as a result of the eruption of an underwater volcano, is now buried in the green gardens of indescribable beauty.

Lanzarote is an island-reserve of volcanoes. Impressive "lunar landscapes" is its main attraction.

Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is a favorite island of surfers from all over Europe, as well as a wonderful place for a peaceful holiday.

Gran-Canaria

The island is divided by a mountain chain into two climatic zones: a dry, always warm south with desert landscapes and a moist, cooler and green north.

If you're planning a trip to Tenerife, a boat trip can be an incredible way to explore the island's breathtaking beauty and diversity. Fortunately, the Nautal website offers an extensive selection of boats available for rent, with or without a skipper. Whether you're interested in sailboats, catamarans, motorboats, or other types of vessels, you'll find a wide range of options to choose from.

In addition, Nautal offers flexible cancellation or date changes on selected boats, allowing you to plan your trip with peace of mind. With up to 15 days before check-in, you can make adjustments to your reservation as needed.

Tenerife is renowned for its white sandy beaches, palm trees, and warm weather, making it an ideal destination for boat rentals. It is the largest and one of the most striking of the Canary Islands and is famous for its breathtaking scenery. While some may consider the southern resorts as "touristy," this is just a small part of the island. Venture beyond the hustle and bustle and discover the real Tenerife, with remote mountain-ridge villages, cultured port settlements, and charming ancient towns.

How much does it cost to hire a boat in Tenerife?

The price for renting a boat in Tenerife depends on the season, trip duration, the type of boat, the port or marina rented from, and whether you hired with or without skipper or choose to add extras such as equipment. The following are the average prices depending on the boat type.

A sailboat costs around €1600/day and €3,000/week for 11 people.

A motorboat costs around €360 for a half day and €490 for a day for 7 people.

A RIB costs €500/day and €415/half day in the low season and €960/day and €750/half day in the high season for 10 people.

A catamaran charter in Tenerife costs around €3,000/week and €500/day for 6 people.

A jet ski will cost an average of €150/day for 2 people.

A yacht charter in Tenerife costs an average of €2,050/half day, €4,200/day €26,500/week for 12 people.

Is it possible to charter a boat in Tenerife with or without a skipper?

When it comes to a Tenerife yacht charter, there are options for both guided and independent sailing experiences. If you're seeking a more immersive and tailored experience, renting a boat with a skipper can be a great choice. A skipper can guide you through the best places in the area, offer local knowledge, and ensure your safety on the water. This option is especially recommended for those who are new to boating or unfamiliar with the local waters.

However, if you have the appropriate licence or if there are boats available for rent that do not require a licence, you can charter a yacht in Tenerife without a skipper. For experienced sailors, being the captain of your own boat can offer a greater sense of freedom and flexibility to travel at your own pace.

What to do with boat rental in Tenerife?

Tenerife is a destination that truly offers something for everyone, from outdoor adventures to cultural experiences and vibrant nightlife. A yacht rental in Tenerife provides an ideal way to see the island's many offerings. You can spend your mornings relaxing on a secluded beach, your afternoons exploring small villages and trying local cuisine, and your evenings partying with the locals in a Latin bar.

A Tenerife boat charter allows you to venture freely to different parts of the island, giving you the chance to create unforgettable memories. To help you plan your trip, we've compiled a list of some of the most beautiful beaches on the island.

First on the list is Playa de la Tejita, located on the east coast of the island. This is one of the largest natural beaches in Tenerife and is perfect for those looking for a laid-back kitesurfing experience. The beach is normally deserted during the week, making it a great spot for a quiet escape.

Another stunning beach to visit on your Tenerife boat rental is Playa de las Teresitas, located on the north eastern part of the island. This man-made beach boasts easy access to restaurants with delicious tapas and fresh fish, making it a perfect spot for lunch.

For those looking for an active beach with plenty of people, Playa del Duque is a great option. This white sand beach has quaint colonial-style restaurants and offers sun-soaked hours of swimming and socialising.

If you're in search of a secluded cove to relax and listen to the waves, Playa del Bollullo is the perfect spot. Tucked away behind cliffs and banana plantations and close to Puerto de la Cruz, this beach offers a taste of authentic Tenerife.

For a picturesque beach experience, be sure to visit Playa Jardín, designed by Spanish artist and architect Cesar Manrique. This beach features a magnificent tropical garden with a man-made waterfall and striking black sands.

Finally, if you're a water sports lover, Fañabé beach is a must-visit on your Tenerife boat hire. This beach offers jet skiing, parasailing, paddleboarding, and more. Be sure to ask the boat owner if they include water sports equipment or if it's available for rent separately. Some yacht rentals in Tenerife even include equipment such as paddle boards and inflatables, so don't miss out on the fun!

The Canary Islands, located off the northwest coast of Africa, are known for their pleasant year-round climate. While the summers are generally dry and warm, the winters are mild with a bit more rainfall, especially in the northern parts of the region.

The subtropical climate of the Canary Islands means that temperatures remain mild and stable throughout the year, typically ranging between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius. This makes it an ideal destination for visitors seeking a comfortable climate, regardless of the season.

As a result of the favourable weather conditions, boat charters in Tenerife are incredibly popular. Visitors can enjoy the scenic beauty of the island's coastline and explore hidden coves and beaches at their leisure, with the warm sun and gentle sea breezes providing the perfect backdrop. If you're planning a boat hire in Tenerife, you might be wondering which ports are the most popular. Tenerife is known for its stunning coastline and beautiful beaches, which make it an ideal destination for sailing enthusiasts. Two of the most popular ports for hiring yachts in Tenerife are Puerto de los Gigantes and Playa de San Juan.

Puerto de los Gigantes is a beautiful port located on the west coast of Tenerife. It's a popular destination for boat rentals due to its stunning views of the Los Gigantes cliffs, which tower over the harbour. The port offers a range of amenities for sailors, including fuel, water, and electricity hookups, as well as restaurants, cafes, and shops. From here, you can easily explore the nearby beaches and coves, as well as enjoy activities like fishing and diving.

Playa de San Juan is another popular port in Tenerife, located on the west coast of the island. The port offers a range of services for sailors, including fuel, water, and electricity hookups, as well as a variety of restaurants, cafes, and shops. From here, you can explore the stunning coastline of Tenerife and discover hidden gems that can only be accessed by boat.

Aside from these two ports, there are many other ports in Tenerife that offer boat rentals and sailing experiences. Some of these ports include Puerto de la Cruz, Los Cristianos, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Each of these ports has its own unique charm and attractions, so it's worth exploring different options to find the one that best suits your needs and interests.

No matter which port you choose, a yacht hire in Tenerife offers the perfect opportunity to explore the island's stunning coastline and enjoy its subtropical climate. So why not set sail and discover the beauty of Tenerife from the comfort of your own boat?

How to get to Tenerife?

Getting to Tenerife by air is incredibly easy, thanks to the many airlines that fly to the island. With two airports to choose from, you can select the one that is most convenient for you. If you're heading to the northern part of the island, you might opt for Los Rodeos Airport, which is located near La Laguna. Restaurants in Tenerife

Casual dining in Tenerife:

  • Royal Bar: This eatery might sound like a rather expensive restaurant, but the name is misleading. Enjoy a variety of cheeses, cold cuts and waffles after a cruise around Tenerife
  • Pizzeria Fuoco&Pizza : You might not be in Italy, but you don’t have to miss out on enjoying a delicious and affordable pizza while vacationing in Tenerife

Best restaurants with a view in Tenerife:

  • Restaurante El Guanche: Traditional Spanish food meets fantastic service and stunning views. Could you imagine enjoying your meal in a different place than this after a long day out on a boat?
  • Lucky 7's Burger Joint : You probably already guessed it, but you can enjoy a very delicious, very juicy burger with a side of crunchy fries here. The views are not bad either!

Explore historical Tenerife

Tenerife is not just a magnificent place to admire the wonders this world has to offer, but also to learn more about the fascinating history of the island.

The capital of Tenerife, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, has a mix of modern and historic attractions. Visit the iconic Auditorio de Tenerife , a modern architectural masterpiece, and explore the historic neighborhoods such as La Noria and El Toscal . Here, you can also visit a castle that was built in the 16th century to defend the city against pirate attacks. Although only a small part of the castle remains, San Cristóbal Castle is an interesting place to go back in time and offers panoramic views of the city and the harbor that you wouldn’t want to miss.

Discover mystical Tenerife

While not located directly on Tenerife, Garajonay National Park on the neighboring island of La Gomera is easily accessible by boat. This mystical park and UNESCO World Heritage site is known for its ancient forests, misty landscapes, and quiet serenity. Hike through the park's trails to discover magical viewpoints, listen to the sounds of nature and feel immersed in its mystical ambiance. Just walking alongside these old trees and mystical mountains will make you feel like stepping right into a fairytale.

Sailing conditions in Tenerife

Tenerife offers excellent sailing conditions throughout the year, thanks to its favorable climate and strategic location just off the northwestern coast of the African continent. Tenerife benefits from the trade winds, which blow consistently from the northeast. These winds provide reliable sailing conditions, especially in the southern and southwestern parts of the island. The wind strength typically ranges from 10 to 20 knots, creating enjoyable sailing experiences. This also leads to a very pleasant average annual temperature of 23 degrees and makes a yacht charter in Tenerife particularly pleasant.

Along the coast of Tenerife , there are some ocean currents to be aware of, e.g. the Canary Current . These currents can influence sailing conditions, but they are generally mild and manageable for experienced sailors. Furthermore, Tenerife is known for its diverse coastline, which includes both sheltered bays and more exposed areas. In the sheltered areas, the waters tend to be calmer with smaller waves, while the exposed areas can experience larger swells. It's important to be aware of the specific conditions in your chosen sailing area.

How much does it cost to rent a boat in Tenerife?

A boat rental in Tenerife really doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, you can find some very good deals for boat charters in Tenerife all year round with Borrow A Boat. Although prices can vary depending on the season, the age of the boat and the amount of people travelling with you, you can find reasonably priced boats as well as more luxurious yachts that cost more - it all depends on your personal preferences and your budget.

In fact, Spain and the Canary Islands specifically are some of the most affordable holiday destinations in Europe. You might be surprised and pay less for a boat rental in Tenerife than a hotel room. On average you will pay 68 EUR per person per day for a sailboat rental in Spain . A catamaran rental in Spain averages at 111 EUR per person per day. A motorboat charter in Spain is the most expensive option for a boat holiday in Spain and will cost 179 EUR per person per day on average. Renting a catamaran or motorboat in Tenerife might be a little bit more expensive, but it also means that you don’t have to miss out on any amenities you would also get with a hotel booking.

What type of boat is best for sailing in Tenerife?

The type of boat you choose to rent in Tenerife highly determines what kind of boat vacation you would like to experience here. You can rent a boat with a shallow draft and explore the stunning beaches or opt for a sailboat and go on an adventure to experience the true nature of the wild Atlantic ocean instead. It’s all up to you, but your yacht charter in Tenerife should definitely fullfill all your wildest dreams!

Rent a catamaran in Tenerife

Pros of renting a catamaran in Tenerife

Do you enjoy the sense of freedom when sailing across the sea, but are equally pleased to find more comfort than on a regular sailboat? Rent a catamaran in Tenerife and make the most of your boat holiday here. You can either sail with the wind if it’s strong enough or revert to using the engine if it’s not.

Hire a catamaran in Tenerife if you want to have a more comfortable and luxurious experience on a boat. The bedrooms and bathrooms are generally bigger and there is more space on deck.

A catamaran charter in Tenerife is great for anyone who wants to explore all the stunning bays and beaches this beautiful island has to offer. Catamarans have a shallow draft, making them the perfect water vehicles to do so. You can drive closer to the shore, which also allows for easier access to the beaches.

Cons of renting a catamaran in Tenerife

One of the downsides of a catamaran hire in Tenerife is the fact that they are relatively big in size and more difficult to navigate. The extra space might be incredibly tempting, but you will soon realise that it will be a lot harder to find a spot for mooring at the marinas - and even if you do find a spot for mooring, you might have some trouble navigating your boat to your designated spot.

Another downside of a catamaran charter in Tenerife can be the fact that catamarans are often lighter than other types of boats, which can slow them down. You would certainly not choose a catamaran if you want to go on a sailing adventure where you need to drive for longer periods of time all at once.

Rent a sailboat in Tenerife

Pros of renting a sailboat in Tenerife

There are plenty of good reasons why you should opt for a sailboat hire in Tenerife . After all, many sailors who sail across the world opt for a sailboat as their water vehicle of choice. Sure, you depend on the wind, but you don’t need to stay close to any marinas in order to refill your tank constantly.

A sailboat charter in Tenerife is also great for anyone who cares about the environment and wants to sail more sustainably. Your sole source of power is the wind, no petrol necessary. This doesn’t just make sailboats more environmentally friendly, but also a lot more affordable. You don’t need to pay extra for fuel in addition to your bareboat charter in Tenerife .

Cons of renting a sailboat in Tenerife

A downside of a sailboat rental in Tenerife is simultaneously also one of its advantages. You might not have to pay extra for fuel, but you are highly dependent on mother nature. This could also mean that you might get stuck in the middle of the ocean should the wind suddenly stop blowing.

Another thing to keep in mind when renting a sailboat in Tenerife is the fact that sailboats are relatively difficult to navigate. You do need a lot of experience operating a sailboat and shouldn’t go out on your own if you don’t - especially, because the Atlantic ocean can be quite unpredictable at times.

Rent a motorboat in Tenerife

Pros of renting a motorboat in Tenerife

A motorboat rental in Tenerife is great for those with a tight time schedule, but an extensive bucket list. Motorboats are generally faster than other types of boats, meaning that you get to explore more places in a shorter amount of time.

Another great thing about a motorboat hire in Tenerife is the fact that motorboats are relatively easy to operate and navigate. You don’t need extensive sailing skills and experience in order to drive a motorboat. You just need to know about the different buttons, how to use a steering wheel and what the weather is like.

Cons of renting a motorboat in Tenerife

One of the downsides of a motorboat charter in Tenerife is the fact that motorboats are only fueled by petrol. This makes them one of the most expensive and least environmentally friendly types of boats you can rent in Tenerife.

What kind of boat licence do you need when renting a boat in Tenerife?

Anyone who wants to drive a boat in Tenerife needs to be in possession of a valid boat licence. However, there are a few exceptions where you can drive a boat without the need to carry a boat licence. Any motorboat that is shorter than 5 metres and operates at less than 15 hp and any sailboat that is shorter than 6 metres can be rented without a licence. However, you have some restrictions that come with it, including the fact that you can only operate a boat of this kind without a licence as long as there is daylight. As soon as night falls, you have to be back at the marina.

Sailing routes in Tenerife

Tenerife offers a variety of sailing routes that allow you to explore its beautiful coastline, nearby islands, and diverse landscapes. One of the nicest and most enjoyable sailing routes starts in Costa Adeje where you can enjoy a beautiful day by the beach or at the water park.

Day 1 - Sail from Puerto Colón, Costa Adeje to Playa San Juan: Start in the marina of Puerto Colón and sail along the southwestern coast, stopping at Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos for swimming and exploring. Anchor for the night in the peaceful bay of Playa San Juan .

Day 2 - Sail from Playa San Juan to Los Gigantes: Sail towards Los Gigantes, admiring the dramatic cliffs along the way. Anchor near Los Gigantes and spend the day exploring the area, including a visit to Masca Bay, known for its stunning natural beauty.

Day 3 - Sail from Los Gigantes to Santa Cruz: Head northeast towards the capital city, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Explore the city's historic center, visit the Auditorio de Tenerife, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. Spend the night in the marina of Santa Cruz.

Day 4 - Sail from Santa Cruz to Las Teresitas: Anchor in the calm waters and spend the day sunbathing and swimming in the crystal-clear turquoise waters. In the afternoon, continue sailing to the charming fishing village of San Andrés and spend the night there.

Day 5 - Sail from Las Teresitas to the island of La Gomera : Anchor in the picturesque harbour of San Sebastián de La Gomera and explore the town's historic sites and local culture. Alternatively, you can anchor in the beautiful bay of Valle Gran Rey .

Day 6 - Sail back towards Tenerife and anchor in the stunning Anaga Peninsula . Take the opportunity to hike in the Anaga Rural Park, known for its lush forests, rugged landscapes, and breathtaking viewpoints. Spend the night anchored in one of the bays in the area.

Day 7 - Enjoy a leisurely sail along the northern coast of Tenerife, stopping at secluded beaches and picturesque fishing villages. Return to Puerto Colón, Costa Adeje, in the afternoon, where you can relax, enjoy the marina facilities, and reflect on your memorable sailing adventure in Tenerife.

Amazing trip! The boat was brand new and comfortable. The communication was great. The weather did not cooperate on our day planned and once we got out there we were freezing, the captain took us back in and arranged to do our trip another day at no charge!!!! We chose our itinerary and the captain was more than happy to accommodate. Would definitely book through them again!!

February, 2024

We were recently on holiday in Los Gigantes, and decided to get out on the water one afternoon... and the experience was brilliant. Communication was seemless via the GetMyBoat app and we met at the marina at our proposed time. We opted to go without a Captain, and it couldn't have been easier. Our guide gave us a quick demonstration how to operate the boat (very easy)... and off we went. Our captain was nice enough to go out and check conditions for us earlier in the day and gave great advice where to go for smoother waters and great swimming. We had a wonderful afternoon swimming along the coast in the shadow of the Los Gigantes clifss. It was a great afternoon made even better by the help provided by our Host. 5*****

Missing Jay Slater: Chilling new theory he 'may be alive after boarding yacht in Tenerife'

A new Jay Slater theory has emerged which suggests the missing 19-year-old may have boarded a yacht in Tenerife. Jay went missing on the Spanish island on the morning of June 17 , with the hunt for the Lancashire teenager continuing.

The teenager is understood to have attended a rave at Papagayo nightclub in Playa de las Americas the night before he vanished with pals. He left the club with two British men to head to their Airbnb rental near the remote village of Masca on the north of the island.

Jay left the Airbnb on the Monday morning and has not been seen since. At around 8.30am the of his disappearance, Jay called friend Lucy Law to say he was in the middle of nowhere and was trying to get home with no water and 1 per cent left of his phone's battery. Most of the search efforts have focused on an area in the Rural de Teno Park where his phone last pinged.

A new theory speculates Jay's phone could have been thrown into bushes. He could have made his way down the nearby Los Gigantes cliffs via a safe route to a nearby jetty, it is claimed. Jay may have boarded a waiting boat and skipped the island, the theory adds.

Local guide Tami told the Mail there is a well-trodden path from Masca - near the Airbnb where Jay stayed - which leads to a secluded beach. A 14ft yacht was recorded sailing past Masca beach around the time of Jay's disappearance, it is reported. The boat mysteriously then vanished from electronic charts, the Mail reports , which is 'an unusual event' .

Local rescue teams speculate Jay left the main road in the direction of the cliffs, in the belief that it was a shortcut to the coast, where he had been staying. Spanish police focused their two-week search for Jay on ravines and mountainous terrains in the Rural de Teno Park, with mountain rescuers assisting the search.

On June 30, police called off the search on the ground. But on July 9, police insisted that several lines of enquiry were still being pursued.
