Aicon 64 Sport

  • By Jay Coyle
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

The Aicon 64’s swept-wing profile and reflective windows are very European, yet the interior cabin design accentuates open space and bolster seating, favorites of American customers. The yacht trims well and moves easily through the water.

In 2002, when I reviewed one of Aicon’s first offerings in the U.S., it seemed that the Italian company had just accomplished a most difficult hat trick: to deliver, as a new builder, a serious contender in a foreign market in turnkey fashion. This happy beginning proved to be no isolated success; since then, Aicon has prospered in American waters, raising the question of how they came to know us so well from so far away.

Five years ago Aicon was a relatively new brand in the luxury yacht market. However, the company had extensive design and engineering resources acquired in its 12 years of specializing in producing fine commercial interiors. Its client list had also included several large yacht builders.

Coming to America was not a step casually taken, according to Marc-Udo Broich, who established Aicon’s beachhead and is president of Aicon Yachts LLC in Ft. Lauderdale-the group’s American headquarters. Broich was born in Italy, but, and this seems key, spent much of his youth cruising the Mediterranean aboard American production designs. Migrating to the U.S. for a career in business, he continued to pursue his passion for boating. His experience soon provided inspiration. “I came to believe that there was a demand for an Italian-built boat designed specifically for the American market,” says Broich.

Impressed with Aicon’s commitment and financial strength, Broich established Aicon’s U.S. base in 2002. “It was tough being the new guy on the dock and I am sure some of our competitors wondered how long we’d last,” he now admits. The market was saturated with familiar European brands and a newcomer, no matter how appealing, was a hard sell. Broich persisted and sold his first boat in short order. “From that point on prospective customers seemed more comfortable with our product and our company.”

With a business plan focused on expansion and the support of a favorable business climate in Sicily, Aicon now operates three shipyards and has a workforce of 450 craftsmen. This year the builder will produce more than 60 yachts from 54 to 85 feet. There are currently 23 Aicon dealers worldwide, including seven dealer locations in the U.S. The genesis of its latest design, the 64 Sport, reveals in large part the secret to the builder’s success. “She is the direct result of input from our current American owners,” says Broich. “It’s really quite simple,” he adds. “We attempt to address the needs of our American customers on the drawing board during the design stage, not on the production line by retrofitting existing product.”

Broich feels that the 64 demonstrates what the yard is capable of and why his program is different. The 64’s modern swept-wing profile and shapely reflective windows are well balanced and, yes, very European. This seems a given for an Italian yacht. What is surprising is her layout.

The main cabin is open, not crowded with built-in furniture. The design is not so curvaceous that it is impractical; instead, it follows something of a minimalist theme. Bolster-style leather seating is complemented with such accents as frosted glass, stainless steel and a hardwood sole dressed with a custom area rug. Broich recognizes that unlike most European yachtsmen, Americans like to cook aboard as well as entertain. For that reason the galley is not hidden behind a bulkhead or buried in a cave, but is on the same level as the dining area. It also has the proper tools and space to prepare a meal.

An interior helm station has leather seating for two and space for an optional electronics package. The main cabin’s vent windows open with the push of a button, as does a door to the starboard side deck that is thoughtfully fitted with an electronic security feature and an emergency manual override. A 32-inch flat-panel TV intended to drop out-of-sight is a detail Broich must fine-tune stateside, but otherwise the translation seems complete-even impressive, considering the 64’s main cabin design is more or less semi-custom. “We are willing to do pretty much anything the customer wants as long as fixed tooling is not compromised,” says Broich. This includes a choice of woods, finishes and fabrics.

The lower deck arrangement is fixed, offering either a three-stateroom/three-head layout or a four-stateroom/three-head layout. In either case, the master stateroom extends full beam and has three-foot-tall hullside “windows” that open to allow natural ventilation. A compartment aft of the machinery space can be arranged as crew’s quarters for two or three and also serves as a storage and work area.

Our test boat’s interior fit and finish was first-class and the rather complicated joiner design was flawlessly executed and offered more than a hint of the builder’s heritage. There is plenty of headroom (seven feet on average) and enough real estate in the passageways and showers to suit the average American yachtsman, who tends to be somewhat bulkier than his European counterpart.

Exterior spaces follow the same uncluttered theme as the interior. A teak-soled afterdeck has built-in bench style seating and room enough for a table and chairs. A passerelle extends from a pocket in the transom with a push of a button. Stairs lead above to the bridge deck and aft to a water-sports platform with a hydraulic lift that is designed to carry a 1,000-pound tender-American style.

The space above deck, where Europeans might prefer to store a tender, is dedicated to pleasure and is arranged with seating areas and a wet bar with a refrigerator and an icemaker. A built-in barbecue grill and freezer can also be fitted. An exterior control station has helm and companion seating and space for a full complement of electronics. A sunpad area to port extends ahead of the helm-a European feature that Broich found appeals to his American customers. Skippers can easily keep an eye on the kids or their significant other while under way.

We conducted our sea trial in a light chop offshore of Ft. Lauderdale. The 64 is powered by a pair of 1,300 hp MAN diesels which have more than enough muscle to deliver impressive performance. I recorded a maximum speed of 34.2 knots, a bit off the 36 knots Broich expects; a little wheel tweaking is most likely in order as there was a slight bit of vibration. She managed more than 30 knots cruising at 2100 rpm and the engine electronics indicated a fuel burn of 104.5 gallons per hour. The relatively low decibel readings I recorded in her main cabin are worthy of note.

The 64’s hull form was designed in-house at Aicon and tank-tested in the UK. “Our boats are designed for the steep, short seas common in U.S. waters,” says Broich. With forward sections that are relatively fine compared to some European designs, she trims appropriately (approximately 3-5 degrees) at speed and moves easily through the water. I would imagine that in more challenging conditions her ride would remain dry and comfortable. Most importantly, the 64 is a pleasure to command. She is agile, predictable and has the feel and helm response that in American terms is similar to a high-speed convertible-very satisfying!

The 64’s machinery space is accessible from a large hatch in the afterdeck or via a watertight door that separates it from the crew’s quarters. Systems are not unnecessarily complex as sometimes seems the case on European yachts.

The 64 is built using a three-piece tooling system consisting of a hull mold, an interior and exterior deck mold and a bridge mold. The hull bottom is solid fiberglass and is supported by a fiberglass stringer system and marine plywood bulkheads. Foam coring is used to stiffen the hullsides, decks and superstructure. “Our boats are also RINA-certified class-A/ocean service which requires beefed-up structure and systems,” says Broich.

People love being listened to, and Americans are no exception. If you appreciate European styling but find European interior layouts hard to live with, Aicon’s semi-custom approach and the 64 are worth consideration. Complete with electronics and the most popular options, the 64 prices out at around $2,400,000. “The interior and exterior layouts we have created for the 64 might not be popular in Europe,” admits Broich, “but this is not Europe.” Indeed.

Icon Yachts presents 64m concept Mission

Dutch yard Icon Yachts has lifted the lid on a new 63.9-metre expedition yacht concept during the Monaco Yacht Show . Named Mission, the hardy explorer comes from the drawing boards of Bernd Weel Design and would be capable of carrying six tenders and RIBS, plus a submersible for three passengers and an Airbus H130.

The yacht has an innovative design that centres around modular elements which can be altered and adapted according to the use of the vessel. A representative of Icon explained: "The use of containers allows owners or special charters to adapt the vessel to their evolving needs by incorporating modular areas within or onboard the yacht".

Containers could include scientific research equipment or surplus water toys and tenders and "these dual scenarios can coexist seamlessly without altering the vessel's primary purpose". The containers would be stored in a hexagonal-styled mid-section of the vessel.

The 1,800 GT Mission has been designed with both private and commercial use in mind and can accommodate between 12 to 18 guests depending on the client. The vessel has been envisioned with a crew of 18,  plus six supernumeraries.

"The project embodies an 'experience-focused' design, meaning the vessel is designed to facilitate specialised expeditions, exploration, and yacht cruises," explained Bernd Weel, of the eponymous studio. "As for the exterior design, it showcases geometrical elements characterized by strong, defined lines. Our inspiration stemmed from outdoor products designed to withstand tough expeditions and SUV’s capable of carrying various cargo items. The result is a robust, 'go-anywhere' design with a contemporary and modern appearance."

"Mission represents Icon's commitment to innovation and purpose-driven travel," said Micca Ferrero, owner of Icon Yachts. "It redefines what an explorer yacht can achieve – from sustainability and modularity to profound experiential impact. We're proud to set new benchmarks and lead the way in supporting sustainable exploration."

Mission would have a cruising speed of 12 knots and a 6,000 nautical mile range.

Hello Folks, I am looking to purchase an Aicon 64. Hull completed 2009 but firsr sold in 2011 and splashed in 2012 due to Aicon factory closing during the recesion . Any feedback on the quality and overall experience? Thanks

As an Italian, I would put it this way: Out of 800+ boatyards that we have had, I can think of others whose boats were better built. Almost all of the others, actually...
So you mean Aicon quality is no good...?

Ivan G, I don't know anything about Aicon boats. Nada. I do read here and know that if @Capt J and @mapism say to look elsewhere that is enough for me. No questions. Not that you shouldn't ask. I get that a 2009 hull that didn't see service until 2012 may have an attractive price point. But the fact that the factory closed in 2012 has nothing to do with why it sat unsold since 2009. Boats don't sell because there is something wrong with them or they are overpriced. Is there any other reason boats don't sell? Again, I know nothing of Aicon boats specifically, I just don't think you are onto something. By all means, buy it if it the right boat for your intended use and your budget. Hire a local captain to do a pre-survey, pre- offer dock side inspection and go from there. That's the ticket.

Can anyone who owned or owns an AICON 64 can feedback?

The fact that so little information has accumulated on YF about Aicon (over 18 years) might be another consideration. Back in the 2000s, a yacht broker named Fernando Castro worked for the US importer of Aicon and he sold a few boats. He is still in the business but representing other brands now. You can search for him online. CJ and Mapism are respected members here so their advice carries ballast. Also check with YF member “Liam” who has decades of knowledge about Italian shipyards and boat builders.

Thank you YF. I just spoke with Mr Fernando Castro and he could not tell me anything bad about the built quality of the AICON boats. He actually said the opposite that the quality is good. I did ask him about the gelcoat finish quality and he said any boat may have issues with it if it is not maintained properly. Anyways the AICON I am looking seems to have full refit and the current owner put in over $150K in upgrades and repairs.

Just another thought: when I said that I can think of many other Italian builders whose boats were better built, before you ask, most of them never sold in the US. So, some of the names I could mention would mean nothing to you, and also if you would come across one of them that someone moved from the Med to the US for some reason, I don't think it would be wise to go for a boat which would make life much harder in case of any need of support. But for instance Ferretti, Uniesse and Azimut are all builders whose presence in the US is (or at least has been, for Uniesse) significant. And if I think of their flybridge models of the same vintage and size of the Aicon 64, I would definitely prefer any of those to the Aicon, in principle. Ferretti 630, Uniesse 65 and Azimut 62 are all boats which (in this order of preference, imho) are more worth considering than the Aicon 64.

Well, if I think of all the 56 I've seen, all of them a few years older than 2009, actually I wouldn't have thought to spend a lot (if anything) in interior refitting, fabric, and that sort of stuff. All of them still had the original interiors, and in reasonably good conditions. It's rather in the technical department, that I would have wanted to replace and/or redesign a lot of components, electrical system being an example but not the only one. Anyway, as I understand you seem to like the boat and to be willing to go ahead, so I can only repeat myself and wish you all the best! If you will feel like updating us on your findings, maybe also with pics, I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one interested to read that with interest.

No comment pro or con Aicon as I've only been on one, but I want to point out that there is another reason boats don't sell. 2008 / 09 was when the economy crashed. I don't like hearing about the gelcoat issue, but by 12 years old there's a good chance you're dealing with a paint job anyway. You know there won't be much support for these boats, same as with a lot of boats, but beyond that I'd say the boat stands on its own. Check it well, get a good surveyor and see where it goes.

WINING & DINING

Your holiday will include a wonderful mix of meals at island tavernas and succulent meals on board.

Menus aboard are created based on the local cuisine your personal preferences and the fresh ingredients we find in local markets on the islands — there is no standard menu. Every meal is designed to suit your dietary likes and needs.

Before your holiday we’ll ask you to complete a dietary preference to tell us what you like and dislike, and of any dietary restrictions, you and your guests may have.

We’ll also ask what you like to drink, and stock the yacht with your favorite beer, wines, liquors and soft drinks.

HOLIDAY PRICES

The holiday cost varies according to season and destination but starts from € 15000 per week plus expenses..

July is normally booked per week starting on Saturday. In low and mid season we can be more flexible with start and end dates and the duration of your trip. Her home base is Athens Kalamaki Marina, but ask us what the options are for your specific dates.

The holiday cost includes a skipper, chef and a hostess/cook and cleaning but excluding VAT. Two changes of towels and bed linen are included per week.

An additional charge is made to cover fuel and provisioning. This is called the APA (Advanced Provisioning Allowance) and averages around 20% of the holiday cost depending on the number of guests and your provisioning wishes.

At the end of your cruise, the APA accounting is finalized and you receive a refund or an invoice to make up the exact amount.

To confirm your holiday booking a 50% downpayment is required, with the balance paid one month before departure.

Our cancellation policies can be found in our terms and conditions of booking.

I never had the money or time to travel. But at 64, I'm done only seeing the world through photos and videos.

  • I grew up living paycheck to paycheck and working my whole life, but I always dreamed of travel.
  • At 64, a few years from retirement, I can afford to travel and I built up the courage to go alone.
  • My first trip was to Antarctica, and I plan to keep seeing the world while I can.

Insider Today

I've dreamed of travel ever since my uncle gave me a subscription to National Geographic magazine for my 8th birthday.

I still remember flipping through beautiful photos of Antarctica and dreaming about one day seeing such a wondrous place with my own eyes.

But travel was never really in the cards for me. I grew up living paycheck to paycheck in a large family in a small Long Island town. I've been working since I was a kid, and I never even left North America.

But I decided that, at 64 years old, my dreams have been on hold for long enough.

I finally have the money and time to travel, even though I'm not retired yet (I still have about three more years until then). I started my bucket list, and I'm determined to check things off.

First up was my dream adventure to Antarctica .

I mustered up the courage to book a long solo cruise

A cruise seemed like the best way to visit Antarctica — it's generally more cost-effective than flying — so I booked one that embarked from Santiago, Chile, this past December.

It was my first time leaving North America , and I was petrified of heading to South America, alone, for 16 nights.

But I also knew that if I didn't overcome these fears, I would only see the world through pictures and videos. I'd be depriving myself of my life-long dreams.

Fortunately, I summoned the courage and boarded the plane for the long flight to Chile.

Seeing Antarctica was as incredible as I'd dreamed it'd be

The cruise itself was quite the journey.

I bundled up and tried to maintain composure as temperatures dropped, and we sailed through the notoriously rough and rocky Drake Passage .

I felt like I was in a movie as the ship approached Elephant Island, awed by the majestic snow-covered peaks and glaciers and the enormity of where I was swept over me.

As we continued toward the Antarctic Peninsula, we sailed past magnificent icebergs of various colors, shapes, and sizes — some as tall as a 20-story building.

We even passed a research station, where the inhabitants came out and waved to us travelers as we sailed by. From my balcony, I saw penguins, whales, birds, and other sea life.

While stopping at the Falkland Islands, I took an excursion to a penguin rookery and watched thousands of penguins walking on glaciers and diving into the ocean.

It was pure magic.

The experience bolstered my courage and deepened my desire to keep traveling

The trip was everything I thought it would be, and more.

It made me more confident that I could overcome some of my fears of traveling to foreign countries, especially doing so alone.

Next on my bucket list is visiting other places my 8-year-old self dreamed of seeing, like Norway and Iceland. Later this year, I'm flying to England to board another cruise for another long-awaited adventure.

Although it took decades to get here, I'm glad to finally be pursuing my travel dreams — now, there's no turning back.

The 64 made an average top speed of 39.7 mph with a fuel burn of 125.2 gph with the diesels turning their rated 2300 rpm. Although her engines were making rpm, they seem to have been burning about 15 gph less than those MANs should at WOT. I suspect she may be slightly underpropped.
