New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

Roll on/off

This method of transportation relies on vessels with ramps for loading and discharging (Roll-on/Roll-off, Ro/Ro). Since most Ro/Ro vessels are designed to carry cars and trucks, there are limits to the height of cargo. However, even when they are on a trailer, many boats and yachts remain below the maximum height of five to six meters. The Ro/Ro method suits boats and yachts of up to 60 feet in length.

Out-of-Gauge

Liner services of container shipping companies are cost-effective and allow for weekly departures to all parts of the world. In order to be able to transport yachts on container vessels, the boats are secured in so-called flat racks. The racks have the footprint of a container, but they are able to carry out of gauge (OOG) cargo. This method of transportation is suited for motor and sailing yachts up to a length of 45 feet.

Lift on/off

The abbreviation Lo/Lo stands for Lift on/Lift off: The yacht is lifted out of the water with the help of cranes and then placed on deck of the cargo vessels, where it is carefully secured. For yachts over 60 feet, this is the best method of transportation. Since Global Boat Shipping is a member of EMS-Fehn-Group, we have direct access to our own fleet of seagoing vessels, which are perfectly suited for Lo/Lo transports. In addition, we collaborate with renowned heavy lift shipping companies.

Float on/off

In case of the Flo/Flo method, the yachts are transported by special submersible vessels that lower themselves for loading operations. Once the loading deck is underneath the surface, the yacht can sail into the dock ship all by itself. Hence the name of this method of transportation: Flo/Flo stands for Float on/Float off. Once the yacht is in place, the ballast tanks of the dock ship are emptied. The vessel rises out of the water, and the yacht stands – carefully secured – on deck. For the unloading, the dock ship submerges again – and the yacht can leave it on its own keel.

Smaller boats can be safely and cost-effectively transported in containers. Special equipment is used to carefully stow them in the boxes. Transit times are brief on most of the routes of container shipping companies. In addition, there are weekly departures. The containers have room for boats of up to 45 feet in length and 8,6 feet in width. Depending on their size, even several boats will find place in one container.

B/B stands for break bulk. The yachts are placed and thoroughly secured between other pieces of cargo aboard of vessels of container and break bulk shipping companies. This method of transportation suits boats and yachts between 40 and 70 feet.

Yacht Express: Design Features Yacht Express is semi-submersible and offers our unique float-on/float-off loading method. It has an impressive length of 209 meters (685.7 ft) and a beam of 32.2 meters (106 ft). Your yacht is safely accommodated between spray covers in the dock bay, which measures at 165 meters (541 ft) long and 31 meters (102 ft) wide. With a deck space of 5,115 square meters (55,060 ft) DYT is able to transport more yachts in one voyage.

The ballasting and deballasting processes are carried out by four main ballast pumps, each with a capacity of 1,200 cu.m/h at 30 m head. The other pump systems include two fi-fi/general service pumps, each with a capacity of:

• 100 cu.m/h at 80 m head or 210 cu.m/h at 30 m head
• An emergency fire pump of 72 cu.m/h at 70 m head
• A 200 cu.m/h ejector pump.

Cargo handling is facilitated by a 2 x 10 t crane with an outreach of 15 m.

Yacht Express: Propulsion Plant Yacht Express has a propulsion and maneuvering plant consisting of two 8,700 kW Wärtsilä 12V38 B common rail diesel generator sets, each driving two Lips azimuth pulling thrusters featuring cp-propellers via two electric motors of 5,100 kW each. Maneuvering is enhanced by a single 1,640 kW bow thruster with cp-propeller. Auxiliary power is derived from two Wärtsilä 6L20 common rail diesel generator sets of 1,020 kW, and emergency power is supplied by a Volvo Penta D34A MS generator of 610 kW, 440 V, 60 Hz.

The spacious bridge on this impressive yacht transport carrier features an integrated bridge system consisting of a UniMACS 3000 containing two radar systems with ARPA and two ECDIS, one conning and platform management system, and an advanced DPT 3500 autopilot/joystick system.

The Sophistication of the Yacht Express This sophisticated yacht delivery vessel is designed to have a service speed of 18 knots, meaning that a trans-Atlantic voyage from the Mediterranean to Florida/Caribbean with this ultra modern yacht carrier will be greatly reduced from 15 to 10 days! Owners can enjoy the advantage of extra riders on board to accompany the yacht during the voyage and they get to enjoy our state-of-the-art facilities. The addition of this new yacht carrier to our fleet implies an important step forward for DYT to improve the quality of services to clients that is based on safety, regularity and reliability.

Yacht Express: Launch completed The launch of Yacht Express was a major milestone in the development of the yacht transport and delivery industry, and Dockwise was proud to be on the forefront of it. On January 15th, 2007, the Yacht Express was skidded from its construction berth ashore onto four connected floating submersible barges, a process which took 6 hours to complete. It had been under construction since September 2005.

On January 19th, 2007, the barges were submerged and the Yacht Express floated off at high tide and moored alongside the construction berth for further outfitting and commissioning. DYT took delivery of the vessel in October, 2007, and our newest yacht transport service on this large and powerful vessel commenced.

Pricing and Information on chartering in Italy

In Italy, the high season generally starts at the end of May and goes into the first weeks of September. During this period, you will pay a premium due to improved sailing conditions and the high demand of boats. Depending on the type of boat you would like to rent, average prices range from 192€ to 400€ for larger catamaran rentals in Italy . For the majority of boats in Italy, you can rent them with a skipper or as a bareboat. Be sure to check each boat for the specific pricing for skippers. The average price varies on the kind of boat you wish to rent as well as the duration.

As described earlier, the high season of May into September will require booking well in advance. If your project is a yacht charter for the high season, you will have to book well before March. Like most popular destinations, much of the fleet is already booked by mid-March. Normally, planning should start in November or December to give you enough time to sort out your project. After March, more than 50% of the boats in Italy are booked. The numbers will fluctuate depending on the port of departure. You can still find a wide selection of boats and SamBoat is here to help you with that.

For motorboats for daily outings, availability becomes scarce when booking last minute. For dayboats, we suggest looking into the rental 2 to 3 months before the date of your project. Do you need a license to rent a boat in Italy? 

The legislation regarding licenses in Italy is a lot different than most countries in Europe. Depending on the type of boat you're looking to rent, there will be different laws applied. For sailboats in Italy , a license is required if you plan on driving your sailboat more than 6 miles beyond shelter. In either case, you will be asked to present your nautical CV detailing your previous experience in regards to what types of boats you captained and what waters you sailed. For motor boats, you do not need a license if the boat has less than 40hp. In the case that it has more, you will need to present a valid license to operate the boat. 

If you do not feel comfortable or do not have enough experience, you can rent a boat with a skipper. This way, the skipper will captain the boat and since they will be most likely a local, they will show you the hidden gems of Italy.
