The best guide on our whole USA trip. We took the Architecture tour where the boat meandered in between all of the incredible buildings of the city with the guide knowing EVERYTHING about each building; its style, age, height, architect, cost, purpose, owner ….. Quite brilliant! DrCumbrian / TripAdvisor
I've done several of the architecture cruises since my family moved to Chicago, and this is the best one yet! Allie K / TripAdvisor
If you only have time for one sight-seeing event while in Chicago, do this. We really have no great interest in architecture, but this tour came highly recommended and we did not regret it. Allice I / Oklahoma
My wife and I very much enjoyed the Chicago Line Cruise jazz cruise... My spouse said this was one of the favorite things she has done in Chicago since moving here in the past year, and I agree. I am a jazz snob, and ... I was very pleased with the music offered by the Geordie Kelly group. He's a fine jazz guitarist, and his band was great. Augie R / Yelp

How to watch the Chicago River being dyed green for St Patrick's Day

T his weekend, the city of Chicago will turn green to celebrate St Patrick's Day . Everything from the decorations, to the colorful crowds, and even the famous Chicago River will be the festive color.

Since the 1960s, the dying of the river to emerald green has become a beloved tradition and something that Chicago's Irish community as well as visitors to the city love to watch.

Every year, a team of six men on two boats dumps around 40 pounds of dye into the river, which turns it green for around five hours. The colorful process takes place on the Saturday on or before St Patrick's Day, with many people coming out to watch it being done.

  • How the tradition of dying the Chicago River green began

Chicago St Patrick's Day Parade 2024: Start time, route, map and important info

This year the parade and the dying of the river will take place at 10am on Saturday, March 16. Here are the best places to watch the Chicago River being turned green.

Chicago Riverwalk

The Chicago Riverwalk is perhaps the best place to view the river being turned green for St Patrick's Day, but also the most popular. Spectators will need to show up early to get a good spot. The portion of the walkway to head to for the best views is between Columbus Drive and State Street.

Columbus Drive Bridge

There will also be a great view of the team dying the river green from the Columbus Drive Bridge, which is a short distance from the end of the parade route at East Monroe Street.

St Patrick's Day Clover Cruise

The St Patrick's Day Clover Cruise, operated by Chicago's First Lady , has a number of cruises running on Saturday the 16th. The cruise will take passengers down the river as it is being dyed or after, depending on what cruise you book. The incredible experience lasts two hours and features amazing city views, live music and themed drinks.

Bataan-Corregidor Memorial Bridge

Naturally, the bridges of downtown Chicago will be a great place to watch the crew turn the river green. The Bataan-Corregidor Memorial Bridge is located at the end of State Street, crossing the Chicago River.

It will be a popular spot for viewing the river turning green, so it's recommended that you get there early to make sure you get a good view.

Michigan Avenue Bridge

Another bridge at which many people will try to find a free space to view the dying of the Chicago River is Michigan Avenue Bridge. Be prepared to stand for a while here as people tend to show up early to get the best view.

City Cruises Chicago St Patrick's Day cruises

City Experiences by Hornblower is a tour company in Chicago that offers a range of activities and excursions for tourists to the city. On St Patrick's Day, there is a cruise that takes guests on a journey on the water to witness the beloved tradition of turning it green.

Wendella St Patrick's Day Cruise

Another great cruise that gives you the chance to see the water of the Chicago River being turned green is the Wendella St Patrick's Day Cruise . Taking place between 10am and 12pm, there is music and drinks to get you into the Paddy's Day spirit.

The experience is strictly over 21s and costs $80, which includes three drink tokens.

For the latest local news and features on Irish America, visit our homepage here .

For many, the dying of the river is just as important as the parade. People turn up in their thousands to see Chicago turn green

Tre Dita ’s 44-foot ceilings and 40-foot windows are sights to behold and though the restaurant only sits on the second floor of the St. Regis Chicago, the panoramic views are spectacular. There’s also a special corner table set aside to offer a premier perspective. Perhaps, in time, this will rival what LondonHouse’s cupola has become — a popular destination for wedding engagements for folks of a certain ilk.

The restaurant opened on Saturday . The dramatic vistas at 401 E. Wacker Drive aren’t overstated inside the $1 billion and 1,198-foot skyscraper with 101 stories. Even on an overcast day, high above Navy Pier, and a short walk to the Mag Mile down Upper Wacker Drive, the views are stunning. It’s also close to Millenium Park where Lollapalooza annually sets up shop. Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises will do well to host performers at its restaurants, and Tre Dita is already attracting celebrities. They’ve already served cast members from The Bear and Chicago PD at a preview party. There’s a rear entrance and plenty of private space across two levels so celebrities can enjoy their meals in peace, or be seen if that’s what they want. Mayor Brandon Johnson has already visited, and so has former Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

Take a look at the spaces below.

riverboat tours in chicago

Bar Tre Dita has a separate entrance and opened in February. In some ways, it represented a soft opening for the restaurant with a truncated menu of Funke’s favorites. As time goes by, it will evolve into its own identity with a unique menu. The drinks are Italian-focused with grappa, amaru, and vermouth. There are 14 seats at the bar with room for 120 total in the space. Grab a seat and try one of 400 spirits stocked from across the globe.

The Restaurant

riverboat tours in chicago

The quality of the food is important, but Funke reminds us that much of the Italian experience comes from the environment.

“It’s where you are and who you’re with and it’s what you’re eating,” he says. “...if you’re sitting on the island of Capri, eating a caprese salad with the ocean breeze on your face, sipping a glass of white wine with the person you love.”

With that in mind, Lettuce worked with David Collins Studio to create an 8,600-square-foot space outfitted with gray Tuscan marbles, arched portals, dark-stained timber chequerboard flooring, walnut timber paneling, and wrought-iron light fixtures. There’s room for 130 inside the 3,200-square-foot dining room and a private room for 40 that sits above the main space. There are also five private rooms, each named after a horse that’s competed in the Palio di Siena, a race held biannually in Siena.

Evan Funke’s Pasta Lab

riverboat tours in chicago

Chef Funke is a perfectionist and he believes that pasta needs the perfect environment to consistently create outstanding noodles. His pasta lab, a fixture at two of his other restaurants, is a glassed-off space where staff can ensure dough has the ideal humidity and temperature to produce quality noodles. Of course, customers can peer into the workspace and see the staff at work.

riverboat tours in chicago

Funke is a proud Angelino, having cooked for Hollywood royalty at Spago in Beverly Hills. Funke’s passion for LA is neck and neck with his love of Italian cooking, and at Tre Dita, they’re honing in on Tuscany with a mix of unique pasta and steaks. Funke says he wants to spotlight more than Tuscany’s famous regions, like Florence, Pisa, and Siena. There’s focus on Pontremoli, Pienza, and Chiusi.
