Hale Kai - Our 58’ Offshore Pilothouse

Our 58’ Offshore Pilothouse proved its seaworthiness during its shakedown cruise in April 94 during the ‘storm-of-the-decade’ in Southern California inter-coastal waters. Our float plan called for cruising to Avalon to pickup family then south around the bottom of San Clemente out to Santa Barbara Island around the west-end of Catalina back to Avalon and then home to Newport Harbor.

Toby Hodges takes a look at all the nominees and the winner of the best family yacht category in the European Yacht of the Year Awards

There are many categories in the European Yacht of the Year awards, from the  best luxury yachts  to  performance yachts . But some of the most hotly-anticipated options come when it is time to choose the nominees and winner in the best family yacht category.

The European Yacht of the Year awards are selected by a broad panel of expert judges from across the globe. These are people who spend their professional lives sailing and comparing yachts, so you can be certain that the yachts which stand out in this field are truly the best of the best on the market for those looking to set out with the whole family in tow.

A crop of the latest 35-45ft mainstream production yachts, including the ultra spacious Dufour 41 and the smaller sister to the award-winning Hanse 460, plus a couple of less well known yachts, made for a dynamic grouping this year when it comes to picking the best family yachts 2024.

In this, the most competitive size bracket for volume production yachts, there was plenty to like, but two models stood out: the RM and the Bavaria. The former because it’s different and fills an interesting niche that crosses fast cruising with family sailing, from coastal and shoal draught to bluewater sailing ability; the Bavaria because it masters that mix of deck and interior space, performance and handling in a well finished package.

Winner of the best family yacht 2024 – Bavaria C46

The Bavaria and Cossutti Yacht Design relationship continues to flourish and produce standout results in its second generation. The C46’s modern, full shape brings vast deck and accommodation space yet manages to do so on a hull which really performs for its size, and rewards the helmsman with direct feedback.

During my trial we had a good mix of conditions and were able to push the boat, a voluminous hull which becomes reactive once the breeze threatens double figures. We were able to press it during a rain squall, hitting 12 knots in 18 under gennaker, and maintained lengthy double digit spells during some enjoyable sporty sailing. Bear in mind this is a single-rudder boat, yet it still didn’t overpower or lose its grip. It’s impressive, especially given the exceptionally low ballast ratio (20%), which shows the reliance on form stability.

“The chine is a bit higher than the C42 and we tried to make the wetted surface as small as possible,” Maurizio Cossutti told me during our trial. The keel is also comparatively lighter, slimmer and deeper for a sporty feel. It’s clear the German yard has really poured its engineering energy and might into this build – from design to engineering to finish quality, the perceived richness of the C46 stands out (although dressed with over €200,000 of options, this is still no mean feat in a mass production size and brand). So much so that other big yards may struggle to compete.

You could argue the Dufour 41 does that to some extent, but here the emphasis is slightly more skewed towards volume, while it doesn’t quite match the Bavaria for the overall engineering and finish quality. Felci somehow managed to swell the forward sections enough to allow the Dufour to be the first 40-footer to offer four cabins, including two doubles forward. We then learned in September that Dufour had signed a new contract to supply Sunsail charter yachts, which helps explain the draw of all this extra accommodation space.

The price for this is extra weight. Although equipped with a tall rig, the 41 only becomes reactive once the breeze is up to the mid teens, where it can lean onto a chine and employ its generous form stability. But for those after volume, max deck lounging space and a bright spacious interior for multiple guests, it’s a hard model to compete with at this size (full report in YW September 2023 and online).

On paper the Hanse 410 should perhaps have challenged the Bavaria more. It’s the latest in Hanse’s new collaboration with Berret-Racoupeau, follows on from the larger sister 460 which won this category in 2022, and shares that appealing modern hull shape. It showed respectable performance and figures, and proved easy to manage short-handed, thanks to the self-tacking jib and winches positioned to hand.

A halyard issue with the mainsail and a tangled sock for the kite curtailed my sail trials somewhat. We also found the cockpit quite busy, particularly the winch layout, although it is nice and deep for protecting its crew. It makes you query why you need two tables on a 40-footer – until you see them lowered to create sun beds, that is!

Stand out features from the interior were the number of stowage solutions, particularly on the two-cabin test boat. Offered as two or three cabins with one or two heads, the former provides a huge amount of stowage accessible from the cockpit or interior. There’s more in the galley and a multifunction space in the saloon, which can be a full length sofa berth, a proper chart table, or a standing desk with storage below.

Beneteau Oceanis 37.1

The Beneteau Oceanis 37.1 is also all about easy sailing and handling, and proved to be a fun, manageable sized cruiser, particularly the First Line option we tried, which increases sail area with a square-top main and flat deck furler. While certainly an accessible yacht, it perhaps comes across as a little basic. This is the last Oceanis in the new generation eight-boat range between 30ft and 60ft, so the focus is more on evolution than the revolution of its early predecessors. Hence the two- or three-cabin interior seemed a little unremarkable when viewed against the opposition.

The same could not be said for the RM 1380, particularly when you step down the companionway – which doesn’t really feel like going below decks on a conventional monohull as it’s so naturally bright in the raised saloon and helps you appreciate your surroundings. So much so it’s more like being on a multihull. The doorways are a little tight, but the double cabins are of good size thanks in part to the generous beam. The standard two-cabin layout has a practical utility space in place of the optional third cabin.

I’ve long appreciated the plywood epoxy technique RM uses for its hulls, together with the powerful form stability Lombard’s design brings. This comes with the choice of keels, including the shoal draught options of a lifting centreboard or efficient twin keels. We tried the latter and the result on the water is in keeping with the sporty looks: it’s an enjoyable mid-displacement cruiser to sail from the aft quarters. Then there’s the superb winch layout, which sees the primaries positioned inboard for use standing under the protection of the coachoof and sprayhood. For offshore sailing the open transom can be closed off with a platform. It’s not perfect, but the RM is intriguing and versatile.

Elan Impression 43

Another memorable interior is to be found on the Elan Impression 43. The rustic knotted oak finish is unique, the only option Elan offers and something the Slovenian yard wanted style gurus Pininfarina to maintain to identify it from the sportier ranges. Personally, I like the strong focus on timber as it helps showcase Elan’s heritage, but appreciate it won’t suit all tastes.

These mid size Impressions are the mainstay of Elan’s sailing range, the family and charter staples for the Med. This Humphreys-designed update has a modernised shape, but retains the older style and the hull rocker to keep a soft, smooth sailing experience. It’s rigged with a genoa or self tacker and two to four winches. Although somewhat unremarkable in terms of sailing performance, it fits its purpose, while the increased aft beam allows for larger aft cabins and a service tunnel between them.

In an age where we need to focus on making things last, my preconceptions of the Maxus 35 revolved around questioning the need for a lower budget Polish build. Why not just buy a proven second-hand yacht? That said, the Northman shipyard has done a respectable job on this, the largest Maxus yet, in terms of the build and finish for the price. It feels solid throughout, the interior is light and inviting and it is worth consideration as an entry level yacht with reasonable accommodation.

I can also see some appeal of the centreboard design for lake sailing. However there was little to take home with regards to the design or sailing experience, so my conclusions mirror my first thoughts.Best family yacht 2023

Best family yacht winner – linjett 39.

This is quite possibly the best boat you haven’t heard of. The 39 offers easy, fast family cruising and occasional racing in luxurious comfort and proves that classic needn’t be old fashioned.

Linjett exudes Scandi heritage: a third generation 50-year-old brand, it’s run by three brothers and has built 900 yachts from its Rosättra yard in Sweden, which dates from to the 19th Century. Its business model is based on long production runs – think evergreen rather than trendy. Linjett not only designs, engineers and builds its own boats, but services and maintains them too, with 220 in winter storage. It also now produces the high performance Shogun Yachts in carbon epoxy, which hints at the skill levels of its infusion techniques.

A telling result at sea is how quiet the yacht is. Sturdy and stable, it instils instant confidence and proved a delight to sail. We had some very pleasant upwind beats, pointing high, and some lively reaching, hitting double figures a few times while pushing it under 150m2 gennaker in waves. The Linjett is set up to easily short-hand it too, with two winches and a bank of clutches each side positioned aft in reach of the helm.

The interior is offered with two or three cabins and the latter we saw had an excellent layout, including separate shower/wet hanging compartment aft. Joiner work is first class, with traditional mahogany used as standard, or the more contemporary European Oak on the test boat.

This is a premium yacht, but you get what you pay for. It will surprise most and ensure everyone steps ashore smiling. See our full review next month.

The Dufour 37 may be shorter than the old 360, but Dufour was reluctant to brand this 37 as smaller because its modern, broadened hull shape has resulted in an enlarged deck space, cockpit and owner’s cabin. Felci has designed a clever hull that sails well with good performance for its (34ft) size. The aft quarters behind the helms feel compact to maximise cockpit size, but proved comfortable enough to sail from. The primaries are in reach of the helm and we liked the lightweight, low friction jib sheet adjusters.

The 37 is offered in Easy (two winch), Ocean (cruising), or Performance versions and with a two- or three- cabin layout. The test boat was the most popular Ocean model, although it had €100,000 worth of optional extras including sails, engine and bow thruster, resulting in an expensive yacht for its length.

For those who recognise the Bente name, we previously featured it in detail in 2015 when it burst onto the scene with an innovative and affordable new 24-footer (around 150 of which have been built in Poland). We then tested its 39 in 2019, a year before the yard then filed for bankruptcy. But it’s now back under new ownership with this really impressive and more refined Bente 28, again by Judel/Vrolijk.

It’s a fun yacht to sail, easy to short-hand, with sprightly performance, especially when reaching. The coachroof is part of the deck structure and proves crucial in providing light, space and headroom below in an ergonomic interior that has been very well thought out.

All in all it’s a great compact, entry-level cruiser, with a practical, well protected cockpit.

Powerboat Range

In North America, we might be considered by some to be a late-comer to the powerboat market, but in fact, we’ve always been a major force in it. As with most things, we have our founder, Benjamin BENETEAU, to thank. He was one of the first to put a petrol engine on his fishing trawlers in the early 1900s, thus changing the French commercial fishing fleet forever.

The Best New Small-Ship Cruises to Book in 2024

A uthentic. It was Merriam Webster's top searched word for 2023 and one that has dominated the travel vernacular in recent years. And while many would not necessarily associate the word with ocean cruising , the growth in popularity of small-ship cruises-particularly sailings with 500 guests or fewer-indicates that in the cruising world, passengers are seeking a more intimate, less crowded, and yes, arguably more authentic sailing experience.

Take expedition cruising , for example. As the number of adventure-focused ships and yachts has exploded in recent years, these cruises are no longer just about extreme voyages in polar regions. They are also about offering a deeper look into the culture, food, history, and environmental fragility of remote wonders of the world.

Although there isn't a huge number of new small ships being introduced, there are a few notable vessels that have either recently launched or are launching this year with a focus on the idea that smaller is not just better, but more sustainable, too. These new small-ship cruises bring with them some exciting and more immersive new itineraries to destinations both warm and wintry that have us ready to pack our bags and sail away.

Sea Cloud Cruises' "Sea Cloud Spirit"

• Suggested itinerary: Reset your mind and body on an eight-night sailing through Spain's Canary Islands and on to Morocco on a special cruise featuring experts in restorative health. Pricing starts at $4,895 per person.

What's more authentic-and sustainable-than setting sail on a tall ship where the sails are hoisted up each day by hand? Although not technically new (it was launched in 2021), the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit and its two sister ships, Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II , are upping their game in a push to introduce Sea Cloud Cruises' unique product to North American travelers. The German company has traditionally catered to German and British passengers. As part of its effort to expand its reach and appeal, Sea Cloud is adding wellness programs with daily onboard yoga and guest fitness gurus, in addition to special food- and wine-focused sailings with well-known chefs making appearances. Sea Cloud Spirit , the largest of the three-ship fleet with 69 cabins, was meticulously designed to pay homage to the original Sea Cloud , which was the world's largest private sailing yacht when Wall Street broker Edward Francis Hutton had it built in 1931 for his wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post.

The Sea Cloud Spirit combines the experience of decades of traditional seamanship with the modern-day luxuries of a private yacht. Cabins range from 172-square-foot single cabins to 300-square-foot balcony suites with soaking tubs. There's a large fitness center and spa, which has a steam room, sauna, and thermal area for two; indoor and outdoor lounges; and a main dining area, plus a more casual bistro. The action, however, is out on deck, where passengers can stargaze at night or simply gaze in awe at the impressive sails blowing in the wind.

Atlas Ocean Voyages' "World Navigator"

• Suggested itinerary: Go searching for Arctic wildlife on a 12-night cruise from Reykjavík, which sails along the eastern coast of Greenland and to Longyearbyen in the Svalbard archipelago, one of the world's northernmost inhabited areas and home to polar bears, reindeer, arctic foxes, and other Nordic wildlife. Pricing starts at $6,499 per person.

World Navigator , which sailed its maiden voyage in Antarctica this past November, is the third vessel to join the fleet of one of the newest players in small-ship expedition cruising, Atlas Ocean Voyages. The company's 100-cabin expedition yachts are almost identical and provide a hybrid of sorts between traditional expedition and luxury cruising. Cabins are spacious, almost all with balconies, desks, and seating areas. The bathrooms have glass-mosaic tiled showers with rain showerheads, wall jets, and even benches.

Everything on the ship-including the sauna with floor-to-ceiling windows-is designed to provide maximum views. The ships also have spacious pool decks with two hot tubs, a fitness center overlooking the sea, a spa, and water toys like kayaks and paddleboards. There's even extreme camping gear for those willing to brave an overnight under the stars in Antarctica. During North American winters, all three of Atlas's expedition yachts sail in Antarctica. With the addition of World Navigator , the company is launching more Arctic Circle cruises during the North American summers while also adding a host of new epicurean and cultural expeditions in South America, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and northern Europe this year.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's "Ilma"

• Suggested itinerary: Spend a little extra time in port on a 10-day sailing from Barcelona to Lisbon, which has three overnight stays, in Palma de Mallorca and Malaga in Spain, and in Lisbon, Portugal, one of Europe's oldest cities. Pricing starts at $10,600 per person.

Another newcomer to luxury small-ship cruising is the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, which debuts its second ship, the Ilma , this year. With 224 suites, the ship is larger than the original Ritz-Carlton yacht, the 149-suite Evrima , which launched in October 2022. On the Ilma , all the suites will have private terraces, including a two-story suite with soaking tub; the coveted, 1,000-square-foot owner's suite has a private outdoor whirlpool. Even the smallest suites are not all that small, at 300 square feet, and come with a personal concierge and 24-hour room service. The yacht boasts what Ritz-Carlton says is the highest ratio of space per guest at sea.

And you can expect to find the same meticulous service standards that you would find at Ritz-Carlton resorts throughout the world as the line aims to impress hotel guests seeking a luxury hotel experience at sea. Onboard are five dining venues, including S.E.A., a European tasting experience designed by chef Sven Elverfeld of Aqua, the three Michelin-starred restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton in Wolfsburg, Germany; Talaat Nam, featuring Southeast Asian cuisine and a sushi bar; and Mistral, a casual come-as-you-are alfresco grill with a Mediterranean-inspired menu. Light bites are served at the marina at the aft of the ship, where you can also hop on a borrowed paddleboard. Oh, and did we mention there are two outdoor pools, too?

Disappointing photos show what it's actually like to go on a cruise

• I took a seven-day voyage on one of the largest cruise ships in the world , my first cruise ever. 
• I found the reality of cruising didn't match my expectations from social media and promotional ads.
• I spent much of my time battling crowds, waiting in lines, and sitting on hot tour buses.

I booked my first-ever cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas in April 2022. The seven-day Caribbean voyage on a mega-ship took me round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to port stops in Honduras, Mexico, and the Bahamas. I expected breathtaking views of the world between relaxing swimming and sunbathing sessions.

But my experience didn't quite meet my expectations.

Instead, I sunbathed in a loud, crowded pool area when I was lucky enough to find a chair. I spent more time waiting in lines than I had anticipated, and I saw much of the world from behind other people's heads.

Here's an overview of the most disappointing aspects of my cruise, from getting to the port to sailing across the region

The disappointment started before I was even on the cruise.

Since I don't live near my cruise's departure city, my trip began with a flight and a budget hotel room near my departure port in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

When I arrived at my port city's airport, I waited 45 minutes for a hotel shuttle to pick me up.

This was the first of many crowded bus rides during my trip. Looking back, I wish I had called a cab — especially since the next morning, I piled into a hot bus with several other cruise guests as I headed to the port.

There was a long line to get inside the cruise terminal, and I should have known by this point that I'd stand in many more lines during my cruise.

Inside the cruise terminal , there was another long line to get through security. While I waited, I chuckled to myself as I read signs that said, "Adventure begins here."

Once aboard the ship, I was excited to view the ocean as we sailed away, but I was blocked by tall, thick glass and couldn't find a place to stand.

My obstructed view of the ship leaving Fort Lauderdale made me feel as frustrated as standing behind tall patrons at a concert. 

The ship was so large that I got lost several times during my stay.

But I found the maps on each floor to be helpful.

As I explored the ship, I was surprised that even a mega-ship could feel overcrowded.

While people seemed to enjoy themselves, many communal decks looked and felt like crowded malls.

The outdoor decks had 19 pools, plunge pools, and whirlpools accessible to guests. These spaces were crowded throughout the day. And even though there were rules against saving chairs with towels, I saw plenty of people doing it, so finding a spot to relax was stressful.

A Royal Caribbean representative told Business Insider crew members might remove items from lounge chairs after 30 minutes. Still, they must also consider families and groups who may be in the pool or going to the restroom when enforcing rules like these and must use their best judgment.

There were crowds and lines virtually everywhere I went.

From the buffet to activities like water slides and mini-golf, I felt like I spent more time waiting in line than enjoying the ship. For example, I waited in line for three hours to play a round of laser tag that was less than 20 minutes long. 

At port stops, I waited in lines to go through security every time I left and returned to the ship. I found this less annoying than the other wait times since it made me feel safer.

The lines continued at each port, crowded with others excited to begin their tours.

I often had to battle through crowds just to find signs for my excursions.

It was exciting to explore new places at each stop, though some of this exploration was from the window of another hot bus.

A Royal Caribbean representative told BI the cruise line worked with local tour operators for its excursions, so air conditioning standards varied.

And when I was finally doing the cool thing I booked, like walking across a suspension bridge amid the treetops, my view was sometimes blocked once more by everyone else who booked the tour, too.

I hoped to capture an empty image of this majestic jungle bridge, but it wasn't possible without losing my tour crew. 

According to a crew member I overheard, roughly 5,000 other people were aboard the ship, so I understand why the cruise felt so crowded.

I think that if I were to book a less crowded cruise next time, I might enjoy it more.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south. 

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

• Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
• Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
• Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
• Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
• Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

• Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
• Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
• Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
• Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
• Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Monasteries and temples

• Novospassky Monastery
• Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
• Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
• Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
• Cathedral of Christ the Savior
• The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
• The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
• Novodevichy Convent
• The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
• St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
• St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.

Yachtapalooza, 1-day Chicago boat show on Far South Side, 'perfect for aspiring sailors'

CHICAGO (WLS) -- It might be a chilly spring day, but hundreds are getting ready to set sail at the 25th Yachtapalooza at Crowley's Yacht Yard on Chicago's Far South side.

Grant Crowley is the owner of Crowley's Yacht Yard.

"This is a get spring going for us," he said of the yearly one-day boat show.

Crowley is knotting together different sailing organizations from all walks of life stretching Chicago's nautical community.

From hands-on seminars and demonstrations, highlighting the vital how-tos of sailing, to budget-friendly boats on sale, organizers say Yachtapalooza is perfect for aspiring future sailors.

"We have 12 seminars going on. We even have sail makers here teaching how to trim your sails," said Crowley.

Yachtapalooza also supports nonprofit organizations like No Salt Sailing that helps veterans heal from unseen wounds through sailing.

"Once you get out there and the sails are up, you turn off the motor, there's nothing like it in the world for tranquility," said No Salt Sailing founder William Shehan. "I've done meditation, I've done martial arts, I've done all those things and it is an act of meditation."

Mt. Carmel High School is also showcasing its newly-formed sailing program. They want to recruit young sailors eager to get on board.

"Just to see them accomplish things, watch them become more confident in what they do. Appreciating the value of teamwork, learning new skills, just the whole ball of wax," said Bob Szyman, Mt. Carmel Sailing.

The weather might be brisk now...but these sailors have their compasses set on a warmer horizon.

"There's nothing more sublime than being two miles out on Lake Michigan in a sailboat, beautiful day, sun's out and we've got our gorgeous skyline in the background. You can't beat it," said Szyman.

What is Moscow Known For? (18 Things It’s Famous For)

Moscow is the capital of Russia. It is also the most populous city of Russia. It is also a federal subject of Russia, and a major economic, political, cultural, and scientific center of Russia and Eastern Europe. It is located on the Moskva River in the Central Federal District, surrounded by four concentric rings of suburban districts. According to the 2010 census, Moscow has 10 million within its administrative limits. The population of the city proper is about 3 million.

Moscow is known for The Red Square, which signifies the historical center of Moscow. The square is famous for its Russian architecture and beautiful landmarks, including St. Basil’s Cathedral, the GUM department store, and the Kremlin walls, which all locals and tourists flock to. It’s known for its academic institutions.

The Kremlin

The Kremlin is one of the most popular sights in Moscow. The word “kremlin” means fortress, but when you see it, you’ll understand why it’s also been called “a city within a city.” The complex contains many different buildings, including palaces and cathedrals. The original fortifications were built by Yuri Dolgoruky (who founded Moscow) in 1147 as part of his new capital city on an island at the confluence of two rivers, Moskva (the current name for Moscow) means “place where two rivers meet.” It has been the official residence of Russia’s rulers since the 14 th century and is now home to President Vladimir Putin and his family.

The Red Square

The Red Square is the main square of Moscow. It is also known as Lenin’s Mausoleum and contains several important buildings, including St Basil’s Cathedral. The square was built on a site used for public executions since 1547. The name “Red” refers to the red tiles used in its construction from 1547 onwards. These tiles were originally laid down by Ivan III (the Great) to mark his victory over Kazan Khanate in 1438. The Russians have recognized the name. Today, it usually refers to Kitai Gorod (the historic core of Moscow) rather than just this specific spot.

Gorky Park is a large park in Moscow, Russia. It was founded in 1928, and it’s located near the Moscow River. The park is popular with tourists and locals, who stroll through its many paths and enjoy its amenities like playgrounds for children or an amusement park for older kids. Gorky Park offers more than just green space. It has several museums and performances where musicians perform year-round (and sometimes even nightly). The park has a history of being a place where people can gather to protest, and it was the site of many demonstrations in the Soviet era. Today, it’s still a popular place for political rallies and other civic events.

St. Basil’s Cathedral

This is a Russian Orthodox church located in Red Square in Moscow and one of the most famous landmarks in Russia. It was built between 1555 and 1561 on orders from Ivan IV (Ivan the Terrible) as part of his palace complex. The cathedral was constructed by using 2,500 tons of red brick and limestone with a traditional Russian-style roof made out of wood covered with green painted shingles. This has been a go-to photo location for tourists and photographers alike. In addition, the building has been featured in numerous films and television shows, including Doctor Zhivago, Indiana Jones, and the Last Crusade.

Moscow Metro Stations

The Moscow Metro is one of the world’s busiest, most historical, and most famous mass-transit systems. The first line opened in 1935, followed by another nine lines by 1955 when the entire system was completed. Today, over 200 stations on 12 lines stretch across the city from east to west and north to south. The names of each station are derived from nearby landmarks or significant historical events related to that area, such as Pushkinskaya Station (named after Alexander Pushkin), Mayakovskaya Station (named after Vladimir Mayakovsky), and Belorusskaya Station (named after Belarus).

Poklonnaya Hill

Poklonnaya Hill is a hill in Moscow, just outside the Kremlin walls. The hill was named after the Russian word for “bend” and refers to its shape, a long, narrow ridge that rises on one side and falls away sharply on the other. Poklonnaya Hill was once part of an ancient Slavic settlement called Kolomenskoye; later, it became known as Kozakova Sloboda (Kozak’s Settlement). Because of its unique location and its proximity to the Kremlin, Poklonnaya Hill has been an important military position since the 16 th century.

Embracing Religious Freedom

Moscow is a quaint city of many cultures and religions. The Kremlin, Red Square, and St. Basil’s Cathedral are all landmarks reflecting Russia’s rich history of religious freedom. The city has been known for centuries as a place where people from different backgrounds can unite in peace and harmony to practice their beliefs without fear or persecution by government officials or others who may wish them harm because of their faith. Museum of Cosmonautics

The Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum in Moscow, Russia, founded in 1962. It is located in the former Podvorye area of Moscow and focuses on space travel and exploration. The museum was initially established as a Soviet space exploration museum but has since become one dedicated to all aspects of space travel. The museum has exhibits, including Soyuz-5KV spacecraft used for experiments with living organisms, an Apollo Lunar Module (LM) module replica, and a Soyuz TMA-11M capsule model, which traveled around Earth for about five months.

The Plays of Anton Chekhov

The plays of Anton Chekhov are famous all over the world. They have been translated into many languages, and they are produced all over the globe. In addition to being performed on stage, they are filmed in movies and television shows. The plays were written in the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries. They reflect life at that time – Russia was an agricultural country with a large rural population; there were few cars or telephones; people lived close together in small towns or villages; most families had servants who could cook meals for them if they didn’t want to do it themselves.

Bunker 42 is a former secret military facility built in the 1960s, located in Moscow. It once served as a control center for missile systems and was abandoned in the 1990s. Bunker 42 was constructed during the Cold War when tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union were high due to their opposing ideologies of capitalism versus communism. The bunker’s purpose was to monitor and control the missile systems of Moscow so that they could be used, if necessary, by either side during wartime situations.

Moscow-Based Folk Dance

Moscow is known for its folk dance. Russian folk dance is a traditional art form that has evolved over the centuries. The first written records of Russian folk dances date back to the 17 th century. The Khorovod, Lezginka, and Cossack Dance are some of the most classic Russian folk dances. Russian folk dance is a unique form of art based on Russia’s culture and traditions. Moreover, this form of Moscow performing arts is not only a way to entertain audiences but also a reflection of the life of the people.

State Tretyakov Gallery

The Tretyakov Gallery is one of the largest art museums in Russia and the world. It was founded by Pavel Tretyakov in 1856, who donated his collection to the Russian public. The gallery comprises about 2,000 paintings and over 20,000 drawings and prints by Russian artists. The museum is located on Lavrushinsky Lane in Moscow. People worldwide come to see the collection, which includes works by many famous Russian artists, including Ilya Repin, Vasily Surikov, and Isaac Levitan. The Tretyakov Gallery is also home to some of the finest icons in Russia.

Gorky Park is a public park on the north bank of the Moskva River in the Khamovniki District of central Moscow. It was opened on June 28, 1928, and named after Maxim Gorky (1868-1936), who lived on Kuznetsky Most Street near the park from 1913 to 1916. The park has an area of about one square kilometer (0.39 sq mi). Its main entrance is at ulitsa Krymskaya 3-5 (Krymsky Val). There are several other entrances as well. Its main attractions include a Soviet open-air exhibition of industrial and scientific achievements, the Moscow Planetarium, and the Moskva Pool. The park also hosts many festivals and concerts.

Pelmeni Dumpling

Pelmeni is a type of dumpling that is traditionally eaten in Russia. They’re made from dough and meat, usually pork or beef, and served with sour cream and vinegar. Pelmeni originated in Siberia during the 19 th century as a way for nomadic herders to preserve meat without refrigeration. The name comes from the word pel’men’, which means “ear.” Therefore, the shape of the dumpling is often characterized by an indentation in the center that resembles an ear. Pelmeni is considered a staple food in Russia and is often eaten during celebrations such as Christmas or New Year’s Eve.

Ponchiki Dumpling

Ponchiki is a Russian dumpling made from dough and potato, which makes them quite filling. The onions add flavor but also give these delectable ponchiki their distinctive smell — some people love it, while others find it too overpowering. Ponchiki can be eaten as a snack or as part of the main course with sour cream. They’re popular across Russia and Ukraine and are often served at family gatherings like Christmas dinners or Easter lunches. If you are new to ponchiki, getting used to their smell may take a few tries. But once you do, they’ll become one of your favorite Russian foods.

Borshch Moskovsky

Borshch Moskovsky is a traditional Russian soup made with beetroot, cabbage, and potatoes. It’s served hot and extremely popular in Russia. The name means “Moscow Borshch” because cooks first prepared it from Moscow, who was sent to help rebuild St Petersburg after it was devastated by fire in 1737. Borsch is best enjoyed when served from large bowls with plenty of sour creams on top and maybe some dumplings if you so desire. You can also add meatballs for extra flavor.

River Cruises

River cruises are a great choice if you’re looking for a way to see Moscow. The Moscow River Cruise passes through the Kremlin, Red Square, and the Bolshoi Theatre. It also takes in some of Moscow’s most famous landmarks, such as St Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Tomb. The best time to take this cruise is during the summer when fewer tourists visit Russia’s capital city. However, if you’re looking for a more personal experience, you can book a private cruise. It will allow you to enjoy Moscow’s sights in peace.

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is one of the most famous theatrical venues in the world. It’s known for its ballet performances, which have been taking place since its opening in 1820. The theatre has been a focal point of Moscow culture ever since and continues to draw crowds today. The Bolshoi Theatre was founded by Prince Pyotr Golitsyn and his wife Natalia Dolgorukova in 1776 as a private opera house with rooms for balls, concerts, and dramas. This site remains active and is still used as a venue for performances. 

Russel Norman: SailGP not worth killing dolphins over as Russell Coutts signs up to war on nature

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but SailGP is just a boat race.

Yes, it is exciting as the foils slice through the water at up to 100km/h, but is it really worth killing dolphins for a boat race?

I don’t think so, and I reckon most New Zealanders’ values would align with that.

But then there is the other Russell, Sir Russell Coutts, SailGP chief executive.

Previously SailGP agreed with the approach of prioritising dolphins’ safety ahead of boat races, but now comments by Coutts suggest a change of mind.

What happened?

SailGP decided to have its race in Lyttelton Harbour, where there is a marine mammal sanctuary, because endangered Upokohue/Hector’s dolphins live there.

Upokohue/Hector’s is one of the smallest and rarest dolphins in the world and is classified by scientists as “Threatened - Nationally Vulnerable”, which means they face a high risk of extinction in the medium term.

They are only found in New Zealand. These are all good reasons to protect them.

SailGP was told about the problems of holding the race in a marine mammal sanctuary.

This was especially problematic due to the high speed of the boats and the presence of mothers with calves. SailGP persisted and a series of rules were agreed (the Marine Mammal Protection Plan) that would allow the race but protect the dolphins.

The most important rule was that racing must stop if dolphins were sighted in or near the racing area.

Only a fortnight ago, Andrew Thompson, SailGP managing director said of the Marine Mammal Protection Plan: “It’s an industry-leading example of SailGP’s commitment to the environments in which we operate.”

As the Department of Conservation has stated: “This decision to hold the event there was made in the full knowledge that protection of the dolphins from the impact of boats will be paramount”.

I don’t agree with having the race there at all. It is a marine sanctuary for god’s sake, but if it is going ahead it is good that the protection plan was agreed.

But on Saturday the dolphins turned up, the agreed rules were activated and the racing was paused - which was what SailGP agreed because of their “commitment to the environments in which we operate”.

But then Coutts lost it, and in a Trumpian outburst attacked all and sundry - DoC, the harbourmaster, the hapū, the scientists, the laws, etc etc.

His attack on rules to protect dolphins echoed this government’s war on nature, with its oil and gas exploration and fast-track laws for environmentally destructive projects.

So much for all the greenwash that SailGP cares about the environment.

As for Coutts’ gratuitous attack on Ngāti Wheke, thank goodness they stood up for the dolphins because it is clear SailGP couldn’t care less.

When it comes to not really giving a damn about dolphins, I used to think that no one would best George Clement, the then head of Seafood New Zealand, when he blamed the dolphins for drowning themselves in the nets of fishing boats. But Coutts sure has given it a crack.
