Montgomery 15 Bunk Length

  • Thread starter NicholasR

I am considering upgrading to a smaller boat from the O'Day 20 I have now. I am wondering what is the bunk length of a Montgomery 15? I am a bit tall and would like to know with confidence I could sleep comfortably before committing to the change. Nick

Information about and adventures on a montgomery 17, sailboat links.

Montgomery Sailboat Owners Group on Facebook – facebook.com/groups/330782353662726/

  • An active group of Jerry Montgomery design fans and owners.  Pictures, discussions, Q&A, and boats for sale.  This is the most active site on the Internet for folks looking for information about the Montgomery and Sage boats.

Montgomery Sailboat Owners Group Photo Site – msogphotosite.com

  • The site is filled with pictures of owner’s and the personal projects done to repair, renew and improve the Mboats.

Montgomery Sailboat Owners Group (MSOG) – msog.org

  • MSOG is the sister site to the MSOG photo site.  MSOG also contains pictures and projects.   Host of a current list of Mboats for sale (or is is sail?).  Also host of the email discussion group about Mboats ( registration link )

Trailer Sailer ‘Montomery Sailboats’ Forum –  forum.trailersailor.com/forum.php?id=8

  • The forum’s stated purpose is, “… an open forum for discussing anything pertaining to Montgomery sailboats.”  For the past 2-3 years the forum hasn’t been much used.  Most activity now happens in the Facebook group.

Sage Marine –

  •  Sage Marine was the builder of the new Jerry Montgomery pocket cruiser designs: Sage 17, Sage 15 & SageCat.  Production ceased in late 2018.   The www-site, forum and blog closed in 2020 between 2020 and 2021.

NOAA Tides and Currents  –  tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov

  •  Tides in Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands can range 15 feet or more, and currents can run over five or six knots.

SailFlow ‘ weather where you sail’ –  www.sailflow.com

  •  Nice to see wind predictions and patterns.  Helpful in planning a trip and to review how the larger weather pattern interacts with Puget Sound’s many channels, bays and coves.

Magic Harbor  – web.archive.org/web/20040919110718/http://donberry.com:80/harbor2/harbor2.html

  •  This site comes from the ‘early days’ of the Internet and is now only available through the Internet Archive Wayback Machine.   The above link goes to a collection of short stories by Don Berry about living as a ‘water rat’ on Puget Sound.  I found this ‘book’ back in 1995 or 1996 when I was ‘exploring the Internet.’  This writing has since been a favorite.  Here is more about Don’s life works:  web.archive.org/web/20040615014328/http://www.donberry.com

Northwest Potters – nwpotters.org

  •  Another group of small trailerable sailboat owners … this one made up of folks owning the West Wright Potter (aka, ‘The Potter’).

Small Craft Advisor – smallcraftadvisor.com

  •  This is the www-site of the magazine of the same name.  The mag is a great resource for those that like trailerable boats (focus on sailboats).  I am a writer for SCA and am the designated ‘keeper of the calendar’.
  • The magazine transitioned from printed on on-line only publication the end of 2022 (Nov/Dec ’22 Issue 138 was the last printed version).  The on-line site is at smallcraftadvisor.substack.com/.

Trailer Sailor – trailersailor.com

  •  A great site for general information on trailerable sailboats of all types.

The Simple Sailor – thesimplesailor.com/index.html

  • Site by “Roger Taylor, skipper of a little junk-rigged Corribee called Mingming . This is my website. Only time will tell what it will be about, but initially it will be about Mingming , her voyages and the principles of Simple Sailing that underpin my approach to ocean voyaging.”  Roger has now published two books about his small boat travels,  Voyages of a Simple Sailor and  Mingming & the Art of Minimal Ocean Sailing .  Both books are entertaining reading.

Keep Turning Left – keepturningleft.co.uk/index.php

  • “[T]he story of one mans slow odyssey around the UK. 30 months of sailing has resulted in travelling from the Isle of Wight to Wells in North Norfolk – so I am aiming for one of the slowest circumnavigations in UK history.”
  • Dylan Winter has mostly been silent since mid-2021.  He was posting some videos showing his new-to-him Fisher 25 motor-sailer and is preparations for more sailing.  Mid-2022 those videos were taken down and he hasn’t posting a thing.  I’m hopeful he will share information about what he has done during the 2022 sailing season – I believe he was returning to the West and SW shores of Scotland.

ShortyPen’s Saiboat Pocket Cruiser List – www.shortypen.com/boats/pocket

  • The most comprehensive list of small ‘cruising’ sailboats I have found on the internet.   “There are many pocket cruiser sailboats that have almost no representation on the internet. Some were only manufactured for a few years and then the design was discontinued and others had their companies go out of business. This is my comprehensive list and directory of all the fiberglass production sailboats that have a cabin with a door or drop boards, are less than 20 feet long, less than 8′ wide, and weigh less than 2000 pounds.”

Boat Owners Association of the United States – boatus.com

  • Overall a good site for ‘boat things’.  Focus is powerboats.  The Association’s boat insurance provides great coverage at very reasonable rates.  When I shopped for Sweet Pea’s insurance I found BoatUS costs to be 1/4 other insurance companies’.

Bearing Buddy – bearingbuddy.com

  • These are a must have for your boat’s trailer.

Two Crawford County murder convictions, one burglary conviction upheld by Court of Appeals

Two murder convictions and one burglary conviction in Crawford County were upheld by the Third District Court of Appeals.

In the first case, Robert W. Pinyerd, 42, was found guilty of the shooting death of Cynthia Jo Heath, 47, by a jury of five women and seven men in April 2023 after a weeklong trial. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole plus three years for a gun specification, to be served consecutively, for aggravated murder.

The case was investigated by the Crestline Police Department and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI).

Pinyerd alleged in his appeal that his due process rights were violated when the state was permitted to have a witness discovered one week before the trial testify, according to a release from Crawford County Prosecutor Matthew Crall. The appellate court found that the trial court took sufficient steps to safeguard the defendant’s rights and the state had acted in good faith in providing information to the defendant.

Pinyerd also contested that the weight of the evidence was insufficient to warrant a conviction. The Appellate Court did not agree and the conviction was affirmed.

In a murder case that also occurred in Crestline, Jacqueline D. Montgomery, 44, was found guilty by a jury of one count of murder, an unspecified felony, in April 2023.

She was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison on the murder conviction, the same sentence her husband, Timothy Montgomery, received after he was convicted of the same offense during a jury trial on two counts of murder. The charges stemmed from their roles in the beating death of Michael "Mikey" Benedict in October 2021.

Benedict, the 40-year-old father of six, was found unconscious after a beating that occurred on Union Street between South Wiley Street and Clink Boulevard. Benedict never regained consciousness after the assault took place and was declared brain dead over a week before he died Nov. 4, 2021. He had suffered from multiple skull fractures and both of his jaws were broken along with his left ankle.

Jacqueline and Timothy Montgomery, along with their neighbor, Cameron Davis, 32, were indicted by a Crawford County grand jury on murder charges in November 2021. Davis testified against the Montgomerys during their trials as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. He was sentenced to 20-25 years in prison but may receive early release after serving at least 10 years.

In her appeal, Crall said Jacqueline Montgomery alleged her rights were violated because she was limited in discussing the amount of prison time received by Davis before he testified against her.

The appeals court found the trial court did not abuse its discretion in doing so and there was sufficient evidence to warrant upholding the conviction.

Timothy Montgomery’s conviction was affirmed by the Third District Court of Appeals earlier this year.

In the third case before the Third District Court of Appeals, Juan A. Rosas, 29, of Bucyrus, appealed his prison sentence of four-six years for a second-degree burglary conviction. He alleged he did not receive effective assistance of counsel because his attorney had not filed a motion to suppress evidence related to a photo lineup administration.

Crall said since the trial court did not allow testimony regarding the lineup, the Appellate Court did not find any prejudice in not filing the motion in question.

Rosas also contended the trial court should have granted a mistrial but since the issue at question was never presented to the jury, Crall said Rosas could not show any prejudice. As a result, his appeal was denied, and his conviction was affirmed.

Crall said in all three cases, his office defended the rulings of Judge Sean Leuthold who conducted all three trials.

“Assistant Prosecutor Dan Stanley handled all three appeals and argued them well. He has established a high standard of excellence at the appellate level. Few counties can say they have successfully defended three verdicts of this level and received favorable results all on the same day,” Crall said. “Justice was served through the investigation, trial and appeal of this trio of cases. Crawford County is a better place because of this work by law enforcement, the prosecutor’s office, and the court.”

Woman drowns in Lake Conroe after falling off boat on July 4th holiday, Montgomery Co. Pct. 1 says

KTRK logo

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A woman drowned after she fell off a boat on Lake Conroe on the July Fourth holiday, according to officials.

The Montgomery County Pct. 1 Constable's Office said officials were called to the Scott's Ridge Boat Ramp, north of FM-1097, just before 9 p.m. Thursday in reference to a woman who had fallen off a boat.

Several people jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue the woman, but they were unsuccessful, 911 callers told dispatch.

After about two and a half hours of searching, the woman's body was found by rescue and recovery divers around 11:30 p.m., according to Pct. 1.

"Constable Philip Cash expresses his deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim and reminds everyone on Lake Conroe to utilize life safety equipment whenever you are on a boat or in the water," Pct. 1 said in a statement. "No matter your expertise in the water, personal floatation devices (PFD's or life jackets) save lives."

The woman name has not yet been released.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens are leading the investigation into her death.

Which outboard for my Montgomery 17?

montgomery sailboat forum

  • Add to quote

Just brought home my dream boat today, a 1983 Montgomery 17. I have been looking and looking for this exact boat to come up for sale in my area for over a year and I finally snagged one although it was 9 hrs away but it was well worth it. http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/...y 17/2011-03-25_17-52-11_462.jpg?t=1301118523 I bought this thing for $2600 with everything except an outboard. The previous owner had big plans for the boat but was unable to use it. He had spent a small fortune at West Marine on alot of great gear that I would have needed to buy, needless to say most of it is still in it's packaging. I totalled up the new stuff today from WM's prices and it came out to be right at $2400 worth of quality gear. Talk about a deal........ Anyways, I need to buy an outboard and I am looking at Mercury's and Yamahas right now. I believe I want a 4hp, four stroke of course, with an alternator and a long shaft. The Mercury is $1240 and the Yamy $1100. Honda's just seem to expensive. I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on the two? How about customer service and avaliability of spare parts for the two? Cant decide which one is best.........

Tough one. the only experience I've had with Yamaha is with their offroad bikes ( many yrs ) quality is up there, maybe more so than Merc, Parts may be an issue soon no matter what OB ya get with the problems Japan is having. I'd probably go with Yamaha cuz I would need parts less often

Cool boat BTW, congrats

Yamaha makes a quality outboard engine. We commute daily by boat into town and run a Yamaha 40 on our 14 ft run about. Most of the daily commuters at the marina running outboards use Yamaha's. They have a good dealer network and also make a high thrust version of some of their engines specifically for sailboats. We also run a Yamaha 9.9 hp on our Catalina 27. I cant speak to the Mercury's

The April Yachting Monthly, a UK magazine, has a review of 5 HP outboard motors, and rated Suzuki "best on test." However, the test did not include Mercury.

Such a small outboard in 4-stroke is not what I would recommend in general. If keeping it on the transom permanently, perhaps, but if as 'stow away' the old 2-strokes have less risks of oil spill. Even vibration may be a problem running at full throttle. Charging, if you manage to find one with charging is less than a joke, a 60W solar panel will probably do better even a winter night! I would have considered a small Tohatsu provided you have a decent dealer in vicinity.

Sweet, I used to have a 1981 Monty 17. Mine had an old Johnson Sailhorse 6 hp. It was more than adequate. I hope to buy another Monty some day, You'll like that little boat,

Thank you all for the replies. haffiman, I have no experience with the output of an alternator on such a small motor. It can be totally pointless, or can it? The alternator that comes on it puts out 6A at wide open throttle. They do have an option for a high output alternator though, maybe I should go that route? I will have a solar panel of some sort but I figured an alternator on the motor would be another reliable source of power, I am not asking for much at all though because the boat will have minimal power needs.

Outboard alternators is not intended for charging for consumption. mainly to 'top-up' a starter battery. A small solar that may be connected even when you do not use the boat is far better. A 30-40 W (3 Amp) connected even when you do not use the boat will keep a 60-90AH battery reasonably well charged, an outboard will have to run around 8-10 hrs/day to give the same charge. The only 'advantage' may be that together, both solar and outboard, may be able to start charging a 'dead' battery.

I have a Yamaha 4hp 4-stroke and I wouldn't sell it to a friend. Noisy, vibrates and cantankerous to start when warm. I too would recommend a two stroke, maybe a 6hp if they are twin cylinder (much smoother than a single). No oil changes, not finicky about fuel, much lighter and as simple as can be. Nissan and Tohatsu are the exact same engines, both are great and Yamaha too (I bought a used Yamaha two stroke to replace the new Yamaha 4 stroke). Have fun with your new boat!

So it sounds like I may not need an alternator then since a solar panel can give me more? My intentions for the boat are typical daysails, weekend trips about once a month, and a trip or two a year lasting 2 weeks or more. I do not have my power consumption detailed at the moment but I will be running the following: LED Nav Lights LED Cabin Lights Small fan at night VHF Radio (havent decided between a couple or handhelds vs a mounted one and a handheld) GPS/Chartplotter (not for extended periords, only to double check position) Small radio, not very much I would imagine Charging batteries for camera equipment and possibly a small laptop I am very anal about being efficient and using things as little as possible so my power usage on all these things will be minimal. I haven't decided about my battery bank yet, it currently has a new 12v deepcycle RV standard flooded battery. I am not sure if I will change or ad another battery, still working on that. This may be obvious, but I do not need a cranking battery since it will be a little 4hp outboard. I currently have a 400mA, 15v (6W) solar panel that is suposed to provide 2Amp-hrs a day. How will that compare to the alternator?

The panel you have is mainly suitable for maintaining charge in the battery and will probably not add much. However compared to the outboard charge it will probably give more in a 12 hours day sailing than your outboard will give in 2 hours running at top speed. From what you stated above, the biggest consumption might be from your laptop.

I haveowned both. 8 HP Merc and 4 HP Yamaha. Both were good. Alternators on these motors are not meant to be used as you ntend. Very little juce.

Photos: Here's how the Montgomery area celebrated Fourth of July

The Montgomery area celebrated Independence Day on Thursday with parades, music and even a cardboard boat race.

After a 9 a.m. parade in Prattville, boaters set sail in Pratt Park with their best cardboard designs. It was the 20th annual race , which has become an unlikely tradition in the area.

The annual Cloverdale-Idlewild Fourth of July parade in Montgomery has lasted a bit longer − it's been around since 1975 . This year's sun-splashed parade took to the streets of the Montgomery neighborhood built around the theme of the presidential election of 1824.

Montgomery's downtown celebration at Riverfront Park was shortened by rain but still featured a performance by Selma native Asher Havon, who won the most recent season of NBC's The Voice .

If you are 7'6" it will be a bit tight. I liked that the mast was deck stepped. No pole to separate you from your close friend. The Sage 15 is built similar to the Montgomery 15.
