Sailing used to be considered as a rather sedate pastime. But in the past few years, the world of yacht racing has been revolutionised by the arrival of hydrofoil-supported catamarans, known as “foilers”. These vessels, more akin to high-performance aircraft than yachts, combine the laws of aerodynamics and hydrodynamics to create vessels capable of speeds of up to 50 knots, which is far faster than the wind propelling them.

An F50 catamaran preparing for the Sail GP series recently even broke this barrier, reaching an incredible speed of 50.22 knots (57.8mph) purely powered by the wind. This was achieved in a wind of just 19.3 knots (22.2mph). F50s are 15-metre-long, 8.8-metre-wide hydrofoil catamarans propelled by rigid sails and capable of such astounding speeds that Sail GP has been called the “ Formula One of sailing ”. How are these yachts able to go so fast? The answer lies in some simple fluid dynamics.

As a vessel’s hull moves through the water, there are two primary physical mechanisms that create drag and slow the vessel down. To build a faster boat you have to find ways to overcome the drag force.

The first mechanism is friction. As the water flows past the hull, a microscopic layer of water is effectively attached to the hull and is pulled along with the yacht. A second layer of water then attaches to the first layer, and the sliding or shearing between them creates friction.

On the outside of this is a third layer, which slides over the inner layers creating more friction, and so on. Together, these layers are known as the boundary layer – and it’s the shearing of the boundary layer’s molecules against each other that creates frictional drag.

f50 catamaran design

A yacht also makes waves as it pushes the water around and under the hull from the bow (front) to the stern (back) of the boat. The waves form two distinctive patterns around the yacht (one at each end), known as Kelvin Wave patterns.

These waves, which move at the same speed as the yacht, are very energetic. This creates drag on the boat known as the wave-making drag, which is responsible for around 90% of the total drag. As the yacht accelerates to faster speeds (close to the “hull speed”, explained later), these waves get higher and longer.

These two effects combine to produce a phenomenon known as “ hull speed ”, which is the fastest the boat can travel – and in conventional single-hull yachts it is very slow. A single-hull yacht of the same size as the F50 has a hull speed of around 12 mph.

However, it’s possible to reduce both the frictional and wave-making drag and overcome this hull-speed limit by building a yacht with hydrofoils . Hydrofoils are small, underwater wings. These act in the same way as an aircraft wing, creating a lift force which acts against gravity, lifting our yacht upwards so that the hull is clear of the water.

f50 catamaran design

While an aircraft’s wings are very large, the high density of water compared to air means that we only need very small hydrofoils to produce a lot of the important lift force. A hydrofoil just the size of three A3 sheets of paper, when moving at just 10 mph, can produce enough lift to pick up a large person.

This significantly reduces the surface area and the volume of the boat that is underwater, which cuts the frictional drag and the wave-making drag, respectively. The combined effect is a reduction in the overall drag to a fraction of its original amount, so that the yacht is capable of sailing much faster than it could without hydrofoils.

The other innovation that helps boost the speed of racing yachts is the use of rigid sails . The power available from traditional sails to drive the boat forward is relatively small, limited by the fact that the sail’s forces have to act in equilibrium with a range of other forces, and that fabric sails do not make an ideal shape for creating power. Rigid sails, which are very similar in design to an aircraft wing, form a much more efficient shape than traditional sails, effectively giving the yacht a larger engine and more power.

As the yacht accelerates from the driving force of these sails, it experiences what is known as “ apparent wind ”. Imagine a completely calm day, with no wind. As you walk, you experience a breeze in your face at the same speed that you are walking. If there was a wind blowing too, you would feel a mixture of the real (or “true” wind) and the breeze you have generated.

The two together form the apparent wind, which can be faster than the true wind. If there is enough true wind combined with this apparent wind, then significant force and power can be generated from the sail to propel the yacht, so it can easily sail faster than the wind speed itself.

f50 catamaran design

The combined effect of reducing the drag and increasing the driving power results in a yacht that is far faster than those of even a few years ago. But all of this would not be possible without one further advance: materials. In order to be able to “fly”, the yacht must have a low mass, and the hydrofoil itself must be very strong. To achieve the required mass, strength and rigidity using traditional boat-building materials such as wood or aluminium would be very difficult.

This is where modern advanced composite materials such as carbon fibre come in. Production techniques optimising weight, rigidity and strength allow the production of structures that are strong and light enough to produce incredible yachts like the F50.

The engineers who design these high-performance boats (known as naval architects ) are always looking to use new materials and science to get an optimum design. In theory, the F50 should be able to go even faster.

World’s coolest yachts: F50

Yachting World

  • May 28, 2021

We ask top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our times. This month Nathan Outteridge nominates the foiling cat used in SailGP, the F50

f50 catamaran design

“Without question the SailGP F50 is the best boat that I have ever sailed. The headline top speeds of over 50 knots are impressive, but there is so much more to these incredible boats.

“The boats are inherently unstable, and so require constant adjustment of the foils to keep them flying at optimum levels. Initially the boats were very hard to sail; the foils are very unstable and not as forgiving as were used in the Bermuda America’s Cup , but with the help of sophisticated computer aided flight controls and user-friendly flight controller hardware the boats are now far easier to sail, which makes for better, closer racing.

“By having battery power banks on board, the sailors effectively have unlimited power on demand. The boats can be pushed harder and sailed more accurately due to this unlimited power, and as a result the sailors’ skills become more critical and racing becomes more of the focus.

“There are no excuses on these boats.”

Innovative Composite Engineering

On the Cutting Edge of Sailboat Design

Learn how ICE worked with a boat builder, Sail GP, in New Zealand to design and manufacture the structural composite tubing of a new wing for the SAIL GP F50 Catamaran.

In the fall of 2019, Innovative Composite Engineering worked with a boat builder, Sail GP, in New Zealand to design and manufacture the structural composite tubing of a new wing for the SAIL GP F50 Catamaran.

The F50 is a cutting-edge one-design catamaran used by all SailGP teams. A culmination of 10 years in high-performance, foiling, and multi-hull racing development, the F50 was the first boat to hit 92.6 km/h (50 knots/57.5 mph) during a race and has a predicted top speed of 96.6 km/h (52.2 knots/60 mph).

Strong, stiff, and incredibly light, the wing has powered the catamaran to incredible speeds and has made for some truly spectacular racing. At the same time, the F50 foils are made from high modulus carbon fiber, culminating in a much thinner section with less resistance at higher speeds.

As the title suggests, I am looking for hull drawings for an AC50/F50 catamaran. The hulls are one-design, so I don't think they are top-secret team information or anything. Looking to build a 25 foot "AC25" doublehanded foiling cat this summer, so I need the hull design.

15 Best Day Trips from Marrakech

Marrakech is Morocco’s most famous tourist destination.

The name conjures up images of spices, souks, deserts, and riads; an exotic place of bustling markets, ancient walled streets, and ramshackle houses.

It’s an exciting, vibrant and colorful place to visit; a place where you may well be as frustrated at times as you are enthralled, but where every moment is different and life is unique, noisy and seemingly chaotic.

The city is full of history, culture and excellent Moroccan cuisine, where every turn you take opens a world of new shocks and surprises that will keep you transfixed for days.

Beyond the historic walls of Marrakech, this city in the foothills of the high Atlas Mountains is the perfect launching pad to the surrounding area.

From deserts and waterfalls to Berber villages and rocky valleys, there are many day trips to take from Marrakech.

1. Ouzoud Falls

Ouzoud Falls, Morocco

The Ouzoud Falls are an incredibly impressive set of waterfalls that plunge from high cliffs far down into a huge basin.

The multi-layered waterfall cascades from a maximum height of 110-meters, and in an otherwise arid landscape, the location is a veritable oasis in the desert, where lush, green vegetation is found amongst the rocky confines of this canyon.

The area is famous for its olive trees; after hiking to the falls, you can relax in the shade of these trees while you feel the cooling breeze of the crashing waterfall filling the air with refreshing sprays of water.

If you are really overheated, you can even swim in the Al Abid River which the falls plunge straight into.

It’s a glorious day trip from Marrakech, and one not to be missed.

Recommended tour : Ouzoud Waterfalls Full-Day Tour from Marrakech

2. Palm Groves of Marrakech

Palm Groves of Marrakech

Known as the Palmeraie, the palm groves of Marrakech are a dense area of land that is completely devoted to the growing of palm trees.

It’s a strangely beautiful place; the palm trees are grown in the desert and are completely reliant on the ancient irrigation network that has been here for centuries to survive in this harsh climate.

The area is around 50 square miles and the palms are used to harvest dates, so expect to be given plenty to try by the local growers and sellers that you find here.

Many people will choose to join an adventurous quad bike tour to ride around the desert and the Palmeraie, a unique way to experience this beautiful and surreal landscape.

Suggested tour : Marrakech Desert & Palm Grove Quad Bike Tour

3. Sahara Desert

Sahara Desert, Morocco

Marrakech is surrounded by desert, however, the really brutal and almost unbelievable landscapes of the famous Sahara Desert don’t truly begin until you are at least a few hour’s drive outside the city itself.

The Sahara is the world’s largest hot desert.

It’s a place of extremes, where little water is found and sand dunes tower high on the horizon.

It’s an almost mystical place – especially locally – and a trip even to the edge of the Sahara is an enlightening experience.

Many people will choose to undertake multi-day expeditions through the desert guided by locals; however, if you are short on time, you can still travel to where the Sahara begins and admire the harsh, natural beauty before returning to Marrakech for the evening.

4. Agafay Desert

Agafay Desert, Morocco

If you would rather stay closer to Marrakech and experience a desert closer to your accommodation, then the Agafay Desert – although not quite as famous or as sandy as the Sahara – is within easy reach of the city.

Found between the Atlas Mountains and Marrakech, the Agafay makes for an excellent day trip.

You won’t find the distinctive sand dunes here that you may be imagining, but you will find a rocky, barren and seemingly lifeless terrain that is difficult to fully comprehend in its sparseness.

It’s a humbling place to visit – you may be able to tour some of the local villages and marvel at how people have managed to thrive here for thousands of years.

Suggested tour : Quad Biking Tour in Agafay Desert

5. Essaouira

Essaouira, Morocco

Essaouira is a vibrant port city found on the Atlantic coastline of Morocco.

It’s a welcome escape from the desert and the dry climate of Marrakech, and a trip here makes for a long but rewarding day trip.

Enjoy the beautiful sea breezes along the coast, as well as the colorful culture and buildings of the city.

The Medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it’s begging to be explored, while the narrow maze of alleys and souks are as quintessentially Moroccan as you can get.

Recommended tour : Day Trip to Essaouira from Marrakech

Agadir, Morocco

Agadir is another coastal Moroccan city that’s found a good three-hour drive from Marrakech.

The city is making a name for itself in tourist circles as a sun-drenched, windswept and relaxed place to visit.

There is an ever-growing number of resorts taking advantage of the beautiful beaches and coastline, while the city itself is an interesting example of modern Moroccan culture and life – it’s large enough to easily escape the tourist trail and discover something new.

7. Casablanca

The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco

Casablanca is the only other city that could rival Marrakech in terms of international fame.

The name Casablanca has gone down in history, thanks to the movie and the romantic connotations associated with it.

The reality is probably very different to what you might expect, and it’s a good thing to only make a day trip to the city – it is a sprawling, urban mass.

It’s worth the journey to see this famous place for what it really is, to walk through the old streets and the new and experience an inseparable piece of Moroccan history.

8. The Atlas Mountains

The Atlas Mountains, Morocco

The Atlas Mountains make up a vast and towering range that rises sharply close to Marrakech.

The mountain range stretches through three countries and the highest peak stands over 4000-meters tall.

The Atlas Mountains are an integral part of not only local geography but local Berber history and culture.

Marrakech is an excellent location from which to launch yourself into the mountains; many of the valleys and villages can be reached on day trips from the city.

Recommended tour : Berber Villages & 3 Valleys Atlas Mountains Day Trip

9. Ourika Valley

Ourika Valley

The beautiful Ourika Valley is found 50-kilometers to the south of Marrakech in the cool shadows of the Atlas Mountains.

The valley is full of small, local villages that have stood here for centuries, while the cool climate makes it a lush and verdant place to explore, particularly during the hot summer months when Marrakech can become scorching.

There are waterfalls, a mountain backdrop, and epic scenery wherever you turn.

Available tour : Ourika Valley & Atlas Mountain Full-Day Tour

Imlil, Morocco

Imlil is a local Berber village that’s found high in the Atlas Mountains.

Standing at 1800-meters, it’s set in spectacular surroundings.

Many visitors will use Imlil as a base for getting even further into the mountains on multi-day treks, including to the summit of Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in the range.

But it’s perfectly fine to simply explore here for the day – see the way the Berbers have lived here and adapted their lifestyle to the mountains and even make a few small hikes into the surrounding area.

Asni, Morocco

Lower down than Imli but perhaps easier to reach, Asni is the gateway into the Atlas Mountains when you travel here from Marrakech.

It’s a quaint place of mud-brick buildings and dusty streets, where you can see local life happening on the streets.

12. Ait Benhaddou

Ait Benhaddou

Ait Benhaddou is a marvelous UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s found on the outskirts of the Sahara Desert.

It’s an ancient, fortified town that has stood guarding the trade routes through the desert for centuries.

Today, the town is more famous for the huge number of movies that have been filmed here.

You will most likely recognize the walls, towers, and streets from at least one film that you have seen.

Despite its now touristy, star-studded fame, the town is still an incredible and distinct example of Moroccan architecture and history and it’s well worth the dusty three-hour drive from Marrakech to see.

Suggested tour : Day Trip to Ouarzazate and Ait Benhaddou

13. Ouarzazate

Ouarzazate, Morocco

Further along the road, to the south of Ait Benhaddou, can be found the fortified town of Ouarzazate.

Like its neighbor, Ouarzazate is also used as a filming location by many studios and has featured in countless historical epics and desert-based movies.

This is really where the Sahara begins too – after the high plateau that the town is built upon disappears to the south, the sandy dunes of the desert truly begin.

Suggested tour : Ouarzazate Full-Day Tour from Marrakech with Lunch

14. Amizmiz

Amizmiz

Found in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, just an hour’s drive from Marrakech, Amizmiz is an excellent example of a relatively untouched Moroccan Berber town.

Life here is slow.

The town is colorful but there is little of great interest to see except on a Tuesday, when the weekly market arrives as villagers from the mountains and surrounding area descend upon Amizmiz to buy and sell their produce.

It’s an incredible sight to witness.

15. Oukaïmeden

Oukaïmeden

Oukaïmeden is a very high altitude resort that’s found in the snowy peaks of the Atlas Mountains.

At the right time of year, it makes for an incredible contrast to the lowlands and Marrakech.

No longer is there sun, heat and desert, now there is snow, wind, and cold.

It’s a famous ski resort within the country, and being only a two-hour drive from Marrakech, you can quite literally spend the day skiing before heading back to the warmer climes of the city for the night.

1. Day trip from Marrakech to Ourika Valley

blossoming trees near Imlil and toubkal - nature near toubkal - imlil morocco - journal of nomads

This pristine valley stands at the base of the Atlas mountains. It’s a very lovely destination during spring when all the apple and cherry trees that fill the valley are blossoming.

It’s also the best place to escape the incredibly high temperatures that strike Marrakech during the summer.

It’s a great place to enjoy nature, delight yourself in the sound of the river that flows at the bottom of the valley and see some Barbary monkeys. There are also many beautiful hiking paths that will lead you to a series of waterfalls.

Snow-covered mountains overlook the whole area and give a cooling shade during the warmer months of the year.

There is a small village at the base of the valley called Setti-Fatma. The area around it is filled with almond trees and mud-brick Berber villages.

This is where visitors usually start their trek to see the Ourika Valley waterfalls. It’s very easy to find an English-speaking guide in this town that will show you around the valley for a modest fee.

The 9 best day trips from Marrakech

How to get from Marrakech to Ourika Valley by public transport

There are a few different options to reach the Ourika valley. It’s possible to take a bus to the beginning of the valley and then a shared taxi all the way to the town of Setti-Fatma.

Another option is to take a shared taxi directly from Marrakech to Setti-Fatma. Because there aren’t many people traveling there during the low season, you might have to pay for the whole taxi.

How to get to the Ourika valley from Marrakech BY BUS

Buses to Ourika leave at the Alsa bus stop in Marrakech. This is the location of this bus stop.

You can also take the bus L25 from the Bab Rab bus stop to reach the beginning of the valley.

There are a few shared taxis at the bottom of the valley where these buses will drop you off. From there you can take a shared taxi to Setti-Fatma (around 10 MAD per person).

How to get to the Ourika valley from Marrakech BY SHARED TAXI

Another way to reach Setti-Fatma directly from Marrakech is to take a shared taxi to the small town. Taxis take about one hour and a half to reach the mountain village.

They depart daily from a terminal 3km outside the Bab Er Robb medina gate in the south of the medina.

Because there is very little traffic from Marrakech to Setti-Fatma, I would recommend getting a private taxi for the whole day to bring you there and back. The rate should be around 500 to 600 MAD for a day.

It’s always better to pay at the end of the day, not at the beginning, and agree on the final price upfront.

Here is the location of Bab Er Robb in Marrakech:

How to get to Ourika valley from Marrakech by car

If you have your own car or if you are renting one , nothing will be easier than driving from Marrakech to Setti-Fatma.

Getting there takes around one hour and a half. You’ll have to follow the highway P2017 towards the south-east until you reach Ourika. From there take highway P2030 and you’ll quickly reach Setti-Fatma.

Day tours to Ourika Valley from Marrakech

Being part of a tour group is becoming a very popular way to reach the Ourika Valley from Marrakech. A lot of different companies near Jemaa el Fena square in Marrakech offer tours to the valleys.

Their prices for the day trip vary but it’s generally around 200 to 250 MAD per person. This includes the ride to the valley and back in a comfortable minivan and a visit to a Berber market.

However, remember that these tour companies might have hidden costs. The price you pay for a tour doesn’t always include the cost of the local guide joining you on this trip. You’ll often have to pay extra for that afterward, as for the food they’re offering at the restaurants.

2. Day trips from Marrakech to Atlas Mountains: Imlil and Mount Toubkal

the village of Armound near imlil - berber village near toubkal morocco - journal of nomads

Cynthia and I are mountain lovers. After spending a year living in Kyrgyzstan and trekking in the mountains of Central Asia , it was time to discover the Atlas mountains of Morocco.

The small village of Imlil, located just an hour and a half from Marrakech, sits at the base of the highest mountain peak in the country. I couldn’t resist climbing to the summit and it was an experience I’ll never forget!

This peak is called Mount Toubkal and it’s sometimes called one of the easiest peaks above 4000 meters to climb.

hiking mount Toubkal - Trekking jbel Toubkal - Toubkal the highest peak in Morocco - journal of nomads

I had the chance to spend time in the village of Imlil and climbed Mount Toubkal last spring. Even though this trek is considered an easy one, reaching the summit of this mountain was actually harder than I expected.

The mountain is known as Jebel Toubkal in Moroccan Arabic and its summit is at an altitude of 4167 meters.

Because of their proximity to Marrakesh and their year-round accessibility, Imlil and Toubkal are great day trips from the busy city.

Another option is to take a shared taxi directly from Marrakech to Imlil.

How to get from Marrakech to Imlil by bus

Take the bus to the village in Asni at the central bus station in Marrakech . From there you can easily catch a shared taxi to Imlil for 10 MAD or hitchhike the remaining 17 kilometers to Imlil.

Here’s where you find the central bus station in Marrakech:

How to get from Marrakech to Imlil by shared taxi

The easiest way to get from Marrakesh to Imlil is to take a shared taxi – or a grand taxi as they are called in Morocco. Imlil is just 60 km from Marrakesh so it doesn’t take long to get there by taxi (75-90 minutes).

The shared taxi going to Imlil leave from the grand taxi station across the street from the Jemaa el-Fnaa bus stop.

You can hire the whole taxi for yourself for  250 MAD  to  300 MAD  or you can share it with other passengers. If you wait for the taxi to fill up, the price will be much lower (around  50 MAD  to get to Imlil).

How to get to Imlil from Marrakech by car

If you have your own car or if you are renting one , you can also drive directly to the small village of Imlil.

The road is almost completely paved all the way to the mountain village and will take you through some gorgeous landscapes. The road there is relatively safe but during winter it tends to be covered by rocks that fall from the cliffs nearby so drive carefully.

You can also go on a guided day tour from Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains and Imlil

3. Day trip to Oukaimeden Valley

Backpacking in winter

Oukaimeden is a beautiful ski resort about 80 kilometers from Marrakech and not too far from  Mount T oubkal . Before visiting Morocco and more particularly, the Atlas mountains, I had no idea I would find so much snow in a North African country.

Oukaimeden has some amazing ski slopes and plenty of snow for winter sports enthusiasts.

This resort has six ski lifts and there are plenty of hotels and ski rental facilities nearby. What makes this resort so amazing is that you can literally spend the day skiing in sub-zero temperatures before heading back to the warmer climate of Marrakech for the night.

A lift pass costs around 30 MAD for half a day and 50 MAD for a full day. The ski equipment costs 70 to 80 MAD per day. There are also a few ski instructors at Oukaimeden, charging 150 MAD for a half day and 250 MAD for a complete day of classes.

market of Marrakesh Morocco - journal of nomads

How to get to Oukaimeden from Marrakech by public transport

There are no buses that travel between Marrakech and Oukaimeden as the road to get there is very winding and in some parts not wide enough for a bus.

Shared taxis from the grand taxi station in Marrakech will typically cost 300-400 MAD for the 75 km to the mountain ski station(each way).

How to get to Oukaimeden from Marrakech with your own car

To reach Oukaimeden with your car, you will have to go towards the same direction as you would for Setti-Fatma (see how to get to Ourika Valley). Drive south on road P2017 and you will find the exit to Oukaimeden near Aghbalou.

It takes about one hour and a half to get from Marrakesh to Oukaimeden.

Day tours from Marrakech to Oukaimeden Valley

If you want to escape from the city life in Marrakech and experience some of the best skiing and snowboarding in Africa with a group of fun people, we suggest this full-day trip to Oukaimeden .

You will be picked up from your accommodation in Marrakesh around 8 AM. and you will be transported from Marrakesh to Oukaimeden is a comfortable minibus.

Your guide will offer local knowledge and opportunities to stop along the way. On arrival, he will arrange all the ski or snowboard equipment you need.

Then get set to hit the slopes. After a break for lunch, you will be free to hit the slopes again for the rest of the afternoon. The return to Marrakesh will depart around 4 PM.

You can also visit Oukaimeden in summer as part of the Atlas Mountains & 4 Valleys Tour including the Ourika Valley (see above):

4. Day trips from Marrakech to Sahara Desert: Agafay Desert

What attracts most people to Morocco are the beautiful images of the Sahara and more specifically all the beautiful desert expeditions that can be done in Merzouga .

As appealing as this may look, this small desert town is located relatively far from Marrakesh and it’s impossible to visit for people that are just in Morocco for a short trip.

The best places to visit in Morocco - The Sahara Desert - sunset in the desert - Merzouga -Journal of Nomads

The Agafay desert is the next best thing and the best part is that it’s super close to Marrakech.

This desert doesn’t have the sand dunes that are so typical in M’hamid and Merzouga but it’s still a fascinating place.

You may be able to witness some of the local villages by quad if you go there with a tour from Marrakech .

The 9 best day trips from Marrakech

There is even a manmade lake on the edge of the Agafay Desert that was built to provide the city of Marrakech with electricity.

You can swim at one of the beaches alongside the lake or you can rent jet skis or pedal boats and explore the waters.

There are also many hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding trails in the hills above the lake.

How to get from Marrakech to Agafay Desert by public transport

There are no shared taxis or buses going to the Agafay desert from Marrakesh as far as I know. It can be reached if you have your own (rental) car or if you book a day trip (see below).

How to get to the Agafay Desert from Marrakech by car

If you have your own car or if you are renting one , you should try to reach the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir. This is the man-made lake that stands in the middle of the Agafay desert.

Getting there takes about 47 minutes from the city-center of Marrakech. You’ll have to follow highway P2009 towards the south-west until you reach the desert and the lake.

Day tours from Marrakech to Agafay desert

There are many travel companies offering tours to the Agafay desert. If you’re booking a tour in Marrakech, make sure you know beforehand what is included so you don’t get any unpleasant hidden costs.

A lot of local companies also sell their tours online where you have a clear description of what’s included in the tour and what to expect.

Here are some tours we recommend:

5. Day trip to Ait Ben Haddou

Best day trips from Marrakech - Marrakech excursions - Ait Ben Haddou Morocco - best places to visit Morocco

Ait Ben Haddou is an ancient fortified mud-brick village located between the Sahara and Marrakech. It’s a place known as a Ksar- the North African term for “Berber castle”.

This village is one of Morocco’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites and was used as a set in the TV-series Game of Thrones to portray the slaving city of Yunkai that Daenerys Targaryen laid siege to.

It’s a three-hour dusty drive to reach Ait Ben Haddou from Marrakech but it’s totally worth it! This old fortified village is located just 30 km north of Ouarzazate so it’s ideal to visit both locations on a day trip from Marrakech.

Ksar Ait Ben Haddou Morocco - best photography location Morocco

How to get to Ait Ben Haddou from Marrakech by public transport

The best way to reach Ait Ben Haddou by public transport is to take a CTM bus from the central bus station in Marrakesh towards Ouarzazate.

A bus ticket between the two cities will cost around 80 MAD and then you might have to pay an additional 10 MAD for your luggage.

Here is the location of the bus station in Marrakech:

As soon as you get on the bus, ask your driver to stop at the crossroads in Taborah. From there, you’ll only be16 km away from Ait Ben Haddou. There will be a few taxis around waiting for passengers at the crossroad in Taborah.

A shared taxi from there to the mud city should cost around 10 MAD if it fills up before leaving.

How to get to Ait Ben Haddou from Marrakech with your own car

If you have your own car or if you are renting one for the day , it will be even easier to reach Ait Ben Haddou.

Although you won’t have to waste time looking for a taxi or a bus, you’ll still have to drive a bit slower than usual. The road between Marrakech and Ait Ben Haddou is quite winding and there are a few treacherous curves along the way so I would advise driving there with caution.

Ait Ben Haddou is located 184 km from Marrakech. Driving there should take about 3 hours and a half. To get there, simply follow highway N9 towards the south.

Day tours to Ait Ben Haddou from Marrakech

This is the most popular way for people to go a quick day trip to Ait Ben Haddou from Marrakech.

There are many different travel companies based in Marrakech that offer tours to the mud village thus the prices for that trip vary greatly.

The base price for that trip is around 300 MAD per person (around 30 euros). Some companies will also combine this tour with a visit to Ouarzazate, raising the prices around 700 MAD per person.

You can expect a smooth ride in a very comfortable air-conditioned minibus and a few stops for refreshments along the way. They usually leave the city around 8:30 am and do a few stops along the way to the old fortified city.

The pick-up will be directly at your hostel or hotel in Marrakech or at the Jemaa el Fna square in the morning. Most tours will provide you with an English or French-speaking driver. Some tours will include a local guide at Ait Ben Haddou in their price while others won’t.

You should check this beforehand with your tour operator or in the tour description. The tours do not include lunch so you should either bring snacks or have money for the restaurants near the old city.

Although the paths are very easy to walk on, we suggest bringing a good pair of walking shoes or some sandals. Also, bring some sunscreen and don’t forget your camera.

6. Day trip from Marrakech to Ouzoud Waterfalls

Driving to the Cascade d'Ouzoud - Journal of Nomads

Going to the Ouzoud waterfalls is one of the best day trips from Marrakech if you travel by car . The road from Marrakech to the Ouzoud waterfalls is quite scenic and there are many beautiful photo stops along the way.

The Ouzoud waterfalls are a series of very tall and very impressive waterfalls that plunge from high cliffs in a huge pool of water. These cascades are 110 meters high and surrounded by lush vegetation all around.

During summer it’s possible to go for a refreshing swim in the water at the bottom of the pools. There are even some boats that can bring you closer to the falls for a modest fee (20 MAD)

The area around the falls is famous for its olive trees and for the presence of Barbary monkeys. It’s a place where one can enjoy nature but in spring and summer, it tends to get very crowded.

Ouzoud is the second tallest waterfall in Africa. It’s a very touristic destination and one of the most visited and photographed natural sites in Morocco.

There are a few different ways to reach the Ouzoud waterfalls by public transportation. You could take a shared taxi from Marrakesh to Azilal and then another one to Ouzoud.

How to get to Ouzoud Waterfalls from Marrakech by bus

There’s no direct bus going from Marrakech to Ouzoud. You first have to take a bus from Marrakech to Beni-Mellal and from there take a shared taxi fromto the waterfalls.

You can take a bus from Marrakesh to Beni-Mellal with the two main bus companies in Morocco, CTM , and Supratours or with a local bus at the central bus station in Marrakech .

This option, however, takes time and it’s also more expensive than if you’d get there by shared taxi (see below).

How to get to Marrakech to Ouzoud Waterfalls by shared taxi

You can take a shared taxi from Bab Doukala in Marrakech and it will get you to a village called Azilal not too far from the falls.

A shared taxi from Bab Doukala to Azilal should cost around 50 MAD per person if the taxi is full (6 people) when you leave. Some taxi drivers don’t like to wait until the taxi fills up before they leave so you may have to pay a bit more.

The taxis from Azilal to Ouzoud are a bit cheaper (about 25 MAD per person) and you could pay for the whole taxi to get to the cascades faster. If you’d pay for a whole taxi from Azilal to Ouzoud, it would cost around 150 MAD.

How to get from Marrakech to Ouzoud Waterfalls by car

The Ouzoud waterfalls are located 157 km from Marrakesh and it takes about two hours and a half to get there by car. You can opt to rent a car for the day as the drive to Ouzoud is very beautiful and you can stop for photos wherever and whenever you like.

To get from Marrakesh to Ouzoud, you will have to drive towards the northeast on highway N8 until you reach highway R208. Once you reach the R208 continue towards the village of Tanant and from there to Ouzoud.

There are a lot of places where you can park your car near the cascades but it will cost between 10 and 20 MAD to park your car there for the day. You can pay that small fee directly to the parking attendant.

Day tours from Marrakech to Ouzoud Waterfalls

The price for organized tours to the Ouzoud waterfalls starts around 275 MAD per person.

This includes the ride to the waterfalls and back in a comfortable minivan but it doesn’t include the price of the local guide or food near the cascades.

If you book a tour to the Ouzoud waterfalls, you’ll save a lot of time that you would have otherwise spent in finding public transport to get there.

You can expect a smooth ride in a very comfortable air-conditioned minibus and a few stops for refreshments along the way.

7. Day trip to Marrakech’s Palm Grove

Backpacking in Morocco - Journal of Nomads

Marrakech’s beautiful Palm Grove, also known as La Palmeraie, is less than an hour outside of Marrakech so it’s an ideal day trip to escape the busy city.

La Palmeraie covers 13,000 ha and has about 150,000 palm trees providing shade where camels can escape the heat of the desert.

As you walk around this grove, you’ll find an ancient irrigation system that has been used there for centuries

There are many date sellers and growers working in this beautiful oasis so be ready for a unique cultural experience.

How to get to Marrakech’s Palm Grove by public transport

There aren’t many shared taxis or public buses reaching the palmeraie from the city center but a great alternative is to reach this oasis with the Hop on hop off Marrakesh city tour bus .

This bus has an open upper deck where you will enjoy the best panoramic views of the city in the most comfortable way possible.

This bus also offers a special Palm grove tour route with which you’ll discover the northern part of the city and the Marrakech Palm Grove. There you will be able to enjoy different activities such as a camel or a quad ride .

The route is made of 13 stops and approximately lasts 1 hour.

Things to see and do in Essaouira – The complete guide to Morocco's windy city - Essouira port - Journal of Nomads

Essaouira is one of our favorite cities in Morocco. It’s a charming port town where everything is much calmer and quieter than in Marrakech. It’s a city that mixes the Moroccan culture and the Portuguese architecture in a very interesting way.

Essaouira attracts a young crowd of surfers and backpackers throughout the year. People go there for the great waves and beaches nearby but also for the small streets filled with the beautiful handicraft of local artisans.

Essaouira has its own fortified old medina, amazing cuisine and a fun and hip energy that is very distinct from other Moroccan cities. The city is located very close to Marrakech and also easily accessible from nearby coastal cities such as Casablanca and Rabat .

We loved this small town so much that what was supposed to be a short day trip from Marrakech became a two weeks stay. The vibe of this place was amazing and we really bonded with all the travelers we met there.

9. Day trip from Marrakech to Casablanca

The 9 best day trips from Marrakech

Let’s face it, Casablanca is a very busy city and probably nowhere as quiet and romantic as Essaouira. If you would have just a few weeks to spend in Morocco, it’s not necessarily a city I would recommend.

If you’re in Morocco for a while, however, it could definitely be worth spending some time in this city and then heading back to Marrakech or continuing north towards Rabat or Tangier .

kasbah Rabat - Kasbah des oudaias Rabat Morocco - journal of nomads

Casablanca is a city that has been featured in many movies and it has a fascinating history. It’s a great place to see how modern Morocco mixes with centuries of traditions and architecture.

If you’re going for a day to Casablanca, definitely check out following guide as it gives you an overview of the things to do in this metropolitan city in one or two days:

How to get to Casablanca from Marrakech by public transport

There are a few different ways to reach Casablanca from Marrakech. Because this coastal city is such a popular destination, getting there is not very complicated.

The cheapest mode of transport to get there is by bus, which costs from 90 to 130 MAD.

How to reach Casablanca from Marrakesh by bus

Because Casablanca is a bit farther from Marrakech than the other destinations mentioned in this guide, I would only recommend taking the most comfortable buses in Morocco to get there.

The most comfortable buses in the country are owned and operated by two companies; CTM and Supratours .

The CTM bus stop and the Supratours station are located both very close to each other in an area called Gueliz in the suburbs of Marrakech. It will require a taxi to get there from Jemaa el Fenaa.

Here is the location of the CTM bus station in Marrakesh:

And this is where you will find the Supratours station:

These buses are much more comfortable than the ones owned by less reputable companies but they also tend to be a bit more expensive.

How to reach Casablanca from Marrakech by train

The trains in Morocco are very comfortable and they are the best way to see the Moroccan landscapes while moving from city to city.

There is a train that goes from Marrakech towards Casablanca every two hours. It takes about two hours and a half to get there and the ticket costs around 110 MAD.

Here is where you’ll find the train station in Marrakech:

How to reach Casablanca from Marrakech by shared taxi

There are different taxis going from Marrakech to Casablanca. Shared ones and private ones. The shared taxis are usually old Mercedez Benz in which up to six people are squeezed together.

They are not the most comfortable option but they are definitely cheap. The price per person in a shared taxi should be around 110 MAD.

This is where the shared taxi station is in Marrakech:

Because this is quite a long distance, I wouldn’t advise taking a shared taxi if you’re traveling with someone else or a group of people and you have luggage.

Paying for a private taxi for your group would be a much better option. The price for a private taxi from Marrakesh to Casablanca is around 1000 MAD.

How to reach Casablanca from Marrakech with your own car

If you have your own car, the fastest way to get to Casablanca from Marrakech is by following the highways A7 and N11.

From Marrakech, you will have to drive north for almost three hours before reaching the coastal city.

It could also be nice to go on a guided day tour from Marrakech to Casablanca.

5 of the best day trips from Marrakesh

Dec 9, 2023 • 7 min read

day trips from marrakech

If you’re staying in Marrakesh , chances are you’re staying in its fabled medina.

Yet, scintillating as it all is, a few days in it can start to feel a little intense, especially if you’re visiting during high season . Fortunately, there are plenty of escapes within easy striking distance of the Red City that offer fresh air and a fresh perspective on Moroccan life.

From bucolic mountain trails to desert camps and breezy beachside getaways, art-filled gardens to organic cooking classes, exploring further afield is a great way to get to know the country on a more intimate level. Here are five of our favorite day trips from Marrakesh. And here’s a grand taxi  fare calculator  to help you get an idea of what you should be paying per trip.

1. Spend a day in the Agafay Desert

Travel time: 45 minutes

If time doesn’t allow for a trip to the Sahara, an excursion to the stone desert of Agafay , a mere 30km (19 miles) south of Marrakesh may be just the ticket. Characterized by undulating rocky terrain that has formed into solid dunes framing semi-arid plains, stark valleys, occasional oases and scattered Berber villages, it invites exploration and adventure.

From horseback riding, camel caravans and buggy tours, to gentle hikes and serene picnics, there are plenty of ways to enjoy this rugged beauty through companies like Marrakech Desert Trips . If you want to make a bigger trip out of it and catch the sunset, stay overnight in one of several camps that dot this terrain. They come with a variety of treats, from campfire dining and stargazing with professional telescopes at Scarabeo Camp , to a day at the pool and lunch at the White Camel .

How to get to Agafay from Marrakesh:  If you’ve booked a tour, or an overnight stay somewhere, return transportation from your riad will often be provided from around 500 MAD. If you’re heading out for the day on your own, the best way to do it is via grand taxi , departing Bab Doukkala in Marrakesh, from 250 MAD one way. Remember to book your driver to take you home again.

Two large hand sculptures topped with blue eyes guard a pathway in a botanical garden

2. Lose yourself in the wonder of Anima Gardens

Travel time: 45 minutes

André Heller’s whimsical, art-filled Anima Gardens provide an Alice-in-Wonderland moment loved by kids and adults alike. Spread over several acres, the lushly planted gardens incorporate mirrored glades, giant beaded heads like those you see in the souks, gleaming nazars (an amulet against the evil eye) inset into bougainvillea bushes, all interspersed between towering, flowering shrubs and trees, like a Mad Hatter’s Garden of Eden. It’s a delightful, engaging and blessedly peaceful way of escaping the frenetic energy of the medina.

When you finish exploring, stop for lunch at the onsite Paul Bowles Cafe for a seasonally changing menu built on ingredients from local farms in the Ourika Valley . You get a sensational view of Toubkal – North Africa’s highest mountain – from the rooftop. Entry tickets can be bought online from 155 MAD. It's 65 MAD for children aged between 12 and 16 and free for children under 12.

How to get to Anima Gardens from Marrakesh:  A free shuttle bus departs from the Koutoubia car park (“Parking & Lavage”, behind the Koutoubia mosque), daily at 9:30am and 2:30pm. It returns from Anima Gardens to the Koutoubia at 1pm and 5:30pm.

Three hikers head up a track in a rocky mountain landscape

3. Hike the foothills of the High Atlas

Travel time: 1 to 1.5 hours

With its rugged, rouge-hued landscapes and silvery rivers framed by the mighty peaks of the Atlas Mountains, the foothills provide a stunning backdrop for outdoor exploration. Post-earthquake, stunning hiking routes are open through Ourika and Ouirgane, and local people are more reliant than ever on the money this brings into the region.

Trails wind through the valleys, leading to cascading waterfalls (note that the famous seven waterfalls of Setti Fatma are an extremely popular day trip and can get crowded), emerald green hillsides, and rammed earth villages that dot the scenery, providing ample spots for reviving pots of mint tea and Berber tagines. It’s particularly spectacular in the spring when the mountains burst into bloom with wild flowers and fruit tree blossoms, but works year round for simply getting into the fresh air for a few hours.

Within Toukbal National Park , a guide is now legally required, and there are checkpoints so don’t be tempted to go it alone. Book day treks with reputable outfitters like Trekking Morocco , or Atlas Mountain Guide , both of whom include a return transfer from Marrakesh in their fees. Prices depend on the size of your group.

How to get to Ourika or Ourigane from Marrakesh:  A CTM bus leaves for Ourika from the Gare Routière Bab Doukkala in Marrakesh several times a day and takes between 1.5 and 2 hours (45 MAD). A one-way journey to Ourika departing from Bab Doukkala in a grand taxi  costs from 250 MAD for the whole car, or 50 MAD for a seat. Ourigane is not connected by bus so hire a grand taxi , which costs from 420 MAD for the whole car, or 70 MAD for a seat.

A coastal fortress at sunset

4. Take a beach day in Essaouira

Travel time: 2 hours 45 minutes

Although it involves an early start and a late finish, Essaouira seduces many visitors with its easy-going seaside charm. From fortified Portuguese port to artistic haven with a bohemian vibe, the little town is known for sweeping sandy beaches and a UNESCO-recognized medina, knitted together in a maze of narrow alleyways fringed by whitewashed buildings trimmed in blue.

Wander down to the bustling harbor mid-morning to watch the fishing boats come in with the day's catch, while slurping freshly shucked oysters. Explore sun-splashed souks brimming with artisanal crafts, and eat exceptional food at some of the country’s most eclectic and colorful restaurants. Caravane Cafe , Dar Baba , Umia and La Table Madada are all excellent choices, especially when paired with organic wines from local winery Le Val d’Argan in nearby Ounagha. If time allows, you won’t regret staying overnight and there are plenty of options for every budget, from grand dame Villa Maroc to groovy, generously priced newcomer Mama Souiri .

How to get to Essaouira from Marrakesh:  Supratours buses leave from next to the train station in Marrakesh four times a day and take 3 hours. The first bus from Marrakesh is at 9am, and the last bus out of Essaouira is at 5pm. It costs from 100 MAD each way. A grand taxi costs about 1200 MAD one way for the whole car, or 200 MAD for a seat.

5. Cook over fire at an Atlas farm

The best food begins with the finest seasonal ingredients, and at Ourika Organic Kitchen  you’ll start your class by first gathering fruits, vegetables, herbs and teas from its glorious gardens. Then, with the mighty Atlas Mountains as your backdrop, you’ll take a deep dive into Amazigh culinary heritage in an outdoor kitchen where most dishes are cooked over charcoal.

Expect richly flavored, vine-ripened aubergines and tomatoes as they char on the grill to make zaalouk de souss , locally reared chicken rubbed in chermoula (herb, garlic and spice marinade) and cooked in an earthenware tagine to smoky, tender juiciness, and the crisp, delicate pastry of a quail pastilla (on request).

Classes start from 11am and finish around 2pm, when you’ll be rewarded for all your hard work by tucking in to the fruits of your labors. Food always tastes better eaten outdoors and chances are, this will be the best dish of your entire trip.  Prices start from 2800 MAD for two people, including transfer to and from Marrakesh.

How to get to Ourika Organic Kitchen from Marrakesh:  Ourika Organic Kitchen is in the Ourigane Valley. A one-way journey to Ourigane departing from Bab Doukkala in a grand taxi costs from 420 MAD for the whole car, or 70 MAD for a seat.

The 7 Best Day Trips From Marrakech

Are you looking for the best day trips from Marrakech? Well this guide has every single day trip that you can do from Marrakech that is actually worth the effort!

The city of Marrakech is already a wonderful destination on its own but it’s also close to other incredible destinations in Morocco. You can visit the impressive waterfalls of Ouzoud or maybe you prefer spending the day exploring the old city of Aït-Ben Haddou in the Atlas Mountains.

It would be a shame of you would only explore the most famous city in Morocco cause this country has so much more to offer. If you’re looking for a more adventurous trip you should take a look at my 10 day road trip itinerary in Morocco ! But these day trips from Marrakech all make for a spectacular addition to an already incredible itinerary.

These day trips can vary from places a little over 1 hour of driving to those that stretch to over 3 hours away. Nevertheless, all of them are completely worth the time and effort!

The 7 Best Day Trips From Marrakech You Shouldn't Miss

The 7 Best Day Trips From Marrakech You Shouldn’t Miss

A lot of these day trips from Marrakech can be done with the help of a guided tour so if I was able to find a good and reliable one for you it will be included in this article as well.

If you prefer exploring at your own pace I highly recommend you to get a rental car at the Menara International Airport in Marrakech . I highly recommend booking your rental car online and not in person on arrival. This way you’ll avoid higher prices (unless your haggling skills are really, really good!) and you won’t get stuck with a low quality car.

With sites like  SunnyCars  you’ll be able to compare different companies and prices next to each other. Plus in case of any issue with the rental company or the car, they take as much responsibility as the actual rental company and they only work with the most reliable car rentals in the world.

They are an all-in car rental service without any hidden costs or unpleasant surprises!

Really everything you need is included in their all-inclusive car rental formula. Unlimited mileage and a fair fuel arrangement? Check. Third-party insurance of at least €7.5 million, damage insurance and theft insurance? Also included. They even cover the costs of towing if the rental car breaks down. In case of damage or theft, you pay the own risk on the spot, which they refund when you return home. This also includes damage to glass, tires, the floor or roof of the car!

With SunnyCars you can already rent a high quality car for as little as €32 per day for 1 week in April!

The 7 Best Day Trips From Marrakech You Shouldn't Miss

1. Ouzoud Waterfalls

🚗 Driving time from Marrakech – 2,5 hours

If you’re looking for a more lush scenery then a day trip to the Ouzoud waterfalls is the perfect idea!

This impressive waterfall is located in the Middle Atlas Mountains and is one of the most popular day tours from Marrakech. And with good reason!

The Ouzoud falls have a 110 meter drop across several tiers and consist of multiple layers. You can park your car at one of the assigned parking lot at the top of the waterfalls. When we arrived a local actually guided us to his parking lot behind his restaurant which was fine for us.

You can then proceed to walk around the entire waterfall and also hike down to the bottom . Make sure to bring your bathing suit cause you can actually go swimming in the cool river down below. If swimming is not your thing you can also opt to go for a boat ride!

🎒 Optional guided tour – Ouzoud waterfalls day trip and optional boat ride

2. Aït-Ben Haddou & Ouarzazate – My favorite day trip from Marrakech

🚗 Driving time from Marrakech – 3,5 hours

One of the most beautiful day trips from Marrakech is the twin destination of Aït-Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate. These historical sites are located within the Atlas Mountains and have formed the backdrop for some of the most famous tv-shows and movies.

You can spot them in Game of Thrones, Gladiator and The Mummy!

Aït-Ben Haddou is a fortified village from the 11th century and out of the two of them this one is probably the most recognizable. One of the best things to do is simply wander around its red colored streets and take in the views from the top. Make sure to sit down for some Moroccan tea at the local teahouse which offers a panoramic view over the city!

Another must see on your day trip is the Tifoultoute Kasbah , where you’ll feel like you’ve taken a step back in time.

And to top it all off make sure to visit the Fint Oasis . This small village is a real palm tree lined oasis in the middle of the desert and where it looks like time stood still.

🎒 Optional guided tour – Aït-Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate day trip from Marrakech

The 7 Best Day Trips From Marrakech You Shouldn't Miss

💡 TIP – I would totally understand if all of these activities are a little bit too much to do in one single day, especially considering the total amount of driving that you’ll be doing. I don’t expect everyone to be as bonkers as I am! The area around Ouarzazate is home to some of the most incredible stays in Morocco and I’ve listed my top choices for you below!

Kasbah Titrit & Spa – This stunning kasbah is located only 5km from Aït-Ben Haddou and offers some of the most scenic views in the Atlas Mountains!

L’oasis Du Bonheur – I actually stayed at this place during our road trip through Morocco and while it isn’t the most luxurious it does come with stunning views!

3. Agafay Desert

🚗 Driving time from Marrakech – 45 minutes

One of the best and closest day tours from Marrakech is a trip to the beautiful Agafay desert.

Agafay is surrounded by an arid, yet majestic rocky landscape that resembles a moon crater and is located only an hour away from Marrakech. The Agafay Desert is best described as a landscape of many contrasts .

Besides going for a quad or camel ride the desert of Agafay is especially known as one of the best places to go glamping near Marrakech . Over the past years tons of luxury desert camps have popped up and they will guarantee a unique and magical experience in the Moroccan desert.

Glamping in the Agafay desert is especially interesting for those who don’t wish to do the more than 6 hour drive to the well known Sahara desert. It’s the ideal solution for those who wish to stay a little closer to Marrakech.

Some of the most luxurious camp sites in the Agafay desert are:

  • Agafay Luxury camp
  • Canyon Lodge Désert Agafay
  • Terre Des Etoiles

🎒Optional guided tour – Atlas mountains and Agafay desert day trip

4. Essaouira

🚗 Driving time from Marrakech to Essaouira – 2.5 hours

The seaside town of Essaouira is located alongside the Atlantic coast and makes for one of the most interesting day trips from Marrakech.

Just like Aït-Ben Haddou the harbor town of Essaouira was used as a filming location in Game of Thrones. The city has a more bohemian vibe and walk walking through the streets and alongside the harbor you’ll come across one scenic spots after the other.

The vibe here is completely different from the crowded city of Marrakech and I think it’s always fun to see the different aspects of a country.

Typical for Essaouira are its blue fishing boats and the giant city walls that are still lined with canons.

Wander through the streets and sit down at one of the many local restaurants to enjoy some fresh seafood before returning to the hustle and bustle of Marrakech.

🎒 Optional guided tour – From Marrakech full day Essaouira tour

birds flying over water

5. Imouzzer

🚗 Driving time from Marrakech – 3 hours

The falls of Imouzzer are a true hidden gem in Morocco and can be best seen in action from February to August . It’s one of North Africa’s most stories waterfalls but you do need to be in a bit of luck to actually see them. These days they are only intermittently running depending on rainfall.

The walk down to the waterfall is 4km and you really don’t need a guide to do so. So make to say no to all of the locals offering their “official” guide services.

Below the waterfall you’ll find a beautiful blue plunge pool but I don’t recommend you to go swimming here.

While visiting Imouzzer, be sure to continue on a little to Paradise Valley , a photogenic area boasting natural rock pools fed by more small cascades.

day trips from marrakech

6. Casablanca

🚗 Driving time from Marrakech – 2.5 hours

The city of Casablanca is the perfect day trip from Marrakech if you want to soak up some true Moroccan culture. The city on its own isn’t all that special. In all honestly I found it to be a little disappointing.

But the main reason for visiting isn’t to stroll around the busy big city streets. It’s to visit the Hassan II Mosque , the second largest mosque in the entire world.

It was built in 1993 but what it lacks in history it sure makes up for in design and grandness. Its minaret is over 200m high and the prayer hall alone is more than 200 hectares.

You can visit the Hassan II Mosque in the morning but be aware that this is a place of worship and meditation so several rules apply. You need to wear clothes that cover your shoulders, torso and that come below the knee. You’ll need to remove your shoes before entering but you can grab a bag at the entrance to bring them with you. Within the mosque you need to remain silent and drinking and smoking is prohibited.

Other places of interest in Casablanca are the Muhammad V Square, the Casablanca cathedral and the Arab League Park.

For lunch either go to Le Cabestan or Le Gatsby.

7. Dades Gorges – The most adventurous day trip from Marrakech

🚗 Driving time from Marrakech – 5 hours

If you’re an adventurous type then a visit to the Dades Gorges should be at the top of your list! The gorge was carved out by the passage of the Dades River and is navigable via a road known locally as the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs .

Those that drive its hairpin bends can expect to discover breathtaking rock formations in colors that range from tan and beige to gold, rust red, and dusky mauve.

The historic villages of the Berbers overlook the gorge and while some of them are still inhabited by the locals they also created some beautiful boutique hotels especially for tourists.

The most popular way to experience the Dadès Gorge is to drive along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. It’s not for the faint of heart but it will guarantee you to see some of the most amazing viewpoints in the entire area!

Grab lunch at restaurant Timzzillite from where you can enjoy a panoramic view over this twisty road.

Due to the fact that the Dades Gorges is a bit of a drive from Marrakech it’s not a bad idea to also spend a night in this area. That way you also get the chance to explore one of the many hiking trails that will lead you through the valley.

Some of the best places to stay in the Dades Valley are:

  • Hotel Riad Bahammou
  • Hotel Babylon Dades

It’s a truly one-of-a-kind way to enjoy sweeping views of Marrakech during an awesome, 45-minute flight above the city.

So, after getting picked up from your riad in Marrakech, you’ll travel just 20 km to the Marrakech hot air ballooning sight.

You’ll stand in awe as they blow up the balloons right before your eyes (I loved watching the process and thought it was super cool) and enjoy some pastries, tea, and coffee before a quick safety briefing.

Initially we were skeptical about the value for money, but honestly after being there and watching the set up and experiencing the morning I couldn’t recommend it more highly. But, this place is beyond epic and a spot you’ll definitely see if you decide to do a 3-day desert tour from Marrakech (I did this and it was 100% worth it).

See, Ait Benhaddou is a historic ighrem or ksar that sits along an old caravan route that was used by traders going from Marrakech and the Sahara.

It is such an exquisite example of Moroccan clay architecture that it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

At Ait Ben Haddou we got an other tour guide who we needed to pay a little extra. We could ask any questions we had so we learned a lot. I think this day tour really is a recommendation, 10 out of 10!” Lisanne ( read more reviews now )

You’ll spend two hours here admiring views of the Kasbah, and digging into an epic meal on a terrace before continuing to Telouet and the Ounila Valley.

It’s home to the Taourirt Kasbah, which features a gorgeous, 19th-century palace and incredible views of the surrounding area.

You can also drive southeast through the Draa Valley’s lush palm groves as you make your way to the desert.

To visit, try this day trip to Ouarzazate and Ait Benhaddou . You’ll get picked up from your hotel and whisked away on a glorious Marrakech day trip into the Atlas Mountains. Just be sure to have breakfast in Marrakech first since it’s a long day.

You’ll drive for an hour and stop at the quaint village of Ait Ben Barka to enjoy the views and explore Toufliht.

“I really liked the tour. Badr was an excellent guide who kindly explained us the history of Morocco and responded to our curiosities. Youssef was an excellent driver and always available. 5. Imlil and Toubkal National Park

⭐️ Rating: 5.0/5.0 (320 Reviews) Price: $38.00 per person Duration: 6 hours 📍Meeting Point: Hotel pick up available Operator: Marrakech Day Trips – Tours Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

What I love about this day trip from Marrakech is that it’s  only about an hour and a half away from the city.

Yet, you’ll be transported to an entirely new world when you arrive at Imlil during this High Atlas Mountains day tour .

So, get ready to hike through Toubkal National Park and marvel at Mount Toubkal, which stands at 4,167 meters tall and is the tallest mountain in North Africa.

Just be aware that this hike is intense, although not technically challenging.

But, if you think you can manage it then you’ll enjoy stunning views from the top. However, you’ll need more than a day if you want to hike to the top of Mount Toubkal .

Otherwise, you can always just go for a leisurely stroll through the village and learn a bit about Berber culture.

Personally, I’d go with this Atlas Mountains and Toubkal Museum Day Tour .

First, get picked up from your Marrakech hotel and enjoy a picturesque drive through Moulay Brahim Gorges and Tagom towards Tahanaout.

Stop at a Argan Cooperative to see argan oil production and learn about local Berber argan production before continuing through the scenic valley of Asni.

It’s a place celebrated for its lush fruit orchards and for majestic views of Toubkal Mountain.

Arrive at Toubkal National Park and visit the ecomuseum to learn about the unique biodiversity of the Atlas Mountains and engage with interactive displays.

“We had Hassan as our driver and Ghafour as our guide. I am a Captain in a major international airline used to using these services. In 46 years flying, I have never seen a more helpful driver, safe, with good English, always on time with good WhatsApp comms the day before. The guide had a great standard of English. He made sure he understood what we wanted and then delivered. He was cheerful and took excellent photos throughout, and sent us others he took. Again great comms on whatsapp. Both went the extra distance to make a memorable day. I would recommend these 2 guys to anyone making a booking. We have already passed their Getyourguide details to our friends. Well done for a special day.” Anonymous ( read more reviews now)

Next, proceed to Imlil Mezik where you’ll  commence your hike as you walk through walnut groves and past a striking Imlil waterfall.

Take in views of  the river from 1,900 meters above sea level before enjoying delicious Moroccan cuisine (tagine, couscous, soup, mint tea) from the terrace of a local restaurant.

You’ll then finish  your hike through Imlil and make your way back to Marrakech. However, you do have the option to extend your tour with a visit to Takerkoust Lake and the Kik Plateau.

6. The Atlas Mountains

View of the green grass of the Atlas Mountains on a sunny day with snow in the foreground. This is one of the best day trips from Marrakech.

⭐️ Rating: 4.8/5.0 (3675 Reviews) Price: $47.96 per person Duration: 1 day 📍 Meeting Point: Pick up included Operator: Tours From Marrakech Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

Stretching out for 2,500 km across northwestern Africa and into Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, this incredible mountain range separates the ocean from the Sahara.

It is a paradise for hikers who want to explore unique terrain, walk through vast canyons, see incredible wildlife, and marvel at local Berber villages.

As previously mentioned, the range’s highest peak is Mountain Toubkal in Toubkal National Park.

So, if you would like to enjoy all that the park has to offer, sign up for this incredible Atlas Mountains full day hiking trip .

After an early morning departure from Marrakech, you’ll begin your journey towards Moulay Brahim Gorges.

Once there, you’ll hop on a camel and enjoy the ride of a lifetime since breathtaking views surround you.

Continue by vehicle as you pass by quiet Berber villages on your way to Imlil Valley.

Upon reaching Imlil, a local will greet you with warm mint tea before you begin a 2 to 3 hour hike to Armed.

“Really enjoyed our day in the High Atlas Mountains. Excellent value for money, excellent guide and great food too! Views were incredible, learnt a lot and we had perfect weather for the walk (in March). Visiting Agafay Desert for a quick camel ride, second breakfast at the co-operative and the waterfall were all a bonus. You even get to drive back via the road used in Mission Impossible. Highly recommend guide Mustafa and driver Abdul.” Harriet ( read more reviews now )

It’s a village that is the highest and most expensive within the Imlil Valley. During your trek, you’ll pass Ait Mizan, Targa, and Imoula en route to the Berber community of Ait Souka.

Along the way, you’ll stop at Tamatert to marvel at the expansive views from ancient irrigation terraces that feed local vegetable crops.

Eventually, you’ll arrive at a local Berber home in Ait Souka, where you can dig into a well-earned traditional lunch with mint tea.

Conclude your adventure by descending through the opposite side of the valley. Pass Taourirt and arrive back at the van that will take you to Marrakech after a glorious day of hiking.

7. Visit The Agafay Desert

Camels hanging out in a group in the Agafay Desert. They have camels on their back and that are standing together on a sunny day.

⭐️ Rating: 4.7/5.0 (358 Reviews) Price: $43.55 per person Duration: 5 hours 📍Meeting Point: Pick up included Operator: The Concept Tour Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

The Agafay Desert is a rocky/sandy oasis (don’t expect to see the vast sand dunes of the Sahara) that sits a mere 40 or 45 minutes outside of Marrakech.

It’s a great place to go if you want to escape the chaos of the city and enjoy stunning views of the Atlas Mountains.

You can visit during the day or at night. However, I think a visit in the evening is one of the top things to do in Marrakech at night.

I mean, you get to go stargazing, you can watch the sunset, and don’t have to deal with the heat/sunburn during one of the best tours of the Agafay Desert .

Sure, you can hire a private driver to take you here. But, I like to make my life easier by booking a Agafay Desert Sunset Camel Ride and Dinner .

You just show up at the designated time and your local guide will whisk you away on an epic adventure where you can learn all about Berber culture.

You’ll even get to visit an argan oil cooperative on the way to the desert, before getting some epic Moroccan tea upon arrival.

You’ll then go on a camel ride through the desert and enjoy a beautiful sunset as the stars twinkle to life in the sky above you.

“Unforgettable experience with a magnificent setting to do with family, as a couple it’s cute or even with children without problem. Pick-up from your hotel, a beautiful camel ride of around twenty minutes but it is more than enough to contemplate the magnificent desert with its sunset. Then we had dinner with a good soup, a good tagine with a good quantity and fruit. I really wasn’t expecting a meal like that. The perfect beautiful campfire. Put your shoes closed or sandals closed and a small fleece for the nightfall.” Paul ( read more reviews now )

At the end of your ride, you’ll be welcomed into a local desert camp where you can enjoy an authentic Moroccan dinner and some delicious traditional desserts.

During your meal, listen to live Berber music and relax around a campfire before arriving back at your hotel at 11:00 pm.

8. Casablanca

The gorgeous outer facade of the Casablanca Mosque is one of the things that you will see as part of the day trips from Marrakech.

⭐️ Rating: 4.4/5.0 (376 Reviews) Price: $39.46 per person Duration: 10 – 12 hours 📍 Meeting Point: Pick up included Operator: Click Excursions Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

Believe it or not, Casablanca is just a 3-hour drive from Marrakech. So, you could easily do a day trip from Marrakech to Casablanca, aka the economic capital of Morocco.

Generally, I suggest at least spending the night in a city to really get a feel for it.

However, I am not a huge fan of Casablanca and feel like this Casablanca day tour gives you the chance to see the main attractions without getting jaded by the size, grit, crime, and lack of transportation that make Casablanca a tough city to visit (just my personal opinion).

There’s no way around it, this will be a long Marrakech day trip and you WILL be spending a lot of time in the car.

But, you’ll get to spend five hours in one of the most iconic cities in Morocco, so I feel like it’s worth it.

Now, your pickup is early. Like, 7:00 am early. But, you’ll leave right from your hotel and head directly towards Casablanca.

After an almost 3-hour drive, arrive in Casablanca and walk along broad boulevards as you marvel at incredible, contemporary architecture.

“We had an amazing time with our guide Abdul and the driver Boja! Everything was well organised and we were able to catch the vibe of Casablanca. Best thing was to visit the beach at the end of the trip. If you’re in Marrakesh do this tour to see the vibrant city of Casablanca!!” Anonymous ( read more reviews now )

Wander through the harbor area, famous for its plazas and covered walkways. Enjoy beautiful modern designs before exploring the maze-like streets of the Medina.

Continue to United Nations Square and Mohammed V Square, before visiting the central market and the royal palace next door.

Experience all that the vibrant Harbors district has to offer before seeing local landmarks like  the Lourdes Notre-Dame Cathedral and the illustrious Hassan II Mosque.

You’ll end the day in the upscale Anfa district, where you can shop for souvenirs at a seaside mall before going back to your hotel.

So while you deffo won’t be able to experience ALL of the city’s highlights, you’ll get a feel for all of the most iconic spots.

9. Palmeraie

Me and boyfriend sitting side by side on red quad bikes on a sunny day in Essaouira. He is wearing a black and white plaid shirt and I am wearing a red jacket and sunglasses.

⭐️ Rating: 4.8/5.0 (3054 Reviews) Price: $28.88 per person Duration: 3 hours 📍 Meeting Point: Pick up included Operator: MENARA QUAD MARRAKECH Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

Just 30 minutes outside the city center you’ll find Palmeraie. It’s this super cool palm tree oasis on the northern end of the city that consists of thousands upon thousands of trees.

This oasis is so big that it is 5 miles long and covers 54 square miles. So, the best way to enjoy one of the most unique places in Marrakech is to ride a camel or quad bike through it.

Personally, I would love to try this Quad Bike Tour to a Palm Oasis and the Jbilat Desert . Not only is the experience well-reviewed but it looks hella fun.

Essentially, you’ll get pick up from your hotel, drive around 25 minutes to the oasis, and then get a 10-minute safety briefing before setting on your quad with a helmet and safety googles.

Ride through this desert oasis for an incredible two hours and enjoy stunning views, with circuits available for both new and advanced riders.

“The activity was quite nice, the only downside is that the equipment (helmet and quad) is a little (a lot) worn. On the other hand, the walk is pleasant, the guide is rather attentive and special mention for the superb photo session worthy of a photographer ^^ Tea break is appreciated ☺️.” Jodie ( read more reviews now )

During the trip, you’ll get two small breaks where you can sip on mint tea, eat bread with honey, and take lots of photos before returning to Marrakech.

View of two billboard signs and a ferris wheel and palm trees in the background in Agadir.

Agadir is another major city in Morocco that is just a 3-hour drive from Marrakech (do you sense a theme here with everything being 3 hours away?).

Honestly, most people skip Agadir during their trip to Morocco. However, I think that’s a shame since I have been to Agadir and think it has a lot to offer.

Not only can you relax on a 10 kilometer beach (touristy but nice), but you can take a walk on the beachfront promenade before marveling at the historic grandeur of the Kasbah.

It’s a fortress from the 16th-century that is home to stunning views.

It’s an excellent place to stop before visiting the Agadir Memorial Museum. During your visit, learn all  about the 1960 earthquake that basically destroyed the city.

Afterward, explore the markets at Souk El Had d’Agadir so that you can shop for cool things like spices, clothes, ceramics, jewelry, and more.

For the best experience, and to see as much of the city as quickly as possible, book this full day trip to Agadir .

You’ll get picked up from your hotel at 7:30 am and stop for a quick breakfast before arriving in Agadir. You’ll begin your day at Crocoparc and marvel at 325 Nile crocodiles.

Afterward, visit Agadir Ufla archaeological site and enjoy some stunning views before heading to the Kasbah of Ufla.

Next, visit gorgeous Agadir beach, walk along the promenade, and grab lunch before doing a guided tour of the Souk (market).

“We were collected from the hotel by Imad the driver and guide. We had two stops before Agadir. 1st stop was a coffee shop and 2nd to visit the crocodile park. The journey was pleasant with lot to see. IMAD the driver was well spoken in different languages, explained about all the sites we visited. I will definitely recommend.” Karina ( read more reviews now )

You’ll end the day at the Marina and can explore a commercial port filled with cool restaurants and bars before continuing back to Marrakech.

It’s a pretty fast paced tour but you’ll definitely experience most of the top attractions in the city. It’s also worth noting that the entrance fee to Crocoparc is not included in the price of the tour.

Just an hour away from Marrakech by car, Asni is a quaint little town that is home to some breathtaking mountains.

For anyone who loves hiking, Asni is one of the best day trips from Marrakech since it is the ideal place from which to set off into the Atlas Mountains.

You’ll also love that a diverse network of trails are available, including everything from leisurely strolls to arduous climbs.

Feel free to enlist the help of a local guide or venture out on your own during one of the best day tours from Marrakech.

Also be sure to explore the surrounding Berber villages, where you can immerse yourself in indigenous culture and local traditions.

While some villages are reachable by car, others require a hike, like the 2-hour hike you can do during this day trip to Asni and Imlil from Marrakech .

It’s an incredible hike near Imlil that will take you all along the base of Mount Toubkal.

“We had a great day with Hassan our great tour guide who took us for a walk through the mountains, waterfalls and villages of Imlil area. We made a tea break in a beautiful Kasba watching the landscape from above. At the and there was a tasty lunch😀” Anat ( read more reviews now)

Plus, if you do this tour on a Saturday, you’ll get to explore a traditional local market in Asni too.

12. Ouzoud Waterfalls

Want to visit the tallest waterfalls in North Africa? If so then sign up for this epic group tour now .

They stand at an astounding 110 meters (360 feet) tall and are only about a 2.5 hour drive from Marrakech.

I did a day trip here and thought it was fun hiking down to the waterfall and doing a fun local boat ride to the base of the falls.

I also loved that I got picked up directly from my hotel and that it was a small group of around 10 people.

We also got to see and photograph some local monkeys before started to climb down towards the waterfall.

“The driver picked us up at 8:30 to start our journey to Ouzoud waterfalls so we could meet our guide there! We had a great day! We saw the waterfalls, wild monkeys which we gave them peanuts, visited a cooperative where they make Amlou, Honey etc…. and finished with a delicious lunch at a restaurant located on the mountain with the view on the waterfalls. Defo recommend this trip, just be ready to walk a lot, and hike. Wear good shoes and comfortable clothing, take water, snacks and anything to entertain yourself for the road as it takes 3h to reach the waterfalls.” Leila ( read more reviews now )

Yes, it was a bit touristy, but the traditional boat ride offered stellar views of the falls. I also actually really enjoyed the food I had at the local restaurant.

The service was great, the decor was charming, and you got a bunch of courses included with your meal. I had the Berber Omelet and it was really tasty.

The views of the falls are also great, but do remember that lunch is not included on the price of the tour.

After lunch, you start to climb out of the falls and get to enjoy panoramas at the top before heading back.

It was a lovely day trip from Marrakech and I would 100% do it again.

13. Ourika Valley

⭐️ Rating: 4.6/5.0 (3442 Reviews) Price: $17.47 per person Duration: 8 -10 hours 📍 Meeting Point: Pick up included Operator: Click Excursions Details: Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

Escape the chaos of the city and enjoy the natural beauty of Ourika Valley.

After all, this magical place is located just 45 minutes away from Marrakech and allows you to explore local Berber Villages, gorgeous waterfalls, and more.

To visit, try this Ourika Valley & Atlas Mountains Day Tour . You’ll venture deep into the Atlas Mountains during this incredible day tour from Marrakech.

After getting a quick and easy hotel pick up, soak up the breathtaking scenery of lush meadows interspersed with traditional Berber villages from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Opting for a Monday/Thursday tour affords you the unique opportunity to explore a roadside souk and shop for lots of cool souvenirs.

“We had a great day out, beautiful scenery. Travelling to and from Ourika valley was comfortable and our driver was helpful and courteous. Anouar our guide was great and as it was a bit steep in places he helped my wife to navigate the climb. He was also good at taking some excellent photos of us along the way. The restaurant we stopped at was ok by the side of the river bank.” Michael ( read more reviews now )

See orchards brimming with fruit, terraced vegetable plots, and villages precariously perched on the slopes of steep hills.

Admire the incredible effort of the Berbers, who transported building materials up steep mountains to construct small, cliffside dwellings and cultivate the land.

Travel through a palm-filled valley as you follow the Ourika River and see Setti Fatma waterfall before heading back to Marrakech.

14. Essaouira

The iconic arched bridge with the boats is just one of the scenes you will see when you head out to Essaouria as part of day trips from Marrakech.

⭐️ Rating: 4.3/5.0 (78 Reviews) Price: $20.57 per person Duration: 10 hours 📍 Meeting Point: Pick up included Operator: Atlas Desert Expeditions Trips Details; Read more on Get Your Guide Now!

I listed Essaouira first as one of the best day trips from Marrakech for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I live here and ADORE this super windy, super quiet beachside town.

It’s super chill and Essaouira is different from Marrakech since it’s very cool (temperature-wise) and you can relax on the beach, go for a swim, or try surfing/kite surfing.

Otherwise, just go for a walk on the extensive beachfront promenade here before hitting up the Medina to go shopping in Essaouira . It’s small, super navigable, and a lot less congested than the one in Marrakech.

So, go for a wander and check out local landmarks like the Old Scala, the Scala du Port, and even a cool Jewish Museum too.

Now, you may be wondering, should I book a day tour to Essaouira from Marrakech?

Personally, I don’t think it’s necessary. You definitely don’t need a guide to explore the city and can easily hop on a Supratours bus that will drop you off right near the Medina.

Plus, Supratours runs like five buses a day to Essaouira, so you’ll have no problem getting there and back. As a result, you could also visit Marrakech as a day trip from Essaouira .

Tickets are also very affordable at around 100/120 Dirham each way ($10.00-$12.00) and the trip will generally take 3/3.5 hours each way.

It also gives you the freedom to take the first bus out and the last bus back so that you can stay in the town a little longer.

But, if you want to make your life easier you can sign up for this tour here . They’ll pick you up/drop you off at your hotel and will take you directly to Essaouira.

“The trip was great and well organized! Good communication on beforehand and during the trip. Ibrahim messaged us before, confirming the pick up location and after to check in how the day trip went. Faissal was an excellent driver! He got us there and back safely. We made a few stops along the way: a restaurant, an argan oil factory/shop and on the way back the same restaurant. Essaouira is such a lovely beach town. We enjoyed its beach and scenery. I definitely recommend this trip. It was good value for money.” Hannan ( read more reviews now )

The price also works out to be about the same (or cheaper) than taking the bus.

But, you can get delayed by late travelers and will have to sit in the van while you pick everyone up at their Marrakech hotels.

Plus, if you do the group tour , you’ll probably get to stop along the way and take photos of the cute goats sitting in Argan trees. If you like Essaouira, you could even spend the night at one of the best hostels in Essaouira .

15. Todras Gorge and Dades Gorge

View of the red rocks of a gorge in Morocco with water running through it.

If you’re drawn to natural beauty and breathtaking landscapes then consider adding Dades Gorge and Todra Gorge to your list of the best day trips from Marrakech.

The drive to these destinations requires a lengthy trip across the Atlas Mountains. Sometimes 6 hours so this may be a bit too far for some.

But, the extended journey will be worth it due to the stunning panoramic views and spectacular terrain you’ll see along the way.

Upon reaching Dades Gorge, visitors can wander through the dramatic rock formations and enjoy the picturesque scenery.

After all, this gorge is famed for its towering rock walls which extend upwards nearly 300 meters in some spots.

A river meanders through the valley and adds a picturesque charm to this amazing place.

Afterwards, visit Todras Gorge with its slender canyon and towering 160 meter tall walls.

Hiking through Todra Gorge alongside a river that curves through the valley and enjoy the awesome beauty of this natural forces at work.

16. Imouzzer

Located near Paradise Valley (just outside of Agadir), Immouzer is home to incredible cascading waterfalls that are unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

To visit, you’ll need to endure a 3-hour car ride. But, upon arrival, visit the Cascades d’Imouzzer by hiking through lush forests to the base of the waterfalls.

Feel free to do so either on your own or with an expert guide.

Other fun activities to enjoy include rock climbing, rappelling, and so much more since Paradise Valley is an oasis of tranquility that you will never want to leave.

Afterward, relax by the pools of Asif Tamraght Gorge and stand in awe of Tinkert Wadi waterfalls, which are only visible during the winter.

17. Lalla Takerkoust Lake

⭐️ Rating: 5.0/5.0 (4 Reviews) Price: $97.00 per person Duration: 1 day 📍 Meeting Point: Pick up included Operator: Caravane Du Grand Erg Details: Read more on Viator Now!

If you drive just an hour away from Marrakech, you’ll find this beautiful lake with sweeping views of the surrounding Atlas Mountains.

Visit during this private day trip to Lake Takerkoust,Asni and Ourika Valley from Marrakech and you’ll start the day with a 9:00 am pick up from your hotel.

You’ll travel through the Ourika valley, where you’ll see stunning waterfalls and charming Berber villages before stopping at a traditional Berber home.

Your host Malika will teach you how to prepare traditional Moroccan tea and bread before introducing you to the nuances of the Berber culture.

If you want, set out on a quick camel ride before meeting a local guide for a hike through Ourika Valley.

“This tour was amazing! We got an early pick up by a knowledge and friends guide. Before arriving at the foot of the Atlas mountain we stop at two Berber shops were the people gave us an education on how the rugs and Argan oil were made. The waterfalls and hike was spectacular and breathtaking.” Javier ( read more reviews now )

You’ll see Setti Fatma waterfall before digging into lunch at a lovely, riverside restaurant.

Afterward, travel through the valley of Asni-Tahanaout and take in lovely mountain views from 1400 meters in the area before visiting the Kik plateau.

You’ll then make your way back to Marrakech and pass the dam at Lala-Takerkoust after one of the best day tours from Marrakech.

If you are looking for the absolute best on this list of day trips from Marrakech, then I would day pick the Hot Air Balloon ride 🎈. Not only is it an experience that you will remember for life but the views are really amazing. Definitely something that you would need to keep your camera 📷 ready for! So what are you waiting for? For travelers with an unquenchable thirst for desert exploration, a visit to the Agafay Desert stands out as a must-see destination near Marrakech. While the majestic Sahara holds an undeniable allure, the Agafay Desert offers a unique advantage by allowing for a convenient day trip experience that is otherwise challenging to achieve in the vastness of the Sahara.

This hidden gem unveils a world of raw beauty, immersing visitors in an otherworldly ambiance that leaves a lasting impression. Whether you prefer the rhythmic sway of a camel ride through the arid terrain or the exhilarating thrill of quad biking across the desert , the Agafay Desert caters to various interests and preferences.

As you venture into the Ourika Valley , you’ll encounter charming villages dotting the landscape, enveloped by enchanting cherry and almond orchards that lend a picturesque allure to the surroundings.

One of the remarkable aspects of the Ourika Valley is its preservation of Berber heritage and traditions. The Berber people, the original inhabitants of the region, continue to reside in the valley, living much as their ancestors did centuries ago. Exploring the Ourika Valley offers a unique opportunity to delve into the vibrant tapestry of Berber life, gaining insight into their customs, crafts, and daily routines. Depending on the day of your visit, you might chance upon a bustling Berber market, where vendors display an array of goods every Monday, showcasing the vibrant colors and flavors of the region. Beyond the cultural encounters, the Ourika Valley boasts breathtaking river and mountain scenery, beckoning adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike. The meandering river, with its crystal-clear waters, presents an idyllic setting for relaxation and contemplation. As you explore further, the Setti Fatma waterfalls emerge as a true natural wonder. Numerous hiking trails originate from this point, inviting explorers to embark on exhilarating journeys through the Atlas mountains, each path leading to new vantage points and breathtaking views.

Nestled at the northern fringes of the city, this verdant oasis serves as a dreamlike backdrop for thrilling adventures, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a world of excitement and natural beauty. While the presence of resorts and golf courses nearby may give the impression of a tourist-oriented facade, it is important to recognize that the Marrakech Palmeraie holds a rich historical significance that dates back to the 12th century.

As you step into the Marrakech Palmeraie, a sense of tranquility envelops you. The lush greenery of the palm groves offers respite from the city’s bustling energy, transporting you to a realm of serenity and natural splendor. This idyllic setting sets the stage for an array of thrilling outdoor activities that cater to different preferences and interests. Embarking on a camel ride through the palm-fringed trails provides a unique perspective, allowing you to traverse the landscape in a time-honored manner, much like the Berber nomads of old. The rhythmic sway of the camel’s gait and the gentle rustle of the palm leaves create an immersive experience, evoking a sense of timelessness and adventure.

For those seeking a more adrenaline-fueled escapade, quad biking presents an exhilarating option. Roaring through the palm groves on an all-terrain vehicle, you’ll experience a thrilling rush as you navigate the winding paths and open spaces, your senses ignited by the stunning surroundings. The juxtaposition of the vibrant green palms against the clear blue sky paints a vivid picture of natural beauty, amplifying the excitement of the adventure.

Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca with its towering minaret beside the Atlantic Ocean at dusk

Ranked alongside Marrakech, Casablanca stands as one of the most renowned destinations in Morocco, easily accessible for a fulfilling day trip. Situated on the northern coast, Casablanca serves as the country’s largest city, primarily functioning as a vibrant commercial and industrial hub. A visit to Casablanca unveils a dynamic cityscape where modernity intertwines with tradition, offering a range of notable attractions to explore.

Casablanca’s Medina, a bustling old quarter, presents a fascinating labyrinthine experience that exceeds even the chaotic charm of Marrakech. Wandering through its narrow streets, you’ll encounter a vibrant tapestry of sights, sounds, and aromas, immersing yourself in the bustling atmosphere of everyday life.

In contrast to the medina, the Place Mohammed V stands as a testament to the city’s more contemporary identity. Located within the modern French colonial part of Casablanca, this spacious square exudes a distinct European influence, characterized by elegant Art Deco architecture and a sense of openness. Strolling along the streets surrounding Place Mohammed V provides a glimpse into Casablanca’s cosmopolitan charm, with stylish cafes, boutiques, and restaurants offering a taste of the modern Moroccan lifestyle.

However, the crowning jewel of any Marrakech to Casablanca day trip is the magnificent Hassan II Mosque, a breathtaking architectural masterpiece and the second-largest mosque in the world. Although relatively young, having been completed in 1993, the mosque’s sheer scale and striking design command attention and reverence. Perched on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, its minaret soars to dizzying heights, while intricate details adorn the interior, showcasing the craftsmanship of Moroccan artisans. A visit to the Hassan II Mosque offers a profound spiritual experience and a profound appreciation for the fusion of traditional Islamic architecture and modern engineering.

Camel caravan trekking through the sweeping dunes of the Sahara Desert at sunrise.

While not feasible for a day trip from Marrakech, a journey to the Sahara Desert deserves a notable mention. The allure of the vast and mystical Sahara can not be denied, but its considerable distance from Marrakech necessitates careful planning and allocation of several days in your Morocco itinerary. The journey to the Sahara Desert spans approximately nine hours by car, emphasizing the immense expanse that separates these two distinct landscapes.

To fully immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring beauty of the Sahara, it is recommended to embark on a three-day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga , allowing ample time to savor the unique experiences this iconic desert has to offer. The tour typically entails a mesmerizing camel ride, traversing the undulating golden sands as you delve deeper into the heart of the desert. The rhythmic sway of the camel’s gait, accompanied by the silence of the dunes, creates an atmosphere of tranquility and introspection, transporting you to a world untouched by time.

As twilight approaches, climbing the Erg Chebbi Dunes unveils a breathtaking spectacle. With every step, you ascend to new heights, granting an unparalleled vantage point from which to witness the ethereal desert sunset. The shifting hues of the sky, bathed in shades of crimson, gold, and purple, create a captivating tableau, leaving an indelible imprint on your memory.

A highlight of the Sahara Desert experience is the opportunity to spend a night in a Bedouin camp. Nestled amidst the tranquil dunes, the camp provides a sanctuary amidst the vastness of the desert, where you can marvel at a tapestry of stars illuminating the night sky. In this remote oasis, you gain a deeper appreciation for the nomadic lifestyle, forging a connection to the ancient traditions that have shaped the Sahara for centuries.

Marrakech Day Trips Map

#1 The Atlas Mountains

A visit to the Atlas Mountains is an unmissable highlight when in Marrakech. This majestic range, crowned by Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, offers a stunning contrast to the lively city life. As you journey through the Atlas Mountains, the scenery constantly changes, from sprawling valleys to rugged peaks and traditional Berber villages. It’s an ideal escape to experience the natural beauty of Morocco and a break from city life.

Exploring this vast area by rental car is perfect, offering the freedom to stop at breathtaking viewpoints or local markets. Don’t forget to pause in one of the picturesque villages for a traditional Berber meal. For the adventurous, hiking in the Atlas Mountains is a definite highlight of their Moroccan adventure.

For those short on time or preferring an organized tour, there are plenty of options. These tours showcase the best of the Atlas Mountains, often including visits to the Ourika Valley and views of Mount Toubkal.

Atlas Mountains

#2 Cactus THIEMANN

Cactus THIEMANN, a unique day trip from Marrakech, is a haven for nature enthusiasts and those interested in botany and landscape architecture. The garden, boasting over 150 different cactus species primarily from Latin America, is the life’s work of Hans Thiemann, who moved to Marrakech in 1964 and used his agricultural expertise to create this botanical paradise. The family decided to open this extraordinary garden to visitors, where you can admire cacti ranging from delicate species to impressive giants over 80 years old and up to 8 meters tall.

A tip for visitors: check opening times as the garden is not open daily. It is located about 25 minutes from Marrakech’s medina. Nearby is Le Relais de Marrakech, one of Morocco’s best yet affordable campsites, ideal for camper travelers. From here, you can easily visit Cactus THIEMANN on foot.

#3 The Agafay Desert

Merely 30 kilometers and a swift 40-minute journey from the bustling city of Marrakech, the Agafay Desert emerges as an extraordinary and breathtaking alternative to the vast Sahara. This unique desert landscape defies the traditional imagery of rolling sand dunes; Agafay is something entirely different.

Characterized by its stark, rocky expanse, the Agafay Desert resembles a lunar landscape more than a sandy desert. It’s a compelling and rugged terrain that invites you to capture its beauty through the lens of your camera, lose yourself in the vastness of its horizon, and marvel at its stark and raw beauty. An awe-inspiring sight within this terrain is the Atlas Mountains, often adorned with snow-capped peaks in the winter, creating a dramatic and picturesque backdrop.

In this mesmerizing stone desert, a plethora of activities awaits. Whether you’re seeking the thrill of camel treks, the excitement of quad biking, or the tranquility of yoga and meditation, Agafay offers it all against the backdrop of its impressive moon-like landscape. The desert is accessible for a fulfilling day trip from Marrakech. But to truly immerse yourself in its majesty, consider extending your adventure into a two-day excursion with an overnight stay.

We had the pleasure of spending a night at Inara Camp , an enchanting luxury camp with elegantly outfitted glamping tents situated amidst the desert’s vastness. Our experience with Inara Camp in the Agafay Desert was nothing short of magical, seamlessly blending the thrill of adventure with the peacefulness of the expansive landscape, creating a truly unparalleled desert experience.

#4 The Tinmel Mosque

Located a 2.5-hour drive from Marrakech, the Tinmel Mosque, a spectacularly beautiful 12th-century mosque south of Marrakech, reflects the historical richness of the Almohad dynasty. The mosque, partly in ruins and partly intact, is recognized as an architectural gem.

This mosque stands out with its unique design, featuring a minaret uniquely positioned around the mihrab, a rarity in mosque architecture. The prayer hall, divided into nine naves, is characterized by horseshoe arches and is beautifully adorned with domes and detailed stonework.

Sadly, the September 2023 earthquake caused significant damage to this historical site. Key parts of the mosque collapsed, resulting in considerable loss of cultural heritage. The Moroccan government has committed to restoration, but it will be a lengthy process. Until then, the Tinmel Mosque can only be admired from the outside.

Tinmel Mosque

#5 Ouarzazate and the Atlas Studios

Ouarzazate, known as the ‘Hollywood of Morocco’, is about a 3.5-hour drive from Marrakech. Famous for the impressive Atlas Studios, one of the world’s largest film studios, it has been a filming location for ‘Gladiator’, ‘The Mummy’, and ‘Game of Thrones’, among others.

Visitors to the Atlas Studios can tour film sets, offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the movie industry. The sets, deceptively real from afar, reveal their construction of foam and other materials up close. The studios are a vital part of Ouarzazate’s economy and culture, hosting 20 to 50 foreign film and television productions annually.

In Ouarzazate itself, the historic Kasbah Taourirt, featured in movies like ‘Gladiator’ and ‘Prince of Persia’, is a must-see. However, due to the September 2023 earthquake, it suffered damage and is undergoing restoration.

Kasbah Taourirt Ouarzazate

#6 Aït Ben Haddou

The picturesque town of Aït Ben Haddou, nestled just north of Ouarzazate, has hosted numerous film crews, making it a world-famous destination. Its photogenic streets have attracted tourists from all over, and we too have explored the scenic alleys of this town. The town is beautifully constructed against a hillside, allowing visitors to wander through its narrow streets and reach the top within minutes, where a breathtaking panoramic view of the region awaits.

To visit, park your car along the main road and cross to the other side either via the bridge or by stepping on the stones in the water. From there, you can ascend the hill through streets lined with vendors and souvenir shops. As you reach the summit, the Atlas Mountains, a lush palm grove, and an expansive landscape unfold before you. If you’re visiting with a 4WD, you might opt to drive across the river to the other side.

After touring the tourist-frequented Aït Ben Haddou, if you wish to see a similar but less well-maintained town, drive a few kilometers north to Tamdaght, home to an ancient kasbah ruin.

Ait Ben Haddou

#7 Essaouira

About a 3-hour drive from Marrakech, Essaouira is a popular coastal town known for its laid-back atmosphere and artistic flair. The walled old town houses one of Morocco’s most beautiful medinas, featuring narrow lanes with blue houses, picturesque shops, cozy cafes, and delightful restaurants.

No visit to Essaouira is complete without strolling along the historic ramparts, offering stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. Fans of ‘Game of Thrones’ might recognize these fortifications, as they were used as a filming location for the series. The harbor of Essaouira, with its iconic blue fishing boats, is also a must-visit. You can watch the day’s catch being brought in and savor fresh seafood at local stalls.

Essaouira is also a beloved destination among surfing enthusiasts. Known as the ‘Wind City of Africa’ due to its strong winds, the city is perfect for surfing and windsurfing, with equipment rental and lessons readily available.

Essaouira

Safi, a lesser-known yet intriguing coastal city north of Essaouira, is celebrated for its pottery tradition. The Collines des Potiers, or Potters’ Hill, in Safi is a must-visit for anyone interested in traditional Moroccan ceramics. Here, artisans use ancient yet refined techniques to craft exquisite pottery. Although traditional wood-fired kilns have been replaced by gas-fired ones, the craftsmanship remains impressively meticulous.

Another highlight in Safi is the National Ceramics Museum, located in a pedestrian zone near the medina. The museum showcases an extensive collection of ceramics, some of which are considered prime examples of Safi’s pottery. A visit here offers deeper insight into the history and techniques of local ceramic production.

Also noteworthy in Safi is the Kechla fort, a historic Portuguese fortress. While it’s not formally open to visitors, local guides often lead tours here. They assist in navigating to the best vantage points and can enrich your visit with tales of Safi’s past. The views from the top are simply stunning.

One of our favorite places in the Marrakech region is the palm oasis of Skoura. Unlike the bustling streets and tourist spots of Marrakech, Skoura offers a tranquil escape into serenity. The silence here, punctuated only by the rustling of countless palm trees, is truly overwhelming.

Skoura, a lush palm grove dotted with small fields where locals cultivate vegetables, narrow irrigation canals, and quaint farmers’ houses, is a sight to behold. Amidst these are grand kasbahs, imposing castle-like forts from centuries past. While many have fallen into disrepair, a few have been salvaged and transformed into charming hotels.

We recommend exploring Skoura by bike to fully immerse yourself in its unique atmosphere and witness the beauty of these kasbahs. As Skoura isn’t overrun with tourists on bikes, we were greeted enthusiastically by locals and chased by children waving at us, a refreshing change from the city’s street vendors!

The crown jewel of Skoura is Kasbah Amridil, once featured on the old 50 dirham note. The kasbah, open to visitors, consists of two competing parts, each claiming to be the original. However, the right side is the oldest.

#10 Imi n’Ifri

Imi n’Ifri, sometimes spelled Iminifri, located in the Atlas Mountains east of Marrakech, was our first stop after picking up our rental car in Marrakech. This natural bridge spanning a gorge is a spectacular sight, formed over centuries.

Local legends suggest the bridge was formed by two lovers holding hands, turned to stone, but more likely, the hollow was carved out by the flowing water beneath. Standing on the bridge is impressive, but the best views are from below. Descend into the gorge and navigate through the valley under the enormous bridge. Bats, stalagmites, and massive rocks create a magical atmosphere.

With a generous tip, a local guide can lead you through tunnels to the best vantage points over the gorge. The path is well-marked, but the tunnels are hidden gems best found with local guidance.

day trips from marrakech

#11 Cascades d’Ouzoud

The Cascades d’Ouzoud in the Atlas Mountains are one of Morocco’s most spectacular natural attractions and popular with both locals and tourists. These waterfalls, cascading over 100 meters, are especially striking when viewed from the paths leading to their base.

Located about 150 kilometers from Marrakech, they’re an ideal addition to a road trip through the Atlas Mountains. While access without private transport is challenging, the journey is well worth it. Many visitors combine a trip to the Cascades d’Ouzoud with other destinations like Imi n’Ifri.

The area around the waterfalls offers various accommodations, restaurants, and paid parking, retaining its charm despite its touristic nature.

Ouzoud Falls

#12 Todra Gorge

Todra Gorge, known for its beautiful mountain hikes and an impressive 300-meter-deep canyon, is best visited early in the morning before the arrival of tourist buses. Pay attention to the water in the gorge, as this is where a river originates. Look for bubbles indicating water emerging from the ground. This water is incredibly pure, so don’t forget to fill your water bottle.

The gorge is not only a fantastic walking trail but also popular for rock climbing, with routes for both beginners and advanced climbers.

We chose to hike through the mountains instead. The clearly visible trail at the end of Todra Gorge marks the start of a roughly 3-hour hike. While the path is evident at first, it becomes less so higher up. Follow the trails made by nomads’ donkeys for guidance. The descent can be tricky, but the locals have marked the path with stone piles. The hike is challenging but rewarding with stunning views and the tranquility of the mountains. The trail ends in the village at the start of Todra Gorge, near Les Jardins de Gorges hotel and restaurant, perfect for a post-hike meal or drink.

day trips from marrakech

#13 Kasbah Glaoui in Telouet

Telouet, once home to the powerful Moroccan Glaoui family, is now marked by a stunning castle ruin. We weren’t sure what to expect from Kasbah Glaoui , but its architecture took us by surprise.

We wandered around the ruins, imagining the castle’s grandeur decades ago and its rapid decline since the 1950s. However, more than just ruins awaited us. For a small fee, you can enter the palace and find beautifully restored parts of the castle.

The kasbah, though small, impresses with typical Moroccan mosaics, wood carvings, and detailed ceilings. A niche also offers a beautiful view of the surrounding hilly landscape. If you found the palaces in Marrakech beautiful but too crowded, a visit to this kasbah is a must. It may be smaller, but its architecture rivals the splendor of Marrakech.

Kasbah Telouet

#14 Ourika Valley

Just south of Marrakech lies the Ourika Valley, a popular weekend destination for locals. The landscape is stunning, with the snow-capped peaks of the Atlas Mountains in the background.

We visited the small town of Setti Fatma, starting point for hikes to seven waterfalls. The town is bustling with Moroccan tourists and plastic tourist restaurants, even in winter, so quickly move beyond it for a short hike to the waterfalls. Beware of men along the way claiming they manage the last parking space and you can’t drive further; they’re just directing you to their paid parking. Trust your navigation to find the hiking trails’ start – maps.me is quite accurate – and park at one of the spots nearby.

There are two paths upward, both starting among riverside restaurants. One quickly leads away from the eateries toward the second waterfall, while the other meanders through stalls to the first waterfall. After the first waterfall, the two paths converge, and a climb to the next waterfalls begins. The trail becomes more challenging, offering quieter enjoyment of the beautiful mountain views.

Tip: Go early to share the space with fewer people. By midday, the first waterfall can get crowded, complete with a live music band.

day trips from marrakech

#15 Erg Chebbi in the Sahara Desert

Riding camels through endless sand dunes, witnessing breathtaking sunsets and sunrises, and staying overnight in a nomadic camp are essential Moroccan experiences. While Erg Chebbi is too far from Marrakech for a day trip, it’s offered as two- or three-day excursions from the city by Marrakech tour agencies.

Erg Chebbi was a highlight of our Morocco trip, so if possible, don’t miss it. Traveling in winter, we experienced how hot desert days turn into ice-cold nights, even finding ice on our tent in the morning. However, the tents are surprisingly warm, with well-insulated private tents in most camps at Erg Chebbi, featuring large beds and thick blankets for a comfortable night. We chose a desert experience near Merzouga, but another option is the nomadic camps at Erg Chigaga in the south.

The best day trips from marrakech: ultimate guide.

Cazzy Magennis

Marrakech is a wonderful city that’s bursting with amazing things to do and see, but if you’re spending a few days in Marrakech, then you’re going to want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and explore the amazing surroundings that Marrakech has to offer. Well, to help inspire you, I’ve put together a guide on the best day trips from Marrakech!

Travellerspoint

Lunch in the Agafay Desert

The Agafay Desert is a very cool place located just outside Marrakech. Sure, it’s not as amazing as the Sahara Desert, I’m sure, but you can reach it in 30 minutes from Marrakech city centre, so it’s a perfect day trip.

One of the relay cool things to do in the Agafay desert is to have a traditional Moroccan lunch in the middle of the desert. Brad and I did this tour with Musement and it truly was awesome from start to finish. We drove into the desert and had lunch in the middle of nowhere. The spot we visited even had a swimming pool in the middle of the desert!

The food was plentiful and crazy delicious and what I liked about this tour is that it started at around 11 and finished around 3, so you didn’t feel “worn out” afterwards, which you can do with some long day trips from Marrakech.

This tour is also suitable for everyone. It’s a perfect option if you are travelling as a couple , as you can make it romantic, but it’s also great for families and friends too.

You can book the exact tour we took right here.

Buggy Tour in the Agafay Desert

If you love adrenaline and want thrills, then the best way to see the Agafay desert is 100% driving through it in your own buggy or quad bike. This was one of the most fun tours I’ve done ever (not just in Marrakech!) Brad and I did this tour with Dunes & Deserts , and it truly was a lot of fun. I thought I’d be nervous driving the buggy, but I adjusted verrry well (Brad might say too well, he told me to slow down a couple of times :p).

This style of tour immerses you in the Agafay Desert as you’re driving through the unique landscape. We also stopped at a traditional Berber village for a traditional Berber breakfast and mint tea and the whole experience was amazing.

You can book our exact tour here, and you can get 10% off when you use the code DBTF10. Yay!

Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride

This experience was without doubt one of the most magical of all my travels. We went on an epic sunrise hot air balloon ride in Marrakech with Klook.

It was an early start (but not too early since we went in the winter season when the sun rises later), but it was totally worth it. The whole experience was magical and I saw some of the most beautiful views ever. Afterwards we even got treated to a traditional Berber breakfast and this is one of the best day trips from Marrakech that you HAVE to do.

Actually, if you can only achieve one day trip from Marrakech on your adventures, then make this the number one choice.

You can check out the exact tour we did here.

Of course this tour is a little pricey, but it’s worth every penny for this bucket list experience.

Stay overnight in a luxury desert camp

This is another of the great day trips from Marrakech and Brad and I did “half of this”. Basically we visited a luxury desert camp for lunch, got to chill by the pool etc, and didn’t even realise that staying out there was an option. The host showed us the rooms and they’re amazing.

The whole atmosphere and luxury was awesome and if you’ve got at least one night to spare then I 100% you spend a night camping in the desert. Light pollution is nil here and the views of the stars are amazing!

This is the luxury desert camp (Inara Camp) we visited and you can book to stay there online.

Other practical information

When is the best time to visit marrakech .

The great thing about visiting Marrakech is that it’s truly an all year round destination. Most people visit during the months of May/June as the temperatures are in the 30s, but not the extreme heat of the summer (which can hit 60!). But, Bradley and I visited in the winter season in January and I found the weather to be perfect. We actually had highs of 27 degrees C and this was perfect!

Of course if you visit in winter too, you’ll have cheaper prices on both flights, accommodation and most likely activities.

How long should you spend in Marrakech?

Marrakech city centre itself has lots of great things to do, but it can become a bit “stuffy” after a few days. However, that’s why it’s best to take all these awesome day trips from Marrakech, so you get a taste of Morocco in general. So, if you include sightseeing the city and partaking in these 4 awesome day trips from Marrakech, then I suggest you spend 1 week in Marrakech.

hot air balloon

Other day trips from Marrakech

There are a couple of other day trips in Marrakech you can undertake that we didn’t do, (although wish we did) and these include:

  • Day trip to the seaside town of Essaouira : This is where Game Of Thrones was filmed and honestly A LOT of people recommend we go there. We ran out of time. But it’s super cheap to do a day tour there (check this tour out), or you can get the train from Marrakech city centre too.
  • Sahara Desert visit : okay this requires 3 extra days and a lot of effort. It takes about 10-12 hours to get to the Sarah desert from Marrakech, and that’s assuming you’re only spending one night there. So whilst it’s an awesome activity, it’s an expensive and time consuming one. If you do decide to do it, you can book tours online, like this one.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post on the best day trips from Marrakech, and hopefully you’ve started planning your amazing adventures . If you’ve got anymore questions or comments, then simply drop a comment below and I’ll get back to you.

Top 7 Day Trips From Marrakech

Marrakech is a desert paradise unlike any other, full of history, mystery and romance. Worlds away from your average holiday, the Red City will introduce your senses to new wonders around every pisé corner. We’d happily wander these streets for days on end, but then we’d miss out on all the incredible sights and experiences that surround the city as well. From mountain ranges and deserts to waterfalls and ancient villages, there are day trips from Marrakech that will light a spark in the heart of any traveller.

You might happily wake up at dawn and return to your villa long after dinner, or you might prefer adventures less than an hour from your doorstep. Either way, Marrakech is your ideal home base. In this blog, we’ve gathered our top recommendations for the best day-trips from the city, each awaiting eager explorers like yourself.

1. Essaouira

day trips from marrakech

You don’t see much, or any, of the sea in Marrakech. But a mere three hours away in the town of Essaouira, you can enjoy the sound of waves hitting sandy shores and breathe in the salty, fresh air of the Atlantic. Located right on the water, Essaouira is not your traditional beach-destination. Most days, the winds blow much too hard for anyone to relax on the warm sands. Known as ‘The Windy City of Africa’, the town instead attracts crowds of windsurfers to its beautiful shores.

Rather than lounging on the beach, you’ll want to visit Essaouira for the city’s fascinating culture and unique character. Much more laid back than the bustling Marrakech, Essaouira is undeniably Moroccan – yet there is nowhere else quite like it in the country. The city is famous for its fortified inner white-and-blue medina , where palm-lined streets with colourful boutiques, fascinating museums and art galleries abound.

This old town is small and easy enough to navigate on foot. All roads in the medina lead to its main square by the waterfront, where views of the gorgeous harbour and miles-worth of sandy beaches paint a spectacular image. We can certainly see why the city was named Essaouira, which means ‘Little Picture’ in Arabic. Along the ramparts that enclose the city, you can still spot the old canons that are left over from when the city was a Portuguese military fortress. Walking on these walls is also the best way to soak up the spectacular views of the city and ocean beyond.

2. Ourika Valley

The Ourika Valley tends to be a much welcome escape from the scorching desert heat of Marrakech. Just an hour drive south of the city, it’s one of the most convenient day-trips from the city. This verdant valley stretches for 68 glorious kilometres in the shade of the snow-capped High Atlas range and is dotted with streams, waterfalls and pretty Berber villages. It is named after the river Ourika, which descends from the mountains above, providing the valley with its lush wildflower flora.

Most tourists travel to the village Setti Fatma, located deep in the valley at the end of the main road. This village is set on the green riverside terraces of the High Atlas foothills and is famous for the series of seven waterfalls that adorn the hillside above it. The waterfalls at Setti Fatma are all reachable by foot with varying degrees of effort, and the further up in the hills you get, the more breathtaking the waterfalls and the views become. To reach the last one can be quite a hike, but come prepared with proper footwear and plenty of water, because you won’t want to miss out on it.

Aside from Setti Fatma, there are plenty of other places in the Ourika Valley to explore as well. One of our favourites is the little pottery village of Tafza which is home to a fascinating museum of artefacts and information all about Berber culture. And for another taste of history, visit the ruins, tombs and mausoleums in the archaeological site of Aghmat, once one of Moroccos oldest cities dating back to pre-Islamic times when it served as the country’s capital. Agriculture in the valley is also vibrant and picturesque, and you can pass through everything from olive groves to cherry orchards on your explorations of the area.

3. The Atlas Mountains & Ouzoud Waterfalls

day trips from marrakech

The Atlas Mountains quite literally draw the line between the Sahara Desert and the coast of Morocco. There are three ranges in total and the most popular with visitors from Marrakech is the High Atlas, a mere 90 minutes away. These mountains are home to spectacular hiking trails that will take you past some of Moroccos most dramatic landscapes and scenery, as well as the gorgeous Toubkal National Park.

In the valleys and foothills of the mountains, you’re bound come across some ancient Berber villages with farms and herds of livestock. Life here goes on much as it has for the past thousand years, creating a minimal ecological footprint. Stop by one of these villages to learn more about their fascinating culture before heading on through the tranquil mountains.

Not far from the High Altas range is its sister, the Middle Atlas. This is where you’ll find the world famous Ouzoud Waterfalls (or Cascades d’Ouzoud) which are known to be the most gorgeous waterfalls in Morocco. They cascade in levels from cataracts at the top into a pool in the valley 100 metres below. Make sure to visit the falls on a sunny afternoon to see rainbows that appear in the mists. Boatmen will take visitors out into the main pool to view this natural wonder up close – close enough the feel the cool mists on your face. Surrounding the falls there are walking trails that will allow you to explore more of the verdant surroundings, and you won’t believe you’re only 90 minutes from the sandy desert climate of Marrakech.

4. Casablanca

day trips from marrakech

With all this talk of ancient villages and traditional culture, it’s easy to forget that Morocco is a modern, thriving nation. Casablanca will quickly remind you of that. This stunning city is cosmopolitan, fast-paced and full of prospering, young, creative industry. Your first impression of the town is bound to be the blend of architectural styles. Its rich history has allowed for Moorish, French-colonial and traditional Moroccan buildings to stand side by side in the vibrant downtown. Yet, huge modern developments are constantly underway, and the city is ever growing and changing.

But don’t forget to appreciate the parts of Casablanca that have truly stood the test of time, such as Hassan II Mosque, which is the oldest mosque in the country and the combined effort of a thousand talented artisans. For a more modern type of art, visit one (or five) of the many art galleries that occupy the city’s old art-deco villas. Casablanca is a hub of culture and art where you can find everything from paintings and sculpture to dance and music.

Speaking of culture, don’t forget about Casablanca’s culinary scene – our top recommendation is heading down to one of the many waterfront restaurants on La Corniche for dinner with a sea-view. This coastline is the heart of Moroccan surf-culture, and there are some excellent schools if you fancy joining the locals in giving it a go. Since Casablanca is not a tourist city, it’s not full of tourist traps. You can relax walking the French-style streets knowing that you’re getting the same authentic experience as anyone who lives there. This goes for everything from cafés and restaurants to the boutiques and galleries.

5. Ait-Ben-Haddou

day trips from marrakech

Ait-Ben-Haddou is a UNESCO World Heritage Site right on the edge of the Sahara Desert, where this city of ruins stands surrounded by olive groves and palm trees. The journey here is 3 and a half hours long from Marrakech, deep into the mountains of Ouarzazate via winding roads. Perhaps unsurprisingly, its rugged remains were used to portray the slaving city of Yunkai in the Game of Thrones television series, but that’s not why most people come to see it.

In the 17 th Century, Ait-Ben-Haddou was one of the region’s most prominent fortified villages and a major trading stop en route from Marrakech through the Sahara. It was built to last, on a hillside, with thick outer walls that were easy to defend, and fortress at the top. But the city eventually failed to withstand the dwindling of that once popular trade route, which took the city’s primary source of income when it disappeared. Since then, rough weather has taken its toll on the clay architecture leaving the town in near-ruins. By the 1940s some ninety families remained. Today, there are only five.

The old streets are narrow and full of steep staircases, and the once strong walls are now crumbling, but the old city still holds an appeal for those who can walk those labyrinths and picture the lives that were once lived there. Above all, it is a fantastic example of traditional pisé architecture and 17 th -century city planning, full of individually fortified citadels and castles. There are plans in place to authentically restore Ait-Ben-Haddou to its former charm and stature, and there is hope that the village might even be re-populated in years to come.

6. Agafay Desert

day trips from marrakech

No more than 40 kilometres south of Marrakech, along the Route d’Amizmiz, the Agafay Desert makes for an ideal day trip away from the city. It is infinitely more accessible than more famous the Sahara, and you can hop in a car or on a bus to arrive in no more than an hour. The Agafay is popular with locals and foreign visitors alike and is the ideal location for everything from horse riding and camel trekking to quad biking and plain old hiking.

What attracts, of course, is moving amongst the seemingly endless hills and desert dunes that take over this part of the region during the dry summer season. Backed by the ever-present snow-capped High Atlas, the landscape is eerily reminiscent of a lunarscape. While the desert is too dry for any development, the area’s ‘wet season’, aka spring, sees a plethora of natural life spring from the parched ground. When the wildflowers to grow, the landscape changes entirely and holds remarkable beauty for a short while.

If you’ve been itching for a bit of beach-time during your time in the dry Moroccan heat, visit the humanmade Lake Takerkoust, right at the edge of the desert, for some swimming and sunbathing along its shores. The lake has been carefully constructed to blend perfectly with the landscape and contributes to enhancing the natural beauty of the Agafay. Plus, if you forgot to bring a picnic, there are restaurants around the lake which provide a perfect for a mid-day break from exploring. Or if you prefer, there is also a sprinkling of Berber villages in the foothills of the mountains, where you can arrange to enjoy a homecooked meal.

7. Oukaïmeden

day trips from marrakech

Skiing is probably one of the last things that come to mind when you’re thinking about holidays in Morocco (unless you’re especially clued into off-the-beaten-track snow sports destinations). However, a short 45 minutes from Marrakech, and some 3000 metres up in the Atlas Mountains, is Africa’s highest ski resort – Oukaïmeden. With a handful of runs coming down from the peak of Jebel Attar, and around 20 all in all, you can easily spend a day enjoying the scenery of the Atlas Mountains from a whole new perspective.

Now, no-one expects you to bring along ski-gear to a holiday in the desert. At Oukaïmeden you can rent skis and boots for a much lower price than you’ll ever come across at a European ski-resort, and lift-passes are even cheaper still (but if lifts aren’t your thing there’s always the option of riding a friendly donkey to the top). And if someone in your party is still a beginner on the slopes, you can get some lessons as well.

Fair warning, the pistes at Oukaïmeden aren’t as well groomed as what you might be used to in the Nordics or European Alps, and it might take a bit of getting used to skiing on ‘virgin snow’. But before long it will feel like smooth sailing, and we promise it’s all good fun and completely safe. We recommend visiting in the winter months to get the best snow coverage. And when you’ve finished your snowy adventures for the day, there is even a selection of restaurant serving hearty meals to fill you up the before the journey home.

We bet your mind is already half-way to Marrakech by now, so make the rest of your holiday planning easy on yourself! The 9 Best Day Trips From Marrakech

Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou

Marrakech is surrounded by dramatic desert, towering mountains and rugged coastline that’s dotted with rushing waterfalls, idyllic Berber villages and even ski resorts. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore them.

Marrakech is a great place to visit. But when the hustle and bustle gets too much, it’s time to head out and explore the surrounding countryside. With the Atlas Mountains just an hour from Marrakech, the coast only two hours away and the edge of the desert within five hours of the city, the range of day trips is numerous. This is our pick of the best.

1. Ourika Valley

Natural Feature

Morocco, Atlas mountains, Ourika Valley

When the heat of Marrakech gets to be too much, locals tend to head to the Ourika Valley, where temperatures are cooler and lunch by the river awaits. Climb up to the Setti Fatma waterfalls to enjoy some of the cooler air (young men and boys may try to guide you, but just insist that you know the way) before finding a rock to perch on and enjoy the views and sounds of the rushing waterfalls.

Natural Feature, Ski Resort

MOROCCO-SKI-TOURISM

Located in Toubkal National Park, this is the starting point for trekkers climbing Mount Toubkal. While there is not a lot to see or do in the village itself – with the exception of some roadside cafés and tourist shops – Imlil is a great place to start a short walk up to one of the villages. If you’ve heard about the December 2018 murder of two foreign women by religious extremists here, rest assured that the Moroccan government has tightened up safety measures in this small, friendly village, which was shocked by the violence. Now all hikers are required to register in the village and contract a guide if they wish to climb Toubkal. A local guide is a good idea anyway if you want to explore the region through shorter hikes and learn more about Berber culture. When you’re finished, reward yourself with a local meal and espresso-strength green tea laden with sugar (ask for “ atay bla skar ” if you’d rather spare your teeth.)

4. Ouirgane Valley

Morocco, High Atlas, Toubkal National Park, Ourika valley

This delightful valley feels slightly off the tourist path with its gentle rolling hills dotted with olive trees and the nearby Atlas Mountains towering in the background. The pace here is slow, with Berber villages dotting the mountainside. On Saturdays, stop at the weekly market in Asni en route, where locals gather from the surrounding villages to purchase everything from fruits and vegetables to meats, household goods, clothing and more.

5. Tin Mal Mosque

Historical Landmark

Tourists at the 12th century Tin Mal mosque, High Atlas region, Morocco Africa

Another 40km (25mi) south of Ouirgane is Tin Mal Mosque. Built in 1153, it was partially restored in the 1990s and is one of only two mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslims, except on Fridays, when it is used for prayers. Set against the stunning backdrop of the valley, the mosque is an opportunity to admire the architecture of the Almohad empire, which began in these mountains and came to rule Morocco and much of Spain.

6. Essaouira

Natural Feature, Historical Landmark

Essaouira

7. Ouzoud Waterfalls

Ouzoud Waterfalls

Nestled in the High Atlas Mountains, Ouzoud Waterfalls never fails to impress. Start your walk at the top of the falls, where you can peer over the edge and view the many sources that make up these spectacular falls. Then follow the path down for views of the powerful water until you reach the basin below, where the scenery is both refreshing and breathtaking. Get even closer to the waterfalls by taking a boat trip around the pool.

8. Aït Benhaddou

Historical Landmark, Natural Feature

Sunset over Ait Benhaddou - Ancient city in Morocco North Africa

9. Agafay Desert

Morocco, Quadbikes in desert of Agafay

Known geologically speaking as a stone desert, the Agafay Desert, just 40 minutes from Marrakech, is a must-see. With nothing but stones for miles, suddenly the landscape changes to include valleys and oases, palm trees and the High Atlas Mountains in the background. A day trip here is a perfect option for those who don’t have time to head to the Sahara Desert.

A family city guide to Marrakech

Morocco with kids? The best place to start is Marrakech — an ancient yet accessible city with street entertainment, rooftop restaurants and colourful markets.

The melodic song of the call to prayer bouncing off the honeycomb-coloured medina walls; the hammering of metal and bray of a donkey in the winding souqs; the whine of a pungi flute in the Jemaa el-Fnaa square at dusk — there’s much to enchant kids in Marrakech’s ancient heart. This North African destination might not be the most likely of family city breaks, but it’s guaranteed to burrow deep into your children’s memories. The compact historic centre — with its fountains, palaces and lively markets — is easily walkable and provides endless fascination for enquiring minds.

Beyond the city, there are many excellent day trips, from gentle hikes and waterfall excursions in the High Atlas Mountains to quad biking in the Agafay desert and kid-friendly cooking classes surrounded by village farms. Many families choose to stay in hotels with pools outside central Marrakech, but there’s so much to explore in the medina (old town) itself   that those with older kids or more adventurous appetites should consider atmospheric, traditional-style riad   hotels close to the thrumming beats of the Jemaa el-Fnaa and its evening entertainment — a guaranteed crowd-pleaser for any age, at the heart of a city that deserves far more than a day’s exploration.

( A family city guide to Paris .)

Children browse in a store in Marrakech's medina with local products stacked on the surrounding shelves.

What to do in Marrakech with kids

Toddlers: The Arabian Nights fairytales have nothing on Marrakech’s medina. Glistening platters of honey-soaked pastries, rainbow displays of babouche slippers and the whir and hammer of toiling craftsmen all offer joyful distractions for tots. The best time to wander the souk is at dusk, when the sun loses its bite and local families come out to stroll and shop.

Late afternoon to early evening is also a good time to let kids explore Marrakech’s many gardens. They’ll be in good company with all the local children, who come for family picnics in the shade of palm trees. The gardens surrounding the Koutoubia Mosque are the closest to the medina, but Cyber Park a five-minute walk northwest has a more local vibe, as do the Menara Gardens a little further west. Adventurous parents could also try the public hammam   — every neighbourhood in Marrakech medina has one, and they’re usually full of mothers and children during the women’s bathing sessions.

Children under 10: To see something of the Rose City’s past, take your kids to the Badi Palace, a medieval ruined fortress perfect for energetic scrambles. Long-legged storks have built huge nests on its lofty ramparts, providing a fascinating sideshow. History-lovers may prefer the Bahia Palace, which leaves less to the imagination as it’s been partially restored to show how former sultans lived amid richly tiled courtyards and ornately carved rooms.

After around 2pm, the Jemaa el-Fnaa is closed to traffic, orange-juice stalls pack away and the medina’s main square is transformed into a huge street-food market. It’s not just a good place for dinner come dusk, but also live entertainment with magic tricks, gnaua drumming and high-pitched pungi flutes drawing locals and travellers alike.

A wealth of kid-friendly day trips can be organised from Marrakech, too. Take your little ones out for a donkey trek in the High Atlas Mountains with a stop for lunch in a traditional Amazigh village, scramble up to a waterfall with locals or book onto a country cooking class at Atelier Chef Tarik , which operates on a laidback farm. Here, children can get involved with kneading dough for fresh bread or mixing semolina for couscous — and the cooking school supports training and education for young women in the local villages.

A picture of Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech. It is painted bright tones of yellow and blue, and surrounding it is gardens of cacti

Tweens and teenagers: Marrakech has a wealth of museums, tours and activities for every interest. Active kids can whizz around on a quad bike in the arid Agafay scrub and desert just 40 minutes from the medina. Social enterprise Pikala , meanwhile, runs bicycle tours through the medina or Palmeraie (a palm oasis outside of Marrakech) that support local kids by training them as mechanics while promoting bicycle transport for local youths.

Arty teens can visit Jardin Majorelle   — the beautiful, chic gardens and house once owned by Yves Saint Laurent   — and the Musée Yves Saint Laurent fashion and design museum next door. There’s also the Moroccan Culinary Arts Museum , exploring Morocco ’s spices, the Jewish influence on Moroccan food and other aspects of the country’s unique cuisine, which will reel in budding chefs. If all else fails, teenagers may enjoy shopping for trainers and other gear in the medina souks. Try Naturom for organic local beauty products or Max & Jan for cool clothing, accessories and room decor.

Where to stay in Marrakech with kids

Toddlers: Traditional medina riads are beautiful but sound travels easily in these intimate courtyard hotels and parents of toddlers may prefer more space and privacy. Jnane Tamsna , in the Palmeraie area just north of central Marrakech, is an excellent, family-friendly alternative with two heated pools, lush palm-shaded walkways and delicious home-cooked meals. It also has a TV and games room with a DVD library for downtime. For something a little more central, look for a contemporary pool-framed hotel in the quiet, upmarket suburb of Hivernage, just outside the medina.

Children under 10: Beldi Country Club , a 15-minute taxi ride south of the Jemaa el-Fnaa, is a fashionable option with rose gardens and several pools, including two for kids, plus child-friendly activities such as pottery and cooking classes, an outdoor cinema and horse-riding. For medina atmosphere, try Riad Nesma   — a Moroccan-owned traditional hotel with four-person rooms. The big selling points are its small rooftop dip pool, friendly staff and easy-to-find location on one of the main streets 10-minutes’ walk south of the Jemaa el-Fnaa.

Tweens and teenagers: Older kids will appreciate being in the thick of the action. Try Riad L’Orangerie , which has an easy-to-find location surrounded by shops and cafes on one of the medina’s main arteries. On balmy nights, the walled pool area is strung up with a projector for movie nights. Riad Noos Noos , in the mellow Mellah — ancient Jewish quarter — is a good-value option with a couple of family suites and a pool table room; it’s just off lively Place de Ferblantiers and has a small suntrap roof terrace overlooked by nesting storks.

A traditional courtyard in a palace in Marrkech with a tiered water feature in the centre

Where to eat in Marrakech with kids

Toddlers: The casual-dining atmosphere of the Jemaa el-Fnaa makes it a laidback spot for snacking and quick bites with whirlwind small children — fried fish, kebabs and freshly squeezed orange juice are all likely to appeal. Pizza is always a good fallback — Kasbah Café Marrakech is a well-located spot serving giant pizza wheels on its straw-umbrella-shaded rooftop, close to the Saadian Tombs and Badi Palace.

Children under 10: Whisk kids up to the waterfall terrace seating at Zeitoun Café overlooking the Jemaa el-Fnaa; there’s a kid’s set menu including ice-cream, plus crowd-pleasing seasonal juices, kefta meatball sandwiches and omelettes, which kids can munch on while checking out the street hawkers and snake charmers below. Café Clock , in the southern Kasbah area of the medina, is a cultural space and cafe with a warren of art-splashed rooms and terraces and gnaua music nights, storytelling and cinema events — adventurous kids might like to try the camel burger with a date milkshake.

Tweens and teenagers: The Marrakech Henna Art Cafe , south of the Jemaa el-Fnaa, is a popular lunch stop for families; let your kids choose a natural plant-based henna design and then stay for juices, vegan wraps and salads as local women paint henna designs onto hands and feet. For dinner, ascend the stairs to the terraces at Nomad , just north of the medina. Its cool soundtrack, fairy-lights and woollen Moroccan capes for chilly nights are a good accompaniment to the inventive Moroccan menu featuring dishes such as fried Agadir calamari and spiced beef-and-lamb burgers with smoked aubergine.

Seasonality is an important factor in deciding when to book a trip to Marrakech. Temperatures in July and August average 37C, so it’s not advisable to travel then. The best months to visit are in spring and autumn, around April and May or October — this is also when hotel prices are highest (along with the New Year period). Temperatures usually hover around the late teens to early 20Cs into winter months, though in December and January it can get chilly at night.
