Tornado (sailboat)
The Tornado is a double handed multihull class recognised as an International Class by the International Sailing Federation. It was used for the Catamaran discipline at the Olympic Games from 1976 to 2008. Design. One hull flying. The boat was designed in 1967 by Rodney March from the Isle of Sheppey, England.
Tornado to performance trimaran conversion
So, tornado trimaran conversion is still in idea stage, simply amount of man hours needed is not available at the moment. Although we are planing to do a slight face lift to our tornado catamaran this winter, as it involves, sanding old paint down and a lot of fairing and painting afterwards, I started to wonder about extending the standard tornado bows, so it would be more similar to modern ...
Trinado
The original concept was for a small trimaran which would use Tornado hulls as its floats. The Tornado floats ended up being a little shorter on righting moment than ideal, and Donald had Nigel Irens design a new set of floats which Russell built. It is an ideal daysailor for 1-3 persons and a great camp cruiser for 2.
Tornado hull modifications
Basic idea was to convert Tornado catamaran into trimaran. Although idea is still very interesting, but various commitments does not allow to spend as much time on this project as I wanted and as it is needed. At the moment we are planing to do a slight face lift to our tornado catamaran this winter, as it involves, sanding old paint down and a ...

Now you can glue some pieces of styrofoam (polystyrene insualtion foam 30 - 40 kg/m³) onto the patterns and the hull. Use PU lightly foaming construction glue. Now you can shape the new bow. Laminate the glas fabric (a total glass wheight of 600 gr/m² should be enough, lminate at least one of the layers at 45° direction.

Construction Methods
The most famous use of tortured ply is probably its original use to construct hulls for the lightweight 'Tornado' catamaran. In 1979, using 4.5mm ply for the hulls, she outperformed all the other B-class competition, to then be selected as a new Olympic Class - still raced today. Although the method is still used by some today, the actual ...
tornado/nacra trimaran
What I like about tri's beyond their inherent stability is the fact that they point higher than most cats do. I built my trimaran "Skyhook V" with my partner Ken King, formerly of Navtec and launched 1994. 39'10"LOL and 28'4" on the beam. Built of western red cedar with e-glass skins and carbon fiber at the main stress points.

Cross Beam thoughts for small Tri
Like a few others, I am building a recreational use trimaran. I have a Tornado 20 center hull and two Nacra 5.5 for amas. Mast will be Tornado standard setup w 30ft mast. I ran across a pile of 4 inch aluminum tubing. It appears to have wall thickness of 2mm. Planning for beam of 14ft and will leave these pieces whole without any hinging mechanism.

Tornado catamaran hull shape. 11-15-2014, 08:20 PM. I'm getting interested in compounded (tortured) plywood hulls for a trimaran that I would like to build. Trimaran From a Tornado Cat
The ideal would be to have a 20/1 or so L/B(like the Tornado hull) with wetted surface no greater than the Tornado hull used as the main hull on your boat. You can see that if the wetted surface increases and/or the L/B ratio decreases as the ama takes the load you are increasing drag.

Trimaran From a Tornado Cat
That should be a reduced surface area from the cat (even assuming 400# + crew instead of 320# + crew). If it were equal surface area, I would be very happy. The Hughes 23 amas would probably be much more that I need, since I want 20' vaka length, and the boat should have a lighter total weight. He does have a 20' tri.

Reg White (Sailcraft - first builders of Tornados) Offered these in the late 1960s'. They were made so you could switch back and forth between your Tornado, and then the floats for this trimaran. They sold just the rig and main hull, or complete with the Tornado floats. No idea how many were built or how successful they were.
