The multihull pairs the same high-volume, tri-deck styling as the StellarCAT AL2503 platform but with an upgraded power option to satisfy the owner’s desire to get to offshore fishing grounds faster—and a reasonable amount of efficiency.

The twin Volvo IPS drives deliver a top speed of about 21 knots. Because the IPS system claims 35-percent more efficiency than traditional shafts, and catamarans are more efficient than monohulls, this super cat is designed to make better use of its 5,200 gallons of fuel capacity. A potential foiling solution could increase the boat’s top speed to 35 knots, though the company declined to specify any technical details.

Cool key features that have been disclosed include a mega-tuna tower—among the largest in terms of height-to-boat length ratio—and near water-level extended cockpits on each hull with fighting chairs. These pods are where the fishing action happens, and as such, have reinforced soles and opening hydraulic transom doors for when a catch needs to be boated.

One of the owner’s top mandates was stability in the ocean. The double-hulled catamaran design makes sense since it won’t heel like a monohull and is less prone to rock and roll at anchor. The wide beam also delivers exceptional interior space that is often a third larger than a monohull of the same length.

“His list also included fuel efficiency,” adds Holmes. That would help the 85-footer achieve a range of 2,400 miles nautical miles, so it can venture to fishing grounds as far from the U.S. mainland as Belize and Nova Scotia. The lightweight all-metal construction and flat surface planing hulls also add to the efficiency.”

“The owner has owned fiberglass boats before,” says Holmes, “but sees significant advantages with all-aluminum construction, mainly from a collision and fire-safety perspective, but also low maintenance, eco credentials, rigidity, shock absorption, and comfort under way.”

A longstanding desire among big-game fisherman to travel to fishing grounds 100-plus nautical miles offshore or deep into the Pacific has driven up the length and range of sportfishing vessels. Probably the most extreme example is Royal Huisman’s six-deck, 171-foot Project 406 , which is billed as the world’s largest sportfishing superyacht.

But it’s not more than size. The owners are tasking builders with levels of superyacht fit and finish that provides comfort after a day of fishing. The new Viking 90 is a good example of that.

SF2603 will be designed to meet Lloyd’s +100A1 SSC Yacht Mono G6 classification, with delivery scheduled for the summer of 2025.

Main Machinery

The main propulsion plant consists of two (2) approx. 1770 kW (each) diesel engines (Caterpillar or equivalent), each coupled to a Fixed Pitch Propeller (FPP) through reduction gearbox and shaft line. Each main propulsion diesel engine is foreseen with single elastic mounting and elastic coupling to gearbox. Gearboxes will be hard elastic mount. Maximum speed is 17 knots.

The exhaust gases of the propulsion engines will be led underwater to the side shell, and bypass for low operations will be led to the side shell above the waterline. The exhaust gases of the diesel generators will be dry type, fitted with sea water injection, and running through the hull sides above the waterline. Dry silencers and urea-based Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) systems will be fitted on all exhaust lines to fulfill the IMO TIER Ill Rules Requirements on NOX emissions, Soot filters are foreseen on the Diesel generators exhaust lines.

Automatic watertight sliding doors to divide the ship in case of hull damage with appropriate means of escape in case of emergency. An alarm and monitoring system is provided.

Helicopter Pad

A non-certified helicopter landing place on bridge deck forward, suitable to support a helicopter of type EC130 or equal.

Tender and Toys

Enclosed aft ship tender store with bottom-hinged side doors suitable for:

• (2) 9.0-meter tenders

XPM-85: a 52 t, Explorer Yacht Machine - The Hull

Sometimes in life, it becomes evident that others have more nerve than me! I felt this when standing on the swim platform of Vanguard , looking wistfully at the recently turned hull of an XPM-85 under construction in the yard of Naval Yachts, Antalya. The hull is massive, extended deeper, and broader than Vangaurd. 66% bigger by block coefficient, 29% by displacement. My lovely wife, Sebrina, began asking awkward questions, starting with "W hy can't .... .". I answered, " someone will need to hire a crew ". Silence fell upon a scene of strained marital bliss.

Picture shows hull of XPM-85 prior to being skinned, scantlings are well in excess of Code requirements. The figure for scale is my friend Don Gregory, Extra First Class Engineer.

Hull Statistics

For those who know of the FPB 78, Iron Lady, Cochise or Grey Wolf II, the XPM 85 fills a similar space with comparable hull statistics, propulsion power, and internal arrangements. Look HERE for a similar comparison of the FPB70 and XPM78. Hydrodynamics being what they are, I'd anticipate a similar in-class performance. Hull No 1 is under construction, over twelve months into her 20-month build. Hull No 2 has gone to contract, and we hope to see the signature soon. The race is on.

The Hull of XPM-85 reminds me a little of an experience I once had at Hyundai Shipyard, Ulsan, Korea, in the 1980s. I was standing on the key looking at four gas carriers under construction in their drydock. One was minus the stern section, so I casually asked where it was. The answer: wait for it, wait - "you are standing underneath it"! Quite a surprise I had at that moment.

Oceanco Launch Superyacht Project Y708

The 85.5m superyacht project Y708 is one of the most closely guarded new construction vessels currently in production; however, reports are now emerging that the Y708 has been launched after being spotted on the waterways of Rotterdam by the yachting press.

After launching the 87m Nirvana (a.k.a. Y707) earlier this year, Oceanco have today introduced their second superyacht to water in the shape of the ultra-modern Y708 model.

Designed by Azure Naval Architects, the Y708 holds all of the stunning characteristics of an Oceanco yacht and the impressive position of 54th in the  Top 100 Largest Yachts  rankings. 

When the design was first introduced to the public, we were told that Y708 holds a steel hull and aluminium superstructure with a beam of 14.20m (46'7"ft) and a 4m (13'1"ft) draft. Built to comply to MCA standards,

Y708 is also capable of achieving a top speed of 24 knots flat out with a cruising speed of 20 knots from her 280,000-litre fuel tanks.

We’re sure more details and images surrounding the Y708 will emerge in due time, however, like most closely guarded secrets, Oceanco were unable to release any information at this current time.

The 5th edition of the International exhibition of yachts and boats –  Moscow Boat Show , held from March 20 to 25, 2012 will be hosted by the first pavilion of Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre. This popular show is dedicated not only to the specialists of the market segment and professional sportsmen but also to those who consider sailing sport to be their hobby and well cherished dream.

The project is the result of joint efforts of the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre and the National Marine Industry Association. The event is supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine. Moscow Boat Show is the largest project in Russia presenting all the best in the world of yachting.

The exhibition annually shows high level of attendance and has already proved as significant and noteworthy event in the world of yachts and boats. Every year new exhibitors join the list of participants, genuine “sharks” of yachting business, the quantity of visitors considerably increases and the exposition becomes more sated and diverse.

The best companies professionally involved into yachting and small navigation business – 180 exhibitors from 17 regions of the Russian Federation and 15 countries traditionally presented the best and the newest in the world of yachting at 2011 edition: from design and facilitation of vessels and up to cruising and training courses for beginning skippers. In 2011 the overall exhibit space comprised 18 000 sq m. More than 25 000 visitors came to the show.

This year the exposition space will increase up to 30 000 sq m and will be accommodated in 4 exhibition halls. The scale of the project confirms confident positions of its positive development. The organizers will try to arrange a genuine fiesta of water on land!

Quite a number of foreign exhibitors will participate in the show. Foreign companies show increasing interest to yachting business in Russia.

Moscow Travel meeting - 20 August, 2016

At last...it's that time again! The Towns & Villages near Moscow (Idaho) group will be meeting as usual on the third Saturday of the month, the 20 August at 10:30 in the back room of One World Café, 533 South Main Street in Moscow.

If you like to talk about travel, have questions about travel or about planning a trip or have tips to suggest, we'd love to have you join us! We usually meet till 1:00 although some people have to leave early to check out the open market.

We'll have a map and several Rick Steves guidebooks on the table. Hope to see you there!

Yep, I'll be there. Oh no!! Wait!! I WON'T be there! I'll be in Paris getting over jet lag so I can have a fabulous time on the GAS tour!

Well, Andrea, I have to ~try~ to keep up with Darcy. However, I cannot match the fact that she met YOU in Venice...unless you will be in Paris next week and I can take you to lunch/drink/dinner/breakfast/coffee??

Pam, Andrea and I not only met up in Venice, we also met up for dinner in Siena! Fabulous dinner and superb dessert! Andrea, what was the dessert called? Pam, I guess you'll just have to travel with me continuously so you can meet up with Andrea more often!

Keeping up with Darcy is difficult. Pam, I'll be in Paris is November if you can come back and meet up with me.

Darcy, the dessert in Siena was called Bacio di Siena. It's a chocolate shelled, cream filled, cool treat. A Sienese delicacy. In case you think I remembered all that, I did! Actually I looked it up in my blog. Did I tell you that Marie and I went back there for dinner our last night in Siena? Of course I had to have that dessert again.

Darcy, Andrea and Jim and I are meeting up in Paris in November. We only over-lap by one day ... but it will be a great one! Have a fun meeting in Moscow!

SharYn, I really hoped to have Jim and Andrea change their birthdays so they could meet up with our daughter Kathy and me in Paris in early October but they were reluctant, said it was too much paperwork. So happy to hear that your trips over-lap because getting to meet up with friends is like an extra treat! (I also tried to get Pam to change her plans but to no avail but hopefully we'll be meeting up in April.) Have a great Sacramento meeting....Moscow plans to do the same!

Darcy...we ~could~ go to Paris in November. You could just tell Doug you have a meeting in Boise.

A better idea might be for me to just stay in Paris for all of October and return the same time Jim and Andrea do. Just think of all the money I'd be saving, not having to buy another plane ticket to Europe! (Yaaaaa, we won't talk about how much I'd be spending, staying in Europe from the first week in October till Thanksgiving--heehee! He'd probably notice I was missing!)

So Pam, I'm already packed and ready to fly with you to Paris but I wasn't able to get the seat next to you. I suppose it would help if I bought a ticket?

To the top! So far there will be 8 of us and there are many I haven't heard from this time. I expect many more since we won't have Pam to scold us for dancing on the table!

Did I mention that there will be a world map on the table as well as several Rick maps, various Rick guidebooks, phrase books and I might even bring a show and tell item.
