Divers find 5 bodies during search of yacht wreckage off Sicily

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers searching the wreck of a superyacht that sank off Sicily found the bodies of five passengers Wednesday and searched for one more as questions intensified about why the vessel sank so quickly when a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

Rescue crews unloaded three body bags from rescue vessels that pulled into port at Porticello. Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, said two other bodies had also been found in the wreckage for a total of five.

The discovery made clear the operation to search the hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater had quickly turned into a recovery one, not a rescue, given the amount of time that had passed and that no signs of life had emerged over three days of searching, maritime experts said.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (a half-mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Fifteen people escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby sailboat. One body was recovered Monday — that of the ship’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, of Antigua.

Thomas was born in Canada, according to his cousin David Isaac, but would visit his parents’ homeland of Antigua as a child, moving permanently to the tiny eastern Caribbean island in his early 20s. Italian officials previously listed Antigua as the nationality of someone on board.

The fate of six missing passengers had driven the search effort, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch , his 18-year-old daughter and associates who had successfully defended him in a recent U.S. federal fraud trial.

Lynch’s spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

What caused the ship to sink so quickly?

Meanwhile, investigators from the Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office were acquiring evidence for their criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy even though no formal suspects have been publicly identified.

Questions abound about what caused the superyacht, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, to sink so quickly, when the nearby Sir Robert Baden Powell sailboat was largely spared and managed to rescue the survivors.

Was it merely the case of a freak waterspout that knocked the ship to its side and allowed water to pour in through open hatches? What was the position of the keel, which on a large sailboat such as the Bayesian might have been retractable, to allow it to enter shallower ports?

“There’s a lot of uncertainty as to whether it had a lifting keel and whether it might have been up,” said Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a fellow of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and the editor of the Journal of Sailing Technology. “But if it had, then that would reduce the amount of stability that the vessel had, and therefore made it easier for it to roll over on its side,” he said in an interview.

The captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell sailboat, which came to the Bayesian’s rescue, said his craft had sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, which is the highest, hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the storm, which was forecast, rolled in.

“Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Karsten Bornersaid in a text message. But he said that might not have been a viable option for the Bayesian, given its trademark 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

“If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight, sub-compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

“So for the vessel to sink, especially this fast, you are really looking at taking water on board very quickly, but also in a number of locations along the length of the vessel, which again indicates that it might have been rolled over on its side,” Souppez said.

Italian coast guard and fire rescue divers continued the underwater search in dangerous and time-consuming conditions. Because of the wreck’s depth, which requires special precautions, divers working in tag teams could only spend about 12 minutes at a time searching.

The limited dive time is designed in part to avoid decompression sickness, also known as the “bends,” which can occur when divers stay underwater for long periods and ascend too quickly, allowing nitrogen gas dissolved in the blood to form bubbles.

“The longer you stay, the slower your ascent has to be,” said Simon Rogerson, the editor of SCUBA magazine. He said the tight turnaround time suggests the operation's managers are trying to limit the risks and recovery time after each dive.

“It sounds like they’re operating essentially on no decompression or very tight decompression, or they’re being extremely conservative,” he said.

Additionally, the divers were working in extremely tight spaces, with debris floating around them, limited visibility and oxygen tanks on their backs.

“We are trying to advance in tight spaces, but any single thing slows us down,” said Luca Cari, spokesman for the fire rescue service. “An electric panel could set us back for five hours. These aren’t normal conditions. We’re at the limit of possibility.”

“It’s not a question of entering the cabin to inspect it,” he added. “They’ve arrived at the level of the cabins, but it’s not like you can open the door,” he said.

The Italian coast guard said they had reinforced their dive teams and were using underwater remote-controlled robots, which can stay out for six or seven hours at a time and record the surroundings.

The lack of any signs of life and the recovery of bodies led outside experts to conclude that the search was now a recovery effort and investigation to determine how the tragedy had unfolded.

“I think the fact that there’s been quite a lot of diving presence around the vessel and that they haven’t been able to pick up any signs of life inside the vessel, is, is unfortunately, not a particularly good sign,” said Souppez.

Italian Authorities Currently Don’t Have Anyone ‘Under Investigation’ over Luxury Yacht Sinking

Six people remain missing following the sinking of the 'Bayesian,' which capsized on Monday, Aug. 19 while moored about a half mile from the coast of Porticello, Sicily

The Italian authorities currently don't have anyone under investigation as the search continues for the six people who remain missing after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily.

Superyacht Bayesian capsized early on Monday, Aug. 19, while moored about a half mile from the coast of Porticello, according to a statement from the Italian Coast Guard, previously obtained by PEOPLE.

A source close to the investigators dealing with the incident tells PEOPLE that the "priority" is to search for and locate the missing people before the authorities look into what happened amid the tragedy.

"Obviously the priority is being able to work out what has happened to those that are missing and recover any bodies. At the moment, no one has been placed under investigation because until they find the bodies, they cannot evaluate any sort of accusation or charge," the source tells PEOPLE.

"But one thing that is striking is that nine out of 10 survivors are crew members. So once this phase is complete, there will be an attempt made to determine whether there were any incorrect maneuvers or negligence on the part of those managing the yacht, in order to determine whether there were any responsibilities in terms of what happened," the source added.

According to Reuters , prosecutors in the nearby town of Termini Imerese have opened an investigation into the tragedy. Per the Associated Press , prosecutors have yet to comment publicly on the matter.

A rescue operations source also told PEOPLE "it's unlikely anyone will be found during the course of today [Aug. 21]," due to the vessel being "designed differently from traditional ones in that the main cabins are at the stern." 

"There's very much hope for a miracle; everyone expects them to be trapped inside, but the hope is for there to be some form of air pocket," the source added.

The missing passengers include British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, along with New York City-based lawyer Christopher Morvillo — who helped Lynch get acquitted in his recent fraud case — and his wife Neda.

A source close to the survivors previously told PEOPLE the group had traveled to the Aeolian Islands to celebrate the win. 

Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife are also missing. Lynch's wife Angela Bacares was one of the 15 passengers rescued, along with Charlotte Golunski , who has since spoke of saving her 1-year-old daughter Sophie.

"I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning,” Golunski told Italian newspaper  la Repubblica , according to a translation.

According to Italian media outlets, per  Reuters , a man's body was found after the sinking and later identified as the yacht’s chef.

Those who remain missing are presumed dead by many of the investigators, local sources previously told PEOPLE, though authorities are yet to comment on that.

Superyacht sinks latest: Fifth body found in search today - six people now confirmed dead

Those involved in the search and rescue operation looking for bodies should receive mental health support, an expert has told Sky News.

Divers have been working tirelessly since Monday morning to find the passengers unaccounted for following the sinking of the Bayesian.

Since then, six bodies have been found, with one person still missing.

"There's been a lot of focus on the physical risks involved with diving for the vessel," says Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council.

"We've talked about debris and we've talked about the complex layout, but the lasting impacts on everybody involved is going to be on the mental health and we hope that the support is going to be there. 

"And I'm sure it will be for the emergency responders and also for the people who have survived and what is obviously been a very, very traumatic experience."

Searches have finished for the day and will resume tomorrow, the head of Sicily's civil protection agency has told the PA news agency.

Salvatore Cocina confirmed earlier that five bodies have been found today, but only four recovered.

One person remains missing.

A shipbuilding expert has said the Bayesian superyacht which sunk on Monday is among the "safest" available.

Giovanni Costantino is the chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, which now owns the firm that previously built the yacht.

He told Sky News this week's disaster off the coast of Sicily has put him "in a state of sadness on the one hand and of disbelief on the other".

He said: "Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats] I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built."

"The sailing ships, it is well known, are the safest in the most absolute sense," Mr Constantino added.

"First of all, because they have very little surface compared to a yacht facing the wind. Second, with the structure, the drift keel... they become unsinkable bodies."

The Bayesian sunk in the early hours of Monday morning off Palermo following a violent storm.

Investigators looking into the sinking of the Bayesian must work through evidence "methodically and meticulously", says the managing director of a maritime consulting group.

The UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has already confirmed it is investigating the incident. 

James Wilkes, a maritime investigator, told Sky News the investigation into the deaths of passengers will take time.

"The key thing for the investigators is to work methodically and meticulously through the evidence that they are able to get and make sure they're not missing something or not over interpreting something," he said.

Five bodies have been found today, bringing the number of confirmed deaths to six.

"They'll want to expedite it because if bodies are being recovered of British nationals, then it is very likely that an inquest will be opened into their deaths in the UK," added Mr Wilkes.

"There is no benefit to anybody rushing it. We need to arrive at the right conclusions with as little supposition and ambiguity as possible so that we actually make yachts safer in the future and actually understand what happened in detail."

Search and rescue teams have been working hard since Monday morning to find those unaccounted after the sinking of the Bayesian.

Specialists divers and experts have been called in, with coastguard helicopters and underwater remotely operated vehicles deployed to help.

A fifth body has been found today in the search for survivors of the sunken superyacht

The head of Sicily's civil protection agency Salvatore Cocina said four bodies have been recovered and that efforts to bring a fifth to shore are "ongoing". 

It brings the number of confirmed deaths to six, after the body of the yacht's on-board chef was recovered shortly after the incident on Monday.

The crowd on the harbourside has been growing since lunchtime. 

News that cave divers from Naples and Rome had joined the search came with more attention and interest. 

The search had entered its third day, and conservations were turning to fear about a lack of oxygen for those on board the sunken yacht. 

Radios were heard crackling across the water where a makeshift temporary search and rescue "centre" has been constructed. 

The white coastguard vessel and the search and rescue cream and red boat were coming in from the search site. 

As they docked, two divers dressed in orange wetsuits on the back of the boat lifted the first body bag.

The sight causing the crowd opposite to fall silent. The poignancy of the sombre moment bringing some watching on to tears.

Some looked away, whilst others filmed on their phones. 

The moment many had feared was unfolding before their eyes as the rescue mission only minutes ago quickly turned to recovery. 

The crowd watched on as another body was brought ashore too. 

A spontaneous guard of honour seemed to form as each body was brought to the harbourside - police officers, firefighters and search and rescue officials side by side, some with bowed heads - a moment of silence and respect. 

After hours of searching, this operation is coming to a close.

The former commander of the UK's amphibious taskforce has disagreed with the view of some experts that the superyacht was the victim of a "black swan event".

The term is used to refer to a high-impact, rare incident that is difficult to predict, but is often seen in retrospect as having been inevitable.

It's thought the Bayesian sunk after it was struck by a tornado over the water - known as a waterspout - which caused it to capsize.

"I think it's quite interesting that a lot of people are saying this is a black swan event," Rear Admiral Chris Parry told Sky News.

"It isn't really. You get about 500 of these sorts of events in the Mediterranean every year," he added, referring to the waterspouts.

"I've been studying the Mediterranean for the best part of 50 years, and they're quite commonplace, and they're associated with certain, atmospheric, conditions."

Rear Adm Parry added: "They normally happen in around September and October in increasing in numbers, but because of warming sea levels, they're happening more and more in August now. 

"Although this is a very unlucky event, in fact, they are predictable at certain times of the year."

Emergency service staff and others involved in search and rescue operations have formed a "guard of honour" as bodies are brought ashore, says our correspondent Ashna Hurynag .

Four bodies, which have not yet been identified, were found in the wreck of the Bayesian this afternoon.

It's unclear how many have been recovered, but those that have been brought to shore have been loaded onto an ambulance and driven away from the port.

"As each body has been brought ashore - two that we have seen so far with our own eyes -  we are seeing almost a guard of honour forming," says Hurynag.

"Those emergency services and personnel are lining the port where they have been conducting their thorough work and bringing the body that's being recovered, loading that body onto a local ambulance, and we're seeing the ambulances being taken in convoy away from the scene."

Images have emerged of another body bag being brought to shore at the port in Porticello, Sicily.

Four bodies, which have not yet been identified, were found in the wreck of the yacht this afternoon. It's unclear how many have been recovered so far.

It means there are still two people unaccounted for from the 22 that were onboard at the time the ship sank.

British billionaire mike lynch is among the 6 missing people after a british superyacht sank in italian waters.

British billionaire Mike Lynch is among the six missing passengers of the Bayesian, Lynch’s 184-foot superyacht, which sank off the coast of Sicily, Italy on Monday, according to multiple media reports.

Lynch has been known in UK media as the “British Bill Gates” for his influence in the technology world, as well as for his wealth.

The ship sank during a violent storm after a gust of wind that nearby ship captain Karsten Borner described as a “strong hurricane gust,” according to CNBC .

After getting his own ship under control and firing a flare for help, Borner said he approached the ship and collected 15 survivors. Four of them were injured, with three being “heavily injured,” according to Borner.

He added that he had been careful not to let his boat contact the yacht during the storm, but after the gust of wind concluded, the yacht was gone.

Italian officials are still searching for the missing people. One crew member, a chef, is confirmed dead, according to Reuters .

Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, is among the survivors, but Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, is among those missing. Also among the missing are Chris Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance, Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and Bloomer’s wife, Judy, per Reuters.

The missing people include Americans, Canadians and Brits, according to NBC News .

Lynch’s co-defendant dies in separate incident

In June, Lynch was acquitted of fraud charges stemming from claims he made about his tech company, Autonomy, in the midst of selling it to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion. Stephen Chamberlain, Autonomy’s former vice president of finance, was a co-defendant in the case and was also acquitted, The Guardian reported.

HP alleged that the men had sought to inflate the company’s value before selling it.

The Guardian reported that Chamberlain died over the weekend while out for a run in the British village of Stretham, highlighting the eerie coincidence of both men being involved in accidents at nearly the same time.

After leaving Autonomy, Chamberlain worked for Darktrace, a cybersecurity firm, in addition to volunteering as a finance director for Cambridge United, a team in the English Football League’s third level of professional soccer, according to The Guardian.

“He was a courageous man with unparalleled integrity, and we deeply miss him,” said Gary Lincenberg, Chamberlain’s lawyer, of his client. “He fought successfully to clear his good name, which lives on through his wonderful family.”

Five bodies have now been found inside the sunken Bayesian superyacht as the desperate search for the final missing passenger continues .

The boat sank in a severe storm in the early hours of Monday , with those missing including British billionaire Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer ; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

The corpses of four people, one of whom belonged to a “heavily-built man”, were recovered earlier on Wednesday. The head of Sicily’s civil protection agency Salvatore Cocina said that efforts to bring a fifth to shore were “ongoing”.

Fire crews have described the operation as “complex”, with divers limited to 12-minute underwater shifts, and debris hampering efforts to access the cabins.

Divers from the Sicilian fire services were able to reach the common areas of the vessel, Giornale Di Sicilia reported yesterday, but had struggled to access the narrow spaces to the guest bedrooms.

One man, the boat’s chef Recaldo Thomas, was confirmed dead on Monday, while a further 15 people survived the disaster.

With the Bayesian lying on her side 50 metres underneath the now gentle waters of the Mediterranean, mystery still surrounds how the 56-metre superyacht, sank in the typhoon off the port of Porticello.

Remotely controlled underwater vehicles and cave divers are looking to raise the yacht , which experts will examine in the coming days. For now, the focus is on finding the people missing since the yacht went down in the early hours of Monday 19 August.

It will take weeks for Ambrogio Cartosio, the chief prosecutor of Termini Imerese, and his team to establish whether the sinking of the Bayesian was down to human error, an unpredictable weather event or whether anyone is liable.

The coastguard has been questioning survivors, including the captain of the Bayesian, and passengers on the yacht that was moored next to it who witnessed the ship going down, judicial sources said.

No one is under investigation at the moment, sources added.

Besides the diving team, the coastguard has deployed a remotely operated vehicle to scan the seabed and take underwater pictures and videos that it said may provide “useful and timely elements” for prosecutors looking into the disaster.

Experts have been at a loss to explain how a large luxury vessel, presumed to have top-class fittings and safety features, could have sunk within minutes, as recounted by witnesses. The yacht anchored next to it was unharmed by the storm.

Tributes have been paid to a chef whose body was recovered after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily , as rescuers fear six people are still trapped inside the wreck.

Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, who was working on the Bayesian superyacht, was found by the Italian coastguard near the sunken boat.

A friend of Mr Thomas, who asked to remain anonymous, said the yachting community has been saddened by his death.

Four bodies retrieved from sunken yacht in Sicily

PORTICELLO, ITALY -- Four bodies were found on Wednesday aboard the sunken wreck of a yacht belonging to the wife of British tech magnate Mike Lynch, sources close to the rescue operation said.

The identities of the victims were not immediately given by the authorities. Three of the bodies were brought ashore and taken to nearby hospitals for formal identification. The fourth corpse was being taken to land as evening set in.

Britain's Daily Telegraph reported that two of the dead were Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Local authorities in Sicily declined to comment on the report.

The British-flagged Bayesian, a 56-meter-long (184-ft) superyacht was carrying 22 people and anchored off the port of Porticello when it was hit by a fierce, pre-dawn storm on Monday.

Lynch, 59, was one of the UK's best-known tech entrepreneurs and had invited friends to join him on the yacht to celebrate his recent acquittal in a U.S. fraud trial.

Besides Lynch and his daughter, the other people unaccounted for after the disaster were Judy and Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo.

Specialist rescuers have been searching inside the hull of the sunken yacht for the past two days. The victims were believed to have been trapped in cabins, which have proved extremely hard to get to, with divers only able to stay in the vessel for 8-10 minutes before having to re-surface.

Fifteen people managed to escape the yacht before it capsized in the pre-dawn tempest, while the body of the onboard chef, Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, was found near the wreck hours after the disaster.

The Bayesian is lying on its side at a depth of around 50 meters, apparently largely intact.

Besides the diving team, the coast guard has deployed a remotely operated vehicle to scan the seabed and take underwater pictures and videos that it said may provide "useful and timely elements" for prosecutors looking into the disaster.

The coast guard has been questioning survivors, including the captain of the Bayesian, and passengers on the yacht that was moored next to it who witnessed the ship going down, judicial sources said.

No one is under investigation at the moment, sources added.

The Bayesian, which was owned by Lynch's wife, was built by Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008 and last refitted in 2020. It had the world's tallest aluminum mast, measuring 72 meters, according to its makers.

Lynch has been referred to as Britain's Bill Gates. He built the UK's largest software firm, Autonomy, which was sold to HP for $11 billion in 2011, after which the deal spectacularly unraveled with the U.S. tech giant accusing him of fraud, resulting in a lengthy trial.

He was acquitted on all charges by a jury in San Francisco in June. Morvillo had represented him at the trial, while Bloomer was a character witness on his behalf.

Bayesian's captain James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealander who survived the shipwreck, was a "very good sailor" and "very well respected" in the Mediterranean, his brother Mark told The New Zealand Herald.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, a UK-based non-profit organization that trains sea rescuers, said the Bayesian was the victim of a "high impact" weather-related incident.

"If it was a water spout, which it appears to be, it's what I would class as like a black swan event," he told Reuters, meaning a rare and unpredictable phenomenon.
