Columbia 30

columbia 30 sailboat

Not only is the Columbia Yachts logo back in business; Vince Valdes, the son of Columbia’s founder, now heads the company, and his new boat is faster and more fun to sail than its predecessors.

This boat is anything but your father’s classic Columbia 34. Introduced at the 2004 U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, the trailerable Columbia 30 is a no-nonsense sportboat that can serve as a club racer or a performance cruiser that trades amenities for sailing thrills. The berths are comfortable, and there’s a head, a small dinette table, and a rudimentary galley, but under sail is where this boat shines.

Initially, I was a little disappointed when I put the boat on a close reach in 10 to 15 knots true. We only managed to stay even with a particular 37-foot cruiser not known for alacrity. We luffed up, and two Chesapeake Bay crab-pot buoys surfaced. Free of this handicap, the Columbia 30 vaulted by the cruiser and picked off large cruising multihulls on a reach. The tiller had a fingertip feel, and foot chocks provided a comfortable position when heeling. It was clear this boat would appeal to a performance-oriented cruiser looking for an agile sloop that excels in the light summer conditions found in many of North America’s popular sailing venues.

Designer Tim Kernan leveraged such go-fast attributes as a carbon spar, a retractable keel with 2:1 purchase, and a retractable carbon-fiber bowsprit. There’s a 1,400-pound lead bulb at the tip of the keel foil and a hoisting mechanism that reduces the 7-foot draft of a weatherly performer to the 2-foot draft of a trailer-sailer.

For the hull, Columbia uses bias-biaxial fiberglass that’s vacuum bagged to a PVC foam core and infused with vinylester resin. The deck is built from balsa-core sandwich and reinforced with a carbon-fiber space frame that helps to spread rig and keel loads.

In many ways, the boat behaves like a blend between a sportboat and a pocket cruiser. Its light displacement, substantial sail area, and easily driven hull shape actually simplify sailing. The Columbia 30 has a simple sail plan, with a dominant main and a small jib on a roller-furling headstay. The retractable bowsprit allows a shorthanded crew to cope with an asymmetric spinnaker and will coax a fun sail out of 5 knots of breeze.

Down below, simplicity reigns with two comfortable quarter berths, a forward V-berth, an enclosed head, and a small galley space with a sink and a one-burner stove–perhaps all you need if your preference is marina-based daysailing and dining out.

The standard auxiliary is a 9.1-horsepower Yanmar 1GM10C with saildrive that produces adequate thrust in a calm. An optional 18-horsepower two-cylinder Yanmar diesel is available. The Columbia 30’s streamlined styling alludes to the bubble top and bullet window that typified earlier Columbias.

This boat is all about blistering performance and simple, practical accommodations. If you really like to sail fast, and your cruising isn’t about all the comforts of home, it’s worth going for a ride aboard the new Columbia 30.

Circumnavigator Ralph Naranjo has written extensively about boat design and performance.

1973 Columbia 30

I'm interested in a 1973 columbia 30' sailboat, and was wondering if anyone out there has any experiance with them or can give me any advice. Thanks.

columbia 30 sailboat

Sailed on one that had, at some point, been to Mexico and back to the PNW. Found it to be a solid feeling boat, no rocketship but seemed comfortable in a reasonable breeze. Good headroom and reasonable accommodation though as I recall the galley was a bit minimal (at least on that one) They probably go for a relatively low price for that size of boat. And, of course, Survey, survey, survey......

columbia 30 sailboat

Sailed on one for 17 years as owner. Single-handed her from S.F. Ca to Cabo, and over to P.V. Mexico with a friend, and back to Cabo. I just about wore out S.F. Bay herself with all the miles I sailed her there. I lived on the boat alone for nearly a decade. Was roomy for 2 when love was in the air. Not roomy enough when argueing though. She was a shoal draft, and sailed straight as an arrow down the face of 20ft. waves rounding Point Conception with the tiller pilot on. She did crack the liner on the floor while dropping off the face of some 15ft. steep waves for 18 hours. Some plywood, epoxy, and paint did her right though. Strong, and capable is how I would describe her...... i2f

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

I recently purchased a 1972 Columbia 30, Hull #101. I went to the Columbia Yacht Owners Association website, but I suspect it is no longer being maintained. Anyway, would like to get an email list of those of you who may own the old C-30 to share info about our boats.

Good for you @Seaojoy . I looked at the Columbia boats (a Columbia 36) before I selected my CAL. They are a nice boat with a strong hull. The broker showing the boat attested that the hull was "Bullet Proof". Here is a link that may help you. http://www.solopublications.com/sailcol.htm

I own a 1972 C-30 called Dawn Treader with a great Atomic 4 gas motor and extensively refurbished. She is hull number 035

@Gordon Foster : off topic but we are almost neighbours, I can see your marina from here.

Cool - we usually go through the Gulf Islands for our 2 week summer cruise stopping in at Bedwell Harbour for our customs entry point and of course we pass Saturna on the way. Great to connect with you !

We are getting ready for our summer cruise. Will be away May1 'til Sept. sometime. Mid - coast again this year.

@Gordon Foster you would save a trip to Bedwell with a Nexus Card. It's great to check in by phone. Don't forget the Saturna Lamb BBQ. July 1. Slip into Winter Cove through Boat or Georgeson Passages.

+1 on Nexus. It’s nice not to tie up at a port of entry. Hit the redline and CANPASS or CBP ROAM depending on direction of travel. Saved hours going Montague to Anacortes on Thursday.

Sorry for sounding confused, but I have for a long time had Nexus and do call in by phone. Canada makes us report to an official telephone reporting point on entering Canada, and most of the time there's nobody there. So, after arriving there, they just allow us to enter. The USA, on the other hand just clear us right in on the phone call and we are not asked to report to the physical reporting location. The boat is Canadian licensed and kept permanently on a permit issued for Wa. state. Canada customs wastes our time every year by making us go to the reporting station as if somebody will meet us there and there never is. Very annoying when you want to go up the sunshine coast or even up to Bowen Island or Gibsons directly, only to be detoured to RVYC at Jericho just to be told, nobody is coming and we are free to continue (after a totally needless detour to the east of our track) Or have things changed since last summer? Is this what CBP Roam is all about. Does it work in both directions?

I have never had that problem in either direction. Just been given a number over the phone. Mind you we have gone north the last 3 years so thing may have changed. Kept our E-28+ in Blaine without problems.

FINAL ANSWER ON THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS IN CANADA wasted https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/prog/nexus/marine-maritime-eng.html You will see from this documentation that you must proceed to an officially designated point of entry into Canada, whereupon you may or may not be met by a customs official. If nobody is there at the designated time of arrival you are free to proceed to your final destination. We have never been met by anyone in the last 4 years and feel like our time and efforts to comply are totally wasted as we have to go many miles, often in entirely the wrong direction just to avoid the risk of losing our NEXUS status. If they know they will not have anyone there to meet you, and you are already in Canadian waters why cant they simply place a device at all Canadian docks which you can photograph and text to them immediately on arriving at any port, like a barcode or a QR code? It's even more ridiculous when you have just left Canada a few hundred yards away from your US marina just to get in your boat again and pass through the same border a few hundred yards up the Georgia Strait again.

Last time I checked (3 years ago) Cabbage Island ( Gulf Islands National Park) and Horton Bay (Mayne Island) were designated SUMMER time sites. Has that changed?

I just call in from near the Canadian POE and say I’m xx Minutes from POE they ask questions and give me an entry number. I don’t dock unless they ask me to.

2 years ago we were told we MUST go to the designated site, but that there was a likelihood of nobody being there to meet us. When I asked if I could proceed into Canada I was told "I cannot tell you to do that" Do you really want to risk losing your NEXUS trusted traveller status - I don't think so. They have telephones on all the designated docks so they know if you didn't arrive there and make the call. Seems like they need to find a new system ! I'm fed up with the wasted time. If nobody is going to be there why waste a boater's time ? I never lie to these people but if they don't come they will never know who is smuggling contraband (or not)

Michael Davis, Don't know, never been into either one of those, but still no good if I am heading north to Howe Sound area or Sunshine Coast

True. It's a fair distance into Vancouver Harbour to detour as well. May have to move your boat over to the islands. The ferry may be faster than the detour!

We would like to be home ported back in Canada, but you cannot beat Pt. Roberts for location, price, or facilities available, even with the present lousy exchange rate - there is nothing that comes close for value for money. Plus it is only a very short drive for us as we live in the south end of Richmond, close to the Massey Tunnel.

Doesn't matter how much of a pain it is - I never lie to them and I do exactly what they ask me to. And, yes, the lady I spoke with last time was on the east coast of Canada and had not a clue of Canada's west coast geography. To them it looks like you just have to go around the corner to another reporting POE if one is closed. Time for a fresh and up to date solution to this time wasting nonsense.

Aquarius is easy to single hand, is great for day sailing yet sleeps five to six in four bunks (two in the fore-peak, one to two amidships, one on either side of the engine bay that has drop down sides for engine access). She's great for either a beginner or a seasoned sailor. O'Days are very popular, often raced, and there are several internet sites with information, forums and and offering of parts. I've had the pleasure of owning Aquarius for ten years now and I love her. We're relocating and after much procrastinating I realize that the ocean will just be too far way. The previous owners had her in Oyster Bay NY for many years. She is surprisingly fast yet very stable (2,230 lb lead keel) - although not suggested, we've powered through 6'-8' seas with her. She sails very close to the wind, is roomy with loads of storage, and you can stretch out on the 6'-6" cockpit seats with custom cushions (both with lockers beneath) or seat several. There's approximately 6' headroom. She has a 30 horse power Universal Atomic Four engine whereas most boats her size have either 9.9 HP outboards (which cavitate in lumpy water) or 7 to 13 HP diesels. She starts fast, runs clean. Uses about a gallon an hour. These are so popular that new parts are still made for it - even an optional hand crank! Here's one major source of new parts, service and info: moyermarine.com. She has a new jacket side plate from Moyer Marine. There's incredibly easy access to the engine from both sides and the front. There's even an engine "room" light. She has the original 12 gallon main gas tank along with the then optional 6 gallon plastic auxiliary tank (located on a shelf in the port side locker). Aquarius was made just before the cost of oil, gas and related resins sky-rocketed and caused many boat companies to skimp on construction and then to go out of business. Her hull is solid fiberglass - no balsa to worry about, and is about 3/8" thick. The prop is bronze. The prop shaft is bronze with a recent sacrificial zinc. I consider her the best year - 1975 had the best interior layout and has a lead ballasted fin keel with skeg mounted rudder (offering some protection to it). She has a 4' draft and nice freeboard which allows for usually dry sailing and calm guests.. My son worked at West Marine during school which gave us great discounts - she has new lifelines, new lazy jacks on the main boom, new main-sheet, new bronze thru-hull valves and Y-valve for the macerator toilet, new VHF radio, solar powered charger to keep her batteries charged between use, original Loran C, new coil and ignition parts, new water pump impeller, new engine exhaust pipe to the water muffler, new rubber diaphragm on her bilge pump, a cockpit tent in almost new shape, recent 12 volt receptacle, dual batteries with selector and gauge, tiller steering with nice looking new laminated wood tiller, old auto tiller, dual cockpit scuppers, cockpit cushions, anchor, teak and stainless steel swim ladder between the split stainless steel rear pulpit, auto-tiller, loads of storage, two sinks, cabin lights, electric macerator toilet between the fore peak and the main cabin with folding teak doors for privacy, curtains, cabin inclinometer, hanging locker, cockpit "table" (portable, that spans across the seats), storage under all the berths, a 12v hand vacuum, carpeting, a large ice box under a lid in the counter that drains to outside, alcohol stove plus a propane grill that attaches to hang off of the stern. There's a GPS/Depth sounder along with the original one that still works by a light revolving within its face and is entertaining to watch. There's roller furling, a wind vane and radio aerial atop the mast, stainless bow pulpit, a boom vang, a whisker pole for downwind sailing, genoa in reasonable shape, two jibs (one is older and a bit soiled), two mainsails (one also is older and a bit soiled). Two new stainless fishing rod holders, I've several life jackets, am/fm/cd stereo, full safety equipment including fire extinguishers, radar reflector ball, first aide kit, floodlight, Lifesling overboard rescue system, a flare gun, horn, boat hook etc. I can throw in a new medium sized dog life jacket if the buyer needs it. The upholstery is in very good condition. Loads of interior teak in good condition. The former owner gave us the original set of plastic dishes, silverware and ice tongs, and I'll give them to the new owner so they can stay with the boat. What I'm aware of: minor scars from dock battles etc, and a couple of soft deck spots which I was planning on repairing this season. The hardware & connections to the hull have been resealed over the years and should be checked. We had a problem with gunk in the main tank so we had it drained and we were planning on replacing it. We've been running off of the 6 gallon tank which has given us more than enough range. The sink hand pumps aren't working but I've a new electric pump to pressurize the system waiting to be installed (Whale offers refurbishment kits if you'd rather hand pump). The hatch boards are ready for replacement, last year there was minor weeping at the toilet - it may need tightening or a new gasket, and there's some minor rust here and there on the engine. Very little rain water weeps in from the ports - I do a yearly sealing but this year haven't gotten to it yet. She's a pretty dry boat. Aquarius has loads of spare parts including a new small holding tank for the toilet, new deck hardware along with a good-sized used winch for the cabin top to make single handling even easier, new electric water pump to pressurize the water system, new electric bilge pump - all ready to be installed. Obviously I love the boat - we weren't planning on moving from Brooklyn but the house that we've bought was an amazing deal in a historic small town and we realized that's where we want to semi-retire. She's out of the water in Gateway Marina (opposite Floyd Bennett Field) in Brooklyn open to the bay and to the ocean. The marina owes us a launch but it seemed to make sense to allow prospective buyers a look at her bottom. Here's more info: oday.sailboatowners.com, odayowners.com and iheartodays.com/model_oday_27 There was an ad in Craigslist for her but it was put in without my knowledge by a marina service employee. It was taken off. The boat is sold as is, and will need to be picked up or sailed from her location in Gateway Marina, Brooklyn, NY by the new owner. Storage and shipping arrangements are the responsibility of the purchaser. You may see the boat by appointment. She is fairly priced - serious offers only please. 1 dead, 2 missing, 2 rescued after boat capsizes in Columbia River bar

G ood Samaritans rescued two people in the Columbia River bar on Saturday after their 26-foot pleasure boat capsized, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

An additional person pulled from the water by other boaters died at a hospital, and two other missing people are presumed dead, according to Petty Officer 2nd Class Briana Carter.

The unidentified rescuers swooped in around 10:30 a.m. Saturday, and Coast Guard rescuers joined them by sea and air shortly after, Carter said. But the search was called off just after 9 p.m. The Daily Astorian newspaper identified the missing people as a 54-year-old man and an 11-year-old boy.

It was not immediately clear what caused the boat to capsize, and the names of the people aboard it have not been released publicly.

Conservationist details nature preservation efforts on Salish Sea islands in new book

How local people and grassroots organizations can protect nature.

A long-time conservationist on B.C.'s west coast has penned a new book highlighting the importance of protecting nature on and around the islands of the Salish Sea.

Sheila Harrington, a Lasqueti Island resident who has been involved with conservation efforts for 30 years, travelled by boat to 17 islands in the Salish Sea to interview more than 50 fellow conservationists about the history of efforts to preserve habitats in the area.

It was while Harrington was living on Salt Spring Island that she decided to get involved with conservation.

But recently, when a local conservationist passed away, she felt it was something of a wake-up call — she felt she needed to share the history of the work she and her peers had been doing since the 1990s.

"I think this history needs to be told," she told CBC's North by Northwest host Margaret Gallagher. "It could be lost."

So, over the past three years, she researched and wrote Voices for the Islands: Thirty Years of Nature Conservation on the Salish Sea .

a book leaned up against a tree

The book's chapters are divided by island, showcasing the distinct stories each one has to tell.

"Each island has its own unique beginnings," Harrington said. "I think that's kind of inspirational for readers because they can see how there's such a diversity of ways that people can get involved."

Bowen Island bluff, featuring trees, rocks and ocean

She said the islands are home to several ecosystems that need to be protected, including the coastal Douglas fir ecosystem, old-growth forests, wetlands, grasslands and kelp forests.

"All kinds of marine life depend on healthy kelp forests and healthy eel grass, which is something that kind of disappeared around the Salish Sea," Harrington said.

"It all starts with the sea otters. When the sea otters were wiped out , they stopped feeding on the sea urchins and the sea urchins ate the eel grass. So you see how it's all this cascading impact from our own impacts on the world."

Seals are pictured among kelp

But the challenges around conservation are ever-increasing as development increases.

Harrington worries that newcomers to the islands of the Salish Sea don't understand the importance of their natural surroundings.

"They just move too quickly and do things too quickly without getting to know the land," she said.

red and green sea urchins

Covenants on land can be one solution, she said, where landowners ensure that future owners can't do certain things with it that would harm the area.

As well, she said, education for newcomers to the islands helps people understand their impact.

Continued conservation efforts

Originally, Harrington said, her goal was to interview people who founded organizations doing the work to protect those ecosystems.

But then, she met some of the younger folks who are continuing that work.

In particular, she recalls meeting a group of students on Pender Island who had made maps showing that the purple martin, a large swallow, had made its way up to the island from Costa Rica. They'd also held workshops to talk about the importance of eel grass and shorelines.

An orca pops out of the ocean, while another one's fin s pictured

"These young people are just so enthusiastic," she said.

"And many of the older people I interviewed, when I asked them, what hope do you have for the future? Do you have hope for the future? Almost all of them said their hope was in the young people."

Harrington's hope for the future of nature conservation?

"My hope for the future is that we can protect 30 to 50 per cent of the islands because this development is just happening so quickly everywhere around," she said.

"We have to conserve as much as we can, as soon as we can."

  1. COLUMBIA 30

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.
