APBA Releases 2022 Offshore Racing Schedule
With the Offshore Powerboat Association , Powerboat P1 and Race World Offshore as race-producing member-organizations, the American Power Boat Association had no shortage of offshore races to consider sanctioning this season. That subject was among the topics during the organization’s annual meeting last week in Orlando, Fla., and now the APBA competition schedule for the 2022 season is complete.

Here’s a quick look at what’s on tap this year:
APBA National Series Races
May 19-22—Cocoa Beach, Fla. June 4—Lake of the Ozarks., Mo. July 2-3—Sarasota, Fla. July 31—St. Clair, Mich. August 6-7-— Michigan City, Ind. September 3-4, St. Petersburg, Fla. September 30-October 2—Clearwater, Fla. October 8—Fort Myers Beach, Fla.
APBA/Union Internatonale Motonautique World Championships
November 6-13—Key West, Fla.( All catamaran classes ) November 19-20—Englewood Beach, Fla. ( All V-bottom classes )
APBA Regional Races
May 15—Ocean City, Md. June 12—Point Pleasant Beach, N.J. July 10—Eastlake, Ohio September 10-11—Morehead City, N.C.
World titles in the catamaran classes will be decided at November 6-13 event in Key West, Fla.
For the eight national events, the Offshore Powerboat Association will produce the Lake of the Ozarks, St. Clair, Michigan City and Fort Myers Beach contests. The organization also will produce the Englewood Beach world championship event, as well as all the regional races. Powerboat P1 will produce the Cocoa Beach, Sarasota and St. Petersburg events. Race World Offshore will produce the Clearwater contest and weeklong Key West event.
As noted above, Englewood Beach will be the official site of APBA/UIM World Championships for all V-bottom classes. In 2021 the Southwest Florida venue was home to the APBA/UIM Worlds for the Bracket classes.
The adoption of the Mercury Racing 860 engine as a power option for the Super Cat class was not finalized during the APBA meeting—nor was a decision on a drop-race format, a setup in which teams get to drop their worst result in a given race series.
The Spec and Bracket V-bottom classes will vie for world championship honors in Englewood Beach, Fla.
“The meetings went well,” said Rich Luhrs, the chairman of APBA’s Offshore category. “We resolved a number of things. But we still have a lot of work to do before the season begins.”

Powerboat P1 has announced its P1 Offshore race calendar for the 2024 season, which sees the series heading to Wisconsin again and returning to favorite venues in Florida. The Sarasota and St. Petersburg Grand Prix events on Florida’s Gulf Coast move away from their traditional dates around the Independence Day and Labor Day vacations respectively, and should provide an exhilarating climax to the season in September and October.
Cocoa Beach on the Space Coast will again host the season opener in mid-May with a weekend of fast boats and cold drinks. Thunder On Cocoa Beach will be celebrating its 15th anniversary of staging this event and its Executive Director, Kerry Bartlett, will be unveiling special plans to mark this milestone. In August, racing will return to Sheboygan on the western shore of Lake Michigan for a second year. Sheboygan Area Tourism Zone reported that last season’s inaugural Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge delivered an economic impact of $4.7 million with more than 40,000 attending the three-day festival, and this year’s event in August will be open to all offshore classes. Mayor Ryan Sorenson said: “I am thrilled to welcome back this exhilarating event to the Malibu of the Midwest. It not only showcases our City’s stunning waterfront but also brings together the community in celebration of speed, skill and the thrill of competition. This sense of excitement and unity contributes to the vibrancy of Sheboygan.” City Administrator Casey Bradley added: “This event not only brings a surge of energy to our City but also underscores our commitment to hosting world class events. We appreciate the partnership with Powerboat P1 and Mercury Racing, and we eagerly anticipate the positive impact the race event will have on our local economy and community spirit.”
Another event milestone will be celebrated in September with the 40th anniversary of the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix, making it the second longest-running powerboat festival in the United States. For decades the racing has been a unique, prestigious event that brings significant value to the county. Local media reports that it generates millions of dollars in economic impact every year with up to 16,000 room nights, and P1’s national and international television deals showcase the city’s many attractions to an audience of more than 200 million homes. Pete Harvey , Director of Sports at Visit Sarasota County commented: “The Grand Prix draws enthusiastic crowds, capturing the attention of visitors and residents alike. It attracts a diverse range of attendees which generates a sizeable surge in tourism and spending.”
The season finale will see the race teams head along the Gulf Coast to St. Petersburg for the Monster Energy St. Pete Grand Prix. Now in its fourth year, the event has quickly become a favorite venue will the racers and it will see the APBA national champions crowned in October. “We’re excited to see one of America’s best waterfront locations selected to host the Powerboat P1 grand prix event,” said Visit St. Pete/Clearwater President/CEO Brian Lowack . “We love the opportunity to show off the spectacular downtown St. Pete waterfront and award-winning St. Pete Pier as spectators come from near and far to our beautiful destination or tune in on TV around the globe to see some of the most exciting action on water.”
Dave Gowland of Monster Energy said: “We love all forms of racing at Monster Energy and entering the UIM Class 1 World Championship and APBA National Championship, as well as the P1 AquaX National Championship, in 2023 genuinely thrilled us with the sport’s amazing and vibrant mix of racing, competition and amazing fan attention, interaction and enthusiasm. We’re thrilled to title sponsor the final round of the national championship.”
Seven teams are expected to compete in this season’s UIM Class 1 World Championship and races will be staged at the P1 Offshore events. Powerboat P1’s aim is to attract more teams and build the worldwide television audience to return Class 1 to the summit of the sport. “Our goal is to have a fleet of 12 boats by 2025” said P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala . “We want to grow the world championship commercially and promote the series both in the United States and internationally to deliver enhanced value for race teams, host venues, sponsors and partners.” “The 2023 offshore season was one of great change and growth” explains Rangoonwala. “This season we will seek further growth by focusing on attracting more competitors, particularly young racers, improving the fan experience, continuing to build our social media audience and broadening the international reach of our TV broadcast deals. Having celebrated our 20th anniversary last year, Powerboat P1 is embarking on its third decade as a promoter and we will continue to design our race events to encourage tourism and enhance the profile of the host venues. Partnerships are at the heart of our business and over the coming months we will be announcing new agreements as well as the renewal of existing sponsorships.”

We will dedicate our time to produce accurate factual stories and to promote the sport to a wider global audience.
The American Power Boat Association (APBA) has announced its plans for the 2021 race season which include a comprehensive calendar of events for all offshore classes.
This is the first time for more than 30 years that the APBA has sanctioned all offshore powerboat racing events and the full calendar was confirmed and released at the Annual Meeting of the Offshore Racing Commission today.
Using one set of general racing rules, the schedule includes both Na9onal and Regional Championships, UIM/APBA sanctioned World Championships for each class, the OPA Kilo Run and the Ocean Cup Series.
This month marks Rich Luhrs’ first anniversary as Chairman of the APBA Offshore Racing Commission and he said:
As a result of the combined efforts of the Offshore Powerboat Association, Powerboat P1, Race World Offshore and Ocean Cup, racers and fans will be treated to the largest and most varied program of events in many years. Thanks to the intense effort, teamwork and passion of these race promoters there really will be something for everyone to support and enjoy.
Following the announcement last October that it had signed an exclusive 10-year deal with the UIM to organise and promote Class 1 offshore racing, Powerboat P1 released a six-venue race calendar which kicks off in May at Cocoa Beach on Florida’s Atlantic Coast.
P1 also reached agreement with the APBA to obtain the exclusive worldwide rights to film and distribute its offshore events for the next 10 years.
Azam Rangoonwala, chief executive of P1, explained:
Putting in place these two significant, far-reaching agreements allows us to develop the UIM Class 1 Championship commercially and promote the series both nationally and globally to deliver enhanced value for race teams, venues, sponsors and partners. Each event on our schedule will be live-streamed in its entirety on our Facebook page, meaning all classes in addition to Class 1 will receive coverage. We will also produce a one-hour television program from each race to air at a later date. Our principal aim is to return Class 1 to the pinnacle of offshore racing by attracting more teams and building the worldwide television audience. We will work closely with everyone involved in offshore racing to unite the sport and meet this objective.
Rich Luhrs added:
APBA Offshore is pleased to be part of this new TV relationship with P1 because we feel that quality broadcast coverage is a basic building block for any successful motorsport.
Opening its extensive season with the Ocean City Grand Prix in Maryland at the end of April, the OPA National Championship Series features six events which, together with the other races on its roster, count towards APBA High Points Championships in all applicable classes.
OPA president Ed ‘Smitty’ Smith said:
We’ve never had this many races on a schedule before – I just love this sport. We’ll promote or co-promote at least one offshore race event a month from April through to November and again partner with Powerboat P1 to stage a six venue APBA Offshore Championship series. We’ll head back to Maryland in July for the OPA Kilo Run in Baltimore.
The APBA Offshore Championship will return to four of its 2019 venues, starting at Cocoa Beach in May, with the St. Pete Powerboat Grand Prix and Key West Championships joining the schedule.
RWO president Larry Bliel commented:
I have been working tirelessly to make this year’s UIM/APBA World Championships in Key West the largest event ever in the southern-most city of the United States. I am looking forward to working with all the APBA offshore promoters and race teams, combining our efforts to restore the sport of offshore racing to its former glory and plan for the future.

The 2021 schedule includes a long-distance Ocean Cup event in early October and veteran racer Nigel Hook explains:
The series revives the tradition of real offshore racing using technology to share the virtual experience live with an international audience. The second annual Ocean Cup will be part of The Great Pacific Airshow at Huntington Beach, attracting two million people to watch the powerboat world record attempt off the southern California coast as well as top military performers in the air.

Key west worlds race no.3 - imposing their will.
Eric Colby, SOTW: Throughout the 42-year history of the offshore powerboat racing world championships, there are tales of teams that finished in the middle of the pack on Sunday but did enough to claim the title because they had done the math to determine where they needed to finish. Then there were those winner-take-all battles in which the numbers didn’t matter because the contenders were all so close coming into the finale. ... Continued ...

Key west worlds race no. 2 - setting the stage for the finale.
Eric Colby, SOTW: There’s an almost inexplicable allure about Key West. Sure, former TV announcer and pro wrestler Stan Lane coined the phrase, “To be the best, you must win Key West,” but the racers take this motto to heart. The combination of the possibility of myriad conditions on the same course and the tightest corner in the famous harbor make the Key West championship arguably the most sought-after trophy in the sport. ...
