HH Catamarans – a new range of performance cruisers from China

A range of fast-paced, sleek and modern-looking boats from Hudson Yacht & Marine based in south-west China will include cats from 55ft to 115ft, reports Elaine Bunting

HH Catamarans is a name you may not have heard of (yet), but behind this new brand is one of the largest-scale investments and boldest thinking in some years. The plans are ambitious, with a range of big, fast, luxurious catamarans up to superyacht scale.

The company is Hudson Yacht & Marine, based in south-west China, which sees its main market in Europe and the US, hence its appearance in Annapolis.

At the new facility in Xiamen, an island city lying between Hong Kong and Shanghai, the first is being built of what is to be a range of catamarans from 55ft to 115ft: the HH55, HH66, HH77, HH88 and HH115.

Four HH66s have been sold and are already in production. The first is due to launch in February for an Asian owner, and tooling for the HH55 is underway.

If the appearance of these resembles the Gunboat range more than the average production cruising cat, that is hardly surprising: the designs are the work of Morrelli & Melvin, the design team responsible for 18 Gunboats, and whose expertise in performance multihulls over the years spans A Class and Nacra catamarans to the late Steve Fossett’s PlayStation and, more recently, BMW Oracle Racing.

All will be fast-paced, sleek and modern-looking boats aimed at fast passagemaking and comfortable open plan ‘indoor/outdoor’ living. The HH55 and HH66 are styled as ‘a light and strong raceboat in disguise’. The HH66 is in composite construction, primarily aimed at cruising but, according to Morrelli & Melvin, “able to kick it up a notch”. So it is ultra light, and has C-shape daggerboards and T-foil rudders.

The HH55 is available in two configurations: forward cockpit and centre steering or dual aft steering and either in full-on performance-mode carbon composite construction or a less costly epoxy/E-Glass alternative. It, too, features C-shape daggerboards and T-foil rudders.

NZ builder brought in

Besides commissioning Morrelli & Melvin for the designs, owner Hudson Wang brought in New Zealand boatbuilder Paul Hakes four years ago. Hakes, a well known racing boat builder very experienced in building in pre-preg carbon, admits that he was “quite taken aback” by the scale of the company’s commitment to building boats – to date it has spent US$50m on building a boatyard. In that time Hakes has built several of the Judel Vrojlik-designed HH42, the best known example of which is Richard Matthews’s Oystercatcher XXX .

Hudson sees yacht manufacture as part of a serial manufacturing operation. The company’s products are wide-ranging. It produces around 20 per cent of baseball bats bought in the US, makes aircraft escape slides, barbecues and coolers, and employs some 4,000 people, of which 400 are in the boatyard. Its history in boats goes back to building J/80s and RIBs.

Tooling for the HH55 is also well underway. Paul Hakes tells us that the yard has finished a new fit-out hall and now has capability to have four or five HH66s and five to six HH55s in build at a time.

Preliminary drawings for the HH88 have been done and sufficient structural detail to allow price estimates. Designer Gino Morrelli says that the company is in talks with two potential owners.

Morrelli emphasises that the range could also go beyond the 115-footer currently planned. “We think the yard has capability to go to 150ft and they’ve built their new building to get that out the door, as that is where we think we will be in five to six years.”

Each of these boats can be highly customised, and renderings show very modern interiors. The zingy hull colours illustrated emphasise the message that Hudson is aiming to appeal to owners not hidebound by tradition, and perhaps migrating from motorboats.

The fact that the business has put its weight so strongly behind multihull production is yet another indication of growing interest in this area of sailing. “As far as the sailing market is concerned, the share of multihulls is growing, and bigger boats are coming out [of the downturn] faster than smaller boats,” says Morrelli.

Boats made in China

Boats made in China were subject to additional duties under the Section 301 provisions.  These duties were in addition to the regular duty rate, and covered all boats made in China, whether new or used. Effective September 24, 2018, the rate was 10%.   On May 10, 2019, that rate was increased to 25%.

On June 22, 2020, the U.S. Trade Representative issued an exclusion to these tariffs for the following type of boats:

Motorboats with displacement hulls of reinforced fiberglass and wood, each motorboat measuring not less than 14.47 m and not more than 36.57 m in length, and weighing not less than 28 t and not more than 363 t, powered by inboard engines, other than inboard/outdrive (described in statistical reporting 8903.962.0065)

Boats that meet this limited description are no longer subject to the 25% duty.  Entries on which duty has been paid may be eligible for duty refund requests, depending on when they were imported.

This exclusion will apply until August 7, 2020.

Chinese Navy Ships Sail Into 'NATO Lake'

A pair of Chinese navy ships were escorted into the Baltic Sea by NATO vessels on Saturday local time as they steamed toward the Russian city of St. Petersburg for this year's Navy Day celebrations.

Footage from a live bridge camera captured the moment a Danish patrol boat led the Chinese destroyer Jiaozuo and fleet oiler Honghu past Denmark 's Baltic islands, according to an X post by ship spotter Markus Jonsson (a pseudonym).

Kurt Pedersen, another ship spotter, posted photographs of the Chinese warships as they sailed under Denmark's Great Belt Bridge deeper into the Baltic Sea , which received the nickname "NATO Lake" following the accession of Finland and Sweden.

The Jiaozuo , a Type 052D guided-missile destroyer, and the Honghu , a Type 903A replenishment ship, are both in service with China 's South Sea Fleet based on the South China Sea. The ship classes have the NATO classifications Luyang III and Fuchi, respectively.

NATO 's Allied Maritime Command and the Danish navy did not immediately respond to separate written requests to comment on the encounter at sea.

The two-ship flotilla is part of China's 46th naval escort task force, of the country's counter-piracy contributions off the Horn of Africa since 2008.

A ship cam detected the vessels leaving the Mediterranean Sea and entering the North Atlantic Ocean early last week, and the Chinese Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday that they had concluded a five-day port call in Morocco's Casablanca port on July 14.

China 's Defense Ministry and Russia's Foreign Ministry could not be reached for comment out of hours.

The Jiaozuo and the Honghu will spend the next hours sailing past NATO's sea borders and the Russian Baltic Fleet headquarters of Kaliningrad, before reaching St. Petersburg.

Every last Sunday of July, the city hosts Russia's annual Navy Day celebrations, when President Vladimir Putin and other top military officials watch a naval parade from the nearby island of Kronstadt.

Earlier this week, however, St. Petersburg officials said the parade on July 28— the main event —had been canceled for unknown reasons, with downscaled celebrations still to be held across the city.

Local media said ships of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy were expected to attend.

China sent ships to St. Petersburg for the first time in 2017. In 2019, one of its destroyers was also among the visiting foreign vessels amid growing strategic alignment and military cooperation with Russia .

Russia's Pacific Fleet, based in the Sea of Japan, said this week that one of its frigates completed a 15-day joint naval exercise with a group of Chinese warships in the South China Sea, sailing 4,800 nautical miles in total.

Trump's 17-year-old granddaughter Kai says it was "heartbreaking" when he was shot

Former President Donald Trump's 17-year-old granddaughter took to the stage at the Republican National Convention Wednesday night to share a side of her grandfather she said most people don't see. 

Kai is the daughter of Donald Trump Jr., and his ex-wife, Vanessa Trump. Kai said she her dad to speak at the RNC  on Monday.

"The media makes my grandpa seem like a different person," Kai said. "But I know him for who he is. He is very caring and loving. He truly wants the best for this country. And he will fight every single day to make America great again." 

Kai said her grandfather always wants to know how his grandchildren are doing out at school, and when she made the honor roll, printed it out to show his friends. 

"He calls me during the middle of the school day to ask how my golf game is going, and tells me all about his," Kai said. "But then I have to remind him that I'm in school and I'll have to call him back later."

If the two aren't on the same team during a golf game, Kai said her grandfather will try to get into her head. 

"But I have to remind him, I'm a Trump, too," she said, smiling. 

Kai, like her grandfather, is an avid golfer. She frequently posts photos of her golf game on Instagram. 

But Kai brought up heavier topics, too, referring to the criminal cases leveled against her grandfather. 

"Even when he's going through all these court cases, he always asks me how I'm doing," she said. 

She said she was "shocked" to hear the news Saturday that her grandfather had been shot during his rally in Pennsylvania. Trump's injury wasn't serious, although he wore a bandage over his right ear on Wednesday. 

"On Saturday, I was shocked when I heard that he has been shot," she said. "And I just wanted to know if he was OK. It was heartbreaking that someone would do that to another person. A lot of people have put my grandpa through hell, and he's still standing."

3 takeaways from Trump’s speech, final night of the Republican convention

Trump delivered an initially powerful but ultimately bizarrely meandering speech, as the convention played up the assassination attempt against him.

MILWAUKEE — Welcome to The Campaign Moment. This week, we’re running through the big moments and trends from the Republican National Convention.

The big moment

The 2024 GOP convention came to a close Thursday night, with former president Donald Trump formally accepting his party’s nomination just five days after surviving an assassination attempt.

But even that story wasn’t necessarily the biggest of Thursday, as the potential exit of the opponent Republicans had spent four days attacking — President Biden — loomed larger and larger .

Here’s our final set of takeaways from the convention week that was.

1. A tale of two Trump speeches: powerful and perplexing

The first 15 minutes of Trump’s speech were powerful, as he recounted Saturday’s assassination attempt.

The rest of the more than 90-minute-long speech was thoroughly confusing. It meandered between points, often going off-script with ad-libs that left a standard-issue Trump campaign speech without the kind of coherent, lofty theme that defines traditional presidential convention fare. And Trump’s initially subdued manner and calls for unity didn’t match the content of an often-divisive speech.

Trump grabbed the audience with a promise to discuss what happened Saturday, but qualified it by saying he would only do it once, “because it’s actually too painful to tell.”

He celebrated slain firefighter Corey Comperatore and two others who were shot.

Perhaps the most powerful moment came when Trump said, “I’m not supposed to be here tonight.” The crowd began chanting, “Yes you are!” Trump ultimately responded, “Thank you, but I’m not.”

“Despite such a heinous attack, we unite this evening more determined than ever,” Trump wrapped up that section. “I am more determined than ever. So are you. So is everybody. … Our resolve is unbroken, and our purpose is unchanged.”

Also unchanged: Virtually the rest of his speech, undifferentiated from a normal Trump stump speech.

Despite the call for unity, Trump soon referred to “crazy Nancy Pelosi,” repeatedly cited false allegations of stolen elections, called for the firing of the head of the United Auto Workers, cited the “China virus” and the “invasion” at the Southern border. He called a Democratic senator a “total lightweight.” He even repeated a puzzling allusion to “ the late, great Hannibal Lecter ,” from “The Silence of the Lambs,” which he’s used before.

All of it was familiar from Trump’s speeches — as was the extensive ad-libbing. But this wasn’t just any Trump speech. This was a different venue, his introduction to many more casual voters who might not eat up his many musings.

The assassination attempt probably drew even more eyeballs to him, and it’s not clear what those new viewers took away, beyond that Trump was nearly killed five days ago.

“So I’d better finish strong,” Trump said at one point. “Otherwise we’ll blow it. And we can’t let that happen.”

2. Republicans trolled Democrats on replacing Biden

As Democrats appeared to inch closer to replacing their 2024 standard-bearer, Republicans decided now would be a good time to stir the pot.

Previously, some high-profile Republicans made clear their preference for facing Biden and began attacking Vice President Harris more . But Wednesday, their move was to try to stoke Democratic divisions, casting any attempt to replace the nominee as a brazen and even undemocratic one.

Top Trump campaign adviser Chris LaCivita, at a CNN/Politico event, called it an attempted “coup” and an effort to “ depose ” Biden “that’s going to create a whole host of different issues.”

At another event, former Trump acting director of national intelligence Richard Grenell called efforts to switch nominees “ outrageous ” and urged the media to declare that “you don’t get to dump this [president]. This is what happens in other countries, not in America.”

On X, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) labeled it an “ insurrection .”

None of these descriptions actually fit; Democrats are trying to persuade Biden to drop out, not overturn the primary results themselves. But as the Biden loyalists get a little quieter , there’s certainly value for Republicans in framing things this way in hopes of riling them (or perhaps even Biden) up.

At the very least, Republicans seemed to be having some fun trolling Democrats over their discord.

3. They leaned in on the assassination attempt — and maybe God’s favoritism

Trump wasn’t the only one to focus extensively on the assassination attempt.

Speakers repeatedly pitched it and Trump’s response as evidence of Trump’s resolve, courage — and possibly even God’s will that he be president.

Eric Trump focused on it, calling Trump “a man who survived a bullet that was intended to eliminate him permanently from our future and from our family.”

“You wiped the blood off your face,” Eric Trump said. “And you put your fist in the air, in a moment that will be remembered as one of the most courageous acts in the history of American politics.”

Trump lawyer Alina Habba said Trump “did not just take a bullet in Butler, Pennsylvania. He has and will continue to take them for each and every one of us.”

While other Trump supporters have posited that God intervened to save Trump, a couple of speakers seemed to go a little further to suggest it showed God’s favoritism.

Evangelical leader Franklin Graham, unlike many others pointing to possible divine intervention, noted that firefighter Corey Comperatore was not spared.

“I cannot explain why God would save one life and allow another one to be taken,” Graham said. “I don’t have the answer for that.”

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson suggested that he did have that answer.

“When he stood up after being shot in the face, bloodied, and put his hand up, I thought at that moment that was a transformation. This was no longer a man. Well, I think that I think it was divine intervention,” Carlson said, adding: “This was the leader of a nation.”

Carlson added: “I think a lot of people are wondering, what is this? This doesn’t look like politics. Something bigger is going on here. I think even people who don’t believe in God are beginning to think, well, maybe there’s something to this, actually.”

You’ll have a shell of a good time celebrating the state’s star crustacean during the annual Maine Lobster Festival, happening July 31 to Aug. 4 at Harbor Park in Rockland.

The festival’s five-day schedule features an arts and crafts show, parade and tasting event.

Other highlights of the Maine Lobster Festival include the International Great Crate Race, during which participants attempt to race across a string of lobster traps in Rockland Harbor. There’s also a seafood cooking contest, road race and plenty of kids’ activities.

Some of the musical acts performing over the five days are Paddy Mills, Rigometrics, Charlie and The Hustle and Julia Gagnon.

Don’t forget about the actual lobsters. You’ll have plenty of chances to eat your fill.
