You Can Charter the 151-Foot Superyacht From the New ‘Knives Out’ Movie for $228,000 a Week

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The sequel to Rian Johnson’s 2019 murder mystery Knives Out is making waves in more ways than one.

It’s estimated that Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery earned a solid $15 million in a one-week limited release. The whodunit has received wholly positive reviews and a rare 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. It has also produced one quite unlikely star: a luxury superyacht known as Aquarius , which is, coincidentally, available for charter .

Former NBA Star Tony Parker Just Got a Sleek New 110-Foot Explorer Yacht--Here's a Look Inside

This New Superyacht Has a Beautiful Aft Deck That Can Expand to Nearly 1,100 Square Feet

The 151-footer served as a backdrop for one of the key scenes in Glass Onion . The yacht’s captain, Ali Göksoy, also scored a cameo in the film. For a couple of hundred thousand a week, you too can experience a little Hollywood glitz and glamor aboard Aquarius .

Delivered by Turkey’s Mengi Yay in 2016, the superyacht pairs a straight bow with a handsome wood hull and superstructure. She offers a generous interior with five lavish cabins for up to 10 guests. The main deck owner’s stateroom features a king-sized bed, two balconies, an office and an en suite. On the lower deck, you’ll find three double staterooms and a twin cabin. There will also be a crew of nine catering to your every whim as if you were an A-lister.

Outside, meanwhile, Aquarius sports a veritable beach club at the stern, a Jacuzzi on the foredeck, a sizable flybridge and several other spots for sunning. She also comes with a full fleet of toys and tenders in case you need to make a quick escape. The vessel even has a spot on the aft deck for a couple of roadsters.

As for grunt, Aquarius is powered by twin Caterpillar engines that give her a cruising speed of 12 knots and a top speed of 15 knots. Of course, the yacht’s also equipped with stabilizers that make cruising the Mediterranean a real treat.

Aquarius is available exclusively with Ocean Independence . You can book her for charter in Turkey for roughly $228,000 (€220,000) a week.

Ocean independence shines on the silver screen, written by emily bunn, december 7, 2022.

One of the biggest blockbuster debuts of 2020, Knives Out is now being followed up by its whodunit sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery . Leading luxury superyacht charter company, Ocean Independence , makes an appearance in the film with one of its most extraordinary vessels .

Ocean Independence Aquarius Yacht

The murder mystery flick tells the tale of a tech billionaire’s private island retreat with friends. After one of his guests ends up dead, Detective Benoit Blanc investigates the crime.

The star-studded cast includes Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, with Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista.

However, one of the undeniably biggest stars of the film is not an actor or actress, but is the setting for one of the crime comedy’s key scenes. Part of the film is set on Captain Ali Göksoy’s 46 meter superyacht, Aquarius .

Ocean Independence Aquarius Yacht

Aquarius can accommodate up to ten guests in five cabins. Boaters can also unwind on one of several balconies, in the Jacuzzi, or at the sprawling beach club.

Glass Onion : You can charter the Aquarius, the sublime superyacht in the new Netflix film

DIRECTOR RIAN JOHNSON HAD BIG PLANS FOR GLASS ONION . HERE IS A GUIDED TOUR OF THE AQUARIUS, THE FABULOUS SUPERYACHT THAT APPEARS IN DANIEL CRAIG’S NEW WHODUNIT FILM.

The Aquarius, the gorgeous superyacht in Netflix’s Glass Onion

Director Rian Johnson went big for this new chapter of detective Benoit Blanc’s adventures. Gone is the family mansion from Knives Out , and they’re off to Greece and the AMAN Resort’s sublime Villa 20 for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery . In the film, to get to billionaire Miles Bron’s (Edward Norton) private island, his friends and Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) board the Aquarius, a luxury superyacht.

This fabulous ship was built in 2016 by Mengi Yay, a Turkish shipbuilder specialised in these exceptional boats. To meet the needs of the luxury market, the Aquarius has all the characteristics of a high-end establishment right on the water. It can accommodate up to 10 people with its five magnificent cabins, each equipped with a sleeping area and a private bathroom. For common rooms, it has a large living area entirely surrounded by windows leading out to a large balcony on each side. Outside, there is a large lounge, a jacuzzi and several sunbathing areas awaiting holidaymakers.

Operated by the agency Ocean Independence , Aquarius cruises take place in the Mediterranean basin throughout the year. For €220,000 a week, passengers will be able to appreciate the comfort and beauty of the ship and the Greek coast, just like the characters in Glass Onion , but boaters can avoid the film’s disastrous mysteries!

Already being hailed as better than the original , Rian Johnson’s sequel to Knives Out – Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery – sees the return of Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc, alongside an eccentric cast of stars old and new. While critics have applauded the standout performances from Craig, Dave Bautista, Kate Hudson, Ed Norton, Janelle Monáe, and more, it’s their 151-foot floating accomplice Aquarius that got the BH office talking.

Built by Mengi Yay circa 2016, the Knives Out 2 superyacht Aquarius broke convention for the Turkish shipyard and influenced a new era of yacht design, dominated by expansive beach clubs. Fanboys with pockets as deep as the Thrombey family tech billionaire Miles Bron can create their own whodunnit aboard the very yacht in question, which is available to charter for a paltry €220,000 per week (AU$337,000) exclusively via Ocean Independence.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery  arrives on Netflix later this month just before Christmas (December 23rd).

Glass Onion: 9 Behind-The-Scenes Facts About Netflix's Knives Out Sequel

Peering through the dense layers of this fun mystery.

Janelle Monae and Daniel Craig in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

It is no mystery why the 2022 follow-up to Knives Out has won the hearts of most critics , become an enduring hit on Netflix’s trending page , and received a 2023 Academy Award nomination for its screenplay. However, Glass Onion (which is how I will refer to it because writer and director Rian Johnson prefers it without the subtitle , A Knives Out Mystery ), is not without its mysteries beyond the twisted murder case at the center of its story.

Related: Trending On Netflix: The Top 10 Lists For Movies And TV

Well, we decided to pull a Benoit Blanc and get to the bottom of some of the best kept secrets surrounding one of the best movies of 2022 (in our opinion) and one of the best movies released on Netflix in 2022 (or best movies on Netflix ever, for that matter). Regardless of how much you agree with those statements, you may not be able to deny that there are fascinating behind-the-scenes facts to reveal about Glass Onion and we have compiled our most interesting favorites below.

The Beatles in The Beatles: Get Back

A Beatles Song Inspired The Title, Glass Onion

As a fan of The Beatles, I was just as surprised as Rian Johnson to learn how few people made the connection between Glass Onion and the Fab Four’s eponymous track off of 1968’s The White Album when the film’s title was officially announced in 2022 . In fact, the filmmaker has an interesting story that he revealed to Deadline as to how the song that plays during the end credits inspired the name:

I’d gotten to a point where I had the idea of a central metaphor that Blanc could latch onto and beat like a dead horse. Something that was made of glass. Something that was layered, but the center was in plain sight, and so on. And I thought, OK, well the billionaire is going to have an island, and maybe he has some structure on it that’s made of glass, so… is it a glass castle? Is it a glass palace? I literally opened the music app on my phone and just searched the word ‘glass,’ and ‘Glass Onion’ popped up.

Knives Out is also synonymous with a Radiohead song, but Johnson insisted to the Los Angeles Times that the connection ends at the name and that he -- a massive fan of the band -- had the phrase in his head at the time he was writing. It makes me wonder what tune the franchise’s upcoming third installment could be named after if the filmmaker goes in that direction again.

Netflix logo

Netflix Spent Millions For The Streaming Rights To Glass Onion

With all of the cancelled series it has picked up (i.e., Manifest) and nostalgic favorites it has revived (such as That ‘90s Show , a continuation of That ‘70s Show ), Netflix is becoming the Number One place to — not necessarily start, but — continue a franchise. One of the most famous and expensive examples of this is when it acquired distribution rights to Glass Onion .

In 2021, according to The Hollywood Reporter , a “discreet” auction that competitors like Amazon and Apple participated in was closed out when Netflix became the home to the Knives Out sequel (and the series’ upcoming third installment) for $469 million. That is the kind of money that suspects of Benoit Blanc’s cases often kill for.

Daniel Craig in Glass Onion

Daniel Craig Had To Relearn Benoit Blanc’s Accent

Speaking of Benoit Blanc, the gentleman sleuth is known for speaking in a unique “Foghorn Leghorn Southern drawl” as Chris Evans ’ Ransom Drysdale describes in Knives Out . However, recapturing that distinct accent for Glass Onion proved to be a challenge for Daniel Craig.

The British former James Bond actor revealed to Empire that he had forgotten how to speak like the astute private eye since he first originated him in 2019. So, in the hope of avoiding doing a “pastiche,” he worked with an accent coach for months to make sure he sounded as authentic as possible.

Kaley Cuoco Auditioned For Kate Hudson’s Role

While a part of us wishes we could have seen more of the Knives Out cast reprise their roles alongside Craig in the sequel, that would have meant we wouldn't have gotten Glass Onion ’s wonderful ensemble , which also includes Janelle Monae , Edward Norton , and Dave Bautista . Someone who really wanted to be in the sequel, as she recalls in the excerpt from a Glamour interview below, was Kaley Cuoco:

I was convinced [the part was mine]. Kate Hudson ended up getting it. But I was so convinced that my bags were packed for Greece. And then I didn’t get it. I was so devastated. And I’m not [normally] devastated over roles. I had done chemistry reads, I had done Zooms. And I didn’t get it. I cried and I cried all night long. And it went to Kate, who’s great.

I would certainly agree that Kate Hudson — who also got to reunite with Kathryn Hahn nearly two decades after How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days — did a wonderful job as Birdie Jay. Yet, I can also imagine an alternate reality in which the former Big Bang Theory cast member kills it as the self-absorbed fashion designer.

Edward Norton, Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahnn, Leslie Odom Jr. and Madelyn Cline in Glass Onion

Some Cast Members Had A Say In Their Characters’ Costume Design

Speaking of fashion, the wardrobe choices for the characters in Glass Onion are so exquisite and on-point, that it is surprising that costume designer Jenny Eagan did not get an Oscar nomination as well. Then again, if her designs had been recognized, she technically would have had to share the nomination with the actors.

An official behind-the-scenes featurette about Glass Onion ’s costume design released on YouTube reveals that the clothing choices were a collaborative effort between Eagan and some of the cast members. For instance, Daniel Craig based his look off Cary Grant in To Catch a Thief and Leslie Odom Jr. wanted Lionel’s wardrobe to subvert that of your typical movie scientist.

Stephen Sondheim, Angela Lansbury, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Natasha Lyonne on Zoom in Glass Onion

Stephen Sondheim Helped Get Angela Lansbury In Glass Onion

Another eye-popping element of Glass Onion is all the epic cameos — such as Hugh Grant as Blanc’s husband , Philip, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (a frequent collaborator of Johnson’s) as the voice of “The Hourly Dong,” and, of course, all of the detective’s famous friends. Those appearing as themselves in that group over a Zoom call include Johnson’s Poker Face star Natasha Lyonne, NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Stephen Sondheim, and Angela Lansbury.

The late theatre icon apparently had a hand in convincing the three-time Oscar-nominated Murder, She Wrote actor — who also passed away in 2022 — to show up in Glass Onion . Johnson recalled to the The New York Times mentioning to Sondheim that he wanted to get Lansbury, to which he said, “Oh, Angie — I’m friends with her. Tell her I’m doing it. She’ll do it.” That was that.

Leslie Odom Jr. with yacht captain in Glass Onion

The Captain Of Miles’ Yacht Was Played By The Real Yacht’s Captain

Also starring in Glass Onion as himself, apparently, is the captain who runs Miles Bron’s yacht and cheekily refers to the billionaire’s dock as a “Pisceshite.” This man is not a professional actor, but the actual captain of the yacht used in the movie, as Leslie Odom Jr . mentions during a cast reunion video also shared to the Still Watching Netflix channel on YouTube.

In fact, Johnson points out in that same video that the captain — who goes unnamed in the video and unmentioned in the film’s credits, too — “begrudgingly” took on the role, wanting no part of it despite being very familiar with was being asked of him. It is actually not unusual for non-actors to appear as themselves — such as most of the cast of Nomadland — and we are honored to include him on that list, regardless of his reluctance.

Edward Norton in Glass Onion

Exterior Footage Of Miles’ Estate Was Shot At A Real Greek Villa

Another member of the Glass Onion crew whom I was surprised did not receive any recognition from the Academy this year was production designer Rick Heinrichs, especially for the extremely luxurious appearance of Miles Bron’s (Edward Norton) beautiful Greek private Island. That was, however, until I learned that the estate was not a product of Heinrichs’ mind, but already existed before production.

In a featurette found on the Still Watching Netflix channel on YouTube about Glass Onion ’s production design , Johnson talks about how the first half of principal photography was done at a real estate in Greece called “Villa 20.” A quick look at the villa’s official website will show that Miles Bron’s pool, eclectic garden, and general exterior design are all part of the retreat. The titular glass structure that sits atop the estate was added digitally, however.

Mona Lisa burning in Glass Onion

A Scrapped Post-Credits Scene Almost Changed The Mona Lisa’s Fate

What makes the conclusion of Glass Onion so explosively entertaining — SPOILER ALERT — is the way Helen Brand (Janelle Monae) really hits Miles where it hurts by also fulfilling his dream of ensuring he will be remembered in the same breath as the Mona Lisa… by burning the real painting (which Bron had rented) to a crisp. This shocking sight could have been a little less devastating had Johnson stuck with his original plan.

In an interview for Empire’s Spoiler Special podcast (via ComicBook.com ), Johnson shared that the movie almost had a post-credits scene revealing that iconic art piece was actually still being held safely at the Louvre and that Bron had unwittingly been given a fake. However, the filmmaker says that, instead of “[pulling] a punch,” he prefers the idea that the Benoit Blanc Universe’s version of the Mona Lisa actually is no more.

As a fun, bonus behind-the-scenes fact, in a feature-length behind-the-scenes video on the Still Watching Netflix channel, Outer Banks cast member Madelyn Cline recalls hearing Johnson giggle behind the camera, which Craig would point out means that they had a good take. If only he could hear his fans giggle at Glass Onion , he would know just how much they thought he did another good job with this one.

On Location: ‘Glass Onion’ Brings Deceit and Murder to an Aman Villa on the Aegean Sea

By Charlie Hobbs

GLASS ONION A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc Dave Bautista as Duke Edward Norton as Miles...

Aren’t you just dying to stay at an Aman resort? In  Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery , which comes to Netflix on December 25, that question takes on very literal terms. The caper turns the luxury hospitality group’s famously peaceful (and fabulous) property in Greece—the Amanzoe—into a tech billionaire’s private island retreat to which the legendary detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) has been mysteriously invited. The surroundings are serene, so it’s all the more striking when heads roll.

Production designer Rick Heinrichs toured the Aman villa early on in the scouting process, but given it wasn’t on an island of its own, but on an inland stretch of archipelago not far from Port Heli, he continued looking for somewhere closer to the water. However, the dramatic modernist silhouette cut by Amanzoe—described  in our very own review  as a “series of set pieces”—stayed with him. We sat down with Heinrichs to talk about the beauty of Amanzoe; staying in the hotel that you’re shooting in; and working when it feels like a vacation.

Kathryn Hahn Madelyn Cline Edward Norton Leslie Odom Jr. and Kate Hudson

Kathryn Hahn, Madelyn Cline, Edward Norton, Leslie Odom, Jr., and Kate Hudson

How did you land on Amanzoe?

We actually spotted the Aman villa early on as something that could really work, but we didn’t know whether we would ever get permission to shoot there. The people who own such a thing don’t really need a motion picture company to come in there. Also, it wasn't an island, it was in the middle of the Peloponnesian peninsula, which would require us to depend on visual effects to make it look like one. But it turned out after, I don't know, six weeks or so of scouting, that nothing matched the Aman. That’s like life sometimes. You’re afraid you'll fall in love too early and there’s something better out there, but as it turns out, you were right in the first place.

The initial response was to the aesthetic: It had this modernist kind of take on classical Greek architecture. And that felt right for Miles. He's an inquisitive fellow, and he doesn't necessarily have his own aesthetic, but knows he can pay a lot of money for someone who does. And it just felt like a place of power, and had this great stairway that ran up to the top [with the villas in a hierarchy on the way up]. So there's different views from each villa, and they lead up to the [Glass Onion] with the best view on top. It’s very epic, almost like the Colosseum , to approach the villa—which lends itself to the idea that people are about to kill each other. Such scale. And then it offered a concept for building the atrium behind that worked really well as well—the interiors for that were constructed on a stage in Serbia.

The island of Spetses serves as the place from which the guests (here, Dave Bautista and Cline) head to Aman.

Beyond these stage shoots in Serbia, then, you were living and working at the Aman?

Yes. I mean, it was extraordinarily beautiful. Although it is mainland Greece—about four-and-a-half kilometers from the Ionian Sea—you do feel like you’re on an island. Unfortunately for me, I could only be there for a couple of weeks, and then I had to split back to Serbia. [Everyone else was] there for about four weeks of shooting, and then there were about seven weeks back in Belgrade for stage work. Anything set in New York or the Northeast was created in Serbia.

Including those colonial, sort of New England classic exteriors?

Oh, no! There was some outdoor stuff for which we shot a few things on location last fall in Connecticut and New York, and then everything inside was built in Serbia. I was thinking that being  Condé Nast Traveler , you'd be more interested in hearing about the Greek parts. [laughs]

We show Belgrade some love , too, but yes, Aman and Greece are top of mind for these purposes.

If you've ever been to Greece, it is really lovely—there are these olive trees everywhere in the Mediterranean. But [the summer of 2021, when we were shooting] was a very hot summer for a lot of people.

July 2024 Horoscope: Trips Will Be Dramatic, For Better or Worse

By Steph Koyfman

I was in Greece myself at this same time—in Athens and on Crete. And it was brutal, over 100 degrees every day and the sky cast brown with smoke from the fires.

And you can kind of see it on the actors here and there. You could tell they're getting a little stressed with the heat. I'm sure that was torture for them. But there were also some lovely days. And it is just so incredible to be there, looking out on the Mediterranean. In fact, I think it’s one of my favorite places in the world. Love that place. Unfortunately, my job doesn't keep me in the beautiful places. It's more about staying ahead of the company and making sure they've got sets to shoot when they catch up.

To clarify—the Aman does not enjoy quite as close proximity to the beach as it may appear in the film. Where is this beach on which you shot?

In the film, Miles’s villa is meant to be right on the water, just about. The Amanzoe villa does have a beach club, which they’ll drive you to, but it’s a little ways away. We shot here, with the yacht pulling up to the shore and all of that. One of the pools is down that way as well. It’s only about four-and-a-half kilometers away from the villa.

Glass Onion A Knives Out Mystery . Jessica Henwick as Peg Kate Hudson as Birdie and Janelle Mone as Andi. Cr. John...

Henwick, Hudson, and Monae poolside at Amanzoe

Did you get to enjoy any leisure time?

I did, in the week and a half to two weeks during the filming, and during a couple visits before that as well. I got to stay at the villa, which was so special, and pretend I was working while I was just having a really fabulous time hanging out. We got to travel around these different areas with olive trees and beaches and eat the fish and the horiatiki. There was a yacht that we rented during the filming that they take to the island in the film, so we briefly got to use that. It was not for vacation purposes but it’s always lovely being out on the water on a fabulous yacht.

We were also not too far from the island of Spetses, where we did shoot as well. When they all arrive in Greece and are waiting for the yacht, that’s Spetses. I did return there with my family. We rented a boat and went all the way around the island to these beautiful coves and beaches—and you can make the entire trip within a day. Lots of diving and snorkeling and fabulous food, and it's making me really miss it right now talking about it.

Fast 11 Can Finally Deliver Fast & Furious’ Dream Team-Up After Fast X Wasted It

The maxxxine premiere celebrates the x trilogy becoming a true summer blockbuster, bill skarsgård's the crow official rating has more intense warnings than brandon lee's 1994 version.

Detective Benoit Blanc is coming back to solve a new mystery in Knives Out 2 , and the movie’s setting can help it beat the widely-acclaimed first movie. The mystery genre has seen a variety of stories with different styles – from serious stories to others with touches of horror and even a couple of comedies – which has granted it a lot of success and popularity, and one of the best mystery movies in recent years is Knives Out . Written and directed by Rian Johnson , Knives Out was released in 2019 and was a critical and commercial success, with critics and viewers praising its story, acting, and direction.

When Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer), a wealthy novelist and patriarch of a dysfunctional family passes away under mysterious circumstances, detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) arrives to solve the case, which requires getting to know each and every one of the members of the Thrombey family – and they are not the easiest people you’ll meet. Everyone is a suspect, but with the help of Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas), Harlan’s nurse and close friend, Blanc eventually solves the puzzle and reveals who was truly responsible for Harlan’s death. Knives Out told a full story and brought the arcs of its characters (all of them) to a satisfying end, but its success was such that a sequel was greenlit.

Related: Why Daniel Craig Was Paid So Much For Knives Out Sequels

Simply titled Knives Out 2 , the movie has Rian Johnson back as director, producer (along with Ram Bergman), and writer, but it won’t be a direct sequel to Knives Out . Instead, Knives Out 2 is seen as a standalone movie with Benoit Blanc solving a new mystery, completely separate from the Thrombeys, and in a new setting, similar to Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot novel series. What Knives Out 2 is also doing differently is its release, as it will skip a theatrical release and instead will go straight to Netflix , and the streaming giant has shared the first (although very brief) look at the movie. In its 2022 movie preview trailer , there’s a shot of some of the new characters and Benoit Blanc boarding a boat, and that new setting is enough to help Knives Out 2 beat its predecessor.

Knives Out 2 was shot in Greece, and while plot details haven’t been revealed yet, the brief look in the aforementioned Netflix trailer shows Katherine Hahn, Jessica Henwick, Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom Jr., Madelyn Cline, and Dave Bautista before revealing Daniel Craig as well. The six new characters are boarding a boat in Greece, hinting at a big part of the story taking place in the boat, meaning it will be a more contained mystery than the one at the Thrombey house in the first movie, giving it a more Agatha Christie-like vibe. Even if many parts of the story take place on land, taking Blanc to the other side of the world, to a completely different setting from the somewhat isolated Thrombey mansion , is already of big help to Knives Out 2 , as it makes it unique and sets it apart from the first movie, and helps it avoid repeating the same aspects of its predecessor, which is a common trap for sequels and detective stories.

There’s still a lot to learn about Knives Out 2 , and while the Netflix trailer gave a very brief look at it and it doesn’t reveal much about the plot, it gives enough hints to know that it’s on the right path to be different from the first movie and it has the potential to even beat it. Knives Out 2 doesn’t have an official release date yet, so it’s just a matter of waiting for Netflix to share more information.

The Knives Out Sequel Trades a Gothic Revival Mansion for a Billionaire’s Mediterranean Palace

yacht in knives out

By Rachel Wallace

Glass Onion A Knives Out Mystery stars Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc and hits Netflix on December 23.

Director Rian Johnson’s 2019 whodunit hit  Knives Out took place inside a quintessentially Gothic Revival mansion. Filmed at multiple homes in Massachusetts and on soundstages, it evoked the creepy autumnal aesthetic of many classic murder mystery stories of the past, like  Clue .

The film’s sequel, which hit theaters briefly around Thanksgiving and will be available to stream on Netflix as of December 23, has a vastly different look. Filmed at Villa 20 at Amanzoe, a luxurious resort in Porto Heli, Greece—part of famous  Aman brand ’s high-end, high-design hotels—the film once again centers around eccentric detective Benoit Blanc (played by Daniel Craig ). This time, Blanc is invited to the home of billionaire Miles Bron ( Edward Norton ) as he hosts a murder mystery party for a group of A-list pals who call themselves “the disruptors.” Among the group are movie star Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson), politician Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn), and other such wacky characters.

Early in the film, the group pulls up to Bron’s private island aboard a 151-foot  yacht . (Named  Aquarius in real life, the boat is available to charter for $228,000 a week if you’re so inclined—and, fun fact, ship captain Ali Göksoy has a cameo in the film.) As they touch sand, Bron’s over-the-top home is revealed: a futuristic glass atrium plopped atop a sprawling Grecian villa with a grand outdoor staircase. It is his ode to his favorite bar, the Glass Onion, where he began the tech company that made him rich. This motif is also highly symbolic of his vapid personality. “It ties into Miles’s kind of fetishistic interest in himself and the metaphorical fact that when you look into Miles, there's really nothing there,” production designer Rick Heinrichs tells  AD .

Villa 20 “was kind of a modernist take on classic Greek architecture. It had a very lovely indoor-outdoor feel to it, very pavilion-like,” says production designer Rick Heinrichs. Here, director Rian Johnson talks to Janelle Monáe on set.

The exterior of the atrium was added in post-production using visual effects, and the team chose this particular vacation villa because it looked to Heinrichs like it could handle the addition of a big glass orb. “That wasn’t something that you could just do on any structure. It’s not that it felt like it was begging for a glass onion stuck on the top of it—but it sort of was, actually. I mean, it turns out that it felt very appropriate that all of these villas ascend to the top pavilion and on top of that was this lovely flower-like structure.” We wonder what the designers of the home— the late  AD100 architect  Edward Tuttle, who was instrumental in creating the design of Aman properties all over the world, and Marios Angelopoulos—would say to this.

“The point of the glass art was trying to do something that was really quintessentially beautiful, almost Brancusi-like in a certain way. That would also be something that the camera could lens through and distort characters,” says Heinrichs.

The interiors at the villa were used to film guest rooms, but the main living area of Miles’s house was built on a soundstage in Serbia. For this set, Heinrichs and the prop department had to create an array of fine art, including a replica of the Mona Lisa which came courtesy of scenic artist James Gemmill. This job was made all the more difficult when a fire engulfed their prop house in Belgrade, causing a scramble to replace the many resin-glass sculptures that had been made for the film. “We immediately had to switch over to real glasswork and redid a lot of the things,” Heinrichs says. “It’s a movie called the Glass Onion, so we knew we couldn't disappoint in making things look like glass.”

Best boat knife – 11 options tried and tested

  • June 12, 2024

The marine group Tech Editor, Fox Morgan gives their essential buyers guide advise on the best boat knife for a variety of uses around your boat

yacht in knives out

The best boat knife will be a life saver and a constant sailing companion for years to come. Make sure you find the right one that suits you and what you want from it.

A blade that can slice through lifejacket harness webbing may not be suitable for severing a 12mm mooring warp that has become stuck around a bollard as you descend a lock.

A knife that can saw through a polypropylene fishing line wrapped around your prop may fare less well faced with a Dyneema halyard jammed in a riding turn.

Almost every cruising yacht has a knife or three rattling around in a chart table drawer. Some skippers have a knife in a sheath attached to a point in the companionway or somewhere else easily reached. Many sailors also carry a knife in the pocket of their foul-weather gear. We sailors really do need a multitude of knives.

The decision making process behind each one though can take time and we don’t always get the chance to test a knife in a shop as they’re locked away for safety.

As an offshore sailor I have a boat load of knives that I have tested and plenty more that have been loaned to me on friends and customers boats in moments of urgent need. Here’s my top choices  of best boat knife for a variety or purposes.

Editors choices: At a glance

Best boat knife.

Gerber EZ-Out Rescue knife

Best boat knife in test

Reasons to Buy: Light weight, easy to open, very powerful cutting blade

Reasons to Avoid: some may find the blade a little too aggressive

This is a single blade with a rounded tip and no other tools or features. Although the blade remains safely sprung closed, it is easy and safe to open one-handed.

The 7.8cm-long blade is serrated, but not so heavily that the knife grips a rope when it should be cutting it. We found the EZ-Out Rescue the most effective cutter in our test. Whether faced with the tough Dyneema halyard, the webbing or the awkward polypropylene line, this blade scythed through in a few seconds at most.

The blade locks well and is easily returned via a push point on the rear. At 73.7g, the EZ-Out Rescue is very light and there is a lanyard point as well as a pocket clip.

That bright yellow, reinforced thermoplastic handle is mottled for grip and Gerber has boosted this with a raised black rubber lip on each side. The overall unit is relatively thin but perfectly comfortable to use.

This knife comes with a lifetime warranty.

Victorinox Skipper Pro Swiss Army Pocket Knife

Best boat knife with onboard tools

read the review :  Best sailing knife tested- Victorinox Skipper Pro

Reasons to Buy: every tool is useful to a skipper, high build quality, excellent marlin spike

Reasons to Avoid: heavier than a basic knife, the pliers are small

The best boat knife is the one you always carry with you. This Victorinox has been by my side for years and got me out of some scrapes as well as helped me to fix a few things on the go.

The built in additional tools make this more than just a knife. So yes, it’s a bit heavier and fatter than a knife that s solely a knife.

Probably the best knife I ever used on a boat.

yacht in knives out

Wichard offshore knife

Reasons to Buy: glow in the dark options make finding in the dark easy, solid tools, well built

Reasons to Avoid: the knife can be stiff to pull out so requires two hands to open

I love this knife. It given to me as a gift over 10 years ago and it’s still sharp and still a reliable tool that I keep by my chart table.

It features a marline spike, bottle opener and shackle key as additional tools to the 7.5cm-long blade. The body glows in the dark which can make it easy to find or a fun way to have a potentially lethal glow stick party if you’re an old school raver like me with a black light. Anyway I digress.

The chunky plastic handle is utilitarian rather than showy It’s clearly tough, but unlike some knives on test, has no sharp or jutting edges that might mark chart or saloon tables. There is a lanyard hole for this 132g model. I made my own lanyard out of a bit of cord.

It’s quite a tight opening which can mean gripping it to open with cold hands is a bit difficult. To close the knife you have to half pull out one of the other tools.

The knife is pretty good, though as it’s serrated it is trickier to sharpen.

Wichard have updated this knife to integrate the shackle key with marlin spike which lightens the tool by having a bit less metal on it.

Gerber Dual Force

Best for powering through tough jobs

Specifications:  Make: Gerber | Model: Dual Force | Weight: 310g | Blade length: 74mm | Closed length: 115mm | Locking blade: Yes | Features: 12 | Singlehanded use: Yes

Reasons to Buy : Powerful adjustable hex pliers | Useful array of tools | Good quality build Reasons to Avoid : A little heavy | The pliers aren’t designed for dainty tasks

This multitool has four swivel out tools: a sharp smooth blade, a wood saw blade, a file and a centre drive screw driver. The main tool is the multi grip powerful pliers/jaws that can be butterfly revealed.

These are the biggest and most powerful pliers available in a multitool that we know of.

The centre drive screwdriver takes standard bits and with it’s central position, you can really get some force behind it. Obviously you wouldn’t want to be doing a massive job with this as you’re hand would become sore after a while but the balance and position of tools offered make this a really useful bit of kit to have in your inventory.

It comes with a decent belt holster too.

yacht in knives out

Gerber River shorty

Best boat knife for emergency use

Reasons to Buy: Light weight, safety tip, really strong handle

Reasons to Avoid: may be a little short for some tasks

The Gerber River shorty has a blunted tip and is a fixed blade with a sheath ptotector. This knife is ideally suited for being a reach for in case of emergency kind of boat knife.

You’d strap this to the binnacle leg or attach it to a safe point within reach of the helm or alternatively keep it in a grab bag or emergency pack.

The handle is grippy with extra lips to gain purchase when sawing away at something urgently.

The holes in the handle lend themselves perfectly for attaching a lanyard to avoid this being lost over the side.

A big thumbs up from me on this knife as it’s visible and easy to use with or without gloves on.

yacht in knives out

Gerber Strap Cutter

Best boat knife for webbing

Reasons to Buy: Light weight, very easy to grip, has built in glass hammer

Reasons to Avoid: very specific use, hard to sharpen

The Gerber strap cutter and glass breaker is a neat but powerful tool that can get you out of trouble fast.

Ideally worn about the person, either stowed on or near your lifejacket or for use in a liferaft or other emergency grab bag.

It has a really sturdy grip and fits well in the hand, whether you have gloves on or not.

A great bit of kit, especially if you find yourself needing to cut webbing in a hurry, or smash glass for any reason.

yacht in knives out

Spinlock S-Cutter

Reasons to Buy: Light weight, easy to use, fits in a pocket easily

Reasons to Avoid: might be hard to grip with very cold hands

This is a tool designed specifically for slashing through a safety tether in a hurry, if the tether is under load and can’t be released. Spinlock says that ‘by providing a means of disconnection, anyone wearing the Cutter satisfies ISAF and ORC recommendations’.

If that sounds unlikely, remember cases where the victim has been held under a capsized boat by a tether, or a tethered MOB has drowned while being dragged through the water. The S-Cutter comes in a protective sheath and a pouch and is small and light enough to keep in a foul-weather jacket pocket. There is also a lanyard hole if you want to keep it on your lifejacket full-time.

The tool features serrated edges for added grip in the wet. On test, we found the tool uncomfortable and difficult to get a useful purchase on. The device performed poorly in our cutting test, needing a significant amount of concerted sawing before it severed our safety tether webbing.

yacht in knives out

Gill Harness Rescue Tool

Reasons to Buy: Light weight, comes with a lanyard, fits in a pocket easily

Reasons to Avoid: the cutting jaw might be a bit on the small side

This is another device designed for cutting safety tether webbing in a hurry. The blade lies on the inner corner of a U-shape in the design, which is too narrow to accommodate all but tether webbing or thin dinghy line.

The Gill model incorporates a shackle key which gives it a slightly more substantial body and makes it more comfortable to use than the Spinlock. The design includes a finger hole opposite the U-shaped blade so that cold, wet hands do not have trouble gripping the implement.

There is a lanyard hole and the tool is small enough, at 90mm long, to keep in a pocket or attached to your lifejacket belt. Gill has coated the stainless steel in titanium which is said to impede corrosion.

On test, the Harness Rescue Tool needed just one stroke to sever our tether, whether the webbing was stretched taut or held in a loop in one hand. On our guardrail lashing, it was equally effective, but too narrow for the ropes.

Gill Personal Rescue Knife

Reasons to Buy: Light weight, excellent knife blade, slips easily into a secure pocket

Reasons to Avoid: the blade folding clip can be fiddly with cold hands

This boat knife is a single folding blade that is easily opened with one hand due to a thumb stud on both sides. The jet black aluminium handle has an integrated tether-cutter, but curiously, given the success of the Gill Harness Rescue Tool, we found this to have very poor cutting power on our test tether.

The 7.8cm-long knife blade itself – titanium- coated stainless steel for corrosion resistance – is rounded at its tip and has an unusual, almost childlike, bobbly serration.

In terms of cutting power, however, it was far from childlike, and proved the second most effective on test, slicing through all of our materials in a few strokes at most, equal to the Wichard.

The blade locks out securely and is folded back only once you’ve pushed in a clip within the blade slot, an idea we’ve not seen on other models but which works well ergonomically.

The Personal Rescue Knife is fitted with a clip to attach to a lifejacket or belt, and has small lanyard holes within the clip.

Gerber Obsidian Folding Knife

Reasons to Buy: great locking mechanism, easy to open one handed, fits in a pocket easily

Reasons to Avoid: small blade requires more effort to cut

The biggest plus point of this model is its locking mechanism. A thumb-operated clip locks the blade shut or open, while an additional thumb-button is pressed before it can be closed.

It sounds picky, but it’s not and with the thumb studs, the blade can be opened one-handed. Once halfway open, our test model could be flicked open all the way.

This 7.8cm-long blade has a 2.8cm-long serration at its base. The rest of the blade is smooth. We found the serration was not long enough to saw effectively at our lines and was prone to sticking.

On the guardrail lashing, the Obsidian performed well, but overall, we found it required more strokes than the other knives on test to cut through our thicker lines and tether webbing.

There are four other tools kept in the back of the handle – two screwdrivers, a bottle opener and a small file. A lanyard and pocket clip should ensure this knife does not go overboard.

The glass-filled nylon handle is smart and very comfortable to use but felt quite slippery compared to other models on test. It was also relatively heavy, at 130g.

The Obsidian comes with a lifetime warranty.

Leatherman Fuse

Reasons to Buy: well built, excellent pliers, 25 year warranty

Reasons to Avoid: knife fells like secondary tool onboard, heavier than a plain knife, two handed opening

Although the Leatherman Wave has become popular with sailors for its wide and well-judged array of tools, for price reasons we chose a relatively conservative multi-tool, the Leatherman Fuse, with only 12 features additional to the knife.

It has a lanyard that needs to be deployed from within the body, but the 170g weight of the Fuse means you would not want it dangling too loosely around your person – better in a pocket.

The 6.8cm locking blade was extremely effective and easily deployed from within the Fuse’s body, not from the outside as on some other Leatherman models.

It sliced through all our ropes and the webbing without any problem. With pliers, wire stripper, three screwdrivers, scissors and a bottler opener, this multi-tool would cater for a lot of jobs on board with aplomb.

With none of the tools on the outside, you need both hands to use the Fuse, perhaps not ideal at sea, but the design was straightforward and all the tools easily accessible. The stainless steel body looks slippery but the Fuse fits nicely in the palm and even when wet offers solid grip. It comes with a 25-year warranty.

Nearly three years after Knives Out was originally released in late 2019, we’re finally going to get a sequel: Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery . That means we’re due for more quippy dialogue, zany characters, and another thrilling mystery very soon, but not soon enough.

The complete plot of Glass Onion is not yet clear, but we know that Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc will once again put his detective skills to the test–this time on the picturesque Greek island of Spetses. If Glass Onion is anything like its predecessor, the audience is in for a real treat.

Here’s what we know about the film so far, from its star-studded cast to its potential release date.

When is Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery being released?

The sequel hits Netflix globally on Friday, Dec. 23, just in time for the holidays. It will also arrive in select theaters at a yet-undisclosed date.

Who’s in the cast?

What is it about.

Glass Onion focuses on what happens when a tech billionaire Miles Bron (Norton) invites his closest friends to a remote island in Greece. Of course, it isn't the relaxing getaway it sounds like; someone winds up dead, and it's up to Detective Blanc to solve the case. “If Knives Out was about the murderous ties of flesh and blood, Glass Onion makes a good case for being just as wary of one’s closest friends,” according to Tudum .

The mystery will allow viewers to get to know Craig's Blanc a little better. “We’re very much meeting these people and getting into this world through his eyes,” Johnson told Tudum. Like the OG Knives Out, Glass Onion was also inspired by the director's love for Agatha Christie, but it will feel entirely different thanks to its specific influences from “tropical murder mystery” films like 1982’s Evil Under the Sun and 1973’s The Last of Sheila .

The inspirations from the latter are pretty obvious. “First of all, it's structured around a group of friends, or frenemies, who all have a power dynamic with one of their successful friends,” Johnson explained. “It begins with him sending an invitation for them to come and play this murder mystery game at this exotic locale. In The Last of Sheila , it's on his yacht, and everything ends up going horribly wrong. That is essentially how Glass Onion begins.”

Is there a trailer?

In Netflix’s 2022 Movie Preview, a short clip from Glass Onion could be seen towards the end of the video. (Skip to timestamp 2:35.) It shows Blanc and some characters boarding a yacht in Greece. Speculation has led many to believe that Johnson will release the trailer at a film festival this fall, according to Variety . No promises, though.

Netflix further teased the film on Aug. 22, sharing first-look photos of the cast together, and Johnson behind the scenes with Janelle Monáe.

And finally, an official trailer arrived on Sept. 8.

Netflix also shared a new clip during Tudum 2022. “The mystery begins when a group of friends get invitations in the form of an intricate puzzle box, but what starts out as a game ends as something more nefarious,” Johnson says introducing the footage.

The teaser shows that said puzzle box in action. Recipients solve a variety of riddles to unveil an over-the-top invite to a long weekend on their friend Miles' private island. There, they'll solve more mysteries—including one about Miles' murder.

Another official trailer arrived on Nov. 7 too.

Where can I watch the original Knives Out ?

For those wishing to catch up on the first film before the sequel arrives, Knives Out (starring Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, Christopher Plummer, and more) is currently available to rent on Prime Video.

Whatever the storyline and release date of Glass Onion may be, the A-list cast and the stunning filming location are going to make for a juicy whodunit. Who knows, it might even outdo the first, though the presence of Chris Evans (and his famous cable knit sweater) will be deeply missed.

Best sailing knifes: 23 options tested

We put knives from Gill, Opinel, Captain Currey, Force 4, Gerber and more to the test….

Choosing a sailing knife

No matter what type of sailing you take part in, some bits of kit are vital for sailors – a sailing knife can save your life. But picking the right one from the huge range on offer can be daunting.

Our writer Duncan Kent got hold of a range of knives to see which is best for a sailor’s needs.

The UK Government’s Knife Law is outlined on its web page here .

The maximum penalty for an adult carrying a knife or weapon illegally is either 4 years in prison, an unlimited fine or both. The UK Government says you’ll get a prison sentence if you’re convicted of carrying a knife or weapon illegally more than once.

It is illegal to publicly carry any knife with a blade that can be locked open – regardless of blade length.

The government strongly advise you speak with your local police force to confirm your knife is not only legal, but also that you have ‘good reason’ to be carrying it in public – ie. back and forth to your boat.

Examples given include:

  • taking knives you use at work to and from your workplace.
  • taking knives to a gallery or museum to be exhibited.
  • the knife is going to be used for theatre, film, television, historical re-enactment or religious purposes.

Most likely taking a knife to your boat would be covered in the first condition, but that has not always been proved correct and it will depend entirely on the way the law is interpreted by whoever stops you. If you are charged it will be down to the court to decide whether you had good reason to be carrying that knife at that time.

Best folding knives for sailing.

yacht in knives out

GERBER EZ OUT, approx £34.95

Verdict: Light and very sharp, but a thumb stud would make it genuinely an ‘EZ Out’ device for one handed operation. A rubberised handle would also improve its grip.

Value: 5/10  Performance: 8/10

yacht in knives out

GILL MARINE TOOL, approx £19.95

Verdict: Not the quickest cutter, but a nice looking tool and good value as well – especially considering the smart canvas belt pouch supplied.

Value: 8/10 Performance: 4/10

Currey Bosun knife

CAPTAIN CURREY LOCKSPIKE ‘BOSUN’, approx £28.95

Verdict: Not quite as good at rope or webbing cutting as a serrated blade, but still pretty effective and useful to have the locking spike as well.

Value: 5/10 Performance: 7/10

CAPTAIN CURREY LOCKSPIKE ‘CAPTAIN’,  approx £34.95

Verdict: Chunkier and heavier than the Bosun, but the separate shackle key is more user-friendly. It looks a bit smarter too, being polished stainless steel rather than just matt finish.

Value: 6/10 Performance:  6/10

FORCE 4 POCKET SERRATED , approx £12.95 [Best Budget Buy]

Verdict: Surprisingly sharp and effective for such a small knife and economically priced.

Value: 9/10

Performance: 7/10

GERBER Bear Grylls SCOUT , approx £24.99

Verdict: We liked this knife – it’s well balanced and very sharp, but not too big.

Value: 8/10

Performance: 9/10

GERBER MINI PARAFRAME , approx £9.98

Verdict: Cheap and cheerful little pocket knife for odd little jobs, but clearly not up to the task of serious rope cutting.

Value: 6/10 Performance: 4/10

GERBER ULTRALIGHT , approx £17.99

Verdict: A bit too small for serious rope cutting, but handy to have in your pocket for a number of other jobs.

Value: 3/10 Performance: 5/10

GILL PERSONAL RESCUE , approx £24.95

Verdict: Great to have a serrated blade and a webbing cutter in one and the one-handed opening is a boon for deck work.

Value: 7/10 Performance: 7/10

IBBERSON HEAVY DUTY , approx £28.75

Verdict: A fairly standard looking sailor’s knife, but from top quality stainless steel and is extremely sharp and effective at cutting all types of rope and webbing.

Value: 7/10 Performance: 8/10

INOX FLOATING , approx £12.65

Verdict: Surprisingly good cutter and handy if you particularly need a floating knife for the liferaft, say. Not very pretty, though, and a blade lock and lanyard would improve it considerably.

Value: 8/10 Performance: 8/10

OPINEL CARBON , approx £7.13

Verdict: Not really a yachtsman’s knife, but pretty sharp so would be okay as a GP knife for above and below decks.

SPYDERCO ATLANTIC SALT , approx £85.72

Verdict: A very good cutter, nice and light and easily gripped. Difficult to justify the cost though.

Value: 3/10 Performance: 9/10

WHITBY SAILORS LOCK , approx £11.53

Verdict: Okay for general use, but the 50/50 plain/serrated blade isn’t ideal for serious rope cutting.

Value: 5/10 Performance: 6/10

WICHARD BLADE AND SHACKLE , approx £21.50

Verdict: A pretty basic knife, but with above average cutting performance and the ability to see it easily in the dark is a bonus.

Value: 5/10 Performance: 8/10

Verdict: Looks ideal for clearing prop debris like netting and rope.

Value: 5/10 Performance: 5/10

FORCE 4 RACE RESCUE , approx £37.95 [Top Buy/Recommended]

Verdict: We like this knife for its simplicity, excellent hand grip, thick blade and positive sheath locking action. It was pretty damn sharp too!

Value: 7/10 Performance: 9/10

GERBER BG ULTIMATE , approx £70.00

Verdict: Not cheap but a lot of knife for the money and a serious rope cutting device in an emergency.

GERBER RIVER SHORTY , approx £49.99

Verdict: Good, strong general purpose knife with excellent cutting performance, although just a little short for prop clearing. Good for opening oysters though.

Value: 6/10 Performance: 9/10

Verdict: Nice to hold, well balanced and a stout blade, but not particularly sharp.

Value: 6/10  Performance: 4/10

MYERCHIN OFFSHORE/PRO , approx £76.74/£78.39 [Top Performer]

Verdict: Costly, but worth it for the quality of steel, handle and leather pouch. The Pro version was the top performer over all the tests.

Verdict: A good all-round sailor’s/diver’s knife ideal for cutting rope from a prop.

10 Best Sailing Knives Available in the Market

A sailing knife on board can help you cut ropes, undo knots, and much more. When the tool serves many purposes, choosing a reliable one is a good idea. This post helps you with the same by listing the ten best sailing knife options you can buy. Not only that, the guide below helps you understand how to compare these knives.

Table of Contents

What should you know when buying a sailing knife?

Once you know the parameters to compare these sailing knives, choosing among them becomes easy.

Knife type:

A sailing knife can be a fixed, foldable, or multipurpose tool. The option you choose is dependent on personal preference. The sturdiness of the fixed knife makes it easy to cut ropes. The versatility of the multipurpose tool is what helps it stand out. In case you need an option between the two, choose a foldable blade knife with a long blade.

Blade material:

Ultimately it is the blade that will cut ropes and untangle knots. The shape and material of the blade matter a lot. Serrated blades are preferred over plain ones. The material should be stainless steel, carbon steel, or other metal alloys. Simultaneously ensure that the blade material isn’t susceptible to rust.

Blade length:

To cut rope easily, ensure the blade is at least 2.5 inches long. A longer blade is undoubtedly beneficial, but it also makes the knife challenging to store. Keep that in mind and choose the knife accordingly.

Go with a knife that offers a slip-resistant or easy-to-hold handle. By applying minimum pressure, you can cut the rope to untangle knots.

The knife should either come with a sheath or be foldable and come with a lanyard or carrying loop. It must be easy to store so that you can keep it with yourself at all times.

While comparing the sailing knives below, judge them on these parameters to pick the best.

Evidence in Swan Boat Club tragedy to be laid out in court

yacht in knives out

The driver accused of killing two young siblings in Newport’s Swan Boat Club tragedy will be back in Monroe's district court on Thursday for a hearing that will decide whether the case against her will go to trial.

Marshella Chidester, 66, is accused of driving while intoxicated when police say she plowed an SUV through the wall of the boat club during a 3-year-old's circus-themed birthday party on April 20, killing two young siblings and injuring about a dozen others. Chidester's attorney, however, has said it was a medical issue, not alcohol, that caused the crash.

She was charged with eight crimes related to the crash, including two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, causing death.

Chidester’s blood alcohol content the day of the crash will likely be revealed during Thursday’s hearing in Monroe's 1st District Court that’s called preliminary examination, among other evidence from the prosecution.

The scene of the tragedy has been described as chaotic and horrific: A loud crash that could be heard several houses down the gravel road, then screams of children, parents, grandparents. Adults rushed to take toddlers to safety. Victims thought a bomb had went off. Debris scattered the floor, and food from the birthday party was strewn everywhere, including the ceiling.

Monroe County Prosecutor Jeffery Yorkey previously said in court that a preliminary alcohol breath test on Chidester was "significantly over the legal limit" but he was not specific. He had pointed to a history of "severe substance abuse" allegedly corroborated by friends and family of Chidester and that Chidester admitted to drinking that day.

But Bill Colovos, Chidester's lawyer, said his client suffers from neuropathy, causing "epileptic type seizures" in her legs. Chidester only had only one glass of wine that day but "blacked out" from a seizure and is "very remorseful," he told previously told Free Press.

She started having the seizures in November and a doctor told her to stop driving for two months, but did not restrict her further, Colovos has said.

Among the victims include Zayn Phillips, 4, and Alanah Phillips, 8, who were killed. Their mother Mariah Dodds was injured but survived along with her 11-year-old son, who suffered broken legs, ribs, and a skull fracture. Dodds suffered broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

Also among the victims was Diane Medina, a friend of Chidester's from the boat club, who suffered three breaks in her pelvis, a broken nose, internal bleeding and a head injury.

Medina, 57, of Carleton told the Free Press in April she couldn't wait to see her friend Chidester in court.

On Thursday, she’ll get her chance.

Swan Boat Club driver bound over for trial after having 0.18 blood alcohol result

yacht in knives out

Monroe — A woman who drove her car into a boat club in April, killing two children and injuring 11 others, was bound over for trial Thursday after testimony in her preliminary exam showed she had a blood alcohol level that was twice the legal limit and had told police that she shouldn't be driving.

One of the spectators in the crowded courtroom yelled "yes" when 1st District Court Judge Michael Brown found that prosecutors had provided enough evidence to bind over all charges against Marshella Chidester, 66, of Newport.

Chidester is charged with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of operating under the influence of alcohol causing death and four counts of operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious injury. She faces up to life in prison if convicted.

The decision came Thursday afternoon after Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy Steven Schmidt testified earlier that Chidester had a blood alcohol level of 0.18. The legal limit in Michigan is 0.08, and the state super drunk definition is 0.17.

Ken Laurain, assistant prosecuting attorney for Monroe County, declined to discuss the judge's decision, while Chidester's attorney, Bill Colovos, said he looked forward to proving her innocence. He said during an earlier arraignment that Chidester drank a single glass of wine and her impairment was caused by seizures.

"When the medical records come out, you'll see about the seizures," Colovos told The Detroit News on Thursday.

After the crash at Swan Boat Club on April 20, Chidester smelled like alcohol and had trouble maintaining her balance, testified Sgt. Michael Bomia, who was the first deputy on the scene. In a field sobriety test, she recited the alphabet correctly but had trouble focusing on the deputy's finger and counting backward from 100, Bomia said.

Chidester, responding to questions from another deputy at the crash site, said she shouldn’t be driving and rated her drunkenness at 7 on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being highly drunk. She said she had been drinking wine 30 minutes before the crash and was on medication for seizures.

"I wouldn't want to drive," she told another deputy, Schmidt, after he asked whether she should be driving.

Chidester told Schmidt that she didn’t remember what happened, according to Thursday's testimony.

“I pulled into the parking lot,” she told Schmidt, according to a video played during the hearing. “I thought I was driving up to the boat club. Evidently, I was driving right into the building.”

“You don’t remember what happened?” Schmidt asked.

“You know what, I have these seizures,” she said.

The crash killed 8-year-old Alanah Phillips and her 4-year-old brother, Zayn Phillips. Their mother, Mariah Dodds, and another sibling were among the injured.

Defense lawyer challenges video

Chidester is a former commodore at the boat club, which is located off Swan Creek near Lake Erie. It’s a membership-based organization that hosts holiday parties and other events, and provides docking space for members who own boats, according to its website.

Colovos argued against showing the video of Chidester, saying prosecutors hadn't directly proved she had been read her Miranda rights. The prosecutor indicated the rights had been given, but Colovos said the prosecution needed to produce the officer who read Chidester her rights before the video of her interview could be introduced. The judge let the video be shown after he was assured the Miranda rights had been administered.

During the Thursday hearing, another video showed Chidester getting into her car moments before the crash. The video, taken from a camera across the street from her home, shows her walking unsteadily from her home to her car.

Chidester quickly backed out of her driveway into the road and, while driving backward, swerved onto the shoulder of the road, according to the video. The camera momentarily loses view of her and then showed her driving frontward in the opposite direction toward the boat club, which is 500 feet from her home.

A neighbor had told police earlier that someone had rammed his car, pushing it into a fence, in the moments before the boat club crash. The video showed the collision, and a deputy testified Thursday that Chidester's car was involved in two crashes, the club and the car.

Dead children's mom testifies

Among the injured people who testified during the hearing Thursday was Dodds, the mother of the two children who died.

Dodds and her children were at a party at the boat club for the 3-year-old child of Dodds' friend, according to a Detroit law firm representing Dodds' family in a lawsuit against Chidester and the tavern where she reportedly was before the crash.

She said the only thing she remembered about the crash were the voices of several relatives. The relatives, who weren’t the two children who died, sounded far away, she said.

Her last memory before the accident was a happy one, Dodds said. She walking back to the table where her children were sitting and eating.

“I was laughing,” Dodds said.

Her next memory was waking up in a hospital room, where she remained for four days, she testified. One of her three children who survived was also hospitalized, she said.

Two months after the wreck, her son still needs more rehabilitation before he regains the ability to walk, Dodds said.

Videos show people screaming

During the hearing at 1st District Court in Monroe, Chidester’s attorney objected to the showing of several of the videos, arguing they weren't relevant. He said he had provided the county prosecutor's office with medical records about her condition.

Other videos played during the hearing showed the aftermath of crash, with people screaming while others scooped up children and fled the scene.

One video from the boat club showed a car traveling at a high rate of speed through the club's parking lot and then veering into the building at around 3 p.m. on April 20.

Another video showed people trying to clear debris and get to people trapped by the car against a wall. A child could be seen being pulled from behind a counter near where the car crashed.

"It was a chaotic scene," Bomia said.

In another scene, people could be seen pulling a woman from the floor, bloodied by the crash.

In a body-worn camera from a Monroe County sheriff's deputy, Chidester is shown sitting in a chair as the deputy arrives at the chaotic scene. Chidester was taken outside to the police car, where she answered questions.

Colovos said earlier that Chidester had blacked out from a seizure behind the wheel and didn’t remember the crash or anything leading up to it.

More: Aunt of siblings killed at party: 'We were supposed to be planning a birthday ... not a funeral'

Chidester suffers from neuropathy and has epileptic-like seizures in her legs, Colovos said earlier. She was hospitalized last fall after being treated for epileptic-type seizures in her legs, he said.

Two Metro Detroit medical experts told The Detroit News in May that the medical condition attributed to the woman may affect one's ability to drive, but the condition is not known for causing a loss of consciousness.

More: Medical experts weigh in on conditions attributed to driver in Swan Boat Club crash

Prosecutors said during an arraignment in April that Chidester drunkenly crashed her SUV into a boat club that was hosting a child's birthday party. They said she has had substance abuse issues. But Colovos said Chidester had no traffic tickets or police record.

Bethenny Frankel’s ex-fiancé Paul Bernon has seemingly moved on.

The businessman was spotted making out with Aurora Culpo, Olivia Culpo’s older sister, at The ‘Quin House in Boston recently, according to a Deuxmoi source .

Additionally, in photos obtained by the gossip site, the potential new couple could be seen sitting next to each other on a boat cruise along the coast of Rhode Island, where Olivia will be celebrating her wedding to San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey.

Another snapshot showed the pair chatting in a parking lot. While Bernon looked serious with his arms crossed, Aurora, 35, smiled at him as they spoke.

The two were dressed smartly for the outing with Bernon, 45, sporting navy shorts and a baby blue polo and the content creator, 35, rocking a floral print baby doll sundress.

Reps for Bernon, Aurora and Frankel did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

The reported makeout session comes three months after Frankel, 53, and Bernon ended their engagement .

Although neither has confirmed the breakup, a source told Us Weekly, “It just wasn’t going to work. They are so different — he’s an under-the-radar kind of guy.”

Frankel also seemingly alluded to it when she took to Instagram to celebrate her “new summer, new home [and] new chapter” last month.

Filipino soldiers who faced off against Chinese coast guards armed with axes and knives given medals

  • Filipino soldiers involved in a clash last week with Chinese coast guard have been awarded medals.
  • Their vessels came under attack last week while delivering supplies in the disputed South China Sea.
  • The award ceremony is unlikely to ease tensions with China in the contested region.

Insider Today

Filipino soldiers who reportedly used their bare hands to fight off Chinese coast guards armed with swords and knives were awarded medals by the Philippines for de-escalating tensions, according to the Manila Bulletin .

Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. bestowed the Order of Lapu-Lapu on 80 soldiers on Sunday, per the outlet.

"I salute the 80 officers and troops who sailed the waters and exercised the greatest restraint amidst intense provocation," he said, adding: "You demonstrated to the world that the Filipino spirit is one that is brave, determined, and yet is compassionate."

Seventy-nine Filipino soldiers received the Kamagi Medal, per the outlet, with Seaman First Class Underwater Operator Jeffrey Facundo receiving the Kampilan Medal, an award given to individuals who are "seriously" wounded or injured.

On June 17, Chinese coast guard personnel rammed their boats into Filipino vessels and boarded and attacked them, according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines, which shared photos of the confrontation.

Two days after the incident, the Philippines also released a video that it said showed China Coast Guard personnel wielding an ax, flinging rocks, and slashing boats with "bladed and pointed weapons."

General Romeo Brawner, the Philippines' top military commander, criticized China for what he described as "reckless and aggressive" behavior, which he said happened while the Philippines navy and coast guard were delivering supplies to soldiers in the disputed South China Sea.

Related stories

He said that the clash resulted in injuries and one soldier losing a thumb.

Brawner described the incident as "a blatant violation of international maritime law, Philippine sovereignty, and sovereign rights."

But China has defended the move, with China's foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian saying it acted in accordance with the law.

The incident is being seen as the latest aggressive act from Beijing in the South China Sea, with others involving lasers , water cannons , maritime militias , and even the alleged poisoning of fishing waters.

However, this latest move by the Philippines is unlikely to calm tensions in the contested waters, and is likely to be seen as a further provocation by China.

"As we award these medals, we remember that on June 17th, we made a conscious and deliberate choice to remain in the path of peace," Marcos Jr. said when bestowing the medals, per the Manila Bulletin.

China has claimed sovereignty over the South China Sea for decades, a claim that was roundly rejected in the Hague in 2016.

On June 15, China enacted a law allowing its Coast Guard to detain foreign vessels and people in waters under China's jurisdiction for up to 60 days, according to a paper by the US Indo-Pacific Command.

Sari Arho Havrén, an associate fellow at the Royal United Services Institute specializing in China's foreign relations, told BI last week that China wants to change the status quo in the waters "by force" and aims to "exhaust" neighboring countries into giving in to its territorial claims.

A F50 catamarans sails by the Statue of Liberty.

At 11:30 a.m. Sunday morning, with New York City under a heat advisory, a gaggle of sailing enthusiasts, dressed in polo shirts and summer dresses, boarded a ferry for Governors Island to watch towering F50 catamarans race along the skyline of Lower Manhattan and in front of the Statue of Liberty.

It was the second day and the finals of the New York Sail Grand Prix, part of SailGP, the growing international sailing competition in which teams, grouped by country, compete in $5 million boats that race up to 60 miles per hour.

The competition was founded in 2018 by Larry Ellison, the tech billionaire, and Russell Coutts, a five-time America’s Cup winner, to build a mainstream sailing league. Unlike America’s Cup, which occurs roughly every four years, SailGP has events around the globe throughout the year, allowing audiences to follow along.

“It’s this high-adrenaline, high-speed sort of racing product right in front of you,” Mr. Coutts said.

A crowd of spectators sit together on a bunch of stands. Three people hold up white letters that say USA.

Organizers and fans are comparing the competition to Formula 1 racing on the water, which also has billionaire and celebrity backers and flashy backdrops including St. Tropez and Dubai. Now in its fourth season, the number of SailGP teams and events has doubled. The races, filled with Olympic sailors and state-of-the-art catamarans, are broadcast throughout the world and attract millions of viewers, according to organizers.

The sold-out race was held at the tip of Manhattan. Thousands of spectators gathered to watch the race by boat or from Governors Island, a 172-acre island in New York Harbor. (Tickets started at $85 for the grandstand.)

A private tent on a paved area by the water was reserved for team owners and invited ticket holders. There was sushi and dumplings and tea service catered by the Plaza.

The teams were spread around the lounge, marked by flags. Lindsey Vonn, the Olympic ski racer, is on the board of directors for the team from the United States.

“I love speed and adrenaline, so when the opportunity presented itself it was a no-brainer,” Ms. Vonn said in a text message. She attended the race live on Saturday.

On Sunday, the races started around 1 p.m., prompting many guests to put down their champagne and Aperol spritzes and approach the edge of the water to take in the sailing.

Unlike in Formula 1, where a spectator can see only a short stretch of the track at a time, all of SailGP’s racing happens in a tight area in full view of the crowd.

The event is a series of three short races (each one lasts about 15 minutes) in which the boats circle the course multiple times, depending on the wind conditions.

For the boat to turn, 32 functions have to be performed by the team in unison. The catamarans are close enough to shore to see the sailors — there are usually six on each boat — in action.

Jennifer Falvey, 63, a real estate agent, had traveled from Woodstock, Vt., for the event after hearing it about it from a friend. “The boats are just so sexy,” she said.

Daniela Forte, who came with her husband from Westport, Conn., was struck by the speed.

“I don’t have a sailing background, and I had never heard of SailGP before this event, but it’s kind of an amazing idea,” she said. “Sailing has always felt like something you had to do, not just something you can watch, but this is amazing.”

An hour and a half after the first race started, the team from New Zealand was declared the winner (a television broadcaster announced: “The Kiwis have conquered Manhattan.”) The top three contenders are now New Zealand, Australia and Spain — ahead of the season finals in San Francisco in the middle of July.

Then sailors, still wet from the water, filled the lounge for “Apres Sail.” Hundreds of people remained in the private lounge for hours, snacking on fresh plates of pasta and freshly shucked oysters.

Despite the stifling, 90-degree temperatures the party continued until late afternoon. Dance music blared over the loudspeakers, fans mingled with the sailors, and at least one bar ran out of champagne.
