You Can Charter the 151-Foot Superyacht From the New ‘Knives Out’ Movie for $228,000 a Week

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The sequel to Rian Johnson’s 2019 murder mystery Knives Out is making waves in more ways than one.

It’s estimated that Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery earned a solid $15 million in a one-week limited release. The whodunit has received wholly positive reviews and a rare 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. It has also produced one quite unlikely star: a luxury superyacht known as Aquarius , which is, coincidentally, available for charter .

This New Superyacht Has a Beautiful Aft Deck That Can Expand to Nearly 1,100 Square Feet

The 151-footer served as a backdrop for one of the key scenes in Glass Onion . The yacht’s captain, Ali Göksoy, also scored a cameo in the film. For a couple of hundred thousand a week, you too can experience a little Hollywood glitz and glamor aboard Aquarius .

Delivered by Turkey’s Mengi Yay in 2016, the superyacht pairs a straight bow with a handsome wood hull and superstructure. She offers a generous interior with five lavish cabins for up to 10 guests. The main deck owner’s stateroom features a king-sized bed, two balconies, an office and an en suite. On the lower deck, you’ll find three double staterooms and a twin cabin. There will also be a crew of nine catering to your every whim as if you were an A-lister.

Outside, meanwhile, Aquarius sports a veritable beach club at the stern, a Jacuzzi on the foredeck, a sizable flybridge and several other spots for sunning. She also comes with a full fleet of toys and tenders in case you need to make a quick escape. The vessel even has a spot on the aft deck for a couple of roadsters.

As for grunt, Aquarius is powered by twin Caterpillar engines that give her a cruising speed of 12 knots and a top speed of 15 knots. Of course, the yacht’s also equipped with stabilizers that make cruising the Mediterranean a real treat.

Aquarius is available exclusively with Ocean Independence . You can book her for charter in Turkey for roughly $228,000 (€220,000) a week.

The 45m (150ft) superyacht AQUARIUS has wowed audiences in her debut appearance on the thrilling murder mystery Netflix film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery , which has already proven a huge hit after ranking number one on Netflix’s ‘top 10 Films in the UK today’.

A long-awaited sequel to the original Knives Out film that arrived in 2019, Glass Onion features more opulence and drama as Daniel Craig returns as Detective Benoit Blanc to solve a very layered murder mystery.

While the first  Knives Out  film was set in a very Cluedo-Esque manor house in Massachusetts, USA , the second movie heads to a house called the ‘Glass Onion’ on a private estate on a fictional Greek island called 'Pisceshite Island.'

A number of scenes take place on board yacht AQUARIUS, the first being when the luxury motor yacht transports a group of friends to the lavish private estate of a tech billionaire, but when someone turns up dead, it appears that everyone on the island is hiding their own dark secrets, making each of them a threatening suspect.

Superyacht AQUARIUS - the real star of the show

Delivered in 2016, the Mengi Yay yacht AQUARIUS is the perfect charter platform for yachting vacations spent entertaining in style. Her generous deck spaces play host to a wide range of amenities including a luxurious full-beam beach club with a 3-way opening, an outdoor bar, a Jacuzzi and ample space for sun lounging and relaxing.

Designed for waterfront living, the lavish yacht is home to some impressive leisure and entertainment facilities that make her the ideal charter yacht for socializing and entertaining with family and friends.

Accommodating 10 guests across 5 beautifully decorated cabins, the yacht is extremely versatile for a variety of charter party configurations comprising a beautiful master suite with two private balconies on either side offering sweeping panoramic views and a further 3 double cabins and 1 twin cabin which are situated on the lower deck. The super yacht charter is also capable of carrying up to 9 crew onboard to ensure a seamless and high-end luxury yacht rental experience.

How much does the Glass Onion yacht AQUARIUS cost to charter?

She currently has an asking price of €220,000 for a 7-day charter and cruises the Mediterranean all year round.

Glass Onion Location

A destination offering peace and tranquility like no other.

Glass Onion was filmed in Greece and Serbia, primarily on the luscious island of Spetses , a playground for Greek tycoons and the Global Elite. Oozing old-world glamor, nautical charm and scenic beauty, there is no doubt that this is one of the most exclusive charter regions in the Mediterranean.

yacht in knives out

Beautiful nature, perfect beaches and a complex history ‒ Spetses is an island that has all three.

Viewers will most likely want to know where the luxurious villa they see on their screens is located and they may even wonder if they can stay there themselves. The answer is yes. Filming for Miles’s luxurious villa took place on the nearby mainland at Villa 20 in the Amanzoe resort near the small town of Porto Heli and you can request to book and stay there this summer if you wish.

Amanzoe Resort

Live like the movie stars.

During production, the cast and crew of Glass Onion reportedly stayed at the Amanzoe resort where filming took place in the summer of 2021.

Luxurious, sophisticated and simply divine, the Amanzoe resort is described as a modern-day Acropolis from which 360-degree views encompass olive groves and the Aegean sea. Created by a team who worked hard and methodically to create a "world-class exclusive resort worthy of the incomparable beauty of Greece", it definitely stands out from the crowd.

The masterpiece of Amanzoe’s villas is the Acropolis-inspired Villa 20, the perfect backdrop for a movie like Glass Onion

With the option to stay in luxurious cabanas, pavilions and exclusive villas, each offering private pools with stunning views and fragrant gardens, the resort caters to everyone's needs and wants. Home to a tranquil wellness center, a private beach and a distinctive beach club, which is a destination in itself, it is certain that guests will feel relaxed from the moment they arrive.

The Amanzoe is currently closed and will reopen for an exciting summer season on the 1st April 2023. Giving you a glimpse of the luxurious lifestyle, guests on a Mediterranean yacht charter can enjoy a night at this resort in one of the best 6-bedroom villas for around €13,500 per night in April while in the middle of summer that increases to €17,729 per night.

Yacht rentals in the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean abounds in outstandingly beautiful cruising grounds that the SuperyachtSet adores. Comprising perennial favorites such as the Balearics , Amalfi Coast and Greece, a private yacht charter here truly never disappoints. From serene anchorages to glittering cities fizzing with life, this destination has it all.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery ’s Superyacht Star

Ocean independence shines on the silver screen, written by emily bunn, december 7, 2022.

One of the biggest blockbuster debuts of 2020, Knives Out is now being followed up by its whodunit sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery . Leading luxury superyacht charter company, Ocean Independence , makes an appearance in the film with one of its most extraordinary vessels .

Ocean Independence Aquarius Yacht

The murder mystery flick tells the tale of a tech billionaire’s private island retreat with friends. After one of his guests ends up dead, Detective Benoit Blanc investigates the crime.

The star-studded cast includes Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, with Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista.

However, one of the undeniably biggest stars of the film is not an actor or actress, but is the setting for one of the crime comedy’s key scenes. Part of the film is set on Captain Ali Göksoy’s 46 meter superyacht, Aquarius .

Ocean Independence Aquarius Yacht

Aquarius can accommodate up to ten guests in five cabins. Boaters can also unwind on one of several balconies, in the Jacuzzi, or at the sprawling beach club.

Ocean Independence Aquarius Yacht

The posh superyacht is currently offered for charter exclusively from Ocean Independence for EUR 220,000 (approximately $231,363.00) per week. She will become available in Turkey in mid-September.

Aquarius will make her Netflix debut on December 23 and be featured in numerous movie theaters.

Glass Onion: 9 Behind-The-Scenes Facts About Netflix's Knives Out Sequel

Peering through the dense layers of this fun mystery.

Janelle Monae and Daniel Craig in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

It is no mystery why the 2022 follow-up to Knives Out has won the hearts of most critics , become an enduring hit on Netflix’s trending page , and received a 2023 Academy Award nomination for its screenplay. However, Glass Onion (which is how I will refer to it because writer and director Rian Johnson prefers it without the subtitle , A Knives Out Mystery ), is not without its mysteries beyond the twisted murder case at the center of its story.

Related: Trending On Netflix: The Top 10 Lists For Movies And TV

Well, we decided to pull a Benoit Blanc and get to the bottom of some of the best kept secrets surrounding one of the best movies of 2022 (in our opinion) and one of the best movies released on Netflix in 2022 (or best movies on Netflix ever, for that matter). Regardless of how much you agree with those statements, you may not be able to deny that there are fascinating behind-the-scenes facts to reveal about Glass Onion and we have compiled our most interesting favorites below.

The Beatles in The Beatles: Get Back

A Beatles Song Inspired The Title, Glass Onion

As a fan of The Beatles, I was just as surprised as Rian Johnson to learn how few people made the connection between Glass Onion and the Fab Four’s eponymous track off of 1968’s The White Album when the film’s title was officially announced in 2022 . In fact, the filmmaker has an interesting story that he revealed to Deadline as to how the song that plays during the end credits inspired the name:

I’d gotten to a point where I had the idea of a central metaphor that Blanc could latch onto and beat like a dead horse. Something that was made of glass. Something that was layered, but the center was in plain sight, and so on. And I thought, OK, well the billionaire is going to have an island, and maybe he has some structure on it that’s made of glass, so… is it a glass castle? Is it a glass palace? I literally opened the music app on my phone and just searched the word ‘glass,’ and ‘Glass Onion’ popped up.

Knives Out is also synonymous with a Radiohead song, but Johnson insisted to the Los Angeles Times that the connection ends at the name and that he -- a massive fan of the band -- had the phrase in his head at the time he was writing. It makes me wonder what tune the franchise’s upcoming third installment could be named after if the filmmaker goes in that direction again.

Netflix logo

Netflix Spent Millions For The Streaming Rights To Glass Onion

With all of the cancelled series it has picked up (i.e., Manifest) and nostalgic favorites it has revived (such as That ‘90s Show , a continuation of That ‘70s Show ), Netflix is becoming the Number One place to — not necessarily start, but — continue a franchise. One of the most famous and expensive examples of this is when it acquired distribution rights to Glass Onion .

In 2021, according to The Hollywood Reporter , a “discreet” auction that competitors like Amazon and Apple participated in was closed out when Netflix became the home to the Knives Out sequel (and the series’ upcoming third installment) for $469 million. That is the kind of money that suspects of Benoit Blanc’s cases often kill for.

Daniel Craig in Glass Onion

Daniel Craig Had To Relearn Benoit Blanc’s Accent

Speaking of Benoit Blanc, the gentleman sleuth is known for speaking in a unique “Foghorn Leghorn Southern drawl” as Chris Evans ’ Ransom Drysdale describes in Knives Out . However, recapturing that distinct accent for Glass Onion proved to be a challenge for Daniel Craig.

The British former James Bond actor revealed to Empire that he had forgotten how to speak like the astute private eye since he first originated him in 2019. So, in the hope of avoiding doing a “pastiche,” he worked with an accent coach for months to make sure he sounded as authentic as possible.

Kaley Cuoco Auditioned For Kate Hudson’s Role

While a part of us wishes we could have seen more of the Knives Out cast reprise their roles alongside Craig in the sequel, that would have meant we wouldn't have gotten Glass Onion ’s wonderful ensemble , which also includes Janelle Monae , Edward Norton , and Dave Bautista . Someone who really wanted to be in the sequel, as she recalls in the excerpt from a Glamour interview below, was Kaley Cuoco:

I was convinced [the part was mine]. Kate Hudson ended up getting it. But I was so convinced that my bags were packed for Greece. And then I didn’t get it. I was so devastated. And I’m not [normally] devastated over roles. I had done chemistry reads, I had done Zooms. And I didn’t get it. I cried and I cried all night long. And it went to Kate, who’s great.

I would certainly agree that Kate Hudson — who also got to reunite with Kathryn Hahn nearly two decades after How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days — did a wonderful job as Birdie Jay. Yet, I can also imagine an alternate reality in which the former Big Bang Theory cast member kills it as the self-absorbed fashion designer.

Edward Norton, Kate Hudson, Kathryn Hahnn, Leslie Odom Jr. and Madelyn Cline in Glass Onion

Some Cast Members Had A Say In Their Characters’ Costume Design

Speaking of fashion, the wardrobe choices for the characters in Glass Onion are so exquisite and on-point, that it is surprising that costume designer Jenny Eagan did not get an Oscar nomination as well. Then again, if her designs had been recognized, she technically would have had to share the nomination with the actors.

An official behind-the-scenes featurette about Glass Onion ’s costume design released on YouTube reveals that the clothing choices were a collaborative effort between Eagan and some of the cast members. For instance, Daniel Craig based his look off Cary Grant in To Catch a Thief and Leslie Odom Jr. wanted Lionel’s wardrobe to subvert that of your typical movie scientist.

Stephen Sondheim, Angela Lansbury, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Natasha Lyonne on Zoom in Glass Onion

Stephen Sondheim Helped Get Angela Lansbury In Glass Onion

Another eye-popping element of Glass Onion is all the epic cameos — such as Hugh Grant as Blanc’s husband , Philip, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (a frequent collaborator of Johnson’s) as the voice of “The Hourly Dong,” and, of course, all of the detective’s famous friends. Those appearing as themselves in that group over a Zoom call include Johnson’s Poker Face star Natasha Lyonne, NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Stephen Sondheim, and Angela Lansbury.

The late theatre icon apparently had a hand in convincing the three-time Oscar-nominated Murder, She Wrote actor — who also passed away in 2022 — to show up in Glass Onion . Johnson recalled to the The New York Times mentioning to Sondheim that he wanted to get Lansbury, to which he said, “Oh, Angie — I’m friends with her. Tell her I’m doing it. She’ll do it.” That was that.

Leslie Odom Jr. with yacht captain in Glass Onion

The Captain Of Miles’ Yacht Was Played By The Real Yacht’s Captain

Also starring in Glass Onion as himself, apparently, is the captain who runs Miles Bron’s yacht and cheekily refers to the billionaire’s dock as a “Pisceshite.” This man is not a professional actor, but the actual captain of the yacht used in the movie, as Leslie Odom Jr . mentions during a cast reunion video also shared to the Still Watching Netflix channel on YouTube.

In fact, Johnson points out in that same video that the captain — who goes unnamed in the video and unmentioned in the film’s credits, too — “begrudgingly” took on the role, wanting no part of it despite being very familiar with was being asked of him. It is actually not unusual for non-actors to appear as themselves — such as most of the cast of Nomadland — and we are honored to include him on that list, regardless of his reluctance.

Edward Norton in Glass Onion

Exterior Footage Of Miles’ Estate Was Shot At A Real Greek Villa

Another member of the Glass Onion crew whom I was surprised did not receive any recognition from the Academy this year was production designer Rick Heinrichs, especially for the extremely luxurious appearance of Miles Bron’s (Edward Norton) beautiful Greek private Island. That was, however, until I learned that the estate was not a product of Heinrichs’ mind, but already existed before production.

In a featurette found on the Still Watching Netflix channel on YouTube about Glass Onion ’s production design , Johnson talks about how the first half of principal photography was done at a real estate in Greece called “Villa 20.” A quick look at the villa’s official website will show that Miles Bron’s pool, eclectic garden, and general exterior design are all part of the retreat. The titular glass structure that sits atop the estate was added digitally, however.

Mona Lisa burning in Glass Onion

A Scrapped Post-Credits Scene Almost Changed The Mona Lisa’s Fate

What makes the conclusion of Glass Onion so explosively entertaining — SPOILER ALERT — is the way Helen Brand (Janelle Monae) really hits Miles where it hurts by also fulfilling his dream of ensuring he will be remembered in the same breath as the Mona Lisa… by burning the real painting (which Bron had rented) to a crisp. This shocking sight could have been a little less devastating had Johnson stuck with his original plan.

In an interview for Empire’s Spoiler Special podcast (via ComicBook.com ), Johnson shared that the movie almost had a post-credits scene revealing that iconic art piece was actually still being held safely at the Louvre and that Bron had unwittingly been given a fake. However, the filmmaker says that, instead of “[pulling] a punch,” he prefers the idea that the Benoit Blanc Universe’s version of the Mona Lisa actually is no more.

As a fun, bonus behind-the-scenes fact, in a feature-length behind-the-scenes video on the Still Watching Netflix channel, Outer Banks cast member Madelyn Cline recalls hearing Johnson giggle behind the camera, which Craig would point out means that they had a good take. If only he could hear his fans giggle at Glass Onion , he would know just how much they thought he did another good job with this one.

DIRECTOR RIAN JOHNSON HAD BIG PLANS FOR GLASS ONION . HERE IS A GUIDED TOUR OF THE AQUARIUS, THE FABULOUS SUPERYACHT THAT APPEARS IN DANIEL CRAIG’S NEW WHODUNIT FILM.

The Aquarius, the gorgeous superyacht in Netflix’s Glass Onion

Director Rian Johnson went big for this new chapter of detective Benoit Blanc’s adventures. Gone is the family mansion from Knives Out , and they’re off to Greece and the AMAN Resort’s sublime Villa 20 for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery . In the film, to get to billionaire Miles Bron’s (Edward Norton) private island, his friends and Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) board the Aquarius, a luxury superyacht.

This fabulous ship was built in 2016 by Mengi Yay, a Turkish shipbuilder specialised in these exceptional boats. To meet the needs of the luxury market, the Aquarius has all the characteristics of a high-end establishment right on the water. It can accommodate up to 10 people with its five magnificent cabins, each equipped with a sleeping area and a private bathroom. For common rooms, it has a large living area entirely surrounded by windows leading out to a large balcony on each side. Outside, there is a large lounge, a jacuzzi and several sunbathing areas awaiting holidaymakers.

Operated by the agency Ocean Independence , Aquarius cruises take place in the Mediterranean basin throughout the year. For €220,000 a week, passengers will be able to appreciate the comfort and beauty of the ship and the Greek coast, just like the characters in Glass Onion , but boaters can avoid the film’s disastrous mysteries!

Top 200 largest yachts in the world Superyacht Christina O

The most spectacular yachts in film and TV

The glitz and glamour of superyachts makes them ideal stars for everything from box-office blockbusters to the latest Netflix drama...

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Yacht: aquarius.

The 45 metre Mengi Yay motor yacht Aquarius makes an appearance in the opening of the trailer for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery , the follow-up to the Acadamy Award-winning murder mystery Knives Out starring Daniel Craig. Delivered in 2016, the yacht can sleep up to 10 guests and eight crew across her three decks. Aquarius has a top speed of 15 knots that will no doubt be put to the test in Rian Johnson's sequel, which is set to be released on Netflix in December.

Triangle of Sadness

Yacht: christina o.

Dark comedy Triangle of Sadness follows a fashion model celebrity couple who are invited on board a superyacht cruise for the ultra-rich, but the vessel ends up sinking, leaving its guests and crew stranded on an island. The 99.15 metre classic superyacht Christina O is the star of the film, which suitably premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. Christina O was famously owned by Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Socrates Onassis who transformed her from an anti-submarine frigate to a luxury superyacht that has welcomed the likes of Winston Churchill, JF Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra on board. Actor Woody Harrelson joins its star-studded guest list as he plays the role of the captain in the film.

Inventing Anna

Yacht: leight star.

The 42.67 metre motor yacht Leight Star was featured in the Netflix docudrama Inventing Anna, based on the true story of fraudster socialite Anna Delvey. The yacht was renamed Caprilla for the episode and sees protagonist Anna Sorokin stepping out of a Chris Craft tender and onto the swim platform to join her friends in Ibiza (before outstaying her welcome). Leight Star was built in 1984 by the American shipyard Sun State. Her top deck, which is used mostly for sun lounging, can double as a helipad for guests looking to arrive in style.

No Time to Die

Yacht: spirit 46.

A Spirit 46 sailing yacht takes a starring role in the James Bond film  No Time to Die . The 14 metre sailing yacht features in the film, which catches up with Bond following his departure from active service. This is not the first time Spirit Yachts has collaborated with the Bond franchise. In 2006, the 16.4-metre sailing yacht  Spirit  featured heavily in Daniel Craig's first Bond film  Casino Royale  when it became the first sailing yacht to travel up Venice's Grand Canal in 300 years.

Yacht: Planet Nine

The 73 metre explorer yacht  Planet Nine  takes centre stage in Christopher Nolan’s time travelling blockbuster  Tenet . Spanning seven countries,  Tenet  follows protagonist David Washington as he fights to ensure the survival of the whole world. Delivered in 2018, the ice-classed explorer  Planet Nine  features a large helicopter hangar and pair of superyacht elevators connecting all five decks. Elsewhere, the yacht boasts a panoramic observatory lounge, a boot room for heli-skiing activities and a cinema on the upper deck.

6 Underground

Yacht: kismet.

The 95.2 metre  Lürssen  superyacht  Kismet  plays a pivotal role in Michael Bay’s newly released Netflix debut  6 Underground . Starring Ryan Reynolds,  6 Underground  sees a team of international operatives tasked with taking down a notorious dictator. The  Espen Øino -designed superyacht is the setting for the climactic final scenes of the film which sees  Kismet , the final stronghold of the dictator, dramatically blown up.

Yacht: Solandge

Lurssen’s  85.1 metre superyacht  Solandge   took a starring role in the second series of Sky Atlantic’s  Succession . The climactic final episode, in which Brian Cox’s Logan Roy makes a life-changing decision, is based entirely on the yacht and showcases its first-class facilities. Scenes of the episode journeyed from  Solandge’s  massive indoor and outdoor gym on the main deck to the outdoor cinema and nightclub. Elsewhere,  Solandge  features a full dive centre, extensive spa with a sauna, steam room, massage room and beauty salon, as well as a generous swimming pool on the sun deck.

Murder Mystery

Yacht: sarastar.

The 60 metre  Mondomarine superyacht  Sarastar  is the setting for Netflix film  Murder Mystery . The action follows a stagnant married couple played by Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston who join a billionaire on board his family yacht. They are soon caught up in an Agatha Christie-style murder mystery on board and it doesn’t take long for the couple to become prime suspects.

Yacht: Turquoise

The 55.4 metre superyacht  Turquoise  stars in the Sky Atlantic drama  Riviera . Set in the French Riviera, the series follows American art curator Georgina Clios, whose life is upended after her billionaire husband Constantine dies in a yacht accident. Turquoise was built by Turkish yard  Turquoise Yachts  in 2011 with an all-British design team behind her build: her exterior is the work of Ed Dubois  with London studio  H2 Yacht Design  styling her lavish interiors, which can accommodate up to 12 guests and 13 crew.

Yacht: Haida 1929

Classic motor yacht Haida 1929 plays a starring role in Meryl Streep’s exuberant rendition of Money, Money, Money in the hit musical film Mamma Mia!. Built in 1929 , she is one of the oldest yachts still sailing today and offers guests a taste of yachting in the 1930s. She has had 12 owners in her lifetime and saw service in the Second World War and had long been admired by owner No 12 who extensively refitted this piece of maritime history over 16 months. In Mamma Mia! , Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski and Julie Walters are seen riding jet skis and drinking champagne in a dream world on board the superyacht.

The Wolf on Wall Street

M3  (previously Lady M ) played a crucial role in 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street . When Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) hits the big time, he splashes out on the luxury yacht and names it Naomi after his second wife (as played by Margot Robbie). However, the film takes a disastrous turn when the superyacht sinks during a stormy passage between Porto Cervo and Capri — a scene that closely mirrors Belfort’s real-life yachting disaster in 1997. Directed by Martin Scorcese, The Wolf of Wall Street was one of the most successful movies of 2013, grossing more than $116 million at the box office.

Yacht: Aria I

Daniel Craig's recent turns as 007 brought a new generation of beautiful sailing yachts onto the big screen, the most notable of which being Aria I . This 56 metre steel schooner from Pruva Yachting  starred in the 2012 film Skyfall as Chimera , the yacht which carried James Bond to villain Raoul Silva's island hideaway. Preparing the yacht for filming was an arduous process, including re-upholstering inside and out.

American Assasian

Yacht: itama 62.

Michael Keaton and Dylan O’Brien were the big names in the 2017 counter-terrorism thriller American Assassin , based on Vince Flynn’s 2010 novel of the same name, but the real star was surely the Itama 62. This 19 metre speedboat stole the show in a spectacular chase scene, which involved O’Brien jumping onto the moving yacht. Built in Italy as part of the Ferretti Group’s extensive range, the Itama 62 has a top speed of 40 knots thanks to twin MAN V12 engines and can accommodate up to six guests in three cabins.

Yacht: Usher

When US comedy series Entourage was given the Hollywood treatment in 2015 it was only fitting that the party-loving boys should be seen living the high life on a glamorous yacht. Delta Marine ’s 2007 launch Usher (formerly Mr Terrible ) took on a starring role by hosting a yacht party in the film’s opening scene, before lead character Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) embarks on a disastrous career directing movies.

Bonus entry: Argylle

Tender: sportjet 520.

This spy thriller is directed by Michael Vaughn, the mind behind the much-beloved action-comedy Kingsman . The plot follows Bryce Dallas Howard as author Elly Conway, as she learns that the plots of her best-selling espionage novels are starting to mirror the actions of a real-life spy organisation. The Williams SportJet 520 tender will no doubt feature in several high-octane chase scenes when the film premieres on 24 January 2024. Other big names include Henry Cavill (as the titular spy Argylle), Bryan Cranston and Dua Lipa.

Create Your Own ‘Knives Out’ Mystery Aboard 151-Foot Superyacht Aquarius

James Want

Already being hailed as better than the original , Rian Johnson’s sequel to Knives Out – Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery – sees the return of Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc, alongside an eccentric cast of stars old and new. While critics have applauded the standout performances from Craig, Dave Bautista, Kate Hudson, Ed Norton, Janelle Monáe, and more, it’s their 151-foot floating accomplice Aquarius that got the BH office talking.

yacht in knives out

Built by Mengi Yay circa 2016, the Knives Out 2 superyacht Aquarius broke convention for the Turkish shipyard and influenced a new era of yacht design, dominated by expansive beach clubs. Fanboys with pockets as deep as the Thrombey family tech billionaire Miles Bron can create their own whodunnit aboard the very yacht in question, which is available to charter for a paltry €220,000 per week (AU$337,000) exclusively via Ocean Independence.

Knives Out 2 Aquarius Salon

At sub 500GT this 151-footer is the sweet spot in chartering boasting an almost 1:1 crew to guests ratio, and more space for activities than even the most demanding charter guest could utilise. Located in the picturesque waters of Turkey, the Knives Out 2 superyacht Aquarius (and its now famous captain) is ready to welcome you.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery  arrives on Netflix later this month just before Christmas (December 23rd).

33 fun details you may have missed from 'Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery'

  • Warning: There are spoilers ahead for "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery."
  • The cheeky murder mystery "Glass Onion" comes to Netflix today.
  • Throughout the film, there are multiple clues that hint at the identity of the killer.

One of the opening scenes highlights how Miles may not be the genius he's made out to be.

yacht in knives out

The opening scenes of "Glass Onion" portray tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) as a secluded, misunderstood genius who likes to test his friends. However, by the end of the movie, it's revealed that this is a facade and the character is just as big of an idiot as the people he surrounds himself with.

On the second watch, one might notice the signs were there from the very start . When Lionel Touissant (Leslie Odom Jr.), Miles' lead scientist, tries to defend his friend's plans to the company board, he brings up how the tech leader sends wild ideas to him via fax.

In hindsight, these ideas seem like someone just throwing random words at the wall and seeing what sticks, which is probably why "Child = NFT" was the only idea mentioned that actually turned into a successful business venture.

The invitation cards have an evil eye symbol on them.

yacht in knives out

After Miles' friends complete his game box, they find an invitation to his private island in Greece. What's interesting about the card is there's a symbol of an evil eye, or a mati, which has had different meanings throughout history.

Its inclusion could be a connection to Greece, where the film takes place. It could also be because the symbol is worn to ward off evil and may be a reference to how the so-called disruptors group, the name Miles gives his friends, protects Miles and helps keep him in power.

We first see Benoit Blanc playing the viral game "Among Us," foreshadowing the film's eventual conclusion.

yacht in knives out

"Among Us," an internet game where players try to find a killer in their group, went viral in 2020, partly because everyone was stuck at home during the pandemic.

When we first meet our lead detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) , he's trying to play the game with a group of celebrity friends.

The fact that it's a game where one of the players is a secret murderer foreshadows the murders by an unknown party later in the movie.

Blanc is playing "Among Us" with multiple celebrities with connections to the murder mystery genre.

yacht in knives out

The movie reveals the detective is playing with none other than Angela Lansbury , Stephen Sondheim, Natasha Lyonne, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, all portraying themselves.

All of these celebrities have a connection with murder mysteries. Lyonne is set to star in Johnson's murder mystery series "Poker Face" while Kareem Abdul-Jabbar previously played himself in the 1985 murder mystery "Fletch."

Lansbury, who is named "MSheSolved" in the "Among Us" game, was the iconic star of the classic murder drama "Murder, She Wrote."

Sondheim co-wrote "The Last of Sheila," which director Rian Johnson previously said was one of his favorite murder mysteries during a press conference at the London Film Festival, which Insider attended.

"Glass Onion" also appears to pay homage to some of that movie's plot points, such as a rich man inviting his friends to a remote sunny location to play games on their annual holiday.

There are a lot of games mentioned in "Glass Onion." It could hint at why Blanc didn't solve the mystery straight away.

yacht in knives out

When we meet Benoit, he appears to be in a pandemic slump, unable to find new mysteries to solve . While playing "Among Us," Lyonne mentions how their group has tried other mystery games too, such as  "Codenames" and "Quipplash."

Later in the film, Benoit criticizes the game "Clue," complaining that it's dumb.

This focus on different games and puzzles could highlight how Blanc was looking for a complicated answer to what turned out to be a simple mystery.

When Helen Brand, posing as her twin sister Andi (Janelle Monáe), accuses Miles of being the killer, Benoit immediately shoots it down, saying the tech leader wouldn't be dumb enough to kill someone he was public enemies with, despite that being exactly the case.

The mystery puzzle book "Cain's Jawbone" hints that the film will rely on flashbacks.

yacht in knives out

When the shot zooms out to show Benoit in his bathtub, the mystery puzzle book "Cain's Jawbone" is on the floor.

The book, which invites readers to figure out the right order of the story, foreshadows how the film won't be told in chronological order. There are numerous time jumps that weave through the movie.

Duke mentions early in the film that he doesn't "dance with pineapple," referring to his deadly allergy.

yacht in knives out

When Duke dies halfway through the film, it's assumed that the character had been poisoned and that poison was meant for Miles. It is later revealed that Miles had killed the character by putting pineapple juice in his drink, which Duke is allergic to.

Duke mentions his allergy when he is given medicine to keep him safe from COVID-19 at the rendezvous point, saying "Duke don't dance with pineapple."

Despite Miles' company being called Alpha, Omega symbols are scattered throughout his Island getaway.

yacht in knives out

Miles became rich through the formation of his tech company Alpha. However, it's another Greek letter — Omega — that appears often throughout the movie.

It first appears on the boat that takes the group to Miles' island. It's also on a robe that Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn) wears as well as a pin on Lionel's dinner outfit.

Alpha and Omega often refer to the beginning and the end because they're the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. The inclusion of Omega could point to the film's themes of past and future with time jumps in addition to showing the dubious start to Miles' empire and how it could soon be coming to an end.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt makes his second "Knives Out" cameo in "Glass Onion."

yacht in knives out

In "Knives Out," Joseph Gordon-Levitt has a secret cameo at the beginning of the movie. He voices Detective Hardrock, a character within an in-universe TV series that lead character Marta (Ana de Armas) watches. Since fans never see him on-screen, many did not realize the cameo even happened.

A similar cameo happens in "Glass Onion" as Gordon-Levitt voices the loud sound that occurs every hour on Miles' private island, which the tech leader calls the "hourly dong."

Noah Segan also makes his second "Knives Out" cameo.

yacht in knives out

The main cast are the only humans on the island, except for a guy called Derol (Noah Segan) who occasionally pops up at random moments of the story. Miles explains in the beginning that Derol is having a hard time and is just crashing on the island for a bit.

However, Segan has already appeared in the first "Knives Out" film as Trooper Wagner, one of the cops investigating the movie's murder mystery.

Director Rian Johnson told Entertainment Weekly that Segan's cameos are there because the pair are long-time friends and collaborators.

"That's my friend Noah Segan, who's actually in the first movie as well," Johnson said. "We totally re-styled him. I think he's unrecognizable in this."

Johnson said that Derol is meant to be like Kato Kaelin, a minor witness in the 1995 OJ Simpson murder trial since he happened to be staying in the guest house on Simpson's estate on the night of the two murders.

"The notion of having a Kato Kaelin-type guy who's hanging out on the island, and to get Noah out there and hanging out with us in Greece — I'll never pass up that opportunity," Johnson said.

Blanc makes a subtle comment about anonymity that calls back to "Knives Out."

yacht in knives out

When Benoit arrives on the island, Miles tells him that he didn't actually invite him to his murder mystery weekend despite receiving the same invitation as everyone else. Miles allows Benoit to stay because he thinks it will be fun, but the detective warns him to not think lightly about the mistake.

"An anonymous invitation is not to be trifled with," Benoit says.

This is a callback to the first film when Benoit was hired to solve Harlan Thrombey's (Christoper Plummer) murder. It turns out Harlan's grandson Ransom (Chris Evans) hired Benoit anonymously, hoping to frame Harlan's nurse, Marta.

Another indicator that Miles is a fraud is that he didn't know the game box could be reset.

yacht in knives out

After his interrogation of Benoit , Miles comes to the conclusion that someone must have reset his game box and sent it to Blanc as a joke.

This interaction leaves hints that Miles didn't actually create the boxes since he didn't know how they worked or that they could even be reset.

Duke mentions he was almost "pancaked" by Miles in his Porsche.

yacht in knives out

Johnson leaves a clue to the whole mystery very early on when all the characters are by the pool. Duke jokes about the time he was riding his motorbike and Miles nearly "pancaked" him in his iconic blue porsche outside Andi's house.

Duke knew it was Miles because he recognized the car, which the billionaire loves so much that he bought a miniature version of it.

The comment goes unnoticed at first because the YouTuber makes it sound like it was a drunken mishap. Miles interrupts him, saying that Anderson Cooper throws wild house parties.

This throws the audience off the scent that Miles had anything to do with Andi's mysterious death, when in actuality, Duke is referencing how he saw his friend leaving the scene of the crime.

Duke Cody has finger tattoos that foreshadow his gamer past.

yacht in knives out

Later in the film, it's revealed that Duke was a gamer when he first met Miles.

While a lot has changed since then, the character still has finger tattoos referencing his love for "Star Wars," "Superman" and "The Avengers." He also has a "Spectre" tattoo which refers to Bautista's previous role in the James Bond film.

Miles foreshadows his own downfall during his disruptors speech.

yacht in knives out

Early in the movie, Benoit asks Miles what he means when he calls his collaborators "disruptors." Miles gives a long speech about how they are the only ones that "break things you're not supposed to break" and they can only make a difference by breaking the system entirely.

It's later revealed that their "disruption" is more akin to mistakes and they are the system, not the ones breaking it.

However, Helen becomes a true disruptor at the end of the movie by bringing Miles down.

We see Blanc pick up and pocket the hot sauce which he uses later to fake Andi/Helen's death.

yacht in knives out

While they're in the living room of the mansion, Benoit tries a bit of Jeremy Renner's special hot sauce, which Miles leaves in his room.

Miles tells Benoit to keep one as a gift and this comes in handy later when he used it as fake blood to make everyone else believe that "Andi" (Helen in disguise) had been killed.

Miles brags about an override button for his "Mona Lisa" glass case. It takes him down in the end.

yacht in knives out

When Miles reveals that he is keeping the real "Mona Lisa" painting in his mansion, he says that they forced him to put a sensor on the case that makes it close whenever there's a loud noise or a lot of heat. However, Miles said he installed an override button to re-open the case when this happens.

Helen later uses this to her advantage in the finale, causing the "Mona Lisa" to get destroyed in the Klear fire that consumes the mansion. By flouting the rules, Miles causes his own downfall.

The main light in the Glass Onion mansion is shaped like Klear's rock-like solid form.

yacht in knives out

Miles' Glass Onion mansion is a unique design, decorated with a variety of seemingly impressive items and artwork all serving the billionaire's ego.

For example, he's so sure that Klear Hydrogen will be a success that he's already commissioned someone to make a light fixture in the shape of the fuel's solid form that Miles shows off to the group.

Miles is so convinced of its success, that he has a giant light in the main room that is actually in the shape of the fuel's rock-like state.

Lionel says that Miles is "gonna get somebody killed."

yacht in knives out

Johnson ramps up the foreshadowing when Miles starts lecturing the group about Klear Hydrogen and how it's going to be successful.

The group is in shock over the fuel and Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn) says backing it completely goes against her environmentalist campaign.

But it's Lionel Toussaint (Leslie Odom Jr.) who inadvertently teases Miles as the murderer, saying that Miles is "gonna get somebody killed."

While in the context of the scene he was referring to Klear's dangerous explosive properties, it's a neat way to forewarn the audience that Miles has already murdered someone and plans to strike again.

The murder mystery game maps out the rest of the night.

yacht in knives out

Although Miles brought his friends to the island to solve a murder mystery, the fictional story actually maps out a lot of what happens in the film.

First off, Miles has a packet of fake blood in his shirt to simulate being killed, which mirrors the hot sauce packet Benoit uses later on to make it look like Helen was shot on the stairs.

Second, the solution to the "murder" is actually very simple, but it's filled with nonsensical layers to confuse the guests (and the audience).

Third, the answer to the mystery is hidden in plain sight. While the necklace containing the diamond is right in front of them during the meal, the napkin with the plans for the company is in Miles' office, hidden behind the false napkin.

And finally, Miles took credit for something he didn't create. He introduces the game by saying that he spent a lot of time crafting the plot, but later confesses that someone else wrote the whole thing. It's exactly how he took credit for Andi's hard work building Alpha and then stole the company out from under her.

Basically, Miles has no originality whatsoever.

Gillian Flynn wrote Miles' murder mystery.

yacht in knives out

Miles later admits he hired someone to write the weekend's murder mystery for the gang.

But he doesn't just hire any old ghost writer. Miles hired bestselling author Gillian Flynn to pen the fake mystery for the weekend.

The "Gone Girl" and "Sharp Objects" author writes in the suspense genre specializing in twists, so it was a nice little nod to include her.

Duke says he recieves Google alerts on his phone, which is how he becomes the first person to find out about Andi's death.

yacht in knives out

Duke Cody explains he has Google alerts set up on his phone for things that he's interested in, like the word "movies." This leads him to see the news reports of Andi's death before anyone else, and he instantly realizes that Helen is masquerading as Andi on the island.

This also makes the YouTuber realize that Miles killed Andi because he saw him speeding away from the scene of the crime in the week before their trip to Greece.

Although Duke is careful not to show anyone else what he's seen, even hiding his phone from Birdie, he has no qualms about blackmailing Miles to help him elevate his brand online.

We originally see Miles hand Duke the poisoned drink. Later, the flashback is purposefully misleading.

yacht in knives out

When it comes to Duke's death, the film deliberately toys with the audience. When Miles first comes over with the pineapple-laced whiskey, it shows the billionaire handing the glass to his friend. It's a subtle moment that seems inconsequential during a first watch.

Especially because when Miles explains himself, the misleading-mini flashback shows him putting the drink down, before Duke mistakes it for his own glass.

It's a moment designed to trick everyone into thinking that Miles is telling the truth because he instantly has an excuse for why Duke drank the pineapple, and the visual evidence is enough to fool the audience.

In a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, Miles has Duke's phone in his pocket.

yacht in knives out

Duke kept his pistol on his belt at all times, which mysteriously goes missing after his death. His phone disappears, too.

Although we don't see Miles stash the gun out of sight, eagle-eyed viewers can see Duke's phone sticking out of his pocket when he runs away from the rest of the guests, screaming that someone is out to get him. This is all a ruse to hide the fact that he's the killer.

It's easy to miss because it's a fast-paced scene, but it's a very clear indication that he stole the phone (and probably muted those irritating Google alert notifications).

Blanc gets his names mixed up.

yacht in knives out

One of the film's biggest twists is that Benoit has been helping Helen pretend to be her murdered twin sister, Andi. He's known her identity the whole time because she was the one who hired him.

Their surprising partnership quickly becomes one of the most fun aspects of the movie as they work together to try to discover the truth of Andi's death.

But during the blackout, Benoit momentarily forgets that they're trying to keep up appearances when he finds Helen by the staircase. He calls her by her real name rather than her sister's.

Helen's suspect chart puts Miles above everyone else.

yacht in knives out

Helen and Benoit definitely have one of the most fun dynamics in the whole film as they try and peel back all the layers in the mystery.

And Helen is quick to make a list of suspects in her sister's notebook, with a grid of "Motive" and "Opportunity" so that she can tick each person's name if they had reason to kill her sister.

But the director smartly leaves a blink-and-you'll-miss-it clue in the notebook that Miles is the killer.

Helen writes Miles' name next to "Motive" and "Opportunity" rather than below the line on the page, likely a hint that his motive and opportunity supersedes everyone else's.

Birdie takes the knife.

yacht in knives out

The guests are (understandbly) upset when Duke dies, especially when they realize the YouTuber's gun is missing as well as one of the steak knives from the kitchen.

The knife reappears later on when Birdie returns to the room. She immediately drops it when she sees everyone, clearly in anticipation of being accused of murder.

The knife was just for her own protection, but at least Johnson gives audiences an answer as to where it went.

Miles copies Steve Jobs in a key moment.

yacht in knives out

During the flashback scene where he and Andi fall out over Klear Hydrogen and the direction of their company, it's very obvious that Miles is trying to emulate another successful billionaire businessman.

He's dressed in Steve Jobs' signature look: a black turtleneck and blue jeans, a likely nod not only to his desire to be viewed as a visionary, but another example of him being unoriginal.

Serena Williams is reading a book titled "Gravity's Rainbow," which Benoit Blanc previously said no one has ever read.

"Glass Onion" is packed with surprising cameos, like "Murder, She Wrote" star Angela Lansbury and British star Hugh Grant, but one of the funniest appearances comes from star tennis player, Serena Williams.

When Benoit and Andi/Helen are running around the island, they duck into the gym to chat, where they realize that Serena Williams is on a video call as Miles' personal trainer waiting for him to show up. While waiting, she's reading a book called "Gravity's Rainbow."

Benoit references the book in "Knives Out" to Marta (Ana de Armas), joking that no one has actually ever read it. The 1973 book, about the aftermath of World War II, is incredibly lengthy at 760 pages.

Johnson explained the joke to SFGate back in 2019.

"I've read it twice now all the way through," he said. "I also just keep it around and will flip open to random spots and start reading. But I've kind of stopped recommending it to people. It's hard to recommend it without feeling like an asshole, because you're handing them a mountain to climb."

The real napkin can be seen behind Miles' fake napkin.

yacht in knives out

Benoit and Helen/Andi discover an envelope with the real napkin behind Miles' framed fake napkin.

He used the fake napkin in the trial to make it look like he was the one who came up with the idea for the company, usurping Andi out of her share of the money.

But the discovery calls back to Benoit's speech about the truth being hidden under a pile of lies: The truth was, in fact, hidden in plain sight all along. The red envelope can be seen through the frame's Fibonacci sequence design.

Lionel says "You didn't burn the envelope," foreshadowing what Miles will later do.

yacht in knives out

The finale of the film revolves around the fact that Miles kept Andi's envelope that has the original napkin from the bar where they jotted down their ideas for the now-successful company.

This would've been the smoking gun in the court case that Andi raised against Miles for ousting her from the company. When the gang realizes he still has it, Lionel berates him for not destroying it. "You didn't burn the envelope," he exclaims.

Later on, Miles does exactly that. After being exposed with the real napkin, Miles seizes it and burns it.

The Beatles' "Glass Onion" track plays over the credits.

yacht in knives out

The Beatles song "Glass Onion" plays over the film's credits sequence, a nod to the movie's title.

Johnson previously told Deadline that he'd had the idea for a billionaire living in a glass mansion and just searched for a song with the word "glass" in the title.

"I literally opened the music app on my phone and just searched the word 'glass,' and 'Glass Onion' popped up," he said.

"But I was always surprised, when I was showing the script around, how many people didn't know it was a Beatles song," he continued. "I thought everybody knew 'Glass Onion,' but I guess they don't."

The song is on "The White Album," and references a number of other classic tracks by the British band, including "Strawberry Fields Forever," and "I am the Walrus."

If you think about it, an onion is a perfect metaphor for the film itself.

yacht in knives out

The Glass Onion metaphor gets spoken about a lot in the film for all the layers built into Miles' mansion, with its twisting corridors, numerous rooms, and hidden secrets.

But it also could serve as a reference to the film itself.

The plot has so many different layers, with multiple suspects all with their own motives, secrets, and ways their lives and careers overlap.

Knives out 2's new setting can help it beat the first movie.

Netflix shared a very brief first look at Benoit Blanc in Knives Out 2, and the story's new setting can help it beat the first movie.

Detective Benoit Blanc is coming back to solve a new mystery in Knives Out 2 , and the movie’s setting can help it beat the widely-acclaimed first movie. The mystery genre has seen a variety of stories with different styles – from serious stories to others with touches of horror and even a couple of comedies – which has granted it a lot of success and popularity, and one of the best mystery movies in recent years is Knives Out . Written and directed by Rian Johnson , Knives Out was released in 2019 and was a critical and commercial success, with critics and viewers praising its story, acting, and direction.

When Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer), a wealthy novelist and patriarch of a dysfunctional family passes away under mysterious circumstances, detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) arrives to solve the case, which requires getting to know each and every one of the members of the Thrombey family – and they are not the easiest people you’ll meet. Everyone is a suspect, but with the help of Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas), Harlan’s nurse and close friend, Blanc eventually solves the puzzle and reveals who was truly responsible for Harlan’s death. Knives Out told a full story and brought the arcs of its characters (all of them) to a satisfying end, but its success was such that a sequel was greenlit.

Related: Why Daniel Craig Was Paid So Much For Knives Out Sequels

Simply titled Knives Out 2 , the movie has Rian Johnson back as director, producer (along with Ram Bergman), and writer, but it won’t be a direct sequel to Knives Out . Instead, Knives Out 2 is seen as a standalone movie with Benoit Blanc solving a new mystery, completely separate from the Thrombeys, and in a new setting, similar to Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot novel series. What Knives Out 2 is also doing differently is its release, as it will skip a theatrical release and instead will go straight to Netflix , and the streaming giant has shared the first (although very brief) look at the movie. In its 2022 movie preview trailer , there’s a shot of some of the new characters and Benoit Blanc boarding a boat, and that new setting is enough to help Knives Out 2 beat its predecessor.

Knives Out 2 was shot in Greece, and while plot details haven’t been revealed yet, the brief look in the aforementioned Netflix trailer shows Katherine Hahn, Jessica Henwick, Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom Jr., Madelyn Cline, and Dave Bautista before revealing Daniel Craig as well. The six new characters are boarding a boat in Greece, hinting at a big part of the story taking place in the boat, meaning it will be a more contained mystery than the one at the Thrombey house in the first movie, giving it a more Agatha Christie-like vibe. Even if many parts of the story take place on land, taking Blanc to the other side of the world, to a completely different setting from the somewhat isolated Thrombey mansion , is already of big help to Knives Out 2 , as it makes it unique and sets it apart from the first movie, and helps it avoid repeating the same aspects of its predecessor, which is a common trap for sequels and detective stories.

There’s still a lot to learn about Knives Out 2 , and while the Netflix trailer gave a very brief look at it and it doesn’t reveal much about the plot, it gives enough hints to know that it’s on the right path to be different from the first movie and it has the potential to even beat it. Knives Out 2 doesn’t have an official release date yet, so it’s just a matter of waiting for Netflix to share more information.

The Knives Out Sequel Trades a Gothic Revival Mansion for a Billionaire’s Mediterranean Palace

yacht in knives out

By Rachel Wallace

Glass Onion A Knives Out Mystery stars Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc and hits Netflix on December 23.

Director Rian Johnson’s 2019 whodunit hit  Knives Out took place inside a quintessentially Gothic Revival mansion. Filmed at multiple homes in Massachusetts and on soundstages, it evoked the creepy autumnal aesthetic of many classic murder mystery stories of the past, like  Clue .

The film’s sequel, which hit theaters briefly around Thanksgiving and will be available to stream on Netflix as of December 23, has a vastly different look. Filmed at Villa 20 at Amanzoe, a luxurious resort in Porto Heli, Greece—part of famous  Aman brand ’s high-end, high-design hotels—the film once again centers around eccentric detective Benoit Blanc (played by Daniel Craig ). This time, Blanc is invited to the home of billionaire Miles Bron ( Edward Norton ) as he hosts a murder mystery party for a group of A-list pals who call themselves “the disruptors.” Among the group are movie star Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson), politician Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn), and other such wacky characters.

Edward Norton as Miles, Madelyn Cline as Whiskey, Kathryn Hahn as Claire, Dave Bautista as Duke, Leslie Odom Jr. as Lionel, Jessica Henwick as Peg, Kate Hudson as Birdie, Janelle Monae as Andi, and Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc, in front of a mural featuring Kanye West painted as a Roman-inspired character.

Early in the film, the group pulls up to Bron’s private island aboard a 151-foot  yacht . (Named  Aquarius in real life, the boat is available to charter for $228,000 a week if you’re so inclined—and, fun fact, ship captain Ali Göksoy has a cameo in the film.) As they touch sand, Bron’s over-the-top home is revealed: a futuristic glass atrium plopped atop a sprawling Grecian villa with a grand outdoor staircase. It is his ode to his favorite bar, the Glass Onion, where he began the tech company that made him rich. This motif is also highly symbolic of his vapid personality. “It ties into Miles’s kind of fetishistic interest in himself and the metaphorical fact that when you look into Miles, there's really nothing there,” production designer Rick Heinrichs tells  AD .

Villa 20 “was kind of a modernist take on classic Greek architecture. It had a very lovely indooroutdoor feel to it very...

Villa 20 “was kind of a modernist take on classic Greek architecture. It had a very lovely indoor-outdoor feel to it, very pavilion-like,” says production designer Rick Heinrichs. Here, director Rian Johnson talks to Janelle Monáe on set.

The exterior of the atrium was added in post-production using visual effects, and the team chose this particular vacation villa because it looked to Heinrichs like it could handle the addition of a big glass orb. “That wasn’t something that you could just do on any structure. It’s not that it felt like it was begging for a glass onion stuck on the top of it—but it sort of was, actually. I mean, it turns out that it felt very appropriate that all of these villas ascend to the top pavilion and on top of that was this lovely flower-like structure.” We wonder what the designers of the home— the late  AD100 architect  Edward Tuttle, who was instrumental in creating the design of Aman properties all over the world, and Marios Angelopoulos—would say to this.

“The point of the glass art was trying to do something that was really quintessentially beautiful almost Brancusilike in...

“The point of the glass art was trying to do something that was really quintessentially beautiful, almost Brancusi-like in a certain way. That would also be something that the camera could lens through and distort characters,” says Heinrichs.

The interiors at the villa were used to film guest rooms, but the main living area of Miles’s house was built on a soundstage in Serbia. For this set, Heinrichs and the prop department had to create an array of fine art, including a replica of the Mona Lisa which came courtesy of scenic artist James Gemmill. This job was made all the more difficult when a fire engulfed their prop house in Belgrade, causing a scramble to replace the many resin-glass sculptures that had been made for the film. “We immediately had to switch over to real glasswork and redid a lot of the things,” Heinrichs says. “It’s a movie called the Glass Onion, so we knew we couldn't disappoint in making things look like glass.”

Death and Other Details -- Chapter 2: "Sordid" - Episode 102 -- Imogene must choose a side – between the people who raised her and paid for her luxury vacation… or the man she hates most, who promises to get her the truth. When Rufus interrogates each suspect, he discovers that they're all lying about something, but only one of them is the killer. Rufus Cotesworth (Mandy Patinkin), shown. (Photo by: James Dittiger/Hulu)

yacht in knives out

Late in the Hulu murder mystery “Death and Other Details,” a lawyer who acts as a fixer for a wealthy family describes his career. “At first it’s fantastic — a bunch of people spinning around like the world just came unglued and they’re all looking at you like you’re the only person that can stick it back together again.” But then, he says, you blink and you’re 60. “And they all have families and big, messy, beautiful lives. And you’re the guy with a file full of someone else’s secrets no one wants to sit with at a party.”

Richly written, with both humor and attention to, well, death and other details, the show might be derivative — and yet another outing about the ultra-rich — but it’s so much fun, I’m not sure I care. Mandy Patinkin stars as Rufus Cotesworth, “the world’s greatest detective,” in a 10-episode series that feels like Hulu’s answer to “Knives Out.” The sleuth (with his weird, unplaceable accent) is on a swanky Mediterranean cruise when there’s a murder. The culprit could be any of the pampered guests or exhausted crew, but nobody is quite who they seem. “If you want to solve a crime,” says Rufus, “you must first learn to see through the illusion.”

He’s introduced in a flashback, after a woman is killed in a car bomb, leaving her little girl orphaned. The woman was a family friend of the Colliers, who have more money than they know what to do with, and they take in the child to raise. She’s a wary little girl named Imogen. They’ve also called in Rufus to unravel the mystery of whodunit.

But he can’t. Imogen never forgives him.

Two decades later, she’s a young woman (a terrific Violett Beane) with an immaculate blond bob and a glamorous 1930’s-inspired wardrobe. She’s gorgeous and smart and moves among the rich without being rich herself, which presents its own complications. She’s a guest of the Colliers on this cruise. Rufus is there as well — an unexpected turn of events for her; not so much for him — and after a tense reunion, they become an unlikely duo working to solve the shipboard murder.

From left: Violett Beane and Mandy Patinkin team up to solve a murder mystery on board a luxury ocean liner.

Trains, mansions, cruise ships: They’re terrific settings for a frothy whodunit because they create a finite list of suspects, all of whom are cutting side-eyes at one another. One person has a rap sheet “longer than an overwritten metaphor,” which gives you a sense of the piquant energy here. But a larger conspiracy might be at work, with a shadowy figure, who may not even be on the ship, pulling all the strings.

In the wrong hands, this kind of forever-unraveling narrative — dense with plotting and scheming and secrets to be revealed — can lose steam in a multi-episode series. Not here. I have real admiration for how this stylish pip of a mystery has been crafted by show creators Heidi Cole McAdams and Mike Weiss (both worked on ABC’s sadly truncated “Stumptown” together).

The series is playful with form; at one point, Imogen tries to retrace Rufus’ steps by imagining herself as him; it’s a very funny performance that asks Patinkin to be Imogen-as-Rufus. But overall, the series is grounded in an appreciation for, and a facility with, the genre’s necessary architecture. Certain tropes first need to be established in order to be later tweaked. A new wrinkle is revealed in each episode as the story falls deeper into a spiral of what is going on?! But it has to be compelling and make some kind of sense, and that’s where “Death and Other Details” excels.

Patinkin’s irascible Rufus is a wonderful invention, filled with the actor’s particular combination of intensity and warmth, but he is enough of an enigma himself to make you wonder why he failed to unmask who killed Imogen’s mother. “I never gave up on the truth,” he tells her, “the truth gave up on me.” She can only scoff, because Rufus is slippery and unreliable. Is he a fraud or the real deal? Perhaps a bit of both.

yacht in knives out

The supporting cast is terrific as well, among them Jere Burns as the self-loathing family fixer; Linda Emond, adding another ridiculous accent to the proceedings as the Interpol investigator; “Mad Men” alum Michael Gladis as an obnoxious guest on the cruise who is more complicated and interesting than he initially appears; and Rahul Kohli as the ship’s striving owner.

The setting is all about luxury, even if the scenes on deck have an artificial shot-on-a-soundstage look to them. That’s likely the result of logistical and budgetary compromises but it’s underscored any time two characters go off in a smaller boat and suddenly they are very clearly out on real water with real light.

A century ago, Agatha Christie became a one-woman cottage industry of whodunits that avoided protracted violence in favor of the pleasures of thinking through a problem — using one’s “little gray cells,” as her fictional investigator Hercule Poirot would often put it. In one of her novels, she describes a group of possible suspects as outwardly composed. But within? Their thoughts “ran in a circle like squirrels in a cage,” preoccupied with “What next? Who? Which?”

Those are the questions that keep the engine of a whodunit running. And “Death and Other Details” has plenty of fuel.

“Death and Other Details” — 3.5 stars (out of 4)

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (L-R) Edward Norton, Madelyn Cline, Kathryn Hahn, Dave Bautista, L...

A least one mystery is easily solved.

When Knives Out landed in theaters in November 2019, it was regarded as a quirky oddity. This film was neither in the land of blockbuster superhero sequels and Oscar-bait films vying for awards. It was an old-fashioned murder mystery with an eccentric detective and a room full of suspects. But audiences loved it, and by the close of 2019, the movie had become the year’s surprise hit. So, when is Knives Out 2 coming? And what’s it about?

The sheer popularity of the first Knives Out film brought in $165 million domestically , and in February 2020, Lionsgate was quick to confirm a second film was on the way. But perhaps that confirmation came too quickly. On March 31, 2021, things changed when Netflix announced it had purchased the rights to Knives Out from producers Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman. Moreover, Netflix revealed it would make not one but two sequels. The blockbuster deal confirmed Johnson would return as writer and director, and Daniel Craig would also reprise his role as the Hercule Poirot-like Detective Benoit Blanc. It also turned the nascent film franchise into an all-but-guaranteed streaming hit.

With Knives Out 2 on the way, things are ramping up. Here’s everything known so far about the project:

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Release Date

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery key art

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery premiered at TIFF on Sept. 10, 2022, and then had its red carpet premiere at the London Film Festival a month later. The film will open in select theaters one month before it arrives on Netflix, on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2022, and will run for just one week in theaters before disappearing again. Tickets to this sneak preview are on sale at most local ticket retailers .

Glass Onion will then arrive on Netflix for everyone to stream just in time for the holiday break, on Dec. 23, 2022.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Sneak Peek

On Sept. 24, Netflix released a sneak peek at the new movie that showed off the titular glass onion. In the clip, Lionel (Leslie Odom Jr.), Duke (Dave Bautista), Birdie (Kate Hudson), and Claire (Kathryn Hahn) all successful solve an intricate puzzle sent to them by tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton). The prize? A large glass onion, and an invitation to board Bron’s yacht and solve the mystery of his murder.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Teaser

The official teaser for this movie is an absolute feast. Eight passengers are trapped on an island, and one, it appears, is a murderer. It looks a little like Agatha Christie’s, And Then There Were None, and if it turns out to be similar, fans can be assured of multiple fatalities coming this holiday season.

Some of the details should make fans should sit up and take notice. For example, this is not a family affair, unlike the first Knives Out . There are eight passengers aboard this ship, and it’s not immediately clear who knows who. And the boat is merely a transport — it’s not like Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile . The group heads to an island, and a fancy house, where they have no escape.

Previously, the first mini teaser for the Knives Out sequel arrived on June 13, 2022. Although it contained no footage of the new film, it did confirm the sequel’s title, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery .

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Cast

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022). (L-R) Kathryn Hahn as Claire, Madelyn Cline as Whiskey, Ed...

As previously noted, Daniel Craig’s Detective Benoit Blanc and his Foghorn Leghorn accent are set to return for both films. Also, as confirmed at the London Film Festival, viewers will catch a glimpse of his boyfriend , who is apparently as secret A-list cameo.

But the movie’s greatness came from the ensemble cast that surrounded him, with luminaries like Don Johnson, Jamie Lee Curtis, and the late Christopher Plummer. It also starred Marvel hero Chris Evans in a sweater , which became one of the film’s iconic images.

But with each successive film being a completely new case, that means only Craig will probably return. But not to worry about the new ensemble. Knives Out 2 is already finding new Marvel stars to help fill the roster. On May 10, 2021, Guardians of the Galaxy’s Dave Bautista was the first significant name to join the new cast in an as-yet-undisclosed role. It is a re-team for Bautista and Craig, who were last seen together in the James Bond movie Spectre. There’s no word yet about what sort of knitwear Bautista’s character wears, but fans know he’s got an oversized sweater to fill.

And there’s at least one more sweater-worthy former Marvel star on the roster. On May 11, Deadline followed up with the reveal that Edward Norton is also joining the cast .

But wait, there’s more! Janelle Monae is also joining the party , according to Variety . The Hollywood Reporter also added Leslie Odom Jr. to the list of cast members joining the film. And in actors from one Netflix project shifting to another, actor Madelyn Cline of Outer Banks fame also signed on to be part of the ensemble .

And just when fans thought the cast couldn’t top that, Deadline reported Kathryn Hahn was also joining the crew . (I don’t know about you, but if Daniel Craig doesn’t break into “ Agatha All Along ,” I will be highly disappointed.) Deadline also reported Kate Hudson will be joining the cast as well . It will be a reunion of sorts for her and Hahn, who played BFFs back in the day in How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days . Perhaps this will be How To Murder Someone In 10 Days ? It depends on which of these cast members plays the one who turns up dead.

Finally, on June 15, 2021, Netflix revealed yet another franchise player as part of the new film: Jessica Henwick, who is known on HBO for Game of Thrones , Netflix for Iron Fist , and on the big screen in Star Wars: The Last Jedi . According to Deadline , the actor (who is also the new lead in The Matrix 4 ) “rounds out” the cast for the film, suggesting that perhaps there are limits in stuffing all of Hollywood into one two-hour mystery.

Since then, a few spoiler-free reviews have revealed a couple of surprises, including cameos by Ethan Hawke , Joseph Gordon-Levitt , Jackie Hoffman, and the late Stephen Sondheim in his last on-screen appearance.

The main thing viewers know about the new Knives Out films is they won’t be bringing back the Thrombeys and the Drysdales. Like any good old-school murder mystery series, each movie will have a standalone case featuring a brand-new, high-profile ensemble. Considering the Glass Onion cast is stacked, it’s doubtful anyone will miss the characters from the first film.

Here’s the logline for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery , which, TBH, doesn’t give much away: “In the follow-up to Rian Johnson’s Knives Out , Detective Benoit Blanc travels to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery involving a new cast of colorful suspects.”

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Characters

Though the plot is still being kept under wraps, Glass Onion ’s debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022, does mean fans know who the characters are and who plays who. Here’s a rundown.

  • Edward Norton plays Miles Bron: A tech billionaire
  • Leslie Odom Jr. is Lionel Toussaint: A scientist who works for Miles
  • Janelle Monáe plays Cassandra “Andi” Brand: Miles’ ex-business partner
  • Kathryn Hahn is Claire Debella: A Connecticut governor running for Senate
  • Dave Bautista plays Duke Cody: A YouTube star and men’s rights activist
  • Madelyn Cline is Whiskey: Duke’s girlfriend and assistant
  • Kate Hudson is Birdie Jay: A supermodel turned fashion designer
  • Jessica Henwick is Peg: Birdie’s assistant

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Filming

Along with the announcement that two sequels were underway, Netflix revealed filming was slated to start at the end of June 2021 in Greece . Director Rian Johnson celebrated the beginning of filming with a tweet, thanking the local population for letting him do “all this murdering” on their shores.

“All this murdering?” Could Knives Out 2 have... multiple victims?

Leslie Odom Jr. hinted the sequel would be bigger and better than the first film. “‘Suspect everyone’ is what I can tell you. It’s going to be fun,” he said to ET. “ I think that the first movie... the success was unexpected, the Oscar nomination certainly, and people really took to it. So we want to up the ante and deliver something exciting and surprising for the fans.”

Filming went quickly on the six-week shoot, wrapping at the end of July 2021 .

The original Knives Out film is streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Glass Onion will arrive on streaming in December 2022. Knives Out 3 does not yet have a release date.

M. Emmet Walsh, ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘Knives Out’ actor, dead at 88

M. Emmet Walsh, the character actor known for his roles in films such as “Blade Runner” and “Knives Out,” has died. He was 88.

Walsh’s longtime manager, Sandy Joseph, confirmed to The Post that Walsh died Tuesday of cardiac arrest at Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, Vermont.

When asked about his career, Walsh said, per Joseph’s release, “I approach each job thinking it might be my last so it better be the best work possible. I want to be remembered as a working actor. I’m being paid for what I’d do for nothing.”

“Walsh’s tremendous body of work includes 119 feature films and more than 250 television productions,” the release added.

Walsh’s career spanned six decades, working in theater, TV and film. His first movie, “Alice’s Restaurant,” came out in 1969.

He went on to star alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest stars throughout the ’70s and ’80s, including Ryan O’Neal and Barbra Streisand (1972’s “What’s Up, Doc?”), Paul Newman (1977’s “Slap Shot”), Dustin Hoffman (1970’s “Little Big Man” and 1978’s “Straight Time”), Steve Martin (1979’s “The Jerk”), Harrison Ford (1982’s “Blade Runner”) and Frances McDormand (1984’s “Blood Simple”).

In 1997, he starred alongside Dermot Mulroney, Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz in “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and with Hoffman again in 2005’s “Racing Stripes.”

Walsh most recently appeared alongside Daniel Craig in “Knives Out” in 2019.

His TV credits include “The Righteous Gemstones,” “Sneaky Pete” and “The Mind of the Married Man,” as well as guest roles on “Frasier,” “Home Improvement,” “The X-Files,” “NYPD Blue,” “Army Wives,” “Damages,” “McMillan & Wife,” “The Twilight Zone,” “The Bob Newhart Show,” “The Rockford Files” and “The Waltons.”

“I don’t want to play the same type of character 10 times,” Walsh  told USA Today  in 2015. “I want to be a garbage collector in one film and a governor in the next.

“I got a degree in business administration and marketing,” he said of attending Clarkson University in New York. “That background taught me to live modestly when you’re working so you can survive on your savings when things aren’t going so well. I’ve had actor friends who made 10 times the money I did, but they have nothing now. I knew what to do with a dollar.”

Walsh is survived by his niece Meagan Walsh, nephew Kevin Walsh (Renee) and grandnephews Emmet and Elliot.

M Emmet Walsh, Blade Runner, Blood Simple and Knives Out actor, dies aged 88

Character actor, who appeared in more than 220 roles across seven decades, died in Vermont on Tuesday

M Emmet Walsh, the character actor who appeared in more than 220 film and television roles including Blade Runner, Knives Out and the Coen brothers’ films Blood Simple and Raising Arizona, has died aged 88.

Walsh’s manager, Sandy Joseph, confirmed to the industry publication Variety that he had died Tuesday in Vermont.

Born in New York in 1935 and raised in Vermont, Walsh landed his first uncredited film role – an extra in Midnight Cowboy – and his first credited film role in Alice’s Restaurant, both in 1969.

He played a sportswriter in the Paul Newman sports comedy Slap Shot (1977), Dustin Hoffman’s parole officer in Straight Time (1978), the sniper hunting down Steve Martin in The Jerk (1979), and the LAPD boss who brings Harrison Ford out of retirement in Blade Runner (1982).

Walsh told the Hollywood Reporter in 2017 that Blade Runner was the film he was asked about the most, saying that after he saw the finished product: “We didn’t know what to say or to think or do! We didn’t know what in the hell we had done! The only one who seemed to get it was Ridley.”

With his dry delivery and hangdog face, he was known for his ability to take on both menacing and comedic roles – and sometimes both at the same time, such as Loren Visser, the double-crossing private detective in the Coen brothers’ 1984 feature debut, Blood Simple.

The famed film critic Roger Ebert praised Walsh as a “poet of sleaze” for his performance and came up with the “Stanton-Walsh Rule”: “no movie featuring either Harry Dean Stanton or M Emmet Walsh in a supporting role can be altogether bad”.

“Every time, you try to figure something individual that works for the character. If you’re playing a villain, you don’t play villain,” Walsh told the Guardian about Blood Simple in 2017 , adding: “Visser doesn’t think of himself as particularly bad or evil. He’s on the edge of what’s legal, but he’s having a lot of fun with all that.”

He also played small roles in Fletch (1985) and the horror flick Critters (1986), as well as Nicolas Cage’s chatty co-worker in Raising Arizona (1987), John Lithgow’s father in Harry and the Hendersons (1987), and Michael Keaton’s sponsor in Clean and Sober (1988). He also appeared in Romeo + Juliet (1996), My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997), The Iron Giant (1999), Calvary (2014) and Knives Out (2019).

“I have more fun playing 10 different people than I do playing the same person 10 different times,” he once told the Houston Chronicle. “One time it’s a garbage collector, and the next time it’s the president of Princeton.”

His final role was in the 2024 western Outlaw Posse alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Cedric the Entertainer.

Over seven decades of television, Walsh appeared in shows including Starsky and Hutch, Frasier, The Twilight Zone, The X-Files, Home Improvement and Adventure Time. One of his last roles was as Grandaddy Roy in The Righteous Gemstones.

“It’s a good life being a character actor,” he once told the Orange County Register. “I’ve been around stardom. I’ve been around Redford and Hoffman, and it’s scary. That drive for stardom is like the greyhounds chasing the mechanical rabbit. By the time he catches him, he’s too tired to run anymore, and you’ve got to shoot him.”
