Clarence Thomas Took Free Yacht Trip to Russia, Chopper Flight to Putin’s Hometown: Dems

The allegedly secret gifts were disclosed in a letter from two Democratic senators that accused Thomas of potentially committing tax fraud.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has been accused of not disclosing a yacht trip to Russia and a private helicopter flight to a palace in President Vladimir Putin’s hometown, among a slew of other gifts and loans from businessman Harlan Crow .

Buried on page 14 of a letter that two Democratic senators sent to Attorney General Merrick Garland on Tuesday, in which they urged Garland to appoint a special counsel to probe Thomas, was an astonishing list of dozens of “likely undisclosed gifts and income” from Crow, Crow’s affiliated companies, and “other donors.”

In the letter, Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) said Thomas, one of the court’s staunchly conservative justices , even may have committed tax fraud and violated other federal laws by “secretly” accepting the gifts and income potentially worth millions.

“The Senate is not a prosecutorial body, and the Supreme Court has no fact-finding function of its own, making the executive role all the more important if there is ever to be any complete determination of the facts,” reads the letter requesting the appointment of a special prosecutor. 

“We do not make this request lightly,” said the letter. 

The list of potentially secret gifts also includes a loan of more than $267,000 provided by Thomas’ close friend Anthony Welters, the yacht trip to Russia from the Baltics, and the helicopter ride to Yusupov Palace in St. Petersburg. ProPublica first reported last year on the existence of extensive undisclosed gifts and lavish trips from Crow.

Additionally, Justice Thomas is accused of not disclosing tuitions for his grandnephew, free lodging, real estate transactions, and home renovations. The action escalates Democratic senators’ efforts to hold Thomas accountable for perceived ethics controversies. 

According to the senators, Thomas’ conduct could violate the Ethics in Government Act, which requires officials like Supreme Court justices to file annual reports disclosing gifts and income accepted from outside sources.

“It is a crime,” reads the report, “To knowingly and willfully fail to file or report such information.”

Since 2023, two Senate committees have been looking into the 1991 loan from Welters that was connected to Thomas’ purchase of a luxury motor home. Welters previously responded to a New York Times request for comment on the loan only to say that it was “satisfied.”

Thomas, for his part, belatedly disclosed some—but not all—gifts from Crow this year and has defended the gifts as “personal hospitality” from some of his and his wife’s “dearest friends.”

“The evidence assembled thus far plainly suggests that Justice Thomas has committed numerous willful violations of federal ethics and false-statement laws and raises significant questions about whether he and his wealthy benefactors have,” Whitehouse and Wyden wrote.

Vote no on second Kittery Point Yacht Club dock in New Castle: Letters

Speak out regarding proposed dock in new castle july 10.

July 8 — To the Editor:

Regarding the Kittery Point Yacht Club (KPYC) proposal to build a dock in the back channel off Goat Island in New Castle :

Evaluation of the five "criteria points" is required by state law, not by the town. One of these is "substantial justice," which is a comparison of public and private benefits and detriments.  There has been much public testimony about a public benefit of inexpensive sailing instruction for area youths, but almost none about possible detrimentsto members of the public who use unpowered watercraft (kayaks, paddleboards, canoes) in the vicinity of the proposed dock.  There is a large public parking and launch site adjacent to the site of the proposed dock.

The third and likely final public hearing on this proposal will be on Wednesday, July 10, at 7 p.m. in the Macomber Room above the public library at 301 Wentworth Road in New Castle.  By law, anybody who can demonstrate that they would be affected by this proposal must be allowed to testify.  In order to make a valid and legal decision, the Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA) needs to hear from those who would be required to share the area with this large dock.

July 6 — To the Editor:

Open letter to New Castle Zoning Board members:

I would like to communicate my strong opposition to the KPYC request for a second dock. Approval of this request will impact the town of New Castle and surrounding communities for generations to come. In my opinion, the proposed location would have a significant negative impact to the town residents and general public on a number of levels.

∎ This dock would effectively ruin the picturesque sight line along the causeway and back channel.

∎ Approval will result in legal exposure for the Zoning Board and New Castle related to future requests from residents and commercial properties for a second dock.

∎ KPYC contends the primary beneficiary will be children and not necessarily general use for club members which is misleading and hard to believe.

∎ Second dock request is not based on hardship and will benefit only members of a private club and paying students.

∎ Public access (kayaks, paddle boards , etc)  between the shore and islands will be impacted especially at low tide.

∎ Any increase in cars parking and foot traffic at that specific spot of the causeway would be especially dangerous.

Additionally, the Zoning Board should be aware that there is widespread opposition to this KPYC request among town residents. It is my hope that board members are impartial and vote independent of personal relationships with KPYC membership. Your vote should be for the good of the town and should adhere to town zoning regulations.  Please vote no. Thank you.

July 4 — To the Editor:

I am soon to be 83 years old. I may not be as astute as I once was and my memory is sadly lacking at times.

However, I can still see clearly when our democracy is in grave, grave danger.

Instead of focusing on Biden’s very poor performance on the debate stage opposite an opponent streaming a litany of lies, let’s consider what our very old president has managed to accomplish.

At my age, I can still crunch the numbers. Trump’s tax cuts for the rich and corporations cost $4.8 trillion, which is more than the $4.3 trillion cost of Biden’s Infrastructure Act, Inflation Reduction Act, Chips Act, expanding health care benefits to veterans, and student debt forgiveness — all directed at the common man and eventually resulting in relieving close to $2 trillion in debt.

Even if Biden’s health wanes and he cannot continue at the same pace, he will have a cabinet and staff to take directions and be able to take advantage of his integrity and wisdom and experience from having served so long.

Instead of honing in on one issue such as abortion, immigration, childcare, age or inflation, let us consider the big picture. We are about to lose our democracy amid all this hatred and division created by Trump and now backed up by the Supreme Court!

We now face the same choice as did our founding fathers: democracy or tyranny.

I know which I choose for us and for our heirs.

Reflections on the color red and Independence Day

July 4 — To The Editor:

When one turns on the TV for morning news on Independence Day, one doesn’t anticipate the first headline she sees to be: “The Thirtieth Anniversary of Schindler’s List.” That, for me, prompted an instant recall of the little girl in her red coat brilliantly situated in an otherwise black and white frame of Steven Spielberg’s Academy Award winning film adaptation of the 1982 book by Thomas Keneally.

Red! Research says, “the girl in the red coat is a symbol of individuality and innocence, representing the needlessness of war.” Perhaps we all should be adding red to our wardrobes. Roses are red and romantic along with valentines, fire engines are red and protective, bulls are drawn to red when taunted by a bull fighter, blood was shed on this day leading to our independence and following the pleasures of red lobsters and strawberry shortcake today, the skies will be red coast-to-coast after dark in celebration.

It’s prescient to give more thought to the color red on this Independence Day. The red stripes on the American flag are symbolic of hardiness and valor. That represents our past for which we can be very proud and set off fireworks but the future depends upon us to live up to those symbols and to honor the people who fought and died for our freedom.

For the good of the nation, Biden should step aside

We love you, Joe. Yours has been a stunningly successful administration. The accomplishments over these four years are way too numerous to count.  It is a shame that your presidency is not broadly recognized as such, but it will be by the historians ... if you step aside now.

I am seeing the thunderous 10-minute standing ovation for you at next month's Democratic convention, during your finest hour, conducting your final patriotic act, and with that megawatt smile on your face — when you step aside from your campaign and endorse the new nominee, be it Gretchen Whitmer, Kamala Harris or somebody else.  We will emerge from the convention excited and unified and ready to take it to the Republican candidate, Donald Trump, a serial liar, a traitor, a rapist, a criminal, and a failed ex-president, in short, the most vile human being one could imagine.

On the other hand, if you do not step away now, the convention will be a very uncomfortable affair. You will most likely lose. Your legacy will be that of a man who refused to put aside his own ambition and turned the country over to a sociopath who has no respect for our democratic system.  Why would you do that?  

This challenge is not about you.  Our objective is clear:  we must select the standard bearer with the greatest chance of defeating Trump. He is widely despised and he is a weak candidate. I am fully confident that whoever else we choose will win.

I am calling on our Democratic leaders, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, Sen. Maggie Hassan, Rep. Chris Pappas, and Rep. Annie Kuster to reach out to President Biden and tell him that he needs to end his campaign now for the good of the nation.

(Of course, if Biden does stay in the race, we must work for him and vote for him, but many will find it difficult to do so with enthusiasm.)

Homeless people sleeping outdoors are not 'camping'

July 5 — To the Editor:

The euphemism of banning “camping” in public spaces is a twisted response to the crisis of homelessness.

Criminalizing homeless people may immediately resolve an internal moral dilemma of witnessing people suffering and feeling discomfort at the sight.

Contrasting one’s own security, comfort and safety with a person who is spiraling out of control having lost the basic foundations of survival is indeed startling.

Criminalizing homelessness shifts the reality of their plight from sad to bad. Empathy can feel overwhelming. Criminalizing these people makes them less human, deserving scorn for their “failings." By removing homeless people from one’s visual field might offer immediate relief but does nothing to resolve the problem.

Homelessness is not a lifestyle or a “choice." Finding a space to collapse after a day of feeling hungry, overwhelmed, and helpless is not camping but survival.

Homelessness is a growing problem as rent and housing becomes prohibitively expensive and personal problems whether medical, limited resources of fixed incomes, mental illness, substance use disorders and other maladies overwhelm coping capacities.

Our response to homelessness is a litmus test of our moral fiber as a community to our neighbors who are suffering.Owning an address is a fundamental pillar of one’s identity. Providing a roof over people’s heads is a critical first step in helping them reconstruct their lives back to normalcy. Compassion rather than condemnation is the ultimate engine to find housing solutions and other interventions for the homeless.
