Newport 33 is a 33 ′ 0 ″ / 10.1 m monohull sailboat designed by Gary Mull and built by Capital Yachts Corp. between 1971 and 1996.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

It is said that the NEWPORT 33 is a stretched version of the NEWPORT 30. Shallow draft version: 4.00’ / 1.22m

(The following although written some years ago, gives some idea of the character of the founders of Capital Yachts.)

Capital yachts corporation had its origin in 1971, when it current owners jon williams and bill smith bought only the tooling of the newport fleet from elgin national industries, (a new york based firm). together, with the aid of two top naval architects, gary mull and cuthbertson and cassian c & c), they formed a new and updated fleet of newport sailboats which are presently manufactured at their privately owned plant in harbor city, california. prior to this, bill and jon had an excellent foundation for manufacturing sailboats, both had been selling sailboats as retail dealers for the past nine years in the greater santa monica bay area. they were well versed in their field. each did his own racing, commissioning, and warranty repair as a retail dealer. they were both sailing and selling newport sailboats. elgin national industries elected to withdraw from sailboat manufacturing, for reasons of their own. "it is easy to build an expensive boat but few people are willing to pay the price." and those that do often times mislead by the fancy ad or brochure they have read. jon and bill saw a real need for a quality line of sailboats with hand laid hulls and decks, lead keels, heavy duty rigging and hardware, and interior designs for extended blue water sailing at a low, fair market price. (it is a known fact that many newport owners have sold their boats for more than they originally paid for them — new and used.) in the beginning the odds were heavily against them, but due to their great desire and vast experience and with the aid of their banker, sandy greenberg, they entered into the sailboat manufacturing business. as it turned out, all of their production is presold, with a large and steady backlog. the newport fleet's impressive record of race wins and its sizable list of enthusiastic owners tells the rest of capital yachts' history..

Newport 28/28 II

While initially there were questions about quality, the 28 is a good entry-level cruiser-racer for those on a budget..

The Newport 28 was one of the longer-lived small production cruising boats, having been in production from 1974 through 1987. Almost 1,000 of the C&C-designed boats were built by Capital Yachts of Harbor City, California.

Newport 28/28 II

There is a strong family resemblance between the Newport 28 and other C&C designs of the same period. In addition to the Newport 28, Capital built the Newport 41, another mid-1970s C&C design. The styling of both boats is characterized by the sweeping attractive sheerlines for which C&C is justifiably known.

As with any boat whose production run spanned more than a decade, many changes were made in the Newport 28, both outside and inside, over the years. The original scimitar-shaped keel and rudder gave way to more modern high aspect ratio appendages with 1983 models, increasing draft from 4′ 6″ to 5′ 2″. A shoal draft version drawing 4′ was optional, but

less popular than the deep-keel boat. Versions with the modern keel are designated Newport 28-II.

Sailing Performance

The Newport 28 has a tall, high aspect ratio masthead rig. The newer deep keel models are about six seconds per mile faster than the original version of the boat, which typically sails with a PHRF rating of 192. This is comparable to other cruiser-racers of the same size.

Despite a fairly high ballast/displacement ratio, owners report that the boat is tender. This is due in part to the fairly round midship section, and in part to the fact that few 28′ boats are really very stiff.

Racing in Newport 28s is quite keen in some areas, particularly on the West Coast, where there are large fleets that race both as one-designs and under PHRF. The boat is a competitive PHRF racer, and enough boats have been rated so that its handicap appears fair. This means you are likely to get a rating based on the boat’s performance, not on your own sailing ability.

Most owners report that the boat is very well balanced. This is typical of C&C designs, which usually have fairly small mainsails. With a large foretriangle and a small mainsail, it may be necessary to rake the mast aft slightly to give the boat a little weather helm. It’s far easier to add weather helm than to reduce it.

Construction

Make no mistake about it, the Newport 28 is a boat built to a price. A common complaint by owners is mediocre fitting of woodwork, leaking hull-to-deck joint, cockpit drains that are too small, plastic valves on through hull fittings, inadequate backing plates for hardware—in short, the entire litany of problems associated with boats built to be low in price.

One owner who races his boat hard noticed a large crack in the hull molding aft of the primary sheet winches, and discovered that he could see daylight through it. Apparently, the hull had been cracked in removing it from the mold, and the cracked patched over with auto body filler. This was on a new boat. The factory made good on that one.

Why would so many people buy a boat that apparently has a history of minor construction flaws and mediocre quality control?

The answer, according to owners, is that the basic styling, accommodations, and performance are better than other boats of the same size and type, making up for other shortcomings. When you buy a Chevrolet you know in advance that it isn’t going to be built like a Mercedes.

The interior is one factor that many owners report is a major influence in their decision to buy a Newport 28. With a waterline length of 23′ 6″, there’s a lot of interior for a 28′ boat.

Despite the fairly low freeboard and pronounced concave sheer, there is just over 6′ of headroom on centerline over the main cabin. The pronounced camber of the main cabintop keeps the deckhouse profile low, but at the expense of headroom, which diminishes very quickly away from the centerline. Fortunately, on a boat this small you’re almost always walking near the centerline.

There have been three basic interior arrangements over the years: galley along the starboard side of the main cabin, galley aft on the port side, and galley aft on the starboard side. On later models, only the two aft galley configurations were available. The galley aft on starboard side is the only layout that offers a stove with oven, due to the setup of the main cabin settees.

Unfortunately, this galley arangement required cutting away the starboard main bulkhead beneath the chainplates to make the starboard settee long enough for sleeping, which in our opinion is a structural compromise.

Newport 28/28 II

Since there are four other berths in the boat—two forward, the port settee, and a quarterberth—using the starboard settee as a berth isn’t necessary with anything less than a full crew. For family cruising, it is likely that at least one member of the crew would be short enough to use the starboard settee even without the foot extension.

Originally, the boat was equipped with the Atomic Four gasoline inboard, a standard engine in most auxiliaries until the proliferation of diesel power in the early 1980s. Diesel power was optional until the introduction of the 28-II model.

Some boats have Yanmar diesels, others Universal. It took the builder a while to decide which diesel engine to use, as owners report engines ranging in horsepower from 11 to 18. To most owners, there appears to be little difference in performance between diesel engines of various sizes. All of the Universal diesels should be adequate for the boat, and the Atomic Four is far more power than she needs.

Obviously, the diesel engine is a big plus when shopping for a used boat. Retrofitting a diesel on a gas-powered boat of this size is usually more expense than can be justified unless you’re planning to keep the boat for a long time.

Access to the engine for service varies from awful to good, depending on the model year. Fortunately, newer models have better access from the interior as well as a flush hatch in the cockpit sole directly over the engine.

Buying A Used Boat

Because so many owner complaints center on fairly mediocre construction detailing, a used boat should be carefully surveyed before purchase. Particular attention should be paid to structural details of the hull-to-deck joint, attachment of bulkheads, and mounting of deck hardware.

Obviously, a later model boat with a diesel engine is more desirable than an older boat with a gas engine. We would also consider the 28-II version with updated keel and rudder to be more desirable than the earlier design.

Because of the large number of Newport 28s built, at any given time there are a number of boats on the market. This means you should be able to find the combination of ingredients you’re looking for for in age, power plant, keel, and interior layouts—especially if you’re shopping on the West Coast.

It would be a good idea to look at all three interior arrangements before making a decision, although if you opt for a newer boat your choice will be between the two aft galley interiors.

Some of the boats have been seriously upgraded by owners, including such things as larger cockpit drains and higher quality hull hardware.

We would be wary about any boat that showed a lot of inexpert do-it-yourself characterisitics, such as caulking along the hull-to-deck joint, around the ports, or around the chainplates.

Although a tiller is standard, a fair number of boats have been equipped with wheel steering, either as an original option or as a retrofit.

The steering pedestal takes up far less room than the tiller, but it does require that the helmsman sit all the way in the back of the boat. While this arrangement keeps the cockpit less crowded for racing, it also puts all the helmsman’s weight at the aft end of the boat—not a good place for it.

In addition, the helmsman on a wheel-steered boat cannot reach either the mainsheet or the jib sheets, a serious shortcoming. He furthermore has trouble hiding from rain and spray under a companionway dodger.

Life for the helmsman on a wheel-steered Newport 28 will be a lonely one. Wheel steering, being hardly necessary on a boat this size, is hardly desirable on the Newport 28.

The Newport 28 is a good entry-level cruiser-racer for someone wanting a reasonable combination of accommodations and performance, as long as you’re not too persnickety about details. It would be a reasonable compromise for someone who likes more traditional appearance in a modern boat, but doesn’t have the money to spend for a higher-quality boat of the same size and type, such as a Sabre 28.

1986 Hans Christian HANSA 33 CUTTER

1986 Hans Christian HANSA 33 CUTTER

1986 Hans Christian HANSA 33 CUTTER This cutter is from the highly respected Taiwan yard of the Hansa Yacht and Shifbau.  A  Two owner boat, that was originally purchased to run in the Pacific Cup race to Hawaii. The first owner was a top rate sailor and craftsman. After the race, which it finished second, the boat had low use and was shipped from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe where it could only be used about 4 months out of the year. It was later shipped to Newport beach and sold to the current owner. Both owners have showed exceptional maintenance programs on this yacht. Many years in fresh water kept the bottom free of any osmotic problems, and none are noted in the last survey.  Currently, the yacht is moored in Marina Del Ray with a assumable slip. The boat is equipped with Raymarine new touch screen 48 mile  radar which includes all functions available. Also has AIS and full seatalk system plus cockpit repeaters. This system allows full system access by an I pad so interior repeater is not required. All other electronics are in top shape. A highly custom Iverson dodger with strata glass was aided in the last year. Check the photo section for this, it is a beauty with all the rails needed to make the yacht safe. A double purchase control has been added to the traveler for easy adjustment, and the sail main sheet is set at the stern of the yacht. There are so many custom features, you will need to see the boat to appreciate her. So let me know when you would like to see it.     The interior is in very fine condition and well kept at all times. The mast has been reconditioned in the last year and new hard track and a stack pack with new lazy Jacks to make main sail furling a easy chore. All winches have been reworked and lubricated, the rig is a tall rig that is 9 foot higher than the normal 33 to allow more speed and performance. The sails were custom made for the boat in San Francisco, and the standard sails that came with the boat are still available as a second backup set. The sails on the boat now show little use.  This boat shows very well and the varnish is perfect. The engine has been maintained by one of the top mechanics in the Southern California area, and no money has been spared to keep the yacht in as close to Bristol condition as can be expected of a 28 year old vessel.  Prepare to be impressed when you see this boat in person. We are well aware that the Hans Christian is not for everyone, and we are happy that it is not. This boat needs a sailor that loves boats and understands the the cost of a yacht that can take you anywhere in the world needs proper maintenance that the coastal yachts that have little maintenance and not to much character.  Call soon if you meet the above criteria. Please, serious buyers only.

Beautiful, generously equipped and meticulously cared for freshwater J46 owned by senior couple. Used only for day sailing and minimal light cruising in northern Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Lake Charlevoix for only 12 four month seasons (was not launched in 2012 and 2013). Always kept in inside heated storage when not in the water for the four month summer season. It is in pristine condition. J/46 may be the only investment grade sailing yacht of its size not requiring professional crew to sail at designed performance levels…..or to maintain. Two people can easily manage her upwind and down to achieve the same 8 knot passage-making speeds under sail that is possible when motoring with 76hp diesel auxiliary. The joy of sailing the perfect boat is, after all, a goal we believe every owner ultimately seeks. To insure that good sailing days are spent sailing rather than scrubbing and varnishing, J/46 is designed to be virtually maintenance-free. Helped by new materials and techniques, they evolve from the joint experiences of designer, builder and owners to become state-of-the-art. J/46 is such a vessel, inheriting the proven hull shape of the J/44, an offshore blue water classic, having won the Fastnet, Sydney-Hobart, NYYC Queen’s Cup and Trans-Atlantic races. J/44 is the only Class of yacht ever to be given its own class start by the Cruising Club of America in the Newport-Bermuda Race. To create the J/46, a foot of sailing length is added for speed; a transom swim/boarding platform for convenience; a carbon fiber mast and low VCG 6.2’ shoal draft keel for more stability; and a resin-infused, composite hull and deck for greater strength. Below decks, the choice was clear, use the same beautifully varnished cherry or teak joiner work, entertainment center and styling so highly acclaimed in our deluxe J/160. J/46 is a maxi-Ditch yacht, the tallest yacht that can fit under the bridges of the Intra-Coastal WWaterway. Yet she is non-intimidating. A high length-to-beam ratio on the waterline of this sea-kindly yacht significantly improves tracking offshore in large waves and makes sail plan balance less critical. J/46 sails with either main or jib only, always responding predictably to a light touch on the helm. Sail power with good stability allows cruising with working jib rather than large genoa. That’s less work for the crew and improved visibility for the person on the helm. J Boats’ unique spinnaker system makes downwind sailing possible for two. A modern asymmetric spinnaker attaches to the top of the anchor roller, is contained within a cockpit-controlled snuffer, and is stored, ready-to-use, in the bow locker. The spinnaker is hoisted to the masthead, 2’ above the headstay intersect, leaving space for the snuffer to shift on a jibe. Jibing is then easy. One simply lets off one spinnaker sheet and pulls in the other.

1997 Sea Ray SUNDANCER 300

1997 Sea Ray SUNDANCER 300

Morris Plains, New Jersey

1997 Sea Ray SUNDANCER 300 This nicely kept 1997 SeaRay 300 soft top cruiser with twin 5.7 EFI Mercruisers with V drives is located in Weehawken, NJ. The 300 Sundancer offers good space both inside and out for the whole gang. A double helm bench seat makes cruising a lot more comfortable and the lower cockpit area can easily be turned into a large sun pad with filler cushions; great for sun lovers or kids to play on. Down below the cabin offers a good flow and plenty of light with four portlights and three deck hatches. An ultra leather lounge is directly across a galley complete with refrigerator, large sink, microwave, two-burner cooktop, and good storage. The 300 has sleeping accommodations for six with a forward V-berth, aft cabin, and dinette that easily converts into a double berth. Great looks and styling are obvious with the 300 Sundancer. Her reverse sheer line and seamless arch give her a flare of European sophistication. She’s got a wave cutting deep-V design, a 21-degree deadrise, and a beam of 10’8” giving her a comfortable dry and stable ride without compromising performance The 300 Sundancer has a solid and stable ride due in part to her overall length of 33’1” , beam of 10’8”, and her dry weight of 10,200 pounds. The hull tracks well through the turns and accelerates quickly. The steering is responsive and smooth due in part to the deep-V design of the hull. She’s a very nimble craft at high speed and easy to handle in many different docking situations. This SeaRay 300 is a terrific family cruiser whether you a embarking upon a family weekend in the Hamptons, or cruising to the beach for the day, or seeing the sights in Newport. There is a reason why Sea Ray in general and the Sundancer model in general has been so very successful. All in all Sea Ray has once again packed a world of comfort and convenience into a well designed family boat that can make a day on the water more enjoyable or a weekend away an adventure

Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race

N2E: Not just another race; it's sailing history and the history of sailing all in one

In 1947, founding members of the Newport Ocean Sailing Association (NOSA) set out to promote the sport of ocean racing, seamanship and the development of sailing activities in Southern California by hosting races for all those interested and decided to help fund junior programs and sponsor accomplished amateurs to support that mission.

NOSA members called the first race the Governor’s Cup. An invitation to Governor Earl Warren, inviting him to present the first trophy in the small fishing village of Ensenada, Mexico, was sent via telegraph.

These were the years just after the war. Couples who launched the baby boom generation were moving into the state and looking for homes, at an average cost of $7,700. The bikini was gaining popularity, as was television. A gallon of gas was 16 cents. The fastest and most modern sailboats had wooden hulls and flew natural-fiber sails.

One hundred and seventeen boats paid $22.50 to register for that just-for-fun race April 23, 1948. Newport Harbor Yacht Club kindly hosted. Thanks to winds estimated to have blown at a swift 25–35 knots, only 65 boats finished the 125-nautical mile contest.

It was a grand kick-off to a race that is not historically known for blustery winds. In the years that followed, the renamed Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race (N2E) became an event with a full and rich history documented by names etched onto the sides of four dozen trophies. More significantly, it’s the story of an ever-changing experience that exceeded goals set by its founders; an ongoing narrative of mankind’s quest to pit sailboat against competitors and nature in the quest of breaking records or simply finishing. But it’s also an ongoing record of innovation and the rise of technology in sailing.

Thanks to the handicap system however, the boat that is first to finish, thereby winning for Best Elapsed time, might not win or even place in its class. Alternately, a cruising boat that sails beyond expectations could score the Best Corrected Time All Boats; winning the Tommy Bahama Trophy offered since 2004. It is kind of like in 2009 when Sojourn , a Catalina 30 in PHRF K won Best Corrected Time despite finishing 10 hours behind record-breaker Magnitude 80 and 12 hours behind Best Elapsed Time winner Loe Real . Each year, N2E is really anyone’s race.

Through the years, it is the just-for-fun sailors who repeatedly show up with their friends in search of adventure; a challenge with a spirit of competition who will always be the heart and soul of N2E.

Every name on every trophy is significant. And some of the most recognizable names in the sailing world are etched onto the highly coveted trophies; those for Best Elapsed Time, Best Corrected Time and many others for those scoring the fastest times in more than 45 classes and categories.

Arguably, the winningest and most famous sailor of the race is America's Cup skipper, Dennis Conner. Conner and crew won best elapsed time honors seven times from 1989 through 1996 on the 60-foot Americans Cup catamaran Stars and Stripes . Two years later, adventurer Steve Fossett captained the same Stars and Stripes to Ensenada in a time so fast it took 18 years to best. It was just last year that businessman Tom Siebel's Orion, an ORMA70 with a crew of eight, broke the record with a staggering elapsed time of 5:17:26.

Then there is everyman Bill Gibbs, a multiple-race winner who swept best elapsed time wins from 2002 through 2004 then again in 2011 and 2012 aboard Afterburner , a 1987 52-foot Tennant Bladerunner-design catamaran built in New Zealand.

2004, 2010 and 2013 were banner years when Gibbs and his friends sailed to the podium to collect the coveted Tommy Bahama Trophy for Best Corrected overall. But for all the wins, there were disappointments too. Afterburner did not finish four times due to breakages.

Proving that every year on the ocean is different and big comebacks are just a race away, Gibbs returned to the podium in 2016 to collect the top three trophies for the inaugural N2E of Wahoo , a new 47-foot Schionning GF 1400 catamaran that he claimed was a lightweight cruising boat. With the wins, Gibbs name has been etched 25 times onto N2E trophies.

To say that multihull yachts have done well in N2E would be an understatement. To date, they've claimed more than 70% of first-to-finish honors. The multihull revolution started in 1955. Real Estate development had replaced oil and agriculture as the state’s leading industry. Disneyland opened, polyester sails debuted and Warren Seaman raced a new kind of ride. Tokerau was neither a catamaran nor a trimaran; but a Hawaiian outrigger canoe-inspired proa. Seaman and Rudy Choy were partners of CSK; both were pioneering multihull designers. Choy is credited with creating many winning catamaran designs and scored N2E wins aboard Imua in 1963 and 1964. On Aikane X5, Choy earned trophies in 1985, 1987 and 1988.

The 60-foot trimaran that stared in the movie Waterworld, renamed Loe Real and helmed by Loe Enloe, won Best Elapsed Time honors in 2009 and 2010. For the last three years, Enloe’s 60-MOD Mighty Merloe dueled with Orion in an attempt to break the old record. The pair of technological marvels brought some of sailing's latest and greatest advancements to N2E's course.

James Arness, of TV show Gunsmoke, has his name on the Alice Purcell trophy. In 1968, his 58 catamaran Sea Smoke was fastest in the west. Through the years, some of Hollywood’s finest have raced. They sought the same thrill of victory as racers whose new affordable fiberglass boats began filling marinas opening in Marina del Rey, Long Beach and Dana Point in the early 70s.

Actors Humphrey Bogart and Buddy Ebsen, news anchor Walter Cronkite and comedienne Vicki Lawrence were just some of the celebrities who have participated. Movie producer Milton Bren and Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Paul Conrad also raced alongside a growing fleet of PHRF racers and against competitive would-be legends like Bill Ficker and Dave Ullman. Radio personality, Dr. Laura has entered at least two boats over the years.

It was 1975 before Ragtime , one of the most storied wooden monohulls, finished first to break a string of multihull wins. The 1963 New Zealand-built Ragtime took the sailing world by storm, even upsetting the 1973 Transpacific Yacht Race with a record-breaking finish. Ragtime  won N2E again in 1977. That same year, the 67-foot Merlin , one of an emerging class of ultralight displacement boats, or ULDBs, set a Transpac record that would stand for 20 years. But it would be another four years before any monohull beat the multis for Best Elapsed Time.

It was not celebrities or the chance to race in the company of sailing elite that drove participation. The more people took part, the more participants experienced the camaraderie sailing is famous for. With an average of 400 to 500 boats competing every year in the early 80's, new racers got to discover an experience that took strangers and made them best friends and turned yacht club members into families.

In 1983, a record 675 boats entered the race; establishing the contest as the World’s Largest International Yacht Race. A legion of entries and a northern front in 1984 created maybe the most spectacular finish of any race when 180 boats crossed the finish line within 10 minutes.

Sail lofts were producing laminated sails that were lighter, stronger and more stretch resistant than single layer Dacron. Motorola introduced the first mobile phone. As different styles of boats emerged, NOSA establishing new classes to accommodate and encourage further growth of the sport. Although new ultra-lights and maxi-yachts were clearly the next big thing, NOSA equally welcomed cruising classes, offered divisions of non-spinnaker classes and even a class for ancient mariners; you know: the types of boats that sailed in that first race.

And for every new class, there’s a trophy. With the thanks and support of sponsors and local manufacturers, brand specific classes were added and trophies offered. Women started taking the helm so they got a trophy too. In 2017, a new trophy will be offered for the all-woman crew who best the cruising class. Through the years, NOSA had amassed a museum of magnificent, priceless trophies.

Through the 90s, the maxi class exploded with bigger, faster and lighter boats. Radar, weather faxes, GPS technology grew by leaps and bounds. By the late 90s Roy Disney’s 68-Andrews, Pyewacket ; the fastest in 1999, 2001 (and on newer Pyewacket in 2006) dominated racing in Southern California and beyond. Although Disney broke a lot of records on Pyewacket, it was Aszhou , a 63-foot Australian-built Reichel Pugh that in 2016 made it to Ensenada in less than 10 hours - a record almost unthinkable by the sailors of the first race and by many who struggled over the years to cross the finish by the mid Sunday deadline.

Sailed by skipper Steve Maheen, Aszhou set an amazing new monohull record time of 9:35:34 on its first N2E. It beat Doug Baker’s Magnitude 80, which set the previous record for monohulls in 2009 while capping three-race streak. And although Aszhou destroyed the previous record by more than 90 minutes, three other Maxi's in the 2016 race; Pyewacket, Zephyrus and Medicine Man (that won top honors in the class) also beat the old record.

In 2022, Rio100 , a custom Bakewell White and its crew, led by owner Manouch Moshayedi, set a new N2E elapsed time record for a monohull at 7:02:17 , six out of seven boats in the Maxi Class clocked in faster than the previous record set in 2016. George Hershman and Mark Coming’s  Good Energy , a Reichel Pugh 63, sistership to former record-holder  Aszhous , arrived second at 8.32.49, shaving 1:02:45 off the old record.

The 2022 win also gives Peter Isler the exclusive distinction of being part of two record-holding crews. The multihull record set by the Mod70  Orion  in 2016, and now the monohull record set by  Rio100 .

Embracing the relationship with the Transpac Race, board members added a longer course around the San Clemente Island in 2015 to serve as an offshore qualifier. Since it is not exclusive for potential or existing Transpac participants, NOSA members hope that race veterans will want to challenge their yacht and their crew by taking the less scenic yet more challenging route. On the flipside, also in 2016, a well-received short-course became available for racers based in San Diego.

Certainly, times are different and much has changed since that first race. But directives by the organization’s founders have served NOSA well - by embracing change and making the race more inclusive, the sport of ocean racing has evolved with a host of friends and relationships established along the way.

Yet even today, NOSA members tasked with continuing the traditions still stop and ask every sailor they meet "Won’t you race with us? How can we make it fun and competitive for you?

NOSA HISTORY

1991 newport sailboat

NOSA was formed at a meeting of local sailors looking to create opportunities to race their sailboats on August 15, 1947. According to NOSA’s constitution, as determined at that first meeting, “The object of the Association shall be to encourage and promote the racing and cruising of sailing yachts in Southern California, and, in particular, to encourage ocean events for such yachts in the vicinity of Newport Harbor.”

Founding member Cliff Chapman became the association’s first president. Harold Adams, G.L. Carrington, E.H. Frazer, Logan Hendrickson, A.W. Lewis, Ed Munsey, Thomas Rutter and L.W. Wonn, were the first set of elected officers. Together, they created a temporary set of by-laws that were later adopted as NOSA’s Constitution. At the time, annual membership dues were $2. The logo they designed is unchanged.

PHOTO: NOSA’s  first Organizational and Constitutional Booklet, printed with private funds, stated its objectives, outlined by-laws for members and determined how races would be run. The original booklet is part of NOSA’s archives, held in UCI’s Langson Library; special collections.

Full Details

Accommodation plan provides berths for 12 below deck in four staterooms and a study.  Owner’s quarters are aft and of grand scale with a full beam stateroom, centerline queen berth, and private head with bath ensuite. Stowage is extravagant with pilot berth/ stowage areas to each side, nine large drawers and full-sized hanging lockers.

Machinery access is available via the passageway forward in a generous space with the luxury of all-side access to all components.  Sound attenuation is carefully engineered with soft mounts, double bulkheads and “Soundown” insulation and exhaust systems.

Galley is situated to port at the companionway. All cabinetry and trim is varnished rock maple, blonde in finish. Careful utilization of space provides food storage and workspace suitable to a large compliment of guests. Gimbaled stove with four burners, grille and oven is outboard, fueled by LPG.  Refrigeration and deepfreeze are holdover style using Sea Frost components with exterior gauges. Bread locker and toaster oven are opposite to starboard above an additional workspace.  Proper galley attributes include stainless countertops with high fiddles, deep double sinks with separate disposal sink  (fashioned with integral countertop stainless), securely latched lockers with fitted spaces for galleyware, and most importantly, a location on the vessel’s axis.

Forward of the galley to port is a comfortable circular seating area.  Cabinetry above and outboard conceals the ship’s liquor and wine locker with appropriate space for glass and stemware. Opposite to starboard is the dining area, which would comfortably accommodate as many as 12 when fully extended. Entertainment components are also concealed including a TV/VCR and stereo.

A passageway forward leads to all guest accommodations with two double berth staterooms to starboard, each with hanging and drawer storage and ensuite sink and vanity. To port is the ship’s office with bookshelves, computing, communication and writing space. This stateroom would also serve well as a Skipper’s cabin. Next forward is an enclosed head with separate shower area.

Forward in the spacious foc’sle are four berths.  This area has easy deck access and can be configured for crew when appropriate.  Chain locker and additional forepeak storage can be accessed from this space.

Interior fit and finish aboard TREE OF LIFE is to an exceptionally high standard.  Hawaiian koa, found only on the world’s finest yachts, was hand selected and bookmatched for bulkheads, cabinetry and trim from the forward passageway through the main saloon to the aft cabin.  Guest quarters forward are finished in varnished mahogany and teak.. Soles throughout are mahagony. The hand rubbed, raised panel koa finish in the main saloon and dining area, coordinated upholstery and tasteful artwork creates a climate of warmth and refinement. Ten bronze opening ports and a traditional butterfly hatches provide light and ventilation.  Interior photos taken aboard TREE OF LIFE would be a desirable addition to any coffee-table book on classic yacht interiors.

The deckhouse is one of the most appealing features of TREE OF LIFE:  it provides all-weather comfort for the helmsman and a majority of the ship’s guests, while allowing good sightlines for sail trim and navigation. Finish is in the same varnished koa that is utilized throughout the interior with such elegance. A traditional mahogany wheel is trimmed in elkhide. Aft of the helm is a raised benchseat, to starboard is a full-length watch berth.  Navionics and engine gauges are attractively mounted, flat chart storage is abundant, lockers and shelves provide storage for the cruising guides and volumes appropriate to a world cruising yacht. Polished brass Chelsea barometer and shipstrike with 6” bezel are mounted aft. A proper wet locker allows the accommodations deck to remain relatively dry in inclement weather.    An exterior helm station is situated immediately ahead of the deckhouse with an additional set of engine gauges and single lever control.

Construction Details

TREE OF LIFE was built by the highly adept Covey Island Boatworks of Canada, a yard known for its expertise in wood/epoxy boatbuilding.

Centerline structure, laminated frames and strip planking are all of carefully selected, clear Douglas fir (no longer easily available), saturated and glued with West epoxy. Hull is glass and epoxy sheathed utilizing three layers of 10 oz. E-glass. For collision protection, a layer of Kevlar was glassed into the exterior laminate from station 5 to the bow.  Decks are of similar clear fir, laid over double plywood skins, which are also glassed and epoxy saturated.  Hull ceilings are of Alaskan yellow cedar.   Ballast is 16,000 lbs. external lead with an additional 1,000 as internal trim ballast.

The entire structure of TREE OF LIFE is remarkably strong.  She has sailed in all oceans of the world in all conditions and shows no sign of movement, fatigue or even crazing.  She will likely outlive her next few owners.

Set a course for adventure: 'Love Boat' cast reuniting for cruise – and a stop in Newport

Bernie Kopell remains proud to have never lost a patient. And that was in 12 years as Dr. Adam Bricker, beloved ship's physician/Casanova on the 1970s-1980s “The Love Boat” television series.

The popularity of Dr. Bricker and the whole ”Love Boat” series refuses to fade. Instead, thanks to four decades of reruns, Doc, Isaac, Gopher, Julie, Vicki and Capt. Stubing may be more popular than ever.

Why else would Princess Cruises keep bringing the ships' crew back again and again and again as ambassadors and stars on their Love Boat-themed cruises? All of the major actors, except Gavin MacLeod/Capt. Stubing (died in 2021), are still with us. And Kopell, Ted Lange (bartender Isaac Washington), Fred Grandy (purser Burl “Gopher” Smith), and Jill Whelan (captain's daughter Vicki) are scheduled to be aboard the Enchanted Princess for its late summer, seven-day, five-port U.S.-Canadian excursion, which includes a Day 2 (Sept. 1) stop in Newport .

“It's a dream, and I've been living my dream with Princess for all these many years,” Kopell, 90, said during a recent phone interview from his home in Tarzana, California. “And I say, lucky, lucky, lucky. Thank you, thank you.”

Christened in the fall of 2021, the 1,083-foot Enchanted Princess features 19 decks, 1,830 cabins and accommodates 3,660 guests served by a crew of 1,346. The summer Love Boat cruise starts and ends in New York City and features port stops in Newport, Boston, Bar Harbor, Maine, St. John, New Brunswick, and Halifax, Nova Scotia. The dates are Aug. 31 to Sept. 7.

"The Love Boat" television series started out with the Pacific Princess (actually two ships were used) on three-night Mexican cruises out of Los Angeles. With the show's popularity, the cruises expanded to Alaska, the Mediterranean, China and beyond. In their roles as ambassadors, the crew has seen even more of the world. It's one heck of a retirement gig.

“It's never-ending. It just keeps on going,” Kopell said. “We go to other places we've never been before. Just came back with the Ruby Princess. We went down to South America, Central America. All over the place. It's just a treat.”

Also loved for his five-season recurring role as hilarious bad guy Sigfried on “Get Smart,” Kopell was no sailing neophyte when he landed the role of Dr. Bricker. Kopell is a Navy veteran, having toured the world while serving aboard the USS Iowa in peacetime between the Korean and Vietnam wars. Enroute to shooting Love Boat outdoor scenes aboard Princess ships in San Pedro, California, Kopell said he would drive right by his old Navy ship.

Aboard the Iowa, Kopell's duties included teaching a GED course to help shipmates earn a high school equivalency diploma. A graduate of New York University, Kopell was also a ship's librarian. “People say, what did you do in the Navy?” Kopell said. “I said, well, I kept America safe from overdue books.”

What was 'Love Boat' like for Bernie Kopell?

"The Love Boat" was somehow given three pilot episodes before ABC brought it into its regular lineup. The first pilot featured Kopell's friend, Dick Van Patten, as the ship's physician, then named Dr. O'Neil. Kopell said ABC, which had Van Patten under contract, yanked him from "Love Boat" to star in “Eight is Enough,” which enjoyed great success. Shortly before “Love Boat,” Van Patten and Kopell both had supporting roles on the famously flopped ABC TV show “When Things Were Rotten.” Van Patten subsequently made multiple guest star appearances on “Love Boat.”

After Van Patten lost his medical license, so to speak, Kopell landed the ship's doc role, but it was not handed to him. He had to audition where, for one of the rare times in his life, he opted not to be a nice guy. Kopell recalled wearing a spiffy nautical jacket. Another actor there to audition complimented Kopell on the jacket and asked if he could use it for his audition.

“I'm supposed to say yes and be so generous,” Kopell said. “But I said sorry. I got it for my own self. So, of course, that's how I got the part.”

Perhaps Kopell's favorite “Love Boat” episode starred dancer/actress Juliet Prowse playing one of Doc's ex-wives. The script called for the two to become, briefly, romantically reunited. Kopell said he was excited and nervous when he first saw the script. He almost went into cardiac arrest when, after a stuttering inquisition into who would play his ex, he was told it was Prowse, whom he confesses to having had a crush on. “I said oh, how lucky can I get?”

Kopell loves to mention that “Love Boat” numbered multiple Academy Award winners among its guests stars. In fact, he said he's writing a book on that topic. He listed Eva St. Marie, Ernest Borgnine and Shirley Jones. He and the late Borgnine, of “McHale's Navy” fame, became close friends.

Kopell said he routinely watches “The Love Boat” on Sundays at 5 p.m. on his Channel 54. Recently, his 21-year-old son, after watching dad on an episode, complimented Kopell for being fit and trim. Kopell said he stayed fit by playing a lot of tennis and skipping rope, which he is shown doing in at least one episode.

Kopell said that today, at 90, he still whacks the tennis ball around. “Keep coming at 'em. That's been my motto since the beginning,” he said.

Kopell said that when he first came to Hollywood, his agent told him he wasn't handsome enough to be a lead nor gooney enough to play a “heavy.” Kopell survived those first five years by playing roles that called for a Latino accent.

His German/Austrian accent served him so well as Siegfried on “Get Smart.” To this day, fans of the show ask him to recite famous lines, often from an episode where he is captaining a KAOS (the self-professed international organization of evil) submarine which is the target of good-guy depth chargers. After one charger shakes the submarine and his crew starts to scream and run about in fear, Siegfried grabs the microphone and barks out, “This is KAOS. You will not panic until you are given the order to panic.”

After another depth charger rocks the sub much more severely, Siegfried again grabs the mic and this time cries out, “Prepare to panic.”

Kopell said he never had a contract to do his “Get Smart” work. At the same time, he also had a recurring role on “That Girl,” starring Marlo Thomas. He said he got to know the ABC schedulers well and was able to shoot “Get Smart” on Mondays and Thursdays, and do “That Girl” on the other days.

Love Boat cruise is 'like coming home'

He also remains close friends with “Get Smart” co-star Barbara Feldon and with Marlo Thomas, and still meets them for dinner when he's in New York City.

Which is where he will be on the last day of August for the Love Boat cruise and yet another reunion with people he considers family. From the beginning of "Love Boat," he said, the cast got along very well. The chemistry was great.

And it's still the same come cruise time.

“It's like coming home,” Kopell said.

Rooms are still available for the late-summer Love Boat cruise which stops in Newport. Visit  www.princess.com  for details.
