SKY Yacht – Classy $40 Million Superyacht

The SKY yacht is a superyacht built and delivered in 2010 by Heesen in the Netherlands and she is the largest full-displacement yacht ever built by the Dutch shipbuilding company. 

On the ranking of the largest yachts in the world, she is listed as number 854th.

The SKY yacht interior was penned by Mojo Stumer Associates, the luxury architecture firm based in Long Island. 

Her timeless and minimal styling helps create an elegant and pleasant atmosphere. SKY is decorated with carbon fiber and steel detailing, and features a neutral color palette, with brown, white, grey, and black hues. 

She was designed to accommodate up to 10 guests in five luxurious cabins, comprising one master suite, two double rooms, and two twin rooms plus two Pullman. 

The master suite is located forward on the main deck and each stateroom has its own private shower room. SKY is also capable of carrying 12 crew members on board in separate cabins. 

This stunning superyacht is also equipped with a gym, jacuzzi, swimming platform, air conditioning, media movie server, WIFI, satellite phone, and TV. 

Her octagonal spa pool is one of the main luxuries SKY has to offer to any guest.

The SKY yacht features exterior design by Frank Laupman from Omega Architects and naval architecture by Heesen. 

She has a steel hull and aluminum superstructure with teak decks. SKY is also equipped with a stabilization system and “at anchor stabilizers” that help reduce the rolling motion effect. 

Her toys include water skis, kayaks, wakeboards, kiteboard equipment, snorkeling gear, and spearfishing gear, to mention a few. 

SKY yacht specifications

The SKY yacht is 50.5m long with a beam of 9.6m, a draft of 3.2m, and a volume of 655 GT.

She is powered by 2 MTU engines (3,650HP), which give her a cruising speed of 12.0 knots and a maximum speed of 14.5 knots with a range of 3,200 nautical miles.

She can store up to 80,000 liters of fuel and 20,000 liters of water on board. 

SKY is built to comply with MCA and Lloyd Registration, as well as Yacht Engaged in Trade (YET) Registration. According to some websites, SKY was last refitted in 2021. 

Her summer cruising locations are in France, Monaco, and Corsica, during the winter she cruises in the Maldives.  

She is currently available for private charter, her price is around $40 million and the annual running costs is estimated at $4 million. 

The seasonal charter rate is 245,000 EUR (low rate) and 266,000 EUR (high rate: July, August and special events). Consider this price per week plus expenses.

Legendary Lürssen superyacht OCTOPUS made serious waves when it was announced she was going to be available for charter for the very first time from January 2022.

A pioneering 126m vessel that was the largest explorer yacht ever built at the time of her launch in 2003, she's been mostly shrouded in secrecy until now. Inside the world of multi-million pound super yachts, from swimming pools to inflatable water parks to submarines

Channel 5 documentary Secrets of the Luxury Super Yachts has officially aired, and as well as some stressfully luxurious visuals (including the Mediterranean Sea – what we wouldn’t give to see it in person), it offered some rather mind-boggling numbers.

For example, did you know the average price of a super yacht is £40 million ($52.4m)?

Small change, really.

The hour-long show climbed aboard a number of the world’s 5,000 or so privately-owned yachts.

To qualify as super, the yacht must measure over 80 feet.

Some featured in the show, however, were 72 metres – which is 22 metres longer than an Olympic swimming pool.

Inside, viewers saw an array of everyday possessions including a £20,000 jet ski, an inflatable water park, a self-playing grand piano and a work of art made from liquid bronze.

Travelling from Barcelona to Monaco, we also met some of the staff on-board (who, in some cases, outnumber the guest), including captains, cooks and mates.

Other bizarre sights included the world’s longest inflatable water slide, which we’re now obsessed with, and an actual submarine.

Oh how the other half live.

Secrets of the Luxury Super Yachts is repeated on Channel 5 on Thursday 27 August at 11.05pm.

Crew is one of the largest expenses on a superyacht and critical to the owner’s enjoyment of their vessel. As the largest crew agency in the world, we know crew. Our cost calculator contains customized crew lists for yachts ranging from 80ft to 600ft with salary information based on our reference verified salary data.

Our users also have the ability to completely tailor the crew list to the specific needs, schedule and requirements of their vessel. Each yacht is unique and may have specific owner requests in addition to the yacht’s safe manning requirements.

Management of the supplemental crew costs and strategic budgeting can help avoid significant overspend on categories such as food and uniform. This tool contains default values based on our industry expertise and recommended budget for an efficiently and safely run superyacht.

Drag the sliders to modify your results. These are not linear scales and we expect most yachts to operate within the 20-80% window. Above 80% and below 20% costs increase or decrease at exaggerated levels and we only see numbers in these levels in very rare circumstances.

Our chart of accounts displays seven major categories, 20 sub-categories plus a further 80 detail categories for a total of 107.

Our yacht operating cost calculator is now on it’s third major revision. We start with actual yacht expense data from our yacht management accountants and then generate formulas to extrapolate out the budget for a wide range of yachts. We have been providing accounting services to large yachts for the past 18 years.

Our operating cost calculator is tuned for yachts from 80 to 600 feet. We find operating variables create the largest variances for yachts smaller than 100 feet and larger than 250 feet. We have tested the numbers the most in the range from 100 to 250 feet.

Our budget calculator factors in the fuel burn for a range of engine sizes typically seen installed on yachts by length. By dragging the green “fuel dockage” slider to the right you will increase the projected fuel burn rate and therefore the budget cost for fuel. Our default position would be for a typical displacement fuel burn. Position the slider in the 60-80% range for fuel projections for planning hulls.

Our default values produce a budget number that we believe is generous to run a yacht to a high standard. Perfect is a very expensive word to use in the yachting industry where standards are already high. Moving the crew and maintenance sliders to 80% will provide an “industry best” quality of crew and give them the maintenance budget to operate to a very high standard. If you need to go over the 80% area then you may have unusually labor intensive equipment on the yacht.

Yes, our yacht operating cost calculator can output a budget suitable for this situation. Adjust the owner use to 2 (minimum value), owner slider to 0, crew slider to 10%, Administration to 10%, Fuel and Dockage to 0, Maintenance to 10% and then Capital Repairs to 0. This will remove all of the large charges associated with owner use and vessel movement but leave the essential base maintenance and insurance in place.

Lift on and float in yacht transport is a popular way to transport yachts across large ocean passage. The yachts that this service certainly applies to are ones that may not have the motoring range or structural integrity for blue ocean cruising. The cost of transporting a yacht twice per year is put into our budget once the “Fuel Dockage” slider hits 75%. If your yacht has the range we recommend self-sufficient ocean passages whenever possible. Whilst the transport companies sell their services based upon reportedly well oiled operated schedules the reality is that your yacht may stay waiting for pickup for a week or more with no compensation due. When factoring in all secondary factors of self-sufficient passages (increased fuel, maintenance, potential storm damage, crew time off, extra delivery crew) compared with transporting your yacht (insurance, potential loading / unloading damage, loss of schedule control, no work whilst underway, crew flights, crew accommodation) we believe that there is a 100% premium associated with float in transport and a 75% premium with lift on transport compared with self-powered.

Abandoned yachts crash in value. We recommend that even if you are trying to sell your yacht that you use the yacht for a minimum of two weeks per year so that systems are tested and working every six months. There is nothing worse for a yacht than not being used. If you truly are not going to use the yacht then you should sell it immediately for the first genuine offer as every dollar you put into maintenance will not be recovered at the time of the sale.

We did not build this version with sailing yachts in mind. Early in our development of this version we decided to exclude sailing yachts as a few of the major cost drivers scale very differently for sailing yachts compared with motor yachts. For example: To calculate paint costs we reviewed the surface area of over 100 large yachts and created a formula for painted surface area to length. Sailing yachts just don’t scale in a consistent way. Similarly crew numbers don’t scale in the same manner that they do for motor yachts. If there is sufficient demand we may build a sailing selector switch into a future version of this tool.

We hate to hear when yacht owners were told by their broker to factor in 10% of the purchase price to operate the yacht. This over used saying is sadly right occasionally (particularly for newer yachts in the $20-30M range)… but just because a broken watch tells the right time twice a day you shouldn’t rely upon it to tell the time. As yachts get older their capital value decreases but their maintenance costs increase. There is no way that a fixed 10% of purchase cost rule can be true… if your broker told you this rule then you need a new yacht broker… we know some good ones. 😊

Billionaire's £40million luxury superyacht spotted in unusual British location

The Lady M belongs to Russia's richest man and measures a massive 65 metres, but this league table shows there are many that are much bigger

A billionaire's £40million luxury superyacht has been spotted in British waters.

The Lady M, owned by Russia's richest man Alexei Mordashov, is currently anchored on the River Clyde in Glasgow.

The 65-metre, three-deck yacht caused many passersby to do a double take once they spotted it, Glasgow Live reported .

The magnificent vessel is on the river next to the Glasgow Science Centre.

She is currently flying a Scottish flag and is accompanied by her nautical sidekick, Little M.

It also carries a statue of a big cat as a fearsome reminder of the boat and its owner's power.

The vessel can sleep up to 12 guests in its six cabins.

It also has a crew of 14 who share seven cabins.

The Lady M is powered by two MTU 16V4000 engines and she has a top speed on 28 knots.

Captain Gordon Scott once said about the yacht: "Lady M is an extremely safe and comfortable sea boat.

"We crossed the North Atlantic in under eight days and I was very impressed with the comfort in a seaway.

"The long, fine bow entry has a lot to do with this."

Who owns the £40m superyacht seen in Glasgow?

• Alexei Mordashov, 51, is Russia's richest man with a net worth of $16.7billion (£12.9billion).
• He is the majority shareholder of steel company Severstal.
• The married dad-of-six also used to be the company's chief executive but stood down in 2015 after 19 years at the helm.
• He is believed to be a close friend of President Vladimir Putin.
• According to Forbes, Mordashov also owns a stake in the TUI Group, the world's largest tourism country which owns Thomson and First Choice, as well as interests in gold mining and engineering firms.

Together they are some of the world's most spectacular vessels and are worth billions of pounds.

They are the property of some of the world's richest people, including the Abu Dhabi royal family and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

10. Yas - 141m (463ft), worth $180million

The Yas was built in Abu Dhabi in 2013 and can sleep up to 60 guests with a crew of 56.

Her hull is based on the shell of a former Dutch navy frigate.

She is reportedly owned by Sheik Hamdan, the deputy ruler of Dubai and minister of finance and industry for the United Arab Emirates.

9. Sailing Yacht A - 143m (468ft), worth $400million

Due to be delivered to Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko at some point in spring 2017, Sailing Yacht A boasts an underwater viewing lounge in the bow.

The eight-deck vessel also carries the world's tallest carbon masts at 100 metres above sea level.

She can sleep 14 guests and needs a crew of 42. She is currently undergoing sea trials in Spain.

8. El Mahrousa - 146m (478ft), value undeclared

The Egyptian presidential yacht was first launched along with the Suez Canal in 1869 and she has undergone several major rebuilds since then, increasing the length each time.

The yacht is usually berthed in Alexandria and is cared for by the Egyptian navy.

She is the only steam-powered yacht in this top 10 list.

7. Prince Abdulaziz - 147m (482ft), value unknown

Commissioned in 1984, the Prince Abdulaziz was built for King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, who died in 2015.

Its exact present value is unknown but it was reportedly built for $184million back in the mid 1980s.

The yacht includes a hospital, mosque and cinema and there are unconfirmed reports it also carries surface-to-air missiles.

6. Topaz - 147m (483ft), worth $527million

Launched in 2012, Topaz was the brainchild of British designer Tim Heywood.

The identity of the owner is shrouded in mystery, although it is believed to be a member of the United Arab Emirates elite.

The front of the vessel boasts a helipad.

5. Al Said - 155m (507ft), worth $300million

Ordered and built in 2006 for Sultan Qaboos of Oman, it was so shrouded in secrecy that it was codenamed Project Sunflower while being built.

It can accommodate 65 guests and is escorted by the Oman navy wherever it goes.

4. Dilbar - 156m (511ft), worth $600million

Dilbar is the largest yacht in the world by gross tonnage, weighing in at 15,917 tonnes.

It has the largest swimming pool of any yacht in the world and the most powerful diesel power plant of any yacht.

She is owned by Uzbek-born Russian business magnate Alisher Usmanov.

3. Dubai - 162m (532ft), worth $400million

The Dubai is big enough to house 115 guests and has a range of 8,500 miles.

She is owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai and the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates.

2. Eclipse - 163m (533ft), worth $370million

Eclipse used to be the world's biggest yacht and is owned by Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich.

She boasts two helicopter pads, two swimming pools, several hot tubs and a disco hall.

There is also a mini-submarine on board that can dive up to 50 metres.

1. Azzam - 180m (593ft), worth $600million

Azzam, which belongs to the Abu Dhabi royal family, took the top spot in 2013 when she was launched.

It also has its own on-board mini-submarine and a missile defence system.

It is the world's largest yacht by a margin of nearly 20 metres.
