Designed specifically for watersports, it has Yamaha Wakebooster (a trim tab-like appendage that deploys to either side to make larger wakes for wake surfing), and a 1,600-pound ballast system to boost those wakes up even more. The bow seating on this boat features two loungers and a forward pad underneath, which is an anchor locker with built-in brackets. These are designed to hold a Danforth anchor in place.

Given the fact that this is a much smaller boat, the space between the bow cushions isn’t enough for passengers to sit facing each other without knocking knees. So, they would have to sit in the lounging position.

Underneath these cushions is ample storage space where you can stow all your gear and anything else you bring along for your boating adventure.

The SX190 has a walkthrough windshield and port console with a storage compartment underneath that continues right to the bow. So, you can store plenty of skis in there and any other gear you have with you. You can also access this compartment from the bow seating area.

The helm is very minimalist. If you are looking for high-performance, thrilling water rides, jet boats are the way to go. With these jets, you can drive at exhilarating speeds, enjoy unparalleled maneuverability and boast leap onto planes without holding back. These watercraft are uniquely different from your traditional water boat.

Unlike the conventional prop and outdrive used in water boats, jet boats are powered by single or double engine configurations with an impeller that sucks water in through a grate in the hull and propels the boat. One of the biggest factors here is safety; without a prop at the back, anyone can swim or tube near the stem without worrying too much.

Another thing about jet boats is that you can practically take them any place because they have less of a draft. These jet boats can have drafts as short as 14 inches (SX190 Yamaha) and 34 inches (19 Sport Sea Ray). You can easily take your jet boat stern in and walk out into the beach without having to swim to land. Make sure the water is a couple of inches deep and has no obstructions.

WHAT IS A JET BOAT?

A jet boat is one of those crazy adventure sport boats that was originally developed by a New Zealander. These boats do not operate like regular motorboats. It has water intake systems that are similar to jet skis. The first jet boat did not have any propellers so that it would be able to navigate very shallow rivers that New Zealand is known for.

With a massive jet boat like a Shotover, you can travel at an impressive 85 kph in waters as shallow as 10 centimeters. With propellers, these boats can perform their signature 360-degree spins.  

HISTORY OF JET BOATS

Sir William Hamilton originally developed jet boats back in the year 1954 for use in the shallow and fast flowing rivers in New Zealand. This was specifically designed to overcome the problem of propellers striking rocks.

Before Hamilton, there were many attempts at making water jet propulsion but were not lasting mostly because the design of the units were inefficient and did not prove to be better than the conventional propellers. Unlike the previous attempts at water jet developments like the Hanley Hydrojet and Campini’s, Hamilton was specifically targeted towards developing a propulsion system that could operate efficiently in shallow waters.

This was the beginning of the popularity of jet boats and jet units. With further improvements down the years, water jet proved to be more advantageous than propellers for a wide variety of vessels. Today, water jets are widely used in several high-speed vessels like patrol boats, rescue craft, offshore supply vessels, and passenger ferries.

Jet-powered boats may date back to the 1950s, but it did not enter the mainstream market until the 1990s when the sale for jet boats and personal watercraft kicked off at an impressive rate. The industry dipped 2012-13 but it quickly underwent a massive comeback in 2014 after big players like Chaparral and Rec Boat Holdings (RBH) entered the jet boat market following BRP’s exit. Both companies have signed engine supply agreements with BRP.

Their entry into the market was made with jet boat runabouts that were powered by the BRP 4-TEC Rotax 1503. From the earliest years of its existence in the market till date, their allure remains the same – thrilling acceleration, absence of spinning propellers at the stern and a compact power train.   

HOW DOES A JET BOAT WORK?

A jet boat works off of thrust. By forcing the water in a rearward direction, it creates a reaction by generating a propulsive thrust; a perfect example of Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion which states that ‘there is an equal and opposite reaction for every action’. Think of the thrust you feel when you hold a high power fire hose or the recoil you feel on your shoulder when you fire a rifle.

The jet pump draws water into a bowl which is then pressurized. The water then leaves the pump at a high velocity. The resultant effect on the boat is a backward moving thrust that gets the boat moving forward.

The thrust/weight ratio in the boat is determined by the amount of thrust the jet pump can generate and the weight of the jet boat. The boat’s weight and the hull’s hydrodynamic design also determines the amount of thrust needed in order to get the boat moving at a given speed. Ultimately, it is the size of the impeller that determines the amount of thrust generated at a certain RPM (other factors also control this but for the sake of simplicity, we will not get into it).

The size of the impeller also determines the amount of horsepower required to spin it at a certain RPM. The amount of horsepower absorbed will be directly affected by the speed at which the impeller spins. Horsepower requirements vary with the size of the impeller. Let’s take for instance the Berkeley brand impellers.

Berkeley impellers are categorized as A, AA, B, C, etc. The size of the impeller decreases as the letter increases and the engine loads lesser. It also requires less horsepower to spin it to maximum RPM. To put it simply, an impeller A will take more horsepower to spin it to 550 RPM than impeller C.

On the other hand, impeller C spinning at 5500 RPM will generate lesser thrust compared to impeller A spinning at 5500 RPM. But it will need lesser horsepower than impeller A to spin it at 5500 RPM.

Take a close look at the Impeller curve chart I found at Berkeley. It shows you the amount of horsepower needed to spin different impeller sizes at a certain RPM.

The chart shows how impeller A requires 400hp at 5050 RPM to spin it to 5050 RPM. Impeller C on the other hand only needs 280hp at 5050 RPM to get it spinning at the same speed. Keep in mind though, that at this rate impeller A will generate more thrust compared to impeller C since impeller A is moving more water at that given speed.

The more water an impeller moves at a certain RPM, the more load an engine will get, thereby needing more horsepower to get it spinning at that speed. However, because impeller A can move more water at the given speed, the water pressure at the pump is higher, thereby generating more thrust at the given RPM.

HOW MUCH DO JET BOATS WEIGH?

On an average, a 16ft jet boat will weight around 1600 lbs., an 18ft jet boat will weigh 2000 lbs. and a 20ft jet boat will run between 2200lbs. to 2400lbs.

An important thing to keep in mind before you set out on the water is the maximum weight of the boat and the maximum weight it can carry. Before you go on a boat trip make sure that you are taking the right number of people on board as it is shown in the ‘maximum number of people on board and the max gross load.’

If you don’t find a capacity plate in your boat, you can make the estimation yourself with the help of this equation.

Length of the vessel (ft) x width of the vessel (ft) ÷ 1.5 = Total number of passengers

Normally the capacity plate in your boat will show the max engine power.

MANEUVERABILITY AND WATER DEPTH

Jet boats can operate in shallow waters because it can jet water above the waterline. By ejecting water above the water line, there is no need for vents or props which can protrude right below the hull. It is also what makes the jet boats highly maneuverable because there is no drag to the hull as it skims across the surface which would otherwise disrupt changes in the direction.

Due to its high maneuverability, you can reverse most of it in full speed and bring it to a full stop within a little more than its own length. This maneuver is popularly called the “crash stop”.

Another high-speed maneuver is “jet spin” or Hamilton turn. Here you will cut the engine throttle and then turn the steering sharply before opening the throttle back again. It makes the boat spin around quickly and creates a large water spray.

JET BOATS PROS AND CONS

Jet boats have a lot of advantages over traditional stern drives. Taking into consideration where and how you plan to do your boating, here are some benefits that will make you ditch the traditional stern drive for a jet boat.

•    Performance:

Jet boats have unmatched maneuverability and extremely quick acceleration. These boats can perform in ways a stern drive couldn’t even dream of. They can also ride in high speed, depending on the horsepower rating and engine setup.

•    Shallow Draft:

There is almost nothing hanging down below a jet boat because it doesn’t have a driveshaft/prop or outdrive. This means you can drive your jet boat in as shallow as 12 inches of water depth or less (although we wouldn’t recommend it.) If you are boating in a shallow lake or it has stumps, a jet boat could be a great option.

Jet boats are touted for their safety benefits. The jet pump is enclosed, and there is no whirling prop or hardware under the hull that could potentially injure or strike a skier or swimmer. All boats, in general, are quite safe to be honest irrespective of what power plant is used but knowing there is no exposed propeller below certainly does give people a sense of security.

•    Watersports:

Jet boats are an ideal choice for watersports like “wakesurfing.” This is fairly a new watersport, but it is already taking over some of the most popular watersport activities like wakeboarding and skiing. It requires the wake located behind the boat in order to push a surfboard where the person will be standing without the help of a rope. Typically, this is done close to the boat at the back which is why an exposed outdrive or prop can be dangerous. Wakesurfing can be safely done behind an inboard boat, the latest Volvo FFD or a jet boat.

Any boat with a jet drive has a superior draft advantage. In a jet boat, the draft runs only as deep as the hull, unlike in a stern drive. This makes it possible for people to drive their jet boats in very shallow waters without any issues and eliminates any problem of potential drive-damage or running aground in skinny waters.

•    Acceleration:

A jet boat can quickly plane with very little bow rise giving it an unmatched visibility advantage because the captain will not lose sight as the jet boat comes on plane. In certain propeller boats, drivers often lose forward vision for about 3-4 seconds. This acceleration can also be thrilling, and jet boats typically have an almost instantaneous throttle response that you wouldn’t normally get in propulsion systems.  

•    Interior Space:

Modern day jet boats have significantly larger space inside the cockpit as compared to a stern drive. This is mainly because the jet motors are located lower and further back in the boat. Jet boats normally don’t need a large sun pad at the top and hence can extend the area of the cockpit to 12 to 18 inch longer than a stern drive with the same size. This means a 22 inch jet boat will have an interior cockpit space similar to that of a 24 inch stern drive.

•    Handling:

Jet boats have an impressive sportscar-like handling performance. Jet boats can be quick and nimble with a thrust that can be redirected in a flash. Even an average jet can leave behind other boats in a flash with a quick jerk to the wheel and a punch on the throttle.

All boats have its own share of pros and cons, and a jet boat is no exception. Here are a few cons to keep in mind when purchasing your jet boat.

•    Noise level:   

Most of the latest model jet boats are designed to operate at higher RPMs compared to stern drivers. There’s not a lot of debates that jet boat motors will be nosier compared to stern drives. This doesn’t necessarily mean that it is noisier for the passengers in the boat. You can stop the noise from escaping the compartment where the engine is located.

Chaparral has succeeded in making some significant improvements in reducing the noise level in their jet boats. It has now reached a point where you can’t really tell the difference in the level of noise. The differentiating factor lies in the type of noise. Jet boat motors tend to give out a higher pitch while the motors in stern boats make a deeper, lower noise.

•    Fuel Consumption:

Fuel consumption goes hand in hand with the noise topic and for the same reason – RPMs are higher. It has the potential to lower their level of efficiency. But this is not the case with all jet boats. Fuel economy is determined by many factors and RPM is just one of them. Fuel consumption in a jet is slightly higher than a prop boat which may be anywhere between 10-25% higher fuel efficiency. This is due to the fact that the jet drive can harness less of the engine’s power.

•    Level of Maneuverability*:

There is an asterisk to this one because it has to be made very clear that this is limited to only a few jet boats. Different jet boats use different systems for turning. There are some that do not fare well with reverse turning. Others are not. In fact, most of them are really good. Sometimes even better than the traditional stern drives. It is important to do your research. A good idea is to get a test drive. Vortex jet boats by Chaparral is a good place to start.

•    Low Speed Handling:

Jet boats are not the best in low speed handling. A jet thrust can be advantageous sometimes, but you will miss having a rudder, skeg or prop in this case. It can get difficult to drive your jet in a straight line as the boat wanders off at the side, especially during a windy day. If you are not an experienced driver, you might end up over-steering as you approach the dock or drive in slow speed zones.

•    Reverse and Neutral Shifting:

A jet is incapable of reversing the direction of its impeller. To reverse, you can drop a bucket over the water coming out of the pump. The bucket will redirect the flow of water, making it shoot forward rather than aft. A jet is always in gear and has no neutral because it is pumping water through the nozzle all the time. You can position the bucket so that the water is deflected partially, recreating the neutral in other power systems. It can be quite a challenge to make sure that the boat does not move.

ARE JET BOATS DANGEROUS?

Jet boats are reasonably fast and can accelerate as fast as 80 km/h. And their famous 360-degree turns can be paralyzingly fast. But these are specifically for jet boating sports where you pay money to be thrown from side to side and bounced around violently as it accelerates at lightning speed and avoids rocks by mere centimeters.

One of the biggest risks to having a jet boat is ingesting random objects or ski ropes. Jet boats can suck up everything – rocks, weeds, plastic bags, life jackets, rope, you name it. Be extra careful when you travel in shallow water as it can and will suck up small rocks and sand from just a couple of feet from the bottom. It also has less torque compared to a propped boat, so if something like a thick weed bed in a lake gets sucked into the pump, you are stuck till you get it out.

These boats are built for anything but idling. You will have almost no directional control without the help of some thrust. This can be dangerous especially if you are running down the river at Wide Open Throttle (WOT) and you find yourself chopping the throttle in order to avoid something. You will lose the steering simply because there is no thrust.

It can also be tricky to back up jet boats. When this happens, it is likely for your boat to suck up large rocks when backing off the beach.

The steering will not be the same as outboard or stern drive. Your control over the steering will increase as the boat speeds up. As it picks up speed, you will find the shafts, rudders, struts etc generate an extra hull resistance making them more efficient at speeds between 20-50 knots (approximately 60 mph; 90 km/h).

Other than that, jet boats are very safe and are popularly favored for the shallow draft that it allows. They can be very agile when driven by an experienced hand but can be dangerous in the hands of a novice

So What Is A Jet Boat Anyway?

“The United States Coast Guard defines the personal watercraft (PWC), among other criteria, as a jet-drive boat less than 12 feet (3.7 meters) long. There are many larger “jet boats” not classed as PWCs, some of which are more than 40 feet (12 meters) long.” — Wikipedia

Despite being a less common method for cruising than the typical propeller drive found on a pleasure boat, jet propulsion makes for quite an exhilarating ride. It uses a water jet instead of a propeller to move forward, powered by a normal piston engine.

The impeller, which is a propeller in the shape of a fan housed within a tunnel, takes water in via a port in the hull and expels it through a small, steerable nozzle located on the transom, propelling the boat forward.

Operating a jet boat in shallow water is not only safer due to the lack of a protruding propeller or rudder, but it’s also more efficient due to the accompanying reduction in drag.

In the absence of a reverse gear, a bucket can be lowered to divert the thrust beneath the boat. At higher speeds, the water is driven into the impeller by the boat’s velocity through the water. The lack of a reverse gear and the need to use a bucket to divert the force beneath the boat make slow-speed maneuvering more challenging, particularly when traveling aft.

The jet boat was originally conceived in New Zealand in 1954. The initial intent of this invention was to protect propellers from damage when traveling rapidly through shallow water on rivers.

Jet boats capable of very high speeds are utilized for racing today. These boats are nimble, have flat hulls, and can stop suddenly by dropping the reversing bucket while at full speed due to the above features. Quite simply, there’s no other type of watercraft that’s capable of this maneuvering.

Since jet boats lack rudders and outdrives, they’re able to make a 180-degree turn inside their own length, even while traveling at great speeds. They can also be pushed laterally into a sharp bend at high velocity, much like a powerful rear-wheel-drive sports car.

The Pros of Acquiring a Jet Boat

Most people use jet boats for recreational purposes like swimming in cold water and other water sports. When boarding or diving from a jet boat’s bathing platform, the lack of a visible propeller is a huge plus for safety.

Secondly, jet boats have a relatively small draft, making it easier to beach them. Backing off poses considerably less of a risk of getting stuck or damaging anything, since there are no external propellers to get snagged on. However, you’ll need to keep an eye out for weeds or other debris that can be pulled into the intake and cause airflow obstruction or damage to the impeller.

Most jet boats have a flat bottom, which can make for a rough ride in waves of any size. This is particularly relevant for vessels less than 21 feet in length. While some jet boats, particularly those with a bowrider design and a low freeboard, can easily be swamped by high waves, this isn’t the case for others.

But jet boats can quickly become an issue in conditions more severe than a light chop since they’re difficult to track in a straight line without the mechanical grip of a propeller and the keel effect of a sterndrive or an outboard.

Jet boats make use of small, high-revving engines. A 1.5-liter, supercharged Rotax produces 300 horsepower and can rev to over 11,000 rpm. Although they’re reliable if they’re well maintained, these engines tend to be thirstier and noisier than larger-capacity, naturally aspirated engines.

The only other consideration when shopping for a jet boat is its unique manner of steering when moving at slow speeds. If you want to steer a jet boat in a certain direction while you’re moving slowly, you’ll need to make near-constant course corrections.

Not only do many jet boats lack a neutral gear, but their always-spinning impellers also prevent their engines from sitting still. In some cases, manufacturers may partially lower the reversing bucket to try to find a happy medium between forward and reverse motion and therefore circumvent this issue. However, this workaround can never replace a true neutral gear in terms of effectiveness.

Docking a jet boat for the first time can be tricky, since the steering works in the opposite way of that of a conventional propeller-powered vessel, making it difficult to maneuver in the stern. It’s not hard to become more experienced with this, but keep in mind that a jet-driven boat won’t ever respond like a propeller-driven one.

In terms of both price and speed, where do they lie exactly? For as little as $25,000, you can get yourself a brand-new, high-quality jet boat, and that usually includes the trailer. At the opposite end of the price spectrum is a 40-foot Hinckley Picnic Boat, which would set you back close to $1.7 million.

Many commercially available jet boats can easily reach speeds of over 70 mph, and the fastest-ever jet boat, Dave Warby’s Spirit of Australia II , was clocked at 317 mph in 1978, making it the fastest watercraft in history. The typical speed of a jet boat is about 50 mph, but some models have no problem exceeding that limit.

What We Like About It: Despite not having a size advantage, this boat maximizes the available space inside the cabin through its design.

What we don’t like about it : The larger deadrise angle compromises the stability of the boat in calm waters.

When you peruse the listings on Rightboat for the best  jet boats for sale you’ll discover that there are plenty to choose from. You’ll also discover that these can be very different types of boats, with a mix of aluminum and fiberglass, outboards and inboards, and everything from hunting boats to bowriders. Why such diversity? Because people buy jet boats for very different reasons.

In some cases a boater may be running rocky rivers and need a jet drive to avoid regularly dinging and damaging his or her prop. In others, minimizing draft is the main concern. Some people enjoy the sporty handling a jet boat can provide. And there are some boaters who want a jet drive simply because they don’t like the idea of a cleaver-like propeller spinning around in close proximity to their loved ones.

These are all perfectly valid reasons for choosing a jet boat. However, one should note that along with their advantages, jets do have some downsides. Some are very loud and high pitch, which certain people find annoying. Others can be difficult to maneuver at slow speeds. Many jet drives aren’t trimmable, so they can’t be used to adjust the boat’s running attitude. There’s a power loss with jets as compared to propellers, usually to the tune of 20 to 30 percent. Fishing is the main reason many of us buy a boat, and in certain environments, a jet boat will be your natural choice. Yamaha builds the most diverse lineup of jet-powered center console fishing boats around, with eight models in the lineup ranging from 19’5” to 24’6”. All run on single or twin 1.8 or 1.9L Yamaha four-stroke inboard engines coupled to high-pressure pumps with three-blade stainless-steel impellers. Fishing features common to the lineup include livewells, flush-mounted gunwale rodholders, insulated fishboxes, and integrated tackle stowage. Best Aluminum Jet Boats

Many of the aluminum jet boat options out there are also fishing boats, and before going any further we want to note that the aluminum brands mentioned in our Best Fishing Jet Boats section could qualify for this one, too. Aluminum tends to bounce off or dent as opposed to shattering, so it’s generally considered superior for these environments.

Rogue boats are a bit unusual in that they offer some of the best river jet boats out there not just for fishing, but also for all-around boating use and for special purposes as well. They even make a “landing craft” series with a huge cargo deck and a drop-down bow. Sea Ark has among the widest range of aluminum offerings, including a line called the MVJT Jon series, which is a tunnel-drive boat designed specifically for jet outboards. Sizes range from the 1652 to the 2472 MVJT (16’ to 24’), and they also have some fishing-specific tunnel models. Like all SeaArk aluminum boats, these are built with extruded ribs, caprails, and keels, are wood-free with heavy gauge aluminum decks, and are NMMA certified.

And when they say heavy-duty, they mean it—as an example, the 185 Luxor has a 0.190” thick hull bottom and 0.125” sides. The lineup goes from 18’6” all the way up to 32’3” long, including dual console, cuddy cabin, and full cabin models. Best Affordable Jet Boats

Affordability is in the eye of the beholder, but there’s no denying that some jet boats are more affordable than others. These top brands offer affordability on one level or another that sets them apart from the crowd.

Lowe Boats are extremely popular, and this builder has a massive lineup, including several tunnel jet models as well as standard-issue aluminum boats that can be rigged with jet outboards. As a huge builder, Lowe enjoys the advantages of economy of scale, and although many of their models are well-equipped with features for fishing, watersports, and even some luxury touches, their pricing undercuts that of many other builders.  Lowe boats for sale

Known mostly for personal watercraft, Sea-Doo may seem like a strange choice for a candidate as best affordable jet boats. But PWCs are boats, too, albeit small ones. And with small size comes a relatively small price tag. On top of that, Sea-Doo also offers the Switch models, which are tri-toons with rotomolded polyethylene hulls and Rotax jet drives, controlled via motorcycle-like handlebars at the helm station. Most of Scarab’s lineup of jet boats is relatively expensive, however, this brand makes the grade for best affordable jet boats because they offer the smallest full-featured fiberglass jet boat around, the 165 ID. Naturally smaller boats tend to cost less than larger ones, and no other builder has a similar offering in this size range (15’9” long by 7’1” wide). Yet the 165 ID comes with a healthy list of standard features like a ski tow bar, cruise control, a Bluetooth stereo system, and a Bimini top. Even the trailer is included for the stock boat. Best Used Jet Boats

If you’re looking to purchase a used jet boat rather than a new model, you’ll have no problem finding plenty to consider. That said, the vast majority of the used jet boats on the market were built by one of these two brands.

Compass has embraced the beamy potential of the cat with its latest tender. Hull No 1 was delivered in 2020, featuring a draught of just 57 centimetres and a bow ramp to make beach landings a breeze. With a 300hp Volvo D4 putting power into the water via an Aquamatic drive with duoprop, its top speed of 32 knots is guaranteed to ruffle its passengers’ hair. The Deluxe version features stylish pilot chairs by ideaeITALIA, and there’s even room for a convertible sofa berth and heads below. Yachtwerft Meyer

Bremen-based Yachtwerft Meyer is well known for its reliable semi-custom support boats, but it was the catamaran tender to 139.7-metre Solaris which caught the eye when it launched in 2021. Engineers employed the same rounded Marc Newson styling as on  the mothership, with a frameless curved windscreen, lots of hidden storage, a drop-down beach landing platform and a hydraulic hardtop fixed in just two places. Chris-Craft

Also available as an 8.5-metre model,  the 7.6-metre 25GT can be specced with sterndrives and a sleek fold-down hardtop for stowing in a large tender garage – its height can be reduced to a little over 1.5 metres at the touch of a button. Falcon Tenders

Southampton-based startup Falcon is carving out a niche for itself in fully custom superyacht tenders, and this 10.6-metre limo is its impressive calling card. Miss Wonderly showcases hybrid drive technology – a cutting-edge engineering feat for boats of this size. This allows the tender to operate in silent electric mode up to about nine knots before the twin 270hp inboards kick in. Beiderbeck Designs  

3-in-1 luxury tender.

Smart design thinking from beiderbeck has made it possible to combine a limo, SOLAS and rescue boat into one vessel, winning the Germany-based company a BOAT International Design and Innovation award in the process. Two 11-metre limo tenders are currently in build at Knierim Yachtbau, and a larger 13-metre version for 50 passengers is on the drawing board too. Onda Tender

Onda Tender’s 371GT flagship model debuted at 2021’s Monaco Yacht Show , following requests for a larger version of the yard’s 331GT model . A generous beam of 3.28 metres coupled with high bulwarks means the vessel can serve as either a day cruiser or a chase tender. The 11 metre Gran Turismo is powered by Yanmar and Mercury Volvo engines for a top speed of 58 knots.

• The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
• Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
• These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

The 10 Most-Exciting Yacht Debuts at the Palm Beach International Boat Show

For superyacht shoppers, the Palm Beach International Boat Show, kicking off its four-day run this week, is set to break records with more than 60 yachts over 100 feet long on display. Last year was also a banner year for superyachts at the show. 

Headliners will include the likes of the 295-foot Corsair Nero ,  the 278-foot Victorious by AKYacht, the 230-foot Turquoise-built Talisman C , and 213-foot Benetti Triumph among brokerage yachts, and in new yachts, the 113-foot Ocean Alexander Puro 35 is making its world debut.  

There are so many gleaming white vessels over 100 feet, in fact, that the fleet will be split between the Palm Harbor Marina at the main show site on the downtown West Palm Beach waterfront and the Safe Harbor Rybovich Marina two miles north. 

Now in its 42nd year, PBIBS will also showcase hundreds of models of dayboats, cruisers, and fishing boats, as well as marine accessories. Running from this Thursday through Sunday, the show coincides with the Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary art show, a fortuitous opportunity for yacht owners wanting to add new art to their collections.

Here are 10 must-see boats at this year’s show.

Corsair Yachts ‘Nero’

The undisputed star of this year’s Palm Beach show? That would be the 295-foot, classically styled superyacht Nero , built in 2007 and inspired by American financier J.P. Morgan’s legendary 1930s steamer Corsair IV . Nero ‘s attendance at PBIBS marks its return to the charter market after an extensive refit in 2021. Now better than new, the boat is being managed by Burgess. With weekly charter rates from $497,000, the vessel offers five-star accommodations for 12 guests in six cabins, with pampering from a crew of 20. Part of the refit included a full interior refresh by Italian interior designer Laura Pomponi, plus a major focus on wellness. That meant the construction of a new, state-of-the-art gym and spa, the assistance of a certified onboard trainer, a masseuse and beautician. After PBIBS, Nero will spend the winter in the Caribbean before returning to the Med for the summer season.

Ocean Alexander Puro 35P

Ocean Alexander is debuting the first of its new Puro superyacht series at PBIBS. The 113-foot Puro 35P comes from the drawing board of Italian designer Giorgio M. Cassetta and is a step back from the polarizing lines of OA’s recent Revolution and Explorer series with their bold, vertical bow designs. Aimed at long-distance cruising, the 35P can carry over 5,000 gallons of fuel and is powered by twin 2,000 hp MAN V12s for a 24-knot top speed. Twin 55kW Kohler generators can also keep the yacht powered at anchor for long periods. Other standout features include extensive glazing in the chiseled fiberglass hull, a forward deck plunge pool, and spacious accommodations for 10 guests. 

Think of it as the “starter” Sirena. Aimed at a younger demographic, the Turkish builder’s brand-new Sirena 48 is making its U.S. debut at PBIBS after a global reveal at last fall’s Cannes boat show. Such is its appeal that 27 hulls have already been sold, with 13 of the orders coming from North America. Looking like a scaled-down version of Sirena’s popular 58, its distinctive, trawler-style lines are from Argentinian designer Germán Frers. With more interior space than a typical 48-footer, the yacht offers three staterooms—plus a crew cabin—a spacious, light-filled salon, a large cockpit, an oversized flybridge, and a vast forward social area. Take your pick from twin 550 hp Cummins QSB, or 670 hp Volvo D11 turbo diesels. Or the builder is also offering hybrid power with twin 285 hp electric motors charged up by variable-speed generators that are good for a 30-mile battery-only range.

Feadship ‘Olympus’

Picture purchasing a classic 180-foot Feadship superyacht, and then getting a $10 million bill for a major refit. That was the case with Olympus , built by the Dutch masters at Feadship in 1996 to a design by Britain’s Andrew Winch and the celebrated naval architect Frits De Voogt. Sold in 2022, the new owner sent it to the Monaco Marine refit center in La Ciotat, France for a major makeover. It included overhauling the 2,600 hp Caterpillar engines and generators, repairs to the structure, substantial upgrades to the guest areas and crew quarters, and new paint throughout. With the work completed just last year, the vessel is said to be in mint condition. Offered jointly by brokers Fraser and Edmiston, Olympus has an asking price of $28.5 million. With accommodations for 16 guests in eight cabins, the boat’s highlights include two primary suites, tropical-spec air conditioning, and Palm Beach-chic decor.

Benetti ‘Triumph’

Italian yachting powerhouse Benetti is showing off its superyacht-building skills with the 213-foot Triumph . Delivered in 2021, this Giorgio M. Cassetta-designed steel-and-aluminum world girder features six decks, a 1,400-square-foot primary suite with outdoor terrace and adjoining lounge, a 750-square-foot beach club, and a touch-and-go helipad. What sets Triumph apart, however, is its lavish interior furnishings put together by the owner along with Benetti Interior Style and Monaco-based Green & Mingarelli Design. It includes pieces by French glassmaker Lalique, marble from Marfil, Statuario and Armani, furs, silk and wool carpets, plus a collection of cool black-and-white wildlife photographs by British fine art photographer David Yarrow. The pièce de résistance? That would be the owner’s Triumph Bonneville motorcycle displayed in the salon.

Fjord 39 XP/XL

Germany’s Fjord Yachts, part of the Hanse Group, has a new 39-foot day boat that it’s unveiling at the Palm Beach show. The 39 XP and XL keep all the bold design cues of the bigger Fjord 41 XP and XL, like a big, open cockpit, walkaround center console, vertical bow, mile-high windshield and stretched hardtop. As for the differences between the XP and XL, it’s all about power. The XL comes with a choice of twin 320hp Volvo D4 diesels, or bigger 440 hp D6 versions, both with Volvo stern drives. Likely more appealing to U.S. buyers will be the XP powered by twin 400 hp Mercury Verado V10 outboards giving a 50-knot top speed. Pricing starts at around $500,000.

Turquoise ‘Talisman C’

Chandeliers don’t come more dramatic than this. Cascading down the central spiral staircase of the Turkish-built, 231-foot superyacht Talisman C , this jaw-dropping piece of art comprises an array of multi-colored glass balls threaded on stainless-steel rods and illuminated by hanging fiber-optic strands. It’s the creation of Prague-based Crystal Caviar and is one of a number of glass installations on this sleek, low-profile superyacht. Built in 2011 by the Proteksan Turquoise shipyard, Talisman C was designed inside and out by London-based studio H2 Yacht Design, with naval architecture by Italy’s Hydro Tec. With cabins for 12 guests, one of its highlights is a huge primary suite, which boasts more crystal chandeliers and a private library. Twin 2,447 hp Caterpillar diesels give a top speed of 18 knots and a transatlantic range of 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. It’s listed with Burgess for $59.9 million. 

Sanlorenzo 44 ‘Kamakasa’

Delivered in 2020 and sold to a new buyer just last August, the 146-foot Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy Kamakasa will be for sale at PBIBS. The asking price, through the Italian Yacht Group, is $23.75 million. Lack of use might also be the issue here; the yacht’s twin 2,600 hp MTU V16 diesels have a mere 289 hours on the clock. Built in aluminum to a design by Rome-based Zuccon International Project, Kamakasa was the second hull in the Sanlorenzo 44 Alloy series. One of the top features is a primary suite that spans three levels and almost 1,600 square feet; it also comes with a private Jacuzzi, separate bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and a private study. The yacht’s lightweight construction and MTU power combine to deliver an impressive 20-knot top speed.

Bahama 41 GT2

As ultimate, reel-’em-in, fishing center consoles go, the Bahama 41 from West Palm Beach-based Bahama Boat Works is as hard-core as they come. But when owners kept asking for a little more comfort for the family, the builder responded. The result is the brand-new flagship 41 GT debuting at PBIBS. While the proven, wave-slicing hull stays the same, the cockpit layout is new. In place of the single bench seat, there are now three-across bucket seats with a second row behind. The wider console now has space for a pair of 22-inch Garmin screens, while the new extended hardtop features sun shades and even a rain shower. Outboard choices stay the same with either twin Mercury V12 600s, or four 400 hp Mercury V10s, good for a 65-knot-plus top speed. Pricing is from around $920,000.

Heesen ‘Book Ends’

Launched in 2022, this 164-foot Heesen is part of the Book Ends collection, owned by an American couple who have had more than 18 yachts with the same name. The exterior design of this Heesen was by Omega Architects, while Dutch studio Van Oossanen did the naval architecture. The yacht is part of Heesen’s fast cruising series, which is more efficient than other vessels its size, and can reach 23 knots at full speed with its MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines. The yacht is listed through Ocean Independence for 42 million Euro, or about $45.7 million.

Arguably the most fun category in the boating industry is the humble speed boat, which can pack a lot of fun into a compact package…

The best speed boats all share several simple yet joyous aspects that combine to create the ultimate recipe for fun on the water: a fast-planing hull, plenty of horsepower to push it along, and easy to trailer size. This formula has been around since the 1930s, however in my mind the 1970s really brought the best speed boats to the masses.

Boats like the Glastron GT-150 (as driven by Roger Moore’s 007 in Live and Let Die ) are the epitome of this type of boat – powered by a 135hp Evinrude Starfire outboard, this boat brought us what is still to this day one of the most exciting boating scenes in movie history.

England also had its share of excellent iconic speed boats with the likes of Fletcher whose Arrow range brought speed boats to the masses. After 20 years, the Iconic Fletcher brand has recently been revived, with an exciting new model the F23 due to be launched in 2024.

At the more exotic end of the spectrum, boats like the Riva 22 Ariston were driven by cognoscenti and movie stars alike and iconized the Cote D’Azur lifestyle in the 1960s and 70s.

My choices for the best modern speed boats follow the simple recipe mentioned above, however as with all things to do with boating, the boats themselves have got bigger over the years, so I will be focusing on boats between 22 and 25ft.

This is one of the most popular segments with a phenomenal choice of excellent and exciting boats, and a large budget range to match.

Donzi 22 Classic

Best American muscle boat

Introduced nearly 30 years ago, the 22 is the larger brother to the classic Donzi sweet 16 and it is an iconic and thrilling boat to drive. The hull has remained virtually unchanged throughout its production life, and is available as a new boat with up to 565hp on the back, care of Mercury Racing.

Respected as one of the finest boats built by racing legend Don Aronow , the Donzi carries the highest pedigree. A simple Bravo 1 outdrive mated to the big block V8 will push the boat over 80mph.

For the more experienced driver, the 22 is a thrilling proposition. The 22 Classic holds its value exceptionally well and used models are still highly coveted boats. With excellent rough-water handling, the hull is only 7ft wide, and with so much power and straight-through exhausts, the Classic is a real crowd puller.

Expect to pay around $175,000 for a standard boat, however this includes a premium Fusion and JL Audio sound system, DTS controls, Livorsi race gauges and a 10-year hull warranty.

Comitti V22

Italian speed boat beauty

Founded in 1956 and still built on the shores of Lake Como, Comitti is an exclusive boat builder that produces some truly special craft, and the Venezia 22 is the smallest boat available from the yard.

Similar in style to the highly covetable Riva 22s of old, the Comitti 22’s modern power options include diesel, petrol and now electric. In top spec Elegance trim, the 22 has a hand-laid mahogany deck and can whisk up to six people to 48 knots with its most powerful petrol option.

As much an object of desire as a boat, the V22 doesn’t come cheap, starting at €124,000. It is very much a premium boat, especially when fitted out at the highest trim level, but in terms of speed boat performance, few boats come close in this segment – its flared spray rails and deep V hull give a dry, comfortable ride and the top-notch build quality further justifies its lofty price tag.

Yamaha 222SE

Best jet-powered speed boat

Better suited to inshore and lake use, the Yamaha 222SE is an excellent alternative to traditional propeller driven speed boats. Using twin high-output 1,898cc 180hp engines delivering their power through jet drives, you can expect brutal acceleration and excellent cornering ability.

Jet boats benefit from the safety aspect of having no external propeller, making the boat, particularly with its optional wake-tower, an excellent tow sports platform and very safe to swim off of.

Slow speed handling on small jet boats can be challenging, but once mastered the Yamaha is hoot to drive. With a capacity rating for up to ten people and a comprehensive specification, its $75,000 price tag offers exceptional value for such a well-built boat.

Standard features like the 12.3” touchscreen dash provides GPS navigation, boat data and full interface with the boat’s excellent sound system. The upholstery is treated with a coating that reflects heat from the fabric for long days in the sun. Easily to trail with a shallow draft, the Yamaha is a very easy boat to own.

X Shore Eelex 8000

Best electric speed boat

It may not be the speediest of speed boats here in terms of top speed, however the X Shore is capable of a highly respectable 30 knots and can accelerate from 0-23mph in an incredible 4.2 seconds.

With tech from the pinnacle of the automotive industry, such as WiFi based telemetry that is always monitoring the boats systems and batteries remotely, it also updates the boat’s essential software on the fly.

The simple shaft-drive set-up is controlled by a unique rotating throttle mounted on the side of the steering wheel. This ultra-high-quality runabout has a class-leading range of just over 100nm and with 10 different configurations, its sure to have a layout to suit your needs.

The X Shore, however, is not a cheap option, with prices starting at over $320,000. Stem to stern, the Eelex is a unique and highly capable boat that can easily compete in this segment, and with fast charge times of only 1hr 10mins, this electric option is class leading.

Built with a majority of sustainable materials, including a cockpit sole made from recycled cork, it is certainly the most environmentally conscious boat on this list.

Frauscher 747 Mirage

The ultimate exotic speed boat

Austrian brand Frauscher has been building boats since 1927. Their smallest combustion engine boat at 7.47m in length is the starting point for the brand’s line of exotic peed boats. The boat featured in a Heineken mini movie chasing Daniel Craig as Bond driving a Riva .

Built to order with supercar styling, the Frauscher is James Bond-level iconic, with a single 350hp V8 producing a top speed of nearly 60 knots.

With exceptional handling and high-speed ride quality, exotic looks and top of the line build quality, the base price of €242,000 Euro is exclusive but justifiable.

An electric version of the hull, the 740 Mirage , is also available and is capable of just under 26 knots.

Axopar 22 Spyder

Best overall speed boat

Literally breaking the mould, with its twin stepped hull, variable deadrise and Axopar’s trademark axe bow, the 22 Spyder is capable of over 45 knots from a relatively modest 200hp Mercury outboard.

Prices at around €50,000 and for this you get a super-stiff boat with excellent handling, a secure, dry ride and excellent fuel economy. The 22 is offered with multiple cockpit arrangements, a T-Top and engine options from 115hp.

A thoroughly modern alternative to the classic speed boat, the Axopar 22 Spyder is an excellent value runabout , however with all the options ticked, electric flushing head and seating for six, the Axopar’s potential extends beyond the realm of speed boats to potential become a fully-fledged family day boat .

Woman rescued from Delaware River after falling off Jet Ski

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A woman was rescued from the Delaware River on Sunday after falling off a Jet Ski.

It happened on North Delaware and Linden avenues in Philadelphia's Torresdale neighborhood at approximately 5:30 p.m.

The fire department was called to the scene at the Linden Avenue Boat Ramp for reports a woman fell off a Jet Ski and swam to a "Jersey island."

She was rescued from the water just before 6:30 p.m., according to police.

The 51-year-old was transported to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital after being rescued. Officials say she is in critical condition.

There is no word yet on what caused the woman to fall off or lose control of the Jet Ski.

Private jet and yachts seized as three arrested in £76m luxury care homes raid

Three people have been arrested as part of a sting by the Serious Fraud Office into property developer the Carlauren Group.

A private jet and two yachts have been seized, as three people have been arrested, in a £76m raid on a group who ran luxury care homes.

Two sites were raided across St Leonard's, Dorset, and Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, as part of the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) probe, supported by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

The investigation is looking into the UK registered property developer, the Carlauren Group, which collapsed into administration in November 2019.

When it folded, the SFO said that it led to some elderly residents being forced to move out, and left 600 investors out of pocket.

The Carlauren Group bought 23 properties across the UK, often former hotels including the historic Windlestone Hall in Durham, and allegedly claimed to offer annual 10 per cent returns to investors as it sought to turn the buildings into high-end care homes.

However, the SFO said only nine of these became operational and some continued as hotels instead of care homes.

Alongside that, the group allegedly purchased a number of supercars, including two Lamborghinis and a McLaren 570GT, a private jet and two yachts.

Nick Ephgrave QPM, director of the Serious Fraud Office, said: "This company's abrupt collapse has created turmoil and enormous anxiety for many, with elderly people forced to vacate their homes and investors left with nothing.

"Today's arrests are a major development in our investigation and a step towards getting the answers so many people need."

The group was said to have had 600 people and companies invest in the scheme through the purchase of rooms that were to be rented out to the elderly.

This was inside luxury facilities that boasted of swimming pools, room service and other amenities.

According to the SFO, the rooms were advertised and sold with a guaranteed annual payout and opportunity to sell the asset back for a profit after 10 years
