The South Atlantic Trophy. This is awarded to the winner of the Cape to Rio Race on corrected time. There are 32 oz. of 18ct gold in the stylised boat hull and the sails are sterling silver. The trophy was donated to the Royal Cape Yacht Club by the Chamber of Mines of South Africa for the inaugural race in 1971. Past winners.
South Atlantic Race
The 11th race was held to Salvador in 2006. The 2009 race was held to Bahia. The 12th edition was back to the original course, Cape to Rio, and was won on handicap by Gerry Hegie on the yacht City of Cape Town in 17 days, 12 minutes. The 75 ft Zephyrus IV holds the record for the race to Salvador, at 12 days, 16 hours, 49 minutes and 41 seconds.

A sunny Cape Town provided the perfect backdrop for the Cape2Rio start on Monday 2 January. 16 teams left Royal Cape Yacht Club in a light westerly wind of 10 knots for a 14h00 start just off Granger Bay. Alan Winde, Premier of the Western Cape, signalled the start of the race by firing a historic race cannon.

The Royal Cape Yacht Club and Iate Clube do Rio de Janeiro are proud to announce the arrival of the ninth entry for the iconic 2023 Cape to Rio Race. The entry, Audaz, is a 16-meter aluminum monohull designed by Finot and owned by Francisco Julio Galvão Lucchesi. The Cape to Rio Race is a "bucket list" Ocean Race.
