I think the RN subs in that area are a bit too busy rediscovering the exact location of the Isle of Skye to go chasing after Russians.

A sailor is missing, assumed dead, not really a thread for joking about on. Perhaps keep the speculation to the usual analysis of what could have gone wrong. The sailor previously lost the rigging in the North Atlantic, shipped a lot of water, almost was lost at sea. He managed to self rescue and sail to Ullapool. After returning to Russia, he raised funds to fix the boat and go to sea again. He appears to be a tough bloke with resolve. The sea thought otherwise. No doubt there will be an investigation.

Man missing from wreck of capsized yacht is Russian sailor

Police and Coastguard have been searching for Roman Titov, 58, after the wreckage of his vessel was recovered near Lochinver, near Highlands.

A Russian sailor who was trying to circumnavigate the globe is missing after his yacht capsized off the Scottish coast.

Rescuers were sent out to Strathan Bay near Lochinver on January 5, following reports of debris washing ashore in the area.

Officers have confirmed they believe the yacht left Ullapool harbour on Wednesday, December 13, with one man on board – Mr Titov.

Police said that concerns for the sailor are growing and that his family is aware of the situation.

In January 2022, the Russian yachtsman was off the coast of Scotland trying to complete the same journey when his boat overturned and the mast snapped in difficult conditions.

In his account, translated for Yachting Monthly , Mr Titov said he was thrown overboard.

“As I was wearing six layers of clothing, it was very difficult to climb back on board and my face was wounded in the process,” he said.

“The mast had broken underwater, and its bits were lying along the deck.”

Mr Titov spent days stranded at sea, bailing out the boat and trying to make repairs.

Eventually, in a dramatic “self-rescue”, he made his way into Ullapool.

Mr Titov returned to Russia to raise funds to try his journey again.

His boat started off from Ullapool on December 14, 2023, in the direction of Turkey heading for Sevastopol, Crimea, where he planned to arrive by April 2024.

At least 94 dead in Mozambique after ferry boat capsizes

Most of those on board were trying to escape the mainland because of a panic caused by disinformation about cholera.

At least 94 people, including children, have died and 26 others are missing after a ferry boat capsized off the northern coast of Mozambique, say officials.

The vessel was an overloaded fishing boat and was not licenced to transport people, Lourenco Machado, an administrator of the country’s Maritime Transport Institute (INTRASMAR) said on state television on Monday.

“On Sunday we registered a maritime incident where at least 94 people died when a barge carrying 130 people capsized. We have recovered 94 bodies and 26 are missing,” he said.

The boat was ferrying people from Lunga in Nampula province to the Island of Mozambique, he said, adding that initial reports indicated that it was hit by a tidal wave.

Mozambique

Most of those on board were trying to escape the mainland because of a panic caused by disinformation about cholera, according to Nampula’s Secretary of State Jaime Neto.

The passengers were fleeing a cholera outbreak , said state broadcaster TVM, quoting another local maritime administrator.

Neto also said the passengers were fleeing cholera, according to the BBC.

“Because the boat was overcrowded and unsuited to carry passengers, it ended up sinking,” he told the BBC, adding that many children were among the dead.

Videos posted on social media X showed many bodies lying on a beach and some people carrying the bodies of children. The Reuters news agency could not immediately verify these videos.

The Southern African country, one of the world’s poorest, has recorded almost 15,000 cases of waterborne disease and 32 deaths since October, according to government data.

Debris from yacht wreckage washes up on coast as Lochinver mystery leaves locals puzzled

Harbour master says parts of the boat had been reported as a potential hazard for sailors.

Staff are removing part of the sunken yacht from the water. Image: Sandy McCook/ DC Thomson.

Debris has been cleared from the scene where a yacht capsized near Lochinver.

Staff from nearby Lochinver Harbour sailed around to Strathan Bay today to begin clearing away wreckage from the shoreline.

The clean-up operation comes just days after a major search operation was launched following the discovery of a sunken yacht.

Debris was found washed up along the coastline and a mast was spotted by the coastguard 25 yards offshore shortly after 10.30am on Saturday.

A digger holds up the debris collected from Strathan Bay.

The incident has left locals puzzled, as it is not yet known if the vessel was occupied at the time or whether the owners have been traced.

Debris from sunken yacht reported as a navigational hazard

Harbour master Joe Mackay was one of the first on the scene after being made aware of a “navigational hazard” in the bay.

However, upon further investigations at the site, they discovered the mast and rigging from the sunken yacht.

Recoverable debris was brought ashore to Lochinver Harbour

Speaking to The Press and Journal, Joe said: “It was reported to us as a navigational hazard. They thought it might be a hazard for the boats coming in and out, so we went and had a look and it turned out to be the mast and rigging off a yacht.

“It did come as a surprise; especially when you think it is a couple of bits of driftwood that have come down the river.

“There are bits and pieces washed up on the shore but that’s the thing that’s causing us the concern, with boats coming in and out of the harbour.”

Staff onboard a small orange boat bring debris from the Strathan Bay.

Returning to base, the harbour master raised the alarm sparking a major multi-agency rescue operation.

Lifeboats launched

Lochinver lifeboat was launched as police and coastguard teams from Achiltibuie and Ullapool made their way to the remote area.

Coastguard rescue helicopters from Inverness and Stornoway were also tasked to assist with the operation.

A man dressed in blue waterproof overalls and a high vis jacket surveys the debris.

On Tuesday police divers were called to the scene to begin an underwater search of the wreckage following rigorous, land, sea and air searches by rescue crews.

Five days on, harbour staff returned to the site to recover wreckage from the bay, which harbour master Joe says will be handed over to the police for further investigation.

‘We’ve kept the parts for the police’

Pictures taken at the scene show parts of the mast, rigging and sail being brought in by boat to Lochinver Harbour.

Speaking at the harbour, Joe added: “We’ve just taken in the mast, rigging and the sail. From the harbour’s point of view, it was a navigational hazard.

“If it were to break free and hit a boat, it would be a big problem.

“We got clearance from the police that we could clear it because it’s an issue we have been worried about. We’ve kept the parts we’ve taken in and they will be kept for the police.”

The sign for Strathan on the shores of Strathan Bay.

The incident has left locals curious, with many questions left unanswered.

Police confirmed investigations into the incident are ongoing.

In a statement, they said: “Around 12.30pm on Saturday, January 6, we were made aware of a capsized yacht at Strathan Bay, Lochinver.

“Emergency services attended, including HM Coastguard and RNLI.

“Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

More than 90 dead in Mozambique after unlicensed ferry boat capsizes

At least 94 people died, including children, and 26 are missing after a ferry boat capsized off the northern coast of Mozambique, an official from the country's Maritime Transport Institute said.

The vessel was an overloaded fishing boat and was not licensed to transport people, Lourenco Machado, an administrator at the transport institute, said on state television on Monday.

"On Sunday, we registered a maritime incident where at least 94 people died when a barge carrying 130 people capsized. We have recovered 94 bodies and 26 are missing," Machado said.

The boat was ferrying people from Lunga in Nampula province to Mozambique Island, he said, adding that initial reports indicated that it was hit by a tidal wave.

Cholera outbreak

The passengers were fleeing a cholera outbreak, said state broadcaster TVM, citing another local maritime administrator.

Jaime Neto, secretary of state for Nampula province, also said that the passengers were fleeing cholera, according to the British Broadcasting Corp (BBC).

"Because the boat was overcrowded and unsuited to carry passengers, it ended up sinking," he told the BBC, adding that many children were among the dead.

Videos posted on social media X showed many bodies lying on a beach and some people carrying the bodies of children. Reuters could not immediately verify these videos.

Mozambique and other countries in southern Africa have been battling cholera outbreaks since last year.
