World’s coolest yachts: Tornado catamaran

Yachting World

 • April 20, 2021

We ask top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our times. This month, Carolijn Brouwer nominates the Tornado catamaran

“The Tornado catamaran is a really cool boat. It was my introduction to high performance sailing and it had a big influence on me in many ways.

“Once you get a taste for it, there is no way back. Sailing the Tornado opened up different doors for me in my sailing career,” says Carolijn Brouwer .

The Tornado catamaran was for many years the fastest Olympic sailing class and was the first catamaran to be introduced to the Olympic Games. It was first sailed in the 1976 Olympic Games and saw its last Olympic appearance in 2008.

There was not multihull option for sailing at the Olympic Games in 2012, but the Tornado undoubtedly led the way for the current catamaran class, the Nacra 17, which must be sailed with a female and a male member of the crew.

“Sailing the Tornado is where I got the feel for apparent wind sailing. It’s a pretty big cat in the small boat sailing world with its 20ft length and 10ft width creating decent loads and righting moment.

“Also, the Tornado was the only Open discipline at the Olympic Games but it was extremely male dominated.”

Brouwer helmed for Belgium at the 2008 Games, sailing a Tornado catamaran with crew Sébastien Godefroid. “I hope this showed that being a woman you can compete at a high level and be very competitive against men in a mixed gender configuration – just like the great Paul Elvstrøm did sailing with his daughter.”

Tornado catamaran stats rating:

Top speed: 20 knots LOA: 20ft/6.1m Launched: 1967 Berths: 0 Price: £23,000 Adrenalin factor: 70%

Carolijn Brouwer

A three-time Whitbread/Volvo Ocean Race crew, Carolijn Brouwer is also a three-time Olympian. She was born in the Netherlands and represented the country at the 2000 and 2004 Olympics in first the 470, and then the Europe. She then switched to the Tornado, representing Belgium in 2008, when she finished 12th.

The Tornado was designed  in 1967 by Rodney March from the Isle of Sheppey, England, specifically to be the Olympic Class catamaran. It easily defeated the other challengers in a selection event in England in the same year, and sailed its first Olympics in 1976. Since then, with constant refinement of underwater shapes, construction techniques, and sail plan, the boat has continued to go faster and faster. In spite of the best efforts of many other designers and builders worldwide, the Tornado still reigns supreme as the fastest production catamaran in the world. It is a showplace for both the skill of the sailors and for the technology for a production boat.

Tornado Catamaran

Tornado Catamaran is a 20 ′ 0 ″ / 6.1 m catamaran sailboat designed by Reg White and Rodney March and built by Sailcraft Ltd., Marstrom Composite AB, and Windrush Yachts starting in 1966.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

 • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
 • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

 • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
 • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

 • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
 • LOA: Length overall in feet
 • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The TORNADO first appeared as winner of the 1967 international “B” class catamaran trials. It was an Olympic class from 1976-2008. The class rules were changed to allow twin trapezes, ‘flat head’ mainsail, and asym. spinnaker.(2004?)

Catamaran Tornado (by Schlueter) - the oldest rc-cat building kit ?

Discussion in ' General Discussions (MultiHull/MultiOne) ' started by tuppesw , Mar 7, 2014 .

tuppesw New Member

The volans hype just died, the joysway DF-Cat prototype gets some 'ship shape', so in between I though it is time to post something about my first RC-Sailboat. I guess it's one of the first multihull building kits you could purchase back in 1975. Luckily my father bought one for me and over the years I had periods with more or less sailing with this boat. So you may call it a vintage catamaran and you won't find wave piercing bows, foils or wings in this thread. It's and old fashioned catamaran, may be the oldest rc-cat and this thread is more about rig control. http://dieterschlueter.de/Katalogbilder_1975 - Tornado.pdf So first some facts: lenght 96 cm (37.8 in) beam 62 cm (24.4 in, one half multihull40) The weight of the boat is about 2.2 kg. The hull is made of ABS. The hulls handicap are these broad keels (1 inch? On the starboard I use these keels to place 5 eneloops AA R6 (2000 mAh) inside ) electrics: 5 eneloops AA R6 (2000 mAh) main arm-winch servo hightec HS-815 BB; 1:1 ration, 180° jib arm-winch servo new-power XL-37HB; 1:2 ratio, 100° MPX-Mini HD rudderservo A preseason shot with the c-rig: closer look with b-rig some tacking trainig with the a-rig I build these rigs with four to six panels: a-rig with 1.65 m mast height b-rig with 1.50 m c-rig with 1.35 m A d-rig will follow soon. mast: EXEL Extreme/Cruise 10 mm boom: EXEL Extreme/Cruise 8 mm It has a nice size for transportation: Recent severe hobby-horsing in waves of hull size: (I love this term I recently learned
In the mean time I use excessive rake at my cat rigs. I like a touch of weather helm and during a bear away everything is fine as long as the mast isn't tilted forward. Maybe it's a mental thing but I feel better when the thrust vectors are at least horizontally or pointing upwards. An early vid with a single arm winch for both jib and main: The rake is limited by the weight of the rig, when the stern gets wetted. So I modified the stern to get the stern easier free. Maybe I could attach the jib closer to the waterline but with a flying windward hull the jib would get more disturbed air from the flying bow. This wouldn't be nice because my jib should get full throttle all the time. Usually I reef down to a smaller rig too late so I use the main arm winch to depower the rig in a gust.
sail servos I tried different sail servos and made these experiences: a: drum winch with constant drum radius and endless sheet inside the hull: not enough beef not precise and sensitive enought at a close hauled b: drum winch with exponential drum (with smaller radius near the close hauled): more power at the close hauled better control near the close hauled but much to slow c: single arm winch (one for both sails) enought power at the close hauled best control at the close hauled fast enought even sheeting in during a flying hull possible d: arm winches (one for each sail) see above @'single arm winch' trim option between both sails (jib slot) rig depower option (back winding, luffing main) supported manoevers by the sails (tack, bear away, main sheeted in during a gust at the running) @b @d

Re: sail servos Thanks for posting these photos - and providing some info. Back about 2001 I managed to scratch-build a One Meter (MultiOne) trimaran. Photo shows a full size rig on it - but I also sailed it with a rig from a US 36/600 which was probably a B or C size rig for the 1 meter scale. Unfortunately I don't have access to a bunch of build photos, and the hulls were given to a close friend. He doesn't sail it much, so may ask for them back - restore/refurbish and sail it myself. It also has a Hitec 815 arm winch, but I was controlling both jib and main from it. At the time, multi-channel radios were too expensive so if I get it back, I may change to 2 channel rig control like you did. Here is a photo of the boat with the full A size rig next to our old car. Gives a good idea for size. Dick

close ups Hi Dick, some close ups from today. A huge jib you have got and a nice car!
Re: close ups Thanks - car was a 1998 Eagle - now replaced by a Pontiac G8 (before GM ended the product line) Have you had any water problems with the servo arms above deck?

Re: sail servos tuppesw, really nice cat, i would grab one for my self if any hulls would be available.. One question, you have two additional forestays, how come? Is it not necesary to have all the possible tension in the jib forestay? Great boat
hi spade, they are only needed while riggin up the boat, it's easier. On the water they don't have any tension and they carry the tell tales.
Re: Catamaran Tornado (by Schlueter) D-rig completed (4 Bft + rig) Main-Luff lenght/mast lenght: 80/100 cm Draft: 9 to 11 % from foot to top seam
Re: Catamaran Tornado (by Schlueter) I was asked about the floating device at the top of the mast. It's made of styrofoam (some solid foam you usually get with your new TV). The size is about 18×13×3 cm. Usually I don't have a rescue boat, so I am looking for onshore wind conditions. (BTW you see the gusts earlier)

Mij New Member

Lovely Wolfgang, you have the boat sailing beautifully.
Thanks Jim, but your new one is not bad neither! My last vids were from wintertime and it was too cold for my windsurfing boots, not to mention bare foot So I had limited access to the boat and didn't change the sails' trimm. But on those 4+ Bft conditions it was all too often nose-dive or capsize! And with those waves I should have had more draft at the sails foot and more twist at the main sail. So I hope my new d-rig is less critical, just waiting for enought wind
Re: Catamaran Tornado (by Schlueter) - the (oldest) first rc-cat building kit ? still waiting for more wind :magnify:
Re: Catamaran Tornado (by Schlueter) - the first rc-cat building kit ? finally got more wind ... ... and a d-rig test with a floating ball failure! (I found my cat upside down after a capsize ) the d-rig lever (mast lenght) seems to be too short. so the good news are, I've got a d-rig that doesn't need a floating ball (, because it's useless ). BTW: with the small d-rig (and c-rig) I got my camera-app at it's limits. You don't have an optical zoom and in bright sunshine you can't see anything at the display. While simultaniously sailing and capturing you'll get blind shots most of the time :-( So actually the rigs are: Main-Luff lenght/mast lenght: a-rig: 145/165 cm (up to 2 Bft) b-rig: 125/150 cm (up to 3 Bft) c-rig: 108/135 cm (from 2 up to 4 Bft) d-rig: 80/100 cm (from 3 up to 4+ Bft) All sails are now multipaneled sails made with claudio's gadget , battenfree and mounted with 'heavy-duty' 9 mm DS-tape. b-rig vid: c-rig vid: d-rig vid:
Re: Catamaran Tornado (by Schlueter) - the first rc-cat building kit ? Couldn't resist
Re: Catamaran Tornado (by Schlueter) - the first rc-cat building kit ? EXCELLENT !!!!! Thanks for helping to promote multihulls - 65cm, 1 meter or Mini40/Formula48.
Re: Catamaran Tornado (by Schlueter) - the first rc-cat building kit ? I'll do my very best
