Tap & Still is a local brewery that serves burgers, booze, breakfast and beer. The brewery was started as an attraction for cruise ship passengers but has become so much more.

Tap & Still is a local brewery where guests can watch the craft beer being made while sipping on their own cold brew and then enjoy a meal of burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, wings, or breakfast food as they try the various local brew flavors.

Hooman Pedram is the owner of three Tap & Still restaurants and Chicken & Bowling. He wanted to start a distillery as an attraction for cruise ship passengers but found his business ventures took much of his time. Meanwhile, the Brugos brothers, Joe and John, were operating Virgin Islands Craft Distillers, a small-batch distillery in the Gregorie East Marina on St. Thomas, handcrafting vodka, rum and gin. They brought in a fourth partner, Mario Austin, a local rental car franchise owner, to form Rock City Brewing Company within the Tap & Still site in Havensight Mall.

The Old Stone Farm House Restaurant is an award-winning, fine dining restaurant set in a 200-year old, restored plantation field house overlooking the lush countryside of St. Thomas.

The once 300-acre plantation stretched from Magen’s bay to Mandahl. More than two centuries ago the Old Stone Farmhouse was the core of a Danish sugar plantation at Estate Lovendahl. The graceful arches, two- foot-thick walls, and majestic rafters are reminiscent of St. Thomas during the days of the flourishing Clipper Ship trade, sugar plantations on lush rolling hills, and the aristocratic mansions of prosperous merchants. ​

Today this magnificently converted farm building is considered one of the best examples of classic West Indian architecture on the island.

Island Transportation

One of the best ways to get around in the U.S. Virgin Islands is by water! In fact, St. Thomas is one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean. Another popular form of transportation is in a car–either renting your own or taking a taxi. In fact, because U.S. Virgin Islands are part of the United States, you don’t need a special driving permit, just a valid U.S. driver’s license. Keep in mind the roads are often narrow, winding, and steep.

St Thomas Yachting: When to Go

A St. Thomas yacht charter is wonderful at any time of the year. Peak season is considered mid-December through April, with heightened interest in charters around Christmas and New Year’s. Summer months offer more tranquility with fewer yachts and visitors.

Cruising Conditions

Thanks to the easterly trade winds, protected bays and short passages, St. Thomas is home to some of the best cruising grounds in the Caribbean. The trade winds provide a steady breeze, averaging between 10 to 20 knots, which pick up slightly around Christmas. Visibility is excellent throughout the year.

St. Thomas is also blessed with beautiful weather. Temperatures hover in the mid-70s to mid-80s for most of the year, before peaking in the upper 80s in the summer months.

Magens Bay Beach – This stunning beach, located on a protected heart-shaped bay, features calm aquamarine waters that are perfect for swimming and kayaking. Parkland abuts the beach, where you’ll find numerous walking trails, an arboretum, and coconut groves. Other great beaches include Secret Harbour and Lindqvist Beach.

Mahogany Run Golf Course – This world-class golf course is nestled between the rolling hills and the sun-soaked shoreline. A must-play course, Mahogany Run might be most famous for the Devil’s Triangle, a three-hole stretch that towers 200 feet over the Atlantic Ocean inlet.

How to Get There

The island is served by an international airport, located in bustling Charlotte Amalie. Cyril E. King Airport offers nonstop flights to East Coast hubs in the U.S., including New York, Miami, Chicago, Boston, Dallas, Atlanta, and Charlotte. Flights are also available to other Caribbean destinations.

Ferry service is also available between St. Thomas and St. Croix, or between St. Thomas and Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.

A shopper’s paradise steeped in history

Home to almost half the population of the US Virgin Islands , and the location of the territory’s capital, Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas is known for its stunning sandy beaches and for its diving and duty-free shopping opportunities.

St Thomas is a busy and cosmopolitan island, which attracts large numbers of yacht visitors throughout the year, drawn here by the natural beauty of its sandy shores and crystal-clear waters, to enjoy the wide range of outdoor activities on offer and to take advantage of some of the best duty-free shopping in the Caribbean .

The capital, Charlotte Amalie, is often the first port of call for those visiting the US Virgin Islands, and its award-winning, full-service marina can accommodate yachts of up to 200m in length. Founded in 1672, the town is one of the busiest cruise ship ports in the Caribbean, but has retained much of its historic character and is known for its Danish colonial architecture, including the 17th century Fort Christian, which is now a museum, and Blackbeard’s Castle, a watchtower dating from the same period.

Charlotte Amalie is a popular duty-free shopping destination, with high-end boutiques lining the pedestrian streets near the waterfront. Jewellery shops are especially prevalent, while watches, leather goods, alcohol, designer clothes and artworks are also available at tax-free prices. You will find more outlets at the Yacht Haven Grande marina complex. 

If you’re coming ashore for lunch, there are plenty of restaurants in Charlotte Amalie serving Caribbean and American cuisine, as well as some excellent seafood restaurants in Frenchtown, just west of the capital. 

St Thomas is fringed with spectacular sandy beaches if you’re looking to simply relax, enjoy the views and go for a swim in the clear blue waters of the Caribbean. Magens Bay Beach, a picturesque stretch of white sand on the north coast, is among the most celebrated in the whole Virgin Island archipelago, while for a quieter, more secluded spot, try Brewers Bay Beach, on the south coast.

St Thomas is a particularly attractive destination for snorkelers, with a number of interesting sites to explore around the coast. One of the best is Coki Point Beach, in the northeast of the island, where the rich coral reefs provide a habitat for numerous fish species. Nearby is the Undersea Observatory Tower, belonging to Coral World Ocean Park, which allows you to view the reef 4.5m below the surface of the sea without getting wet. 

Novice scuba divers will also enjoy the reefs off Coki Point Beach, at a depth of 15m, while more experienced divers can head across the bay to the north coast of Thatch Cay, to discover deeper coral fields, sponges and dramatic drop-offs. The Cow and Calf Rocks, off the southeast coast of St Thomas, is another popular site for both snorkelling and diving, with a network of coral tunnels, ridges and canyons to explore.

There’s plenty to see inland, too, with a number of hiking trails crossing the island, taking in historical sites such as the ruins of the 17th century Neltjeberg sugar plantation, and for the ultimate adrenalin rush, take a turn on the Zipline through the lush rainforest on St Peter’s Mountain.

Island Yachts, a family run company since day one…

An island yachts flashback.

Established in 1977, Island Yachts was originated by Robin and Linda Luke who had recently relocated from Norfolk, Virginia. Robin moved to St. Thomas to start the College of the Virgin Islands’ Business Program after leaving a long time teaching position at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Island Yachts was developed from a concept Robin & Linda shared – to offer bareboats that far exceeded the quality and performance of those available from most companies at the time. Hence, Island Yachts was born.

In February, 1978, Island Yachts’ present owner, Skip King, arrived on St. Thomas with a dream of working in the yachting industry. With a Sociology degree from Old Dominion and $300 in his pocket, he made his way to Island Yachts small dockside office in Red Hook. Skip introduced himself to Linda and Robin and, upon their hearing his familiar Virginia accent and discovering the Old Dominion connection, they hired him instantly. Having little yachting experience Skip worked diligently to learn the business. Within six months he became the Operations Manager.

Five years later Robin and Linda were called back to the States. However, there was no question in their minds regarding the future path of Island Yachts. Skip would take over ownership in 1982 to be joined by his wife Andrea in 1989. They continue to carry on the original owner’s vision of a small family business with a genuine devotion to providing an incomparable yacht charter experience.

One of the best ways to experience the USVIs is by sailboat and Blue Dream Charters did not disappoint. We booked a private charter for two days of our vacation where Tommy + Erin showed us some of the most beautiful spots in St. Thomas + St. John. The views were stunning and the snorkeling was so fun. Six of us had a wonderful private charter out of Cruz Bay last week. Captain Will was knowledgable and accommodating of our diverse snorkel group, providing close supervision to those who needed it. Jarred (sp?), his first mate, was a wealth of information about the history, landscape, marine life and local culture peppering information into informal conversation throughout. We sailed, visited a couple of beautiful reefs we could not have accessed via Jeep on St. John, and enjoyed a very relaxing day on the water together. Captain Tommy and his crew catered to our every whim as they dodged the rainstorms and found the perfect, quiet, beautiful anchorage where they produced a delicious meal of fresh mahi or chicken tacos with all the fixings. The boat was extremely comfortable and spacious and a wonderful spot to relax and enjoy a special birthday. The margaritas were excellent, and they kept them coming. It was truly a perfect evening. Captain Kyle and Henry were fabulous! This activity made an incredible vacation fabulous! Kyle and Henry made everyone comfortable and make the trip fun. Kyle even gave us some history of the landmarks we saw. I would recommend Kyle and Henry and this boat ride as a must do!

This day was great and so was the boat and the captain. We had our family of 4 and we went out with Brian for a full day around St John. We had such a great time and he was the nicest person and so easy to talk to. He also knew alot about the island and its history. He also made the best rum punch. (best we had while on the island for a week) BEST DAY WE HAD ON VACAY. Highly recommend this company for your boat day needs and ask for Brian.

What a great time we had. Wedding went well, and the snorkeling at water island. They took us where we saw sea turtles and stingrays. The captain and Rachel we such great hosts, so attentive and just so nice. We all enjoyed our half day tour. Can’t say enough good things about them!

We spent half day celebrating our friends one-year Wedding Anniversary on Pisces catamaran! It was such an amazing time; Captain Connor and his first mate Chelsea were excellent! It was tranquil and quite relaxing; I will certainly use them again when ever my family and friends visit us in St. Thomas! I will also recommend Seas the Day Charters and Tours to my Airbnb guests!

What an incredible day!! Captan Bryan is amazing and probably the best captain we’ve ever had! He listened to basically what we wanted to do and then crafted the itinerary to perfection. We circumnavigated St. John and he took us to some of the most beautiful spots for snorkeling and just relaxing in the water. His superb timing got us to Lime Out for lunch at JUST the right time to secure us the best Lilly pad in the house! He was personal and informative and took the trip (which would have been great by itself) to the next level. Highly recommend!!

We had an absolutely fabulous day with Glenn! Truly, it could not have been better! Glenn is a very experienced sailor and very knowledgeable about the Caribbean. He is also a great guy and we all thoroughly enjoyed hanging with him for the day. We snorkeled at several great spots in the BVI, visited Willie T's and Soggy Dollar.

Whenever we visit St John "Boat Day" is always everyone's favorite day of the the vacation. This year was fabulous! We are a 3 generation family of 11 with six kids ages 9 and under. Captain Alex and First mate Aaron found out exactly what we like to do and they made it happen. The snorkeling was amazing, lunch from the pizza boat was delicious and fun and the time out on the water all day cannot be beat. Thank you Seas the Day and especially to Alex and Aaron. Our day really could not have been better!!!

An amazing experience to St. John! We went to snorkel at 2 different places that were both beautiful! Captain Greg and Coleman were amazing and so nice. They answered all of our many questions about the island and gave us the best information. They were so knowledgeable! We never felt rushed and we felt like they wanted to give us the best experience possible. The boat was so clean and the snorkeling gear was great. Very professional. This is the charter to book!

12/12/18 - IYC Hurricane Recovery Update

Skip King, President

Skip transplanted to the Virgin Islands from Norfolk VA in 1977. He is a graduate of Matthew Fontaine Maury High School and Old Dominion University in Norfolk VA. Skip holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. Prior to his work in the marine industry Skip was an activities therapist for a private psychiatric hospital. The skills Skip acquired in this field contribute greatly to his work aboard our yachts and his dealings with the many personalities of our charter guests. Always the southern gentleman, Skip has a unique, genuine approach with each guest and his love of boats and sailing is infectious.

Skip is an avid yacht racer having won his class in two Rolex International Regatta’s and is the St Thomas Yacht club summer series champion for the past four years. Skip is also an avid tennis player, certified diver and Coast Guard licensed captain. Skip oversees all mechanical and maintenance aspects of the IYC fleet as well as directing a very capable dock staff.

Andrea King, Vice President/Secretary

Andrea moved to the Virgin Islands in January 1985. She is a native of Attleboro MA and a graduate of Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro and Westfield State College in Westfield MA where she was a starting guard for the WSC fighting Owls women’s basketball team for three years.

Andrea holds a bachelor’s degree in Communications. Prior to her career as a yacht broker and business owner, Andrea was a television producer and editor, having worked for two NBC affiliates and a private production company.

Andrea started her career with IYC in 1989 after hurricane Marilyn hit the island and the power was knocked out for nearly three months. Her work with Skip picking up the pieces after the storm was to be temporary until television was back online, however, a career change was imminent and Andrea began her full-time career with IYC. Andrea is a horse owner, having ridden for the VI Equestrian Association, and loves sailing, horseback riding, and biking in her spare time.

I know cabs can be hit or miss on cards. My itinerary has us taking about 11 cab rides throughout our stay.

We are doing two excursions (boat rides)

Maybe some street side/town vendors shops

Just wondering who has been recently might be able to give a general estimate of potential amount of cash needed between cabs, Excursion tipping and other cash only venues?

Taxi's that take credit cards are rare, most are cash. Taxi costs are not inexpensive as it's per person. Some places are adding a % for using your credit cards. We usually always leave tips in cash even at home and your suppose to tip on the sail excursions which you may know.

There are ATM's through out the island but plan ahead as sometimes they run out of money. Bring a lot of small bills because you may be told that the taxi etc does not have change. If I run low on small bills I go down to the bar and ask the bartender if he wants to trade a lot of small bills for a $20 or $50 bill late in the day or early evening..

Most all of the restaurants take credit cards , as do most retail stores.

I would start off with about $500 or $600 in cash..

If you've seen the rate sheet you'll know that taxis charge per person and the fares really add up.
