Description.

PANDORA is the only gaff-rigged 9mR now in existence. Designed by Johan Anker and built by the famous Anker Jensen yard, she remains impressively original. Of all the famous designers of his era Anker was probably the best helmsman. It would seem his understanding of what was needed to make a boat go fast and his preoccupation with the subtle beauty of lines revealed a purity - rather understated, which nevertheless can take your breath away

With short Nordic 5 months seasons and wintering in tented storage she has been very well looked after and as important, is a most beautiful classic yacht to the eye of any beholder – and a dream to sail.

Her current owner - for five seasons - has carried out extensive works; all major repairs having been done by a professional boatyard. She has moreover been maintained to a high standard, especially the hull, bright work and woodwork.

Of all the famous designers of his era Anker was probably the best helmsman. Her current owner - for eight seasons - has carried out extensive works; all major repairs having been done by a professional boatyard. She has moreover been maintained to a high standard, especially the hull, bright work and woodwork.

PANDORA is probably the first R boat in the World, built to the first R Rule of 1907. Johan Anker was one of the architects behind this rule, which was agreed upon in London in late 1906 and operating from 1907. During the winter 1906 / 07 the Anker & Jensen shipyard in Norway had 11 big boats built; 8 of them to the new rule. PANDORA was also the first to be completed and was launched in February 1907. During her 100 year – nay 108 year history she has only had 8 owners; one of whom was for 30 years and another for 28! This is probably one of the reasons why she is still very original and in great shape. She was originally gaff rigged, but then rigged as a Bermuda in 1921, and stayed that way for about 80 years, winning several races meanwhile. In 2001 she was re rigged back to gaff, and awarded the special prize for “Best sailing yacht” at Risør woodenboatfestival in 2007. Full historical information including the identities of all her owners, is available as well as historic photographs of the boat.

Johan Anker was considered an artist in yacht design - greatly concerned with the beauty of lines and BOJAR doesn’t disappoint. Indeed as a boat of such breathtaking and effortless beauty, a classic gem; she genuinely lifts the human spirit and perhaps even defines the term “classic yacht.” With her keel weight and displacement balanced at approximately 50 / 50 she is an extremely effective sailing boat. Perhaps no surprise then she was the winner of a 'Je ne sais quois’ at the 2012 Panerai Regatta at Cowes; third in class in the Round the Island race and more recently impressive results at the RYS Bicentenary Regatta. In these days of restorations, it is rare to find a boat both so original and in such fine condition. Given she has had only a few owners throughout her life – the last but one for 28 years, the short Norwegian sailing seasons then with nearly every winter spent inside her own boat shed will certainly have helped. BOJAR can be classic raced with family and friends or easily sailed by just two people, which is unusual for a yacht of this size and vintage. She is truly exceptional.

BROKER'S COMMENTS

Johan Anker was an artist in yacht design greatly concerned with the beauty of lines - BOJAR is a boat of such breathtaking and effortless beauty; she genuinely lifts the human spirit and perhaps defining the term ‘classic yacht’. A ballast ratio at approximately 50 / 50 she is an extremely effective sailing boat. Rarely off the podium at any classic regatta – at the RYS Bicentenary Regatta BOJAR proved an equal match for icons DORADE and STORMY WEATHER. In these days of restorations, it is rare to find a boat both so original and in such fine condition. With only a few owners throughout her life – the last but one for 28 years, the short Norwegian sailing seasons with winters in a boat shed will also have helped. BOJAR can be raced with family and friends or easily cruised by just two people - unusual for a yacht of this size and vintage. Highly recommended.

Historical notes

ANKER & JENSEN YARD No. 417 BOJAR was launched in 1937 as ILMEN V and was one of the last designs from the board of Johan Anker. She rates as a 10 metre class yacht, originally launched in 1937 as ILMEN V which was one of the last 90 square metre designs from the board of Johan Anker being built with similar dimensions to a F class 10 metre designed to cruise and race with the metre classes. Anker’s reputation is in part due to his incredible success in International Rule designs, his creation of the iconic Dragon One Design - and of all the famous designers of his era, he was arguably the best helmsman. Anker often watched the offerings of Messrs Fife and Mylne cross the finish line behind him - This “feel” for a boat helped him create some of the fastest and most beautiful designs of any period. BOJAR’s dimensions are similar to the 10 Metre class, but with the slightly greater beam, that her first owner Ludvig Swinndal had requested, in his quest for the perfect cruiser racer. In due course she passed to Ragnvald Jacobsen, re naming her BOJAR, and keeping her from 1941 to 1967. Jacobsen was also a talented helmsman, winning many regattas in the 5.5 and 6 Metre classes.

Construction and finish

BOJAR was built by Anker & Jensen of Oslo, one of the most prestigious yards in Scandinavia using materials and applying craftsmanship of the very highest quality. - Oregon pine 30 mm planking on composite hot dip galvanized steel and wooden frames - Oak keel, stem and stern post - Elm steam bent ribs - Teak deck - Traditional bronze fittings - Faired smooth topsides painted with Awlgrip

Racing notes

BOJAR had a long sailing career in Norway before joining the Solent based fleet of classic yachts in 2012. In Cowes she has participated in the annual Panerai Cowes and Classic Week regattas showing impressive form, which led to an invitation to the RYS Bicentenary in 2015. This event saw BOJAR racing against STORMY WEATHER, DORADE, ARGYLL AND TOMAHAWK as well as 20 of the local English based classics including CETAWAYO, INFANTA, OPPOSITION AND WHOOPER. Fleet and class racing at these regattas saw BOJAR achieve some impressive results against more modern designs both inshore and in the offshore conditions experienced in the Round the Island classic regatta races. This racing programme has provided a spectacular series of photographs that evidence the success of the newly designed sail plans and IRC 0.973 rating optimisation without compromising the originality or integrity of the 1937 build. SOLENT RACE RESULTS Summary stats 2012 - 2018 2018 - 1st place in 8/14 ( 57%) races, 1st or 2nd places in 11/14 (84%) races 2012 to 2018 - 1st place in 13/48 (27%) races and in top 3 places in 25/48 (52%) races Round the Island Classic Yacht races - First in class in RYS Bicentennary Regatta and three third places in the three Panerai RTI events held between 2012 and 2016.

Certification

Fully certified weight and measurement certification of the IRC rating by pressure calibrated weighing plates supervised by the Lymington RORC rating office measurement team. 2018 IRC certificated measurement achieved 0.961 and a KLR of 0.957 close to the 2012 figures after design and implementation of a rating optimised original sail plan.

Johan Anker VARG – Rebuilding a Legend

Archive – In 1924, the Norwegian industrialist Fritjof Larsen, commissioned the celebrated naval architect Johan Anker to design and build an eight metre yacht fast enough to beat the best of the British boats on the Solent. Anker “the Master of Lines” responded by creating the beautifully proportioned long and slender sloop that was to be called Varg (the Norwegian word for wolf), a vessel destined to have not one but two lives.

Varg’s success in English waters brought her to the attention of music publisher Frank Albert in faraway Australia and in 1926 he bought her as a 21st birthday gift for his son Alexis and had her shipped out to Sydney.

The Albert family didn’t much care for the name Varg so they chose to call her Norn, a reference to the all-powerful maidens in Norse mythology who rule the destiny of the gods and men. Norn was to become one of Australia’s most celebrated racing yachts. The winner of the coveted Sayonara Cup, she reigned supreme at Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron for almost half a century.

When the Albert family sold her in the 1960s she fell into a sharp decline and in the hands of a succession of indifferent owners, her classic lines were mutilated by a series of ugly accretions: a hideous cabin aft and the brutal truncation of her long and graceful counter stern. Sheathed in a crude skin of plywood she became a parody of a boat, a decrepit rotting hulk too weak to leave her mooring.

To hide her shame she slid to the bottom of Sydney Harbour where she remained for weeks until she was salvaged and again put up for sale. There were plenty of dreamers, but no one with an imagination vivid enough to perceive anything other than an old boat in the terminal stages of decay.

It would take the sensitive eye of an artist, a man with a profound aesthetic sensibility, to appreciate that lying beyond all that debris was in fact a rare and beautiful example of the work of one of the world’s most famous and gifted yacht designers.

That person was Kraig Carlström, a life-long racing sailor who also happens to be one of Australia’s most gifted professional photographers. Carlström understood at once that here was an exceptionally beautiful vessel and that he would be her saviour.

Even so, he was in for a dreadful shock as soon as he stepped aboard. There was well over a metre of putrid water in the bilge and she was streaked with rust and redolent of the sour smell of rotting timber. Although most of us would have turned tail and fled, Carlström held his nerve and stumped up the $25,000 her cheeky owner was asking. The price was to be subject to inspection by a qualified marine surveyor.

Carlström had the good sense to engage the services of Doug Brooker, then one of Australia’s best-known and most respected wooden boat builders. In the several hours they spent examining all the defects, the boatbuilder produced a penknife and deftly thrust it into her timbers, demonstrating that she was little more than a waterlogged sponge held together by the tens of thousands of staples in her plywood sheathing.

Carlström reluctantly asked for his money back. But, after a couple of restless months in which he found himself unable to shake off Varg’s memory, he decided to go back and offer roughly half the initial asking price. With no one else even remotely interested, Carlström found himself the owner of one very shaky old boat.

He knew that restoration was out of the question so he decided to truck the hull all the way south to his home at Cygnet, a sleepy backwater at the head of Tasmania’s beautiful D’Entrecasteaux Channel.

There, just a mile from his waterfront home, stands the rambling old tin shed at the heart of the famous Wilson Brothers boatyard. Since the 1870s four generations of the Wilson family have produced some of Australia’s most talented wooden boat builders, craftsmen who created many of the island state’s most famous trading ketches and schooners.

Michael Wilson and his very talented boatbuilding partner, Warren Innes, were then just completing a 47ft Herreshoff ketch. Carlström sounded them out. If the restoration of Varg was out of the question, might they consider taking her lines off and building an exact copy? After a prolonged pause came the answer … “yes, we could do that.”

It was a response that was to trigger one of the most ambitious boat building programs ever undertaken in Australia.

Carlström enlisted the help of the highly regarded Portuguese naval architect David Vieira who is one of the world’s leading authorities on eight metre class boats.

In the archives at Norway’s National Maritime Museum, Vieira unearthed Johan Anker’s original lines for Varg and subsequently produced a set of 23 drawings that would be needed for the boat. Nearly all the bronze deck fittings and winches were cast and finished in the specialist foundry associated with Vieira’s Absolute Restorations in Lisbon.

Varg’s magnificent Huon pine hull has been under construction for four years. She is a breathtaking example of the boat builder’s art. Rarely, if ever, has Australian boat building seen anything like the attention to detail that has been lavished on Varg. The timber selection has taken years and involves the use of only the very best and most beautiful Tasmanian native timbers.

When she goes in the water at the end of this year, Varg will undoubtedly be one of the most magnificent yachts ever constructed in Australia or anywhere else for that matter.

Kraig Carlström could have had her built anywhere in the world. How extraordinary therefore that he should have found craftsmen of the calibre of Michael Wilson and Warren Innes, just across the water from his own home on Port Cygnet Bay.

Varg’s original lead keel has been reused in the new boat. The old hull, which now serves as a piece of monumental sculpture, still draws admiring gasps from those who know and appreciate the work of the Master of Lines.

Johan Anker

Norwegian yacht designer and sailor. A competitor in olympic sailing events of 1908, 1912, and 1928, as well as number of other world championship regattas. 1905 he bought in to a small boat building yard which became Anker & Jensen. At this time the International Rule was in it’s heyday and Anker had great success with his 6, 8 and 12 meter racing designs. He steered his 6 meter design ‘Norna’ with King Olav to win Gold medal at the 1928 Olympics. Ankers most enduring achievement was the design of the DRAGON. The DRAGON, an olympic class for a number of years, is sailed and raced around the world to this day. After World War II, Anker’s sons waived the royalty for this design to English builders as a token of appreciation to that nations support of Norway in it’s darkest hour.

Johan had been dreaming for some time of designing a larger Metre boat. In 1909, he turned this into reality and financed the new build himself. Brand IV was 18.8m (61ft 8in) long, 3.5m (11ft 6in) wide and had a sail area of 246m2 (2,648sqft). (Photo: The Abel Collection/Norwegian Maritime Museum)

The designer

As an outstanding designer and sailor Johan Anker was the central figure in Norwegian sailing sport in the first decades of the 1900s.

The International Rule, also known as the Metre Rule, that was created for the construction, measuring and rating of sailing yachts, should be one of Johan Anker's major life tasks. He had a strong influence in the work of the first international rule, adopted in London in 1906, and is considered the creator of the Scandinavian S-rule of 1917, which in turn formed the basis for the second International rule, adopted in 1919. He also designed the Dragon that was used as an Olympic class from 1948 to 1972
