Liberty Square Guide

Ep. 70 – Liberty Square Guide

We continue our in depth land by land overviews with our Liberty Square guide. What do we think of the attractions, food options, and what are the best photo ops? Also, why do we think Liberty Square has some of the best merchandise in the Disney parks? All that and more on this episode of Disney Deciphered!

Attractions in Liberty Square

Liberty Square has three attractions, though probably only one that most Disney fans rate. That being said, it’s a great place to relax and escape heat or rain, plus there’s a lot for you and your kids to learn! So let’s start by taking a look at the attractions available.

Current Attractions

  • Hall of Presidents : This 25 minute long show is a celebration of the office of the presidency over the course of American history. It features some amazingly life-like audio animatronics and some sage wisdom from the likes of Abraham Lincoln. Revisit key moments in United States history through the lens of the presidency. A nice cool place if you need to avoid the heat or rain. Verdict? Joe: Sometimes ride (but always ride in the rain!)  Leslie: Sometimes ride.
  • Liberty Square Riverboat : You can board this three tier riverboat at the Liberty Square Riverboat landing for a peaceful cruise around the Rivers of America. This beautiful, large paddlewheel boat is a sight to see and a relaxing ride. Verdict?  Joe:  Never ride (though his son keeps begging). Leslie: Sometimes ride.

Liberty Square Guide

Dining in Liberty Square

Liberty Square has some of our favorite quick service restaurants in the Magic Kingdom (a place where we generally find it tough to get something good to eat).

If you’re looking for something unhealthy, head on over to Sleepy Hollow and get the Spicy Chicken Waffle sandwich (hold the spicy sauce if you’re buying for your kids). A fried chicken filet inside a waffle with a sweet and spicy sauce? You can’t go wrong.

For a healthier option, head on over to Joe’s most mentioned restaurant, Columbia Harbor House. You can get grilled salmon, broccoli, or macaroni and cheese (for the unhealthy option!).

Liberty Tree Tavern is the only table service restaurant in Liberty Square. It serves traditional New England fare that we consider a little bit overpriced, but we’re biased as we’ve both spent quite a bit of time in New England!

Entertainment in Liberty Square

One thing we wanted to highlight in Liberty Square is “Great Moments in American History”, a show that happens a few times a day in Liberty Square. The Muppets present two separate shows: The Declaration of Independence and the Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. It’s a very cute and very educational show, well worth your time (unless it’s too hot out!). Check Disney’s website or your My Disney Experience app to find out when it’s playing on a given day.

Merchandise in Liberty Square

Liberty Square has some of our favorite merchandise options in Walt Disney World. The cleverly named Memento Mori is one of the few places you can get Haunted Mansion merchandise and we love the ornaments you can find at Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe. Definitely check both those locations out!

History and Trivia

  • At this location: Riverboats have been making the tour of the Rivers of America around Tom Sawyer Island since the day after the park opened in 1971.
  • The Attraction's History: Depending on how you want to count them, either two or three authentic steam-driven riverboats have been used at this attraction over the years. When the park opened in 1971, the Admiral Joe Fowler was the only boat operating. It was named after the retired Navy admiral who oversaw construction of both Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom before retiring in 1972. The boat itself was retired in 1980 but can still be seen backstage at times when riding the Walt Disney World Railroad. Coming online in 1973 was a second paddlewheel named the Richard F. Irvine after Dick Irvine, who was then just retiring as chief of WED Enterprises (now known as Walt Disney Imagineering). In 1996 the Richard F. Irvine underwent an extensive refurbishment and when it came out of drydock it was renamed Liberty Belle , the name it currently bears.

Liberty Square Riverboat Fun Facts

Did you know.

  • Liberty Square Riverboat is a steam-powered paddle wheeler, a replica of a vessel that one may have seen sailing the Mississippi River during the 19 th century. Liberty Square Riverboat does not, however, operate solely on steam power; it is aided by a submerged rail.
  • The vessel’s official name is Liberty Belle , a moniker it has held since 1996. From 1973 to 1996, the riverboat was entitled Richard F. Irvine , after a Disney executive.
  • The Liberty Square Riverboat embarked on its first voyage on October 2, 1971, one day after the Magic Kingdom opened. Titled Admiral Joe Fowler , after a retired navy admiral who was instrumental in the building of both Disneyland Park and the Magic Kingdom, this vessel was inadvertently destroyed during a 1980 refurbishment. Richard F. Irvine / Liberty Belle has served as the Magic Kingdom’s sole paddle wheeler since 1980.
  • Liberty Square Riverboat has four decks from which guests can view the lush wilderness of Tom Sawyer Island , as well as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad , and Haunted Mansion .
  • A voice actor portraying Mark Twain narrates the voyage.
  • Guests are often, though not always, upon request allowed in the Pilothouse , where they can interact with the captain and “steer the ship” with the big wheel—the boat is guided on rail, so there’s no danger here.
  • Liberty Square Riverboat is currently the only boat to sail the Rivers of America. Previously, “Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes” operated from opening day, October 1, 1971, until 1994; and “Mike Fink Keel Boats” sailed from opening day through April 29, 2001.
  • Liberty Square Riverboat’s counterpart at Disneyland is Mark Twain Riverboat . Disneyland also offers two seasonal vessel experiences: “Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes” and “Sailing Ship Columbia ,” a replica of Columbia Rediviva , an 18 th -century merchant ship.

Top 5 Tips for Liberty Square Riverboat

  • Experience Liberty Square Riverboat during the afternoon, when crowds are especially heavy at the park’s headliner attractions.
  • Explore the various decks of the vessel.
  • Enjoy the scenery around the vessel.
  • Inquire about sailing in the Pilothouse for a different perspective of the voyage.
  • Snacks and drinks are not allowed aboard the Liberty Square Riverboat, so prepare to eat either before or after your voyage.

Where to Play, Eat & Shop in Liberty Square – Disney World Guide

As a fervent believer in the promise of America, Walt Disney was known for his patriotism, and few places are more representative of that love of country than Magic Kingdom’s Liberty Square. While the idea was initially envisioned as an extension of Main Street, U.S.A. in Disneyland, Liberty Square eventually made its way to Florida and Disney’s new  Magic Kingdom Park —and the rest, as they say, is history.

And we mean that quite literally. Aside from the grim, grinning ghosts that call the land’s Haunted Mansion home, strolling through Liberty Square can feel like taking a step back in time, specifically the time period of the American Revolutionary War, from colonial-era architecture and accoutrement down to the lack of plumbing.

But just what does this patriotic part of the Walt Disney World Resort have in store for guests? Grab your tricorn (that’s the iconic three-cornered hat worn by aristocrats, soldiers and commonfolk alike during the 18th century) as we delve into everything you can see and do in Liberty Square. We hope you’re ready for a history lesson!

Haunted Mansion during middle of day

Liberty Square, A Walt Disney World Exclusive with Colonial-Era Credibility

Though you’ll find some incredible theming throughout the other lands at Magic Kingdom, nothing can compare to the meticulous historical accuracy found in Liberty Square. From faithfully recreated architectural styles to a replica Liberty Bell and much, much more, this quaint corner of Magic Kingdom Park is a loving ode to colonial America.

In fact, simply traveling through Liberty Square from the area around Haunted Mansion near Fantasyland and over to Frontierland is like taking a trip through not only time but across the United States. So, as you’re walking around, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the many design details sprinkled around the land like patriotic pixie dust.

A Whirlwind Tour of Colonial America

Your American adventure begins near  Fantasyland  at the Haunted Mansion, which is designed to resemble the Dutch Gothic-style homes of the Hudson River Valley during the late 17th and early 18th centuries in upstate New York. From there, it’s onto The Hall of Presidents and the Georgian-style architecture that was prominent in Philadelphia during our nation’s founding. Notice the two-digit house numbers on the doors in the area? Just stick an 18 in front of the address, and you’ve got the time period in which those homes would have been designed.

While we’re here, be sure to take a look at two of the land’s most prominent features: replicas of both the Liberty Bell and Liberty Tree. Created for America’s Bicentennial, the replica of the bell was originally intended for Pennsylvania. However, since the original was already located in Philadelphia, Walt Disney World asked state officials if they could make it the centerpiece of Liberty Square. Luckily, they said “yes,” making Florida the only state with two Liberty Bell replicas.

Near the bell is a massive oak tree, which is hung with 13 lanterns representing the 13 colonies. Known as the Liberty Tree, the 135-year-old tree represents a famous elm that once stood in Boston, Massachusetts, and was both a powerful symbol and rallying point for protesters against the Crown. Liberty Square’s version, as the story goes, was even chosen by Walt himself from elsewhere on Disney property.

Tree with lanterns in Liberty Square at Magic Kingdom Park

Some of the more subtle details in Liberty Square can be seen in this part of the land’s many windows, which themselves serve as a window to life during colonial times. For example, you might see that many of the shutters hang at a rather jaunty angle. This is because metal was scarce during the Revolutionary War, and folks would strip it from any source they could find in order to craft more ammunition. This even included the metal brackets for their window shutters, which were then replaced by strips of leather. Naturally, the leather would stretch over time, causing the shutters to hang askew.

Another window pays homage to Paul Revere. Remember the saying, “one if by land, and two if by sea,” that was coined by American poet Henry W. Longfellow? Two lanterns placed in the window of one Liberty Square building serve as a nod to Revere and his famed midnight ride. Luckily, at least one neighbor is a Minuteman ready for the coming incursion. See the rifle resting on a windowsill near the exit for The Hall of Presidents? This was used to indicate that the man of the house wasn’t just home but also armed and ready to join the fray. The Redcoats are coming!

Lastly, it’s onward to Frontierland and the Wild West. Your last stop in Liberty Square, and the bridging point between the colonial-themed land and Frontierland, is The Diamond Horseshoe. Made to resemble a building in 1820s-era St. Louis along the mighty Mississippi River, this rustic saloon also marks one of the starting points of Western Expansion.

Before we get to all the attractions, restaurants and shops you can find in Disney’s tribute to colonial America, here’s one last history lesson for you—or, if you will, Liberty Square’s dirty little secret. Remember how we mentioned that there wasn’t any indoor plumbing during the American Revolution? Similarly, no restrooms are located in Liberty Square. Though it’s true that guests can go to the loo in both Columbia Harbour House and Liberty Tree Tavern, the restrooms were constructed so far back in each of the  restaurants  that they are technically considered part of Fantasyland and Adventureland, respectively. Talk about historical accuracy!

Of course, the question remains, where did all that waste go back in the day? They threw it out their windows and into the streets. Now, look down at the ground in Liberty Square. Notice that river of brown that flows throughout the land? You guessed it! That’s symbolic “sewage” that you’re stepping in. Fortunately, you don’t need to run and wipe off your feet.

Where to Play, Eat and Shop in Magic Kingdom’s Liberty Square

Although Liberty Square might be the smallest land in Magic Kingdom, there is still plenty to see and do in this part of the park, including three  attractions , several dining outlets and a handful of shops.

Liberty Square Rides & Other Attractions

Haunted mansion.

Jump in a slow-moving Doom Buggy and set out on a grave adventure through an eerie estate on the Haunted Mansion. With your Ghost Host as your guide, this spirited open house will transport you through several chilling scenes, such as Madame Leota’s séance room, a mind-bending chamber of staircases à la M.C. Escher, a haunted ballroom and a ghoulish graveyard. As one of the original 23 attractions available on the park’s  opening day , no trip to Magic Kingdom is complete without touring the Haunted Mansion.

The ride is so popular, in fact, that it can get very busy during the day. Luckily, there are tons of interactive activities in the queue to keep you busy while you wait, or simply pull up the Play Disney Parks  app  on your phone. Worried that it might be too scary for your little one? Although the attraction is dark and a bit spooky at times, the 999 happy haunts that call the Haunted Mansion home are friendly, making it a  must-do  for guests of all ages.

Liberty Belle Riverboat cruising through Frontierland in Magic Kingdom Park

Liberty Square Riverboat

Climb aboard the Liberty Belle, a steam-powered paddlewheeler, for a leisurely cruise down the Rivers of America on the Liberty Square Riverboat. This half-mile, 17-minute tour through Liberty Square and Frontierland encircles Tom Sawyer Island and echoes the voyage once made by those heading west at the start of the American frontier.

As you float down the Rivers of America, listen to tales of life along the mighty Mississippi, as told through the voice of American icon and author Mark Twain. Another of the park’s opening-day attractions (Ok, technically, it opened the day after, but who’s counting?), the  boat  ride is a relaxing way to see some of the themed lands in Magic Kingdom and rest your feet for a while.

Lightning Lane Availability:  None

The Hall of Presidents

Without a doubt, the heart of Liberty Square is The Hall of Presidents. Featuring three massive screens, a stirring film about the United States’ founding, and impressive audio-animatronics of our nation’s 45 presidents—Grover Cleveland was both the 22nd and 24th president—this immersive attraction is sure to put you in a patriotic mood. (Or put you to sleep. We’re not going to lie—the room is pretty dark and cozy, and the 25-minute show can get long.)

The Hall of Presidents is a great example of both Walt Disney’s love of country and inspiring ingenuity, as it builds upon his groundbreaking 1964 New York World’s Fair attraction: Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. Before the show, be sure to take some time to appreciate the many artifacts located in the waiting area, which is a federally recognized presidential museum.

You’ll also want to watch out for another important symbol of America’s history: the Seal of the President of the United States. In fact, in addition to the original Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, the attraction is the only other site outside the White House that is authorized to display the presidential seal—and it took an Act of Congress to make it happen. There’s even a gate around the seal to prevent people from walking on it.

Liberty Square Characters & Entertainment

We’ll be honest. There isn’t too much to do around this part of Magic Kingdom when it comes to entertainment or  Disney characters . Sadly, you can no longer see The Muppets Present… Great Moments in American History, which is a shame because it was charming, to say the least. That said, Mary Poppins has been known to hang out in the gazebo behind Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe in the past. So, it’s worth stopping by or checking the  My Disney Experience app  to see if she’s there.

One thing the land does offer, however, is pretty great views of the  Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade , as well as the park’s two  character cavalcades . The parade route runs from Frontierland and throughout Liberty Square before crossing the bridge out onto the Hub and exiting on Main Street, U.S.A.. So, if you’re in the area when one rolls past, be sure to take a break and enjoy the show.

7 totally cool things about liberty square riverboat at walt disney world.

Posted by: Jason Dick April 17, 2018

liberty-square-riverboat

Walt Disney World knows how to create nostalgia.  And a great example of this is the Liberty Square Riverboat in Disney’s Magic Kingdom.  It’s a beautiful, colonial, steam-powered riverboat, and it’ll instantly transport you to a simpler time, as you cruise along the Rivers of America.  Here are our favorite things about the Liberty Square Riverboat.

7. Come One, Come All

We love the exclusivity of the Liberty Square Riverboat!  Because it’s a slow-moving boat ride, there are no height or age restrictions, and it’s a family-friendly attraction.  It might not keep thrill-seekers entertained, but we think it’s a brilliant way to take a break from the chaos of a busy day in the parks.  Wheelchairs and ECVs can board the boat, and there is even sign language interpretation offered at certain times of the week.

6. Fun Facts

Spoilers ahead!  While the attraction is named the Liberty Square Riverboat, the vessel itself is called the Liberty Belle.  Your voyage will last around 20 minutes, and it will take you through the Rivers of America.  For those who are curious, the river is only about 6 feet deep, and the riverboat is actually on a track in the water, much like the boats on Jungle Cruise!  The water itself is dyed green, so that guests won’t be able to see the track, and have the magic ruined.

5. Unparalleled Views

Adventurers who want to explore Tom Sawyer Island can take the log raft over to the island and wander around to their hearts’ content.  But if you’re looking for the best views of Tom Sawyer Island, then you’ll want to ride the Liberty Belle!  The riverboat takes you around the entirety of Tom Sawyer Island, and along the way, you’ll also see unique views of several key Magic Kingdom attractions, including Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Splash Mountain and Haunted Mansion.

4. Delightful Decks

While you enjoy your journey on the Liberty Belle, you can choose from 4 decks to sit or stroll or explore.  The top deck, or pilothouse, contains the wheelhouse and Captain’s quarters.  Wander along the Promenade Deck to view photos and maps from a by-gone era, or enjoy the warm Floridian sun on the Sun Deck.  Of course, the real action is on the Main Deck, where you’ll find the workings of the boat itself, including the pistons that run the paddlewheel, and the boiler.  There’s a lot to explore on your river cruise!

3. Family of Riverboats

The Liberty Belle is in good company!  A riverboat named the Mark Twain debuted in Disneyland when it opened in 1955, and it was the first riverboat that had been build in the country in half a century.  Guests can now also enjoy riverboat attractions at Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris.  WDW originally had two riverboats, the Admiral Joe Fowler and the Richard F. Irvine; the latter changed its name to the Liberty Belle in the 1990s, and is now the sole riverboat in the Magic Kingdom.

2. Working Reproduction

History buffs and boat fans alike will enjoy learning about the Liberty Belle.  It’s almost 50 feet tall, with some beautifully crafted woodwork.  It’s actually a faithful replica of the types of boats that used to carry passengers up and down the Mississippi River, which means it’s a unique glimpse into the past.  How does it work?  The Liberty Belle’s steam engine turns water into steam, and it’s that steam that provides the power to turn the paddlewheel, which drives the boat.

1. Famous Voice

Your voyage on the Liberty Belle is narrated by several characters, and Disney fans might recognize one of the recorded voices: it’s none other than Thurl Ravenscroft, the famous voice behind Tony the Tiger (of Frosted Flakes fame).  Thurl provided the speaking and singing voices for many iconic Disney rides – you’ve probably heard his voice many times, even if you didn’t realize it!  He voiced the lead bust in Haunted Mansion, various voices in the Enchanted Tiki Room, Buff in the Country Bear Jamboree, and multiple pirates in Pirates of the Caribbean!

HAUNTING HINTS: In the interactive portion of the queue for the Haunted Mansion, you’ll be able to spot a wedding ring embedded in the ground. Near the crypt that sprays water, you’ll see a trash can — the ring is stuck in the pavement on the ground near the trash can. This was actually added after so many fans claimed a flush metal pipe in the ground of the original queue was a wedding ring belonging to the bride inside the ride (it wasn’t, but they added it for real later on!).

HAUNTING HINTS: In the  Haunted Mansion queue , there’s also a little “who done it” mystery played out with a collection of busts near the front of the queue and the rhyming plaques underneath them.

More Magic in Liberty Square

DID YOU KNOW? The live oak tree in Liberty Square is over 100 years old . Hanging from its branches are 13 lanterns to represent the original 13 colonies. This tree was found on Disney World property and transplanted to this location!

liberty square riverboat disney world

Liberty Square Oak Tree

DID YOU KNOW? Take a look up at the windows of the buildings in Liberty Square to find a window with 2 lanterns on display. This is a nod to Paul Revere and his famous midnight ride as a possible signal to alert the Colonial soldiers the way by which the British soldiers were coming to attack: “One, if by land, and two, if by sea.” (One lantern would be displayed if the attack was coming by land, two lanterns if coming by sea.)

DID YOU KNOW? While you’re walking through Liberty Square, you should also look DOWN. The brown pathway that you see is meant to represent the (ahem) waste that used to flow through the streets during colonial times, considering that indoor plumbing didn’t exist during the era portrayed.

liberty square riverboat disney world

Liberty Square’s (ahem) Brown Pathway

P.S. This is also why there are no restrooms in Magic Kingdom’s Liberty Square. Since public restrooms didn’t exist in colonial times, all the restrooms in this area are just outside of the boundaries of the land.

Liberty Square Shopping and Merchandise

Fans of the Haunted Mansion (and who isn’t?) MUST pay a visit to Memento Mori .

Liberty Square (Haunted Mansion, Liberty Square Riverboat, Hall of Presidents)

Liberty Square (Haunted Mansion, Liberty Square Riverboat, Hall of Presidents)

Hear ye! Hear ye!

It is time to explore Liberty Square, which you can find in Magic Kingdom situated between Frontierland and Fantasyland .

Liberty Square is home to an opening-day attraction — Haunted Mansion. Plus, this is the land to visit if you want to hear (or take a nap while) all of the presidents’ of the United States speak, ride the Liberty Belle, or get a waffle covered in fresh fruit and chocolate-hazelnut spread.

You can also see a replica of the Liberty Bell.

Warning : make sure you don’t step in the sewage. Ok, it’s not real sewage, but if you look down while you’re walking in Liberty Square you’ll see a brown cement river.

liberty square sewage river at magic kingdom

This represents back during colonial times when they would dump buckets of sewage in the streets due to indoor plumbing not existing yet. Disney really nails it with all of the details, don’t they?

Now that you know that fun fact, here’s everything you need to know about Liberty Square!

In this article

  • On the Disney Dining Plan?  Yes, 1 table service credit
  • Pros:  Delicious Thanksgiving-style food
  • Cons:  During busier times, waits can be long even with a reservation

Liberty Tree Tavern is an all-you-care-to-enjoy Table Service meal.

The restaurant is designed to embody a colonial-style inn that serves traditional New England-inspired fare.

You get a lot of food here, but it’s also very good.

There is a plant-based Impossible meatloaf served with mashed potatoes, mushroom gravy, and seasonal vegetables.

You can also order the standard Patriot’s Platter, which features roasted turkey, Pennsylvania pot roast, and oven-roasted pork with mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables, herb stuffing, and house-made macaroni and cheese.

Dessert is just as good as the meal. Liberty Tree Tavern is known for it’s Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake: vanilla toffee cake, chocolate sauce, and vanilla ice cream.

Yes, it’s as amazing as it looks.

There is also a plant-based dessert, Johnny Appleseed’s Warm Apple Cake with caramel and whipped topping.

Fun fact: Liberty Tree Tavern serves the same exact food as The Diamond Horseshoe.

The Diamond Horseshoe

Diamond Horseshoe

Location type:  Table Service Type of food:  American Meals Served:  Lunch and dinner

  • Pros:  Home-cooked comfort food served family style that usually appeals to the whole family
  • Cons:  Mediocre food quality

The Diamond Horseshoe is a family-style sit-down restaurant serving an all-you-can-eat holiday-inspired dinner inside an Old West music hall.

the diamond horseshoe seating area

The Table Service restaurant may have a different concept than Liberty Tree Tavern, but it serves the exact same food. Pricing is also the same.

the diamond horseshoe

The menu items simply have different names. For example, instead of the “Patriot’s Platter” that’s served at Liberty Tree Tavern, The Diamond Horseshoe offers the “Saloon Feast.”

If you’re hoping to eat at Liberty Tree Tavern, try snagging a reservation at The Diamond Horseshoe or vice versa. You will simply have different theming, but get to eat the same meal.

Seating Areas

There are several areas to rest your feet in Liberty Square. Some of these spots even offer great views of parades and cavalcades.

These benches are located before the bridge that leads into Liberty Square. But, keep in mind sometimes these are reserved.

Something WEIRD Is Going On With Crowds in Disney World Right Now

liberty square riverboat disney world

So, this is weird. We’re in the middle of spring break season in Florida . The city of Miami sent a stern word of warning to spring breakers this year, and D isney experts cautioned friends and family to avoid Disney World this time of year . What’s the big deal about spring break, and why is everyone so worried about it?

liberty square riverboat disney world

Typically, we see some BIG crowds in the parks and resorts around spring break . Teachers and students have a little vacation time, the warm (but not too warm) weather is particularly appealing , and college students have a break from their busy semester. Seems like the perfect time to take a vacation to Disney World, right? Well, for a while, that’s what everyone thought.

Disney Vacation Planner

In fact, Disney World itself was preparing for big crowds throughout March. Two of the Annual Passholder tiers — the Pixie Dust Pass and Pirate Pass — are “blocked out” for the remainder of March.

liberty square riverboat disney world

Disney reserves the right to create blockout dates during “peak and holiday periods” for these two levels of Annual Passes, meaning you can’t use your Annual Pass to get into the parks if blocked out. Clearly, with all those blockout dates on the calendar, Disney considers March the “peak” season.

liberty square riverboat disney world

With all this in mind, you probably have a picture in your mind of what Disney World looks like right now. Are you imagining wall-to-wall crowds? Wait times in the triple digits? Well, you may be surprised to hear that this photo was taken in the middle of spring break. Yep, Magic Kingdom hasn’t been as busy as many expected.

liberty square riverboat disney world

We’ve seen the Tower of Terror wait time as low as 35 minutes in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. If you’re unfamiliar, this ride can see 2+ hour wait times if the park is especially busy, so 35 minutes is a GREAT time for one of the park’s most popular attractions.

liberty square riverboat disney world

So, what’s the deal? Where are all the crowds? Well, perhaps all those blockout dates are working. We have a feeling that with TWO levels of Annual Passes blocked from Disney World, there are significantly fewer people visiting the parks right now.

liberty square riverboat disney world

Plus, Disney World will soon see a spike in crowds thanks to some upcoming cheer and dance competitions at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. These events are set to happen between April 26th through April 29th. Right now, the EPSN Wide World of Sports is pretty quiet, as there aren’t any major competitions happening until April. Could this be the calm before the storm?

liberty square riverboat disney world

It seems like Disney fans are staying away from the parks during spring break! Between the lack of Annual Passholders in the parks and the shockingly low wait times, it’s clear spring break isn’t so bad after all.

liberty square riverboat disney world

In the meantime, we’re always on the lookout for the latest Disney news, so stay tuned for more.

The Absolute Chillest Rides at Disney World

If you’re looking to relax and take a break from the chaos of Disney, serene entertainment can be found in each of the four Disney World parks: Magic Kingdom Park, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. Excluding animatronic shows, walk-through attractions, and rides geared specifically for children, here are the chillest rides you’ll find at the park.

Jungle Cruise

One of the adorably campy opening day attractions at Magic Kingdom, Jungle Cruise is basically a super-sized lazy river, captained by pithy guides making dad jokes as you sail by hilariously outdated animatronics. The innate silliness of Jungle Cruise is the whole point of the ride, which has no thrills to speak of, but boasts a cult following for the jokester narrators and the relaxed pace of the journey. It doesn’t hurt that each of the boats is covered and shaded, providing shelter from the sun as you float through rivers inspired by Asia, Africa, and South America.

Spaceship Earth

The marquis attraction in Disney World’s second park, you might know Spaceship Earth as the giant golf ball-looking orb in front of EPCOT. The dark ride attraction takes place within the massive geodesic sphere, providing visitors with a tour through time—but at a slow pace, set to the soothing narration of Dame Judi Dench. Spaceship Earth is all about tracing human history and ingenuity, as ride vehicles inch their way from the Stone Age through the Renaissance (sadly not the Beyoncé one ), with an emphasis on pivotal moments of invention like the printing press, alphabet, and Internet. The whole experience is quite lovely and fascinating, and it’s a welcome reprieve that usually has one of the shortest lines in the park.

The Haunted Mansion

Aside from the ghoulish name—and the fact that some of the resident ghosts casually joke about committing murder with a hatchet—the Haunted Mansion is a Disney World keystone that’s about as chill as it gets. Another opening day attraction at Magic Kingdom, it’s been a requisite ride since 1971, and families still queue up for one of the most enduringly beloved features in the OG park. Once you get over the pitch-black creepiness of the “stretching room,” wherein a crowd of strangers is plunged into abrupt darkness before embarking towards the boarding area, The Haunted Mansion is relaxing, fun, campy, and—perhaps most importantly—an air conditioned break from the heat outside. Once you board your “Doom Buggy,” you’re off on a silly, slow-moving romp through the dark manor, as playful ghosts sing and dance and joke about death.

Liberty Square Riverboat

Despite being a giant, impossible-to-miss boat chugging its way around Frontierland, the Liberty Square Riverboat is ironically one of the most overlooked attractions in Magic Kingdom. The giant paddleboat ride takes guests on a slow, peaceful loop around the Rivers of America, providing unique vantage points from which to view Big Thunder Mountain and Tom Sawyer’s Island, along with kitschy scenery and settings depicting frontier life. The whole slow-moving ride takes about 17 minutes to complete, and the multi-story boat features plenty of rooms and alcoves where you can unwind in the shade as you soak in the views.

Kilimanjaro Safaris

It may be a tad bumpy at times, but the engaging journey of Animal Kingdom’s Kilimanjaro Safaris is all about utter immersion and enthralling landscapes. It’s the most thrilling chill ride there is, in that the rush of excitement doesn’t come from steep drops or dazzling technology, but rather from real live animals roaming in a savanna-like landscape so huge that this single attraction is larger than all of Magic Kingdom. Rides take about 20 minutes, and are conducted on huge open-air safari vehicles driven by insightful and funny guides. It’s kind of like a real-deal Jungle Cruise, but vastly bigger and more impressive. Altogether, you might see 30 species of African animals, like giraffes, zebras, crocodiles, elephants, ostriches, lions, and more.

Walt Disney World Railroad

A real blast from Americana past and inspired by Walt Disney’s personal love for trains, the Walt Disney World Railroad is another Magic Kingdom attraction that’s less of a ride, and more of a chill sightseeing experience. Basically the opposite of Disney’s futuristic monorail, the railroad is comprised of four restored narrow gauge steam trains that take guests on a giant 1.5-mile loop around the park. Each outing lasts about 20 minutes, offering a fresh perspective on Magic Kingdom as the train winds its way around Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, and Main Street, USA. Boarding stations can be found in Fantasyland, Frontierland, and by the park entrance.

Gran Fiesta Tour

A true hidden gem in EPCOT, due largely to the fact that it’s literally hidden inside a pyramid in the Mexico Pavilion, Gran Fiesta Tour is the ideal ride for when you just can’t deal with other humans. The musical water ride features boats meandering through Mexico with Donald Duck and the Three Caballeros. It’s got some It’s a Small World vibes, but the music legitimately slaps, and the kaleidoscopic set dressing is luminous and fun. Tucked in the very back of the pyramid, behind the San Angel Inn Restaurante and under a perpetually moonlit sky, most folks don’t even know this ride exists, ensuring that the line will be a breeze and you’ll be floating along with Donald Duck in no time.

Alien Swirling Saucers

Home to Disney World’s most intense attractions, like Tower of Terror, the Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster, and Rise of the Resistance, Disney’s Hollywood Studios is probably the least chill of all the parks. When it comes to relaxing ambience here, it’s mostly confined to shows, like Fantasmic! and Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage. The closest you really get to a chill ride here is Alien Swirling Saucers, a kind of spinning teacups-style ride in Toy Story Land that features cool arcade-looking decor and the cute aliens from the movies. It’s not as simple and slow as some of the other attractions on this list, but it’s an all-ages ride that’s still straightforward and delightful. And it’s the chillest ride you’ll find if you’re in Hollywood Studios and looking for a break.

Living with the Land

Unless you get an adrenaline rush from horticulture, it doesn’t get any less thrilling than Living with the Land, the kind of gentle boat ride that typifies EPCOT’s origins as the edutainment park. Basically the antithesis of a roller coaster, this indoor boat tour attraction is a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at greenhouses, hydroponic farms, and crops from across the globe—some of which are used in nearby Disney World restaurants Sunshine Seasons and Garden Grill.

Na’vi River Journey

In the Avatar -themed Pandora section at Animal Kingdom, Flight of Passage whisks riders on an otherworldly multi-sensory journey atop the backs of banshees. And then there’s the comparatively far calmer Na’vi River Journey, which is basically Living with the Land on another planet. The dark indoor ride features slow-paced boats navigating the Kasvapan River and the bioluminescent rainforest. The colorful sights and sounds are mesmerizing, culminating with some mystical tunes from the Na’vi Shaman of Songs. The whole experience feels like if your ambient white noise machine was a ride.

Peter Pan’s Flight

If you enjoy the dulcet tones of pirates and sword fights, set inside a dark environment lit up with London scenery and lost boys, then you’ll love Peter Pan’s Flight. Similar to other attractions that opened in 1971, this preserved-in-time relic is endearingly ridiculous with its hilarious animatronics, but that’s half the fun. The other half is the opportunity to slowly and gently “fly” from London to Neverland, watching characters like Peter Pan, Wendy, Captain Hook, and Smee. The ride itself, all indoors and mercifully cool, is rather brief, but it’s a timeworn gem that’s as chill as it is nostalgic. Want more Thrillist?
