Came in off of an advertised special... chartplotter with a chip. Got the unit home and no chip. After reaching out this morning I got nothing but attitude from some kid answering the phones. Basically, pound sand. Asked for the owner, Ernie, and got the same response. Left contact info and will see if Ernie calls back. Ernie, get the kid off of the phone... horrible attitude and bad for customer retention. Kid, if you are making Minney's your career move, get better at your job.

Minney's rocks!! If they have what you need, you know you've scored on a deal... We go there for little parts for old boats and for big things like when we had to rebuild the head...completely in love :)

Skip the hardware store or West Marine. If you need anything (screw, shackle, bracket, hook, latch, etc) in stainless steel you can find it here at a huge discount..

I was in the market for a decent used spinnaker, and found one listed here for a reasonable price -- particularly considering they were running a 30% off special. I narrowed my choices down to two sails. Chuck sent pictures of the two sails promptly. I chose the better of the two -- a radial-head rated as a 7. In comparison, another loft wanted three times as much for a sail with patches and stains and no bag. The sail arrived today. I am thrilled with the condition -- a nice, clean sail with minimal signs of use which even included a turtle bag. Now, the turtle bag shows some signs of age and I don't think it's original to the sail, but it was a bonus, and I have no complaints whatsoever. Unlike some other outfits I've dealt with, Minney's doesn't gouge on shipping. For around $200, I've got a sail that should give good service for many years. I will certainly give these guys my business in the future.

Whoa. I sail very little, but often go browsing this place for ideas and inspiration. Beware, you may leave this place with ideas of adventure, so take caution and set a budget. If you're going to browse, check out the map room upstairs where almost every map there is $1.95. You'll leave with an armful 3 hours laer. (true story) Also, they have buckets of stainless hardware that can cost a fortune brand new. Great place for the guy with a garage and a short DIY list.

I wonder if the guy answering the phone is high? and then he put his mom on and she was confused too. wow.

great business, 100% legit. Minney is a stand up guy. Nothing bad to say about this great establishment.

Minney's is the jam. Great people, always super helpful. The price is always right and they have great inventory.

I purchased a sail that didn't work out. Minney's staff took care of it like the class act they are! I would absolutely do business with Minney's again. Jeff J.

Big selection of used boat gear. "Chuck" helped me but he was mostly bad attitude and short. I do not want to leave the impression that I was unhappy with the selection or prices.....but Chuck needs to polish up his customer skills. The other employees were fine and easy to speak with. In the end I found what I needed and the prices were fair enough. I just hate being walked on and spending money...

Minney’s is a family-owned business, started by Ernie Minney back in 1969, who proudly touts his “We keep boating affordable!” motto. Specializing in used sails at steeply discounted prices, Minney himself personally measures, inspects and guarantees total satisfaction on every one of the thousands of vintage sails in stock, with prices ranging from $50 to $1,500 max (even on sails worth upwards of $30,000 elsewhere).

But sails are just the tip of the iceberg. You’ll find three stories and room after room after room of assorted parts, oars, tools, motors, dock cleats, rudders, propellers, vintage cowl vents, decals, life vests and rings, compasses and Minney’s massive collection of antique nautical maps, which are ripe for framing and cost less than TWO DOLLARS. And don’t miss their collection of whimsical pirate- and tiki-themed goodies available for rent in the far corners of the cavernous shop.

With hidden rooms filled with slabs of used wood and planks, odd metal bits and colorful ropes available by the pound, Minney’s has been an artist’s and designer’s secret stash for years. Whether you’re looking for a unique piece to add to your home decor or that discontinued vintage knob for the door to your yacht, Minney’s has it.

Sea Gypsies camp out at local boating supply goods shop, Minney’s Yacht Surplus

minney's yacht surplus

A group of seafaring explorers stocked up for their planned record-breaking sailing excursion at a beloved Newport Beach sailing supply store.

NEWPORT BEACH — Newport Beach’s Minney’s Yacht Surplus, considered to be royalty within the local boating supply scene, hosted a very special guest leading into the weekend of March 9 – a crewmember from a rag-tag group of modern sailors known as the Sea Gypsies.

The Sea Gypsies are a sailing community who navigate the world aboard their vessel, Infinity . Collectively they make up Infinity Expedition and have sailed the seas since 2004. Infinity Expedition, as it turns out, is embarking on one of its most daring expeditions yet: As you read these words, the Sea Gypsies are attempting to sail farther north than any ship in recorded history.

A white, snow-capped no-man’s land, the Sea Gypsies will battle Mother Nature’s natural elements as they foray into a mostly unexplored territory through the Northern Pass. Such an endeavor would certainly qualify as a trip even the most experienced sailors and rugged outdoorsmen would not endeavor lightly. However, with Capt. Clemens Oestreich at the helm, the Sea Gypsies are determined to break the sailing record. Oestreich is a European native and an experienced sailor.

Ernie Minney, the owner and founder of Minney’s Yacht Supply, told The Log Infinity Expedition purchased “thousands of dollars” worth of inventory to stock up for the planned northern excursion. A crewmember named Grace camped out on his premises for about four days, Minney added.

Minney had the chance to interview Grace and posted a video of the conversation online. The video can be found on YouTube or the blog section of Minney’s Yacht Surplus official website.

In the video, Minney narrates as he records Grace packing up boxes and boxes of supplies said to be leaving in a container from Long Beach and shipped to the Marshall Islands.

Infinity is crewed by a close-knit family of 20, including children. The Infinity website features a section dedicated to the crew, providing personal background and explaining the quirkier parts of their character.

Infinity ’s crew is not exclusive. The bravest explorers could also join the crew in a work-trade agreement. The one-time membership costs 1,200 Euros. A meal plan, which includes basic vegan fare, costs 20 Euros a day. Fuel for the ship is also included in the daily costs.

The Log was able to contact Oestreich despite Infinity currently navigating in regions not as easily accessible by phone or email.

Oestreich said when Infinity Expedition launched in 2004 in San Diego a friend recommended he give Minney’s a try.

“We’ve been shopping at Minney’s for around a dozen years now,” Oestreich stated. “This time we bought used sails, winch handles, several large blocks, a hydraulic motor that will power our anchor winch, a spare dripless bearing for the engine shaft, a hatch and plenty of rope. Minney also allowed us to use their yard for a mad, last-minute shopping spree that we did in southern LA for specific boat parts and food. Our crewmember Grace actually camped in Minney’s backyard for four days.”

The purchased provisions will join the Infinity crew at the Marshall Islands, where the Sea Gypsies will then turn north and head toward the Arctic.

“Everything we bought in California is being shipped to Majuro in the Marshall Islands from where we begin our next expedition and film,” Oestreich said. “The upcoming voyage will take us to Dutch Harbour, Alaska first and then from west to east through the Northwest Passage to Greenland and as far north as a sailing ship can sail. We hope to break a sailing north world record, which due to global-warming-related ice melts in the Arctic may be possible.”

In a culmination of a bold and fearless journey, Oestreich hopes Infinity Expedition will be able to stage a special event.

“We will also stage an event on the northern ice cap aiming to inspire people to change for a sustainable common future on our communal spaceship, Earth,” Oestreich continued.

The local boating legends at Minney’s Yacht Surplus wish the Sea Gypsies well on their next epic adventure after doing their part to ensure they are looted up for the upcoming months traversing up towards the northern caps of the earth. For those who crave nautical voyages beyond the typical, those of Infinity Expedition are hard-pressed to be beaten.

The Infinity Expedition crew, coincidentally, made an award-winning documentary about their nautical adventures, sailing through some of the most tumultuous waters in the world on a mission “to pursue profound personal change, striving for sustainability, inner peace and love.”

The trailer for the film, “Sea Gypsies — The Far Side of the World,” can be viewed on their website. Minney, who mentions he is a fan in his YouTube video with Grace, stated he owns and watches the film regularly.

Minney's yacht surplus - boating treasures for less, poking around here is like rummaging around a sailor's attic..

I discovered Miney’s Yacht Surplus  due to a boating accident. As I turned up the basin, to sail back into my Marina del Rey slip, the wind shifted. I gave the helm of my sloop to my first mate so I could I trim the sails. One of the sheets got hung up so I had to free it.

At her cry I looked up to realize that we were heading directly toward the side of a large yacht. I dashed forward to the bow and couldn’t quite fend off. The impact folded my bow pulpit like a smile. Luckily the other boat escaped without damage.

“Today there are fiberglass boats on the water that have lasted for decades that are still in good shape. Where do you go to get a part for a boat that isn’t made any more?” asked Josh Minney, the manager of Minney’s Yacht Surplus.

Find out what's happening in Marina Del Rey with free, real-time updates from Patch.

Minney is the third generation of his family to work in the store. It was founded 42 years ago by his grandfather, George who was the owner of California Cruises, a charter operation. The yacht surplus business grew out of that venture. Soon the elder Minney involved his son, Ernie, who still works there.

Despite graduation from Northeastern University in Boston, Minney has returned to his Southern California roots. “I grew up sailing here,” he said. “My first boat was a Cal 20 sloop.”

“The trick to finding a good chandlery  is finding knowledgeable staff,” Minney said.

Walking around Minney’s is like a tour through a nautical museum. Antique brass fixtures stand next to odd parts that can’t be found elsewhere. It’s possible to get lost for hours, browsing through the charts of distant destinations, looking for that just right wheel or ship’s clock, or picking up cruising essentials like line or chain. I even found some classic, deep-sea fishing reels on my most recent visit.

“We’re particularly proud of our sail inventory,” Minney said. To prove his point, he asked about my boat and pointed to three sails in stock, ready to go, that were about a third of the cost that new sails would be. The store's sail inventory is listed online .

David Price has been a customer of Minney’s for so long that he started shopping there before Josh was born. Price was there to sell a load of gear.

“These people are very easy to deal will, which is why I keep coming back,” Price said “We try to price everything fairly,” Minney said. “Our motto is ‘We Keep Boating Affordable’ "

That’s welcome news since I’ve often noticed that labeling an item "nautical" as opposed to "automotive" raises the selling price significantly.

Price told me that the best deal for customers when they are selling gear to Minney’s is to opt for payment in store credit. “Their secret is buying low and selling low, paying 10 cents on the dollar selling it for 20 cents.”  Price said.

As for me, after my collision I found a bow pulpit for my boat at Minney’s that cost me hundreds less than a new one would have run. That is the real reason that Minney’s is worth the drive. You’ll get steered right and can save big.

The bourgeois charm of Siberia's oil capital

minney's yacht surplus

If you’re driving west across Russia from the Pacific Ocean, the first thing that you notice upon entering the city of Tyumen is the McDonalds. Tyumen has long been one of the only Siberian cities with a McDonalds restaurant. Although the fast-food giant has plans to open locations in nearby Novosibirsk and other regional cities, Siberia still contains one of the longest distances on earth outside of Africa where you can remain on a major highway and not see a McDonalds. Until you reach Tyumen, that is.

A stop in Tyumen provides an interesting glimpse into how modern Russia’s oil revenue has influenced Siberia’s oldest Russian city. Tyumen is a great stopover point on the Trans-Siberian Railroad and a short ride from Yekaterinburg (five hours) or Tobolsk (four hours).

In the 16th century, Russia started expanding eastward into parts of Central Asia ruled by the Tatars, an Islamic people who still live thoughout Russia. A band of Cossacks wrested control of Tyumen from the Tatars in 1580. Six years later, Russians established a fort in Tyumen on the Tura River.

For centuries, Tyumen vied with the nearby city of Tobolsk—once the official capital of Siberia—for the prestige of the region’s most important city. Tyumen won in the end, when the Trans-Siberian Railroad bypassed Tobolsk and was routed through this now oil-rich city.

Tyumen played an important role in Russian history during times of war. At the beginning of the Russian Civil War, the Bolshevik Red Army slowly pushed the White Army, commanded by Admiral Alexander Kolchak, into Siberia. Kolchak and his anti-Bolshevik forces holed up in Tyumen until the Red Army overtook them in January of 1918.

During the Second World War, many Russian industries were moved away from the front to Siberian cities. Tyumen had already become an industrial capital during the early Soviet era, and the city became an ideal spot to relocate Russia’s western factories. As Nazi forces approached Russia in 1941, the embalmed body of Vladimir Lenin was sent from the Lenin Mausoleum in Moscow’s Red Square by train to the Tyumen State Agricultural Academy for safekeeping. In 1945, Lenin’s body was shipped back to Moscow.

Some of the factories relocated to Tyumen during wartime remained in the city. The discovery of oil in the region catapulted Siberia’s oldest Russian settlement to further prosperity. Modern Tyumen is a vibrant city with a number of universities and a revamped center well-suited for exploration by foot.

Start your walking tour around central Tyumen on Ulitsa Respubliki. The city’s main drag has fine pedestrian walkways and leads wanderers past an impressive collection of tsarist-era buildings that recall Tyumen’s importance in the beginning of Russia’s colonization of Siberia.

From the southeastern end of Ul. Respubliki, head north toward the Tura River and take a brief side trip onto Ul. Ordzhonikidze to visit the Fine Arts Museum (47 Ul. Ordzhonikidze) which houses exhibits of classical Russian and Soviet art as well as traditional bone carving and works produced by the native people who live in the far north of Tyumen Oblast.

Back on Ul. Respubliki, you’ll soon see the city’s requisite Lenin statue by the local government buildings. A block away, opposite Lenin, is Tyumen’s city park, a delightful place to walk or hop on one of its amusement rides.

Most Siberian cities developed under the watchful eyes of the atheist Soviet regime and churches are usually not Siberia’s strongpoint. But this isn’t true in four-centuries-old Tyumen. Strolling up Ul. Respubliki, you’ll soon come to the Church of the Saviour (41 Ul. Lenina) and the Znamensky Cathedral (13 Ul. Semakova). Each of these stunning Baroque-influenced churches are located right off Ul. Respubliki and were built in the late 18th century.

Tyumen is also famous for its historic wooden houses. Heading further up Ul. Respubliki, stop to wander around some of the side streets and snap photos of these ornate wooden structures which provide a glimpse back in time. Near the Tura River, you’ll pass a civil war monument in remembrance of the Tyumen natives who died fighting the White Army and the Tyumen State Agricultural Academy (7 Ul. Respubliki) an impressive building in its own right where Lenin was stored during the Second World War.

Near the end of Ul. Respubliki, take a walk over the Tura River on the Lover’s Bridge, a suspension bridge open to foot traffic only that has become one of Tyumen’s iconic sights. The other side of the river is a great place to see more of Tyumen’s signature wooden houses as well as take in the churches scattered around the city center.

Save the best for last and visit the Trinity Monastery (10 Ul. Kommunisticheskaya) at the end of Ul. Respubliki. A white wall surrounds the monastery, giving it the appearance of a mini-kremlin, and the golden onion domes of the 18th century churches within should not be missed.

Although navigating Tyumen is straightforward enough, the St. Petersburg-based travel company OSTWEST can arrange a city tour in Tyumen and the surrounding countryside.
