Powerboat Nation Back With Original Owner
After a brief run under the umbrella of Southern California-based Speedboat magazine , Powerboat Nation is back with US Investment Holdings, its original owners group based in Delaware. The return of the popular online portal serving the high-performance powerboating community to its founders is yet another result of the economic fallout created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Videos are an integral aspects of Powerboat Nation’s content offerings.
Launched eight years ago, the multifacted website offered a deep array of editorial content. Yet it was perhaps best known for an extensive selection of high-quality go-fast boating videos with subjects ranging from poker run coverage to do-it-yourself projects.
“While we were excited and had hoped that Powerboat Nation would thrive under its new owners, it just never grabbed hold as the site struggled to find consistency in content and editorial,” said a spokesperson for US Investment Holdings. “That Speedboat could no longer continue its ownership role with Powerboat Nation is, of course, unfortunate.
“Adapting to the accelerated pace of a daily or even weekly content-based website has to be challenging enough for print-based publishers, but the economic hardships delivered by the coronavirus crisis made a challenging situation even more so,” he continued. “In the end, they decided to walk away from the deal.”
Ray Lee, who co-publishes Speedboat magazine with Chris Davidson, said the decision was a must for the publication’s long-estabiished media identity.
“Frankly, it was very challenging for us between the two brands,” he said. “It confused the public and so we couldn’t get a strong foothold on the best direction for each—which I think caused both brands to suffer. Going forward, we are going to focus fully on our print publication Speedboat Magazine and make it the best it possibly can be.”
At present US Investment Holdings is considering its options, according to the spokesman, for the future of Powerboat Nation. US Investment Holdings also owns and operates Powerboat1.com , a rapidly expanding, video-based do-it-yourself website launched in late 2019.

The Lure of Powerboating
by Ted Kreiter (from The Saturday Evening Post Nov/Dec ’91)
The boats get more powerful every year, but the true test remains man against the sea.
The Nordskog name has become synonymous with power-boating. Son Gerald publishes Powerboat magazine, while Bob Nordskog continues to race (below) in his Super Vee.
Powerboats come in all sizes, and the owners and drivers are equally diverse. They range from President George Bush and former football quarterback Joe Theismann to the cast of the “Miami Vice” television series and top officials of giant corporations. All, however, have one thing in common—to go as fast as they can with the boat that’s under them without it ending up on top of them.
A good case in point is George Bush, whose 28-foot Cigarette boat, Fidelity, can reach speeds of 50-plus mph. Bush loves to drive all out, and finds great sport in outmaneuvering his Secret Service guards. To keep up with him, the agents use bigger 36-foot chase boats. Unfortunately, their boats take such a pounding that the men who never smile have blown an undisclosed number of engines. Now, they’re trying a different tactic—sturdier engines. Meanwhile, Bush is having the time of his life.
Fortunately for the Secret Service, Bush does not own a Superboat. These behemoths of the powerboat racing set can reach upward of 150 miles per hour and require crews of six to operate. At such speeds, they make powerboat racing one of the more dangerous sports, but for die-hard powerboat competitors, the thrill outweighs the risks. “Racing is living and dying in three-quarter time,” one boat racer has said. “You can experience, in the span of one day, defeat, humiliation, joy, excitement, and ecstasy.”
Few powerboat racers understand this better than Bob Nordskog, a corporate executive who has been racing powerboats since the 1940s and at age 78 is still making waves.
The Californian’s penchant for speed and danger began in his teens. He flew solo in a WWI biplane at age 13. At 14, he was wing walking and parachute jumping. At 22 he modified a Model T Ford and set a land-speed record of 125 mph. The record still stands.
Nordskog’s first racing boat, a 15-foot Lux-or ski boat, promptly barrel-rolled and sank, but that early setback did not dampen his competitive spirit. “As a boy, I was an extreme introvert,” Nordskog explains. “People intimidated me. So I was determined to excel.”
Today Nordskog’s extraordinary record includes 125 wins in 12 different boating divisions; 47 victories in offshore boating alone (the last three just this year). In all he holds more offshore victories than any other driver in the history of the sport.
“If you race with Bob Nordskog you love him,” says Ed Atlas, a spokesperson for the American ‘Power Boat Offshore Racing Corn-mission. “If you race against him, you may not but you respect him.
“There are no records to substantiate this,” Atlas continues, “but he’s believed to be the only person. who has raced as fast as he has for as long as he has in any sport. And when you go out in the ocean for maybe a hundred miles and are hammered by waves for two hours, it can be pretty brutal. At his age, it probably even gets a little tougher.”
But Nordskog doesn’t mind the difficulties. In fact, he thrives on them. His favorite races were four nine-hour marathons in which he drove without a relief driver from start to finish, claiming two victories. In 1974, while still in a cast from a broken arm received in a racing accident, Nordskog set a speed record for offshore powerboats in the Annual Powerboat Magazine World Speed Trials held at Marina del Rey, California. The next year he returned and set the still-existing record for the nautical mile in an unsupercharged V-bottom.
“I believe my thinking controls my like him, destiny,” Nordskog says. “I have crashed several times, and each time that I am in the midst of the crash, my brain is concentrating on the best way to protect and save myself from injury or added injury.”
In Nordskog’s book, the race may go to the swiftest, but not necessarily to the guy with the most powerful boat. “I have always tried to be a winner,” he says, “but preferably without special exotic equipment; rather, with technique and capabilities of the human mind and body.”
A case in point was his race earlier this year at Corpus Christi with his friendly arch-rival Reggie Fountain of Fountain Powerboats. “Reggie has the biggest boat on our circuit and the fastest, most powerful one,” Atlas re-calls. “But it was all he could do to hold Nordskog off. Reggie’s comment afterward was, ‘Anytime you can beat Nordskog, you know you’ve done a good job, because he’s the best driver in the world.’
As a young man in the fledgling airline industry, Nordskog worked on aviator Amelia Ear-hart’s long-distance plane and on the legendary Howard Hughes’ famous around-the-world Lockheed 14. From the latter he learned the importance of determination to accomplish goals. “1 spent hours preparing myself for boat-racing challenges,” Nordskog says. “He taught me to never give up never, never, never.” That attitude, Nordskog says, has helped in his business life as well as in racing. The small company he started with a few simple machines in a Quonset hut in 1951, Nordskog Industries, Inc., is now a conglomerate with a dozen operating companies. Nordskog Inc. is the world’s largest manufacturer of airline galleys—inflight food-service systems—and a leading manufacturer of electrical industrial vehicles.
Somewhere along the line, Nordskog also managed to marry and have two children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. His main loves, however, remain speed and water—and his chief motivation the desire to win. “All my life, when I am faced with a challenge, I have a strong desire to overcome obstacles—and life dishes out many,” Nordskog says.
Of course, he admits, “There is bound to be a day when this will all be memories, but as I create them as I go along, it is the pleasure of knowing I have succeeded. That’s what keeps me going out to win again.”

- Intelligent and gorgeous design that kills your yen for matchy-matchy Reading Marie Claire Maison over stolen afternoons at the Alliance Fran?aise library in Santo Domingo was my ideal oasis from the grind of the sticky hot city and my leaky rental apartment (with matching leaky budget). Ports Of Call: River Hamble
‘No man ever steps in the same river twice’ observed Greek philosopher Heraclitus, which captures perfectly the essence of the energetic River Hamble. Mark Featherstone and Jo Moon revisit old haunts but discover new delights on a recent visit to this iconic maritime destination. The charming waters of the River Hamble rise near the medieval town of Bishop’s Waltham, gathering pace as the river passes through the numerous marinas and nature reserves scattered along its historic shore, before opening out 12 kilometres later into Southampton Water at Hamble-le-Rice. The river is renowned as a sailing mecca, but this

Orkney Boats – British Made Built to Last

HMS conducts an exclusive interview with Ben Davies, MD of Orkney Boats, on the joys and challenges of building this iconic, all-British breed of craft, which celebrated its 50th year of manufacture in 2023. Tell us about the thinking behind the new Orkney Pilothouse 25 and 27 models you’re bringing to market. What was the motivation behind the development of these two additions to the Orkney range? Orkney have always offered a larger Pilothouse model, previously the popular Pilothouse 24, which since being launched over 20 years ago, and after nearly 100 boats being built, had become a little long in the tooth and in need of an update.

Struggling Sports Illustrated inks deal to stay afloat following partnership
The owner of Sports Illustrated came to an agreement with digital media company Minute Media, officials said Monday, to operate the iconic magazine, two months after mass layoffs appeared to signal the publication's demise.
Authentic Brands, which also owns a host of clothing and lifestyle brands, purchased the sports magazine in 2019; it had been operated in recent years by publishers at The Arena Group.
Then in late January, Authentic Brands said it had terminated The Arena Group’s publishing license, leading to widespread staffing cuts.
Minute Media, best known for The Players’ Tribune and FanSided, said it's reached a deal with Authentic to keep Sports Illustrated going.
"Minute Media will oversee all digital and print editorial operations across the SI portfolio , which has been the industry leader in dedicated sports journalism for decades," Minute Media said in a statement .
"Minute Media plans to leverage its premium sports content expertise as well as its technology platform that powers the creation, global distribution and monetization of hundreds of digital content brands, to continue to grow the Sports Illustrated media business."
The magazine suffered a reputation blow late last year when it was disclosed that stories written by an artificial intelligence tool had been published.
“In Minute Media we have found a partner that will honor SI’s lauded legacy and exceed fan expectations for the future," Authentic Executive Vice Chairman Daniel W. Dienst said in a statement.
"As Minute Media shepherds the SI brand across a rapidly evolving media landscape, our priority at Authentic is — and has always been — to protect its journalistic integrity and longevity."
The agreement also included Authentic buying an undisclosed amount of equity in Minute Media.
Asaf Peled, the CEO and founder of Minute Media, called Sports Illustrated the "gold standard for sports journalism and has been for nearly 70 years."
"The weight and power of that distinction cannot be understated," Peled added. "At Minute Media, our focus will be to take that legacy into new, emerging channels enhancing visibility, commercial viability and sustainable impact, all while ensuring that the SI team is inspired to flourish in this new era of media."

- Casa Magazines Has Been Sold
Casa Magazines is officially changing hands. The West Village newsstand, beloved by glossy diehards, has been owned and operated by Mohammed Ahmed since it first opened on 12th Street and 8th Avenue in 1994. But Ahmed, now 73, is ready to retire and sold the shop earlier this year to Iconic Magazines, a small chain of magazine shops in lower Manhattan. “I know it’s time,” Ahmed said of the change in ownership.
The store, which survived the obliteration of print and the pandemic, will remain much the same, says Hemal Sheth of Iconic, who is a friend of Ahmed’s. Shop manager Ali Wasim will continue to run it day to day and the approach to inventory will continue to be fairly obsessive. “It will be in good hands,” Ahmed says.
Casa feels like a rarity in the digital era: a haven for the fashion completists looking for this month’s Vogue Italia , cyclists after a copy of Rouleur , or people just looking for the Sunday edition of the New York Times . The shop still carries more than 2,500 titles, including this magazine, and owes its longevity, at least in part, to Happy David, a friend of Ahmed’s who helped start an Instagram for Casa in 2017. The account helped secure its status as an institution, raising its profile to locals, tourists, and influencers. The effort paid off and Casa became, in addition to print’s last brick-and-mortar gasp, kind of cool. Valentino and Madewell have done events and brand partnerships with the shop, and in 2021, it was featured in the Times ’ “Style” section.
Ahmed will miss the “daily routine and the smell and feel of the store,” he says, but is ready to spend time with family. (He will also continue to be involved behind the scenes from time to time.) The mission, Sheth told me last month, is simple: “We are trying to help people buy magazines.”

Sources say that Minute Media intends to bring over much if not all of the SI staff, though the company is just taking over operations today and needs to take stock of where things stand with the publication. The deal also includes the SI swimsuit edition, and SI for Kids .
“We have said from the start that our top priorities are to keep Sports Illustrated alive, uphold the legacy of the institution and protect our union jobs. We look forward to discussing a future with Minute Media that does that,” said Emma Baccellieri, staff writer for SI and vice chair for the SI Union, in a statement.
ABG, which is in the brand licensing business, acquired SI in 2019, and has been licensing the name for products and goods (including hotels and sports books), while selling the publishing rights to Arena Group. However, Arena failed to make a critical payment, triggering a clause allowing ABG to seek other partners.
“In Minute Media we have found a partner that will honor SI’s lauded legacy and exceed fan expectations for the future,” ABG executie vice chairman Daniel W. Dienst added. “As Minute Media shepherds the SI brand across a rapidly evolving media landscape, our priority at Authentic is — and has always been — to protect its journalistic integrity and longevity. Minute Media has successfully proven that they are leading the way in a new era of sports storytelling, and we are excited and optimistic about this partnership and the future of Sports Illustrated as the preeminent lens into sport.”

Sports Illustrated’s owner announces new publisher amid turmoil
Sports Illustrated has found a new publisher, the company’s owner announced Monday, ending months of uncertainty over who would operate the storied sports publication. The new publisher is Minute Media, a London-based digital media company that publishes a number of websites, including the Players’ Tribune.
Minute Media takes over publishing Sports Illustrated from the Arena Group, which held those rights for five years and lurched from controversy to controversy, including undergoing several rounds of layoffs , publishing product reviews written by artificial intelligence and, earlier this year, laying off the entire unionized workforce of SI .
Minute Media is not acquiring SI but rather licensing the publishing rights from SI’s owner, Authentic Brands Group, a brand ownership firm that owns the intellectual property of celebrities such as Elvis Presley and Shaquille O’Neal. Minute Media will now decide the fates of around 80 staffers as it charts a path forward for SI. A spokesperson for Minute Media said the company would meet with SI leadership in the coming weeks to determine which staffers will be offered employment with Minute Media.
Dan Dienst, an executive vice chairman at Authentic, said in a statement: “In Minute Media we have found a partner that will honor SI’s lauded legacy and exceed fan expectations for the future. As Minute Media shepherds the SI brand across a rapidly evolving media landscape, our priority at Authentic is — and has always been — to protect its journalistic integrity and longevity.”
A new publisher could help stabilize SI after several tumultuous months, multiple staffers told The Washington Post. In January, the Arena Group missed a scheduled payment to Authentic, part of the licensing fee it paid to publish SI. Authentic responded by revoking the publishing license, and Arena issued layoff notices to all of the unionized staff. Their last days were scheduled to be at the end of April.
While staffers awaited their fates, Authentic spent the past several months negotiating a new publishing license. The company’s CEO, Jamie Salter, told The Post last month he was considering four proposals , including continuing its partnership with Arena. But that became increasingly untenable because of the deterioration of the relationship between Authentic and Arena’s largest shareholder, Manoj Bhargava, the founder of 5-Hour Energy.
“We have said from the start that our top priorities are to keep Sports Illustrated alive, uphold the legacy of the institution and protect our union jobs. We look forward to discussing a future with Minute Media that does that,” said Emma Baccellieri, a staff writer for SI and vice chair for the SI Union, in a statement released by the NewsGuild.
Sports Illustrated Editor-in-Chief Steve Cannella emailed staffers Monday morning. “I know we all have a lot of questions — I wish I had more to share with you right now,” he wrote, adding, “I’m sure we will get a chance to meet with the Minute Media team as soon as possible.”
The licensing deal is for 10 years, with an option for an additional 20. It includes the rights to publish Sports Illustrated in print and online as well as Sports Illustrated Swimsuit and Sports Illustrated Kids. As part of the deal, Authentic will acquire an equity stake in Minute Media.
The New York Times first reported the agreement.

A New Chapter for Sports Illustrated, With Plans to Keep Print
Minute Media, owner of The Players’ Tribune, has struck a deal to operate Sports Illustrated for at least 10 years.
By Benjamin Mullin
The owner of Sports Illustrated said it had chosen a new company to publish the magazine, a deal that could settle some of the recent friction at the storied publication and continue the print edition.
Authentic Brands Group, which owns the intellectual property rights to Sports Illustrated as well as to celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Muhammad Ali, said it had struck a long-term deal to license Sports Illustrated’s publishing rights to Minute Media, a digital-media company focused on sports.
Minute Media’s license with Sports Illustrated will stretch for 10 years with an option to extend for up to 30 years total, into the magazine’s centenary. Both companies expect the deal, which also includes Sports Illustrated’s Swim brand, to last for the full 30-year term. The companies declined to disclose financial terms but said that Authentic Brands Group was taking a stake in Minute Media as part of the deal.
The deal is a significant expansion for Minute Media, a New York-based company founded in 2011 whose holdings — which include the sports websites The Players’ Tribune and Fansided — generate more than $400 million in revenue annually.
Sports Illustrated has been engulfed in turmoil for months, the result of a corporate tug of war between the company that owns the iconic magazine and the energy drink mogul whose executives have been running it. The agreement begins immediately and effectively wrests Sports Illustrated’s operations away from Arena Group, the digital-media company that has run the magazine since 2019 and threatened to end its print edition .
A spokesman for Arena Group said the company had been informed of the deal with the new licensee and had no other details.
It is a new chapter for Sports Illustrated, which published its first issue in 1954. Asaf Peled, the chief executive of Minute Media, said in an interview that he planned to continue Sports Illustrated’s print edition.
“In the current era of digital, it’s still not trivial and quite difficult to build your own brand and get people to know and admire it,” Mr. Peled said. “So once you get the opportunity to work with and grow an iconic brand like Sports Illustrated, you take it.”
Sports Illustrated has been in a state of limbo for months. In January, Authentic Brands Group terminated Arena Group’s license to operate the magazine after the company missed a $3.75 million licensing payment. That month, Arena Group — which continued to run Sports Illustrated while it was in breach of its licensing agreement — told Sports Illustrated employees that many would be laid off and notified others that they would remain on staff for 90 days. Last week, Arena Group executives told employees they would stop printing the magazine after its May issue.
Minute Media plans to expand the magazine’s publishing operations globally, Mr. Peled said, and to hire back some of the employees whom Arena Group had laid off. He added that he would not know how many employees would return until Minute Media started operating the business this week.
Mr. Peled said Minute Media was focused on “short-form sports content creation,” making video, audio and text for consumption on mobile devices. It owns Fansided, which features articles and podcasts for sports fans and for several years was owned by Sports Illustrated’s former publisher, Time Inc.; and The Players’ Tribune, which publishes videos and essays by athletes and was founded by Derek Jeter, the Yankees Hall of Fame shortstop. Mr. Peled said he also wanted to continue Sports Illustrated’s tradition of in-depth journalism.
“It’s an exception to our core strategy, but it’s not the first time we’ve done that,” Mr. Peled said.
An alert published with this article referred incompletely to a deal to operate Sports Illustrated. Minute Media agreed to run the publication for at least 10 years, with an option to extend for up to 30 years total; it did not commit to 30 years.
