Vibrant Curiosity, the 85m super yacht owned by German entrepreneur Reinhold Wurth, has been spotted in Auckland waters this weekend.

The vessel, which has a maximum speed of 18.5 knots, attracted attention yesterday at the entrance to Bon Accord Harbour at Kawau Island, where a helicopter was perched on the top deck.

A shipping tracking site shows the vessel is now at Port Fitzroy, Great Barrier Island after cruising there via Waiheke Island.

The Super Yacht Times reported Vibrant Curiosity was first spotted in Auckland waters at the end of last month.

Reported to cost $111 million, the luxury vessel sleeps 14 guests in seven cabins while boasting space for 26 crew members.

The master room features its own office and a private exterior deck complete with a spa.

There's a swimming pool and beach chairs on the main deck and a lift operates in the interior.

Built in 2009, the yacht gets its name from Wurth company's motto in the 2006/2007 business year.

Reinhold Wurth is the 141st wealthiest person in the World according to Forbes , with a net worth of US$11 billion. He entered his father's whole screw business, Wurth Company, at age 14.

After the death of his father, Wurth steered the company towards manufacturing automobile parts and has served as provider to Forumla One, Nascar, V8 Supercars, and DTM competitors.

Coping With The Financial Crisis German Entrepreneur Christens Yacht As Workers Take Pay Cuts

  • Zur Merkliste hinzufügen

Southern German businessman Reinhold Würth doesn't always pay the greatest attention to sensitivity. As of April 1, the billionaire screw dealer has ordered 1,250 of his 5,000 employees in Germany to reduce their working hours and cut their pay by 15 percent. The rest of his workers are being forced to take a solidarity pay cut of five percent. Just last week, Würth complained at a company meeting of his firm's declining turnover.

At the same time, though, the convicted tax evader also celebrated the christening of his new super yacht, the Vibrant Curiosity, which he ordered back in 2007. The 85-meter-long white ship, built at the Oceano dock near Rotterdam, cost around $100 million to build. It's equipped with two diesel engines from German motor company MTU, has a horsepower of 4,680 and can reach a speed of 18.5 knots.

The inside is equally spiffy -- with a large cabin for the owners, a VIP suite as well as luxury cabins for 14 further guests. At a time of economic crisis, pink slips and bad news, Würth knew he would find little public support for his new plaything. So when the entrepreneur invited guests to the vessel's recent launching party, he asked them to remain discreet about it.

An administrative court in the German city of Heilbronn fined Würth the equivalent of 700 days last May for irregularities in booking corporate costs. At the time of the investigation, Würth had threatened to move the company out of Germany.

The company says it is being forced to reduce working hours as a reaction to "the continuing difficult economic situation. The top aim of these measures is to preserve jobs and know-how at the company."

Reinhold Würth acquired his first painting in 1964. It was a work by the German Experssionist Emil Nolde, and it’s still in his collection. In fact, all of the 18,300 pieces he has purchased over the course of his life are still in his collection, which was the subject of a major museum show in 2016 at the the Gropius Bau museum in Berlin.

For many this would cause a storage problem, but not for Würth. His artwork is exhibited publicly in four museums throughout Germany and Switzerland and in the corporate office buildings of the Würth Group, a hardware company. (One of Würth’s museums sports an artistic display of the screws that made Würth Group famous.)

Perhaps one day Würth will run out of room. Though in June 2020, he opened an annex to his Museum Würth in the German city of Künzelsau. Designed by David Chipperfield Architects, the new extension adds 59,000 square feet, and cost around €39 million ($46 million). The space’s inaugural exhibition, “The Long View: Reinhold Würth and His Art Collection,” featured some 150 works from his extensive modern and contemporary art holdings.

In the meantime, as Würth told Bloomberg , “What’s in the collection, stays in the collection.” And what’s in the collection are significant artworks by artists including Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Georg Baselitz, Roy Lichtenstein, Gerhard Richter, Nolde, and Max Beckmann.

In 2010, Würth discovered that he owned not one but two forgeries resembling works by Heinrich Campendonk and Max Ernst. Both works were painted by the same forger, Wolfgang Beltracchi, who was later sentenced to six years in jail.

A painting of the Virgin Mary by Hans Holbein, widely considered one of the most valuable examples of German Renaissance art, was purchased by the billionaire businessman in a private sale in 2011. Though the exact winning bid was unknown, experts have pegged the price upwards of $60 million—then the highest amount ever paid outside an auction. More recently, he scooped up Max Beckmann’s 1942 Water Tower in Holland and Roy Lichtenstein’s 1994 Metallic Brushstroke Head .

“Vibrant Curiosity” is seen anchored in from of the Statue of Liberty.

A hardware billionaire known as the “Screw King” is screwing tourists out of an icon snap of the Statue of Liberty by parking his megayacht in front of Lady Liberty — and he’s the third rich guy to hog the free views with a luxury boat in two months.

“I’m so annoyed that it ruined my photo,” fumed Cora P., 25, who came all the way from Germany to snap the shot from the Staten Island Ferry on Tuesday, only to have it spoiled by a compatriot.

“It’s just your typical image of a rich person — doesn’t care about anyone else.”

The German tycoon Reinhold Würth’s 265-foot “Vibrant Curiosity” dropped anchor in front of the tourist hotspot on Monday — right where oil oligarch Eugene Shvidler also spent much of April and June soaking up the million-dollar vistas for free in his 370-foot vessel.

Shvidler sailed off into the sunset after The Post aired seafarers’ gripes about his view-blocking boat — only for Swiss-Italian scion Ernesto Bertarelli to move his 318-foot megayacht “Vava II” into the same spot in July, a ferry worker said.

“I don’t know why they’re allowed to park there,” said the worker, who wouldn’t give his name. “I’ve only seen Coast Guard, clippers and massive yachts that park there. Must be nice.”

The location is a legal anchorage, according to a Coast Guard spokesman — but local mariners still consider it a jerk move.

Not only are the barons robbing visitors of priceless views of the symbol of freedom, they’re saving thousands in berthing fees, said one waterway advocate.

“These guys should have the common sense and common courtesy to put boats where they’re not obstructing businesses taking thousands out the see the Statue of Liberty daily,” said Roland Lewis, president of the Waterfront Alliance.

But at least one tourist on Tuesday appreciated his Statue of Liberty snapshot with added “Vibrant Curiosity” — a boat that’s so large it fits on-board pool, elevator and helipad and room for 14 guests and 26 crew members.

“I thought the photo with the yacht was nice. You can see the proportion of the statue next to the boat” said Jose Luis, 44, a visitor from Spain

This isn’t the first time Würth and his massive yacht have made headlines — the 130th richest man in the world was roundly booed when he laid down $100M for the vessel right after cutting 1,250 Würth Group workers’ wages in 2009.

Sammlung Würth

  • Würth and the Arts

What Reinhold Würth has amassed during his soon 60-year-long passion for collecting ranges through about 500 years of art history – works from the late Middle Ages right up to the early years of the 21st century. Southern German Renaissance portraits can be discovered there – just like objects of courtly splendour and skilled workmanship, or a collection of charming, hand-painted posters advertising a traditional southern Italian puppet theatre (‘Opera dei Pupi’) and international Christmas nativity scenes or creative ensembles of works from Anselm Kiefer, Max Ernst, or also Christo und Jeanne-Claude.

Intensifying and consolidating his interest

It was with late Impressionist and Expressionist works that Reinhold Würth first discovered his penchant for collecting art. They were soon followed by examples of classic abstract art, in particular from the École de Paris, as well as figurative positions from the 1960s to 1970s. Exhibitions are a frequent source of inspiration for intensifying and consolidating his interest within the framework of the collection. So, in this way, artistic forms of expression from individual nations such as Austria, Mexico or Poland could come to the fore. Various exceptional artistic personalities such as Georg Baselitz, Fernando Botero, David Hockney or Alex Katz were also enthusiastically given space, just like sculptures of the first order impressively reflected in the work of Horst Antes, Hans Arp, Max Bill, Anthony Caro, Eduardo Chillida, Tony Cragg, Richard Deacon, Antony Gormley, Alfred Hrdlicka, Marc Quinn and many others.

A desire for expression, as well as depth and a certain strength

In this way, a collection has been created which sets both universal as well as individual standards and due to the long years of its creation also suggests a personally influenced purchasing strategy. It does not reflect a systematic approach based on flashes of recognition, but rather one registering movements through association, sensitively and curiously seeking out distant climes whereby it can sometimes definitely be a joyful contradiction in itself: “As long as I can recognise a desire for expression in individual works, as well as depth and a certain strength (….), I can just as easily get enthusiastic about a collage from Hans Arp arranged according to the ‘laws of chance’ as for a segment of a circle from Max Bill or one of Pablo Picasso’s late works.”

A very wide horizon

And so the collection has a very wide horizon, its wealth is irresistible, its complexity fascinating and the collecting mindset as part of it all is still very much one of getting on with the job. Its point of departure lies in its subjective interest, but at the same time, it is associated with the legitimate aspiration to a deep understanding of social responsibility.

A BUSINESSMAN AND HIS BUSINESS

Prof. Dr. h. c. mult. Reinhold Würth

Building up the multinational Würth Group is the life’s work of Prof. Dr. h. c. mult. Reinhold Würth, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Würth Group. The development of the Group is considered one of the success stories in German economic history. It all started in the summer of 1945 with Adolf Würth opening a screw wholesale business in Künzelsau, Baden-Württemberg.

From the very beginning

His son, Reinhold, was right by his side from the very beginning and helped his father wherever he could. Reinhold Würth officially joined the company on 1 October 1949 as the second employee and first apprentice. Very early on, his father sent him on sales trips: At the age of just fifteen, Reinhold Würth drove to Düsseldorf all by himself for the first time to secure new customers for the company. Today, he admits that at the time he “was a little afraid of having to knock on doors unknown.” However, he was successful and returned with new orders.

Reinhold Würth takes over the management

In 1954, Adolf Würth passed away suddenly at the age of 45. At that time, Reinhold Würth took over the management of the family business at only 19, with two employees and an annual sales volume of EUR 80,000. He exceeded his first target of maintaining the sales volume of the previous year. Acting with a far-sighted strategy and vision and the support of his mother Alma Würth, Reinhold Würth successfully continued the business and added one success to the next. In 1962, the first national company, Würth Netherlands, was founded, followed by companies in Switzerland, Austria, Italy, and other countries. In 1969, Reinhold Würth ventured over the Atlantic to North America. One year later, Würth expanded its activities to South Africa. With the establishment of the companies in Australia (1982), Japan, and Malaysia (both 1987), the small group of companies had extended its footprint across all continents.

By establishing and developing direct selling, an important foundation was laid for the company's success. More than 43,000 employees worldwide are in touch with their customers every day thanks to the many different sales channels. They know what their customers need and the company tailors its services to fit them: making the customers’ lives easier by developing innovative products. Lending a hand and finding new ideas and solutions that help customers in their day-to-day business are guiding principles at Würth. “Looking beyond the mountain and around the next corner” and leaving the well-trodden paths has always been one of Reinhold Würth’s basic rules for the company. His motto: “We are our customers’ employees.”

Based on these principles, Reinhold Würth has created a corporate culture that is based on optimism, dynamism, and appreciation of employees and their performance for their customers.

Giving something back to society

Apart from his responsibility for the staff and the company, his responsibility to society plays a central role for Reinhold Würth. To pool together different activities and actively promote this involvement, Reinhold Würth and his wife, Carmen Würth, established the Würth Foundation in 1987, which promotes and supports projects in the fields of art and culture, research and science, education and training, and integration. However, Würth’s commitment to society goes far beyond the work of the Würth Foundation. Starting in the winter semester of 1999/2000, Reinhold Würth was offered the Chair for Entrepreneurship at University of Karlsruhe (TH), where he shared with the students what is important when establishing and managing a company until 2003.

In recognition of his outstanding social and cultural commitment, as well as his entrepreneurial achievements, Reinhold Würth has received numerous awards:

He was awarded the German Founder’s Prize for his life’s work in 2004. He received the Great Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2005. In 2009, Reinhold Würth received the French medal “Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” in recognition of his extraordinary merits in the cultural cooperation between Germany and France and was appointed Commander of the French Légion d’Honneur in 2013. In 2012, Carmen and Reinhold Würth were awarded the James Simon Prize for their exemplary social and cultural commitment in Germany. Reinhold Würth was honored with the International Folkwang Prize in 2013. His good reputation is also reflected in the numerous honorary citizenships he was given over the years, including by the towns of Künzelsau and Schwäbisch Hall in Germany, Erstein in France and Palermo in Italy. Reinhold Würth is an honorary senator of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, University of Stuttgart, and Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen; he also holds numerous honorary doctorates, including from University of Palermo in Italy and University of Louisville in Kentucky in the USA.

A passion for art and culture

Reinhold Würth is a passionate art collector and a devoted champion of culture. This passion was ignited back in the 1970s. Half a century later, the Würth Collection contains about 20,000 works of art from over 500 years of art history, and it is still growing. In 2017, in the wake of inaugurating Carmen Würth Forum, Reinhold Würth prompted the foundation of Würth Philharmoniker, the new philharmonic orchestra in the region. Museum Würth 2 was opened in 2020 as an extension of Carmen Würth Forum, representing the company’s fifth art museum in Germany and 15th art gallery in Europe. Reinhold Würth’s top priority has always been to share his inspiration from art, music, and literature with his employees and with the public at large.

Aside from his successful business ventures, Würth is known for his passion for art. He began collecting works of art in the 1960s, and his collection now boasts over 18,300 pieces. His collection mainly focuses on art from the late 19th century.

Würth is a married man and has three children. He currently resides in Künzelsau, Germany.

Apart from his business assets, the value of Reinhold Wuerth’s wealth is calculated based on various factors, including insider transactions, taxes, and market performance. But one piece stands out from the rest – his massive art collection. This collection boasts over 15,000 pieces and is worth at least $500 million, according to an insider who asked not to be named due to its private value.

Reinhold Wuerth, a billionaire, resides with his wife Carmen, and they have three children together. In addition to their family, they share a passion for art, with a collection of over 15,000 works. In 2001, they opened the Kunsthalle Wuerth museum to showcase a portion of their collection to the public.

Born in 1935 to Alma and Adolf Wuerth, Reinhold Wuerth’s birthplace was Oehringen, Germany. In July 1945, his parents founded a business that sold screws in Kuenzelsau, Germany. Reinhold Wuerth decided to leave high school at 14 to work for the family business. After his father passed away five years later, Reinhold inherited the company.

Upon taking control of the company in 1954, it had only achieved $100,000 in sales. However, Reinhold Wuerth led the company toward global expansion, and by 1988, the company’s revenue had reached an impressive $1 billion. In 1994, he relinquished his role as CEO and instead assumed the position of chairman of the company’s supervisory board. Wuerth was later named honorary chairman, and in 2006, his daughter Bettina took over his previous board position.

Reinhold Würth’s Fortune

Reinhold Würth’s main source of wealth comes from the Wuerth Group, a private firm that produces screws and building materials. He retains control of the company’s stake through family trusts registered in his three children’s names.

The billionaire’s chairmanship of the supervisory board of Wuerth Group’s family trusts has been credited with his vast fortune. According to its website, the Wuerth Group, which has approximately 400 companies operating in 80 countries, reported total sales of €14.4 billion ($20.2 billion) in 2021.

The company determines its value by examining how similar publicly traded companies like Stanley Black & Decker, Forbo, and Masco are valued. As of June 22, 2022, it was found that the company’s worth had surged by approximately $2 billion.

Reinhold Würth also owns a superyacht named Vibrant Curiosity. It costs $150 million and is 85 meters long. The yacht was designed by an Italian company called Nuvolari Lenard, and it was built by a Dutch company named Oceanco in 2009.
