Rolex Predictions 2024: Yacht-Master II Redesign or Discontinuation?

Rolex Predictions 2024: Yacht-Master II Redesign or Discontinuation?

The Rolex Yacht-Master II is one of the most bewildering watches in The Crown’s catalog. From its niche functionality to its massive self-titled bezel inscription, the 44mm beast stands alone in both its mechanics and aesthetics. Its eccentricity is, at least in part, a product of its age; much like the Milgauss in 2023 , the Yacht-Master II is long overdue for an update or discontinuation. Since its 2007 release, the watch hasn’t seen any significant changes. Today I’d like to revisit the Yacht-Master II, discussing its quirks, potential for improvement, and likelihood for discontinuation.

What is the Yacht-Master II and Why Does it Exist?

Rolex Yacht-Master II

The Yacht-Master II features a “regatta chronograph” complication: a countdown timer set in one-minute increments up to ten. The timer’s intended use is to count down the minutes before the starting gun of a yacht race (also known as a regatta). However, the regatta chronograph can also count down the minutes before your next set at the gym, taking dinner out of the oven, or announcing to the room that you are, in fact, wearing a Yacht-Master II. The complication is set using a Ring Command Bezel: Rolex’s mechanically-integrated rotating bezel also seen on the Sky-Dweller . Without question, the Yacht-Master II is one of Rolex’s most complex watches, even today. Aside from its unique movement and functionality, the watch sets itself apart via its aesthetics.

There are no two ways around it – the Yacht-Master II is huge. At 44mm across, 14mm thick, and 50mm from lug tip to lug tip, this is the largest Rolex watch outside of the Deepsea collection. Within those dimensions, the Yacht-Master II exhibits a quirky layout like none other. The regatta chronograph’s readout is entirely redundant: numbers 1-10 are included on both the dial and bezel, taking up much of the watch’s visual real estate. Taking up even more of this real estate is the bezel’s large “YACHT-MASTER II” text: something I’m confident Rolex would never put on a watch today. With the exception of the platinum-bezeled white gold configuration (worn by Aaron B. of Bachelor Nation fame) , the Yacht-Master II is equipped with a bright blue ceramic bezel insert: a color that plays nicely with red accents atop a bright white dial.

How Can Rolex Improve The Yacht-Master II?

Rolex Yacht-Master II

The Yacht-Master II was released during an interesting time in horology. The late 2000s and early 2010s mark the era of the oversized watch thanks to brands like Panerai and Hublot. The Yacht-Master II is certainly emblematic of this time. It’s safe to say that, in the eyes of modern consumers (beyond just enthusiasts, in my opinion), the Yacht-Master II could most easily be improved by a size reduction. The watch’s current caliber 4161 is no larger in diameter than its base caliber 4130 (the outgoing Daytona movement): just 30mm. In other words, the Yacht-Master II’s large size is not a result of its complex mechanics, it’s a design choice. If we see an updated Yacht-Master II, I’m confident that we’ll see it in a smaller case (even if just slightly), with a movement based on the new caliber 4131.

Another potential improvement for the Yacht-Master II would be an Oysterflex bracelet. Given the Oysterflex’s popularity and adoption in similar product lines (Yacht-Master, Sky-Dweller) , I suspect that Rolex would implement it in a potential future Yacht-Master II.

Will Rolex Discontinue Or Update The Yacht-Master II?

In last year’s round of predictions, I wrote “As far as the Yacht-Master II goes, discontinuation feels just as likely as an update” . The year before that, Everest predicted that the Yacht-Master II would be discontinued. I highlight past years not to double down or solidify any one position; nobody knows what Rolex will or won’t do and I’ll be the first to admit that. I highlight these past predictions to show that, for years now, the longevity of the Yacht-Master II line has been in question. While the watch holds plenty of potential for a redesign (I mean, just imagine a 40-42mm Yacht-Master II on Oysterflex), it could very well be discontinued like last year’s Milgauss. As with all “predictions”, only time will tell what Rolex actually chooses to do.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II: Leaving the catalogue?

Some say it’s probably one of the coolest watches around, some say it’s one of the ugliest watches within the Rolex catalog: the Yacht-Master II . The Yacht-Master II has been in production since 2009 and is still in production in steel, two-tone gold or solid white gold. The steel version is the most affordable Yacht-Master II and will set you back around €15.000 for the 116680. The yellow gold or white gold version will cost you around €35.000, which is some serious money to be fair. On a personal note, I’m not a big fan of the Yacht-Master II since it’s too bulky and shiny, I’d prefer the Yacht-Master on the Oysterflex strap. Reason we’re naming the Yacht-Master II is the fact that rumor has it that Rolex will discontinue this model in 2024. Will there be a successor for the Yacht-Master II or is the fun over?

Discontinued Dial: No more Motifs?

One of the least popular models within the Rolex Datejust collection is probably the Palm-Dial, which is a dial with a palm motif. It’s available in 36mm and comes as a green version, a champagne palm dial or silver. Starting in 2021, Rolex introduced the palm dial on the 36mm Datejust for the first time. These palm dials can be found on the smooth and fluted bezel Datejusts, and can be found with Rolesor version, steel and white gold piece or the rose gold one. Prices of these watches vary from €12.000 up to €18.000 for the 126284RBR. Rumor has it that Rolex will discontinue the palm dial. What’s your thought on these dials?

New GMT-Master II watches: Coke and Sprite with a twist!?

When taking a look at the Rolex GMT-Master II models, there are some rumors going around town aswell. First and foremost, there is being speculated that the GMT Master 16710 ‘Coke’ is getting a re-edition. This would most likely be a 6-digit GMT master II ending with NRRO (Noir/Rouge). While the neo-vintage 16710 Coke sells for something around €14.000 in like-new condition, the list price for a new GMT-Master II Coke will be somewhere around €13.000.

rolex yacht master 2 discontinued

The GMT-Master II series has an other piece with some rumors surrounding the watch. This watch is the 126720VTNR , or better known as the Rolex ‘Sprite’ or ‘Lefty’. It is said that this piece wil also be seen with a bezel covered in diamonds. If we are going to see a GMT-Master II lefty covered in stones, it might be a 126720SANR with sapphires and black diamonds. List prices of these watches would probably be close to €80.000. The marketprice of similar pieces like the 126755SARU is upwards of €120.000! Can you believe that?

Rolex Expanding their Catalogue: New models to be added?

There are some rumors going around in the United States about some new models that Rolex will be launching this year. There are sources that tell us that Rolex has registered some new US-Trademark names. These names are the following: Rolex Land-Dweller, Rolex Coast-Dweller, Rolex Oystermatic. This makes it seem like Rolex is exploring the options with retiring the Yacht-Master II, but expanding their Sea-Dweller range. Is this going to be an even more sporty variant of the Sea-Dweller ? Only time will tell!

Rolex in 2024: The Salvation will be Watches & Wonders

The world of luxury watches is buzzing with anticipation and speculation as we delve into the rumors surrounding Rolex's plans for 2024. The possibility of the iconic Yacht-Master II being discontinued raises questions about its future, leaving enthusiasts to ponder if a successor will emerge. Meanwhile, the rumored discontinuation of the Palm-Dial in the Datejust collection adds an element of uncertainty for those who appreciate its distinctive motifs. On the flip side, exciting prospects emerge with potential re-editions of the GMT-Master II 'Coke' and 'Sprite' models, featuring unique twists that could captivate collectors. Additionally, the prospect of Rolex expanding their catalogue with names like Land-Dweller, Coast-Dweller, and Oystermatic sparks curiosity about what new adventures the brand may embark upon. As we eagerly await the official announcements that will probably come at the start of Watches & Wonders 2024, one thing is certain – Rolex continues to stir the horological world with its intriguing moves, leaving enthusiasts on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the brand's storied history.

SwissWatchExpo Ultimate Guide to the Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II

rolex yachtmaster and yachtmaster ii

The Rolex Yacht-Master collection pays homage to the brand’s connection to the world of sailing. Precision and dependability are vital for tools used in navigating open seas, and the Yacht-Master’s reliable, waterproof, and robust qualities make it the perfect timepiece for the sport.

While the original Rolex Yacht-Master is a stylish and ultra-luxe sport accessory for boating enthusiasts, the Yacht-Master II put together the best of Rolex technology to accurately time regatta races. Whether you’re lounging on a boat, or racing one, there is a Yacht-Master watch for you.

About the Rolex Yacht-Master Collection

The Rolex Yacht-Master is one of the brand’s youngest collections, having been introduced only 1992. And yet, it’s already one of their most diverse, with two distinct models under the family of watches, and dozens of permutations when it comes to dial designs, bezel styles, and bracelet options.

A look into its history shows that Rolex had plans for a yacht-themed watch decades before the Yacht-Master line was launched. Today, it’s a mainstay in the Rolex catalog.

Here are important milestones in the Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II history.

1958: Rolex entered a partnership with the prestigious New York Yacht Club, a social and boating club which sponsors an annual regatta.

1966: Rolex solidified its ties to the world of sailing when Francis Chichester – one of the world’s pioneering aviators and solo sailors – became the first person to sail around the globe while wearing a Rolex on his wrist. He sailed on his yacht, the Gipsy Moth IV, from August 1966 to May 1967, taking him 29,600 miles around the world.

1970s: Rolex never got around to creating a watch specifically for this category. The brand did make a prototype of the Cosmograph chronograph with the name “Yacht Master” on its dial, but they ultimately decided not to bring it to market.

1992: Rolex finally introduced the modern Yacht-Master – the brand’s first luxury sports watch built for the open seas. Whereas Rolex’s previous sports watches had utilitarian themes – the Submariner for diving, the Daytona for racing, and so on – the Yacht-Master was focused on aesthetics and luxury.

1994:  Rolex introduces midsize and ladies’ models of the Yacht-Master

1996: Rolex introduces two-tone (steel and gold) midsize and ladies’ models of the Yacht-Master

1997:  Rolex introduces the Rolesium version, which combines a steel body with a platinum bezel and dial. Until today the Rolesium is found exclusively in the Rolex Yacht-Master collection.

2007:  Rolex releases the Yacht-Master II, which is the world’s first watch equipped with a programmable countdown timer and a mechanical memory. The Yacht-Master II was unlike anything Rolex had launched before. Not only was it massive with its 44mm case, but it also had a bold, visually striking design that stood out among Rolex’s catalog of versatile timepieces.

2019:  Rolex introduces the Yacht-Master 42 to the collection. This is the first 42mm Yacht-Master model, offering a larger option for those who find 40mm too small. The first model came in 18k white gold, also a first for the collection, followed by an 18k gold version in 2022.

Key Features of the Rolex Yacht-Master

The Rolex Yacht-Master collection is composed of two families of watches: the original Yacht-Master, and the Yacht-Master II. While these two models have the same name, they are quite different from each other.

The Yacht-Master was introduced in 1992 as an ultra-luxurious sports watch for yachting and sailing enthusiasts. The nautical-inspired timepiece takes after the Rolex Submariner, but with greater emphasis on luxury materials and aesthetics.

The Yacht-Master II is a relatively new addition to the Rolex portfolio, introduced in 2007. Much larger that the Yacht-Master at 44mm, it is a purpose-built regatta watch equipped with a countdown timer for use in competitive sailing.

FEATURES OF THE ROLEX YACHTMASTER

Rolex yacht-master design.

Rolex Yacht-Master models come in an Oyster case with 100 meters of water resistance, a Triplock winding crown, and a bi-directional rotating bezel with raised 60-minute graduations and numerals. To make the watch easily readable, the dial features lume-filled round, baton, and triangular hour markers; luminous Mercedes-style hands, a date window at 3 o’clock, and a sapphire crystal with a Cyclops lens for easier reading of the date.

Since the introduction of the first all-gold Rolex Yacht-Master model in 1992, Rolex has expanded the line in terms of materials, aesthetic details, and mechanical upgrades. Here are the options available within the collection.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER SIZES

The Yacht-Master line is one of the most varied Rolex collections due mainly to the number of sizes made available. The smaller sizes, particularly the Lady Yacht-Master models, have been discontinued, but are still available in the pre-owned market.

35mm (discontinued)

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER MATERIALS

The solid 18k yellow gold and two-tone models of the Yacht-Master have been discontinued and replaced with the Everose and White Gold versions. The 37 and 40mm sizes come in Everose, Everose Rolesor, and Rolesium metals, while the 42mm comes exclusively in White Gold.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER BRACELETS

The Rolex Yacht-Master has only been equipped with the three-link Oyster bracelet and the Oysterflex bracelet, which combines rubber with an internal flexible metal blade. The Oysterflex can only be found on the solid 18k Everose and white gold models with matte ceramic bezels.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER MOVEMENTS

The Yacht-Master uses a time-and-date movement that changes depending on the size of the watch. Below are the movements used for each size.

FEATURES OF THE ROLEX YACHTMASTER II

Rolex yacht-master ii design.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II is one of the brand’s largest watches. Each model comes with a 44mm Oyster case that is water resistant to 100 meters, a Triplock winding crown, a Ring Command Bezel, two chronograph pushers, and an Oyster bracelet.

It is also one of Rolex’s most complicated watches, as it features a regatta chronograph with a countdown that can be programmed from 1 to 10 minutes, allowing yacht racers to accurately time the start of a race. Furthermore, its Ring Command Bezel is more than just a decorative element – it operates in conjunction with the movement and is actually how the user can set the programmable countdown.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II MATERIALS

All Rolex Yacht-Master II models come in the same 44mm case size. Models are available in the following metals:

Yellow Gold

White Gold and Platinum

The materials used for the bezel differ depending on the material of the case. Below are the available configurations.

Cerachrom Bezel – Yellow Gold, Everose Rolesor, Oystersteel

950 Platinum – White Gold

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II DIALS

The Yacht-Master II dial is unlike anything seen on other Rolex models because of its niche complication. It features a countdown display which can be programmed from 1 to 10 minutes, and read using the red-tipped arrow hand. Below the hour and minute hands at the center is a running seconds sub-dial. There’s also a red central chronograph hand, which can fly back or fly-forward to its starting position while in motion. It also features 12 square lume-filled hour markers.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II MOVEMENTS

The Yacht-Master II is equipped with two of Rolex’s most advanced movements to date, which feature a programmable countdown timer with mechanical memory, and chronograph synchronization.

Earlier models were powered by the 4160, and later models were upgraded to the 4161. The latter is based on the Daytona’s Caliber 4130, which features the same blue Parachrom hairspring for better switch resistance, and offer a 72-hour power reserve.

Popular Rolex Yacht-Master Models

The Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II are both excellent luxury watches that can suit any lifestyle. The Yacht-Master fits the mold of classic Rolex sports watches; while the Yacht-Master II has pushed the boundaries of what regatta watches can do. You can’t go wrong with the Rolex Yacht-Master, but here are some collector’s favorites:

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER with OYSTERFLEX BRACELET

In 2015, the Oysterflex, Rolex’s patented rubber bracelet, made its debut in the Yacht-Master collection. It’s appearance was also marked by several firsts: the first solid Everose gold Yacht-Master, paired with a matte dial and matte Cerachrom bezel.

The practical and edgy combination of solid gold and rubber continued with the release of the 18k white gold Yacht-Master 42 in 2019, and the 18k yellow gold version in 2022. This is a watch for someone who wants a luxurious watch that’s also ready for any adventure.

These models have the Calibre 3235 in place, which offers a 70-hour power reserve, and an upgraded Parachrom hairspring that has 10 times more precision than the traditional hairspring. The Calibre 3235 was also the first movement to receive Rolex’s certification as a Superlative Chronometer, and is regulated to a precision of an impressive -2/+2 seconds a day.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER RHODIUM DIAL

The stunning combination of Oystersteel and 950 platinum was made even more beautiful with the addition of a sunburst rhodium dial. This luxurious watch is part of the series of Yachtmasters introduced in 2016, which were upgraded with the Caliber 3235 movement mentioned previously. The slate dial is paired with turquoise details on the model signature and seconds hand, which gives just the right amount of color on the sleek monochromatic design.

ROLEX YACHT-MASTER II STEEL EVEROSE GOLD

The highly specialized Yacht-Master II was created as a professional regatta watch which can also be used as a chronograph. On the bezel, it has large 0-10 scale numbers and the Yacht-Master II name. On the dial is a smaller version of this countdown. Together, these allow the wearer to select a countdown interval of anywhere from one to ten minutes.

Aside from being one of the most complicated watches in the Rolex portfolio, the Yacht-Master II also stood out because of its unique look, owing to its 44mm case and bold colors. The steel and 18k Everose gold version is a crowd favorite due to its eye-catching combination of rose gold, blue, and red hues.

Common Questions About the Rolex Yacht-Master

Built for the sea, but stylish enough for any occasion, the Rolex Yacht-Master is one of the most desired sports watches in the brand’s catalog. Here are some of the most common questions asked about the Rolex Yacht-Master.

WHAT IS A ROLEX YACHT-MASTER?

The Rolex Yacht-Master is a collection of watches built for yachting and sailing. It is composed of two families of watches: the Yacht-Master, a luxury watch designed to be worn on while lounging on a boat; and the Yacht-Master II, a functional sports watch designed to accurately time the start of a regatta race.

WHY IS THE ROLEX YACHT-MASTER SO EXPENSIVE?

As a line of sport watches with special focus on aesthetics, the Rolex Yacht-Master collection evokes an unmistakable sense of luxury than can only be achieved by using the finest materials.

The Rolex Yacht-Master II in particular, is equipped with exclusive functions and features such as the programmable countdown with mechanical memory and the Ring Command Bezel.

The architecture, manufacturing, and innovative features of the Yacht-Master collection make it unique in the world of watches and therefore fetches a higher price tag.

Rolex Yacht-Master Mother of Pearl Dials

HOW WILL I KNOW IF MY ROLEX YACHT-MASTER IS GENUINE?

A genuine Rolex watch will be beautifully finished and decorated in keeping with the brand’s uncompromising quality standards. If you see any sign of imperfection on the watch, such as misaligned or misspelled text, unfinished surfaces, or wrong engravings and markings, it is likely a fake.

It is always advisable to do research beforehand so you can check if the details on your watch is in tune with the model’s features.

We also advise clients to only purchase a watch from a reputable and trusted dealer, who can provide a guarantee of authenticity on the watch.

IS THE ROLEX YACHT-MASTER WATERPROOF?

Rolex Yacht-Master watches are guaranteed water resistant to a depth of 100 meters of 330 feet. The collection was not made specifically for diving, but they come with screw-down crowns and case backs, which protect the movement from moisture and dust that can be encountered with sporting use.

The Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II serve as the embodiment of the brand’s relationship with the world of sailing. Explore our collection of Rolex Yacht-Master watches at SwissWatchExpo.com .

New Rolex Watches for 2023: Everything You Need to Know

Major releases and bold moves take the watch world by surprise.

rolex yacht master 2 discontinued

By Zen Love

If you thought Rolex was conservative, think again. With this year’s releases, unveiled at Watches & Wonders Geneva , the brand resoundingly rebuffed its reserved reputation. It introduced major new products that broke with the codes we’ve come to expect from the brand — thrusting into 2023 with new materials, movements and colorways. Catch up on the most important announcements below.

This story covers watches that Rolex either launched or discontinued in 2023. For a full breakdown of the all the Rolex watches still in production, read our other guide , updated for 2023.

watches

The Yacht-Master 42 is the titanium Rolex we were waiting for

rolex watch

The new Yacht-Master 42 is a big deal: it’s not the first serially produced Rolex watch in full titanium but it’s the first one meant for the masses — that is, that’s sized to be wearable as an everyday watch rather than affordable or necessarily easy to actually buy.

rolex yacht master titanium 42

Monochromatic like a Submariner and on a full titanium bracelet, it also makes the Yacht-Master collection feel more like the true, purpose-built sport watches for which Rolex is most loved. Now that the brand has broken the seal on titanium, other favorites could be in the pipeline, too.

The Perpetual 1908 is a completely new line (replacing the Cellini)

rolex watch

The Cellini is dead; long live the Cellini. Seemingly in its place is a new, much simpler collection called Perpetual 1908. That’s right, an entirely new Rolex collection — and yet, it’s clearly replacing the Cellini with a very similar case and bezel.

rolex yacht master titatnium 42

Its dial is simple with a seconds subdial at 9 o’clock recalling some the brand’s earliest models, and its movement is completely new — and visible through a display caseback, another departure for the brand. It has an observatory or Breguet-style hour hand, a 39mm case and only comes in precious metals with a couple different dial options. This is now easily Rolex’s dressiest watch.

The Daytona got redesigned details and a new movement

rolex watch

The Daytona is one of the most hyped watches in the world, and it turns 60 this year. Something special to mark the occasion was expected, and that turned out to be some subtle but substantive tweaks. The new generation has a completely new movement, the first time the brand has updated the Daytona’s movement since it went in-house in 2000.

rolex daytona 2023

At first glance, it looks the same as the outgoing generation, but on closer inspection you’ll see some differences. The case is still 40mm but has updated details, and the dial has a “new graphic balance.” Like the new 1908 watch, the platinum version features a display caseback. And, yes, there are also new steel versions with black and white dials.

The Explorer now also comes in a 40mm version

rolex watch

First it was 36mm, then it was 39mm, then it was 36mm again — and now it’s 40mm. The 36mm version introduced only two years ago isn’t going away, but the new watch is simply adding more options.

rolex explorer 40mm

Based on Rolex’s teaser video , we thought we might be getting an entirely new case design or might even come in titanium, but this really is the familiar Explorer in Oystersteel in a slightly bigger case. We’re okay with that.

The new GMT Master II introduces a completely new bezel color combo

rolex watch

The GMT Master II now comes with a new bezel combo of black and gray. This kind of thing might be Rolex’s big release in a typical year, but the brand has really gone all out for 2023.

rolex gmt master ii two tone

The new GMT Master II references only come in two-tone (“Rolesor,” or a steel-and-gold combo) and full yellow gold. Many GMT Master II watches get nicknames based on their bicolor bezels; for this one, we humbly suggest “Dark Knight.”

The Sky-Dweller got a movement upgrade

rolex watch

The Sky-Dweller got some new variants and a movement upgrade with the Calibre 9002 (featuring minor updates from the 9001). That’s it; nothing major for this line, but we do like the way it looks with a green dial in Rolesor Oystersteel and white gold, as shown above.

Wild Dials on Day-Dates and Oyster Perpetuals

rolex watch

Rolex often includes a few exotic dials in the mix of its releases. This time the brand got a bit artistic with some of very colorful executions in the Oyster Perpetual and Day-Date families with dials executed in lacquer. The colorful circles on the dial, which Rolex calls “bubbles,” can be found on versions of the Oyster Perpetual in 31mm, 36mm and 41mm models. The Day-Date got a similar treatment but with puzzle pieces instead of bubbles and goes a step further in playfulness incorporating emojis into the date display (like hearts) and positive words (“Happy,” “Eternity,” “Gratitude,” “Peace,” “Faith,” “Love” and “Hope”) instead of the day of the week.

Cellini, Yacht-Master II and Milgauss are discontinued

rolex milgauss watch

Rolex giveth and Rolex taketh away. You don’t need to shed a tear for these long neglected and somewhat overshadowed collections. They’re gone for now, but that just leaves room for the possibility that they’ll return in the future with the likes of new generations. Well, that seems like a possibility for the Milgauss, anyway; the Cellini seems to have its replacement in the 1908, as mentioned above. As for the Yacht-Master II… who knows? A watch being discontinued can even lead to a boost in interest for it, after all.

Testimonials

Nathaniel g..

"I had wanted a Yacht-Master for as long as I could remember, but could never justify the high price of buying new. Once I realized that buying pre-owned might be a smarter option, I searched around the internet, but only Bob's Watches made me feel comfortable with making such a large purchase online. I understood their business model, and past customers' reviews were very positive. The prices were competitive as well, and rivaled those of less-trustworthy dealers. Once I made my choice, there was a slight hiccup in the process to wire funds, but when I called in, the problem was quickly resolved.

I received my watch a few days later, and it looked stunning. When the site says "mint condition," it means it! Bob's was also able to tell me when the watch was last serviced, which (in combination with the one-year warranty) gives me peace-of-mind. As I look to expand my collection of watches, I'm sure I'll be a repeat customer of Bob's Watches."

"I have been shopping for the Rolex Yachtmaster for the better part of a year. I visited multiple jewelers & brokers in my area. Either they were of poor condition or over priced. Then I found Bobs Watches. The staff was expeditious and courteous. They sent me new photos of the watch upon request with no hesitation. The service, price, and condition of the watch was without compare. I am now a lifelong customer of Bobs Watches, I cannot imagine buying from any other source."

The Rolex watches that will be discontinued in 2024

Yes, you've read it correctly. this is a confirmed list of watches set to be discontinued from the rolex watch catalogue in april 2024. how do we know this well-kept secret we've been in touch with various authorised dealers from different brands and have collated consistent information across all of them. with a 99% degree of certainty, we can say that the following watches will be discontinued at the upcoming watches and wonders event., yacht-master ii.

Yacht Master II 2024

All watches from the Yacht Master II collection will be discontinued, encompassing all variations in steel, Rolesor, and full gold pieces. While this news may not surprise many Rolex collectors, it deals a significant blow to the Yacht Master line, which first debuted in 2007 . The decision to discontinue stems from the Yacht Master II’s sales performance falling short of its smaller siblings, the Yacht Master and GMT Master. While we might see some fluctuations in its price, its lack of popularity suggests limited potential for a resurgence.

Datejust Motif Dials:

Datejust 2024

Another notable discontinuation is the Rolex Datejust Motif dials, known for their rarity and difficulty to acquire. As of April 2024, all variations of the motif dials found on steel and Rolesor models in 36mm and 41mm sizes will cease production. Among the most sought-after were the green palm 36mm Datejust and the green & blue motif Datejust 41. Expect these watches to appreciate in value, potentially by around 10% over current secondary prices.

Oyster Perpetuals – Coloured Dials

Oyster perpetual 2024

A significant blow to new and upcoming Rolex collectors is the discontinuation of the Oyster Perpetual coloured dials introduced in 2020 . When these dials debuted, they enjoyed immense popularity, with most fetching a substantial premium, especially in the larger case sizes. With news of their discontinuation, these relatively affordable pieces are poised to skyrocket in value, with an estimated 30% increase over current premiums.

So what is coming up next from Rolex?

Given the prominence of these discontinued models, one can reasonably expect Rolex to introduce replacement models. Stay tuned for our next article – The New Rolex Model for 2024 – Name Revealed! for further insights.

Robb Report asked a cohort of Rolex lovers—a mix of pre-owned sellers, collectors, and auctioneers—to weigh in with more specific predictions. Based on the comments below, an updated Rolex GMT-Master II “Coke” reference (featuring a distinctive black and red bezel) may well be the brand’s big reveal. A new Submariner and precious metal variations of the Daytona would also be in line with expectations. A few people also made it clear that, hope against hope, the Crown would see fit to unveil a new Milgauss.

“Rolex are experts at keeping secrets,” says Ganjei, CEO and head curator of European Watch Company . “The truth is, nobody knows what Rolex is going to do, ever.”

Rolex 1908 Collection

My bet is that Grandpa Rolex will go back to what it knows best: introducing an improved version of an existing model on the Oyster line. The surprise might occur with the new 1908 collection—I would not be surprised if they added some references there and expanded the line.

Finally, the use of titanium in the Oyster Professional collection will be something that many observers will be looking for (but Rolex is known to be rather slow when it comes to evolving and expanding that line).

Eugene Tutunikov, CEO of SwissWatchExpo

In 2024, the anticipation surrounding Rolex releases is high, with expectations for a blend of predictability and innovation. Building upon the previous year’s trend of emoji-themed watches, 2024 could witness a shift towards revitalizing Rolex’s timeless classics with innovative materials and vibrant color schemes. This could entail introducing new hues to traditional models or experimenting with novel materials to enhance durability and aesthetic appeal.

One of the most significant events in the Rolex timeline is the 70th anniversary of the GMT-Master, which debuted in 1954. This milestone is likely to be commemorated with special releases and editions that pay homage to the iconic timepiece. Given Rolex’s penchant for exclusivity and luxury, enthusiasts can expect to see exciting variations of the GMT-Master, possibly incorporating precious metals like gold or platinum.

Rolex

A new iteration of the GMT-Master II is anticipated, possibly featuring a revived version of the beloved red/black “Coke” bezel. This iconic design element may receive a modern twist, such as being crafted in a precious metal that hasn’t been utilized before, adding a fresh dimension to the classic aesthetic.

I also foresee a new watch to commemorate the Rolex Submariner that was first unveiled at Baselworld in 1954. Again, a variation of precious metals might be added to the mix such as platinum. I’m also hoping for an element of surprise—perhaps a hint of red text adorning the dial, which hasn’t been seen since the ’70s.

Henry Flores, founder of the Classic Watch Club in New York City

Maybe Rolex will release a “Coke” GMT with a black and red bezel and discontinue the “Pepsi.” I’ve heard anecdotally through some authorized dealers that they’ve hardly seen any Pepsi GMTs come through their doors last year or the first quarter of this year.

Paul Altieri, founder and CEO of Bob’s Watches

We could see an updated Rolex GMT-Master II “Coke” reference 126710BLRO [a “Pepsi” version of the model is pictured below] at Watches & Wonders. The current-gen model with the black and red “Coca-Cola” bezel has been around since 2018, putting it near the typical six- to seven-year Rolex product cycle for refreshes.

Rolex

Don’t expect any dramatic aesthetic departures from the beloved bi-color bezel look. But Rolex may update the movement with a new caliber offering extended power reserve or other technical enhancements. An increased case size from 40 mm to better align with modern 41 mm models like the Submariner is also possible, though I doubt they’d stray too far from the classic Coke formula.

As a pillar of Rolex’s lineup, you can count on refinements versus any radical overhaul of this icon. But a new Coke variant would definitely generate buzz as a highlight release. The GMT collection is hugely important, so Rolex will be careful while aiming to improve the product. An updated Coke would be a major unveiling.

Giovanni Prigigallo, co-founder of EveryWatch

I do not anticipate Rolex making a habit of releasing unconventional watches like the Emoji Day-Date or the Celebrations dial on the Oyster Perpetual. As usual, Rolex aims to maintain an element of unpredictability in their releases, so offering similar pieces would be out of character for the brand.

Rolex

Instead, I expect Rolex to shift its attention back to its timeless classics. I wouldn’t be surprised to see an evolution in the Submariner, as it has been a while since its last update. Likewise, the GMT line may see some exciting innovations. There have been longstanding rumors about the challenges in producing the Pepsi Bezel, so it wouldn’t be unexpected if Rolex decides to discontinue this model and introduce something fresh in its place.

Eddie Goziker, president of Wrist Aficionado

Firstly, I believe Rolex will finally bring back the highly anticipated GMT-Master II “Coke” with its iconic black and red bezel. Fans have been clamoring for its return, and Rolex seems ready to deliver, especially considering the rumored patent they filed for the black/red ceramic bezel.

Moreover, we may see the discontinuation of the left-handed GMT-Master II “Sprite,” as Rolex is known for its conservative approach and likely won’t keep a funky left-handed watch in their catalogue for long. Or, maybe, they’ll flip it back to a regular right-handed watch.

Rolex

Moving on to the Daytona, I foresee the new model to herald the return of the meteorite dial, reminiscent of the very popular meteorite dial that was recently discontinued. Additionally, Rolex may introduce gold Daytona models with colorful dials, which would be a refreshing change from the current monochromatic designs. Colorful Daytonas have been popular so it makes sense Rolex will bring them back to push precious metal Daytona sales.

For the Submariner and Sea-Dweller collections, we are hoping Rolex finally introduces steel models with the Oysterflex bracelet, fulfilling the wishes of sports enthusiasts seeking a rubber-clad waterproof option. Another possibility is a rose gold Submariner with a green dial, perhaps in the popular olive shade. Alternatively, we would love to see a white gold “Hulk” variant, a “Hulk 2.0” if you will.

Joshua Ganjei, CEO and head curator of European Watch Company

With the reintroduced Pepsi already out for a number of years, it seems logical for a “Coke,” or black and red, bezel GMT. Both vintage references are highly popular.

Rolex Daytona Ref. 126529LN

Geoff Hess, Sotheby’s head of watches for the Americas and founder of RollieFest

I predict Rolex this year will remain loyal to its unparalleled track record of consistency and will focus on making only incremental and slight changes to current models. I think we’ll see their tried-and-true formulas in full force, with only modest modifications to existing designs to make the product minimally better.

When it comes to innovation we typically think of large, dramatic alterations, but far more than in recent years, I believe the Rolex product this season will remain largely the same, and consistently great, but with only slight enhancements to the current lineup.

Like no other brand, Rolex has found a way to make mass-produced luxury timepieces appear truly rare, and in turn, they become instantly coveted. New product is typically somewhat predictable for them, and always consistent. Accordingly, the brand is protected from market mistakes. In this exciting time of year for our hobby, Rolex will present an evolution, not a revolution.
