Marine Upholstery Fabric

Marine Upholstery Fabric

When picking out fabric for your boat, there are a few things to consider.   Let us try to help you.

#1.   Cockpit or Cabin:      In short, will this fabric be rained on or will it just be in a high humidity environment.   Because all boats live on water (or should) its important that you avoid ANYTHING made with cotton.      If the project is in the cockpit we suggest either Marine vinyl or Awning weight sunbrella.   These are the two options for the most waterproof paths that will keep your foam from being soaked all season long.     You have more flexibility in what you select if the project is in your cabin.   The material needed for seats and upholstering within the cabin can be polyester or acrylic.  (LINK)

#2.  Fabric or Vinyl.     Marine Vinyls come in a ton of options.    We offer Seaquest and Spradling brands.        Spradling is well known for the term "soft side" because their products have a little stretch built into them.  Our Spradling Marine vinyls only come as the standard flat 54 inch wide vinyl.    Conversely the Seaquest products come with pre made welt, hidem, machine pleated vinyl and the standard flat vinyl.

Sometimes we find that sailboats tend to be more fabric-based and motor yachts use more vnyl products.    When covering your boat for a mooring cover, sunbrella fabric is the best choice.

Marine Upholstery Fabrics . Perfect Fit stocks vinyls, shade and boat topping materials, and cushion underlining that we recommend for marine use. Our marine vinyls are treated to be water , mildew , and UV resistant to last as long as possible in marine environments, as are our boat topping materials . The cushion underlining we have on offer is anti-skid and therefore ideal for keeping cushions on your boat in place through the natural motions of the sea while ventilating your cushions to inhibit mold and mildew development. Our boat topping materials are perfect for shade applications to keep your days on the water cool and comfortable.

12 AFFORDABLE BOAT INTERIOR DESIGN IDEAS

When we first moved aboard, our sailboat interior was a mess and we didn’t have the money to update it . We wanted to go cruising and our priorities were things like new sails, rigging, fiberglass repair, and electronics.

As much as I wanted a beautiful boat interior it was impossible to justify hiring an interior designer or updating the upholstery when we didn’t even have a dependable bilge pump! Fortunately, I found some creative boat interior design ideas and was able to makeover our sailboat for next to nothing.

In addition to sharing our boat interior restoration ideas, I’ve included my favorite boat interior photos from Pinterest and Instagram to further stoke your inspiration!

A quick note that this post contains affiliate links (so if you purchase through a link we’ll earn a small commission). The opinions are our own.

1. START BY DEEP CLEANING

As un-fun as it might be, a deep clean is the cheapest way to radically brighten your interior. It’s especially affordable if you use homemade boat cleaners. Dirty boat upholstery, mildewed cabin liners, and salt-encrusted hatches made our boat feel damp, dark, and generally unpleasant.

Deep cleaning (after years of neglect) drastically improved the boat cabin’s appearance and gave me a better idea of where to focus our boat interior makeover.

  • Professionally launder your upholstery
  • Wipe down the cabin liners with vinegar to prevent mildew and mold
  • Wash hatches to maximize natural light
  • Clean under all the cabin soles and the edges of any rotting boards
  • Wash the walls and treat any wood with the appropriate wax, oil, or varnish
  • Scrub out the bilge to prevent that boaty smell.

2. INSTALL INTERIOR BOAT LIGHTS

One of the great challenges of sailboat interior design is lighting. I’ve always felt that living on our sailboat is like living in a basement apartment because it is totally lacking in natural light !

One of the quickest ways to brighten things up is to install marine LED lights. The key to making LED boat lights look great, is placement.

sailboat interior material

The 3 best places to places to put LED strip lights on a sailboat

1. Under counter lighting. They look especially nice under cupboards or overhangs because the light strip is hidden.

View this post on Instagram < New battery installed! Lights and radio work. There’s LED strip lights which are great, but in the future we may need to swap those out for the multi colored ones. Our house has party-mode, the boat should too! #catalina22 #sailing #boatlife A post shared by SV Buza Sasha (@sv_buza_sasha) on Jul 11, 2018 at 5:18am PDT

2. LED rope lights make great courtesy lights . Tuck strip lighting on either side of a walkway to help guests navigate in the dark.

Battery operated fairy lights look cute coiled in a jar of seashells and are another easy way to add decorative lighting because no wiring is required. For the same reason, Solar Luci lamps and Solar Luci strings are a great option for lighting the cockpit.

3. COZY-UP TO NEW BEDDING

Ditch those damp cotton sheets and invest in hydrophobic options like 100% polyester. If you have a vberth, quarter berth, or non-standard sized bed, you may want to spend a few extra bucks on custom fitted boat sheets.

I know many cruisers who swear by memory foam mattresses and the Hypervent mattress pad for preventing condensation. If you like duvets and comforters, consider a mulberry silk option because it’s mold and mildew resistant.

4. FRESHEN THE HEAD

Add a splash of color to a dark bathroom with cheerful microfiber towels , Or, if you don’t want to feel like you’re camping, try the more luxurious quick-drying Turkish towels .

Tie them in with a cute wall-mounted soap dispenser and a spill-proof whicking air freshener and you’re on your way

5. GO GALLEY GOURMET

  • Replace a rusted or dull faucet with a sparkling new one with a pull-down sprayer.
  • Splash-out with colorful dish towels
  • Use biodegradable loofas and scrubbies instead of plastic
  • Pick up non-breakable dishware and glassware in fun patterns and designs.
  • Create extra space with chopping board stove and sink covers
  • Add custom knife, wine, and spice racks
  • Add a green bar to keep greens fresh without a fridge

6. BOAT INTERIOR UPHOLSTERY IDEAS

Reupholstering a boat is the single most expensive part of a sailboat interior refit but it makes a huge difference. It costs thousands of dollars if you hire someone to do it. Fortunately there are a few tricks we used to avoid a full upholstery overhaul.

  • Fun throw cushions and blankets can give your interior new life (and cover stained or threadbare upholstery)
  • Packed out seat cushions can be easily fixed by inserting a layer of high-density foam and batting on top of the existing foam.
  • If your upholstery is in really bad shape you may want to sew elasticated cushion coverlets that go over the top side of the cushion (it’s also a good way to protect nice new upholstery from boat projects (see: dirt, grease, and sweat stains).
  • You can reupholster your boat for a fraction of the cost if you do the sewing yourself. It’s possible to score good deals on durable materials and marine-grade fabrics online. Also, if you’re not a sewer but you’re going cruising, you may want to bring your boat interior fabric with you and have the cushions sewn up in a place like Mexico or Fiji. We eventually had all of our saloon cushions sewn up for $100 USD in Ensenada, Mexico.

If you choose to reupholster your boat, look for boat interior upholstery fabric . You don’t have to worry (as much) about finding a waterproof or UV-resistant fabric (because it will be inside). However, always choose a synthetic fabric , heavy-duty nylon thread, and plastic zippers. Cotton will eventually rot and metal zippers will rust. You can get away with not using marine upholstery but natural fibers are a big no-no!

7. CUT A RUG

8. LOVE YOUR WALLS

Securely fasten art, photos, and souvenirs to your walls. Mirrors are great for creating the illusion of space.

Privacy curtains are also a good way to add a splash of color and are straightforward to make

View this post on Instagram After all of the sanding, refinishing, painting, ripping out old floors and carpet, we’re really loving our space. There are more projects to do, but we’re enjoying the results so far! When we originally bought our boat back in December, we had enough time to take care of the “must do’s” so this summer we are spending the time to really make her ours! . . . . . . #lightandbright #sailboat #sailboatinteriors #woodwork #overhaul #huntersailboats #cherubini #interiordesign #laboroflove #tinyliving #liveaboard #boatlife #sailors #ourhome #takingabreak #fornow #summerprojects #traveler #travelblog #results #saltytails @sv_saltytails A post shared by Erin 🌊🌴⛵🐚👙☉ (@erin_svsaltytails) on Jul 22, 2018 at 11:27am PDT

9. WHITEN AND BRIGHTEN YOUR SAILBOAT INTERIOR

Painting panels in light colors can brighten and modernize a boat cabin and set off teak trim. We repainted our red and blue fiberglass bathroom white and it made the space feel much bigger. It also makes it easy to clean because you can see the dirt.

10. STOW SIMPLY WITH CUTE STORAGE SOLUTIONS

Boats are always short on storage space but a few decorative baskets and storage containers can really improve the look of the space while giving you more room to tuck things away.

11. FUN AND FUNCTIONAL WINDOW COVERINGS

12. CHOOSE A FUN FEATURE

Let your imagination run wild. A feature wall, table, or piece of artwork can really change the feel of a sailboat interior. Have fun with colors, patterns, and make your new floating home your own.

Wallcoverings for vessel interiors

sailboat interior material

By Terri Madden and Alayna Wool

Wall panels and headliners make a statement when entering the saloon of a yacht. Much like the color or texture of the walls of your home, wall panels and headliners are items that cannot be overlooked—especially when they start to sag and age. Fresh wall panels truly enhance the overall appearance of any interior, quickly giving a vessel’s cabin an updated look.

Wall panels offer a visual focal point as well as acoustic tranquility to cabin interiors. The latest vertical and horizontal offerings from a variety of manufacturers are often showcased at international boat shows throughout the year.

Material considerations

A pliable vinyl upholstery fabric with the look and feel of real leather is always a good choice for a headliner or wall panel. An important consideration is whether the final product will include a foam backing. Foam-backed vinyls are easy to clean but will have seams that require covering. We generally use foam-backed materials as headliners or other applications where the material is wrapped around the panel edges and the panels align next to one another.

Be sure to review manufacturer specifications for strength, abrasion resistance, cleaning and maintenance. Quality materials feature topcoat finishes that protect against bacteria and fungus, which is extremely important for marine applications. Manufacturers also offer materials in a multitude of colors and textures to complement boat interiors for a unified look throughout the cabins.

Headliner materials

Headliner fabrics come in a variety of options, including comfortable carpet-type fabrics and the foam-backed vinyls mentioned above.

A “HullBlanket” headliner fabric is a durable, stain-resistant carpet-type material that offers antistatic and moisture-proof properties. This economical material hides irregular hull imperfections and works especially well for vessels under 30 feet.

Vinyl headliners feature a marine vinyl front with or without a foam backing. Most foam-backed vinyls consist of a 3/16-inch foam adhered to the vinyl face. The foam adds a bit of cushion and helps conceal small imperfections in the hull. It can also be cut away to accommodate protrusions like nuts and bolt heads. Manufacturers now offer foam-backed headliner and perforated headliners in many textures and styles. These vinyl headliners create a smooth appearance and are easily wiped clean. Keep in mind that the edges of foam-backed vinyl should be covered, as they will leave a visible foam edge. Because of this, foam-backed vinyl is a great choice for applications where the seams will be hidden under trim pieces or where the material is wrapped around panel edges.

Installation tools and techniques

Do not underestimate the time and effort needed to prep areas for new surface materials. Be sure to remove all original plywood or any other material prior to installing new materials.

Beyond a general spray adhesive, such as 3M ™ General Trim Adhesive, only a few other materials are needed for installing a headliner or wall panels. Marine vinyl without a foam backing can also be used as a hull liner. Apply the spray adhesive to securely adhere the material to the hull, being careful to avoid bubbling or gaps. This is a one-shot process, so you need to get it right the first time. Like foam-backed vinyl, these products are easy to clean but will also have seams that may require covering. We recommend planning the material layout ahead of time on paper to avoid or limit any seams.

Tools that are lightweight and ergonomically designed with textured, nonslip surfaces make installation easier. Consider tools that include a 45-degree angle to allow for access to tight spaces at close angles. Straightedge tools work well on straight edges for short distances, and a 9-inch “pizza cutter” works well for long runs along either the perimeter or a mid-wall track.

SIDEBAR: Walls on the water

By Sigrid Tornquist

While textile wallcoverings are gaining momentum in the residential and commercial markets, wallcoverings for marine applications remain vinyl-based. Mildew-resistance, water resistance and cleanability are, of course, paramount. “What changes with wallcoverings for marine applications are the patterns,” says Dave Estiri, co-owner of Sea Furniture, Santa Ana, Calif. (www.seafurniture.com). “We’re seeing more bright colors and geometrics right now.”

Marine wallcovering substrates are typically wood, drywall and fiberglass. For a refit or redesign, the old wallpaper should be removed; walls should be scraped and sanded; and then washed and disinfected in preparation for the wallpaper, Estiri says.

Which primer to use depends on the substrate, according to Spencer Colgan, Tampa Bay Wallpaper Installer, Tampa, Fla. (www.tampabaywallpaperinstaller.com). “Fiberglass would need a different primer that would be more aggressive,” he says.

Vinyl with foam backing used over wall panels is an option, with a typical thickness ranging from 1/16 inch to 3/4 inch. “This is something you see more in older designs rather than in brand-new ones,” Estiri says. “The thing to note with this application is that after the surface is cleaned and conditioned, the foam with the vinyl needs to be backed with mesh so that everything stays together.”

As with any installation, the foundation of success is using well-made materials and stellar techniques. “You need to know what you’re doing and do it right,” Estiri says. “Make sure everything looks as good in five to 10 years as it does the first day.”

Our review is based on information obtained from fans and boat lovers. Through their testimonials and ratings, we were able to come up with the following list of the top boat upholstery.

Bry-Tech Marine 1 White Upholstery Fabric

bry

This particular model is produced by Bry-Tech Distributors which is among the trusted brands when it comes to the supply of marine upholstery. It’s a vinyl material capable of handling all harsh elements in aquatic environments. Apart from withstanding extreme sunlight and moisture, Marine 1 is specifically designed for water-based platforms.

The coated surface repels water making it best for outdoor water use. You can install this heavy-duty material easily by sewing or stapling. It comes with a 1.10 mm thickness and a weight of about 20 ounces per yard. It may be why it has been a favorite when it comes to upholstering boat seats as well as beach house furniture and beach ATVs.

One of the main benefits of this product is its wide range of colors. In case you want to upgrade from a solid color, you can do so by choosing fabrics with carbon fiber or diamond textures. These usually measure 3 x 3 inches. If you are a bit hesitant, you can match them with your upholstery and feel the texture.

If you like the sample, you can get Bry-Tech Marine 1 by the yard, which is 54 inches and 36 inches long. Keep in mind longer yards come in one continuous piece. It means you don’t need to worry about making flawless installations.

One setback of this product is its strong adhesive-like smell. It’s common among vinyl fabrics. What you need to do is to air it out a little before you start working with it. All in all, this is an excellent product because it can tolerate extreme sea pressure and temperature.

  • Moisture, sun, and water-resistant
  • It features thick and sturdy material
  • Easy to install
  • Best for indoor and outdoor upholstery
  • Wide range of colors
  • Strong glue-like smell

Marine Vinyl Fabric

Marine Vinyl Fabric

Do you have a passion for marine conservation? If so, this is your ideal choice. The brand is environmentally conscious. Additionally, it’s dedicated to ensure you are protected against scratches, water, mold, and sun exposure.

This fabric is considered a “heavyweight” option. It weighs 28 ounces per linear yard with a thickness of 0.95 mm. The rear part is made of woven polyester fiber while the front is PVC. As a result, a soft finish is created by the fabric while keeping your seats protected with its coating.

There is no need to worry about tear when using this material. The reason is the polyester backing allows it to be shaped firmly around the majority of surfaces. With Marine Vinyl fabric, you are assured of comfort, flexibility, and durability.

One of the reasons why most people love this product is because it’s a family-owned business run by people who love the outdoors. They know what customers want, and as a result, they produce quality products at affordable prices.

There are very few boat upholstery brands that allow a portion of their sales for charities on marine conservation. If you didn’t know, Marine Vinyl is one of them. As an ocean lover, this gives a sense of fulfillment bearing in mind that your purchase contributed to the marine conservancy.

A yard of this product has a width of 54 inches and a length of 36 inches. You can buy 10 yards or longer in one continuous roll. In case you want shorter fabrics, you can get them folded and shipped in a box. Keep in mind this option faces challenges related to removing creases.

To get rid of them, you can use a hairdryer to smoothen out the wrinkles. Alternatively, you can let the fabric sit out in the sun. Within no time, it will reveal that smooth finish you were looking for. That said, Marine Vinyl upholstery fabric is worth your money considering that it’s a customer-friendly brand with admirable advocacy for marine life.

  • Resistant to abrasions, mildew, UV rays, and water
  • Durable fabric
  • It features a soft faux leather texture
  • Environment-friendly
  • Flexible and durable
  • Requires removal of creases

VViVid White Marine Vinyl Fabric

VViVid White Marine Vinyl Fabric

Are you looking for a boat upholstery with a long-lasting freshness even when exposed to dirt and water? If this is the case, your best bet is VViVid Marine Vinyl fabric. It has a simple but clean look. It’s produced by one of the biggest suppliers of vinyl and raw materials in the automotive industry.

The top layer, designed to brave sea conditions, is made from PVC vinyl. This enables the fabric to have a high resistance to scratches, sunlight, and water. To ensure extensive protection throughout the upholstery, its polyester mesh backing can tightly hug the surfaces it covers.

Although VViVid claims to be a heavy-duty material, it feels much lighter than advertised. However, you should not have any problem with that because the material does an excellent job. The solid white color is undoubtedly the best for a pristine boat interior fabric look.

Fortunately, any unpleasant filth can be removed with just a wipe. Compared to thicker materials, this option tends to tear faster. However, its suave texture will leave you speechless. If you want to see how the fabric reacts to tension, try to stretch it out in one direction.

It’s a great option for boat pillows and cushions.

  • Lightweight material
  • Works perfectly with soft surfaces
  • Easy to clean
  • Best for the interior
  • Easy to tear

Plastex Black Marine Vinyl Fabric

plastex

Interior design for watercraft may prove to be an overwhelming challenge. You need to be vigilant when choosing a fabric with ample protection. The process involves a lot of color mixing and matching. Creating a modern boat interior with the Plastex Black Marine Vinyl fabric allows you to keep it simple but elegant.

Most fabric gurus state that you can’t go wrong with black. Therefore, this fabric is best for boaters who struggle with colors. Additionally, it has a faux leather texture making it a sophisticated boat seat material.

Apart from this option offering you substantial protection, it also makes your cabin seem polished. It has a polyester backing with a PVC face, just like the other materials. As a result, the fabric stretches all over your boat seats perfectly.

Compared to the other fabrics, this heavy-duty product is among the best considering it’s lighter. It comes with a weight of about 13 ounces, and a thickness of 1.1 mm. The fact that it’s somehow thick but soft makes it a good fabric for indoor seat covers.

One drawback with the design is that it’s not completely waterproof. However, we recommend the soft material if you plan to just lounge around and watch the water from the confines of your cabin . For a quick and easy pick, look no further! Plastex Black Marine Vinyl fabric is one of the best options in the market.

  • Best for indoor seat covers
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to work with
  • The black faux leather finish creates a sleek atmosphere
  • Prevents dirt and unwanted stains
  • Not completely waterproof

Payless Marine Vinyl Outdoor Upholstery Fabric

Payless

This design features a collection of different colors. They vary from basic shades such as navy blue, dark green, black, to other unique colors like lime green, burgundy, turquoise, among many others.

Like the previous products, it’s also made of vinyl which promises long-lasting use in marine environments. You can use this fabric confidently for years to come without having to worry about mold or mildew. To increase durability, the fabric has a light pebble grain with a white knit backing.

The product can be used for various applications. You can use it to make fantastic ottomans, auto interior, or seat cushions. Despite the product handling being exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods, it can also withstand the UV rays. Therefore, it’s ideal for outdoor furniture such as your boat seats.

Looking at the dimension, a yard of this brand has a width of 54 inches. However, we recommend the swatch piece in case you want to test the sample first. With that, you can check and confirm if the quality and color match your boat’s interior well.

Stains can easily be wiped with warm water and mild soap when they get onto the sheet. So, don’t be stressed out when ice cream falls on your fabric-covered boat seat. Some customers prefer a more lightweight version than the current one, though.

  • Best for both indoor and outdoor
  • It features a variety of colors
  • Protects against mold and mildew
  • Long-lasting Vinyl material
  • It can withstand the adverse effects of UV rays
  • Some customers state they would prefer if it was lighter

Bry-Tech Upholstery1 Black Vinyl Fabric

Bry-Tech Upholstery1 Black Vinyl Fabric

Do you want a fabric that can achieve a monochrome theme? Bry-Tech Upholstery1 Black Vinyl Fabric comes with a delicate and smooth texture making it look and feel expensive. The combination of a polyester underside and a PVC top elevates this boat seat cover to a premium commercial grade.

Apart from black, the product is also available in various colors. To break the monotonous look, you can add a hint of color to your black theme. All in all, black will always be a timeless color that exhibits luxury.

The good thing with this fabric is you don’t need to hire someone from an upholstery shop to install it on your seats. It doesn’t matter how tough it is, working with it is trouble-free. With about 5 yards, you’ll be amazed at the changes you will see. It will have no difference from that of a professional.

The only difference between this fabric and the other Bry-Tech counterparts is it’s less resistant to water and direct sunlight. On the upside, it makes your boat furniture comfier and secure. In short, if you are a boater looking for style, durability, and comfort in your boat interior, consider this product as a viable option.

  • Best for boat cabin upholstery
  • DIY easy installation
  • It features an expensive-looking leather texture
  • Offers both comfort and durability
  • Available in different colors
  • Less resistant to water and sunlight

AquaGuard Teal Marine Vinyl Fabric

aqua

AquaGuard Teal Marine Vinyl Fabric is an amazing choice if you are more into light colors. It’s a pop of life that matches the sunny weather at sea. Aside from teal, the product also comes in other dainty shades such as ivory, turquoise, sky blue, and mint.

As light as it may seem, the fabric is tough when it comes to boat seats. Despite weighing 34 ounces, it only has a thickness of 0.95 mm. Note that it is a certified marine-grade product. The fact that it resembles most upholstery fabrics means you can use the product to accessorize not only boat seats but also furniture, shoes, and bags.

What makes it different from other regular vinyl fabrics is the solid protection from water and cuts. Blending polyester materials with PVC allows the waterproof front side to shield the upholstery from heat and abrasions. To prevent the fabric from tearing up, the woven backing provides elasticity.

You may find it bulky to sew meaning you may need to use a thicker needle to get through. However, this fabric is flexible enough with an excellent pull that reaches any curved sides. Its strength guarantees that your seats will stay for a long time.

  • Resistant against abrasions, heat, and water
  • Flexible and durable material
  • Lovely and delightful colors
  • Certified marine grade
  • Woven backing prevents tears
  • Bulky to install

Bry-Tech Pleated Marine Vinyl Fabric

eech

Do you experience challenges when manually folding thick vinyl fabrics to achieve that pleated design? In case you were not aware, Bry-Tech Pleated Marine Vinyl Fabric is one of the best solutions to this problem. The uniquely textured boat seat fabric can withstand heat, mold, and tension.

Akin to the Marine 1 model, this PVC-coated polyester fabric features repellent properties. These properties help protect your boat upholstery from sun and moisture. Apart from this brand being waterproof, it also prevents the formation of molds on surfaces keeping your boat seats safe from stains and mildew.

What makes this product distinctive is its pleated design. In a single yard, the pleats run vertically every 1.5 inches. The material not only fits the backrest upholstery but also gives your boat an elongated appearance.

If you prefer a clean and classic interior, this is the perfect choice for you. You can accent your boat accessories with this textured material, instead of keeping it safe with plain white. Hence, you can use it as an insert in your boat seats which makes them more refined and flawless.

The polyester padding gives this fabric a soft touch, which is a plus considering it has great aesthetics. The mesh backing, which is resistant to molds, provides extra protection against possible smells and mildew stains. So, you don’t have to worry about deep-seated spots growing on your seats.

Though it may seem a bit complicated to sew, it’s straightforward just like other vinyl products you may come across. You just need to measure it across the surface to be covered and fix it there. Get an industrial sewing machine or a professional to prevent any mishaps.

  • Prevents tension, heat, mildew, and mold
  • It comes with a unique pleated pattern
  • Numerous marine-related benefits
  • Completely waterproof
  • Offers a clean and classic interior
  • It may require you to have professional installation

VViVid Grey Weatherproof Vinyl Fabric

grey

If you are torn in between a deep black or a spotless white motif, then opt for the middle ground and pick the VViVid grey weatherproof vinyl fabric. It’s a neutral shade that creates a cool atmosphere that works in tandem with the soothing sounds of the ocean waves.

The leather finish of the PVC side supplements the elegance of the gray color. Note the material works best with pillows, cushions, and chairs. If you didn’t know, it’s one of the softest marine vinyl models we have encountered so far. It features a polyester mesh backing to allow the fabric to drape gracefully over the boat upholstery.

On the other hand, the fabric’s underside is friendly with the material on contact. This means you can easily staple the piece on soft surfaces such as wood . As a result, apart from boat use, it’s also used for restaurant chairs and table covers.

This gray boat seat cover material is spill-proof, similar to its white counterpart. The fabric is a safe pick if you are worried about the imaginary stains in your head. In case of spills, you can clean it with a damp cloth without causing discoloration on the surface.

It however faces some drawbacks. For starters, it’s softer making it slightly different from what is advertised. When close-fitted, some threads may pull and tear the fabric. You can avoid this by first stretching it over the surface with minimal tension before stapling or sewing.

  • It comes with a smooth faux leather texture
  • Best for boat cushions
  • It features a neutral and elegant shade
  • Resistant to dirt and water
  • When tightly installed it tends to tear

Sunbrella Black Canvas Fabric

Sunbrella

All the previous models feature PVC vinyl. Unfortunately, some users may not be fond of it as it seems a little synthetic, giving off an industrial vibe. Would you like to make your cabin homey? If yes, then get hold of the Sunbrella Black Canvas Fabric.

The fabric is not only a durable commercial-grade product, but it’s also an amazing option capable of withstanding harsh sunlight without fading its rich color. It’s ideal for a boater planning to decorate his cabin with beautiful drapery, throw pillows, and seat cushions. The product lives up to its creative name on sun proofing.

Boat lovers can also use this acrylic material for their outdoor boat deck seat covers. It’s ideal for resisting heat and moisture, hence preventing the growth of molds on the surface. However, to maintain the quality of the fabric, seats should be stored indoors after use.

Even though this marine upholstery fabric has a soft flow with a sturdy grip, it’s still a medium-weight product. It can uphold the integrity of your boat sails by effortlessly facing strong winds together with the harsh sun.

One setback of the fabric is its cleaning and maintenance requirements. Contrary to the other products, it may require brushing and soaking depending on the dirt level and stain buildup. To maintain the quality, it needs a regular care routine.

  • UV resistant
  • Softer compared to vinyl fabrics
  • Moisture and heat resistant
  • It may require washing or light brushing to clean

Boat Upholstery Buying Guide

There are several crucial factors you need to look at before you buy a boat upholstery fabric. Having read the above product reviews, it’s time to know the different features to consider.

upholdstery

When choosing a boat interior upholstery fabric, the most important consideration is the material. The 3 common upholstery materials are vinyl, mesh, and acrylic.

To add durability, acrylic upholstery is made of laminated fabric which is waterproof and fire-resistant. However, it’s not very versatile. In case you want to install the upholstery DIY style, this is a hard material to work with.

Mesh, which is a popular boat upholstery fabric, is the most visually appealing choice among the other options. Even though it may be expensive, it’s durable and water-resistant. The good thing is it offers plenty of choices in terms of design.

Another common boat seat upholstery material is vinyl. It’s a favorite to the majority of boat lovers. The reason is despite it being affordable it’s also versatile, unlike acrylic. There are numerous options available for various designs even though there are 2 types of vinyl you should know about.

Polyvinyl chloride, which is also known as expanded vinyl, is the best for boat seats. The material is not easily damaged and it’s also resistant to mold and mildew. Vinyl/polyester is the second type of vinyl. It’s a combination of polyester and vinyl. Similar to expanded vinyl, it’s also resistant to mold and mildew.

There are 3 major standard grades for boat fabrics in case you didn’t know. They include lightweight, marine-grade, and commercial-grade.

Lightweight fabrics are ordinary materials. They are not suitable for boats not unless you use them as boat seat fabric. Mold and mildew are a big problem because people might sit directly on the seats after coming from a swim.

If you want a boat fabric ideal for both interior and exterior, pick the marine-grade options. The material is specifically designed to protect your boat upholstery from typical problems subjected to your fabric when used on interior and exterior surfaces.

Commercial grade fabrics are durable and water-resistant just like marine-grade. The only difference is their texture and thickness. Commercial grades have a typical thickness of 1/8 inches, which allows them to have a more foam-like texture.

If you are a serious boater, you need to consider either marine-grade or commercial grade for your marine upholstery fabric. Commercial grade is the best for those boaters who prefer a thicker and more bouncy fabric.

Water Resistance

It’s vital to pick a water-resistant material for boat seats because boats will be in the water most of the time. However, there’s a difference between a water-resistant and waterproof material. Water-resistant material is resistant to water to a certain extent, while a waterproof material doesn’t allow water to penetrate at all.

Weatherproof

waterproof

When it comes to choosing marine upholstery fabric, weatherproof is another important feature to consider. It’s very critical for a material to be weatherproof, especially if it will be used on the boat’s exterior.

It’s good you differentiate between weatherproof, water-resistant, and waterproof features. Weatherproof focuses more on the fabric’s capacity to withstand varying weather conditions such as extreme heat or heavy rains. If your marine upholstery is not weatherproof, it may be prone to discoloration.

I wanted to give my deck boat to my niece as a gift, but she wanted a white-themed boat. So, I planned to re-upholster my craft with a fabric that suits her preferences. That’s when my friend told me about this Ottertex Marine Upholstery Fabric in white.

It is constructed from heavy-duty polyester, making it sturdy, thick, and pliable. At first glance, I thought it would be stiff and rigid to work with, but I realized that it is ideal for re-upholstering when I prepared the materials. Its quality enables you to use it almost anywhere, either indoors or outdoors.

I also like how it is easy to use and clean. Yes, this fabric may somehow be heavy but attaching it to your cushions, seats, pillows, or pads is simple. In my case, I used a marine adhesive to install it on my boat seats and other accessories, but you can also sew the fabric. For over four years of using this fabric, I only use a damp cloth for cleaning.

This fabric has an excellent waterproof capacity along with UV resistance of up to 500 hours. When I first used it on my boat seats, I was amazed at how well it holds up against water splashes and rain. Although it dramatically repels water, I still coat it with a marine sealant to increase its protection capabilities. I also noticed that it could resist extreme sunlight well.

  • With UV resistance of up to 500 hours
  • Has an excellent waterproof capacity
  • Not mildew-resistant

My friend offered to re-upholster my boat as a birthday gift because he knew that I’m currently occupied with other matters. I told him that I wanted leather-looking boat seats, and after just one day, my boat is ready! It is significantly different thanks to the Plastex Marine Upholstery Fabric, a black-colored fabric for boat seats.

I was amazed by its appearance and tested it immediately on water. I intend to buy another set for my other boat because its performance and quality is exceptional. Its stain-resistant feature and construction allow for simple usage and cleaning. You can remove every spill, stain, and dirt by wiping with a damp cloth. Moreover, because it is crafted with heavy-duty vinyl, it is sturdy, thick, and pliable. I love how easy it is to work with this material.

I’ve read other reviews saying that it is not waterproof, and I agree with them. I was once on a trip when a rain shower poured down, causing moisture to seep into my boat seats. It may not be entirely waterproof, but it still offers excellent water and stain resistance. Plus, after coating it with marine sealant, it holds well against heavy rain.

  • Crafted with heavy-duty vinyl
  • Features UV resistance with a lightfastness
  • Offers excellent water and stain resistance
  • Color may fade quickly over time

The Bry-Tech Marine Upholstery Fabric is among my most favorite material to work with because of its outstanding features. It is inexpensive but guarantees high-quality and professional outputs. Let me share with you my take on this fabric.

The product is easy to use and clean. Usually, the vinyl pieces I work with are stiff and not stretchy, but this fabric is different. Wrapping and attaching it to my boat upholstery is simple with staple guns. You can also use outdoor glue if you prefer. For cleaning, all you need is a damp cloth.

It is durable, thick, and stretchy thanks to its premium vinyl composition. While working with this material, I noticed how strong it is because even after a series of pulling and stretching, it remains firm and holds the shape of my boat’s upholstery.

What I love most about this product is that it offers abrasion and flammable resistance. This fabric is bright white, so I am sensitive to scratches and marks. Fortunately, it can stand against intense friction from various elements or movements. I also like that it doesn’t melt after being exposed to extreme heat.

In line with that, it has exceptional waterproof and UV resistance. I already expected that a marine-grade vinyl upholstery fabric should possess this quality, but it exceeds my expectations. It dries up quickly after being soaked in heavy rain, and its color doesn’t fade even when exposed to harsh sunlight for prolonged periods.

  • Made with premium vinyl
  • Exceptional waterproof and UV resistant
  • Offers abrasion and flammable resistance
  • Noticeable strong odor upon opening

Marine Vinyl Fabric is among the best brands producing quality upholstery for boats. Honestly, I was intrigued when I first heard of their name because my friend gave me a good pitch regarding their Marine Upholstery Fabric in white. Most of my pontoon boats are covered with white upholstery, so I gave this a try.

This product is easy to use and clean. My friend told me to use glue to stick it on my boat seats because it makes the fabric stronger than sewing. However, I mixed both stitches and adhesive to ensure security. I also stapled some onto my bench seats. Everything seemed to hold up well since I didn’t have to repair them immediately. You can wipe clean the fabric whenever you need.

It is made with heavyweight polyester materials, making it waterproof, durable, and flexible. Its material allows you to cut and fit the fabric quickly to every boat article. It is indeed workable and saves you time and effort because it repels water exceptionally.

I love this product because it offers excellent scratch and dirt resistance. I find it essential for boat fabrics to provide abrasion and grime resistance, especially those with neutral color because any marking is noticeable. Besides that, it is also protected with an anti-ultraviolet solution that allows the fabric to withstand harsh sunlight.

  • Made with heavyweight polyester materials
  • Offers excellent scratch and dirt resistance
  • Protected with Anti-Ultraviolet solution
  • Waterproof, durable, and flexible
  • Creases may be challenging to remove

First, it is made with high-quality vinyl that is sufficient to stand against different marine conditions. I like its textured front and polyester back. The faux leather style gives off a natural vibe to my boat, which is enticing for everyone who sees it.

Its fabric is also a wipe clean away, so you’ll never have to worry that it may turn into a nasty eyesore.

Suppose you are looking for a boat seat upholstery material thicker than regular canvas and intended for marine or outdoor use. In that case, the Payless Fabric Marine Upholstery Fabric might be your answer. When I first heard of this product, I was amazed by their wide color options, but the most striking shade for me was the Dove Gray. It complements well with other colors and is pleasing to the eyes.

Besides that, this fabric is made with high-grade vinyl, which is an ideal material for marine or outdoor use because it is impenetrable by water. It is also equipped with anti-ultraviolet solutions to protect against various outdoor elements.

In line with that, it offers excellent mildew and fade resistance. Normally, molds and mildews will cover my boat seats quickly, but the seats covered with this fabric have no mildew build-up even after a few months of storage. I also noticed that the color doesn’t fade while being exposed to harsh heat and heavy rain. I’ve been using this fabric for three years now, and it still looks new.

In addition, it is favorably both durable and workable, making it easy to install and clean. It only took me a few hours from preparation to installation, and the result was flawless. It has no wrinkles, even in rounded corners. Maintaining the fabric’s cleanliness requires minimal time and effort with a clean damp cloth to wipe away dirt and stains.

  • Made with high-grade vinyl
  • Offers excellent mildew and fade resistance
  • Treated with Anti-Ultraviolet and waterproof solutions
  • Durable and tough yet workable
  • Fabric may be heavy for some users

I wanted to redo my bass boat’s overall design, and it took me months before I found this Bry-Tech Marine Upholstery Fabric. This boat upholstery material is different from the rest as it features a pleated design, which caught my attention. With this style, I don’t even have to fold the material manually.

This black-colored pleated fabric is easy to use and install. I attached it to my boat seats with a staple gun, and the output is superb. Even my neighbor asked me where I bought this material because it is aesthetically pleasing once installed.

It is made with premium vinyl that is specifically crafted to withstand any circumstances. Due to its construction, it is soft, thick, durable, and pliable. Although it is bulky, I still added cushion and padding to provide additional comfort. These features surely make your life easier, especially when you are installing them alone.

This product is one of the best marine upholstery fabric s not only because of its design but also because it offers excellent water, UV, tear, mildew, and flame resistance. It is rare to find a marine material that provides style and all-around protection, but you can find these features in this product.

  • Easy to use and install
  • Features a pleated design
  • Offers excellent water, UV, tear, mildew, and flame resistance
  • Soft, thick, durable, and pliable
  • Has an overpowering smell at first

My father wants to redo his boat seat vinyl because he wanted to take my mother on a trip for their anniversary. He asked me for a favor to find a material that will match his modern-themed boat. So, I looked for different options until I found this gray Plastex Marine Upholstery Fabric.

It is made with quality vinyl that has a neutral shade to match any occasion. Plus, once it is installed, it gives off a stylish appearance resembling genuine leather. My father was very pleased with the results, and covered all his boat seats with this fabric.

Further, this product is easy to use. All I did was use an adhesive spray to stick it onto the boat seats. Additionally, it is strong, thick, and stretchy. After several pulls and folds, all seats were covered excellently. Cleaning this fabric is also not a problem. You can use a sponge or soft-bristled brush to scrub the material with mild soap and water. Remember to rinse thoroughly, then wipe off the excess water, and let it dry naturally.

This product also has great waterproof and tear resistance. My father once told me that a typhoon destroyed his boatshed, and his boat was left soaked under the heavy rain. When he returned to check on his vessel, its condition seemed like no rain had passed by! Plus, there are only minimal scratches on unnoticeable parts of the fabric. From that experience, I can say with confidence that it holds up against various elements.

  • Made with quality vinyl
  • Great waterproof and tear resistance
  • Can hold up against various elements
  • Strong, thick, and stretchy
  • Emits a strong paint smell upon opening

When I bought a bowrider from a friend, he suggested that I consider re-upholstering because he stopped caring for his boat several years ago. I immediately looked for a replacement that is identical or at least close enough to its original look. That’s when I found this VViViD Marine Upholstery Fabric.

It is made with excellent-quality vinyl with polyester backing to ensure reliable performance on various surfaces. Although, I’ve read reviews that it looks thin and cheap, that’s not the case, in my experience. It looks like genuine leather and matches my boat’s modern look.

It offers durability, thickness, and flexibility because of its construction. This boat seat material is sturdier than the fabric it was replacing. It doesn’t tear quickly and holds the seats’ shape accordingly. Moreover, it requires simple installation. All I did was use an adhesive spray to install it on my boat seats. For cleaning, wiping the fabric with a damp cloth is all it takes to restore it to its excellent condition.

I like this product because it features great UV, scratch, and grime resistance. I bought this product three years ago, and I haven’t replaced it since then. Sunlight quickly degrades other vinyl, but this fabric withstands extreme sunlight without any sign of fading or deterioration.

  • Simple installation and cleaning
  • Made with excellent-quality vinyl
  • Features great UV, scratch, and grime resistance
  • Offers durability, thickness, and flexibility
  • The harsh smell may take some time to disappear

My friend suggested the USA Fabric Store Marine Upholstery Fabric in the color of Pacific Blue to match my newly bought deck boat’s theme. I had high expectations because of my friend’s feedback, and indeed, it did not disappoint.

This product is easy to use. Preparation and installation took me only a few hours, and after several stretches and stapling, my boat looks brand new with this high-quality fabric. For cleaning, all you need to do is wipe the dirt or stains using a damp cloth and let it air dry.

It is crafted with standard vinyl, making it water repellent. Like any other boat vinyl upholstery, it is ideal for replacing your marine vessel’s aged seats. This product is sturdy yet soft, allowing you to handle it with ease. Even though it is not as stretchy as other vinyl, it will not quickly tear even if you pull it over your seats’ corners.

Further, it features exceptional mildew and UV resistance. Mildew is common in humid places, and my location is not an exception. Typically, my boat seats will be covered with mildews after a few weeks of storage, but my boats with this fabric remain spotless. All I have to do is wipe away the accumulated dirt, and they’re good as new. Plus, the color doesn’t fade even after extended exposure under the sun.

  • Crafted with standard vinyl
  • Features exceptional mildew and UV resistance
  • Sturdy yet soft
  • Comes with a 30-day satisfaction guarantee
  • Not as stretchy as other vinyl

I was looking for a boat seat cover material that will match the under-the-water theme of my boat when I saw the AquaGuard Marine Upholstery Fabric in turquoise. This product is intended for marine and outdoor purposes.

Although it took me hours to install this fabric, it is still manageable as I only need to pull and stretch it while stapling its edges to the seats. The cleaning process is hassle-free as all you need is a damp cloth to wipe away stains and dirt.

It is constructed from polyester and polyester blend, making it durable and resilient. In general, it is thick, strong, and supple. I like how easy its high-quality material doesn’t tear down quickly despite stretching and pulling on all sides. However, it might be a little bit bulky when sewing, so make sure you find the correct needle.

Additionally, it is protected with an anti-ultraviolet solution, which allows the fabric to stand against harsh sunlight. I also noticed its exceptional waterproof and abrasion resistance.

  • Quick installation and cleaning
  • Constructed from polyester and polyester blend
  • Exceptional waterproof and abrasion resistance
  • Thick and strong yet supple
  • Might be a little bit bulky when sewing

The Mybecca Marine Upholstery Fabric caught my attention as I was looking for a replacement for my deck’s boat seat fabric. Honestly, I did not include this product in my initial list of options, but it is the only fabric that matches my needs at that time. So, I tried buying one and didn’t expect too much.

Upon receiving the product, I was surprised by the product’s quality. It is soft yet slightly thick and durable. When I tested the fabric by wrapping it around my indoor couch cushion, I found that it didn’t tear quickly even after cutting, stretching, and folding.

This product is very easy to install. All I did was stretch and staple the fabric to hold the seat’s form. You can also sew this fabric if you like. I also didn’t have any problems with cleaning the product once it is installed. You can use a damp cloth to wipe away any dirt or spills.

What stood out for me is its faux leather material, making it ideal as a boat cushion fabric. Faux leather is an excellent alternative for genuine leather, especially if you want to economize. Although other fabric made from the same material looks like a natural leather rip-off, this product begs to differ. It has higher quality than other fabrics with the same material and price.

I also like that it offers high resistance to water, stains, abrasions, and heat. I like how it holds up against various harsh conditions, like extreme sunlight or heavy rain. I also like that this product requires low care and maintenance. It will continue to remain in its peak condition without the need for expensive solutions or cleaners.

  • Made with faux leather
  • Offers high resistance to water, stains, abrasions, and heat
  • Requires low care and maintenance
  • Soft yet slightly thick and durable
  • Fabric may be uncomfortable to use during hot weather

Sunbrella is among the most popular brands manufacturing outdoor fabric. All of their products are innovative and durable, including their Sunbrella Marine Upholstery Fabric. It is made with Sunbrella acrylic fabric, a special material that provides the finest outdoor fabric performance.

What I love about this product is that it has exceptional UV, fade, and stain resistance. The first time I came across Sunbrella fabric was in 2010, and I’m still using it on some of my boats now. All of my Sunbrella marine fabrics are exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods, but they don’t fade nor deteriorate. They also repel mildew and dirt.

I used this product primarily as my boat interior fabric, and it holds up well, even after many years of use. I also used it as my boat’s bimini, and it looks brand new even after being exposed to various elements. Upon using this product, I can say that it is long-lasting, thick, and workable. I thought it would be difficult to stitch through the fabric because it is thick, but I was wrong. Working with this product is simple as it is soft and medium weight.

You can quickly staple and sew the fabric according to your preference. Additionally, cleaning is simple. All you need to do is wash the fabric with mild soap and lukewarm water and let it dry naturally. You can scrub stubborn stains, but use a soft-bristled brush to avoid damaging the fabric.

  • Made with Sunbrella acrylic fabric
  • Has exceptional UV, fade, and stain resistance
  • Long-lasting, thick, and workable
  • Comes with a 5-year warranty
  • Fabric is not waterproof

My uncle gave me his old cuddy cabin before his family migrated to another country. I immediately examined it for possible modifications and realized that it was still in excellent conditions, except for its boat seats. The covers were severely mildewed with various stains on them.

I tried all the homemade and commercial mildew removers I could think of, but none effectively restored the seats. So, I decided to replace the seat covering material with the Usauto Marine Upholstery Fabric, made with quality vinyl. I used this product to cover my car seats and still had some leftovers to utilize.

Like other marine vinyl upholstery fabric, this product features simple installation. I used a 3M adhesive instead of staples to cover my boat seats to ensure a smooth overall appearance. I also like how easy it is to clean this fabric. During our first trip with this cuddy cabin, my nephew came along with us, and his muddy boots left several marks on my boat seats. Fortunately, it is easy to clean with a damp cloth.

Moreover, it is designed as a heat-sealable fabric. You can heat seal its edges to ensure that it will not fray over time. It also offers great resistance to UV, abrasions, and water. I’ve been using this product for a year now, and it is still in its best condition.

  • Offers great resistance to UV, abrasions, and water
  • Designed as a heat sealable fabric
  • Strong and thick enough
  • Fabric is slightly stiff or not stretchy

If you feel like you’re making the wrong decision while choosing the best marine upholstery fabric, you are not alone. When it comes to upgrading a boat’s upholstery, almost all boat owners face this issue. If you want to economize and keep your boat at its best condition, it is essential to keep the following factors in mind.

Most boaters say that time will tell if the material is durable or not. However, in my experience, there’s a way to know if the fabric is long-lasting. I always look at the fabric’s structural layers to determine whether it is sturdy.

Some materials are built with several layers to ensure durability, while others are made to be thin but with construction that resembles those of thick materials. Thus, you should always carefully examine the fabric’s layers and structure.

When buying marine upholstery fabrics, you will certainly come across marine-grade and commercial-grade labels. However, the question is, what’s the difference? I always go for the marine-grade fabric because it is intended to brave against various marine conditions. In contrast, a commercial-grade fabric is mainly made of inferior materials to fit a boater’s tight budget. So, if you prioritize quality, choose marine-grade fabrics

A marine fabric’s overall performance depends on its material. So, it is vital to choose a fabric that is intended for marine purposes, like vinyl. Moreover, a fabric’s resistance to elements and breathability varies from one material to another.

Among the most important factors when choosing marine upholstery fabrics is its waterproof capacity to ensure that you can use it for a long time. If you cannot find a material that is waterproof, go for a fabric that is at least water-resistant.

Resistance to Elements

Choose a marine upholstery fabric that can resist against ultraviolet sunlight, dirt, mildew, and stains. It is important to keep this in mind if you want to prolong your material’s life and ensure its stability. You wouldn’t want to buy a fabric that is good for only one boat trip.

Easy to Clean

Another factor to watch out for is if the fabric is easy to clean. Most marine upholstery fabric I use requires only a damp cloth for cleaning. However, others require scrubbing the material with soap and water. So, if you want to extend your fabric’s life without exerting too much effort, choose wisely.

If you are interested in how to properly clean marine upholstery fabric, please read my articles on the mold removers for boat seats and my guide on the boat vinyl cleaners , they will help you easily clean your boat seat.

The Different Types of Marine Upholstery Fabric

Whenever I go to a marine upholstery shop near me, I always see various marine upholstery fabrics, from artificial leather to polyurethane. However, the most common types of marine material are vinyl and acrylic. Vinyl is sturdier and easier to clean than acrylic, but acrylic is softer. So, choose the right type depending on your needs.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Marine Upholstery Fabric

Many people misunderstand the concept of marine upholstery fabric. Although others may find it a mere boat accessory, it is, in reality, vital to maintain a boat’s overall structure.

Marine upholstery fabric is used primarily to accentuate your boat. Your vessel’s appearance will significantly vary if you are not using a marine fabric. It is expected that your boat’s interior will deteriorate as time passes. Still, if you choose to use such material, you will be able to restore your vessel to its original condition.

Besides your boat’s appearance, another benefit of using a marine upholstery fabric is that it provides protection. It is normal to face various outside elements when traveling on the water. That is why it is crucial to cover your boat’s fragile parts, like the boat seats. You can also protect yourself from getting infected by various bacteria because it is easy to clean your boat.

Honestly, I don’t see any drawback from using marine upholstery fabric other than the additional expenses that it will incur, specifically if you buy several sets of material because you made the wrong choice.

boat-seat-material

The best material for boat seats is vinyl, which is the most common for marine upholstery fabric because of its high resistance to water and sunlight. Moreover, it blocks mildews, molds, and dirt from forming on the fabric. Although vinyl is said to be unbreathable during hot weather, most marine vinyl fabric is layered with a breathable lining to let moisture evaporate quickly and enable you to use it comfortably in all seasons.

Waterproof allows the material to become impenetrable by water and can withstand an intense amount of water. On the other hand, water-resistant means a fabric can repel water but only to a limited volume.

So, if you ask, which is better, waterproof or water-resistant marine upholstery fabric? I would say that waterproof is better than water-resistant because the latter still tends for water to penetrate and damage your upholstery in the long run.

It is pretty expensive to depend on a professional if you are working with big projects, so most boat owners choose the do it yourself marine upholstery. Although it is time-consuming, with the proper procedure, materials, and equipment, you can achieve pro-looking marine upholstery.

As a quick brush-up, the best marine upholstery fabric is an excellent way to maintain your boat’s overall appearance and condition. Choose a specifically designed material for marine purposes, like vinyl, which is versatile as you can use it indoors and outdoors. I know how challenging it is to find a suitable fabric, so I hope this review serves as your handy guide.

best marine upholstery fabric

The best marine upholstery fabric can do wonders on the visual appeal of your boat. It can also help in keeping your boat clean which makes it a wise investment.

However, with plenty of options out there and the lack of proper information on selecting boat upholstery material, the decision-making process can be quite challenging. If this is your case, then you don’t have to worry.

In this article, we have shortlisted the top-rated marine upholstery fabric in the market to help you know which ones are the best. We have also thrown in a comprehensive buying guide to make things a lot easier for you.

1. Bry-Tech Marine1 Vinyl Upholstery Fabric

bry-tech marine1 vinyl upholstery fabric

We’re starting with a great commercial-grade product from Bry-Tech. This product is made of vinyl, the most widely-used boat upholstery fabric. It’s regarded as a very durable and flexible material, so you’ll never go wrong with this product.

What I love about this product is that it comes in a wide range of solid colors which is ideal for minimalists. The fabrics don’t have patterns so it’s easy to fit into any interior decorations. Also, they both have cool and warm colors which are all perfect choices for whatever weather or climate your area has.

Bry-Tech’s marine grade upholstery fabric is fit for both indoor and outdoor use. I find this convenient because it means it can be used for boats, vehicles, and homes. For outdoor use, it’s infused with UV inhibitors so its color will remain vibrant for years.

The feature I love the most about this product is its moisture-resistant build. This means you can just enjoy sailing and having fun without worrying about water splashes. No matter the weather, your boat will remain free from mold and mildew if you use this product. All these features can ensure that you can have more rides and less maintenance work with your boat.

This product is ideal for boat seats or couches. Their fabrics have different surface textures and patterns so you have plenty of options. A leather-look is a usual go-to for boat cushions, and this product has plenty of those in various colors.

Once you’ve chosen the fabric you want, you can easily install it anywhere by stapling or sewing it in place. Vinyl is soft enough for a needle and staple wire but tough enough to endure constant use. This means that this marine-grade and the commercial-grade product are a great deal to grab.

The only thing I find inconvenient about this product is its smell when used indoors. I suggest you use this on areas exposed to the sun or air. If you have a boat with a cabin beneath the deck, this product isn’t the best choice for its seats.

  • Marine-grade; ideal for boats or any water vessel
  • Durable and flexible
  • Resistant to UV rays
  • Resistant to moisture, molds, and mildew
  • Comes in a variety of solid colors
  • Smells when used indoors/underneath the cabin

Overall, I highly recommend this product. In minimizes maintenance work, allowing you to enjoy your boat more. Just use it for the outdoors, and it’d be perfect!

vvivid blue faux leather marine vinyl fabric

Nothing says ocean than a rich, blue color which is the color that VViVuD’s product comes in. This product is a great marine fabric for boats and an ideal upholstery fabric for couch cushions, monoblocs, benches, etc. Just because of its various applications alone, I’m loving this product already.

This marine-grade vinyl fabric is made of very durable and flexible vinyl material. It feels and looks like natural leather which gives that simple yet elegant look to your boat. I love that this product is made durable without compromising its looks. With this, your boat is going to look fine for a long time.

What I admire most about this product is the film that is layered on top of the vinyl. It acts like a wax that makes anything it covers waterproof and UV-resistant. In other words, this heavy-duty film can withstand any weather, making your boat rides unstoppable come rain or shine.

This product is also resistant to stains and scratches. It can protect your boat seats and cushions from dirt buildup and damage in case someone gets a little clumsy. You can easily clean it using a dump cloth. Needless to say, this product can take your worries away when you and your family decide to have fun in the boat.

This amazing marine upholstery material can take care of your boat for you, reducing its need for maintenance. Investing in this product means saving time and money in the long run which, for me, is extremely beneficial. You can spend more time sailing than cleaning with VViViD!

What I dislike about this product is that it’s a bit challenging to install because it doesn’t stick easily to surfaces. If it doesn’t latch on the first try, you’ll have glue residue to clean. So, you must utilize a strong adhesive and clean the surface thoroughly before pressing on this fabric.

  • Resistant to UV light
  • Resistant to stains and scratches
  • Have various applications
  • Inconvenient to install

Given its features and benefits, I highly recommend this product for your boat and other indoor and outdoor surfaces. If you find a great adhesive, this product should flawlessly perform its job for you. Worry less and enjoy more by having this marine vinyl protect your boat from the weather and the water. Trust me; it’s worth it.

marine vinyl fabric

Third on our list is also made of the best boat upholstery material, vinyl. It has a faux but natural-looking leather finish that appears and feels like natural leather. It comes in various solid colors that can serve everyone’s aesthetic tastes. It’s another product that I and other minimalists love for its clean, classic, and elegant look.

Beyond its look, this product can protect any surface from UV rays for 500+ hours. That’s beauty, heavy-duty capacity, and durability (because it’s made of viny) in one product. It allows you to protect your boat seats in a style that I absolutely love. Its UV inhibitors also make this product ideal for purses, outdoor booths, tables, chairs, etc.

Due to its marine-grade build, this vinyl fabric is completely resistant to water; not a drop goes through it. So, you don’t have to worry about splashes anymore no matter how rough the boat ride gets. Consequently, it prevents mold and mildews from building up. Its smooth surface also repels stains so you can easily clean it with a damp cloth.

As a result, this product will reduce cleaning time and delay maintenance work, freeing up more of your time. Its material and features make it durable enough to withstand constant beating so it’ll last long, extending your boat’s life.

This product is also easy to install. It comes in rolls, but because it’s made of 100% PVC, you won’t see any folds once you unroll it. It’ll be ready to apply once you receive it which is very convenient. A heavy-duty sewing machine is enough to secure it in place.

My only complaint about this product is it’s a bit clingy and sticky. You can feel your clothes getting pulled a little when you stand up from your seat. You have to wipe the product a few times to remove its stickiness.

  • Heavy-duty UV protection
  • Resistant to mold and mildew
  • Has various applications

Overall, I’d recommend this product to you. After wiping off the stickiness, this product should be in perfect condition to protect any surface you put it on. Get ready to spend more amazing moments as you sail worry-free with Marine Vinyl Fabric!

plastex marine vinyl fabric

The next marine upholstery fabric on this list is by Plastex, and it comes in glorious, vibrant colors. It’s made of marine vinyl and 100% PVC fabric which is ideal for your boat and other water vessels.

This product’s material makes it very durable and flexible enough to withstand frequent usage without tearing apart. You can use this material for a long time so you can save money with it in the long run. It’s a wise investment if you use it on vehicles and any materials that you want to last.

I love the various features this product has. This marine-grade fabric can protect boats from the sunlight for more than 500 hours. I love this feature because it means the colors will not fade easily and I can have long sailing times. Any part of your boat at risk of deteriorating due to the harmful UV rays can finally be protected.

This product is also resistant to water. Therefore, it prevents mold and mildews from building up no matter how frequent you use your boat. Additionally, it also repels stains, so cleaning it is a breeze. Basically, this product has everything you need from a marine fabric to help extend your boat’s life.

This product resembles the look and texture of leather, so it’s going to withstand the elements in style. Plus, it also comes with features that help delay maintenance work and major cleanup me. This product is an excellent fabric for boat seats, purses, headboards, and car upholstery. It takes away the nightmare brought by spills and splashes from exciting, bumpy rides in land and water.

The only downside of this product is that it creases easily when folded. You must install it carefully so it doesn’t fold when you lay some weight on it. Also, roll any excess and store it standing up to keep it crease-free.

  • Has UV inhibitors
  • Resists mold, mildew, and stains
  • Comes in plenty of solid colors
  • Folds or creases easily

I confidently encourage you to buy this boat seat fabric. When installed and kept properly, this product can’t do you any wrong. It applies to vehicles and furniture, and it has features that can extend the life of anything it protects.

vvivid white faux leather marine vinyl fabric

This ViViD product is a great fabric for boat cushions. It’s made of 100% PVC material that feels like soft, natural leather for maximum comfort. It’s extremely durable and flexible, giving long-lasting protection for your boat seats.

I love that this product has excellent features such as UV inhibitors. This feature gives protection against the sun so the fabric won’t lose its color and brilliance. It’s also water-resistant, so this product can remain untorn even if exposed to extreme weather conditions. Therefore, it’s ideal for both indoor and outdoor use.

Because it’s marine-grade, it’s specifically effective against saltwater and other marine deposits or elements. It’s the perfect protection against splashes for any water vessel for fishing or just leisure sailing.

What I admire most about this product is its resistance to cuts and scratches. This gives great relief to boat owners with people on board who tend to have too much fun. This anti-scratch feature protects your seats from guests who have pointy items or accessories with them.

To top it all off, this VViViD product is resistant to stains. So, if you cover your boat and car seats with this, your fear of spillage will be over. This is great if you have kids and clumsy adults around or you live near rough roads and waters. You can finally go through bumpy drives with fewer worries in mind.

It’s easy to clean. A damp cloth should be enough to remove any debris and liquid that has beaded on the surface. With all the features of this product, your boat seat will no longer need major clean-ups and maintenance work.

You can easily install this product by sewing, stapling, or gluing it down. A carpet glue should do the trick. Use the one for outdoor application.

The only negative this product has is it doesn’t come with adhesive so you must buy your own. Also, it’s white so when it deteriorates after a long time, the stains will be noticeable right away.

  • Comfortable, durable, and long-lasting
  • Resistant to stains, cuts, and scratches
  • Doesn’t come with adhesive

This product is the best fabric for boat cushions I found so far. Its cons are negligible because there are alternatives to adhesives. Also, you can benefit from it for a long time before so it provides so much value for your money.

bry-tech marine1 pleated vinyl upholstery fabric

This product is made of the best marine vinyl fabric material that comes in many brilliant colors. The fabric is pleated for that extra sass and elegance that lifts its aesthetic quality. This is an excellent product to protect and accessorize your boat.

Bry-Tech has yet again introduced a marine-grade product that protects your boat seats from splashes of saltwater. It repels moisture, beading it on its surface, and marine deposits so you can clean it with a wet cloth. I love this feature because it lets me spend more time enjoying the boat instead of cleaning it.

It’s also resistant to UV rays so its color won’t fade easily, and the material won’t crack under intense heat. All these features make sure that your boat will sail with its seats well-protected, come rain or shine.

This product is also commercial-grade, so it’s durable and able to withstand constant and long-term use. Anything covered by this product is guaranteed to last longer than it should. Use this product on any item you wish to keep for life.

It’s also easy to sew or staple onto chairs, tables, etc. Given all these features, this product is also ideal for land vehicles (cars, trailers, campers) and outdoor areas. With it being weatherproof and stain-resistant, you can finally have more fun time and less cleaning time.

Even though I love the pleats, I also dislike it at the same time. It’s not deep but can still trap dirt. Eventually, you may see dirt lining the crevices if you don’t always wipe it properly.

  • Durable and long-lasting
  • UV-resistant; won’t fade and crack easily
  • Stain-resistant
  • Has various colors and applications
  • The pleats may trap dirt

Regardless of its tendency to trap dirt, I still highly recommend this product. You can just simply wipe the fabric properly every time so the dirt doesn’t build up. Overall, it’s a great product to protect your priced seats, cushions, and furniture.

aquaguard marine vinyl fabric

If you’re looking for upholstery vinyl that’s specifically designed for marine environments, then this product from Aquaguard is a great choice. Due to its high-quality construction and enhanced durability, it’s perfect for use not just for marine upholstery but also for any project that requires heavy-duty marine vinyl.

I love how it can withstand the harsh environment of the outdoors, protecting my surfaces from the elements, and making them last longer. Contributing to its durability are the waterproof and anti-UV properties that enable it to remain the same, rain or shine.

Aside from this, I also found that its spider weave backing further enhances its durability as it allows it to withstand the wear and tear from constant use as well as the harsh outdoor elements.

Moreover, this marine vinyl also has a high abrasion or double rub rating, getting a score of 100,000+. This is due to its .95mm vinyl face that allows it to last as long as it does despite the constant exposure to the marine environment.

What’s more, it comes in an extensive range of colors, allowing you to choose the best one that fits your boat’s décor.

However, the only downside I found was that its thick nature makes it difficult to work with at times.

  • Highly durable construction
  • Provides long-lasting protection
  • Has anti-UV properties for long-lasting durability
  • Has a high abrasion rating
  • Comes in a wide variety of colors
  • Its thickness can be somewhat difficult to work with

Despite this, it’s still an overall great product for marine upholstery as it provides durability and longevity that can withstand the harsh outdoors and marine environment.

mybecca marine vinyl faux leather fabric

For those who want a classic white leather appearance for their marine upholstery, you might want to check out this faux leather fabric from Mybecca.

Made from high-quality vinyl, this product mimics the appearance of leather, giving your boat upholstery a touch of classic elegance that only leather provides. However, leather doesn’t work well with the harsh marine environment which is why I found this faux leather version the next best thing.

Aside from its appearance, I love how it’s water-resistant as well, making it perfect to serve as a marine upholstery fabric because it can withstand the moisture it’s constantly exposed to. Moreover, since it’s faux leather rather than actual leather, it’s considered very animal-friendly as well.

It’s also quite durable and long-lasting, allowing it to bear the constant exposure to the elements like sunlight, water, and more. The surface is very easy to clean as well, making it a low-maintenance option for busy boat owners.

Although this one is white, I also love how there are other colors available that allow me to mix and match as I please to match my boat’s chosen aesthetic. Its appearance is also high-quality enough that you can mistake it for actual leather rather than vinyl.

It’s also fairly easy to clean so there’s no need to worry about maintaining its appearance, allowing boat owners to keep its pristine appearance with less effort.

However, what I disliked about this is that it can also be difficult to work with, especially manually due to its thickness. It also lacks UV protection so it can still damage the fabric with long-term exposure.

  • Has a faux leather look that adds class to boat upholstery
  • Water-resistant so it can be used for boat surfaces
  • Provides longevity and durability
  • Available in different colors
  • Can be difficult to work with, especially when done manually
  • Lack of UV protection

Despite these downsides, it’s overall a great product for marine upholstery as it provides durability and longevity. Moreover, it has a classy appearance that can also stand the test of time.

vvivid bycast65 correct-grain marine vinyl fabric

If you want the more classic leather look, then this faux leather marine vinyl fabric from VviViD is the ideal option for you. With its soft leather-like texture, it will have you thinking that you’re using real leather instead of vinyl.

Aside from its almost authentic appearance and feel, this marine vinyl fabric is considered suitable for heavy-duty uses like boat upholstery. It’s also completely weatherproof so you don’t have to worry about it being exposed to harsh weather conditions.

Moreover, it’s waterproof and UV-resistant so exposure to the harsh elements won’t affect its durability and long-lasting service. It’s also grime- and scratch-resistant so preserving its stunning appearance is no issue.

Additionally, it’s a low-maintenance type of fabric so cleaning it is a breeze. I love how I only need a damp cloth to restore its pristine look and its waterproof property making it resistant to stains caused by spills.

This leatherette vinyl fabric is perfect not just for marine use but also for various other uses, making it a versatile choice for many. It comes in 2 neutral colors too, adding a classic touch of elegance to boat upholstery.

However, what I didn’t like is that it lacks the flexibility of actual leather so it can be a bit difficult to work with.

  • Features a real leather-like appearance and feel
  • Highly durable, meant for heavy-duty projects
  • Weatherproof, waterproof, and UV-resistant
  • Grime- and scratch-resistant as well
  • Cleaning and maintenance of this fabric is a breeze
  • Offers increased versatility for different projects
  • Can be difficult to work with

Nevertheless, considering this isn’t actual leather, its lack of flexibility is a minor issue. Overall, this vinyl upholstery fabric is perfect if you want the classic elegance of leather but want the overall durability and low-maintenance quality of vinyl.

mybecca black marine upholstery vinyl fabric

Next on the list is another vinyl upholstery fabric from Mybecca which features a leather-like appearance and texture as well. At first glance, you’ll actually think it’s real leather with its realistic leather-like appearance and even its texture.

However, unlike leather, this upholstery fabric offers the increased durability and longevity that only vinyl could provide. It offers high resistance to both weather and water, making it perfect for environments exposed to a lot of moisture like boats.

Moreover, it offers high resistance to UV rays as well so you don’t have to worry about the harsh sunlight compromising the integrity of your upholstery. Additionally, it’s grime, dirt, and scratch-resistant as well, allowing you to preserve its pristine appearance with ease.

Its surface is made from 100% vinyl fabric with a backing constructed out of 100% polyester. This allows it to handle heavy-duty environments like the one in boats as it can withstand the harsh weather conditions of the outdoors.

Aside from this, I love how it’s easy to clean as well, making it another low-maintenance option for those looking for upholstery fabric that is similar to real leather.

However, what I only disliked about this material is that it’s prone to creasing so if I fold it, it leaves a mark.

  • Weather- and waterproof
  • Highly resistant to UV rays
  • Provides increased resistance to dirt, grime, and scratches
  • Offers a realistic leather-like appearance
  • Highly durable and long-lasting construction
  • Perfect for marine environments
  • Material is prone to creasing

Nonetheless, it’s a minor issue and it doesn’t affect the product’s overall quality so I’d say it’s still a great option for those who want a more manageable fabric for their boat upholstery or projects.

plastex fabrics vinyl yellow fabric

If you’re looking for a piece of more versatile vinyl fabric, then this one from Plastex can be a great option. It features a bright lemon yellow appearance that can help brighten up your marine upholstery.

What I love about it is that it’s soft and flexible, allowing me to easily cut and work with it compared to other vinyl fabrics.

Moreover, it’s machine-washable so I don’t have to worry about the yellow fabric staining as I can simply remove it from my boat surfaces and pop it in the washing machine. Aside from this, because it’s made from 100% vinyl, it’s fairly water-resistant as well, perfect for marine environments like boats.

However, what I dislike about it is that it’s not really marine-grade vinyl so it doesn’t have other protective features like scratch-, dirt-, and weatherproof as well as protection against harsh UV rays. As such, it might not last as long as marine-grade vinyl fabrics.

  • Flexible and easy to work with
  • Machine-washable
  • Made from 100% vinyl
  • Water-resistant

Not specifically designed for marine environments

Nevertheless, if you’re looking for something versatile rather than something specific to marine environments, then this vinyl fabric can be a great option for you.

vvivid grey faux leather marine vinyl fabric

Last on the list is this weatherproof marine vinyl fabric from VViViD. This fabric features a leather-like appearance and texture but is made from 100% marine-grade vinyl, thereby, making it a suitable option for boat upholstery.

As the name suggests, it features a weatherproof construction that allows it to withstand the harsh outdoor conditions, especially the ones most boats are subjected to. Because of this, it’s a highly durable fabric that can be used for any heavy-duty use, particularly for boats.

Aside from this, I love how completely waterproof it is, allowing it to preserve its structural integrity despite being constantly exposed to moisture and the elements. Moreover, I love how it features UV-resistance, a feature that helps maintain its appearance and integrity.

This allows you to enjoy your marine upholstery for a longer time and with its scratch- and dirt-resistant properties, you can enjoy its classy and elegant appearance as well.

Furthermore, it’s also a low-maintenance type of fabric so you don’t have to worry about having to scrub it heavily to remove tough dirt and stains.

The only downside I found with this is that the polyester mesh backing isn’t as sturdy as I’d hoped.

  • Highly durable marine-grade fabric
  • Waterproof and weatherproof
  • Resistant to UV rays, dirt, and grime
  • Low-maintenance fabric that can easily be cleaned
  • Perfect for heavy-duty use and harsh outdoor conditions
  • Backing could be a bit sturdier

Despite the backing not as durable, this marine-grade vinyl fabric offers a high level of durability and a longer lifespan while providing you with the classy and elegant look of leather. This makes it one of the top marine upholstery fabric on the market.

best fabric for boat cushions

Marine upholstery fabric is for boat owners who are looking for a boat seat cover material to protect and improve their boats’ visual appearance. It is also for those looking for boat interior upholstery ideas that don’t require frequent maintenance and cleaning. There are many factors that come into play when selecting an upholstery fabric, but this easy-to-follow upholstery fabric guide will help you in making the best decision.

Now that you have read the product reviews, the next step in finding the best marine vinyl fabric is to know the different features to consider. Here are the critical features to take note of when picking a marine upholstery fabric:

The most important consideration when choosing a boat interior upholstery fabric is the material. There are three common types of marine upholstery fabric materials: acrylic, mesh, and vinyl.

Acrylic upholstery is made of laminated fabric to add durability, making it a compatible fabric for boats. This type of fabric is waterproof and fire-resistant as well. However, its major downside is that it is not very versatile. It is also a very hard material to work with if you plan to put the upholstery DIY style.

Another popular boat upholstery fabric is mesh. Among the other options, this is the most visually appealing choice. It is made of PVC which is a water-resistant and durable material. You also get plenty of choices in terms of designs. However, it can be quite expensive compared to the other options.

Vinyl is also a common boat seat upholstery material, and I would say that it is my personal preference. This is because the vinyl fabric is an affordable choice. Unlike acrylic, it is versatile, and there is a decent number of options available for various designs.

There are two types of vinyl marine upholstery fabric that you should know about. They are:

Expanded Vinyl

Expanded vinyl, also known as polyvinyl chloride, is best used on boat seats. This material is resistant to mold and mildew, and it is not easily damaged if you wish to add antimicrobial chemicals. It is very affordable too.

Vinyl and Polyester Composite

Meanwhile, the vinyl and polyester composite is a combination of vinyl and polyester. This enables this material to hug the furniture’s frame or surface tightly, making it look more seamless and clean. Just like expanded vinyl, this is also resistant to mold and mildew.

In case you don’t know it yet, there are standard grades for fabric material. These are:

Lightweight

Lightweight fabrics are ordinary clothes that are not suitable for boats unless you plan to use them as a boat seat fabric. Even then, you are still at risk of mold and mildew problems because people might sit directly on the seats after taking a quick dip on the water.

Marine-grade

Marine-grade fabric is the most suitable type of material for both the interior and exterior of your boat. This is because these are specially designed to protect your boat from typical problems that fabrics might be subjected to when used on interior and exterior surfaces.

Commercial Grade

You can also consider using a commercial-grade sailboat upholstery fabric because it’s durable and water-resistant just like marine-grade fabric. However, their major differences are texture and thickness. Commercial grade fabrics are typically 1/8-inch thick, allowing them to have a more foam-like texture.

The grades that you should consider when choosing a marine upholstery fabric is between marine-grade and commercial grade. If you want a thicker and more bouncy fabric, the commercial-grade is a good choice even if you would only use a minimal cushion. However, if you have budget constraints, there are affordable marine-grade options available out there.

Water resistance

Remember that boats will be in the water most of the time. People coming in and out will also be more likely to get wet, so it is vital to pick a water-resistant material for boat seats.

Most marine upholstery fabric brands are upfront about the water-resistance of their product. In fact, they use it as a selling point when marketing, so it wouldn’t be too difficult to identify whether it is water-resistant or not.

However, you should also know the difference between waterproof and water-resistant labels. Waterproof means that no water will penetrate the fabric at all costs while water-resistant simply means it is resistant to water to a certain extent.

Ideally, you want to choose waterproof fabric materials because they tend to be more long-lasting, especially with a boat’s environment. If you do pick a water-resistant variant, check first how water resistant the fabric is before making a final decision.

Weatherproof

Another important feature to consider is whether the fabric for boat seats is weatherproof or not. This is very critical, especially for fabrics that will be installed on the boat’s exterior. Do not confuse weatherproof with water resistance and waterproof because it is entirely different.

This feature is focused on the fabric’s capacity to withstand varying weather conditions such as heavy rains and extreme heat. Marine upholstery fabrics are prone to discoloration and thread damage when they are not weatherproof.

best place to buy upholstery fabric

Just like anything in the world, marine upholstery fabric for boat cushions has advantages and disadvantages. For full transparency, we wouldn’t be concluding this article without presenting it to you. Here are the major advantages of using boat cushion fabric:

Advantages:

Design Aesthetics

The best fabric for boat cushions can make a boat look more luxurious. It can also help you get the type of design and style you want by playing with different fabric texture and colors. Furthermore, you can also use marine upholstery fabric to cover eyesores such as exposed speakers or minor dents and damages.

Aside from the visual benefits, marine upholstery fabric also helps protect the chairs and walls of boats. Marine vinyl upholstery fabric protects these boat parts from corrosion and deterioration caused by the ever-changing weather and other marine elements.

Lesser Maintenance

Marine upholstery fabrics are very easy to clean. All you need to do is wipe or pressure wash the surface, and it will be cleaned in a matter of seconds. Most marine upholstery fabrics are also long-lasting so you will not need to do reupholstery for a couple of years.

These types of fabric are mold and mildew resistant. You can also add antimicrobial chemicals on the fabrics without the fear of damaging them.

Disadvantages:

Difficult installation

Unless you are confident with your handyman skills, I do not suggest installing your marine upholstery fabric on your own because it can be quite complex. You need to know how to cut, glue, or sew the fabric on the intended surface and make it look good.

Although there are marine upholstery fabrics that are affordable, they are still considerably expensive, especially if you plan to cover your boat’s interior and exterior.

What is Marine Upholstery Fabric?

Marine grade upholstery fabric is specially designed to withstand the harsh environment of the open waters. It is used to cover furniture on the boat such as seats and other parts . It is also used to add style and design to elevate the visual appeal of a boat.

What is the Most Trustworthy Marine Upholstery Material?

Many will say that the best boat material upholstery is vinyl. Marine-grade vinyl is resistant to mold and mildew. It is also flexible so it can be easily installed on furniture, and it is very economical.

However, since “best” is a subjective word, you can also consider acrylic and mesh. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

How to Set Up and Use Marine Upholstery Fabric?

Setting up and using marine upholstery will require excellent sewing skills. If you have this, then good for you; however, it is best to leave the installation to the professionals if you don’t.

Upholstery companies will measure the dimension of the furniture or area where the fabric will be placed. They will then cut the fabric and tailor it according to the measured specification. After that, tailors will install cushions underneath to give the surface a soft and more luxurious feel before covering it with fabric.

Don’t worry about the cushions on the boat seat material getting wet because marine grade fabrics are usually waterproof.

How to Care and Clean Marine Upholstery Fabric?

Depending on the type of boat interior fabric that you choose, the care and cleaning processes might differ. If you are using vinyl marine fabric for boats, you can simply wipe it from time to time to prevent dirt and grime accumulation.

If you notice discoloration, you can use marine vinyl cleaners. These types of cleaners are also designed to add a layer of protection to the vinyl fabric.

However, it is important to avoid using any type of cleaners that contains bleach. This will thin and discolor your fabric. Furthermore, avoid using abrasive brushes and towels when wiping the fabric surface.

Which is Better: Waterproof or Water-Resistant Marine Upholstery Fabric?

When choosing your marine upholstery material, it is important to know whether it is waterproof or water-resistant since these are different classifications.

When the fabric claims that it is waterproof, it means that it does not allow any fluid to pass through. Meanwhile, when it is labeled as water-resistant, it means that it is designed to not easily be penetrated by water.

Obviously, water-resistant fabrics will not make the cut as a marine upholstery fabric because boats are exposed to water constantly, so you should only choose among fabrics labeled as waterproof.

Can I do DIY Boat Upholstery?

Yes, you can perform a do it yourself marine upholstery project since no rule says otherwise. However, you need to be extra careful when cutting the fabric and putting it on the boat furniture or surfaces to avoid unpleasant visual outcomes.

If you are planning to DIY your boat’s upholstery, make sure that you have all the marine upholstery supplies necessary such as super glue, scissors, and cushions. If you have a sewing machine at home, sewing the fabric will give it a cleaner and more elegant look.

Where to Buy Marine Upholstery Fabric?

The best place to buy upholstery fabric is in fabric stores, general shops, hardware stores, or online. It is a fairly accessible material, so it wouldn’t be difficult to source.

However, if you want convenience and good deals, I recommend buying it online from trusted retailers. They offer promos and discounts, unlike in brick and mortar stores. Brands such as Sunbrella Marine Fabric, AquaGuard Fabric, and Bry-tech Marine Fabric are available online. However, the downside is that you need to wait for it to be delivered to you.

If there is a wholesale; near me for marine upholstery fabric, then that is also an excellent place to buy the material. You are sure to get big discounts, especially when you buy in bulk.

The products mentioned in the review can fit various needs and specifications while still considering the important features. Hopefully, you find this article helpful in your quest to find the best marine upholstery fabric.

Regardless of what fabric you choose, as long as it is made of a durable material with the right type of grade and water resistance levels and weatherproofing, you are making an excellent choice.

Guide to Boat Upholstery Renovation

  • By Jim Hendricks
  • December 17, 2021

1977 Witchcraft runabout

Re-upholstering a boat exceeds the skill level of most DIY boaters. For this kind of project, most of us need the help of a qualified marine upholstery shop. This is especially true for a project that encompasses the total replacement of the upholstery, a task that includes the engineering and fabrication of the upholstery framework, as well as design and crafting of the fabric coverings.

Such was the case as we entered the final phase of a complete restoration of a 1977 outboard-powered 17-foot Witchcraft runabout, a project that started with gutting the interior, including the original, but now rotted, seating, side and transom panels, and other upholstery parts. For guidance on how to proceed with replacing the upholstery, we turned to Sunbrella Horizon, which offers a broad line marine vinyl upholstery fabrics. Bill McDaniel, marine market manager for Sunbrella Horizon, offered these tips.

Panel removed from boat

Quality Shop

As mention before, you’ll need assistance from a marine upholstery shop. But how do you find one?  “A good place to start in identifying a marine upholstery fabricator is to ask local boating organizations or your marina to provide recommended partners,” McDaniel says. “Another option is to check in with the boat manufacturer or dealer.” While these sources may not always be able to do the work themselves, they can likely point you in the direction of a trusted partner shop or local fabricator.

“Also, don’t forget online resources including social media and review websites such as Yelp where you can find testimonials and past experiences from other customers,” McDaniel adds. In our case, we chose SoCal Upholstery in Montclair, California. While the shop was about 40 miles away, it came highly recommended by a number of boat dealers, as well as local boat builders, for quality design and fabrication.

Key Questions

Before work starts on your boat upholstery project, it’s important to ask the right questions to be sure the fabricator understands your goals and you know exactly what you to expect, McDaniel points out. He suggests start with questions such as:

  • Can you walk me through your fabrication process?
  • Are you able to assist with design?
  • How long do you estimate it will take to complete the work?
  • Have you worked on this type of craft before?
  • What type of information is most helpful for me to provide throughout the process?
  • Do you provide any type of warranty on the work?

Following the discussion, request a written or documented estimate and ask questions about what is included in the quote and what factors could affect it before you sign off on the project, McDaniel says.

Boat gutted

Framework: Re-use or Replace?

Whether or not the existing upholstery framework can be used will depend primarily on the reason for re-upholstery and the overall state of the boat. “It also may depend on which part of the boat you are updating,” McDaniel explains. “In many cases, it’s possible to apply new marine fabrics on an existing frame; however, you will want to be sure there is no damage or underlying issues.”

It’s important to have the framework inspected by an expert, so be sure to bring this up with your fabricator. Just like a home or building, having the right foundation is essential for long-term use and enjoyment. In our case, we decide that the old wood frame work was 45 years old and rotting, so we decided have the shop build all new frames.

New plywood seats

Frame Material

The material used for upholstery framework will depend on the type of boat, the craft’s age, the original materials, and your fabricator’s preferences. Framing the structure for a captain’s chair or helm chair is a different application than framing for main seating areas, such as the bow area. Typically, specialty woods like mahogany or teak are used for captain’s or helm chair structures. “Be sure to discuss your options with your fabricator partner before starting the project,” McDaniel advises. In our case, we chose plywood, which was coated with resin after construction to prevent water damage in the future.

Staple Supply

“Quality staples play an important part in marine upholstery work, alongside a strong framing material, quality fabric, the right foam cushioning and durable thread and adhesives,” McDaniel points out. In our case, we asked the fabricator to use stainless-steel staples to help prevent corrosion.

Foam glued down

Colors and Design

Most fabricator include the design and color selection as part of their prices. “To make sure you’re happy with the outcome, it’s important to brief your shop about the goals of your project and the desired look for your boat,” McDaniel says. “Inspirational photos are especially helpful in providing a starting point.” Don’t forget to share the ideal look and feel for your boat seating along with examples of how you commonly use your boat, such as fishing or entertaining.

You will also want to discuss your goals for the entire look of the boat and where you want coordinating materials to be used, McDaniel adds. “For example, Sunbrella offers most marine fabric in matching colorways, meaning it’s easy to coordinate new upholstery fabric with existing fabric you plan to keep or other fabric on the boat, such as a Bimini top,” he points out. Using your input as well as the background on your boat and their expertise, your fabricator will be able to make smart fabric recommendations. From there you can work together to fine-tune the design before work begins, as we did with our restoration project.

Upholstery installed

Fabric Brand

Should you specify the marine vinyl fabric brand or trust the fabricator to select it? “You and your fabricator should work together to select the right fabrics for your boat,” says McDaniel. “Like any good partnership, it’s a team effort. We always advise boaters to lean on their fabricators for recommendations but also ask questions and explore options before making a purchase decision.

“Fabricators take great pride in their work and the process should be fun,” he adds. “Treat them as a partner, get involved and you’ll get great counsel and see great results.”

Fabric Quality

When considering a marine upholstery vinyl fabric, boaters should think about quality, longevity, design and support, according to McDaniel. “Investing in a high-quality fabric will give you the peace of mind to enjoy your boat upholstery without worrying about harsh marine conditions or potential damages or spills,” he explains. The investment upfront means longer lasting boat seating, and limiting the need for costly replacements that might put your boat out of commission for long stretches of time.”

McDaniel also points out the need to care for and maintain any marine upholstery. “Make sure the fabric you select comes with support after purchase, including care and cleaning resources and comprehensive warranties,” he says. “Sunbrella fabrics are the most trusted and preferred choice and are backed by the most comprehensive warranties in the industry.

“For example, Sunbrella Horizon marine vinyl is backed by a five-year warranty that covers replacement fabric and labor costs, along with a three-year warranty against bacterial pink staining.”

Newly upholstered seat

Marine Foam

When it comes to upholstery foam, good fabricators typically have a few types of foam on hand in a variety of densities to be sure they’re using the best material for the job, McDaniel says. These foams include polyurethane, Dryfast and closed cell foams. “Foam is an important element for seating, providing support and flexibility allowing for all-day comfort,” he explains. “Ask your fabricator about the foam type and density they recommend for your boat and why.”

Thread Choices

Polyester, nylon and monofilament threads each have unique benefits that could make them the right fit for your craft, and good fabricators know which to use, as well as where and when. “Like fabric, thread serves a functional and stylistic role,” McDaniel reveals. “Talk to your fabricator about contrasting thread colors, piping styles and patterns they can sew into your seating for an even more custom look.”

Ultimately, re-upholstery isn’t something you’ll likely do often, and the process does take time, McDaniel points out. “It’s important to start the conversation with your fabricator and plan for the upgrades and an ideal time for work to begin, as you’ll be without your boat,” he adds.

Taking the renovated boat out

Right Attitude

“View the improvements on your boat as an investment rather than an expense, and select quality materials and crafts people to work on your boat,” McDaniel says. “This is an exciting upgrade for years of comfort and memories and taking good care of your boat now will ensure it takes good care of you and your passengers.”

  • Fabric composition - what a marine upholstery fabric is made of determines how well it stands up to heat, water, UV sunlight, sun lotion and regular wear and tear. Most exterior marine upholstery fabric is composed of PVC (faux leather vinyl fabric). For boat covers and tops, popular brands such as Sunbrella have developed high tech manufacturing methods to ensure that their marine-grade canvas fabric maintains it's rich color and remains durable in a wet and sun drenched environment.
  • Fabric Weight/Density - the tighter the weave of a fabric, the better it will be at resisting the elements and standing up to wear and tear. Marine canvas fabric is much heavier and considerably more dense than typical fabric used for interior decor and marine upholstery vinyl fabric has the weight of heavy upholstery material but is many times more durable and is water-resistant and UV resistant.
  • Light Fastness - “light fastness” is a specification that describes how resistant a fabric is to fading. Marine fabrics are subject to consistent UV sunlight, they are produced to have a high light fastness rating.
  • Resistance to Water Damage (Mildew and Mold) - the largest challenge to a marine exterior fabric is to retain it's color and strength of construction while being regularly exposed to moisture. Marine fabric is designed to be resistant to mildew and mold.
  • Marine Vinyl Upholstery Fabric - this type of marine seating upholstery needs to be both UV and water resistant. It is available in many different colors, grains and styles including pleated. For exterior seat cushions, there is no better choice than a quality marine vinyl upholstery fabric such as those offered by Naugahyde, Omnova and Morbern.
  • Boat Canvas - for waterproof covers and bimini tops for boats. At DecorativeFabricsDirect.com you are able to select from Sunbrella Marine Canvas, the very best that the industry has to offer. Even the harshest marine environments are no match for Sunbrella boat top and cover marine canvas fabric. That's because its rich color is an integral part of the fiber and can't be washed away or bleached out by the sun, rain or chlorine. Rest assured your boat canvas cover, boat top fabric and bimini top fabric will look fabulous nautical mile after mile.Because our boat canvas fabric is woven for breathability, it doesn't trap heat and moisture, eliminating mildew. As a result, Sunbrella marine canvas fabric stays fresh and beautiful season after season. In addition to longevity and durability, Sunbrella boat fabric also provides protection from the sun so you can enjoy long hours on the water. Sunbrella Marine fabrics carry the Skin Cancer Foundation's Seal of Recommendation, giving your family and friends the extra assurance they need.
  • Marine Seat Underlining - marine underlining is a porous piece of mildew resistant vinyl coated fabric under the seat bottom. It's purpose is to allow water collected in a cushion to escape. It is applied to the bottom of a cushion and the fact that it is porous helps to resist mildew and mold growth.
  • Sunbrella Marine Upholstery Fabric - shop Sunbrella Marine upholstery fabric for boat interior upholstery. This fabric is suitable for curtain, bed covering and upholstery that is not subjected to the elements.
  • Sunbrella - Sunbrella Marine is the most popular marine canvas fabric available. It is a resilient fabric, highly resistant to mold growth and fading and is available in a large selection of colors.
  • Omnova - Omnova is a well respected coated fabric manufacturer that specializes in durable PVC coated fabrics. Their faux leather marine fabrics are utilized in a wide range interior and exterior boat cushion upholstery.
  • Morbern - Morbern is a Canada-based manufacturer of PVC coated upholstery fabrics and is an industry leader in the production of marine grade vinyl upholstery fabric in a large selection of colors and grains.
  • Naugahyde - Naugahyde is one of the most popular and recognized brands of PVC coated fabric. Shop Decorative Fabrics Direct for distributor wholesale prices on an extensive selection of marine vinyl fabric by the yard.

Abrasion Rating

Product specification - abrasion rating.

A double rub rating is not applicable to a fabric used for bedding, curtain, drapery or other applications where the fabric is not subjected to abrasion. A double rub rating applicable to fabric used for upholstery is obtained from an industry test that measures fabric resistance to typical abrasion that is expected from the use of upholstered furniture.

General Guidelines for Residential Upholstered Furniture:

Under 5000 Double Rub Rating or code "LD" is suitable for home decor light duty upholstery use (not daily use, more for decorative appeal). 5000 - 14900 Double Rub Rating or code "MD" is suitable for medium use home decor upholstery applications such as living rooms. 15000 - 29900 Double Rub Rating or code "RD" is suitable for everyday regular and heavy use home decor upholstery applications. 30000 and Above Double Rub Rating or code "HD" is suitable for residential and commercial upholstery subjected to "extreme use". Code "LDO" indicates a selection of fabric that is only recommended for 'light duty outdoor' upholstery applications where cushions do not receive regular use and can be easily removed and stored away from harmful UV light when not in use. These selections are not intended for normal indoor furniture upholstery as they are not constructed to withstand the abrasion of regular use. If you are in need of a more durable outdoor fabric that can also be used for indoor upholstery, we recommend a High Performance Indoor-Outdoor Fabric from Sunbrella, Bella-Dura and Covington.

General Guidelines for Commercial Upholstered Furniture:

The surface wear of a fabric caused by rubbing and contact with another fabric. Association For Contract Textiles "ACT" GUIDELINES General Contract Upholstery ASTM D4157-02 (ACT approved #10 Cotton Duck) 15,000 double rubs Wyzenbeek method ASTM D4966-98 (12 KPa pressure) 20,000 cycles Martindale method Heavy Duty ASTM D4157-02 (ACT approved #10 Cotton Duck) 30,000 double rubs Wyzenbeek method ASTM D4966-98 (12 KPa pressure) 40,000 cycles Martindale method End use examples of heavy-duty installations where upholstery fabrics rated at 30,000 double rubs should be appropriate are single shift corporate, hotel rooms/suites, conference rooms and dining area usage.

The Wyzenbeek and Martindale tests are the two methods commonly used to predict wear-ability. Actual performance is determined by many factors such as fiber content, weaves, finishes, furniture design, maintenance, cleaning, and usage. Durability of an upholstery fabric is a complex interaction (combination) of a number of performance tests that, in addition to abrasion, includes seam slippage, pilling, tensile strength, and usage. There is no correlation between the Wyzenbeek and Martindale tests so it is not possible to estimate the number of cycles that would be achieved on one test if the results from the other test were known.

TEST METHODS ASTM D4157-02 Oscillatory Cylinder (Wyzenbeek) The ASTM D4157-02 is a test of the American Society of Testing and Materials. A Wyzenbeek machine is used for this test allowing samples of the test fabric to be pulled tight in a frame and held stationary. Individual test specimens cut from the warp and weft direction are then rubbed back and forth using an ACT approved #10 cotton duck fabric* as the abradant. The number of double rub cycles achieved before two yarn breaks occur or noticeable wear is observed is recorded as the fabrics abrasion rating.

The wire screen abradant is recommended by ACT for use with vinyl and polyurethane coated upholstery and may also be used for testing 100% olefin fabrics.

ASTM D4966-98 Martindale The ASTM D4966-98 is a test method of the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM). This is an oscillating test. Fabric samples are mounted flat and rubbed in a figure eight like motion using a piece of worsted wool cloth as the abradant. The number of cycles that the fabric can endure before fabric shows objectionable change in appearance (yarn breaks, pilling, holes) is counted. Number of cycles determines abrasion rating.

Cleaning Instructions

DC - DRY CLEAN ONLY MS - MACHINE WASHABLE ON GENTLE CYCLE OP - OUTDOOR PERFORMANCE (for most High Performance Indoor/Outdoor Fabrics, other than Bella Dura Home) - Remove as much loose dirt as possible. A mild detergent mixed with lukewarm water should be tried first to clean the fabric. For more stubborn stains, bleached can be used as follows: Prepare a solution of one cup of bleach and one fourth cup of mild soap per gallon of cold to lukewarm water. Spray the solution on entire area to be cleaned and allow 15 minutes to soak into the fabric. Clean the entire surface area with a sponge, clean towel or very soft bristle brush to avoid abrading the fabric. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue, then air dry. For severe cases of mold/mildew growth, bleach quantities may be increased. It is best to clean the entire surface area of the fabric to avoid water rings and stains. OP - OUTDOOR PERFORMANCE (for Bella Dura Home Fabrics) - Cleanup involves a mild soap mixed 1 part soap to 10 parts water and a soft brush. When necessary, and for stubborn stains, Bella Dura Home fabrics are bleach cleanable with a 1 part bleach to 4 parts water mixture. Remember to always rinse with clear water to remove all residue. Remaining residue attracts dirt, so if proper rinsing has not occurred, fabrics will get soiled again much more quickly. Also, never dry clean, use an iron or steam this product. Allow this product to air dry. R - This fabric can be cleaned with almost any household cleaner -- even pure bleach will not damage this fabric! Most stains can be blotted and cleaned with just water, but we recommend mixing some bleach in the solution to kill any bacteria that may grow. Whatever cleaning product you use, it is important to thoroughly rinse the fabric with clean water and allow the fabric to air dry. Fabrics with a R cleaning code are manufactured for upholstery use and have a fabric back coating for extra strength. Therefore, do not machine wash as this could damage the backing. RP - This multi-purpose fabric is suitable for slipcover applications and has no fabric back coating. Fabrics that are designated with a RP cleaning code are machine washable. This fabric is not only soft and beautiful, but also durable, inherently stain resistant, and bleach cleanable...even dark colors. This fabric should be washed on a delicate cycle with cold water accompanied with laundry detergent and bleach, if necessary. After the wash is complete, dry your fabric on LOW heat for no more than 10 minutes. Exposure to high temperatures will damage olefin. Also, do not iron. For tougher stains pretreat soiled area with a bleach and water mixture. S - SOLVENT CLEANER - Spot clean with a mild water-free solvent or dry cleaning product. Clean only in a well ventilated room and avoid any product that contains carbon tetrachloride or other toxic materials. Pretest a small area before proceeding. W - WATER BASED CLEANER - Spot clean using the foam from a water-based cleaning agent such as a mild detergent or non solvent upholstery shampoo product. Apply foam with a soft brush in a circular motion. Vacuum when dry. Pretest a small area before proceeding. WS - WATER-SOLVENT CLEANER - Spot clean with a mild solvent, an upholstery shampoo, or the foam from a mild detergent. When using a solvent or dry cleaning product, follow instructions carefully and clean only in a well ventilated room. Avoid any product that contains carbon tetrachloride or other toxic materials. Pretest a small area before proceeding. X - VACUUM ONLY - Clean this fabric only by vacuuming or light brushing to prevent accumulation of dust and grime. Water-based foam cleaners or solvent-based cleaning agents of any kind may cause excessive shrinking, staining or distortion of the surface, and therefore should not be used. These recommendations and codes were developed by fabric specialists. However, because of the various ways that fabric can be stained or damaged, there is no guarantee that the results will be completely successful. These suggestions are provided as a service only. To help prevent overall soil, frequent vacuuming or light brushing to remove dust and grime is recommended. Use a professional furniture cleaning service when an overall soiled condition has been reached.

Flammability Safety Rating

The measurement of a fabric's performance when it is exposed to specific sources of ignition. Note: Association For Contract Textiles "ACT" guidelines specify different flammability tests dictated by the intended end use for the fabric. ACT GUIDELINES: Upholstery California Technical Bulletin #117 Section E – Class 1 (Pass) Direct Glue Wallcoverings ASTM E 84-03 (Adhered Mounting Method) – Class A or Class 1 Wrapped Panels and Upholstered Walls ASTM E 84-03 (Unadhered Mounting Method) – Class A or Class 1 Drapery NFPA 701-89 (Small Scale)* – Pass*NFPA 701-99 Test #1 is being phased in at this time, but is not yet cited in all relevant codes. Therefore, the small-scale test remains the ACT standard until further notice. NFPA 701-99 (Small Scale) California TB #117 Section E California Technical Bulletin #117 Section E* – Class 1 (Pass) The California TB #117 Section E is a test method of the California Bureau of Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation. It is a vertical flame test measuring the ease of ignition and the burning rate when a small open flame hits the surface of the test fabric for 1 second. A Class 1 (Pass) rating is assigned if: 1. A 5.0" section of the fabric is consumed in 3.5 or more seconds (less than 3.5 seconds is a failure). For raised surface fabric, the minimum burn time is increased to 4.0 seconds. 2. The fabric does not ignite. ASTM E 84-03 Tunnel Test The ASTM E-84 test is a test method of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Commonly called the Tunnel Test, this test can be performed under two different methods adhered or non adhered where the only difference is in specimen preparation: Adhered: The fabric is bonded to either a CA board substitute or gypsum board. This is the prescribed method for wall coverings whose actual use will be adhered . Non adhered: If the fabric is a panel fabric or upholstered walls, it is tested in a frame without being bonded to any other material. In each instance (adhered and non adhered), the fabric is placed in the ceiling of the test tunnel and subjected at one end to a high intensity flame which spreads over the first 4.5 feet of the 24 foot test specimen. The distance of flame front progression and total burning time are used to calculate a flame spread index . Smoke monitors are used to calculate a smoke developed value. The flame spread index and smoke developed value are calculated from the results of the test fabric compared to the characteristics of cement board and red oak materials resulting in the indexes. Typically, the code classes are as follows: Class A: Flame Spread Index of 25 or less and Smoke Developed value of 450 or less Class B: Flame Spread Index of 26 to 75 and Smoke Developed value of 450 or less Class C: Flame Spread Index of 76 to 200 and Smoke Developed value of 450 or less Caution: The ASTM E 84 test is only valid if the textile or vinyl wall covering is used in a sprinklered occupancy. If not, the Room Corner Test (NFPA 265 for textiles; and NFPA 286 for vinyl) is mandated in many jurisdictions. NFPA 701-89 (Small Scale) The NFPA 701-89 (Small Scale) is a test method of the National Fire Protection Agency. It measures the ignition resistance of a fabric after it is exposed to a flame for 12 seconds. The flame, char length and flaming residue are recorded. The fabric will pass the test if all samples meet the following criteria (if one sample fails the fabric fails): 1) An after flame of less then 2.0 seconds 2) An average char length of less than 6.5" or an individual specimen of 7.5". 3) The specimen does not continue to flame after reaching the floor of the test chamber < Note: NFPA 701-99 Test #1 is being phased in at this time, but is not yet cited in all relevant codes. Therefore, the small-scale test remains the ACT standard until further notice

Colorfastness to Light is a material's degree of resistance to the fading effect of light. Association For Contract Textiles "ACT" GUIDELINES Upholstery: AATCC 16 Option 1 or 3-2003 Grade 4 minimum at 40 hours. Wrapped Panels and Upholstered Walls: AATCC 16 Option 1 or 3-2003 Grade 4 minimum at 40 hours. Drapery: AATCC 16 Option 1 or 3-2003 Grade 4 minimum at 60 hours. TEST METHOD: AATCC 16 Option 1 or 3 – 2003* The AATCC 16 Option 1 and 3 are test methods of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC). ACT recognizes both methods where the only difference is the light source being used. In AATCC 16 Option 1 a Carbon-Arc lamp is used as the light source and in AATCC 16 Option 3 a Xenon-Arc lamp is used. Under both methods a strip of fabric (part of which is protected by a special paper card) is placed in a fadometer and exposed to 40 hours of accelerated fading units (AFU). After the exposure the difference in color between the exposed and protected parts of the fabric are compared to the AATCC gray scale and the degree of fading is rated. Grade 5 = no fading Grade 4 = slight fading Grade 1 = high degree of fading

WHY ARE SAMPLES TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE?

We apologize, but for the next few weeks we will be unable to offer samples as we normally do, day in and day out. Unprecedented demand for samples has created a two week backlog for us to fill and we do not want to inconvenience any customers with new sample orders by this long of a delivery. We are shipping FABRIC orders, but at this time we must temporarily pause taking any new SAMPLE orders until we get back to our normal 2 to 3 day shipment policy. We anticipate we will be back on our regular delivery by the 22nd of this month and will accept sample orders again at that time. We do know that in some cases there are emergency and deadline situations, and we ask that you call our customer service department (888-633-2658) to advise us of such. We sincerely apologize, but felt being up front was the best way to handle the situation considering you, our valued customer.

California Proposition 65

California's Proposition 65 entitles California consumers to special warnings for products that contain chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm if those products expose consumers to such chemicals above certain threshold levels. When a manufacturer informs us that this warning is applicable to their product we will indicate such among the specifications on a specific item page. The general Proposition 65 notice is as follows: WARNING: This product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Railroad Design

What is a railroaded fabric.

Railroaded fabrics are simply fabrics that have designs turned "sideways" on the roll. The process was developed to aid furniture manufacturers wishing to cut and sew covers on furniture without seams. Since most fabrics woven are approximately 54" wide, any furniture piece wider than 54" would require seaming two pieces of fabric together. Railroading solves this dilemma, now a cushion piece can be covered without seams no matter what the width. Railroaded fabric is very desirable by designers since they can be more creative. When using a railroaded product for drapery, be aware of the panel size in relation to the design.

Special Order Terms

We have entered into agreements with several of our suppliers allowing us to special order items for our customers directly from the mill when we otherwise do not stock or have a very low "in-stock" quantity at our Atlanta distribution center. Special order availability will be indicated on the item if it is applicable. The shipping date of a Special Order is most often within 2-10 business days, please look on the specific item page as the expected shipping time is noted. Special Orders may be subject to a minimum quantity purchase and if so the minimum will also be indicated on the specific item page. It is very important to have seen a sample as special orders are non-cancellable and not returnable to the mill. To place an order for special order items please select the option to order yardage (or roll for wallpaper), enter the quantity needed for your project in the quantity box and click the add to cart button.

Wallpaper Installation & Care Guidelines

Measure the wall height and pre-cut strips to match the wall height, allow an extra 1-2 inches for trimming both the top and bottom. Make sure to align any design from strip to strip. This means "STRAIGHT MATCH" designs are matched at the same height. It is where the left and right edges of the wallpaper strip match in a straight horizontal line with the left and right edges of the next strip of wallpaper "HALF DROP" designs repeat across the roll half way down the vertical repeat and must be taken into consideration when each strip is cut. Do not cut "HALF DROP" design strips like you would "STRAIGHT MATCH" or your strips will line up incorrectly. Cut and trim product with a sharp razor knife changing the blade often to help maintain a smooth clean cut. Number the back of each strip as you go to keep your design in the correct order (only if pattern requires it).

Starting on the left side of your wall, measure out from the corner 20.5" (52.1 cm) and mark the wall lightly with a pencil. Put your level on this mark and draw a straight, level, vertical line. This is the guide for your first strip, it is important that it is straight.

Peel about 12" (30.5 cm) of the backing away from the paper. Apply the paper to the top of the wall, allowing 1-2 extra inches to overlap the ceiling which will be trimmed off later. Align the right side of the strip with your vertical line to your mark and lightly press the edge to the wall along the line. If needed, you can reposition to ensure a vertical seam. Working from top to bottom, pull the backing away from the paper as you evenly press the paper to the wall. Do not force the paper and be careful not to pull or stretch the product or the pattern will not align. For best results, we recommend having one person guide the paper at the top and along the seam, while the other holds the opposite edge away from the wall until the seams are aligned.

Using a plastic smoother, make your way down the strip in a back-and-forth motion, smoothing the material to the wall and pushing out any air bubbles.

Trim off the excess material at the ceiling and baseboard with a ruler and sharp razor knife.

Wallpaper Ordering Guidelines

Wallpaper rolls are generally considered to be between only 85 and 95 percent usable due to patterns that need to be matched and the scraps generated in doing so. The smaller the pattern, the less extra wallpaper that will be needed. Your first step would be to measure the room that you intend to decorate. Measure both the length of a wall in feet and the height of the wall in feet. Multiply the width by the height. This will give you the square footage of that wall. Do this for all walls in the room and add up those measurements to get the total wall square footage of that room. We suggest to not subtract for windows and doors as this is not necessary. Why? When wallpaper is installed, it has to be trimmed around the doors and windows. In doing so, this could require just as much wallpaper as a solid wall. Now that you have the total square footage, don't forget to allow for extra and we suggest 10-15%, due to matching and scraps being created in the installation process. You can determine the number of rolls needed by dividing your total by 30.75, which is the square footage in each of our Surface Style Collection wallpapers. If you calculate and get a fraction, remember to round up to be safe. We hope these guidelines are helpful and please remember these are general guidelines.

Interior Wall Materials

Hi all, I'm looking to renovate a steel-hulled motor yacht (26'x110') with 6 guest rooms. The exterior walls are steel, with the interior seemingly plywood, with fiberglass insulation used in between. The design of the boat is good, but the interior spaces & rooms may need significant work (think: mold/mildew in the walls, poor insulation). Photo attached of one of the rooms. I'm curious what some of you experts would recommend in terms of materials to use on a boat like this, especially walls/ceilings/floors. It seems options include: - Walls/ceiling: Vinyl covered marine plywood, Painted underlayment-grade lauan plywood, others? - Flooring: Wood or laminate flooring (same as in a house), carpet - Others? The boat will be in a cold weather climate, so I'm also wondering if the spray-foam polymer insulation that has become popular in home construction is viable on the inner surface of the exterior steel walls (especially considering condensation in the winter). Thanks in advance for any thoughts, Rocco

I think that it depends largely on the budget and the owner's expectations. You can wallpaper and trim and have a nice finish. Spray foam may work, but that would mean stripping the whole interior.

Rocco Nice boat So long as you use any suitable marine plywood or marine specific material, you should be ok. Some, of course, are better than others...which depends upon the size of your budget. If you're in a cold weather climate, ensure you have plenty of ventilation, and use solid insulation material. Use something like Rockwool or Firemaster with a min rating of around 40~50kg/m^3 and around 100mm thick. That should provide you with plenty of good insulation. An air gap helps too, which helps to also collect any condensation in "run-offs" too. So, depends upon your cost, and time frame for build.

The boats I work with use spray foam. 100mm would be nice but not always possible. Do research on foams..all foams are not suitable for marine applications. Do careful planning before you foam. Assemble all cabinetry , then disassemble and foam. Dont bury plumbing or cable runs under the foam. Dont use spray foam in areas that may get wet. Use closed cell sheet foam or other insulation. . mask off any areas in which mechanical fasteners will be needed or future access will be needed.. Plywood is used for interior work. Foam core plywood is expensive but needs much less frame work, stiffening and is worthwhile for many applications.

Thanks for the responses, gents! Helpful indeed. Any thoughts on how to learn about this topic? i.e. how to design and do this sort of work? I sure wish there was some sort of apprenticeship program one could get into.

Depending on where you are in the States, you might be able to sign onto a refit job like you describe thats underway. Plenty going on here in South Florida. On a 110' yacht an interior designer can be of value regarding methods and materials. Also, blind fasteners and velcro are very common for attaching finish panels to interior walls that can be removed to access cable and plumbing. As well as the already made comments, is the vessel being refit to any class? That may dictate some of the materials you could (or could not) use. There are also partition wall "systems" like wisper wall you may want to look at, if for no other reason to get some ideas. If privacy is important then what level of noise control would you be looking for?

One thing to remember when in condensation prone areas of the world is that you want every surface smooth and able to be cleaned down to a microscopic level. This means no carpet, no vinyl over something else, no places for mold to grow. Don't think layers, unless the layer is varnish or paint.

Keysdisease: Thanks, those are helpful leading questions and advice. Noise wouldn't be a major issue. Catbuilder: Good to know, thank you. michael pierzga: Good to hear that advice. Most of the systems and infrastructure is already in place, so am mainly looking at refurnishing or replacing interior work. The boat is old (i.e. 1940), so it apparently falls into some unique category with the Coast Guard ("super yacht" was what I was told).
The interior of a yacht rests on the " floor" or cabin sole Put careful thought and detail into the floor before constructing the interior. Noise, movement, rigidity , access...... Headliners are another important detail. Devote considerable thought to headliner, ceiling installation

It is more a matter of what not to use. Over the years I have found these on boats don't use them: Drywall Styrofoam Acoustic ceiling tiles Non-marine plywood, except in cabinetry Most types of foam Home electrical wire or panels I also am very careful from a fire point of few. Before considering any materials I put a blowtorch to it and see if it catches on fire. I almost burn down a boat because of a little piece of Styrofoam that a spark fell on it. Then you have mold growth, condensation and ventilation, never an easy problem. Build the interior leaving gaps between interior and exterior. You can fill these with foam but remember in the future you might want to get in there for inspection and maintenance, the foam will just get in the way. I would treat and paint hull, leave it like that. Just keep your interior away from exterior. You have a big enough boat that losing 6 inches on the sides is not going to kill you. Let it breath. Ventilate your bilges, take the colder air out of there, move the air from top of interior. The first thing I would do is open a big hatch in the middle of the boat (or somewhere easy for moving stuff around ). It needs to be at least 4' x 4'. Remember you are going to be moving a lot of stuff in and out. Best if you can move prebuilt pieces in and out, or at least sheets of plywood in and out. Also remember, some of those walls are bulkheads, do not remove these. They are there for a purpose.
