Why joining a Yacht Club is a great idea
How to find your perfect yacht club.
You may have been a member of several yacht clubs over the years and know the ins and outs of yacht club membership well.
Or, you may be new to sailing and debating the benefits of joining a yacht club – and whether doing so will be worth your while at all.
Life is busy, and joining a yacht club with a jam-packed calendar of races, training programmes and social events might seem like just another demand on your precious free time.
Joining a Yacht Club Offers Many Benefits
Yet, there are so many benefits to joining a yacht club. Apart from getting to spend time outdoors on the water with other sailing enthusiasts, there is so much to gain from becoming an active member of your local sailing community.
You will have someplace to go where you can indulge your passion for sailing to your heart’s content. There will be lots of sailing-related activities and events for you and your family to take part in every year.
What’s more, you will get to know other like-minded folks who share your passion for sailing – many of whom will become your “sailing family” for years to come.
Read on for more information about the many advantages of joining a yacht club and becoming a member of your local sailing community .
WHAT DO YOU GET WITH A YACHT CLUB MEMBERSHIP?
Well, that depends on the yacht club you choose to join.
Much like people, every yacht club has its own unique “personality”. Some will be laid-back, casual and informal, whereas others might be more formal, with decades of heritage and proud traditions.
To put it simply, a yacht club is usually the epicentre of a local sailing community. Anywhere there is water, yacht owners and sailing enthusiasts, you are sure to find a yacht club in the area.
Most yacht clubs cater to people who own a yacht, have owned a yacht, or plan on owning one soon. Yacht club membership also often relies on you knowing someone who is already a member at the club you would like to join.
You'll be able to learn more about any specific yacht club by doing some online research, as well as making contact with the club you are considering. Ask the club for information about its history, rules, membership requirements and any other pertinent information you may require before making up your mind about joining – or not.
How To Join A Yacht Club
If there is a specific yacht club in your area that you would like to join, start by examining the club’s membership requirements. These requirements will usually be stipulated clearly on the yacht club’s website, along with all the necessary steps to become a member, with all costs and fees laid out.
Annual membership fees usually apply. Being a paid-up member of a yacht club will give you access to the facilities, social events and enable you to enter sailing races, cruises, training programmes and other activities on the club’s events calendar.
THE BENEFITS OF JOINING A YACHT CLUB
- Fun, year-round sailing activities and events
You will never have to wonder what to do with your boat on the weekend again. From races and cruises to training programmes to holiday parties and events, there’s always bound to be something fun going on for you or your children to join.
Regardless of the time of year, your yacht club is likely to have a packed calendar of fun, sailing-related events for the entire family.
- A safe place to keep your yacht
If your property does not have a boat dock, you will need someplace to store and from where to launch your boat.
Yacht clubs provide a safe place to keep your boat, either via dry storage or in a boat slip. If your yacht club is in a prime location, it will also be a great place from which to set out on your yachting adventures.
- The chance to race for your yacht club
When you are a member of a yacht club, you will have the opportunity of taking part in races for your club, and represent it on your boat.
- Junior programmes to train and entertain little ones
Many yacht clubs have programmes to train children of members in various aspects of sailing. They also often offer activities and programmes to keep little ones entertained while their parents are enjoying other sailing activities and events at the club.
- Access to great amenities
Many yacht clubs boast exceptional restaurants and bars that are only for members to enjoy. Some yacht clubs even have tennis courts and high-end gyms with swimming pools and personal trainers.
- Reciprocity
The majority of yacht clubs will allow members to dock in other yacht clubs and marinas around the country – or even elsewhere around the world.
This reciprocity benefit will give you the same access to other yacht clubs’ marinas and their facilities that you would enjoy at your club. This system is excellent if you plan on travelling around your home country – or the globe – by yacht. You’ll always have a "home" in every port.
Some yacht clubs even extend their membership privileges to golf resorts and other services.
- Make friends for life
When you join a yacht club, you will connect with new friends who share your passion for all things sailing. Through cruising together and enjoying the many social engagements at their yacht club, many members form life-long friendships, as do their children!
FINDING THE RIGHT YACHT CLUB FOR YOU
As you can see, the benefits of joining a yacht club are manifold. Much more than only offering you a place to keep your boat, it will open up a whole new way of life centred around sailing, with lots of social events and opportunities to spend time with others who share your passion for sailing.
However, yacht clubs can vary quite a bit in character and levels of formality, and it is essential to find a yacht club where you can be yourself and feel at home.
What qualities are you looking for in a yacht club?
Take your time, ask around and do some research before deciding on a yacht club to join.
Ask yourself what made you choose sailing as a pastime initially. What do you value and enjoy most about sailing? Are you a stickler for traditions and formality, or are you a more casual, laid-back sailing enthusiast?
Once you know the answers to these questions, you’ll know when you come across the yacht club that is perfect for you.

Knysna is a popular stop for cruising yachts sailing along the South African coast. The town is primarily built on the northern shore of a large warm-water estuary, fed by the Knysna River. The estuary opens to the ocean after passing between two large headlands. These are popularly known as the "The Heads". Near them are geological formations, known locally as "The Map Stones." To the north of Knysna, Afro-Montane or temperate rainforest covers the hilly terrain for 20 km until changing to fynbos or macchia high up in the Outeniqua Mountains.
The town is a popular destination for both tourists and senior citizens entering retirement, especially among the British and former expatriates due to the year-round warm climate. Recently the town has also become a preferred destination among golfers, as the town boasts several world class golf courses including Pezula Golf Course, Simola Golf Course and the well established Knysna Golf Course situated on the lagoon. Knysna too is a favourite haunt of artists, restaurateurs, and hippies. The nearest beach is located at Brenton-on-sea which lies directly west of the heads and is continuous with Buffels Bay, a popular surf spot.
Knysna's other claims to fame are at the end point of the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe steam railway, and as home to the fabled Knysna forest elephant.

The course to follow is indicated by leading lights - flashing red light, atop a mast on Leisure Island and a lower flashing white light atop the white rock beacon on the Starboard shoreline.
The course bearing to approach is 006°(T). It is important not to deviate from this line even when in very close proximity to rocks on the Port side.
When well into the entrance aim for a point roughly 30m to the West of the front leading white rock beacon. Turn to Port and follow the Porthand shoreline.
Floating mid-channel marker buoys (red and white stripes) are installed in the navigable main channel and it is best to follow these closely.
Maintain this course until abreast of the microwave tower on top of the hill on Portside, then turn to Starboard and keep to the leading marks on the hillside below the microwave tower (red light and white light on white poles).
Proceed northwards, past Thesen's Jetty, to the Knysna Yacht Club. Tie up at the club's floating jetties and report to the Manager.
Yachts are accommodated in the marinas.
Marinas & Yacht Clubs
Knysna Quays Marina
Knysna Quays Marina has 85 moorings, which were sold for private use, sold and put back into the pool for renting out or rented out on a monthly or daily basis. They have 15M, 12M and 8M moorings, all with fresh water and electricity points. A sewerage pump out facility is also available for the use of mooring holders. There are also have shower and toilet facilities for the exclusive use of the small craft harbour. Yachts are guided through The Heads on VHF radio Channel 16.
The marina is designed to handle boats of up to 60 feet with drafts of up to 3 metres comfortably. Berths are available in the following sizes: 10m, 12m, 15m, sorting top quality durable Balau walk-ons with concrete pontoons, both built to last.
Fresh water & electricity is available at your mooring, and there are shower and toilet facilities for the exclusive use of the marina users and (or) residents. There are fire & emergency warning facilities in place, and a sewerage pump-out facility is available to users. The water in the harbour has no oil slick or residue, an unsightly occurrence in large working harbours.
Situated alongside the popular Knysna Quays Waterfront shopping complex, the marina is also within walking distance of the Knysna town centre and its tourist attractions. Other services available include the use of the slipway and craft storage.
Knysna Yacht Club
The Yacht Club will allocate a swing mooring to visitors based on boat size, windage, and draft of the vessel. All bona fide local cruising yachts enjoy 3 days of free mooring (foreign cruisers - 7 days). Temporary use of the floating jetties in front of the Club is available in order to take on water, food, and passengers. Electricity and water are available at the Club Jetty. All visiting yachts are required to bring their own tenders.
The Yacht Club provides ablution facilities with hot showers; a bar, and a dining room for breakfasts and lunches Mondays to Saturdays. Dinners are served on Wednesdays and Fridays. The Wednesday happy hour (18:00 to 19:00) half priced drinks are ever popular and usually very festive. Barbeque facilities are available on the club deck.
The central shopping area of Knysna is within an easy walking distance of the club and marina and offers all the major supermarkets along with a great variety of locally owned stores, restaurants and more.
Visiting and local yachts can either utilize swing moorings in the lagoon or rent a berth in the marina. Guest swing moorings are available but skippers are advised to check on the availability by phone before departing for Knysna.

Welcome to:
The Leisure Isle Boat Club
The picturesque Peter Gordon small boat harbour is home to the Leisure Isle Boat Club (LIBC) and is located in uniquely beautiful surroundings on Leisure Isle, Knysna in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. LIBC was founded in about 1990 with the objective of providing facilities to enable Club Members to moor and store their small boats and trailers in a safe and secure environment, and for the use and general enjoyment by visitors and the public. The original harbour was built in 1992 and extended in 2004.
LIBC and its facilities are for recreational use only and no commercial ventures are allowed except under exceptional circumstances and with specific written approval. LIBC can only accommodate small boats, less than 6,1 meters in length, a beam of less than 2,4 meters and a draught not exceeding 0,6 meters. A limited number of boats up to 6,7 meters in length may be accommodated with special permission.
There are approximately 250 privately owned individual walk-on moorings in the harbour and a similar number of trailer parking bays on the hard, all of which are for use by LIBC Members and Temporary Members only.
There is also limited storage capacity for paddle craft (canoes and kayaks). Subject to availability, moorings are usually available to rent on a short or long-term basis, bearing in mind that there is always a high demand for rental berths during the December holiday period. Visitors are welcome and may launch their boats at the public slipway for a daily launch fee; alternatively visitors may join as Temporary Members on a weekly or monthly basis.
