Seychelles yacht charters

The Seychelles are made up of 115 islands, only 33 of which are  inhabited. Located south of the equator in the western Indian Ocean, the  Seychelles Islands are mostly coral, or volcanic in origin. Yacht  charter bases in the Seychelles are located on two major islands: Mahe  and Praslin. Mahe is the principal island of the archipelago, famous for  its large coconut palms and cinnamon plantations. It is also well known  for its fantastic views of the other islands.

Climate in Seychelles

Seychelles has two seasons: the cool southeast monsoon (May -  September), and the hot northwest monsoon (October-April). During the  cool season, breezes prevail, skies can be partly cloudy, temperatures  are lower, and the sea is less inviting for diving or snorkeling. The  hot northwest monsoon brings crystal waters, blue skies, along with heat  and occasional but serious rainstorms. The months of November and April  are optimal, with the best of both to offer. The busy high seasons fall  from July to August, and Christmas to New Year's.

Seychelles sailing conditions

Seychelles yacht rentals are mostly concentrated in the inner  islands of Praslin and La Digue, clustered around the main island and  offering short line of sight passages. The Seychelles have a tropical  climate with the dry season from April to October. This is the best time  for a sailing vacation in the Seychelles, with predictable winds around  the inner islands. Winds generally range from 6 – 20 knots (5 – 23 mph)  and temperatures range from 80 – 86 F (28 to 30 C). During the north or  south monsoon season, winds can be stronger, but it is almost never  dangerous as this region is located outside of the so-called cyclone and  storm zone. Yachting in the Seychelles, with its moderate climate and  fair winds, is perfect for experienced sailors or skippered charters.  With numerous magnificent coves, you can enjoy peaceful sailing in short  distances. Be aware of tidal waters that may range here up to 5 feet.

A sailing vacation in the Seychelles could be considered one of the  most desired charter destinations in the world. This is one of the few  places that can boast nature with unique flora and fauna, pristine pink  sand beaches, beautiful clear waters, giant tortoises, rare birds, and  two UNESCO World Heritage sites. All this makes a Seychelles yacht  charter an unforgettable life experience.

Known as the Galapagos of the Indian  Ocean, the islands were never inhabited before European colonization. As  a transit point for trade between Africa and Asia, the islands were  used be Arab navigators on their voyages and by pirates as well - only  until the French took their "Stone of Possession" and named the islands  after Jean Moreau de Seychelles in 1756. Britain and France fought over  the islands through the late 18th to early 19th centuries, with Britain  gaining its control in 1814. But in 1976 the Seychelles declared its  independence from Britain. And now renting a boat in Seychelles you will  see that people from different origins live together with inspiring  degree of harmony in diversity.

Places of interest

The main yacht charter base is located in Mahe -  archipelago's largest and most developed island. It is home to 90% of  the country's population with amazing ethnic diversity-from descendants  of European colonists and African slaves to later settlers from Arabia,  India and China. Mahe is the main transport hub for transfers to other  islands in the archipelago providing a good starting point for the yacht  charter.

Victoria, the capital and the commercial center of Seychelles and a  welcoming harbor with all types of dock, is only 5 miles south from the  International airport. Its National Botanical gardens are just on the  outskirts of town. While enjoying the most important local species,  including the rare Coco de Mer, watch out for the native Aldabra  tortoises (some over 150 years old) and the flying foxes roosting in the  palm trees. There is also the Spice garden to visit where vanilla  cinnamon, nutmeg and other endemic plants are grown.

Beau Vallon, among 65 stunning beaches to choose, is Mahe's most  popular yacht charter destinations. With surfing from September to  April, safe swimming year-round, it is the only beach where motorized  water sports are allowed. With a lifeguard on duty and no strong  currents, rocks or corals, it is safe for everyone.

The Seychelles are open for sailing all year long, with the most popular season December through March. The area has a tropical climate with steady temperatures in the mid-80s year-round and high humidity. Wind conditions vary.

Yacht Fuel is not included – the fuel tank will be full when your charter starts and you are responsible for topping off the fuel tank at the end of your charter. The price of the Comfort Pack varies by boat size and is a flat fee for bookings up to one week. A surcharge applies for bookings of 2+ weeks.

The republic of Seychelles comprises 115 islands, occupying a land area of 455km², in an exclusive economic zone of 1.4 million km² in the warm Western Indian Ocean. The best time to sail in the Seychelles is between April/May and October/November when water visibility is optimal – perfect for swimming, snorkelling and diving. It is hot and humid between November and March, and the wettest months are between December and February.Winds are generally very favorable for sailing all year round. When sailing between islands, care should be taken when navigating between small islands and reefs, as shallow waters and coral reefs can pose hazards to boats. Before leaving, ask the base for help!

Seychelles has a tropical climate with strong maritime influences. The trade winds influence the weather by bringing drier climate and steady winds. It has a stable year-round tropical climate with temperatures rarely dropping below 24°C or rising above 32°C. It is followed by a dry and slightly cooler season from June to September when southeast trade winds prevail. Sometimes, however, it can rain also in the dry season.

North Monsoon (December – April) : This period is the dry season in the Seychelles and the wind usually blows from the northeast. Constant and moderate winds create ideal sailing conditions. The sea is calm and visibility is good. Southeast Monsoon (May – September) : This period is the rainy season in the Seychelles and the wind usually blows from the southeast. Although this period can bring rain, the wind can also create suitable sailing conditions. The wind can also be strong in this case, but it can often change direction. Trades (October – November) : These periods are transitional periods between seasonality. The wind shifts from southwest to northwest and is generally less strong than during the north monsoon or southeast monsoon.

Renting A Yacht In the Seychelles

Whether on a crewed luxury yacht charter or on a bareboat sailing vacation it is easy to take a Seychelles yacht charter with Borrow a Boat. If on a crewed yacht charter you will fly into Victoria airport on Mahe island and head to Eden Island Marina where you will set sail.

With a bareboat charter you may be using Praslin Marina as a base or Eden Island Marina. On turning up at the marina you will present your sailing qualifications (an RYA Day Skipper is fine) and be introduced to your charter yacht. On completion of the formalities then off you go!

Charter companies don't allow bareboat charters out to the Outer Islands but there is plenty to explore on the Inner Island group and few restrictions other than those in place to protect the wildlife and ecology.

Getting to the Seychelles

Flights from Europe and the US to the Seychelles will involve a change of planes in Africa or the Middle East (Doha and Dubai are common).

If your yacht charter base is Mahe Island then it is a short bus ride. For those sailing from Praslin, you can either take a puddle jumper connecting flight to the island or a ferry.

Bareboat charter in the Seychelles

For those who seek a bit of adventure off their own back without the expense of a paid captain aboard, a bareboatcharter could be just the ticket. Sailing is line of sight and you won't need much beyond an RYA Day Skipper or equivalent for a bareboat charter in the Inner Islands.

Do you need a licence to charter in the Seychelles?

If you want to bareboat charter you will need an approved boating qualification. Below is a list of relevant qualifications:

ASA 104 Bareboat certificate: The American Sailing Association captain minimum qualification for renting bareboatyachts in the Seychelles. BoatUS and US Sailing also offer bareboat charter qualifications, as does CANsail.

RYA: The Royal Yachting Association's qualifications (minimum Day Captain level) is necessary for bareboat charter rent, it's also worthwhile seeing do you need to have done a VHF radio course as well as some boatowners will require this.

There are also many other European national boating qualifications that are accepted here too, it's worthwhile checking these details before renting.

If you want a captained boat rental as a charter yacht then you don't need any sailing certification at all, you just turn up and off you go.

Best Times To Rent

Unlike Europe, the sailing season in the Seychelles archipelago runs from November to April - perfect for a dose of winter sun. The summer monsoon is settled and you will encounter weather between 25-35 degrees C.

Within this period, between December and February you will find the winds are from the NE and rarely get over 14 knots.

If you can get to the Seychelles outside of school vacations you will find the sailing weather at its best and the resorts less crowded.

North East Monsoon: Thanks to being on the Equator the winds in the Seychelles never get too strong in the sailing season.

There's almost a yacht for every budget when it comes to chartering. For US $120 a day - $840 a week - you can take a sailboat monohull out with five other adults. That is going to be cheaper than a week in a hotel for everyone.

Catamarans cost a lot more - expect to pay anything from $500 to $2,000 a day depending on the season.

Motor boats taken on a bareboat basis can cost as little as $500 a day if they have sleeping acommodation - much less if they are day boats.

RIBs can cost as little as $50 for an afternoon.

In each of the examples above you can take on a captain starting at $150 a day depending on what the vessel is and their required qualifications to sail it.
